00:17 Hi and welcome to His Words Are Life.
00:19 I'm Kelly Mowrer, and thank you 00:21 for joining with me today 00:22 to read the Word of God. 00:23 Before we read together, let's pray. 00:26 Dear Jesus, thank you so much that once again we can come 00:30 and sit with you and read your words to us. 00:33 Thank you that you have told us the way to all truth 00:36 lies in your words and that we now have the opportunity to... 00:40 to hear them and to know you better. 00:43 Please be with us as we read. Help us to understand 00:46 and beyond understanding help us to put into practice 00:50 the lessons that you want us to learn today. 00:52 We love you so much and thank you for loving us. 00:55 Amen. 00:56 When we were last together we were reading about Moses 00:59 and the Israelites in the wilderness. 01:02 And his father-in-law comes to visit him: Jethro. 01:04 He's heard all of the miracles and all of the ways that God has 01:07 blessed Moses and freed the Israelites from the Egyptians. 01:11 And so Jethro comes to him, and Moses is glad to see him 01:14 and they talk together. And then Jethro watches as Moses 01:17 is judging the Israelites that line up and bring to Moses 01:21 all of their problems throughout the day. 01:24 And at the end of the day Jethro says to Moses: 01:26 Why are you doing this? This isn't a good thing 01:28 you are doing. And it struck me as we were reading this that 01:32 rather than get sort of indignant or offended in any way 01:35 and say something like "Well, God's just used me to 01:39 free the Israelites and you dare to say that what I'm doing 01:41 is the wrong thing? " Instead, Moses is humble, 01:44 and he listens to the counsel of his father-in-law. 01:47 And he goes ahead and appoints the different judges to handle 01:50 the smaller matters and conserve his strength. 01:52 And I thought what a lesson in humility and in wisdom 01:56 Moses gives to each of us by that example. 01:59 And now we're continuing to read in Exodus. 02:01 This is chapter 19, and we are starting with verse 10. 02:06 The Israelites have just told God through Moses 02:09 that they are going to do everything that the Lord 02:11 has told them to do. Picking up in verse 10... 02:14 And the Lord said unto Moses, Go unto the people, 02:17 and sanctify them today and tomorrow, 02:19 and let them wash their clothes. 02:21 And be ready against the third day: for the third day the Lord 02:25 will come down in the sight of all the people upon mount Sinai. 02:29 And thou shalt set bounds unto the people round about, saying, 02:33 Take heed to yourselves, that you go not up into the mount, 02:37 or touch the border of it: whosoever toucheth the mount 02:40 shall be surely put to death: 02:43 There shall not a hand touch it, but he shall surely be stoned, 02:47 or shot through; whether it be beast or man, it shall not live: 02:51 when the trumpet soundeth long, they shall come up to the mount. 02:56 And Moses went down from the mount unto the people, 02:59 and sanctified the people; and they washed their clothes. 03:01 And he said unto the people, Be ready against the third day: 03:06 come not at your wives. 03:08 And it came to pass on the third day in the morning, 03:11 that there were thunders and lightnings, and a thick cloud 03:15 upon the mount, and the voice of the trumpet exceeding loud: 03:19 so that all the people that was in the camp trembled. 03:22 And Moses brought forth the people out of the camp 03:25 to meet with God; and they stood at the nether part of the mount. 03:30 And mount Sinai was altogether on a smoke, 03:33 because the Lord descended upon it in fire: 03:36 and the smoke thereof ascended as the smoke of a furnace, 03:39 and the whole mount quaked greatly. 03:41 And when the voice of the trumpet sounded long, 03:44 and waxed louder and louder, Moses spake, 03:47 and God answered him by a voice. 03:50 And the Lord came down upon mount Sinai, 03:52 on the top of the mount: and the Lord called Moses up 03:56 to the top of the mount; and Moses went up. 03:58 And the Lord said unto Moses, Go down, charge the people, 04:02 lest they break through unto the Lord to gaze, 04:05 and many of them perish. 04:06 And let the priests also, which come near to the Lord, 04:09 sanctify themselves, lest the Lord break forth upon them. 04:13 And Moses said unto the Lord, The people cannot come up 04:16 to mount Sinai: for Thou chargedst us, saying, 04:18 Set bounds about the mount, and sanctify it. 04:21 And the Lord said unto him, Away, get thee down, 04:24 and thou shalt come up, thou, and Aaron with thee: 04:26 but let not the priests and the people break through to come up 04:30 unto the Lord, lest He break forth upon them. 04:32 So Moses went down unto the people, and spake unto them. 04:36 We are reading in the book of Exodus, chapter 20, and this is 04:40 the King James version. 04:42 And God spake all these words, saying, 04:45 I am the Lord thy God, 04:47 which have brought thee out of the land of Egypt, 04:50 out of the house of bondage. 04:52 Thou shalt have no other gods before Me. 04:55 Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image, 04:58 or any likeness of anything that is in heaven above, 05:02 or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water 05:04 under the earth: thou shalt not bow down thyself to them, 05:07 nor serve them: for I the Lord thy God am a jealous God, 05:12 visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children 05:15 unto the third and fourth generation of them that hate Me; 05:18 and showing mercy unto thousands of them that love Me, 05:22 and keep My commandments. 05:24 Thou shalt not take the name of the Lord thy God in vain: 05:28 for the Lord will not hold him guiltless 05:30 that taketh His name in vain. 05:32 Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy. 05:36 Six day shalt thou labor, and do all thy work: 05:39 but the seventh day is the Sabbath of the Lord thy God: 05:42 in it thou shalt not do any work, 05:45 thou, nor thy son, nor thy daughter, 05:48 thy manservant, nor thy maidservant, nor thy cattle, 05:51 nor thy stranger that is within thy gates: 05:53 for in six days the Lord made heaven and earth, 05:56 the sea, and all that in them is, and rested the seventh day: 06:01 wherefore the Lord blessed the Sabbath day, and hallowed it. 06:05 Honor thy father and thy mother: 06:07 that thy days may be long upon the land which the Lord thy God 06:11 giveth thee. Thou shalt not kill. 06:14 Thou shalt not commit adultery. 06:17 Thou shalt not steal. 06:19 Thou shalt not bear false witness against thy neighbor. 06:22 Thou shalt not covet thy neighbor's house, 06:25 thou shalt not covet thy neighbor's wife, 06:27 nor his manservant, nor his maidservant, 06:30 nor his ox, nor his ass, nor any thing that is thy neighbor's. 06:34 And all the people saw the thunderings, and the lightnings, 06:38 and the noise of the trumpet, and the mountain smoking: 06:41 and when the people saw it, they removed, and stood afar off. 06:44 And they said unto Moses, Speak thou with us, 06:48 and we will hear: but let not God speak with us, lest we die. 06:51 And Moses said unto the people, Fear not: 06:54 for God is come to prove you, 06:56 and that His fear may be before your faces, that ye sin not. 07:01 And the people stood afar off, 07:03 and Moses drew near unto the thick darkness where God was. 07:06 And the Lord said unto Moses, Thus thou shalt say unto the 07:09 children of Israel, Ye have seen that I have talked with you 07:12 from heaven. Ye shall not make with me gods of silver, 07:16 neither shall ye make unto you gods of gold. 07:19 And altar of earth thou shalt make unto Me, 07:21 and shalt sacrifice thereon thy burnt offerings, 07:23 and thy peace offerings, thy sheep, and thine oxen: 07:27 in all places where I record My name, I will come unto thee, 07:31 and I will bless thee. 07:33 And if thou wilt make Me an altar of stone, 07:36 thou shalt not build it of hewn stone: 07:38 for if thou lift up thy tool upon it, thou hast polluted it. 07:42 Neither shalt thou go up by steps unto mine altar, 07:45 that thy nakedness be not discovered thereon. 07:49 Continuing with Exodus chapter 21 07:52 in the King James version. 07:53 Now these are the judgments 07:56 which thou shalt set before them. 07:57 If thou buy a Hebrew servant, six years he shall serve: 08:02 and in the seventh he shall go out free for nothing. 08:06 If he came in by himself, he shall go out by himself: 08:09 if he were married, then his wife shall go out with him. 08:12 If his master have given him a wife, 08:15 and she have born him sons or daughters; 08:18 the wife and her children shall be her master's, 08:21 and he shall go out by himself. 08:23 And if the servant shall plainly say, I love my master, 08:27 my wife, and my children; I will not go out free: 08:31 Then his master shall bring him unto the judges; 08:34 he shall also bring him to the door, or unto the door post; 08:37 and his master shall bore his ear through with an awl; 08:41 and he shall serve him for ever. 08:44 And if a man sell his daughter to be a maidservant, 08:47 she shall not go out as the menservants do. 08:51 If she please not her master, who hath betrothed her 08:55 to himself, then shall he let her be redeemed: 08:58 to sell her unto a strange nation he shall have no power, 09:02 seeing he hath dealt deceitfully with her. 09:05 And if he have betrothed her unto his son, 09:09 he shall deal with her after the manner of daughters. 09:12 If he take him another wife; her food, her raiment, 09:16 and her duty of marriage, shall he not diminish. 09:19 And if he do not these three unto her, 09:22 then shall she go out free without money. 09:25 He that smiteth a man, so that he die, 09:28 shall be surely put to death. 09:30 And if a man lie not in wait, but God deliver him 09:33 into his hand; then I will appoint thee a place 09:36 whither he shall flee. 09:39 But if a man come presumptiously upon his neighbor, 09:42 to slay him with guile; 09:44 thou shalt take him from mine altar, that he may die. 09:47 And he that smiteth his father, or his mother, 09:50 shall be surely put to death. 09:52 And he that stealth a man, and selleth him, 09:54 or if he be found in his hand, he shall surely be put to death. 09:58 And he that curseth his father, or his mother, 10:00 shall surely be put to death. 10:02 And if men strive together, and one smite another with a stone, 10:06 or with his fist, and he die not, but keepeth his bed: 10:10 If he rise again, and walk abroad upon his staff, 10:13 then shall he that smote him be quit: 10:16 only he shall pay for the loss of his time, 10:19 and shall cause him to be thoroughly healed. 10:22 And if a man smite his servant, or his maid, with a rod, 10:26 and if he die under his hand; he shall be surely punished. 10:30 Notwithstanding, if he continue a day or two, 10:33 he shall not be punished: for he is his money. 10:37 If men strive and hurt a woman with child, 10:40 so that her fruit depart from her, 10:43 and yet no mischief follow: he shall be surely punished, 10:47 according as the woman's husband will lay upon him; 10:50 and he shall pay as the judges determine. 10:53 And if any mischief follow, then thou shalt give life for life. 10:57 Eye for eye, tooth for tooth, hand for hand, foot for foot, 11:03 Burning for burning, wound for wound, stripe for stripe. 11:08 And if a man smite the eye of his servant, 11:11 or the eye of his maid, that it perish; 11:14 he shall let him go free for his eye's sake. 11:17 And if he smite out his manservant's tooth, 11:19 or his maidservant's tooth, 11:21 he shall let him go free for his tooth's sake. 11:24 If an ox gore a man or a woman that they die: 11:28 then the ox shall be surely stoned, 11:31 and his flesh shall not be eaten; 11:32 but the owner of the ox shall be quit. 11:35 But if the ox were want to push with his horn in time past, 11:40 and it hath been testified to his owner, 11:43 and he hath not kept him in, but that he hath killed 11:46 a man or a woman; the ox shall be stoned, 11:48 and his owner also shall be put to death. 11:52 If there be laid on him a sum of money, 11:55 then he shall give for the ransom of his life 11:58 whatsoever is laid upon him. 12:01 Whether he have gored a son, or have gored a daughter, 12:04 according to this judgment shall it be done unto him. 12:07 If the ox shall push a manservant or a maidservant; 12:11 he shall give unto their master thirty shekels of silver, 12:15 and the ox shall be stoned. 12:18 And if a man shall open a pit, or if a man shall dig a pit, 12:21 and not cover it, and an ox or an ass fall therein; 12:24 The owner of the pit shall make it good, 12:27 and give money unto the owner of them; 12:28 and the dead beast shall be his. 12:31 And if one man's ox hurt another's, that he die; 12:35 then they shall sell the live ox, and divide the money of it; 12:39 and the dead ox also they shall divide. 12:41 Or if it be known that the ox hath used to push in time past, 12:45 and his owner hath not kept him in; he shall surely pay 12:49 ox for ox; and the dead shall be his own. 12:52 Continuing to read in Exodus 12:55 chapter 22, and this is the 12:57 King James version. 12:59 If a man shall steal an ox, or a sheep, and kill it, 13:01 or sell it; he shall restore five oxen for an ox, 13:06 and four sheep for a sheep. 13:08 If a thief be found breaking up, and be smitten that he die, 13:12 there shall no blood be shed for him. 13:14 If the sun be risen upon him, 13:17 there shall be blood shed for him; 13:18 for he should make full restitution; 13:21 if he have nothing, then he shall be sold for his theft. 13:24 If the theft be certainly found in his hand alive, 13:27 whether it be ox, or ass, or sheep; 13:29 he shall restore double. 13:31 If a man shall cause a field or vineyard to be eaten, 13:35 and shall put in his beast, and shall feed in another man's 13:38 field; of the best of his own field, and of the best 13:42 of his own vineyard, shall he make restitution. 13:45 If fire break out, and catch in thorns, 13:48 so that the stacks of corn, or the standing corn, 13:51 or the field, be consumed therewith; 13:54 he that kindled the fire shall surely make restitution. 13:58 If a man shall deliver unto his neighbor money or stuff to keep, 14:03 and it be stolen out of the man's house: 14:05 if the thief be found, let him pay double. 14:08 If the thief be not found, then the master of the house 14:12 shall be brought unto the judges, to see whether he have 14:15 put his hand unto his neighbor's goods. 14:18 For all manner of trespass, whether it be for ox, for ass, 14:22 for sheep, for raiment, or for any manner of lost thing, 14:25 which another challenges to be his, 14:27 the cause of both parties shall come before the judges; 14:30 and whom the judges shall condemn, 14:32 he shall pay double unto his neighbor. |
