00:16 Hello, and Welcome back to His Words are Life.
00:19 I'm Kelly Mowrer and today we're going to continue reading 00:22 in the book of James. But before we read, let's pray together. 00:25 Dear God, Thank you so much for this time to come apart 00:30 from all the different things that are requiring our attention 00:34 today. But before we turn to those things we're coming into 00:37 your presence to receive from you instruction as to how we 00:42 should face those things. We want to have our faith 00:46 strengthened. We want to have our lives become more and more 00:50 like yours. Our faith and our works combining to show 00:54 whose we are. Please guide us now as we read these words. 00:58 May they take root and bear fruit to your glory. 01:01 We love you. Amen. 01:02 Like I said, we're reading in the book of James. 01:05 James has been writing about the relationship, 01:09 - beautiful relationship, the interwoven relationship, 01:12 between faith and works; how we can't say that we have 01:16 faith but live a life that is apart from God. 01:19 But through the very things that we do, we show others who 01:24 is our king, who is our Lord and in whom we have placed our faith 01:28 We're picking up in chapter 4, verse 6. 01:34 Wherefore he saith, God resisteth the proud, 01:37 but giveth grace unto the humble. 01:40 Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, 01:46 and he will flee from you. Draw nigh to God, and he will draw 01:51 nigh to you. Cleanse your hands, ye sinners; and purify your 01:56 hearts, ye double-minded. Be afflicted, and mourn, and weep: 02:00 let your laughter be turned to mourning, and your joy 02:04 to heaviness. Humble yourselves in the sight of the Lord, 02:08 and he shall lift you up. Speak not evil one of another, 02:13 brethren. He that speaketh evil of his brother, and judgeth 02:18 his brother, speaketh evil of the law, and judgeth the law: 02:22 but if thou judge the law, thou art not a doer of the law, 02:26 but a judge. There is one lawgiver, who is able to save 02:30 and to destroy: who art thou that judgest another? 02:35 Go to now, ye that say, Today or tomorrow we will go into 02:40 such a city, and continue there a year, and buy and sell, 02:43 and get gain: Whereas ye know not what shall be on the morrow. 02:48 For what is your life? It is even a vapor, that appeareth 02:53 for a little time, and then vanisheth away. 02:55 For that ye ought to say, If the Lord will, we shall live, 03:01 and do this, or that. But now ye rejoice in your boastings: 03:06 all such rejoicing is evil. Therefore to him that knoweth 03:11 to do good, and doeth it not, to him it is sin. 03:16 Reading, continuing in chapter five of James 03:21 This is the King James Version. Go to now, ye rich men, 03:25 weep and howl for your miseries that shall come upon you. 03:29 Your riches are corrupted, and your garments are motheaten. 03:33 Your gold and silver is cankered and the rust of them shall be 03:37 a witness against you, and shall eat your flesh as it were 03:40 fire. Ye have heaped treasure together for the last days. 03:44 Behold, the hire of the laborers who have reaped down your fields 03:50 which is of you kept back by fraud, crieth: and the cries 03:56 of them which have reaped are entered into the ears of the 03:59 Lord of sabaoth. Ye have lived in pleasure on the earth, 04:02 and been wanton; ye have nourished your hearts, 04:05 as in a day of slaughter. Ye have condemned and killed 04:09 the just; and he doth not resist you. Be patient therefore, 04:14 brethren, unto the coming of the Lord. Behold, the husbandman 04:19 waiteth for the precious fruit of the earth, and hath long 04:22 patience for it, until he receive the early and latter 04:27 rain. Be ye also patient; stablish your hearts: 04:31 for the coming of the Lord draweth nigh. 04:34 Grudge not one against another, brethren, lest ye be condemned: 04:39 behold, the judge standeth before the door. 04:43 Take, my brethren, the prophets who have spoken in the name of 04:47 the Lord, for an example of suffering affliction, 04:49 and of patience. Behold, we count them happy which endure. 04:55 Ye have heard of the patience of Job, and have seen the end 04:59 of the Lord; that the Lord is very pitiful, and of tender 05:02 mercy. But above all things, my brethren, swear not, neither by 05:08 heaven, neither by the earth, neither by any other oath: 05:11 but let your yea be yea; and your nay, nay; lest ye fall 05:19 into condemnation. Is any among you afflicted? let him pray. 05:24 Is any merry? let him sing psalms. Is any sick among you? 05:31 let him call for the elders of the church; and let them pray 05:34 over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord: 05:37 and the prayer of faith shall save the sick, and the Lord 05:43 shall raise him up; and if he have committed sins, 05:46 they shall be forgiven him. Confess your faults one to 05:51 another, and pray one for another, that ye may be healed. 05:56 The effectual, fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth much. 06:03 Elias was a man subject to like passions as we are, and he 06:09 prayed earnestly that it might not rain: and it rained not 06:13 on the earth by the space of three years and six months. 06:16 And he prayed again, and the heaven gave rain, and the earth 06:21 brought forth her fruit. Brethren, if any of you do err 06:26 from the truth, and one convert him; let him know, that he which 06:32 converteth the sinner from the error of his way, shall save a 06:36 soul from death, and shall hide a multitude of sins. 06:40 Continuing to read now the first epistle of Peter, 06:45 chapter one. This is the King James Version. 06:48 Peter, an apostle of Jesus Christ, to the strangers 06:52 scattered throughout Pontus, Galatia, Cappadocia, Asia, and 06:58 Bithynia, elect according to the foreknowledge of God 07:02 the Father, through sanctification of the Spirit, 07:04 unto obedience and sprinkling of the blood of Jesus Christ: 07:08 Grace unto you, and peace, be multiplied. Blessed be the God 07:13 and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, which according to his 07:17 abundant mercy hath begotten us again unto a lively hope 07:21 by the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead. 07:24 To an inheritance incorruptible and undefiled, and that fadeth 07:29 not away, reserved in heaven for you, who are kept by the power 07:34 of God through faith unto salvation ready to be revealed 07:39 in the last time. Wherein ye greatly rejoice, though now 07:44 for a season, if need be, ye are in heaviness through 07:49 manifold temptations: That the trial of your faith, being much 07:54 more precious than of gold that perisheth, though it be tried 07:58 with fire, might be found unto praise and honor and glory 08:03 at the appearing of Jesus Christ: Whom having not seen 08:08 ye love; in whom, though now ye see him not, yet believing, 08:14 ye rejoice with joy unspeakable and full of glory: Receiving the 08:20 end of your faith, even the salvation of your souls. 08:23 Of which salvation the prophets have inquired and searched 08:28 diligently, who prophesied of the grace that should come 08:31 unto you: Searching what, or what manner of time the Spirit 08:36 of Christ which was in them did signify when it testified 08:40 beforehand the sufferings of Christ, and the glory that 08:43 should follow. Unto whom it was revealed, that not unto 08:47 themselves, but unto us they did minister the things, which are 08:51 now reported unto you by them that have preached the gospel 08:55 unto you with the Holy Ghost sent down from heaven; which 08:59 things the angels desire to look into. Wherefore gird up 09:04 the loins of your mind, be sober, and hope to the end 09:09 for the grace that is to be brought unto you at the 09:12 revelation of Jesus Christ; as obedient children not fashioning 09:17 yourselves according to the former lusts in your ignorance: 09:20 But as he which hath called you is holy, so be ye holy 09:26 in all manner of conversation; because it is written, 09:29 Be ye holy; for I am holy. And if ye call on the Father, 09:35 who without respect of persons judgeth according to every man's 09:40 pass the time of your sojourning her in fear: Forasmuch as ye 09:46 know that ye were not redeemed with corruptible things, 09:49 as silver and gold, from your vain conversation received by 09:54 tradition from your fathers; But with the precious blood 09:58 of Christ, as of a lamb without blemish and without spot: 10:02 Who verily was foreordained before the foundation of the 10:06 world, but was manifest in these last times for you, 10:10 who by him do believe in God, that raised him up from the dead 10:16 and gave him glory; that your faith and hope might be in God. 10:21 Seeing ye have purified your souls in obeying the truth 10:25 through the Spirit unto unfeigned love of the brethren, 10:29 see that ye love one another with a pure heart fervently: 10:35 Being born again, not of corruptible seed, but of 10:39 incorruptible, by the word of God, which liveth and abideth 10:43 for ever. For all flesh is as grass, and all the glory of man 10:49 as the flower of grass. The grass withereth, and the flower 10:54 thereof falleth away: But the word of the Lord endureth 10:58 for ever. And this is the word which by the gospel is preached 11:04 unto you. Continuing now in Peter, 11:07 chapter 2. - Wherefore laying aside all malice, and all guile, 11:14 and hypocrisies, and envies, and all evil speaking, 11:18 as newborn babes, desire the sincere milk of the word, 11:23 that ye may grow thereby: If so be ye have tasted that the Lord 11:29 is gracious. To whom coming, as unto a living stone, 11:35 disallowed indeed of men, but chosen of God, and precious, 11:40 ye also, as lively stones, are built up a spiritual house, 11:46 an holy priesthood, to offer up spiritual sacrifices, 11:50 acceptable to God by Jesus Christ. Wherefore also it is 11:56 contained in the scripture, Behold, I lay in Sion 11:59 a chief corner stone, elect, precious: and he that believeth 12:05 on him shall not be confounded. Unto you therefore which believe 12:10 he is precious: but unto them which be disobedient, the stone 12:15 which the builders disallowed, the same is made the head of the 12:18 corner, and a stone of stumbling and a rock of offence, 12:23 even to them which stumble at the word, being disobedient: 12:26 whereunto also they were appointed. But ye are a chosen 12:31 generation, a royal priesthood, an holy nation, a peculiar 12:35 people; that ye should shew forth the praises of him, 12:39 who hath called you out of darkness into his marvellous 12:43 light: Which in time past were not a people, but are now 12:48 the people of God: which had not obtained mercy, but now have 12:54 obtained mercy. Dearly beloved, I beseech you as strangers 13:00 and pilgrims, abstain from fleshly lusts, which war against 13:04 the soul; having your conversation honest 13:08 among the Gentiles: that, whereas they speak against you 13:12 as evildoers, they may by your good works, which they shall 13:17 behold, glorify God in the day of visitation. 13:20 Submit yourselves to every ordinance of man for the 13:24 Lord's sake: whether it be to the king, as supreme; 13:28 or unto governors, as unto them that are sent by him for the 13:32 punishment of evildoers, and for the praise of them that 13:35 do well. For so is the will of God, that with well-doing 13:40 ye may put to silence the ignorance of foolish men: 13:44 As free, and not using your liberty for a cloak 13:49 of maliciousness, but as the servants of God. 13:52 Honor all men. Love the brotherhood. Fear God. 13:58 Honor the king. Servants, be subject to your masters 14:03 with all fear; not only to the good and gentle, but also to 14:07 the froward. For this is thankworthy, if a man 14:11 for conscience toward God endure grief, suffering 14:14 wrongfully. For what glory is it, if, when ye be buffeted 14:19 for your faults, ye shall take it patiently? but if, when ye do 14:23 and suffer for it, ye take it patiently, this is acceptable 14:28 with God. - Thank you for joining with me today 14:31 May God keep you until we're together again. |
