00:31 Doug: "Seven Steps to Stronger Faith," we're going to get
00:35 right to it.
00:38 This is one of the most important things I think that we
00:40 could talk about because faith is essential in being saved.
00:49 Now, when I went to school, I love history, I didn't do so
00:54 well in spelling or English or math or just about every other
01:03 subject, but I did okay in history because I just was
01:09 fascinated with the story of history, of the stories.
01:13 And one of the stories that always fascinated me was the
01:16 story of Hannibal of Carthaginian.
01:20 I actually went to Carthage when I was 16 years old, and on
01:23 a sailboat.
01:24 And Hannibal took an army, well, let me give you the backstory
01:30 first, what made it incredible.
01:31 The Carthaginians, North Africa, were at war with the the rising
01:35 Roman power there in Italy, and Hannibal, who was a very wise
01:41 general, he knew that he could not just cross the Mediterranean
01:45 and attack the boot of Italy like everyone had done.
01:48 All their forces were amassed there.
01:50 And one of the most important elements in a battle is the
01:53 element of surprise, and he thought, "You know, they're not
01:56 going to be guarding their northern border because the
01:58 Italian Alps are up there and they're just never going to be
02:00 expecting an attack from there.
02:02 So I'm going to land my army in Spain, and we will march up
02:06 through the Pyrenees Mountains, we will march through the Alps,
02:12 and we will cross those mountains and attack from
02:17 the north."
02:19 That was a pretty outrageous plan because his army consisted
02:23 of 38,000 infantry, 8,000 calvary and 38 elephants,
02:31 African war elephants.
02:34 Now, I just think it's pretty hard to cross the Alps, but to
02:41 do it with elephants.
02:43 And I always just pictured these quiet little Alpine Italian
02:49 villages, where they're out there, you know, they're taking
02:51 care of their farms and the little herbs and their tulips or
02:54 whatever they did.
02:55 And all of a sudden they heard the trumpet of an elephant and
02:59 they saw an army of elephants come marching through the
03:01 Alpines, that must have been something.
03:05 But he managed to do it, he was able to overcome the mountains,
03:09 which made me think about that statement of Jesus.
03:12 In Matthew 17, verse 20, "Assuredly, I say to you, if you
03:18 have faith as a mustard seed, you'll say to this mountain,
03:22 'Move from here to there,' and it will move; and nothing will
03:25 be impossible for you," if you have faith.
03:31 Do you have faith?
03:32 You have enough faith?
03:34 Faith is the central, most crucial element in
03:38 our salvation.
03:41 The Bible tells us, "Without faith," in Hebrews 11:6,
03:44 "Without faith it is impossible to please Him, for he who comes
03:49 to God must believe that He is, and He is a rewarder of those
03:53 who diligently seek Him."
03:54 Faith can be achieved by diligently seeking after Him,
03:58 but you must come in faith.
04:01 You think about it, and there were two people straddling Jesus
04:05 on the cross, two thieves, one on the right, one on the left.
04:08 The Bible is very clear that one called out for salvation and he
04:16 was saved, the other called out and he is not saved.
04:21 The difference between the two thieves is one thief began his
04:24 prayer with "If"; he didn't have faith.
04:29 He said, "If you are the Son of God, save Yourself and us."
04:32 Jesus had no promise of salvation for him.
04:35 The other one said, "Lord, save me when You come into Your
04:38 kingdom," it was a prayer of faith.
04:40 He will be saved.
04:41 Two kinds of people, saved and lost; two kinds of prayers,
04:45 prayer of faith and one that lacks faith.
04:48 And Jesus asked the question, "When the Son of Man comes," you
04:51 know what He says?
04:53 "Will He find faith in the world?"
04:57 "For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son,
05:00 that whosoever has faith in Him," that's what believeth
05:04 means, "Whoever has faith in Him will not perish but have
05:08 everlasting life."
05:11 You may also want to remember Matthew 13:58.
05:15 When Jesus went to His hometown, the Bible says He did very
05:19 few miracles.
05:20 You know why?
05:22 'Cause they didn't have faith.
05:23 "Because of their unbelief, He did not do many mighty
05:26 works there."
05:27 Very simple: more faith, more mighty works; little faith,
05:33 little mighty works.
05:35 If you want to see more of the power of God in your life, we
05:38 need more faith.
05:39 So, that just introduces the seven steps, and this won't be
05:44 long, it's not going to be hard.
05:46 Well, I say that, sometimes I don't keep my promise, but
05:49 shouldn't be long.
05:51 Step number one, the Word.
05:54 Everything else we're going to read about, the other steps, is
05:56 based on the Word so I thought I'd start with the Word.
05:59 But if you want more faith, you need to spend time in the Word.
06:01 Here's the promise, Romans 10:17, "So then faith comes by
06:07 hearing, and hearing by the word of God."
06:12 Maybe you heard about this blind man named Bartimaeus, and he
06:15 heard that Jesus was coming by and so he called out, "Son of
06:19 David, have mercy on me."
06:22 And the crowd told him, "Be quiet," but he would not be
06:26 quiet, he called even more, "Son of David, have mercy on me."
06:29 Now, it's interesting that Jesus had just come away from the
06:31 religious leaders that didn't really believe Jesus was the
06:34 Messiah, but this blind man, even though he can't see, he
06:38 believes the Word that he hears and he says, "That's the Son
06:42 of David."
06:43 And so he is brought to Jesus not based on what he sees, he's
06:47 brought to Jesus based on what he hears, and Christ is able to
06:50 open his eyes.
06:52 You know how sin entered the world?
06:55 What's the first question in the Bible?
07:00 "Hath God said?"
07:03 The first question is the devil questioning the Word of God,
07:08 doubting the Word; he was trying to plant that doubt in the minds
07:12 of our first parents.
07:14 And so sin entered the world through a lack of faith in
07:19 God's Word.
07:20 The more faith we have in God's Word, God's Word will keep you
07:24 from sin or sin will keep you from God's Word, that's kind of
07:27 how it works.
07:28 You read it, you'll be convicted, you'll either change
07:30 your behavior or you'll stop reading it, kind of like the man
07:34 who really enjoyed rice and then one day he got a microscope and
07:39 he looked at his rice under a microscope and we saw that that
07:43 rice was crawling with all kinds of very small bacteria.
07:47 And so though he didn't know what to do so he broke the
07:49 microscope because he liked his rice.
07:54 People who are convicted by the Word either need to give up
07:58 their sin or they start giving up the Word.
08:00 By the way, it's also true with church, church will keep you
08:03 from sin or sin will keep you from church.
08:08 So we need to read the Word.
08:09 Jesus said in Matthew 4:4, "Man shall not live by bread alone,
08:13 but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God."
08:17 So, you want to grow your faith?
08:19 Spend time in the Word, spend time in the Word every day, have
08:23 scheduled time.
08:25 You're driving in your car, you can put it in a CD or on your
08:29 iPod or whatever.
08:30 They got so many different ways you can listen in your car to
08:34 the Bible right now, you can do it through your phone, you can
08:37 do it through a little SD card, you can do it through a USB, you
08:40 can do it through the radio or a CD if your car still has one.
08:44 Any one still have a cassette player in their car?
08:46 I see a few, yeah, I got some cassettes I'd like to share with
08:50 you, sister.
08:53 So listen to the Word, then pray, number two is pray, in
08:56 building your faith.
08:58 James 5:15, "And the prayer of faith will save the sick, and
09:04 the Lord will raise him up.
09:05 If he has committed sins, he will be forgiven."
09:07 Through prayers of faith, things happen.
09:10 You pray big prayers, what will happen to your faith?
09:14 Gets bigger.
09:16 How many of you, you've prayed a prayer and then you see an
09:19 answer to your prayer, and what happens?
09:21 Your faith gets stronger.
09:23 Just this week, I lost a key to the car.
09:26 Now, you know the keys to the new cars are more expensive.
09:29 The old days you just go get a copy made, cost you $2; now it's
09:33 like $145 to replace one of these keys, and so I was
09:37 really praying.
09:38 It wasn't a little key prayer, it was a big key prayer.
09:43 And I knew I'd brought it home from the health club and I
09:47 looked all over and I went through the laundry and I was
09:51 digging around.
09:52 You ever looking for something, you check your pockets three
09:55 times, you think, "Maybe I missed it the other two times,"
09:58 and you just keep going back?
09:59 And I was digging around, I was digging around, then I realized
10:01 it was garbage day.
10:03 I thought, "Maybe it fell out of my pants."
10:06 I don't know how it happened but I said, "You know, wouldn't it
10:08 be awful if it was in the garbage?"
10:10 And the garbage is out in front of the house and we'd already
10:12 thrown all the garbage in there.
10:15 And so I thought--I went out and started digging through the
10:18 garbage thinking, "Did it fall in there?"
10:19 I didn't go to the bottom, I thought, "It's just not worth
10:21 it, I'll pay $145 before I do that."
10:26 So finally, I thought, "Well, I'm searching, I'm frantic.
10:29 Pray."
10:30 So it wasn't long after I prayed, I found my key.
10:33 It was in the car, it had fallen down, it had fallen down between
10:40 the seat and the shifter thing.
10:43 So when you pray--and then what happened to my faith?
10:45 After you pray and you find it, "Prayer works, look at that, I
10:48 ought to do it more often."
10:50 So pray more, pray big prayers, don't just pray for yourself,
10:54 pray for others, and you'll see.
10:57 Keep a log.
10:59 Do you ever write down when God answers your prayer?
11:01 Make a little log of it, write it down, and then it'll refresh
11:06 your faith as you look back at how many times God has answered
11:09 your prayers over the course of your life.
11:11 I've got a prayer list in my computer.
11:14 When I do my worship in the morning, I have a little prayer
11:17 list and I write things down.
11:18 And over the years, I've checked off those answers, I delete them
11:22 and then I add new ones.
11:23 And I thought, Man, I shouldn't be deleting them, I ought to
11:25 save them, all the answered prayers that God has performed.
11:30 "Have faith in God.
11:33 For assuredly, I say to you, whoever says to this mountain,
11:37 'Be removed and cast into the sea,' and does not doubt in his
11:40 heart, but believes that those things that he says will be
11:43 done, he will have whatever he says.
11:46 Therefore I say to you, whatever things you ask when you pray,
11:50 believe that you'll receive them, and you will
11:52 receive them."
11:54 Well, that just--you read that and you think, "That can't
11:56 actually mean that."
11:57 It may not mean the part about praying the mountain moves
12:00 because most of us don't need to move mountains, it's mountains
12:03 of sin.
12:05 The Bible tells us that you can say to a mountain, "Be cast into
12:08 the depths of the sea," and it will be done, it's the mountain
12:10 of sin we--
12:11 and God says he casts our sins into the sea, that he
12:15 deals with.
12:17 "Therefore whatever you ask when you receive, believe that you
12:20 receive them, and you will have them."
12:23 Well, it's pretty clear that you pray in faith, and He says, "All
12:27 things are possible with God."
12:29 So don't ever put any doubts on what the Lord is able to do.

13:05 important, to share it with others.
13:09 Doug Batchelor: All right, read the Bible, pray, step out in
13:14 faith, act upon the faith that you have, don't wait until you
13:18 know that all obstacles are removed.
13:20 Real faith is taking that step of faith.
13:22 It's kind of like when Jesus came to the disciples and they
13:26 were out that night rowing against the wind on the waves of
13:29 Galilee, and Jesus was walking on the water and Peter said,
13:34 "Lord, if that's you, bid that I come to You on the water."
13:36 Jesus said, "Come."
13:40 At some point, Peter must've believed that he could come to
13:44 the Lord, and all it was was the word of Jesus that said, "Come
13:46 to Me."
13:48 Peter had to take that first step, he had to step out of the
13:51 security of the boat into the storm, and when he did that, the
13:58 water became firm under his feet and he was able to do
14:01 the impossible.
14:02 As long as he kept his eyes on Jesus, he was able to walk
14:05 on water.
14:07 But at some point along the way, Peter--I just think, I can't
14:10 prove this, but I think he was wondering, "Are my friends
14:13 getting this on their iPhone?
14:15 No one's ever going to believe this, I want to stream
14:17 this live."
14:19 And he looked around to say, "Hey guys, you getting this?"
14:21 But when he took his eyes off Jesus, then he saw the waves and
14:26 his faith began to sink.
14:27 And what happened to him?
14:29 He began to sink with it, till he turned back to Jesus and said
14:33 the shortest prayer in the Bible, "Lord--"
14:35 actually, there's a shorter prayer: Peter's prayer was,
14:37 "Lord, save me"; Jehoshaphat actually said, "Lord, help,"
14:41 that was all he said.
14:42 God answered his prayer.
14:45 So you got to take a step.
14:47 James 1:22, "Be doers of the word, not hearers only."
14:51 People say, "I believe, I believe," and never do anything
14:53 about it.
14:54 It's like the pastor who called his church together and said,
14:56 "Let's have a prayer meeting for this drought."
14:58 They were having a terrible drought there in Georgia.
15:02 And folks came, and right away the pastor looked around and
15:06 said, "All right, prayer meeting's over, we'll see
15:08 you Sunday."
15:09 They say, "Wait, you told us to come and pray about
15:11 the drought."
15:13 He says, "You're not serious about praying.
15:15 If you were serious, you would've brought umbrellas."
15:19 So when you come and you pray for rain, do you bring
15:22 your umbrella?
15:25 You need to take a step of faith.
15:28 Hebrews 11, by the way, if you want to know more about faith,
15:31 read Hebrews 11.
15:33 Hebrews 11, "By faith Noah, being divinely warned of things
15:37 not yet seen, he moved with godly fear."
15:41 He didn't just say, "Yeah, Lord, I believe there's a flood,"
15:44 he moved.
15:46 "With godly fear, he prepared an ark to the saving of his
15:49 household, by which he condemned the world and became heir of
15:52 righteousness which is according to faith."
15:55 This is one of the greatest acts in the Bible, one of the
15:57 greatest acts of faith is that Noah used all of his resources
16:02 to build an ark on dry land in a world where it had never rained
16:08 because he trusted God's word.
16:10 And then, you know what the incredible thing is?
16:11 After he did that, it takes a lot of faith to invite two
16:13 termites on the boat.
16:19 It had never rained before and he built a boat.
16:23 So, real faith, at some point, will put the promises of God
16:26 to test.
16:28 You read it, you pray it, then you act upon it, you got to
16:30 step out.
16:31 Someone said, "Faith sees the invisible, believes the
16:35 incredible, receives the impossible."
16:38 I think it was Augustine who said, "Faith is to believe what
16:42 you do not see; the reward of faith is to see what we
16:45 believe," and sometime you'll finally be rewarded with what
16:49 you believe.
16:51 And then, have patience and persistence.
16:55 So when you are praying about something particular, keep in
16:58 mind the eternal perspective, God lives for eternity.
17:01 You might say, "Lord, help me find my keys," and you wonder
17:03 why you don't open your eyes and there are your keys, you might
17:06 have to go search.
17:07 Doesn't Jesus say, "Seek and you'll find"?
17:09 It doesn't mean you've lost faith, you know, combine some
17:12 work with your faith, but it takes persistence.
17:17 Hebrews 6:12, says, "Do not become sluggish, but imitate
17:22 those who through faith and patience, faith and patience,
17:27 inherit the promises."
17:30 Revelation 14:12, "Here is the patience of the saints; here are
17:33 those who keep the commandments of God and the faith of Jesus."
17:37 Notice how many times you see these words together.
17:39 Did you catch it?
17:40 Faith, patience.
17:43 "I thought faith means you get what you want right away."
17:46 Faith means you hang on.
17:48 The faithful in the Bible are not just those that get their
17:50 promises answered, they're the ones who waited that extra five
17:54 minutes and they got their promises answered.
17:56 You need to hold on to the promises of God.
17:59 Victorious faith is often more than believing; sometimes, it
18:02 means believing a little longer than everyone else.
18:07 Hebrews 11, "By faith the walls of Jericho fell."
18:10 Did they fall the first time they marched around them or do
18:13 they have to go around them, how many times?
18:16 Thirteen, one time for six days, seven times on
18:21 the seventh day, right?
18:23 And probably about the sixth time on the seventh day, they
18:26 were getting tired, "How many times are we going to march
18:27 around this city?"
18:29 Joshua said, "One more time."
18:31 You've got to keep going.
18:32 So faith--it says the walls fell by faith, but that faith was
18:35 combined with a persistence and patience, as well as obedience.
18:41 Now, you know how your faith grows persistence and patience?
18:46 Through trial.
18:48 So if you say, "Lord, give me more persistent, patient faith,"
18:52 you know what you're asking for?
18:54 If you pray for patience, you're asking for delay, because you do
18:58 not learn patience by getting everything right away.
19:00 You know how to ruin a kid?
19:03 Give them everything they want right away.
19:07 They turn eight years old, you give them their own cell phone;
19:09 14, new car.
19:12 You're going to ruin them, aren't you?
19:15 If you want them to appreciate something, you got to make
19:18 them wait.
19:19 So if you say, "Lord, give me tenacity, give me patience," you
19:23 know what you're asking for.
19:26 A young Christian went to an older Christian for help, he
19:28 said, "Would you please pray for me, that I might be
19:29 more patient?"
19:31 He said, "Absolutely, let's kneel together."
19:33 The old man began to pray, "Lord, send this young man
19:35 tribulation in the morning, send him adversity in the afternoon,
19:39 send him trials in the evening."
19:41 And he shook his friend and said, "No, no, no, I didn't ask
19:43 for that, I asked for patience."
19:45 Said, "Ah, it is through tribulation we develop
19:49 patience," that's what the Bible says.
19:52 So do you really want faith?
19:55 Number five, if you want to have stronger faith, associate with
20:00 faithful people.
20:03 Proverbs 13:20, "He who walks with wise men will be wise, but
20:08 the companion of fools will be destroyed."
20:11 Hang around believers and you'll do more believing, amen?
20:16 You want to have more faith and you stay away from church and
20:19 you stay away from prayer meeting, you stay away from
20:21 Christian association, home bible study group?
20:24 Spend more time with Christians.
20:26 Hebrews 6:12, "That you do not become sluggish, but imitate
20:31 those who through faith and patience inherit the promise."
20:34 Now, I've used this verse twice, I want you to notice,
20:36 "Imitate those."
20:37 In order for you to imitate those with faith, you must be
20:39 around people with faith.
20:40 Does that make sense?
20:42 Does it?
20:43 1 Corinthians 11:1, Paul says, "Imitate me, as I
20:48 imitate Christ."
20:49 So follow those who are following Jesus.
20:53 And Matthew 5:14, Christ said, "Let them alone.
20:56 They are blind leaders of the blind.
20:58 And if the blind lead the blind, they'll both fall in the ditch."
21:02 Follow those who know where they're going, that have faith.
21:05 So stay positive, there's going to be difficulties, but look at
21:09 those difficulties as opportunities to strengthen
21:12 your faith.
21:14 You know, on any given day here in Northern California, you got
21:17 a couple of different birds that are flying around.
21:21 One of them is the vulture and the other one's a hummingbird.
21:24 Their both birds, they both fly, they both live in the same
21:26 neighborhood, but they've got very different attitudes.
21:30 The vulture is flying around, it is looking for some poor bunny
21:33 that got run over by a car and they want to eat something dead.
21:39 They're looking for that which stinketh, they're looking for
21:43 that has no future.
21:46 And then you've got the hummingbird flying over the same
21:49 country but it is not looking for dead skunks, it's looking
21:53 for bright blossoms and sweet nectar that is the promise of
21:58 new fruit.
22:01 There's two kinds of people out there, you got buzzards and you
22:03 get hummingbirds; don't hang out with the buzzards.
22:08 You sit there--they're the ones that, you know, you're talking
22:10 to them and say, "It's a beautiful day," and they say,
22:12 "Yeah, but you know, it's going to flood," or, "Everything's
22:15 going to dry out now."
22:17 And it just, everything is always got to be negative,
22:19 they're just contesting anything positive.
22:20 If you want to have more faith, find out people that have faith,
22:24 hang out with them, 'cause that kind of faith can be contagious.
22:29 And finally point seven, your faith will grow as you give it
22:34 away; share your faith.
22:37 Faith does not grow because it has come to you, faith grows
22:42 because it goes through you; faith is for giving away.
22:49 Tell others what God has done for you.
22:52 1 Timothy 4:16, "Take heed to yourself into the doctrine.
22:58 Continue in them, for in doing this you will save both yourself
23:02 and those who hear you."
23:03 You are saving yourself as you share your faith with others.
23:09 Daniel 12:3, "Those who are wise will shine Like the brightness
23:13 of the firmament, And those who turn many to righteousness Like
23:16 the stars forever and ever."
23:18 Turning others to righteousness.
23:21 You want to be able to share your faith.
23:23 Are you part of a home study group?
23:24 Get part of one, invite others to your home, some of the other
23:27 believers and then you can invite guests.
23:29 Doesn't have to have a lot of people, you know, three or four,
23:33 "Two or three gathered in my name, I'm there."
23:35 Have a small study group, get together, have deliberate times
23:38 to share your faith with others, look for opportunities wherever
23:42 you go.
23:43 Kind of neat, yesterday, I went to get a Subway sandwich.
23:45 Now, you can't always do what I do, because as soon as I walked
23:49 in the store, the guy's making sandwiches there, he says, "I
23:51 just saw you on TV."
23:54 That doesn't always happen, it's neat when it happens so it's
23:56 kind of neat, 'course I had my "Amazing Facts" hat on.
23:59 And he's serving two ladies and they're looking at me going,
24:04 "How'd that happen?
24:06 How'd you end up on TV?"
24:07 And I said, "Well, I'm a pastor in the area," and we weren't too
24:12 far away from Sierra College, I said, "You know that church
24:14 that's going up on top of the hill?"
24:15 "Yeah."
24:16 Said, "That's where we're going to be, we'd like to have you
24:18 when we open, come visit us."
24:21 And so I was encouraged when I went away.
24:24 Every time you get an opportunity to say something to
24:26 someone else about Jesus, as small as you might think it is.
24:30 I've got a friend writing a book right now, I haven't seen
24:33 the book yet but it's a great title, it's called, "60-Second
24:37 Evangelism: How to do Evangelism in a Minute."
24:41 I thought, that's great, because, you know, some of the
24:42 best evangelism can happen in a minute.
24:44 Everybody can do something, amen?
24:48 So finally, as we're talking about what you can do to grow
24:51 your faith, I don't want to make it sound like it depends on you.
24:56 Jesus said the disciples had small faith, yet He saved them.
24:59 Why?
25:01 because He is faithful, His mercies are new every day.
25:04 I'm so thankful for His faithfulness.
25:07 Now, you know where we really need the faith?
25:10 Is we need to have faith that God can save us from our sins
25:13 and that He can give us power to have victory, to be new
25:15 creatures, to be born again.
25:18 Isn't that your desire?
