00:14 Doug Batchelor: Until the sin problem is dealt with there is
00:16 gonna be war, you just really gotta choose whose side you want
00:19 to be on.
00:20 You cannot be on both sides, Jesus said, "You're either with
00:24 Me or against Me."
00:25 If you are with Him, you're gonna be the target of
00:28 the enemy.
00:33 Doug Batchelor: In the beatitudes we've been looking
00:35 for, I just wanted to reemphasize this was not a
00:39 smattering of ideas and teachings but it is a progress.
00:46 First step, of course, is you come to the place where you're
00:49 poor in spirit, you realize that you're spiritually bankrupt,
00:54 that we can't do anything without God.
00:56 The second one is mourning over that.
01:00 The third one is, then, meekly submitting to God's will.
01:04 The fourth one is hungering for righteousness that you
01:07 don't have.
01:08 That will produce in you an attitude of mercy towards others
01:12 and a pursuit of purity and becoming peacemaking, which is
01:16 where we are today, talking about peacemakers and there's
01:20 really seven beatitudes and this is the seventh one.
01:24 The eighth beatitude, because the name of the series is "Eight
01:27 Keys to Joy and Peace," the eighth one is really the result
01:31 of living the seven.
01:33 So if you are being holy you're gonna then be a threat to the
01:37 devil and you're going to encounter resistance.
01:41 So today, we're getting involved in considering the
01:44 seventh beatitude.
01:46 Matthew 5, verse 9, "Blessed are the peacemakers, For they will
01:51 be called the sons of God."
01:54 So maybe I should have start at telling you what a peacemaker is
01:57 not because I run into so many misunderstandings about, what
02:00 does it mean to be a peacemaker and to receive that reward, that
02:04 promise that you will be called, "The sons," or, "The children
02:07 of God"?
02:08 If you work for the Peace Corps, that does not automatically make
02:12 you a peacemaker.
02:14 You may work at the United Nations for International Peace
02:17 and that would be commendable, but you can do that and be an
02:20 atheist, that doesn't make you a biblical peacemaker.
02:26 You may be the winner of the Nobel Peace Prize and that's
02:33 good but that doesn't make you a peacemaker.
02:36 Atheists win the Peace Prize sometimes, they are not going to
02:40 be the sons of God.
02:42 And a lot of people think that a peacemaker is somebody who's
02:47 always trying to concede and reconcile, and they're willing
02:52 to give in because they just don't like conflict and so they
02:58 keep the peace by just giving in all the time.
03:01 Well, that's good and it's commendable to not want
03:05 unnecessary conflict but that's not the ultimate definition of
03:08 what a peacekeeper is.
03:10 Probably ought to stop at this point and say, why do we
03:13 need peacemakers?
03:16 Well yeah, why are people saying, "We need peace"?
03:19 Only time they're going to say, "We really need peace," is
03:21 because there's a war.
03:23 Now, I'd like to suggest there's four different kinds of war that
03:26 are going on right now.
03:28 First of all, we need peacemakers because we got war
03:31 between nations.
03:33 That is not the one that Jesus is principally concerned with.
03:36 Jesus said you might be a peacemaker but don't think
03:38 you're gonna settle the world's wars.
03:41 He said, "You will hear of wars," Matthew 24:6, "And rumors
03:45 of wars.
03:46 See that you're not troubled; all these things must come to
03:50 pass, the end is not yet.
03:52 For nation will rise against nation," He doesn't even
03:54 identify them, He says this is going to happen everywhere,
03:57 "Kingdom against kingdom."
03:59 That's just going to be the way of the world.
04:00 Now, why?
04:02 because there's just sin in the world, there's selfishness in
04:05 the world, and the same kind of selfishness and sin that causes
04:11 wars in families causes wars in nations.
04:14 It's usually greed or pride, people wanting to have control
04:20 and power.
04:23 So there's war between nations, and of course, we do need
04:26 peacemakers but don't hold your breath for world peace.
04:31 How many counsels and committees and summits have there been for
04:36 World Peace?
04:37 And how well has that turned out?
04:41 So we need peace because there are wars between people.
04:46 Now, I'm going to spend a moment on this point.
04:49 James chapter 4, verse 1, "Where do wars and fightings come from
04:54 among you?
04:55 Do they not come from the desires for pleasure that war in
04:58 your members?"
04:59 We've got something inside, it's sin, it's selfishness and it
05:02 causes disputes.
05:05 James 3:17, "The fruit of righteousness is sown in peace
05:09 of them that make peace."
05:11 So one of the characteristics of Christians is we know how to
05:14 create reconciliation and peace, and that's something about what
05:20 Jesus came to do.
05:21 Did Jesus have to deal with that with the apostles?
05:24 Said, "What exactly was it you were arguing about on your way
05:28 to the upper room?"
05:30 Well, they didn't want to say, they all kinda looked at their
05:32 feet and their fingernails and [murmurs].
05:35 He said, "Ah, you were arguing which of you is the greatest.
05:38 That war came from your pride, which of you is the greatest."
05:42 And then Jesus washed their feet and they were ashamed they
05:45 were arguing.
05:47 Another time they were arguing about which was the greatest and
05:49 He put a child in the middle of them and said, "Whoever would be
05:51 greatest among you must be the servant of all.
05:53 You must be like a child."
05:55 So Jesus was a peacemaker, He tried to bring peace even within
05:59 the disciples, there were disputes that were happening.
06:03 And so this is very important, to have this spirit
06:07 of reconciliation.
06:09 John 13:35, Jesus said, "By this all men will know that you're My
06:13 disciples, if you love one another."
06:18 So part of being a peacemaker is developing peace and helping
06:25 brethren reconcile.
06:28 One of the ways to maintain peace is to know when to
06:34 keep silent.
06:38 If someone says something unkind about someone you know, don't be
06:41 the first one to go tell them that, just keep it to yourself.
06:45 The Bible says, "A good friend withholds a matter," and
06:48 sometimes we start wars and there's all kinds of agitation
06:51 because people repeat bad things.
06:53 Now, what you wanna do as often as possible is repeat the good
06:56 things that someone says about someone else.
06:59 I knew pastor that he was a great reconciler and there were
07:03 a couple of brethren in the church, they went to the same
07:07 church, they would not sit on the same side of the church,
07:09 they would not talk to each other.
07:12 And the pastor would go visit Brother Brown, and he asked
07:16 Brother Brown, he said, "So, what do you think of
07:18 Brother Smith?"
07:19 "Well, that Brother Smith, he's just a no good, low down," and
07:22 he had all these terrible things to say about him.
07:24 He said, "Well, but you need to admit he's got a very
07:28 nice family."
07:30 Said, "Well yeah, I would admit that."
07:33 So then he goes and he sees Brother Smith, he said, "So,
07:35 what do you think of Brother Brown?"
07:37 "Oh, he's a no good, low down," he says, "Well, you know, he
07:40 says you've got a really nice family."
07:41 "Did he say that?"
07:43 Said, "Yeah," he says, "Can you think of anything nice to say
07:45 about him?"
07:46 Said, "He's an honest businessman."
07:48 He goes back and he tells Brother Brown, he said, "Yeah,
07:50 he says you're an honest businessman."
07:52 "He said that?
07:53 He said that?"
07:55 "Yeah."
07:56 Next thing you know, they're shaking hands in church.
07:57 So if you're going to repeat gossip, just repeat the good
08:00 stuff and compliment.
08:04 We sometimes drive wedges between people by speaking
08:09 the wrong kinds of words.
08:11 Now, the reason we need peacemakers, there's war between
08:13 nations, there's war between people, there's war in our
08:17 heads, in our hearts, and then we're at war with God.
08:20 Let me talk about the war within for just a moment, Bible has
08:23 a lot to say about this.
08:24 Romans 7:23, Paul said, "I see another law in my members,
08:31 warring," some people have no peace because of a war inside,
08:35 "Warring against the law of my mind, and bringing me into
08:39 captivity to the law of sin that is in my members."
08:41 Why do we need peacemakers?
08:43 Because there's war.
08:45 Why is there war? 'Cause there's sin.
08:47 If there's no sin in the world, there'd be no war and we'd
08:49 have peace.
08:51 Until the sin problem is dealt with, there is gonna be war in
08:55 the world.
08:57 Now, that doesn't mean you can't have peace, because you can have
09:00 the sin problem dealt with.
09:02 Again, 1 Peter 2:11, "Beloved, I beg you as sojourners and
09:06 pilgrims, abstain from fleshly lusts that war against
09:11 the soul."
09:12 There's a war going on inside, I don't know if you're ever trying
09:15 to be a Christian you've felt the battle and there's a
09:19 struggle and it takes away our peace, because the things that
09:23 we know we should do we sometimes don't want to do.
09:26 And this is battle, the Bible calls it, "Between the flesh and
09:30 the spirit."
09:31 And if you live according to the flesh you will die, and if you
09:34 want to live you've got to live according to the spirit, and
09:38 there's this tug of war that we have between love and
09:42 selfishness, all of us have it inside.
09:45 If I was the sum up the word sin, it would be selfishness.
09:50 And if I was to coalesce the word of salvation, love is
09:56 the essence of who God is.
09:58 And you've got the devil is the epitome of pride and
10:00 selfishness, and God is love, and we've got these two supreme
10:05 polar opposite motives that are battling in our hearts and until
10:08 we surrender to one, there's gonna be war.
10:11 Now, when you finally do surrender, the Bible says,
10:14 "Jesus reigns in your heart as Lord," there's peace in the
10:17 kingdom of your heart because you've surrendered your heart to
10:20 Him, and He gives you peace.
10:23 Now, how many of you want to be peacemakers?
10:26 Well, that's it, do you want that blessing?
10:28 it's the key to happiness and joy.
10:30 You can be a mediator, not only by refereeing disputes for
10:36 Christ and reconciling people, but by mediating through your
10:42 prayers you are being a peacemaker.
10:46 The world is separated from God, He wants those who will be
10:49 prayer warriors that will pray for intercession, that will pray
10:52 for reconciliation between us and God.
10:55 This is what Moses did, this is what Christ did.
10:58 Why did Jesus come?
10:59 He came as the great peacekeeper, peacemaker, I get
11:03 them mixed up, He came to reconcile us to God, we've been
11:06 separated by sin.
11:08 So this is I think one of the most important things that Jesus
11:11 was talking about when He said, "Blessed are the peacemakers."
11:14 You start out poor in spirit and then, as you mature through the
11:18 Christian experience, you come to the place where your big
11:21 mission in life is bringing other people to God.
11:24 People have been separated from God, there's a war between them
11:27 and God, and you're a great peacekeeper.
11:30 And this is the work of the believer.
11:32 You've got friends and everybody, they don't know
11:34 the Lord.
11:35 If we go out and we tell them about how they can live forever,
11:38 how they can have better lives now and eternal life, what could
11:41 be more important than that?
11:43 You become a peacemaker, and what does He declare of you?
11:47 You are the children of God, that means even the world will
11:51 identify you as His sons.
11:53 And those are the ones when God says, "Pray, 'Our Father,'"
11:57 Jesus said, "Pray, 'Our Father,'" it's because we are
11:59 His children because we've made peace with Him.

12:33 important, to share it with others.
12:37 Doug Batchelor: Now, those are the seven beatitudes, but
12:40 there's really eight beatitudes because it adds one more.
12:43 This beatitude is the result, it will be the result of living
12:47 this Christian life in a hostile world.
12:51 "Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness'
12:54 sake, For theirs is the kingdom of heaven."
12:58 And then He goes on, He expands on this, "Blessed are you when
13:02 they revile you and persecute you, and say all kinds of evil
13:06 against you falsely for My sake.
13:09 Rejoice and be exceedingly glad, for great is your reward in
13:12 heaven, for so they persecuted the prophets who were
13:16 before you."
13:18 So this beatitude is explaining the result: peacemakers will
13:22 be persecuted.
13:25 Are you hoping that you could have the ideal situation?
13:30 "Lord, I want to be a Christian and I want to have Christian
13:35 family and I want to live in a Christian country and I want the
13:41 people where I work to be Christians so I won't encounter
13:44 any resistance."
13:46 How many of you think that's likely?
13:49 That's not gonna happen.
13:52 The Bible tells us, "All who will live godly in Christ Jesus
13:55 will suffer persecution."
13:57 How many?
13:59 Again, it says in Psalm 34:19, "Many are the afflictions of the
14:03 righteous, but the Lord delivers them out of all of them."
14:07 Are there few or many afflictions of the righteous?
14:10 Now, it is better to be a Christian.
14:12 I mean, just sum it up this way, life is tough, it's a lot
14:15 tougher to be lost than to be saved, but if you're thinking
14:18 that being a Christian means you're not gonna have problems
14:21 you just have problems with a different power.
14:23 Before you are Christian, you are the enemy of God.
14:27 And by the way, He wins in the end, did you know that?
14:30 The devil, he'll support you, but you are the enemy of God.
14:34 Once you become a Christian, now you the enemy of the devil, so
14:37 you just really got to choose who you want, whose side you
14:39 want to be on.
14:40 You cannot be on both sides.
14:44 I've seen pastors that thought that they would bring healing
14:47 into their church by trying to accommodate two bad views and
14:52 they ended up angering everybody.
14:55 You got to know what you stand for and preach what you
14:57 stand for.
14:58 And if you're trying to, you know, make everybody happy,
15:02 that's not what it means to be a peacemaker, you need to stand
15:04 for principles of truth.
15:06 If you do that, you're going to be persecuted.
15:09 And Jesus said don't be shocked, you're going to get resistance.
15:14 John 15:18, "If the world hates you, know that it hated Me
15:18 before it hated you.
15:20 If you were of the world, the world would love its own.
15:23 Yet because you are not of the world, I chose you out of the
15:26 world, therefore the world hates you."
15:28 So if you're getting along with everybody in the world do you
15:32 think that's a good sign for a Christian?
15:35 You're probably not living in such a way that your religion is
15:38 a threat to the devil.
15:40 I remember hearing one time, you know, Wesley and Whitfield, when
15:43 they went around preaching they got a lot of opposition because
15:46 the church said you had to be an authorized preacher and had to
15:48 be in a church.
15:49 Well, they ignored this law and they were going through the
15:51 countryside preaching and they got, you can read it in the book
15:55 "Great Controversy," they got harassed, they got beat by mobs
15:58 and they'd escape with their lives by the skin of their teeth
16:01 several times.
16:02 And Wesley was riding along one day on his horse by himself and
16:09 he thought, "Boy, I haven't had any harassment or trouble or
16:14 persecution in two weeks."
16:17 And then a horrifying thought came and he thought, "Maybe I'm
16:20 no longer a threat to the devil, maybe I'm not
16:23 living righteously."
16:24 And he dropped off his horse right there and he knelt by the
16:26 side of the road and he said, "Lord, am I being faithful?"
16:30 And a neighbor that was living in the house saw him, recognized
16:35 him, and hurled a brick at him and said, "You Methodist, there
16:39 goes John Wesley, that Methodist preacher."
16:41 He missed him and Wesley got on his horse, runaway praising the
16:45 Lord for the evidence of God's blessing.
16:52 So if you're living godly, you will suffer persecution.
16:57 Now, where does it come from?
16:59 It will come from, it might be government, you know, at some
17:02 point they will persecute you.
17:04 Right now, there are places in the world where if you convert a
17:09 person from Christianity they can be killed.
17:12 Karen and I traveled to a country I'll not name right now
17:15 that you couldn't freely give out literature and if you did
17:20 give out any literature you had to put a stamp on it that said,
17:23 "This literature is not approved Muslim literature."
17:27 I mean, we have such religious freedom here in America, we
17:30 think it's everywhere, it's not.
17:32 So if you think, "Well, we're living in a world with no
17:35 persecution," that's not true, there's a lot of places in the
17:39 world where there's persecution.
17:41 And prophecy says someday there's going to be global
17:44 persecution, yes, even here in our country.
17:49 Jesus said in Matthew 10:34, "Do not think that I have come to
17:53 bring peace on earth."
17:55 You know, didn't the angel say, "Peace on earth and goodwill
17:57 towards men"?
17:59 Yes.
18:00 Jesus came to bring peace in that respect but it's not global
18:03 political peace.
18:05 "I didn't come to bring peace but a sword.
18:08 For I have come to 'set a man against his father, a daughter
18:12 against her mother, and a daughter-in-law against her
18:15 mother-in-law'; and a man's enemies will be those of his
18:18 own household."
18:20 That's not only seen in families when you've got some Pagans that
18:24 won't accept Christ, the other members of the family will
18:26 persecute that person.
18:28 I know people that they come from a Hindu family or they come
18:32 from a Muslim family and they accepted Christ, their whole
18:35 family now shuns them.
18:37 They just say it's like they said, "You're dead," they're
18:40 gonna completely cut them off.
18:42 And so, yeah, there's persecution even from within.
18:45 Now, when it says it might even be in your own house, it can
18:48 even be in your own church.
18:51 Who was it that turned Jesus over?
18:55 Who was it that tried to kill David?
18:56 His son, his own king.
18:59 Who was it that sold Joseph?
19:01 His brothers.
19:03 Now, sometimes there will be persecution that may spring from
19:07 even within.
19:10 Are you to rejoice at times like that?
19:12 It's hard but you're sharing in the sufferings of Jesus.
19:19 One of the reasons we might rejoice in persecution, one
19:23 reason is because God has made a promise; the Lord promised that
19:28 all things can be worked together by the Lord for good.
19:32 You don't always know it right away.
19:35 How many of you remember the story in the Bible where Samson
19:38 wrestled with a lion?
19:39 He had a fight with a lion, he killed the Lion.
19:42 Well it's no fun to fight lions.
19:45 A few weeks later, he came back to the lion and there were bees
19:49 that had made honey in the lion.
19:50 He got honey out of the lion.
19:53 He probably never knew that day he was fighting that lion that
19:55 he would end up getting honey out of it later.
19:58 Sometimes when you're going through trials and persecution
20:01 and battles, you don't know why but you'll get honey out of it
20:05 later, God can somehow turn it into a blessing later.
20:10 So one of the ways we share our faith is say, "Oh, I'm gonna
20:13 rejoice in this persecution.
20:14 I don't know why I'm rejoicing now, but I trust that You will
20:16 work all things together for good.
20:18 And somehow, I may not understand or see it now, You're
20:22 going to bring something good out of this someday."
20:25 I always thought it was the most amazing example of faith when
20:31 you read about Daniel.
20:33 He's about to go to the lion's den, he goes to his upper room
20:36 and he gets on his knees to pray and the Bible says that, "He
20:40 gave thanks."
20:41 Last thing in the world on my mind if I was about to be cat
20:45 food is to thank the Lord, I probably couldn't think of
20:48 anything to be thankful for.
20:50 But the Bible says, "In all things, give thanks."
20:53 And Daniel, thanking the Lord for this coming trial since it
20:58 was a habit, he prayed, he gave God thanks, he knew that God was
21:02 going to somehow work it out to His glory.
21:04 And did He ever work it out for His glory?
21:05 We're talking about it still today.
21:07 Look at what a witness Daniel was because he was faithful
21:10 through his persecutions.
21:12 The whole world got the decree from the king because of that.
21:17 Now, finally, in conclusion, you know this is our third and final
21:20 message on the beatitudes, I think the most important thing I
21:24 can say is those eight beatitudes exemplify the life
21:29 of Jesus.
21:31 When we're called to model those beatitudes, we're really being
21:35 called to follow Christ.
21:38 Just look at it for a moment, "Blessed are the poor
21:41 in spirit."
21:42 Was Jesus poor?
21:44 2 Corinthians 8:9, "For you know the grace of our Lord Jesus
21:48 Christ, that though He was rich, yet for your sakes He became
21:52 poor, that through His poverty you might become rich."
21:56 Jesus became poor in spirit.
22:00 "Blessed are those who mourn."
22:02 Isaiah 53, says, "He is despised and rejected of men, A Man of
22:06 sorrows and acquainted with grief."
22:09 And you can read where Jesus at the tomb of Lazarus, there He
22:13 wept, He wept over Jerusalem, Jesus mourned but He'll rejoice
22:18 someday when He sees the New Jerusalem.
22:21 Meek, "Blessed are the meek."
22:24 Was Jesus meek?
22:25 Isaiah 53, "He was oppressed and He was afflicted, Yet He opened
22:30 not His mouth; He was led as a lamb to the slaughter, And as a
22:34 sheep before its shearers is silent, He opened not
22:36 His mouth."
22:38 Was He meek?
22:39 The Bible tells us, "Take My yoke upon you and learn of Me,"
22:41 Matthew 11, "I am gentle and lowly," I am meek and lowly,
22:46 "And you will find rest for your souls."
22:48 "Blessed are the meek."
22:49 "Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness."
22:53 Was Jesus hungry?
22:54 He fasted in the wilderness for 40 days, He was hungrier than
22:57 you've probably ever been.
23:00 And, "Blessed are the merciful."
23:01 Was Jesus merciful?
23:03 The Lord is very compassionate and merciful.
23:06 John 8:11, "Neither do I condemn you; go and sin no more."
23:12 And then said, "Blessed are the pure," Christ is the essence of
23:16 purity, He was without sin.
23:18 Psalm 119, verse 140, "Your word is very pure," and Jesus is the
23:23 Word made flesh.
23:24 Even Pilate said, "I find no fault in Him."
23:28 Was Christ a peacemaker?
23:30 He's called the Prince of Peace, He is the King of Peace, and you
23:34 know what?
23:35 He's taking us to the New Jerusalem.
23:37 And what does the word Jeru Shalom mean?
23:40 City of Peace.
23:42 He came to help us make peace with God.
23:44 Colossians 1:20, "And by Him to reconcile all things to Himself,
23:49 by Him, whether things on earth or in heaven, having made peace
23:54 through the blood of His cross."
23:56 Jesus is the Great Peacemaker.
23:58 Was Christ persecuted?
24:00 Well, that's sort of a rhetorical question, isn't it?
24:03 He was persecuted for righteousness' sake.
24:05 They didn't want to destroy Jesus because of His badness but
24:08 because of His goodness, His goodness made their badness
24:12 stand out.
24:13 Christ's was persecuted.
24:15 And in spite of that, when He was persecuted, Jesus thanked
24:18 the Father through it all.
24:21 So what do you get when you follow the beatitudes.
24:23 It says, "Theirs is the kingdom of heaven...
24:26 They shall be comforted...
24:28 They will inherit the earth...
24:30 They will be filled...
24:32 They will obtain mercy...
24:33 They will see God...
24:35 They will be called the sons of God."
24:38 What beautiful promises all summed up in this simple sermon
24:44 of the beatitudes, a simple message that Jesus gave in just
24:48 12 verses.
24:50 You know, I'm looking forward to being in that kingdom.
24:55 I think there are days of persecution ahead but, you know,
24:59 it's hard to come to the place where you can rejoice in
25:01 persecution until you take the previous steps of recognizing
25:05 our poverty of spirit, mourning over our failures, then
25:10 accepting His forgiveness.
25:12 And then, as you go from there you become meek in heart and you
25:16 hunger and thirst for righteousness, you want that
25:19 purity of heart, you want to be a soul-winner.
25:24 And don't worry, the persecution will come, and those days you'll
25:27 be able to even rejoice through persecution.
25:29 But it begins with first coming to Jesus and accepting Him as
25:34 our Lord and our Savior.
