00:17 Hello, and welcome to His Words are Life.
00:19 I'm Kelly Mowrer and thank you for joining again with me
00:21 to read the word of God. When we were last together, Moses had
00:25 gathered the Israelites together and was reviewing with them
00:29 their history and how God had freed them from Egypt, and
00:32 brought them through the wilderness. He was reviewing
00:35 both their disobediences and God's mercy and forgiveness and
00:40 protection and care all on that journey.
00:42 Before we pick up this story of Moses and the Israelites,
00:45 Let's pray together, Dear Lord, Thank you for
00:48 your guidance and protection in each of our lives and thank you
00:51 that your counsel is as alive as is a two-edged sword for
00:56 us to day to bring us safely to the land of promise
01:00 in heaven with you soon. Please be with us now as we read.
01:03 We love you so much and thank you for loving us. Amen
01:06 When we were leaving off last time it was in Deuteronomy,
01:12 chapter 2, and we're going to pick up there in the middle of
01:15 the chapter, starting with verse 25.
01:18 This is the King James Version.
01:19 This is Moses speaking to the children of Israel.
01:23 This day will I begin to put the dread of thee and
01:29 the fear of thee upon the nations that are under the
01:31 whole heaven, who shall hear report of thee and shall tremble
01:34 and be in anguish because of thee. And I sent messengers
01:38 out of the wilderness of Kedemoth unto Sihon
01:41 king of Heshbon with words of peace, saying, Let me pass
01:44 through thy land: I will go along by the high way,
01:47 I will neither turn right unto the right hand nor to the left
01:50 Thou shalt sell me meat for money, that I may eat;
01:53 and give me water for money that I may drink:
01:56 only I will pass through on my feet;
01:58 (As the children of Esau which dwell in Seir, and the Moabites
02:02 which dwell in Ar, did unto me;) until I shall pass over Jordan
02:06 into the land which the Lord our God giveth us.
02:08 But Sihon king of Heshbon would not let us pass by him:
02:12 for the Lord thy God hardened his spirit, and made his heart
02:16 obstinate that he might deliver him into thy hand,
02:20 as appeareth this day. And the Lord said unto me,
02:23 Behold, I have begun to give Sihon and his land before thee:
02:27 begin to possess, that thou mayest inherit his land.
02:31 Then Sihon came out against us, he and all his people to fight
02:36 at Jahaz. And the Lord our God delivered him before us;
02:40 and we smote him, and his sons, and all his people.
02:43 And we took all his cities at that time, and utterly
02:46 destroyed the men, and the women, and the little ones
02:49 at every city, we left none to remain: Only the cattle
02:53 we took for a prey unto ourselves, and the spoil
02:55 of the cities which we took. >From Aroer, which is by the
02:59 brink of the river of Arnon, and from the city that is by
03:02 the river, even unto Gilead, there was not one city
03:06 too strong for us: the Lord our God delivered all unto us:
03:11 Only unto the land of the children of Ammon
03:14 thou camest not, nor unto any place of the river Jabbok,
03:18 nor unto the cities in the mountains, nor unto whatsoever
03:21 the Lord our God forbad us. Continuing in
03:25 the book of Deuteronomy, chapter 3, and this is the King James
03:28 Version. Then we turned, and went up the way to Bashan:
03:32 and Og, the king of Bashan came out against us,
03:35 he and all his people, to battle at Edrei. And the Lord said
03:40 unto me, Fear him not: for I will deliver him,
03:43 and all his people, and his land into thy hand.
03:46 and thou shalt do unto him as thou didst unto Sihon,
03:50 king of the Amorites, which dwelt at Heshbon.
03:52 So the Lord our God delivered into our hands, Og also,
03:57 the king of Bashan, and all his people: and we smote him until
04:00 none was left to him remaining. And we took all his cities
04:04 at that time, there was not a city which we took not from them
04:07 threescore cities, all the region of Argob,
04:10 the kingdom of Og in Bashan. All these cities were fenced
04:13 with high walls, gates, and bars; beside unwalled towns
04:18 a great many. And we utterly destroyed them,
04:21 as we did unto Sihon king of Heshbon, utterly destroying
04:25 the men, women, and children of every city. But all the cattle,
04:29 and the spoil of the cities, we took for a prey to ourselves.
04:33 And we took at that time out of the hand of the two kings
04:36 of the Amorites the land that was on this side Jordan,
04:40 from the river of Arnon unto mount Hermon; (Which Hermon
04:45 the Sidonians call Sirion; and the Amorites call it Shenir;)
04:49 All the cities of the plain, and all Gilead, and all Bashan,
04:54 unto Salchah and Edrei, cities of the kingdom of Og in Bashan.
04:59 For only Og king of Bashan remained of the remnant
05:03 of giants; behold, his bedstead was a bedstead of iron;
05:07 is it not in Rabbath of the children of Ammon?
05:10 nine cubits was the length thereof,
05:13 and four cubits the breadth of it,
05:15 after the cubit of a man. And this land, which we possessed
05:19 at that time, from Aroer, which is by the river Arnon,
05:22 and half mount Gilead, and the cities thereof, gave I unto the
05:28 Reubenites and to the Gadites. And the rest of Gilead,
05:32 and all Bashan, being the kingdom of Og,
05:34 gave I unto the half tribe of Manasseh; all the region of
05:39 Argob, with all Bashan, which was called the land of giants.
05:43 Jair the son of Manasseh took all the country of Argob
05:47 unto the coasts of Geshuri and Maachathi; and called them
05:52 after his own name, Bashanhavothjair,
05:55 unto this day. And I gave Gilead unto Machir.
05:59 And unto the Reubenites and unto the Gadites I gave from
06:03 Gilead even unto the river Arnon half the valley,
06:06 and the border even unto the river Jabbok,
06:09 which is the border of the children of Ammon;
06:11 The plain also, and Jordan, and the coast thereof,
06:15 from Chinereth even unto the sea of the plain,
06:18 even the salt sea, under Ashdothpisgah eastward.
06:22 And I commanded you at that time, saying, The Lord your God
06:26 hath given you this land to possess it: ye shall pass over
06:31 armed before your brethren the children of Israel,
06:33 all that are meet for the war. But your wives, and your little
06:38 ones and your cattle,
06:41 shall abide in your cities which I have given you; until the Lord
06:46 have given rest unto your brethren, as well as unto you,
06:49 and until they also possess the land which the Lord your God
06:53 hath given them beyond Jordan: and then shall ye return
06:56 every man unto his possession which I have given you.
06:59 And I commanded Joshua at that time, saying, Thine eyes have
07:04 seen all that the Lord your God hath done unto these 2 kings
07:08 so shall the Lord do unto all the kingdoms
07:12 whither thou passest. Ye shall not fear them:
07:15 for the Lord your God he shall fight for you.
07:19 And I besought the Lord at that time, saying, O Lord God,
07:23 thou hast begun to shew thy servant thy greatness,
07:27 and thy mighty hand: for what God is there in heaven
07:30 or in earth, that can do according to thy works,
07:32 and according to thy might? I pray thee, let me go over,
07:37 and see the good land that is beyond Jordan,
07:40 that goodly mountain, and Lebanon.
07:41 But the Lord was wroth with me for your sakes,
07:46 and would not hear me: and the Lord said unto me,
07:49 let it suffice thee; speak no more unto me of this matter.
07:53 Get thee up into the top of Pisgah, and lift up thine eyes
07:59 westward, and northward, and southward, and eastward,
08:03 and behold it with thine eyes; for thou shalt not go over
08:07 this Jordan. But charge Joshua, and encourage him,
08:13 and strengthen him: for he shall go over before this people,
08:17 and he shall cause them to inherit the land
08:20 which thou shalt see. So we abode in the valley
08:24 over against Bethpeor.
08:26 Continuing in Derteronomy chapter four.
08:29 Now therefore hearken, O Israel, unto the statutes and unto
08:35 the judgments, which I teach you, for to do them,
08:39 that ye may live, and go in and possess the land which the Lord
08:44 God of your fathers giveth you. Ye shall not add unto the word
08:48 which I command you, neither shall ye diminish aught from it,
08:51 that ye may keep the commandments
08:53 of the Lord your God which I command you.
08:56 Your eyes have seen what the Lord did because of Baal-peor:
09:00 for all the men that followed Baal-peor, the Lord thy God
09:03 hath destroyed them from among you. But ye that did cleave
09:08 unto the Lord your God are alive every one of you this day.
09:11 Behold, I have taught you statutes and judgments,
09:15 even as the Lord my God commanded me,
09:18 that ye should do so in the land whither ye go to possess it.
09:22 Keep therefore and do them; for this is your wisdom
09:27 and your understanding in the sight of the nations,
09:29 which shall hear all these statutes, and say,
09:32 Surely this great nation is a wise and understanding people.
09:35 For what nation is there so great, who hath God so nigh
09:40 unto them, as the Lord our God is in all things that we call
09:45 upon him for? And what nation is there so geat,
09:48 that hath statutes and judgments so righteous as all this law,
09:52 which I set before you this day? Only take heed to
09:56 thyself, and keep thy soul diligently, lest thou forget
10:00 the things which thine eyes have seen,
10:02 and lest they depart from thy heart all the days of thy life:
10:05 but teach them thy sons, and thy sons' sons;
10:09 Specially the day that thou stoodest before the Lord thy God
10:13 in Horeb, when the Lord said unto me, Gather me the people
10:16 together, and I will make them to hear my words, that they may
10:20 learn to fear me all the days that they shall live
10:23 upon the earth, and that they may teach their children.
10:26 And ye came near and stood under the mountain;
10:30 and the mountain burned with fire unto the midst of heaven,
10:33 with darkness, clouds, and thick darkness.
10:36 And the Lord spake unto you out of the midst of the fire:
10:39 ye heard the voice of the words, but saw no similitude;
10:43 only ye heard a voice. And he declared unto you his covenant,
10:48 which he commanded you to perform, even 10 commandments;
10:51 and he wrote them upon two tables of stone.
10:54 And the Lord commanded me at that time to teach you statutes
10:57 and judgments, that ye might do them in the land whither ye go
11:00 over to possess it. Take ye therefore good heed
11:04 unto yourselves; for ye saw no manner of similitude on the day
11:08 that the Lord spake unto you in Horeb out of the midst
11:11 of the fire: Lest ye corrupt yourselves, and make
11:15 you a graven image, the similitude of any figure,
11:18 the likeness of male or female, the likeness of any beast
11:21 that is on the earth, the likeness of any winged fowl
11:23 that flieth in the air, the likeness of anything
11:26 that creepeth on the ground, the likeness of any fish that
11:29 is in the waters beneath the earth:
11:30 And lest thou lift up thine eyes unto heaven,
11:34 and when thou seest the sun, and the moon, and the stars,
11:38 even all the host of heaven, shouldest be driven to worship
11:40 them and serve them, which the Lord thy God hath divided
11:45 unto all nations under the whole heaven.
11:47 But the Lord hath taken you, and brought you forth
11:51 out of the iron furnace, even out of Egypt,
11:54 to be unto him a people of inheritance, as ye are this day.
11:58 Furthermore, the Lord was angry with me for your sakes, and
12:03 sware that I should not go over Jordan, and that I should
12:07 not go in unto that good land, which the Lord thy God giveth
12:10 the for an inheritance: But I must die in this land, I must
12:15 not go over Jordan: but ye shall go over, and possess
12:18 that good land. Take heed unto yourselves, lest ye forget the
12:22 covenant of the Lord your God, which he made with you, and
12:26 make you a graven image, or the likeness of any thing,
12:29 which the Lord thy God hath forbidden thee. For the Lord
12:32 thy God is a consuming fire, even a jealous God.
12:36 When thou shalt beget children, and children's children,
12:39 ye shall have remained long in the land, and shall corrupt
12:43 yourselves, and make a graven image, or the likeness
12:46 of anything and shall do evil in the sight of the Lord thy God
12:49 to provoke him to anger: I call heaven and earth to witness
12:53 against you this day, that ye shall soon utterly perish
12:56 from off the land whereunto ye go over Jordan to possess it;
13:00 ye shall not prolong your days upon it, but shall utterly
13:04 be destroyed. And the Lord shall scatter you among the nations,
13:08 and ye shall be left few in number among the heathen,
13:11 whither the Lord shall lead you. And there ye shall serve gods
13:15 the work of men's hands, wood and stone, which neither see,
13:19 nor hear, nor eat, nor smell. But if from thence thou shalt
13:25 seek the Lord thy God, thou shalt find him, if thou seek him
13:30 with all thy heart and with all thy soul.
13:33 When thou art in tribulation, and all these things are come
13:36 upon thee, even in the latter days, if thou turn to the Lord
13:40 thy God and shall be obedient unto his voice;
13:45 he will not forsake thee, neither destroy thee,
13:49 nor forget the covenant of thy fathers which he sware unto
13:53 them. For ask now of the days that are past,
13:57 which were before thee, since the day that God created man
14:00 upon the earth, and ask from the one side of heaven
14:02 unto the other, whether there hath been any such thing
14:05 as this great thing is, or hath been heard like it?
14:09 Did ever people hear the voice of God speaking out of the midst
14:13 of the fire, as thou hast heard and live? Or hath God assayed
14:18 to go and take him a nation from the midst of another nation
14:21 by temptations, by signs, and by wonders, and by war,
14:24 by a mighty hand, and by a stretched out arm,
14:26 and by great terrors, according to all that the Lord your God
14:30 did for your in Egypt before your eyes?
14:32 Thank you for being with me today.
