00:15 Hi, and welcome again to His Words are Life.
00:18 I'm Kelly Mowrer. We'll be reading today from
00:22 The King James Version, the book Acts. We're reading about the
00:26 the work of the disciples as they began to build and grow the
00:30 early church. Before we begin to read, let's pray together.
00:34 Dear Jesus, thank you for these stories of how your disciples
00:39 went out in faith and how they encouraged each other,
00:43 how they served each other. Help us to learn from that and to
00:48 be, like them, followers of You, the servants of each other.
00:52 Strengthen our faith. We love You. Amen.
00:56 We're reading today from the King James Version.
00:59 The book of Acts, chapter 13, and we'll begin with verse 24.
01:05 The people have come together and Paul is preaching to them
01:10 the history of Saul and David, and how they lived with the
01:14 man after God's own heart and through his line was born Jesus,
01:18 the Savior. And Paul continues, beginning verse 24.
01:22 When John had first preached before his coming the baptism
01:26 of repentance to all the people of Israel. And as John fulfilled
01:30 his course, he said, Whom think ye that I am? I am not he.
01:35 But, behold, there cometh one after me whose shoes of his feet
01:39 I am not worthy to loose. Men and brethren, children of the
01:44 stock of Abraham, and whosoever among you feareth God,
01:47 to you is the word of this salvation sent. For they that
01:53 dwell at Jerusalem, and their rulers, because they knew him
01:57 not, nor yet the voices of the prophets which are read every
02:00 Sabbath day, they have fulfilled them in condemning
02:05 him. And though they found no cause of death in him,
02:08 yet desired they Pilate that he should be slain.
02:12 And when they had fulfilled all that was written of him,
02:15 they took him down from the tree and laid him in a sepulcher
02:18 but God raised him from the dead: and he was seen many days
02:22 of them which came up with him from Galilee to Jerusalem,
02:26 who are his witnesses unto the people. And we declare unto you
02:30 glad tidings, how that the promise which was made
02:34 unto the fathers, God hath fulfilled the same unto us
02:37 their children, in that he hath raised up Jesus again;
02:42 as it is also written in the second psalm, Thou art my Son,
02:46 this day have I begotten thee. And as concerning that he raised
02:50 him up from the dead... now no more to return to corruption,
02:53 he said on this wise, I will give you the sure mercies
02:58 of David. Wherefore he saith also in another psalm,
03:02 Thou shalt not suffer thine Holy One to see corruption.
03:05 For David, after he had served his own generation by the will
03:09 of God, fell on sleep, and was laid unto his fathers,
03:13 and saw corruption: But he, whom God raised again,
03:18 saw no corrupti0on. Be it known unto you therefore, men and
03:22 brethren, that through this man is preached unto you
03:26 the forgiveness of sins. And by him all that believe
03:31 are justified from all things, from which ye could not be
03:35 justified by the law of Moses. Beware therefore, lest that come
03:41 upon you, which is spoken of in the prophets; Behold,
03:44 ye despisers, and wonder, and perish: for I work a work
03:50 in your days, a work which ye shall in no wise believe,
03:53 though a man declare it unto you. And when the Jews were
03:58 gone out of the synagogue, the Gentiles besought that these
04:01 words might be preached to them the next Sabbath.
04:04 Now when the congregation was broken up, many of the Jews
04:08 and religious proselytes followed Paul and Barnabas:
04:11 who speaking to them, persuaded them to continue in the grace
04:15 of God. And the next Sabbath day came almost the whole city
04:20 together to hear the word of God. But when the Jews saw the
04:24 multitudes, they were filled with envy, and spake against
04:28 those things which were spoken by Paul, contradicting
04:32 and blaspheming. Then Paul and Barnabas waxed bold, and said,
04:37 it was necessary that the word of God should first have been
04:41 spoken to you: but seeing ye put it from you and judge
04:45 yourselves unworthy of everlasting life, lo, we turn
04:50 to the Gentiles. For so hath the Lord commanded us, saying,
04:54 I have set thee to be a light of the Gentiles, that thou
04:59 shouldest be for salvation unto the ends of the earth.
05:02 And when the Gentiles heard this they were glad, and gloriified
05:06 the word of the Lord: and as many as were ordained to eternal
05:10 life believed. And the word of the Lord was published
05:15 throughout all the region. But the Jews stirred up the devout
05:18 and honorable women, and the chief men of the city,
05:21 and raised persecution against Paul and Barnabas, and expelled
05:24 them out of their coasts. But they shook off the dust of
05:28 their feet against them, and came unto Iconium.
05:30 And the disciples were filled with joy,
05:33 and with the Holy Ghost.
05:34 We're reading from the King James Version,
05:37 of the bible and we're in the book of Acts,
05:39 beginning chapter 14. And it came to pass
05:43 in Iconium, that they went both together into the synagogue
05:47 of the Jews and so spake, that a great multitude both of the
05:51 Jews and also of the Greeks believed.
05:54 But the unbelieving Jews stirred up the Gentiles,
05:57 and made their minds evil affected against the brethren.
06:02 Longtime therefore abode they speaking boldly in the Lord,
06:07 which gave testimony unto the word of his grace, and granted
06:11 signs and wonders to be done by their hands. But the multitude
06:15 of the city was divided: and part held with the Jews,
06:18 and part with the apostles. And when there was an assault made
06:22 both of the Gentiles, and also of the Jews with their rulers,
06:25 to use them despitefully, and to stone them, they were ware of it
06:31 and fled unto Lystra and Derbe, cities of Lycaonia, and unto the
06:36 region that lieth round about: And there they preached
06:39 the gospel. And there sat a certain man at Lystra,
06:43 impotent in his feet, being a cripple from his mother's womb,
06:47 who never had walked, the same heard Paul speak: who
06:52 steadfastly beholding him, and perceiving that he had faith to
06:56 be healed. said with a loud voice, Stand upright on thy
07:00 feet. And he leaped and walked. And when the people saw what
07:03 Paul had done, they lifted up their voices, saying in the
07:07 speech of Lycaonia, The gods are come down to us in the likeness
07:10 of men. And they called Barnabas Jupiter; and Paul, Mercurius,
07:16 because he was the chief speaker. Then the priest
07:20 of Jupiter, which was before their city, brought oxen and
07:24 garlands unto the gates, and would have done sacrifice
07:26 with the people. Which when the apostles, Barnabas and Paul,
07:30 heard of, they rent their clothes, and ran in among
07:34 the people, crying out, and saying, Sirs, why do ye these
07:37 things? We also are men of like passions with you, and preach
07:42 unto you that ye should turn from these vanities unto the
07:45 living God, which made heaven, and earth, and the sea, and all
07:48 things that are therein: who in times past suffered all nations
07:52 to walk in their own ways. Nevertheless he left not himself
07:56 without witness, in that he did good, and gave us rain from
08:00 heaven, and fruitful seasons, filling our hearts with food
08:04 and gladness. And with these sayings scarce restrained they
08:10 the people, that they had not done sacrifice unto them.
08:13 And there came thither certain Jews from Antioch and Iconium,
08:18 who persuaded the people, and having stoned Paul, drew him out
08:22 of the city, supposing he had been dead. Howbeit, as the
08:26 disciples stood round about him, he rose up, and came unto
08:30 the city: and the next day he departed with Barnabas to Derbe.
08:34 And when they had preached the gospel to that city,
08:38 and had taught many, they returned again to Lystra, and
08:41 to Iconium, and Antioch. Confirming the souls
08:45 of the disciples, and exhorting them to continue in the faith,
08:48 and that we must through much tribulation enter into the
08:53 kingdom of God. And when they had ordained them elders in
08:57 every church, and had prayed with fasting, they commended
09:01 them to the Lord, on whom they believed. And after they had
09:04 passed through Pisidia, they came to Pamphylia.
09:08 And when they had preached the word in Perga, they went down
09:11 into Attalia: And thence sailed to Antioch, from whence they had
09:15 been recommended to the grace of God for the work which they
09:19 fulfilled. And when they were come and had gathered the church
09:22 together, they rehearsed all that God had done with them,
09:26 and how he had opened the door of faith unto the Gentiles.
09:29 And there they abode long time with the disciples.
09:33 We're reading in the book of Acts, in the King James Version,
09:36 chapter 15. And certain men which came down
09:42 from Judea taught the brethren, and said,
09:44 Except ye be circumcised after the manner of Moses,
09:47 ye cannot be saved. When therefore Paul and Barnabas
09:51 had no small dissension and disputation with them,
09:54 they determined that Paul and Barnabas, and certain other
09:57 of them, should go up to Jerusalem unto the apostles
10:00 and elders about this question. And being brought on their way
10:04 by the church, they passed through Phenice and Samaria,
10:07 declaring the conversion of the Gentiles: and they caused great
10:11 joy unto all the brethren. And when they were come to Jerusalem
10:16 they were received of the church and of the apostles and elders,
10:19 and they declared all things that God had done with them.
10:23 But there rose up cretin of the sect of the Pharisees which
10:28 believed, saying, That it was needful to circumcise them,
10:32 and to command them to keep the law of Moses.
10:34 And the apostles and elders came together for to consider of this
10:38 matter. And when there had been much disputing, Peter rose up,
10:42 and said unto them, Men and brethren, ye know how that a
10:45 good while ago God made choice among us, that the Gentiles
10:50 by my mouth should hear the word of the gospel, and believe.
10:54 And God, which knoweth the hearts, bare them witness,
10:58 giving them the Holy Ghost, even as he did unto us;
11:03 And put no difference between us and them, purifying their
11:07 hearts by faith. Now therefore why tempt ye God, to put a yoke
11:14 upon the neck of the disciples, which neither our fathers nor we
11:18 were able to bear? But we believe that through the grace
11:22 of the Lord Jesus Christ we shall be saved even as they.
11:26 Then all the multitude kept silence, and gave audience to
11:31 Barnabas and Paul, declaring what miracles and wonders
11:34 God had wrought among the Gentiles by them.
11:38 And after they had held their peace, James answered, saying,
11:43 men and brethren, hearken unto me: Simeon hath declared how God
11:48 at the first did visit the Gentiles, to take out of them
11:51 a people for his name. And to this agree the words of the
11:54 prophets; as it is written, After this I will return,
11:58 and will build again the tabernacle of David,
12:01 which is fallen down; and I will build again the ruins thereof,
12:03 the ruins thereof and I will set it up:
12:05 That the residue of men might seek after the Lord,
12:09 and all the Gentiles upon whom my name is called,
12:12 saith the Lord, who doeth all these things. Known unto God
12:16 are all his works from the beginning of the world.
12:19 Wherefore my sentence is, that we trouble not them,
12:24 which among the Gentiles are turned to God: But that we write
12:28 unto them, that they abstain from pollutions of idols,
12:32 and from fornication, and from things strangled, and from blood
12:35 For Moses of old time hath in every city them that preach him,
12:40 being read in the synagogues every Sabbath day.
12:44 Then pleased it the apostles and elders,
12:47 with the whole church, to send chosen men of their own company
12:51 to Antioch with Paul and Barnabas; namely, Judas,
12:55 surnamed Barsabas, and Silas, chief men among the brethren:
12:59 And they wrote letters by them after this manner;
13:03 The apostles and elders and brethren send greeting unto
13:08 the brethren which are of the Gentiles in Antioch and Syria
13:11 and Cilicia: Forasmuch as we have heard that certain
13:15 which went out from us have troubled you with words,
13:20 subverting your souls, saying, Ye must be circumcised,
13:24 and keep the law: to whom we gave no such commandment:
13:27 It seemed good unto us, being assembled with one accord,
13:31 to send chosen men unto you with our beloved Barnabas and Paul,
13:35 Men that have hazarded their lives for the name of our Lord
13:39 Jesus Christ. We have sent therefore Judas and Silas,
13:43 who shall also tell you the same things by mouth. For it seemed
13:47 good to the Holy Ghost, and to us, to lay upon you no greater
13:51 burden than these necessary things; that ye abstain from
13:55 meats offered to idols, and from blood, and from things
13:58 strangled and from fornication from which if ye keep yourselves
14:02 ye shall do well. Fare ye well. So when they were dismissed,
14:08 they came to Antioch and when they had gathered the multitude
14:11 together, they delivered the epistle; which when they had
14:14 read, they rejoiced for the consolation. And Judas and Silas
14:19 being prophets also themselves, exhorted the brethren with many
14:23 words and confirmed them. And after they had tarried there
14:27 a space, they were let go in peace from the brethren
14:31 unto the apostles. Goodbye.
