00:29 ♪♪
00:34 Doug Batchelor: There was an amazing story in the Bible,
00:36 the prophet Elisha was sort of the secret weapon
00:40 for the king of Israel.
00:42 Every time the king of Syria wanted to launch an attack
00:47 on Israel, he wanted to ambush them, he'd have his spies find
00:51 out where the king of Israel was going to be traveling and try
00:53 and get them through some narrow canyon so he could surprise him.
00:57 But every time they tried to launch these surprise
01:00 attacks, it seems like the king of Israel found out in advance.
01:04 And the king of Syria was so frustrated he said to his
01:06 servants, "One of you must be a spy.
01:09 How else can the king of Israel always know what my secret plans
01:12 are?"
01:14 And one of the servants for the king of Syria said,
01:17 "It's none of us, we're not betraying you."
01:19 He said, "It's Elisha the prophet in Israel.
01:22 He knows the things that you say in your bedroom, which would
01:26 make any king nervous.
01:28 He said, "Well, we can't have that!
01:30 Where is he?"
01:32 He said, "Well, he's staying in a little town called Dothan."
01:34 Dothan by the way, is where Joseph went to look for his
01:37 brothers, it means wells, two wells.
01:40 So the king of Syria says, Look, let's, get the army together.
01:45 And a great army came, and during the night they
01:48 surrounded this little hamlet of Dothan, where Elisha was
01:51 with some of the people and his servant.
01:54 Early in the morning, his servant wakes up to go
01:56 to the well and get water and he looks over the little walls
01:59 of Dothan, and they were just big enough to keep the cattle
02:01 out, and he sees the glimmer of armor and hears the snort
02:05 of the horses.
02:07 And his eyes get adjusted and he realized they are now surrounded
02:09 by the Assyrian army.
02:11 In a panic he runs and he shakes Elisha awake and says, "Alas,
02:14 Master, what will we do?"
02:17 Elisha doesn't look one bit troubled.
02:19 He gets up and he walks through the door, and then he
02:21 walked outside the city walls, and he prays a prayer.
02:26 2 Kings 6 verse 17, "And Elisha prayed, and said, 'Lord, I pray
02:31 thee, open his eyes that he may see.'
02:35 And the Lord opened the eyes of the young man, and he saw.
02:38 And behold, the mountain was full of horses and chariots
02:43 of fire round about Elisha."
02:46 You've heard that expression, chariots of fire.
02:49 And when Elisha saw Elijah taken up to heaven, that's when he got
02:53 his first glimpse of these chariots and horses of fire.
02:56 These are the ministering spirits of God.
02:58 I don't think that God is galloping around up in heaven
03:02 on an Appaloosa.
03:04 You know, this is the Biblical terminology to talk about, you
03:09 know, it says, When Elisha was caught up, chariots and horses
03:13 of fire using the spiritual.
03:15 It says, "I looked over Jordan and what did I see?
03:17 A band full of angels."
03:19 That's good theology.
03:20 That's what they were.
03:21 These are angels of God that they saw protecting them.
03:25 The mysterious world of angels, there's a lot
03:30 of misunderstandings about angels, which is why we're
03:32 talking about it today.
03:33 Typically when people see pictures of angels they see fat
03:37 little babies on clouds looking extremely bored.
03:43 More times than not, if you type angels in the Internet and look
03:46 at pictures, you're going to see they looked like Greek
03:48 goddesses, they're ladies.
03:52 Are angels male, female, or babies?
03:56 Now typically when angels appeared in the Bible, it says
03:59 they appeared as men.
04:02 And it says when the disciples saw Jesus ascend to heaven,
04:04 there stood by them two men in white raiment at the tomb.
04:07 Says they were men.
04:09 When the angels came for judgments on Sodom, says
04:12 there were men.
04:13 There is one vision in Zechariah, where he said, "I
04:17 raised my eyes," Zechariah 5:9, "and there were two women,
04:20 coming in the wind in their wings, for they were the wings
04:24 of a stork, and they lifted up a basket."
04:26 This is an apocalyptic vision.
04:28 So it never says they're angels, it's really a vision.
04:32 Typically they appear as men, but don't take that too far,
04:36 because angels don't have gender like we do.
04:39 Jesus made it pretty clear in Mark 12:25, "For when they
04:43 rise from the dead, they neither marry or are given in marriage,
04:47 but are like the angels in heaven."
04:49 Angels do not procreate like humans.
04:52 Sometimes people read in Genesis chapter 6, "And the sons of God
04:57 saw the daughters of men that they were fair and took them
04:59 wives of all they chose."
05:02 And you know, in some Bibles you might even have one here,
05:04 translates that these fallen angels married humans and had
05:09 babies that were giants.
05:12 That is one of the goofiest teachings I've ever heard.
05:15 Angels do not procreate with humans.
05:18 Jesus is very clear about that.
05:19 That verse, the sons of God are talking about the children
05:23 of Seth, Adam, and Eve that were faithful, they were still
05:26 worshiping God, they were offering there at the garden,
05:28 at the gates of the Garden of Eden.
05:31 And then you had Cain, he departed from the Lord, and they
05:34 had two separate groups of people, and Cain was in us,
05:38 children of men.
05:39 They weren't the sons of God.
05:41 How did he become a son of God?
05:42 Behold with manner of love the father's bestowed on us that
05:45 we should be called sons of God.
05:46 When we believe we are adopted in, God said to his son when he
05:51 was baptized, this is my beloved son.
05:53 And when we're baptized and we accept Christ, we become sons
05:56 and daughters of God.
05:58 So it's when the children of Seth began to intermarry
06:01 with the daughters of Cain then wickedness was great in this
06:04 world because of the mixed marriages.
06:07 It had nothing to do with angels marrying people.
06:11 They don't have gender that way.
06:13 Angels do not procreate with humans.
06:15 Angels are created, they're made by God.
06:19 He makes them uniquely.
06:21 And Lucifer may have been one of the first of his angels.
06:25 There are typically three terms that we find being used
06:29 in the New Testament.
06:30 It's usually angel, means messenger, angelos.
06:34 In the Hebrew you've got malakh, or malach, if you say it
06:37 with a Jewish pronunciation.
06:41 You've got the seraphim.
06:44 A seraph is one seraphim, cherub is one, cherubim would be two.
06:49 And these are the ministering spirits.
06:51 Literally seraphim means the burning ones.
06:54 And the malakh is, they're like deputies.
06:57 They're the people of authority.
06:59 It's also translated messengers.
07:02 And so there seem to be different levels of angels,
07:05 different ranks of angels, and they're organized servants
07:10 of God.
07:12 You read about them in--By the way, the word cherubim means
07:15 minister, more precisely.
07:17 Hebrews 1 verse 14, speaking of the angels, "Are they not all
07:22 ministering spirits sent forth to minister for those who will
07:27 inherit eternal salvation?"
07:30 God has his army of angels that watch over us to minister.
07:34 Psalm 103 verse 20, "Bless the Lord, you his angels, who
07:39 excel in strength, who do his word, heeding the voice of
07:43 his word.
07:44 Bless the Lord, all you.
07:45 his hosts, you ministers of his, who do his pleasure."
07:49 These are ministering spirits.
07:52 Sometimes in the Bible it calls it--He's called the Lord
07:57 of hosts, so there you would have the Lord of angels.
08:02 One place you can see where he's called the Lord of Sabaoth.
08:05 That doesn't mean the Lord of the Sabbath, It's
08:06 a completely different word, it means the Lord of armies.
08:09 It's an army of angels.
08:11 You read in Daniel 7 verse 10, "A fiery stream issued and came
08:15 forth from before him.
08:17 A thousand thousands ministered to him.
08:21 And ten thousand times ten thousand stood before him."
08:25 Because surrounding the dwelling place of God are clouds
08:29 of angels.
08:30 When Jesus comes it says he's coming like he left.
08:33 How did he leave?
08:34 He was caught up into this cloud, and not H2O,
08:38 but a brilliant cloud of holy ones, burning ones, the angels.
08:41 And when he comes again, it says he will come with all
08:44 the angels.
08:46 He's coming in a cloud of angels.
08:49 We look through the telescope and we see these nebula and we
08:51 call them nebulous clouds.
08:54 But as we get a little closer what we thought were cloudy
08:57 images we find out these are actually burning suns.
09:01 And they just looked like clouds from a distance.
09:04 And so when Christ comes, he's coming with clouds of angels.
09:09 Now, I probably should say right here, you don't wanna worship
09:13 angels.
09:14 See, there are good angels and there are bad angels.
09:16 "There was war in heaven, that great dragon, the serpent, was
09:20 cast out, who deceives the whole world.
09:22 He was cast to the earth, and his angels--"
09:27 Satan means adversary.
09:28 He's gone from Lucifer to adversary.
09:31 "They who deceives the whole world, he was cast to the earth
09:34 and his angels were cast out with him."
09:37 You read in 2 Peter 2 verse 4, "For God did not spare
09:40 the angels who sinned."
09:42 Yup, there are angels who sin.
09:43 You know what that means about angels?
09:45 In order for you to sin you must have a free will.
09:48 Angels are unique and individual.
09:51 If God doesn't make two snowflakes the same, and if
09:54 every human on the world has got a different iris
09:56 and fingerprint, then why would you think that God has a big
10:00 cookie-cutter factory where he makes his angels and he just
10:02 stamps them out and they're all the same?
10:04 I'm sure these angels are unique.
10:06 They are created, not born, they're created by God to live
10:09 forever, and they're probably, I don't know what their, you know,
10:12 they part their hair differently and they've got some different
10:14 idiosyncrasies, I'm not sure.
10:16 But they've got their unique personalities, yet they're holy,
10:19 the good ones, and then you get the fallen ones Jude 6, "And
10:25 the angels who did not keep their first estate, their proper
10:27 domain, but they left their own abode, he has reserved
10:31 in everlasting chains under darkness."
10:34 Bible says that one angel's going to come down in chains,
10:38 Satan.
10:39 And these chains are, they are chained to our world.
10:42 They cannot leave.
10:43 They're not free like the other ministering spirits.
10:46 In everlasting chains under darkness for the judgment
10:49 of the great day.
10:51 Angels said to Christ, the fallen angels, "Have you
10:53 come to judge us before the time?"
10:54 They know their judgment's coming.
10:56 Satan's come down with great wrath, because he what?
10:59 Knows his time is short.
11:01 God's fixed a day in which he'll judge the world and Satan
11:04 and his angels.
11:06 The Bible says, "Depart you cursed into everlasting fire
11:08 prepared for Satan and his angels."
11:10 So there are some bad angels out there.
11:12 How many?
11:14 I don't know, I can tell you the percentage.
11:15 So Satan, when he was cast out, he drew a third of the stars,
11:20 were drawn in the wake of the tail of the dragon.
11:24 A third of the angels followed Lucifer in his rebellion
11:26 against God.
11:28 We don't know how many that is, I'm guessing billions.
11:30 Because, if God has guardian angels for each person,
11:33 and they're eight billion people roughly in the world, then
11:37 there's gotta be a lot of good angels.
11:39 And we're not the only world that they take care of.
11:42 Look at how big the cosmos is.
11:45 I'm sure they're going through the whole creation
11:47 of God.
11:48 So there are billions of angels, I would think.

12:27 Doug Batchelor: So, what do the angels do?
12:30 Angels guard and protect.
12:33 Job 1:9, "Satan was angry with the Lord, he said, 'Does
12:37 Job fear God for nothing?
12:39 Have you not made a hedge about him, and about his
12:41 household, around all that he has?"'
12:43 Is it a hedge of bushes?
12:45 Or was he hedged in with the Lord?
12:48 Bible says, "The angel of the Lord," Psalm 34:7, "The
12:51 angel of the Lord encamps round about those who fear him."
12:55 You sometimes, you just--I remember one time, you all got
12:58 your stories, I posted I was going to preach about angels
13:01 today online, all these people started telling me their angel
13:03 story, because I think it's really neat.
13:05 And don't build your theology on angel stories.
13:09 When someone says, I had an angel spoke to me, you gotta
13:12 be careful.
13:13 It might be an angel that spoke to them.
13:15 You know, there's a lying prophet in the Bible.
13:18 He went to a prophet of the Lord, God told that
13:21 prophet after you pronounce your judgement on King Jeroboam, you
13:24 do not eat bread, you do not drink water in this place, you
13:27 go home, you do not pass go.
13:31 Well he was on his way home, and this false prophet said, God
13:34 told me you're supposed to come to my house.
13:36 An angel of the Lord, he says, told me disregard what you heard
13:40 earlier, I got a message from an angel, you're to come
13:42 to my house.
13:44 He listened to that false prophet, who had an angelic
13:47 message, and he died.
13:49 And so you gotta be very careful when people say, an angel
13:51 told me.
13:53 I mean, people have angel experiences, I believe that.
13:55 Don't base your theology on someone's angelic experience.
13:59 But they got all kinds of movies and TV programs and people talk
14:03 about this, and they'll say, yeah, angels were talking to my
14:05 dead relatives in heaven.
14:07 And so there's a lot of bad theology that has come
14:09 through that corridor of people saying an angel told me.
14:14 But I do believe angels guide.
14:17 And I remember one time in particular, I was driving
14:21 to Central Church, and I always have to cross several streets
14:25 where there's lights.
14:26 And I'm an aggressive driver, and if the light's green, you
14:29 know what that means?
14:31 Go fast!
14:32 And I'm going' along, and I'm coming up and the light is
14:35 green, and I felt the strongest urge to hit my brakes on
14:41 a green light.
14:42 And I hit my brakes and slowed down.
14:44 Somebody ran the light, went right through, they would've
14:47 T-boned me, they were speeding right through.
14:50 And I knew right then that an angel had said, Hit your
14:52 brakes.
14:53 Because everything else in my world would've said, Go.
14:56 Have you had experiences like that?
14:58 And it just, it was uncanny, it's like a voice told me.
15:01 So often when we say the Lord did this for me, or the Lord did
15:05 that for me, it's not generally the Lord.
15:07 The Lord works through his agency, it's usually angels.
15:10 God gets the glory, but he often works through his angels.
15:13 And he's guiding them.
15:14 And people will say, Oh, the devil made me do this,
15:17 and the devil tempted me.
15:19 It's typically not the devil.
15:20 Matter of fact, the devil doesn't know who most of us are.
15:22 God knows all of us, but the devil, he's not
15:25 omniscient, he doesn't know everybody.
15:27 It's usually his fallen angels that are doing these things.
15:32 And so I just, the Bible says a lot about it.
15:35 It's probably healthy for us to know what the Word says.
15:38 So you've got these angels, and they guide us.
15:43 God told Moses, "I will send an angel before you to keep you
15:47 in the way, to bring you to the place that I prepared."
15:50 Angels do guide and, if we ask for it, I think they're more
15:53 inclined.
15:55 Angels have feelings.
15:57 Now, you have a guardian angel, but I don't recommend you try
16:01 and talk to 'em.
16:03 And I know some people, they say, I've given my angel
16:06 the name Wilbur, and I'm always talking to Wilbur.
16:09 So you gotta be very careful.
16:11 You might think it's Wilbur and it could be some other
16:13 wicked angel named Ernest.
16:18 So nowhere in the Bible are we told to talk to the angels.
16:21 Angels might appear to us, but talks about worshiping
16:26 angels, that's forbidden in the Bible, the angels
16:30 loathe that.
16:31 John fell on his knees, John Revelation 19, to worship
16:35 the angel.
16:36 The angel says, "See you do not do it."
16:38 And Daniel and Ezekiel and they all saw angels, they felt
16:42 inclined to fall down and worship.
16:43 The Angels always pointed the glory and the worship back
16:46 to God, because it's a sin to have any other God besides
16:50 the Lord, right?
16:51 Angels are co-laborers with us.
16:54 Now, people, the Bible tells us, that we are made a little lower
16:58 than the angels.
17:00 We do not have the same power and strength and knowledge
17:04 and connection with God that angels have.
17:07 But humans are made in the image of God and, in some ways, we
17:11 have advantages.
17:12 And one of those is something that really bothered the devil.
17:15 Humans, like God, made in the image of God, are able
17:18 to procreate in our own image through an act of cooperative
17:22 love.
17:23 The devil can't create life.
17:25 And it really bothered him that, in this world, these humans
17:29 could procreate, and he couldn't.
17:31 And so, in some ways, you know, we've got blessing.
17:34 But angels have emotions.
17:36 "All the morning stars sang together, and they shouted
17:39 for joy."
17:41 Jesus said, Luke 15, "Likewise there'll be more joy in heaven
17:45 over one sinner who repents than over ninety-nine just persons
17:50 who need no repentance."
17:51 So if it's true that angels can feel joy when the lost are
17:55 saved, how do angels feel when people are lost?
18:01 Do angels feel sadness?
18:03 What do you think the angels did when Jesus was on the cross?
18:06 Were they strumming their harps, or is it like Psalm 137, where
18:10 they hung their harps on the willows, how can we sing
18:12 the song of Zion in Babylon?
18:15 And the angels, it's like when Daniel was in the lion's den, it
18:18 says, "In the king's palace, there was no music brought
18:21 before him, and the angels were sad."
18:25 They've got feelings, they've got emotions.
18:29 Even good angels can be devastating, they're very
18:33 powerful, they can be deadly.
18:36 Psalms 78:49, "He cast on them the fierceness of his anger,
18:41 wrath, indignation, and trouble.
18:43 By sending angels of destruction among them."
18:48 1 Chronicles 21:16, "Then David lifted his eyes."
18:51 This is when David numbered Israel and a plague was going
18:54 through the land.
18:55 "David lifted his eyes and saw the angel of the Lord standing
18:59 between heaven and earth, having a drawn sword stretched
19:02 out over Jerusalem."
19:04 You know, we've sometimes heard about the grim reaper, you've
19:09 heard the expression the angel of death.
19:11 Many times in the Bible these angels of death are not
19:13 diabolical, they're actually good angels that were sent
19:16 with judgment.
19:18 "And David prayed and the angel put his sword back in
19:21 its sheath."
19:23 Acts chapter 12, King Herod was trying to wipe out the church.
19:25 The beginning of Acts chapter 12, Herod the King kills
19:29 the apostle James.
19:31 He sees it pleases the Jews.
19:33 He says, I'm going to kill Peter too.
19:35 You see a battle going on, a spiritual battle, a great
19:37 controversy between the Word of God and the devil working
19:41 through Herod the King.
19:42 Herods are typically not good in the New Testament, and try
19:47 and kill the babies in Bethlehem.
19:49 And you know what happens at the end of the story?
19:51 Peter escapes from prison, Herod then makes a speech, and they
19:57 say, Oh, it's the voice of God.
19:58 And he doesn't give the glory to God.
20:00 Herod wants to be God, like Lucifer.
20:02 It says, "And then the angel of the Lord struck him, because
20:05 he did not give God glory.
20:07 And he was eaten by worms and he died."
20:09 By the way, Josephus actually mentions that very event
20:12 in history.
20:14 And then, as we began our message this morning, we noticed
20:17 that throughout the life of Jesus we see angels.
20:22 Every time in the life of Christ when the devil would try
20:25 to destroy him, you remember Nazareth?
20:28 Well, first of all, they wanted to kill him as a baby
20:30 in Bethlehem.
20:31 He was delivered.
20:33 Through his youth, I'm sure angels were guarding Christ.
20:38 Can you imagine how vulnerable Jesus would've been as a child
20:41 and a baby if it was not for angels that were guarding
20:44 him?
20:46 And then when he began his ministry, he fast 40 days
20:49 in the wilderness.
20:51 You know it says after he fasted, It's his angels came
20:52 and ministered to him.
20:54 I believe they did for him what the angel did for Elijah when he
20:56 was hungry.
20:58 I think they fed him at the end of those 40 days.
21:01 And then, in the garden of Gethsemane, when Jesus--
21:05 Well, several times through his life they tried tried to kill
21:08 Jesus.
21:09 You know, they wanted to throw him off a cliff in Nazareth, it
21:11 says, and he passed through their midst.
21:12 Who do you think parted the crowd so Jesus could pass
21:15 through?
21:16 I think the angels of God said, This is not as time.
21:20 Other times, they took up stones to stone Jesus, and Jesus was
21:24 protected.
21:26 And in the garden of Gethsemane, when he prayed and he wept three
21:30 times and said, Not my will, thy will be done.
21:33 You know, at that moment, it may have been Gabriel.
21:37 We don't know who took the place of Lucifer, maybe Gabriel.
21:40 Gabriel may have already been in one of those positions.
21:44 But I think Gabriel came and it says angels ministered to him.
21:48 I think they were there to comfort him, but do you know
21:51 at that moment in the garden, as the Angels, left him, he got
21:56 up and he went to the disciples, he said, Now is the hour
21:58 of darkness.
22:00 And as Jonah was three days and three nights in the belly
22:03 of the fish, the sufferings of Christ began that night.
22:08 God's presence, God's angelic protection, was withdrawn
22:13 from Jesus for the first time in his life, maybe the first
22:17 time in history.
22:20 And the devil and his forces had their way with Christ.
22:24 He paid the penalty, they tortured him, they tried
22:27 to extract all the suffering they could.
22:29 More than anything, they wanted Jesus to sin, because then
22:32 the plan of salvation would have imploded.
22:35 And so they didn't just want to kill him, they wanted him
22:38 to do something wrong, to sin, because then there'd be no hope
22:41 for us.
22:43 And the angels had to watch and they had to veil their
22:45 presence, just like you and I can't see them.
22:48 And Peter said, Lord I'll save you.
22:51 And Jesus said, Don't you know I could pray for 12 legions
22:53 of angels right now?
22:55 That means they weren't there helping him, they withdrew
22:58 from him.
23:00 They were watching as he hung on the cross, they watched
23:03 the whole scene.
23:04 They watched the mob, they took careful notes.
23:06 You know, angels are recording, not only are they guiding.
23:10 Jesus said, In the judgment we'll give an account for every
23:12 idle word that we speak.
23:15 And I think God's got these angels, the angels are there
23:17 when the books are open.
23:19 And I don't know if the Lord uses a hard drive or how he does
23:21 that, but he's got some way the angels record.
23:25 Talks about books.
23:27 And angels were watching and they were recording those
23:29 who mocked Christ on the cross.
23:32 And they took notes when that thief said, Lord, remember me.
23:36 They saw when Jesus was laid in the tomb and the angels could
23:40 not wait for Sunday morning when the signal was given that Jesus
23:46 had paid the penalty of suffering and death.
23:50 He had fulfilled those three days and three nights
23:52 in the hands of Satan, the heart of the earth suffering
23:56 for the sins of the world.
23:58 And God said, Okay go for it.
24:00 And they came and threw aside the stone.
24:02 And angels were there to tell the women.
24:05 when he rose.
24:06 Angels were there when he ascended to heaven, and angels
24:11 are gonna be with him when he comes again.
24:14 It's good to know you're not alone, isn't it?
24:17 You know, Jesus said, I'll be with you always.
24:19 Now Christ is at the right hand of the Father.
24:21 So how is Christ with us?
24:22 Through his spirit?
24:23 And that same spirit is given, God the spirit to the angels,
24:27 and it's given to us, and it's reassuring to know that they're
24:32 always here, present.
24:34 It's also little sobering.
24:37 Jesus said, If you confess my name in this evil and adulterous
24:41 generation, I will confess your name before my Father and his
24:44 angels.
24:45 If you deny me and my name in this evil and adulterous
24:49 generation, I will deny your name before my Father and his
24:51 angels.
24:52 And you look in the book of job, and you see God confessing
24:55 the name of Job before the angels.
24:59 That means that, when we stand up for God in our daily battles,
25:04 the Bible says angels desire to look into the things that are
25:07 happening.
25:09 This plan of salvation is being acted out on a stage, it's
25:11 a theatre to the universe is watching.
25:15 So it's comforting to know angels are watching.
25:17 It can make you nervous to know angels are watching.
25:19 I hope it'll help keep you in the way to know that all
25:23 things are naked and open to the eyes of him with whom we
25:26 have to do.
25:28 God sees everything, amen?
25:30 The eyes of the Lord run to and fro through the earth
25:34 looking for those through whom he can show himself mighty.
