00:17 Hi, I'm Kelly Mowrer and welcome back to His Words are Life.
00:20 Before we read, Let's pray today. Dear God, please be with 00:25 us as we read the stories of Genesis together 00:30 and some of them are more difficult to understand 00:33 than others. But you've preserved them here in 00:36 in your book for instructing us and for teaching us something 00:40 that you want us to know. So please send your Holy Spirit 00:43 to be with our minds and our hearts as we read today, 00:46 and to guide us into truth. We love you so much 00:49 and thank you for loving us. Amen. 00:51 We're going to be reading today one of my favorite stories 00:55 in the bible, which is the story of Joseph and how as Joseph 00:59 sought to do the right thing, he found himself constantly 01:03 facing new trials. But at the every setback there is a phrase 01:07 in the story that says, And the Lord was with Joseph. 01:10 And I've often found comfort in that myself when things don't 01:14 seem to be making sense, the Lord is still with us. 01:16 But before we go on to the story of Joseph we're 01:19 in the middle of where we left off of last time of the story 01:22 of Judah and his sons. He had three sons. The oldest married 01:27 a woman named Tamar and died without leaving her children, 01:31 the second one went in to give her children, but fixed it so 01:35 that he didn't; but God was displeased with that so he died 01:38 as well. But Judah said to Tamar, you know, Go be with 01:42 your father until my other son is old enough. But when his old, 01:45 his younger son grew to be old enough to provide a child 01:49 of Tamar, he didn't - Judah didn't see that happened. 01:53 So Tamar, hearing that Judah was visiting in the town near by 01:57 decided to take it upon herself to get children, she put off her 02:02 mourning clothes and covered her face with a veil and went 02:05 and sat where Judah would see her. And because her face was 02:08 covered with a veil, Judah took her for a prostitute. 02:11 So now, we're picking up the story in Genesis, chapter 38, 02:15 This is the King James Version. And we're starting with verse 16 02:19 And he, Judah, turned unto her by the way, and said, Go to, 02:27 I pray thee, let me come in unto thee; for he knew not that she 02:31 was his daughter in law. And she said, What wilt thou give me 02:35 that thou mayest come in unto me? And he said, I will send 02:39 thee a kid from the flock. And she said, Wilt thou give me a 02:42 pledge, till thou send it? And he said, What pledge shall I 02:46 give thee? And she said, Thy signet, and thy bracelets, 02:50 and thy staff that is in thine hand. And he gave it her, 02:54 and came in unto her, and she conceived by him. 02:58 And she arose, and went away, and laid by her veil from her, 03:02 and put on the garments of her widowhood. 03:04 And Judah sent the kid by the hand of his friend the Adulamite 03:09 to receive his pledge from the woman's hand; but he found her 03:12 not. Then he asked the men of that place, saying, Where is the 03:17 harlot, that was openly by the wayside? And they said, 03:20 There was no harlot in this place. And he returned to 03:23 Judah, and said, I cannot find her; and also the men of the 03:27 place said that there was no harlot in this place. 03:29 And Judah said, Let her take it to her, lest we be shamed: 03:33 behold, I sent his kid, and thou hast not found her. 03:36 And it came to pass about three months after, that it was told 03:40 Judah, saying, Tamar thy daughter in law 03:43 has played the harlot; and also, behold, she is with child by 03:47 whoredom. And Judah said, Bring her forth, and let her be burnt. 03:51 When she was brought forth, she sent to her father in law 03:55 saying, By the man, whose these are, am I with child: 04:00 And she said, Discern, I pray thee, whose are these, 04:05 the signet, and bracelets, and staff. And Judah acknowledged 04:10 them, and said, She hath been more righteous than I; 04:14 because that I gave her not to Shelah my son. And he knew 04:19 her again no more. And it came to pass in the time of her 04:21 travail, that, behold, twins were in her womb. 04:25 And it came to pass, when she travailed, that the one put out 04:29 his hand: and the midwife took and bound upon his hand 04:33 a scarlet thread, saying, This came out first. And it came to 04:38 pass, as he drew back his hand, that behold his brother came out 04:41 and she said, How hast thou broken forth? this breach 04:45 be upon thee: therefore his name was called Pharez. 04:48 And afterward came out his brother, that had the scarlet 04:52 thread upon his hand: and his name was called Zerah. 04:56 We're continuing now in Genesis, chapter 39, 04:59 And this is the King James Version. 05:01 And Joseph was brought down to Egypt; and Potiphar, and officer 05:06 of Pharaoh, captain of the guard, and Egyptian, 05:09 bought him of the hands of the Ishmaelites, which had brought 05:13 him down thither. And the Lord was with Joseph, 05:17 and he was a prosperous man; and he was in the house of his 05:21 master the Egyptian. And his master saw that the Lord 05:25 was with him, and that the Lord made all that he did to prosper 05:28 in his hand. And Joseph found grace in his sight, 05:32 and he served him: and he made him overseer over his 05:37 house, and all that he had he put into his hand. 05:39 And it came to pass from the time that he had made him 05:44 overseer in his house, and over all that he had, that the Lord 05:47 blessed the Egyptian's house for Joseph's sake; and the blessing 05:51 of the Lord was upon all that he had in the house, 05:54 and in the field. And he left all that he had in Joseph's hand 05:58 and he knew not aught he had, save the bread which he did eat. 06:01 And Joseph was a goodly person, and well favoured. 06:04 And it came to pass after these things, that his master's wife 06:09 cast her eyes upon Joseph; and she said, Lie with me. 06:12 But he refused, and said unto his master's wife, Behold, 06:16 my master wotteth not what is with me in the house, and he 06:19 hath committed all that he hath to my hand: There is none 06:22 greater in this house than I; neither hath he kept back 06:25 anything from me but thee, because thou art his wife: 06:28 how then can I do this great wickedness, and sin against God? 06:34 And it came to pass, as she spake to Joseph day by day, 06:40 that he hearkened not unto her, to lie by her or to be with her. 06:44 And it came to pass about this time, that Joseph went into the 06:48 house to do his business; and there was none of the men of 06:50 the house there within. And she caught him by his garment, 06:54 saying, Lie with me: and he left his garment in her hand, 06:58 and fled, and got him out. And it came to pass, when she saw 07:04 that he had left his garment in her hand, and was fled forth 07:06 that she called unto the men of her house, and spake unto 07:10 them, saying, See, he hath brought in an Hebrew unto us 07:13 to mock us; he came in unto me to lie with me, and I cried 07:16 with a loud voice: And it came to pass, when he heard that I 07:19 lifted up my voice and cried, that he left his garment with me 07:22 and fled, and got him out. And she laid up his garment by her, 07:26 until his lord came home. And she spake unto him, according 07:30 to these words, saying, The Hebrew servant, which thou 07:33 hast brought unto us, came in unto me to mock me: And it came 07:37 to pass as I lifted up my voice and cried, that he left his 07:40 garment with me, and fled out. And it came to pass, when his 07:44 master heard the words of his wife, which she spake unto him, 07:47 saying, After this manner did thy servant to me; 07:51 that his wrath was kindled. And Joseph's master took him, 07:56 and put him into the prison, a place where the king's 07:59 prisoners were bound: and he was there in the prison. 08:03 But the Lord was with Joseph, and shewed him mercy, 08:07 and gave him favour in the sight of the keeper of the prison. 08:11 And the keeper of the prison committed to Joseph's hand 08:14 all the prisoners that were in the prison; and whatsoever they 08:18 did there, he was the doer of it. The keeper of the prison 08:22 looked not to any thing that was under his hand: because 08:24 the Lord was with him, and that which he did, the Lord made it 08:28 to prosper. Continuing to read how the Lord was with Joseph. 08:33 Chapter 40, in the book of Genesis, 08:35 and this is the King James Version. 08:36 And it came to pass after these things, that the butler of the 08:41 king of Egypt and his baker had offended their lord the king of 08:45 Egypt. And Pharaoh was wroth against two of his officers, 08:48 against the chief of the butlers, and against the 08:50 chief of the bakers. And he put them in ward in the house of the 08:54 captain of the guard, into the prison, the place where Joseph 08:57 was bound. And the captain of the guard charged Joseph with 09:01 them: and he served him and they continued a season in the ward. 09:04 And they dreamed a dream, both of them, each man his dream 09:09 in one night, each man according to the interpretation 09:12 of his dream, the butler and the baker of the king of Egypt, 09:15 which were bound in the prison. And Joseph came in unto them 09:20 in the morning, and looked upon them and, behold, they were sad. 09:22 And he asked Pharaoh's officers that were with him in the ward 09:26 of his lord's house, saying, Wherefore look ye so sadly, 09:30 today? And they said unto him, We have dreamed a dream, 09:33 and there is no interpreter of it. And Joseph said unto them, 09:37 Do not interpretations belong to God? tell me them, I pray you. 09:42 And the chief butler told his dream to Joseph, and said to him 09:46 In my dream, behold a vine was before me; And in the vine were 09:51 three branches: and it was as though it budded, and her 09:54 blossoms shot forth; and the clusters thereof brought forth 09:57 ripe grapes: And Pharaoh's cup was in my hand: and I took the 10:01 grapes, and pressed them into Pharaoh's cup, and I gave 10:03 the cup into Pharaoh's hand. And Joseph said unto him, 10:08 This is the interpretation of it: The three branches are 10:12 three days: Yet within three days shall Pharaoh lift up thine 10:16 head, and restore thee unto thy place: and thou shalt deliver 10:19 Pharaoh's cup into his hand, after the former manner 10:22 when thou wast his butler. But think on me when it shall be 10:27 well with thee, and shew kindness, I pray thee, unto me, 10:30 and make mention of me unto Pharaoh, and bring me out of 10:33 this house: for indeed I was stolen away out of the land 10:37 of the Hebrews: and here also have I done nothing that they 10:41 should put me into the dungeon. 10:42 When the chief baker saw that the interpretation was good, 10:47 he said unto Joseph, I also was in my dream, and, behold, 10:50 I had three white baskets on my head: And in the uppermost 10:54 basket there was of all manner of bakemeats for Pharaoh; 10:58 and the birds did eat them out of the basket upon my head. 11:01 And Joseph answered and said, This is the interpretation 11:05 thereof: The three baskets are three days: Yet within three 11:09 days shall Pharaoh lift up thy head from off thee, 11:12 and shall hang thee on a tree; and the birds shall eat thy 11:16 flesh from off thee. And it came to pass the third day, 11:20 which was Pharaoh's birthday, that he made a feast unto all 11:24 his servants: and he lifted up the head of the chief butler and 11:27 the chief baker among his servants. And he restored 11:31 the chief butler unto his butlership again; 11:33 and he gave the cup into Pharaoh's hand: 11:36 But he hanged the chief baker as Joseph had interpreted to them. 11:41 Yet did not the chief butler remember Joseph, but forgat him. 11:46 Genesis, chapter 41. This is The King James Version. 11:50 And it came to pass at the end of two full years, that Pharaoh 11:56 dreamed: and, behold, he stood by the river. And, behold, there 11:59 came up out of the river seven well favored kine and fatfleshed 12:05 and they fed in a meadow. And, behold, seven other kine came 12:10 up after them out of the river, ill favored and leanfleshed: 12:14 and stood by the other kine upon the brink of the river. 12:17 And the ill favored and lean fleshed kine did eat up the 12:21 seven well favored and fat kine. So Pharaoh awoke. And he slept 12:27 and dreamed the second time: and behold, seven ears of corn came 12:31 up upon one stalk, rank and good. And, behold, seven thin 12:37 ears and blasted with the east wind sprung up after them. 12:41 And the seven thin ears devoured the seven rank and full ears. 12:46 And Pharaoh awoke, and, behold, it was a dream. 12:50 And it came to pass in the morning that his spirit was 12:54 troubled: and he sent and called for all the magicians of Egypt, 12:58 and all the wise men thereof: and Pharaoh told them his dream; 13:01 but there was none that could interpret them unto Pharaoh. 13:04 Then spake the chief butler unto Pharaoh, saying, I do remember 13:11 my faults this day: Pharaoh was wroth with his servants, and 13:15 put me in a ward in the captain of the guard's house, both me 13:18 and the chief baker: And we dreamed a dream in one night, 13:21 I and he; we dreamed each man according to the interpretation 13:25 of his dream. And there was there with us a young man, 13:28 a Hebrew, servant to the captain of the guard; and we told him, 13:32 and he interpreted to us our dreams; to each man according 13:37 to his dream he did interpret. And it came to pass, as he 13:41 interpreted to us, so it was; me he restored unto mine office, 13:46 and him he hanged. Then Pharaoh sent and called Joseph, 13:51 and they brought him hastily out of the dungeon: and he shaved 13:55 himself and changed his raiment, and came in unto Pharaoh. 13:59 And Pharaoh said unto Joseph, I have dreamed a dream, 14:03 and there is none that can interpret it: and I have heard 14:05 say of thee, that thou canst understand a dream to interpret 14:09 it. And Joseph answered Pharaoh, saying, It is not in me: 14:15 God shall give Pharaoh an answer of peace. And Pharaoh said unto 14:21 Joseph, In my dream, behold, I stood upon the bank of the river 14:25 We'll continue with the dream next time. But until we're 14:28 together again, may God bless you and keep you in His peace. 14:31 Thank you for joining me. Goodbye. |
