00:16 Hello, and welcome to HIS WORDS ARE LIFE.
00:18 I'm Kelly Mowrer, and thank your for joining with me today, 00:21 to read the Word of God together. 00:23 Let's pray before we start. Dear Lord, thank you so much 00:27 for your gracious mercy to us. We need you every 00:31 step of our way we want to have ordered by the words 00:34 of this book. Please send your Holy Spirit to open our hearts, 00:38 and to bring wisdom to our lives as we read together. 00:41 We love you and thank you for loving us. Amen. 00:43 We are reading today in the book of Joshua, 00:47 starting in chapter 10, verse 1, This is the King James Version. 00:51 Now it came to pass when, Adonizedec king of Jerusalem 00:57 had heard how Joshua had taken Ai, and had utterly destroyed it 01:02 as he had done to Jericho, and her king, so he had done to Ai 01:06 her king and how the inhabitants of Gibeon had made peace 01:09 with Israel, and were among them; that they feared greatly, 01:12 because Gibeon was a great city, as one of the royal cities, 01:15 and because it was greater than Ai, and all the men thereof 01:18 were mighty. Wherefore Adonizedec king of Jerusalem 01:22 sent unto Hoham king of Hebron, and unto Piram king of Jarmuth, 01:27 and unto Japhia king of Lachish, and unto Debir king of Eglon, 01:32 saying, Come up unto me and help me, that we may smite Gibeon: 01:36 for it hath made peace with Joshua and with the children 01:39 of Israel. Therefore the five kings of the Amorites, 01:44 the king of Jerusalem, the king of Hebron, the king of Jarmuth, 01:46 the king of Lachish, the king of Eglon, gathered themselves 01:50 together, and went up, they and all their hosts, and encamped 01:54 before Gibeon made war against it. 01:56 And the men of Gibeon sent unto Joshua to the camp to Gilgal, 02:00 saying, Slack not thy hand from thy servants; come up to us 02:04 quickly and save us, and help us: for all the kings 02:08 of the Amorites that dwell in the mountains are gathered 02:10 together against us. So Joshua ascended from Gilgal, he, 02:14 and all the people of war with him, and all the mighty men 02:17 of valor. And the Lord said unto Joshua, Fear them not: 02:21 for I have delivered them into thine hand; 02:23 there shall not a man of them stand before thee. 02:26 Joshua therefore came unto them suddenly, 02:30 and went up from Gilgal all night. 02:32 And the Lord discomfited them before Israel, and slew them 02:35 with a great slaughter at Gibeon and chased them 02:39 along the way that goeth up to Bethhoron, and smote them 02:42 to Azekah, and unto Makkedah. And it came to pass as they fled 02:45 from before Israel, and were in the going down to Bethhoron, 02:49 that the Lord cast down great stones from heaven upon them 02:52 unto Azekah, and they died: they were more which died 02:57 with hailstones than they whom the children of Israel slew 03:00 with the sword. Then spake Joshua to the Lord in the day 03:04 when the Lord delivered up the Amorites before the children 03:06 of Israel. And he said in the sight of Israel, 03:09 Sun, stand thou still upon Gibeon; and thou Moon, in the 03:14 valley of Ajalon. And the sun stood still, and the moon stayed 03:19 until the people had avenged themselves upon their enemies. 03:22 Is not this written in the book of Jasher? 03:24 So the sun stood still in the midst of heaven, 03:27 and hasted not to go down about a whole day. 03:30 And there was no day like that before it or after it, 03:34 that the Lord hearkened unto the voice of a man: 03:37 for the Lord fought for Israel. 03:40 And Joshua returned, and all Israel with him, unto the camp 03:44 to Gilgal. But these five kings fled, and hid themselves 03:48 in a cave at Makkedah. And it was told Joshua saying, 03:51 The five kings are found hid in a cave at Makkedah. 03:54 And Joshua said, Roll great stones upon the mouth of 03:59 the cave, and set men by it for to keep them: 04:01 And stay ye not, but pursue after your enemies, 04:04 and smite the hindmost of them; suffer them not to enter 04:07 into their cities: for the Lord your God hath delivered them 04:10 into your hand. And it came to pass, when Joshua 04:13 and the children of Israel had made an end of slaying them 04:16 with a very great slaughter, till they were consumed, 04:19 that the rest which remained of them entered into fenced cities. 04:23 And all the people returned to the camp to Joshua at Makkedah 04:27 in peace: none moved his tongue against any of the children 04:31 of Israel. Then said Joshua, Open the mouth of the cave, 04:35 and bring out those five kings unto me out of the cave. 04:38 And they did so, and brought forth those five kings unto him 04:42 out of the cave, the king of Jerusalem, the king of Hebron, 04:45 the king of Jarmuth, the king of Lachish, the king of Eglon, 04:48 And it came to pass, when they brought out those kings 04:51 unto Joshua, that Joshua called for all the men of Israel, 04:54 and said unto the captains of the men of war 04:57 which went with him, Come near put your feet upon the necks 05:01 of these kings. And they came near, and put their feet 05:04 upon the necks of them. And Joshua said unto them, 05:07 Fear not, nor be dismayed, be strong and of good courage: 05:12 for thus shall the Lord do to all your enemies against 05:16 whom ye fight. And afterward Joshua smote them, 05:19 and slew them, and hanged them on five trees: 05:21 and they were hanging upon the trees until the evening. 05:25 And it came to pass at time of the going down of the sun, 05:28 that Joshua commanded, and they took them down off the trees, 05:31 and cast them into the cave wherein they had been hid, 05:35 and laid great stones in the cave's mouth, 05:37 which remain until this very day. 05:39 And that day Joshua took Makkedah, and smote it 05:43 with the edge of the sword, and the king thereof he utterly 05:46 destroyed, them and all the souls that were therein; 05:49 and he let none remain: and he did to the king of Makkeda 05:53 as he did unto the king of Jericho. 05:55 Then Joshua passed from Makkedah and all Israel with him, 05:59 unto Libnah, and fought against Libnah: 06:02 and the Lord delivered it also, and the king thereof, 06:05 into the hand of Israel; and he smote it with the edge 06:07 of the sword, and all the souls that were therein; 06:10 he let none remain in it; but did unto king thereof 06:14 as he did unto the king of Jericho. 06:16 And Joshua passed from Libnah, and all Israel with him, 06:21 unto Lachish, and encamped against it and fought against it 06:24 and the Lord delivered Lachish into the hand of Israel, 06:27 which took it on the second day, and smote it with the edge 06:30 of the sword, and all the souls that were therein, 06:32 according to all that he had done to Libnah. 06:35 Then Horam king of Gezer came up to help Lachish: 06:39 and Joshua smote him and his people, 06:41 until he had left him none remaining. 06:44 And from Lachish Joshua passed unto Eglon, and all Israel 06:47 with him and they encamped against it and fought against it 06:50 and they took it on that day, and smote it with the edge of 06:54 the sword and all the souls that were therein 06:56 he utterly destroyed that day, according to all 06:59 that he had done to Lachish. 07:01 And Joshua went up from Eglon, and all Israel with him, 07:05 unto Hebron; and they fought against it: and they took it, 07:08 and smote it with the edge of the sword, and the king thereof, 07:10 and all the cities thereof, and all the souls that were therein; 07:13 he left none remaining, according to all that he 07:16 had done to Eglon; but destroyed it utterly, 07:18 and all the souls that were therein. 07:20 And Joshua returned, and all Israel with him, to Debir; 07:24 and fought against it: and he took it, and the king thereof, 07:27 and all the cities thereof; and they smote them with the edge 07:30 of the sword, and utterly destroyed all the souls 07:33 that were therein; he left none remaining: 07:35 as he had done to Hebron, so he did to Debir, and to the king 07:39 thereof; as he had done also to Libnah, and to her king. 07:43 So Joshua smote all the country of the hills and of the south, 07:47 and of the vale, and of the springs, and all their kings: 07:50 he left none remaining, but utterly destroyed 07:53 all the breathed, as the Lord God of Israel commanded. 07:57 And Joshua smote them from Kadesh Barnea even unto Gaza, 08:02 and all the country of Goshen even unto Gibeon. 08:04 and all these kings and their land did Joshua take 08:08 at one time, because the Lord God of Israel fought for Israel. 08:12 And Joshua returned, and all Israel with him, 08:15 unto the camp to Gilgal. 08:17 We're continuing to read in the book of Joshua, 08:20 chapter 11, and this is the King James version. 08:25 And it came to pass, when Jabin king of Hazor had heard 08:29 those things, that he sent to Jobab king of Madon, 08:32 and to the king of Shimron, and to the king of Achshaph, 08:36 and to the kings that were on the north of the mountains, 08:39 and of the plains south of Chinneroth, and in the valley, 08:42 and in the borders of Dor on the west, and to the Canaanite 08:46 on the east and on the west, and to the Amorite, 08:49 and the Hittite, and the Perizzite, and the Jebusite 08:52 in the mountains, and to the Hivite under Hermon in the land 08:55 of Mizpeh. And they went out, they and all their hosts 08:59 with them, much people, even as the sand that is upon the sea 09:02 shore in multitude, with horses and chariots very many. 09:06 And when all these kings were met together, 09:09 they came and pitched together at the waters of Merom, 09:11 to fight against Israel. And the Lord said unto Joshua, 09:15 Be not afraid because of them: for tomorrow about this time 09:20 will I deliver them up all slain before Israel: 09:23 thou shalt hock their horses, and burn their chariots 09:26 with fire. So Joshua came, and all the people of war with him, 09:30 against them by the waters of Merom suddenly; 09:33 and they fell upon them. And the Lord delivered them 09:37 into the hand of Israel, who smote them, and chased them 09:40 unto great Zidon, and unto Misrephothmaim, 09:44 and unto the valley of Mizpeh eastward; and they smote them, 09:48 until they left them none remaining. 09:49 And Joshua did unto them as the Lord bade him: 09:53 he hocked their horses, and burnt their chariots with fire. 09:57 And Joshua at that time turned back, and took Hazor, 10:00 and smote the king thereof with the sword: for Hazor beforetime 10:04 was the head of all those kingdoms. 10:05 And they smote all the souls that were therein 10:09 with the edge of the sword, utterly destroying them: 10:12 there was not any left to breathe: 10:14 and he burnt Hazor with fire. 10:16 And all the cities of those kings, and all the kings of them 10:19 did Joshua take, and smote them with the edge of the sword, 10:22 and he utterly destroyed them, as Moses the servant of the 10:26 Lord commanded. But as for the cities that stood still 10:30 in their strength, Israel burned none of them, save Hazor only; 10:34 that did Joshua burn. And all the spoil of these cities, 10:38 and the cattle, the children of Israel took for a prey 10:40 unto themselves; but every man they smote with the edge of 10:43 the sword, until they had destroyed them, 10:45 neither left they any to breathe. 10:47 As the Lord commanded Moses his servant, so did Moses 10:51 command Joshua, and so did Joshua: he left nothing undone 10:54 of all that the Lord commanded Moses. 10:57 So Joshua took all that land, the hills, and all the south 11:01 country and all the land of Goshen, and the valley, 11:04 and the plain, and the mountain of Israel, and the valley 11:06 of the same; even from the mount Halak that goeth up to Seir, 11:10 even unto Baalgad in the valley of Lebanon under mount Hermon: 11:15 and all their kings he took, and smote them, and slew them. 11:18 Joshua made war a long time with all those kings. 11:21 There was not a city that made peace with the children 11:24 of Israel, save the Hivites the inhabitants of Gibeon: 11:26 all other they took in battle. 11:29 For it was of the Lord to harden their hearts, 11:32 that they should come against Israel in battle, 11:34 that he might destroy them utterly, and that they might 11:37 have no favor, but that he might destroy them, 11:40 as the Lord commanded Moses. 11:42 And at that time came Joshua, and cut off the Anakins 11:47 from the mountains, from Hebron, from Debir, from Anab, 11:50 and from all the mountains of Judah, 11:52 and from all the mountains of Israel: 11:54 Joshua destroyed them utterly with their cities. 11:57 There was none of the Anakims left in the land of the children 12:00 of Israel: only in Gaza, in Gath and in Ashdod, there remained. 12:05 So Joshua took the whole land, according to all that the Lord 12:10 said unto Moses; and Joshua gave it for an inheritance 12:14 unto Israel according to their divisions by their tribes. 12:17 And the land rested from war. 12:20 We're going to skip now, chapter 12. 12:24 There is a listing of a bunch of the kings and the victories 12:29 that were given to Joshua, and the children of Israel. 12:32 In chapter 13, the first verse, speaks about Joshua being old, 12:37 and stricken in years. And then it goes on again to list 12:42 some of the names of the territories and the cities there 12:46 We're going to pick up in chapter 14. 12:48 This is the King James Version. 12:50 These are the countries with which the children of Israel 12:53 inherited in the land of Canaan, which Eleazar the priest, 12:56 and Joshua the son of Nun, and the heads of the fathers 12:58 of the tribes of the children of Israel, distributed 13:01 for inheritance to them. By lot was their inheritance, 13:05 as the Lord commanded by the hand of Moses, for the 9 tribes 13:08 and for the half tribe. For Moses had given the inheritance 13:12 of two tribes and an half tribe on the other side Jordan: 13:14 But unto the Levites, he gave none inheritance among them. 13:18 For the children of Joseph were two tribes, 13:20 Manasseh and Ephraim: therefore they gave no part 13:23 unto the Levites in the Land, save cities to dwell in, 13:25 with their suburbs, for their cattle and for their substance. 13:28 As the Lord commanded Moses, so the children of Israel did, 13:31 and they divided the land. 13:33 Then the children of Judah came unto Joshua in Gilgal: 13:36 and Caleb the son of Jephunneh the Kenezite said unto him, 13:40 Thou knowest the thing that the Lord said unto Moses 13:44 the man of God concerning me and thee in Kadeshbarnea. 13:48 Forty years old was I when Moses the servant of the Lord sent me 13:52 from Kadeshbarnea to espy out the land; 13:55 and I brought him word again as it was in mine heart. 13:58 Nevertheless my brethren that went up with me made the heart 14:02 of the people melt: but I wholly followed the Lord my God. 14:06 And Moses sware on that day, saying, Surely the land whereon 14:11 thy feet have trodden shall be thine inheritance, 14:13 and thy children's forever, because thou hast wholly 14:16 followed the Lord the Lord my God. And now behold, 14:20 the Lord hath kept me alive, as he said, these 40 and 5 years, 14:24 even since the Lord spake this word unto Moses, 14:26 while the children of Israel wandered in the wilderness: 14:29 and now, lo, I am this day four score and five years old. |
