00:08 even what to believe, but there are answers
00:10 you can depend on.
00:11 Hi, I'm Dr. James Markham.
00:14 Join me for Bible RX, a program exploring the
00:18 healthcare world.
00:19 Looking at all aspects of healing, using the Bible
00:23 and biblical prescriptions as the ultimate
00:26 source of truth.
00:49 Have you ever had a pain in the back?
00:51 Or have you ever been a pain in someone else's back?
00:54 That is what we are going to be talking about today.
00:56 Pains in the back and other parts of your body.
00:59 No one likes to have pain.
01:00 Part of healing is to get rid of all pain.
01:03 I have a very special guest Dr. Eric Olsen,
01:06 and he is a Chiropractor.
01:07 He is going to educate us on how to avoid
01:10 pains in the back.
01:14 Back pain is one of the most prevalent ailments
01:17 that affects our society.
01:19 No one likes to have pain in the back,
01:21 it messes everything up.
01:23 You can't work, you can't sleep.
01:24 The relationships everything is
01:26 destroyed when you have
01:28 chronic back pain.
01:29 Today we have an expert on chronic back pain,
01:31 we have Dr. Eric Olsen who is going to answer
01:34 questions about this.
01:35 Dr. Eric thank you for joining us!
01:37 Thanks for having me.
01:38 Tell me what got you interested in the
01:39 field of Chiropracting?
01:41 Well I guess it is always I had to learn the hard way.
01:45 When I was in my early twenties, I was trying to decide
01:49 what I wanted to do with my life.
01:51 I was in the competitive bodybuilding at that time and
01:54 felt that physical therapy would be a good fit for me.
01:59 I was out doing some work one evening and ended up
02:03 getting hit by a car and flew thirty feet over the car
02:07 into a snow bank.
02:09 I ended up getting taken to a hospital on a backboard
02:11 and ended up having neck problems, shoulder problems
02:14 and low back problems.
02:15 With that pain when referring down my leg that
02:18 people know as the sciatica.
02:19 At that point I started to go to physical therapy.
02:24 I was seen an orthopedist and was trying to do anything
02:28 I could to get feeling better.
02:29 Unfortunately I wasn't getting a whole lot better.
02:32 You are having a lot of pain?
02:33 I was having a lot of pain.
02:34 I was hobbling around on crutches.
02:36 My orthopedist told me I would ever lift weights again.
02:39 It was a very discouraging time for me.
02:42 When everything failed they said my next option
02:46 was back surgery.
02:47 At that point in time, that wasn't a good option
02:51 for me being so young.
02:53 My dad said I'm going to take you to a Chiropractor.
02:55 Okay! - all I knew is that I grew up in a medical family.
02:59 All I knew about Chiropractor's was they popped up your
03:03 neck and think they could cure everything
03:04 known to mankind.
03:05 I wasn't really big and having somebody pop my neck,
03:08 so I told my dad I wasn't interested,
03:10 and he told me he wanted me to go.
03:12 So I ended up going.
03:14 I remember the first day the man went over his angle
03:18 on what was going on with me.
03:19 He laid me down on a table and adjusted my back.
03:23 The pain went out of my leg immediately.
03:27 Now it doesn't always work that way for people, but for
03:31 me at that point in time it was an incredible thing.
03:35 I said, would you do that again please?
03:37 So I ended up going to him.
03:40 I was going every day at the beginning.
03:43 As I started holding my adjustment longer periods
03:46 of time, and he held me back on how often I went
03:48 to a point where he said I needed to get back to the
03:50 gym and start working out again.
03:51 I started seeing healthcare from two different perspectives.
03:57 I decided at that point in time that some of the conceptions
04:02 I had about Chiropractor work were based on ignorance, or what
04:07 I had heard in didn't really know they were factual.
04:09 I decided to go Chiropractic school,
04:12 at that point in time.
04:13 Well you know there are lots of healers out there and
04:17 we have talked about modern medicine, there is
04:19 a place for that.
04:20 Chiropractic, there is a place for all sorts of healing.
04:23 I guess you found this out first hand?
04:25 Yes I did.
04:26 Well we have collected questions from all over the
04:28 United States and world regarding back pain and
04:31 Chiropractering and we thought we would answer them.
04:33 Some we may not be able to answer,
04:34 but we are going to do our best to try.
04:36 We'll give it a whirl.
04:37 This first one comes from Megan,
04:38 and Megan writes us from Arizona:
04:46 I guess, what is a Chiropractor, in your mind?
04:50 A chiropractor, in my mind, we have formal definitions of what
04:54 Chiropractor's, you got to know philosophy,
04:55 Art, and science and all that.
04:57 To me a Chiropractor is a joint doctor.
05:00 A Chiropractor looks at the back or the spine,
05:03 we don't solely treat the spine or adjust the spine,
05:06 adjust shoulders, adjust knees and ankles.
05:09 Any joint can be adjusted.
05:12 The word adjust, what does the word adjust mean?
05:15 And adjustment is what we do is a Chiropractor,
05:18 some people call it and manipulation.
05:21 It is when people say they pop your neck,
05:24 or pop your back.
05:25 Sometimes a Chiropractor will do it that way,
05:27 just find what joint is fixed.
05:30 He will give a push in there to restore
05:31 motion to that joint.
05:32 You can do that manually, you can do with other
05:35 equipment, like what is called the drop table.
05:37 I have in the office were it has pieces that
05:40 will pop up and you give a push on certain spot
05:42 and the table will drop down and restore motion
05:45 to that fixated joint that way.
05:47 I do a lot of instrument adjusting in my office.
05:50 It is nothing more than a little hand-held instrument,
05:53 people call it a little jackhammer.
05:55 You can set the tension on it and you pull
05:58 a little trigger and the thing just taps.
06:00 It is no more pressure than that right there.
06:02 You just find a joint that is not moving correctly,
06:04 and you get on it and restore motion to that joint.
06:07 But most importantly the whole Chiropractic premise is the fact
06:11 that when we were created it was called inate
06:15 intelligence or God-given intelligence that somehow
06:18 comes down to our brain, down our spinal cord and out
06:20 our spinal nerve. - right!
06:21 Our spinal nerves control and coordinate every
06:25 function of our body to every tissue cell.
06:28 So if there is a misalignment in the spine,
06:32 and that is what a Chiropractor calls a subluxation,
06:34 it is just a misalignment.
06:36 It is less than the dislocation,
06:37 but that joint gets fixed.
06:39 When that happens it puts pressure on that nerve
06:42 and may not cut the function of that nerve off
06:46 completely, it may just put enough pressure on there
06:48 were the proper signal is not getting to the
06:51 body part correctly.
06:52 We call that a state of dis-ease meaning a lack of ease.
06:57 Left like that over time can lead to longer problems
07:01 from tissue damage which leads to a state of disease.
07:05 Right, right!
07:06 So mainly the Chiropractor really just tries
07:09 to align our bodies the way we were created.
07:11 Yes, just try to turn the power back on,
07:14 and remove the interference, and let that signal
07:16 get to where it belongs and the tissue will begin healing itself
07:20 and the body will repair.
07:21 We believe the power that created the body has
07:23 the ability to heal the body.
07:26 Let's go to our next question.
07:28 Hope that answered your question Megan.
07:29 The next question is from Raleigh in South Carolina.
07:32 And Raleigh says:
07:42 I guess it's up to the individual.
07:44 That is an individual question,
07:46 for me I had disk problems.
07:48 The term disk slipping is kind of a loose term,
07:51 it doesn't slide out and then slide in because it is
07:55 attached to the vertebrae above and one below,
07:57 but a disk can bulge.
07:58 That is the problem that I had.
08:00 I went to an orthopedist first and was referred to
08:04 physical therapy and ended up at a Chiropractor's office.
08:07 Hindsight, I would tell somebody what we do as
08:13 professional Chiropractor's, there is no harmful side
08:17 effects to it.
08:18 So I try and say try a Chiropractor first,
08:20 do drugs second, and surgery last.
08:23 So that would be my advice.
08:25 It would be to ask or find a good Chiropractor in your town.
08:28 Go and consult with them, if it doesn't work then you
08:32 can work in conjunction with a medical doctor as well.
08:35 Okay that's good.
08:36 I think you have already answered this next one.
08:38 This is from Caleb in North Carolina, He says:
08:47 He wants to know if it is a shot?
08:48 No it is not a shot.
08:49 Is there any pain involved when you say you are
08:51 manipulating the joints to try and get them in line?
08:53 Is there much pain with that because you would think
08:55 if you had the pain to begin with you might move it
08:58 the wrong way and there could be more pain?
09:00 But if you move it to the right the pain goes away.
09:03 Sure, then again it depends on the person,
09:06 and how bad they are.
09:08 If you have a person coming in all inflamed and bent
09:10 over antalgic and it takes them a few minutes just to lay flat
09:15 on a table, with a patient like, that my office, I prefer
09:17 to do instrument adjusting because they cannot
09:20 handle much more than that.
09:22 As they get better than you can go to other forms of
09:25 adjustment and do a little more aggressive to restore
09:28 the motion to that joint.
09:29 Some doctors will never do that, some doctors will do
09:32 just instrument adjusting only.
09:34 Other Chiropractors will only do manipulative therapies,
09:38 so I would tell a patient find what you think
09:41 you are comfortable with.
09:43 I do everything in my office, some when a patient comes
09:46 into my office and if they have been to a Chiropractor,
09:48 I will ask them how they had been adjusted before.
09:51 I just try to stay within a patient's comfort zone.
09:54 Some people come in and say, I'm scared to death to
09:56 have my neck adjusted.
09:57 I say I understand I was too!
09:59 Then I will show them an instrument and they will
10:02 say what is that?
10:03 They didn't even know that that was an option for care.
10:05 If there is anything that I could express to people is
10:08 the fact that there are a lot of ways of being adjusted
10:11 and if you are fearful of having, your back, your neck
10:15 we'll say popped, manipulated, or adjusted, then find
10:18 somebody that does instrument adjusting.
10:20 Then you won't have to hear any of that.
10:22 Well Dr. Olson this is very interesting, very interesting
10:25 We are going to take a short break right now and we will
10:28 be back to answer more questions in just this brief moment.
