00:05 - Oh yes, sir.
00:06 You stay right there.
00:08 Stay right there. I'll be right back.
00:10 (gentle guitar music)
00:13 Hey, welcome everybody to a Talking Donkey International
00:16 and our new television series, "Country Wisdom".
00:19 - Let's set the tone for this new series of ours.
00:22 It's found in Proverbs 4.
00:24 "Let your eyes look directly forward
00:27 and your gaze be straight before you.
00:30 Ponder the path of your feet
00:32 and then all your ways will be sure."
00:36 - Join us now for "Country Wisdom".
00:39 (gentle guitar music)
00:46 (intense dramatic music)
00:52 (helicopter rotors chuffing)
00:55 (protesters chanting)
01:02 (intense dramatic music) (protesters chanting)
01:08 Now here we are downtown.
01:09 Every city in America
01:10 is basically the same thing is happening.
01:12 The same thing is going on.
01:14 You know, this is not the country I grew up in.
01:16 It's probably not the country you grew up in.
01:19 The court system, nope.
01:21 It doesn't look like it once did.
01:23 The Constitution.
01:24 Eh, not many people are following the Constitution anymore.
01:27 We talk about it, but where's our rights to speech anymore?
01:32 You're watching that rapidly go away.
01:33 Pandemics!
01:34 Why, that's shut down the world overnight.
01:37 Things are not the way they once were.
01:39 You don't normally see these things happening everywhere
01:42 and things going on like this.
01:44 But let me tell you, things are changing.
01:46 My Bible says it's going to change.
01:48 My Bible says Jesus is coming soon.
01:51 How does he know that?
01:53 Well, he sees the end from the beginning
01:55 and he's told us time-after-time,
01:57 when you see these things come to pass,
02:00 know that it's just about to happen.
02:03 And I could spend a day with you at least
02:05 on a Bible study to show you
02:08 we are in the last moments of Earth's history.
02:10 These things are gonna continue to happen.
02:13 These events are going to get worse and worse and worse.
02:16 So today I wanna share with you an amazing story.
02:20 It's the story of Lot.
02:22 Let me read for you.
02:24 It's found in Luke 17:28.
02:43 listen to this now,
02:49 It's going to be just like in the days of Lot.
02:51 Well if you see Lot.
02:53 Abraham said Lot, "We're getting too big.
02:55 We're farmers out here, we're ranchers.
02:58 You pick a spot, you can have the high country,
03:00 or you can have the beautiful valley."
03:02 Well, he looked down at the cities and he wanted the city.
03:05 He loved the city life.
03:06 He loved all the, everything (car honking)
03:07 happening in the city.
03:08 You know, the malls and well,
03:09 you know, they didn't have malls,
03:10 but you know where I'm going with this.
03:13 All the quote, "good stuff."
03:15 Well he went down in that city and pretty soon
03:18 he was involved and his family were involved
03:20 in kind of all the vices and the sin and the garbage,
03:24 Lot tried to stay away from it,
03:26 but he really couldn't.
03:27 It kept getting to him.
03:29 And God says the same thing is going to happen to us.
03:32 All the cities, the good things of the cities,
03:34 they'll begin trapping us
03:36 and holding us tighter and tighter.
03:37 And when Jesus comes,
03:40 we have no opportunity to really look to him.
03:42 We have no opportunity to go with him.
03:46 The story we're about to show you today
03:47 took place 4,000 years ago,
03:50 but it's happening today all over.
03:53 You see, events of the Bible,
03:55 there's nothing new we know under the sun.
03:58 (tense dramatic music)
03:59 It's happening all over.
04:01 And my question to you is what are you going to do here?
04:03 As you watch this story,
04:05 put yourself in this story and think about it.
04:08 Choose what's going to happen in your life.
04:10 (tense dramatic music)
04:19 (phone buzzing)
04:21 - Ooh oh, Edith, Edith, Edith!
04:25 - Hello?
04:26 Yes, this is Edith Lot.
04:30 Candace, thank you so much for getting back to me.
04:34 I really, really want to be involved
04:37 in this project of yours.
04:39 Oh, a new youth center is going to make such a difference
04:43 in that whole neighborhood.
04:45 Now when is your next meeting?
04:48 Wednesday?
04:50 I'll be there.
04:51 Oh, no need to thank me.
04:54 Thank you for thinking of me.
04:57 All right. I'll see you Wednesday.
04:59 Bye bye.
05:00 - Edith, Edith!
05:02 - I'm sorry. I had to take that phone call.
05:03 - I have two really cool guys for dinner tonight.
05:07 - With you?
05:08 - Yes. Yes. They're right outside.
05:10 - For dinner?
05:10 - Yes. - Oh!
05:11 - Yes.
05:13 They have something important to talk to us about.
05:14 - Look, go give them the grand tour.
05:16 Show them around.
05:18 Show them the work that we're doing in the east garden.
05:20 - Okay.
05:21 - Oh, and take the landscaper's sketches with you.
05:24 - Ooh, ooh!
05:25 - Let them see how gorgeous it's going to be
05:27 when it's all finished. - Okay.
05:29 - I need to go and warn Consuela
05:31 that we have two extras for dinner.
05:33 - Ooh!
05:34 Just like you should have warned me.
05:36 - (sighs) ooh!
05:42 (radio speaking in Spanish)
05:43 - Consuela! (phone buzzing)
05:45 - Si?
05:46 - Oh, it's Aunt Sarah, again.
05:49 What am I gonna do?
05:52 I'm going to let it go to voicemail
05:54 the same way I did the last three times she called.
05:57 (phone buzzing)
05:58 Oh, just give me a minute.
06:01 - Senora?
06:02 - No, I'm fine, Consuela, fine.
06:04 Um, bien.
06:07 But could you turn that down or maybe even off?
06:11 I don't know how you can listen to the news all day long.
06:16 I never listen to the news.
06:18 I discovered a long time ago that life is easier
06:21 if you don't pay too close attention.
06:25 Although I suppose it's different
06:26 when you can't understand most of it.
06:29 Hm, probably easier.
06:30 (phone buzzing)
06:31 Oh, again!
06:33 (phone buzzing) Oh good.
06:35 Not Aunt Sarah this time.
06:38 Hello?
06:41 Shelby, honey, are you done with your meeting already?
06:45 Oh, Aunt Sarah called you.
06:49 I'm sorry, Shelby.
06:50 That's my fault.
06:52 I've been ignoring her calls all day.
06:57 Of course she's worried.
06:59 When has Aunt Sarah ever not been worried about us?
07:03 The Gospel, according to Aunt Sarah,
07:06 we're all too involved in things that don't matter.
07:09 We're too attached to our possessions.
07:12 None of us is as committed to the things of God
07:15 as we should be, and the sky is falling,
07:18 et cetera, et cetera.
07:22 Well, it might be a little harsh, but it's also true
07:25 and you know it.
07:27 You're too young to remember.
07:29 But when we decided to move from here from the ranch,
07:33 I thought she was going to have a stroke.
07:36 We tried to explain it was to take advantage
07:40 of a very lucrative business opportunity
07:44 and to keep your father
07:46 from having to drive into the city so often.
07:49 But you know Aunt Sarah, it was the big, bad city.
07:54 She was certain that we were all going to be corrupted.
07:59 Anyway, even Uncle Abraham called.
08:03 Oh, he's a sweetheart, but he did seem worried.
08:08 He wants us to come back at least for a while.
08:13 No, I mean like immediately.
08:17 I know they've always been worried about us,
08:20 but I don't know.
08:22 He just seemed more urgent this time.
08:28 Maybe I should call him back, talk to him a little bit more.
08:33 And your Aunt Sarah has been calling nonstop ever since.
08:40 Wanting to know if I've, "had a chance to think about it,"
08:43 as if I have had any time to think this morning.
08:48 I spent almost all morning on the phone
08:51 with your dad's secretary playing phone tag
08:55 because your dad never answers his cell phone,
08:58 trying to figure out if there's a time this winter
09:01 that we can all go skiing together.
09:03 I'm thinking Tahoe and the rest of the morning,
09:07 I spent online trying to track down a supplier
09:10 for those miniature orchids you want at your reception
09:14 and the diamond shaped truffles
09:16 that McKenzie wants at her bridal shower.
09:19 Tell me again, why you two
09:21 can't just make this a double wedding.
09:24 Oh, that's right.
09:27 Because you want to be
09:29 a romantic Saint Valentine's Day bride
09:36 and Mackenzie insists on being a traditional June bride.
09:39 Why can't you twins be a little more alike?
09:45 No, you know, I don't mind.
09:49 I waited long enough to have you too.
09:52 I think I can be forgiven for indulging you
09:54 just a little bit.
09:57 All right. Yes.
09:58 I know you need to get back to your meeting,
10:01 but listen, Shelby.
10:03 Don't worry about Aunt Sarah.
10:06 I'll call her.
10:08 I promise I'll call her.
10:10 We'll get this whole thing straightened out.
10:13 You know your Aunt Sarah, something is always going on.
10:17 Some crisis, always looming.
10:19 She has been predicting doom for this whole city
10:23 for at least as long as I've known her.
10:26 And so far, we all seem to be just fine.
10:31 I doubt today is going to be any different.
10:34 Anyway, I'll let you go.
10:35 Oh, but you are going to still come to dinner tonight?
10:39 Yes, I was hoping so.
10:41 Your father brought these two gentlemen home.
10:45 No, he didn't warn me.
10:46 I told you he never uses his cell phone.
10:50 Anyway, I don't know what they're here for,
10:52 but they look important and intense.
10:59 I think I'm gonna need both you girls here
11:00 to help me play hostess.
11:02 Be your usual sparkling selves.
11:05 Lighten the mood a little bit.
11:07 I don't want the whole evening to be so serious.
11:11 All right, I'll let you go.
11:14 Bye sweetie, hm.
11:17 (sighs) What I wouldn't give
11:20 for an extra yoga session before dinner.
11:24 Oh, dinner!
11:25 Consuela, that's why I came in here.
11:28 We have two guests for dinner.
11:31 Uh, dos mas for dinner.
11:33 - Dos.
11:34 - Yes. Yes. Thank you.
11:35 Oh. (phone buzzing)
11:36 Oh and now I'm buzzing again.
11:39 Hello?
11:42 Barb! How are you?
11:45 Oh, I'm fine.
11:47 Considering I'm planning two weddings.
11:51 Yes.
11:52 Shelby is getting married in February
11:55 and McKenzie in June.
11:58 I know it's ridiculous, isn't it?
12:01 Especially with everything else I have going on.
12:05 What do you mean that answers your question?
12:09 Another mission trip?
12:11 Barb, that's wonderful!
12:14 When?
12:16 Oh, Barb, there's just no way.
12:19 This will be the third time we've had to turn you down.
12:24 Every single time something has come up.
12:29 Now that first one, we were all set to go, remember?
12:33 We had no idea that girls' soccer team
12:36 was going to make regionals.
12:38 Oh, we hated backing out.
12:41 But we left it up to the girls
12:44 and you remember how crazy they were for soccer,
12:48 which is fine.
12:50 Nothing builds character like sports.
12:54 We just wished we could have done both.
12:58 Now that second trip, that was the one
13:01 to the orphanage in Guatemala, right?
13:05 I cannot remember why we had to cancel that one.
13:09 Oh, that's right.
13:12 My husband had just decided to run for city council.
13:16 Let me tell you, that consumed our lives for a while.
13:20 Oh, who am I kidding?
13:21 He won. It's still consuming our lives.
13:26 But you know, we both view it as kind of our mission.
13:33 You know, we've gotten to know some very important people.
13:38 I'd like to think we've gotten some good work done
13:42 and we've had a little bit of influence around here.
13:46 Oh, well, no.
13:47 It's nothing like your trips,
13:49 but then we really can't, can we?
13:52 Not in our circle.
13:54 You would not believe how careful you have to be nowadays
13:59 with anything religious.
14:01 But it just wouldn't do
14:02 to get labeled a conservative nutcase.
14:06 You'd have no influence left.
14:08 Anyway, we really do want to go some day, Barb.
14:13 I know.
14:14 I keep hearing that they just change your lives.
14:17 I've had more people tell me
14:19 that after their first mission trip,
14:22 their whole life was different.
14:25 Oh, are you suggesting our lives could use some changing?
14:30 I think we're doing just fine, thank you very much.
14:35 Well, I suppose we all have changes we could make,
14:41 but there'll be other times, right?
14:44 Right.
14:45 Anyway, you keep us on your list.
14:48 I want to know about the next one.
14:50 Seriously.
14:53 All right.
14:54 I'll talk to you later.
14:56 Bye.
14:59 (sighs)
15:01 Oh, a friend of mine.
15:04 Amiga.
15:07 I don't think she's very happy with me right now.
15:12 You know, I really wish we could commit to a mission trip,
15:18 but we're committed to so many other things right now.
15:22 Still I'd like to go on one.
15:25 At least, I think I would.
15:27 I would love to help build a church.
15:30 I think that would be amazing.
15:33 But I've heard on some of those trips,
15:36 they actually make you give talks,
15:40 go visit people, give Bible studies.
15:44 No, thank you.
15:48 I'm just not comfortable doing that.
15:52 I mean, I'm more comfortable entertaining than evangelizing.
15:56 Is that bad?
15:59 Is it bad to not to want to do something
16:02 unless you're comfortable doing it?
16:05 Oh, you don't even understand the question,
16:08 but it's probably bad.
16:11 I know what I'm going to do!
16:14 Oh, it's perfect.
16:15 I'm going to call Barb back
16:18 and tell her that I want to sponsor someone
16:21 to go on this trip.
16:24 I can't believe I didn't think of that
16:26 when I was on the phone with her.
16:27 I'm perfectly comfortable writing checks.
16:31 This way someone will get to go
16:34 who couldn't have gone otherwise
16:36 and I don't have to feel guilty anymore.
16:39 (phone buzzing)
16:40 Oh, I'm buzzing again.
16:43 Good. Paula!
16:46 Hey, what's up?
16:48 Oh, that's right. The seminar.
16:52 Yes. Yes. I remembered it.
16:54 Revitalizing Your Prayer Life.
16:57 I even got the companion book already.
17:01 No, I haven't read it yet, but it looks fascinating.
17:07 It is sitting right on my nightstand.
17:10 Here's the thing, Paula.
17:13 I'm not actually going to be able to go to the seminar.
17:18 No, no, no.
17:19 It has nothing to do with the drive.
17:21 It's just, that is the only day
17:24 that McKenzie and I could get in to see Chef Roland.
17:28 She wants him to cater her reception.
17:31 Oh, he has this marvelous French bistro.
17:35 You've got to go there sometime, Paula.
17:37 It's unbelievable.
17:39 It can take weeks to get a reservation.
17:42 That's how good it is.
17:44 But let me tell you, the goat cheese souffle
17:48 infused with fennel is worth the wait.
17:53 What?
17:55 I know.
17:57 I'm sorry to miss it too,
18:01 but this is really important to McKenzie.
18:04 She wants me there with her and well, family comes first.
18:10 You understand?
18:13 Look, Paula, I plan to read the book.
18:17 I promise.
18:19 And you said you were going to record the whole thing.
18:21 Right?
18:23 So I can watch it sometime when I'm not as busy.
18:27 All right. I'm always busy.
18:32 But after the weddings, it really should calm down.
18:35 I will make it a priority then.
18:41 Paula, I am interested in revitalizing my prayer life.
18:46 I know it's important.
18:48 I'm not canceling because I don't think it's important.
18:52 It's just that, well,
18:53 this time I've got to put McKenzie first.
18:58 I will.
19:00 I will. I promise.
19:03 And we really have to talk again.
19:05 But right now I've got company waiting.
19:09 Paula, I am taking it seriously
19:13 and I will spend some time thinking about it more.
19:17 I'll see what I can do.
19:20 All right, bye bye.
19:25 (sighs)
19:28 Paula's right.
19:31 I really do need to revitalize my prayer life.
19:35 Not that I would admit it to her.
19:38 The only reason I'm admitting it to you
19:40 is because you don't know what I'm saying.
19:45 I need to make it more of a priority.
19:49 Do you know what I'm going to do?
19:51 I am going to do just that.
19:53 I am going to start prioritizing my prayer life,
19:57 scheduling it in.
19:59 So other things don't come crowding in from every direction.
20:04 I'm actually going to put it in my calendar.
20:09 First thing, Monday morning,
20:12 I am taking an hour for prayer and study.
20:16 Oh no, I can't do Monday.
20:19 I have the Arts Council breakfast Monday morning
20:23 and then yoga studio.
20:27 And I think I've got a committee meeting in the afternoon.
20:29 So Tuesday.
20:31 Consuela, I am starting
20:34 to revitalize my prayer life Tuesday morning.
20:39 Let's see.
20:41 Nine to 10:00 am, right after my women's breakfast,
20:47 that business group I meet with.
20:50 That should give me enough time.
20:53 Nine to 10 Tuesday. It's all set.
20:56 - Si. (phone buzzing)
20:57 - Oh, buzzing again.
20:59 Hello?
21:01 Town and Country, really?
21:04 You want to do a feature on our house?
21:09 Oh, I would love to.
21:10 We'd be absolutely thrilled.
21:13 We are so happy with the renovation.
21:17 We worked very closely with Daniel Quint at Huntsman Group.
21:23 Yes. I knew you would have heard of him.
21:25 Oh, I can't tell you.
21:26 He completely transformed this house.
21:30 Now the landscaping isn't quite done,
21:34 but the interior is exquisite.
21:40 Yes, of course you can come do some preliminary photos.
21:44 When would work for you?
21:48 Nine o'clock Tuesday morning?
21:53 No, no, no. That works just fine.
21:56 Nothing that can't get put off.
21:59 I will see you nine o'clock Tuesday morning.
22:02 Oh, thank you again.
22:04 This is going to be so exciting.
22:07 All right. You too.
22:10 Consuela! That was Town and Country Magazine.
22:14 They want to do a cover of our house.
22:18 Oh, this is going to be so much fun.
22:21 You have no idea what a privilege this is.
22:24 What an honor.
22:25 You have no idea what any of this means,
22:28 but trust me, this is big.
22:31 (phone buzzing)
22:34 Hello?
22:37 Aunt Sarah, hi.
22:42 Really?
22:43 Oh, it must've been on silent.
22:45 You know, sometimes I forget to turn it off
22:48 or on or whatever.
22:51 Anyway.
22:53 Well, we haven't talked about it yet.
22:57 He just got home from work,
23:01 but we will.
23:02 Don't worry.
23:05 Yes, we will, Aunt Sarah.
23:09 I know.
23:11 Look, Aunt Sarah,
23:15 you and Uncle Abraham are really dear people.
23:19 And I know you're just concerned,
23:23 but you really don't have to worry that much.
23:26 We're fine.
23:32 Right.
23:35 No.
23:38 Aunt Sarah, what crisis?
23:41 As far as I can tell things are no different
23:43 than they ever have been.
23:45 And I told you, we are doing fine.
23:50 You worry too much.
23:55 Well, you've never trusted my judgment.
24:01 Yes.
24:03 Uh huh.
24:06 Yes, Aunt Sarah.
24:08 We will talk, I promise.
24:11 Now I really need to go.
24:12 We have people waiting for us.
24:16 Yes. We will call you later.
24:20 Bye.
24:22 Oh! (phone smacks)
24:25 Who does she think she is?
24:28 I am so tired of her self righteous.
24:34 If things were really as bad as Aunt Sarah thinks,
24:38 I think I would know it, wouldn't I?
24:42 But we're fine.
24:43 I told her we're fine.
24:46 She's wrong.
24:49 Ella esta mal.
24:52 I am not too materialistic.
24:58 "Too worried about and involved
25:00 with the things that don't matter."
25:04 I'm a good person.
25:07 Better than most.
25:10 I am on the boards of three different major charities
25:13 for Pete's sake.
25:15 I do lots of things for other people.
25:20 Yes, I like my house.
25:26 I helped design it.
25:29 I decorated it.
25:32 I like my life.
25:34 I helped build that too.
25:37 Can I not be proud of and enjoy something
25:41 that I helped make, but I am not too attached.
25:48 - Edith!
25:49 - I'll be right there.
25:56 I know that Sarah is wrong.
25:59 I do like my life.
26:02 I am comfortable.
26:05 I'm quite sure that if the time ever came,
26:11 if I really thought it was necessary,
26:15 I could walk away from everything.
26:19 Without a backward glance.
26:22 (mournful dramatic music)
26:34 - It's almost, well, it takes your breath away
26:36 to really watch and say, "Could that be me?"
26:41 But it's our choice.
26:41 We still have a choice.
26:43 They're long gone, but Jesus said he's coming back soon.
26:47 It's time now to make a decision.
26:50 But listen to what he says in Luke 21.
26:52 "And take heed to yourselves
26:54 lest at anytime your hearts be overcharged."
26:56 In other words, filled with all of the garbage
26:58 here on earth, with drunkenness and cares of this life.
27:01 Is your life filled with cares of this life?
27:04 He goes on to say that those are snares
27:06 to grab you and try and hold you down here.
27:10 "Watch therefore," here's the counsel from God.
27:12 "Watch therefore and pray always
27:15 that you may be accounted worthy
27:16 to escape all these things
27:18 that are going to come to pass
27:20 and stand before the Son of God."
27:23 That's our choice.
27:25 Are you going to look back
27:29 or are you going to look forward to Jesus Christ?
27:31 Choose you this, the Bible says.
27:35 - It's no secret that the world is in a major mess.
27:39 We are in a major mess.
27:42 Even if you have escaped, many of life's difficulties
27:45 most homes still struggle with daily living.
27:49 So the question arises
27:52 is there hope for the future for your future?
27:56 I want to tell you there absolutely is hope.
27:59 And that's why I'm asking you to order this free pamphlet.
