00:16 Hello, and welcome to HIS WORDS ARE LIFE.
00:19 I'm Kelly Mowrer, and thank you for coming apart with me 00:22 again to read the word of God. Let's pray before we start. 00:25 Dear God, thank you so much for showing us the way 00:29 that we should walk and for giving us a light 00:32 so that we may walk in your word safely and on solid ground. 00:37 Please be with now as we read. Help us to understand and to do 00:41 what we believe. We love you. Amen. 00:44 We've been reading the book of Joshua, and we're coming now 00:50 to chapter 24. And in my bible it is titled, Joshua's address. 00:56 Joshua is about to do the same thing that Moses did 00:59 with the children of Israel: call them together and review 01:02 with them God's leading in their lives. 01:04 And I think that's something God would have each of us to do 01:07 in our lives, to look back at over how he has brought 01:09 us safely, to remember the times when he has blessed us, 01:12 and to remember his words and his commandments to us. 01:15 And then ask his help in obeying this so that we may be blessed 01:18 by him. We pick up in Joshua 24. This is the King James Version. 01:22 And Joshua gathered all the tribes of Israel to Shechem, 01:27 and called for the elders of Israel, and for their heads, 01:29 and for their judges, and for their officers; 01:32 and they presented themselves before God. 01:35 And Joshua said unto all the people, Thus saith the Lord God 01:39 of Israel, Your fathers dwelt on the other side of the flood 01:42 in old time, even Terah, the father of Abraham, 01:45 and the father of Nachor: and they served other gods. 01:48 And I took your father, Abraham, from the other side of the flood 01:52 and led him throughout all the land of Canaan, and multiplied 01:56 his seed, and gave him Isaac. And I gave unto Isaac, 02:00 Jacob and Esau: and I gave unto Esau mount Seir, to possess it; 02:04 but Jacob and his children went down into Egypt. 02:08 I sent Moses also and Aaron, and I plagued Egypt, 02:13 according to that which I did among them and afterward 02:15 I brought you out. And I brought your fathers out of Egypt: 02:19 and ye came unto the sea; and the Egyptians pursued after 02:23 your fathers with chariots and horsemen unto the Red sea. 02:26 And when they cried unto the Lord, he put darkness between 02:30 you and the Egyptians, and brought the sea upon them, 02:33 and covered them; and your eyes have seen what I have done in 02:37 Egypt: and ye dwelt in the wilderness a long season. 02:41 And I brought you into the land of the Amorites, which dwelt 02:45 on the other side Jordan; and they fought with you: 02:48 and I gave them unto your hand, that ye might possess their land 02:51 and I destroyed them from before you. 02:54 Then Balak the son of Zippor, king of Moab, 02:58 arose and warred against Israel, and sent and called Balaam, 03:01 the son of Beor, to curse you: But I would not hearken 03:05 unto Balaam; therefore he blessed you still: 03:08 so I delivered you out of his hand. And ye went over Jordan, 03:12 and came unto Jericho: and the men of Jericho fought against 03:15 you, the Amorites, and the Perizzites, and the Canaanites, 03:18 and the Hittites, and the Girgashites, and the Hivites, 03:21 and the Jebusites; and I delivered them into your hand. 03:25 And I sent the hornet before you which drave them out from before 03:29 you, even the two kings of the Amorites; 03:31 but not with thy sword, nor with thy bow. 03:34 And I have given you a land for which ye did not labour, 03:38 and cities which ye built not, and ye dwell in them; 03:42 of the vineyards and oliveyards which ye planted not, do ye eat. 03:47 Now therefore fear the Lord, and serve him in sincerity 03:53 and in truth: and put away the gods which your fathers served 03:57 on the other side of the flood, and in Egypt; 03:59 and serve ye the Lord. And if it seem evil unto you 04:03 to serve the Lord, choose you this day whom ye will serve; 04:07 whether the gods which your fathers served that were on 04:10 the other side of the flood, or the gods of the Amorites, 04:13 in whose land ye dwell: but as for me and my house, 04:17 we will serve the Lord. And the people answered and said, 04:21 God forbid that we should forsake the Lord, 04:24 to serve other gods; For the Lord our God, he it is that 04:28 brought us up and our fathers out of the land of Egypt, 04:30 from the house of bondage, and which did those great signs 04:34 in our sight, and preserved us in all the way wherein we went, 04:37 and among all the people through whom we passed: 04:40 And the Lord drave out from before us all the people, 04:43 even the Amorites which dwelt in the land: 04:45 Therefore will we also serve the Lord; for he is our God. 04:50 And Joshua said unto the people, Ye cannot serve the Lord: 04:55 for he is an holy God; he is a jealous God; 04:58 He will not forgive your transgressions nor your sins. 05:01 If ye forsake the Lord, and serve strange gods, 05:04 then he will turn and do you hurt, and consume you, 05:07 after that he hath done you good. 05:09 And the people said unto Joshua, Nay; but we will serve the Lord. 05:14 And Joshua said unto the people, Ye are witnesses against 05:18 yourselves that ye have chosen the Lord, to serve him. 05:22 And they said, We are witnesses. 05:25 Now therefore put away, said he, the strange gods 05:30 which are among you, and incline your heart unto the Lord God 05:34 of Israel, And the people said unto Joshua, 05:37 The Lord our God will we serve, and his voice will we obey. 05:43 So Joshua made a covenant with the people that day, 05:47 and set them a statute and an ordinance in Shechem. 05:50 And Joshua wrote these words in the book of the law of God, 05:54 and took a great stone, and set it up there under an oak, 05:57 that was by the sanctuary of the Lord. 05:59 And Joshua said unto all the people, Behold; this stone 06:02 shall be a witness unto us; for it hath heard all the words 06:06 of the Lord which he spake unto us: it shall be therefore 06:10 a witness unto you, lest ye deny your God. 06:13 So Joshua let the people depart, every man unto his inheritance. 06:18 And it came to pass after these things, that Joshua 06:21 the son of Num, the servant of the Lord, died, 06:25 being an hundred and ten years old. 06:28 And they buried him in the border of his inheritance 06:31 in Timnathserah, which is in mount Ephraim, 06:34 on the north side of the hill of Gaash. 06:36 And Israel served the Lord all the days of Joshua, 06:40 and all the days of the elders that overlived Joshua, 06:43 and which had known all the works of the Lord, 06:45 that he had done for Israel. 06:47 And the bones of Joseph, which the children of Israel 06:50 brought up out of Egypt, buried they in Shechem, 06:53 in a parcel of ground which Jacob bought of the sons of 06:56 Hamor, the father of Shechem, for a hundred pieces of silver: 06:59 and it became the inheritance of the children of Joseph. 07:02 And Eleazar the son of Aaron died; and they buried him 07:06 in a hill that pertained to Phinehas his son, 07:09 which was given him in mount Ephraim. 07:11 We're moving now to the book of Judges. 07:14 This is the King James Version. Judges, chapter one. 07:18 Now after the death of Joshua it came to pass, 07:23 that the children of Israel asked the Lord, saying, 07:26 Who shall go up for us against the Canaanites first, 07:29 to fight against them? And the Lord said, Judah shall go up: 07:33 behold, I have delivered the land into his hand. 07:37 And Judah said unto Simeon his brother, Come up with me 07:41 into my lot, that we may fight against the Canaanites; 07:44 and I likewise will go with thee into thy lot. 07:47 So Simeon went with him. And Judah went up; 07:50 and the Lord delivered the Canaanites and the Perizzites 07:53 unto their hand: and they slew of them in Bezek, 10,000 men. 07:57 And they found Adonibezek in Bezek; 08:00 and they fought against him, and they slew the Canaanites and 08:03 the Perizzites. But Adonibezek fled; and they pursued after him 08:08 and caught him, and cut off his thumbs and his great toes. 08:12 And Adonibezek said, Threescore and ten kings, 08:16 having their thumbs and their great toes cut off, 08:19 gathered their meat under my table: as I have done, 08:23 so God hath requited me. And they brought him to Jerusalem, 08:27 and there he died. Now the children of Judah had fought 08:32 against Jerusalem, and had taken it, and smitten it with the edge 08:35 of the sword, and set the city on fire. 08:37 And afterward the children of Judah went down to fight against 08:42 the Canaanites, that dwelt in the mountain, and in the south, 08:45 and in the valley. And Judah went against the Canaanites, 08:49 that dwelt in Hebron: now the name of Hebron before was 08:54 Kirjatharba. And they slew Sheshai, and Ahiman, and Talmai. 08:59 And from thence he went against the inhabitants of Debir: 09:02 and the name of Debir before was Kirjathsepher: 09:05 And Caleb said, He that smiteth Kirjathsepher, and taketh it, 09:10 to him will I give Achsah my daughter to wife. 09:14 And Othniel, the son of Kenaz, Caleb's younger brother, 09:19 took it: and he gave him Achsah his daughter to wife. 09:22 And it came to pass, when she came to him, that she moved him 09:26 to ask of her father a field: and she lighted from off 09:30 her ass; and Caleb said unto her, What wilt thou? 09:32 And she said unto him, Give me a blessing: for thou hast given 09:36 me a south land; give me also springs of water. 09:38 And Caleb gave her the upper springs and the nether springs. 09:42 And the children of the Kenite, Moses' father in law, 09:46 went up out of the city of palm trees 09:49 with the children of Judah into the wilderness of Judah, 09:52 which lies in the south of Arad; and they went and dwelt among 09:55 the people. And Judah went with Simeon his brother, 09:59 and they slew the Canaanites that inhabited Zephath, 10:02 and utterly destroyed it. And the name of the city 10:05 was called Hormah. Also Judah took Gaza with the coast thereof 10:11 and Askelon with the coast thereof, 10:13 and Ekron with the coast thereof. 10:15 and the Lord was with Judah; and he drave out the inhabitants 10:19 of the mountain; but could not drive out the inhabitants 10:22 of the valley, because they had chariots of iron. 10:25 And they gave Hebron unto Caleb, as Moses said: 10:29 and he expelled thence the three sons of Anak. 10:33 And the children of Benjamin did not drive out the Jebusites 10:37 that inhabited Jerusalem; but the Jebusites dwell 10:40 with the children of Benjamin in Jerusalem unto this day. 10:43 And the house of Joseph, they also went up against Bethel: 10:47 and the Lord was with them. And the house of Joseph 10:51 sent to descry Bethel. Now the name of the city before was Luz. 10:55 And the spies saw a man come forth out of the city, 10:59 and they said unto him, Shew us, we pray thee, the entrance 11:02 into the city and we will shew thee mercy. 11:05 And when he shewed them the entrance into the city, 11:08 they smote the city with the edge of the sword; 11:10 but they let go the man and all his family. 11:13 And the man went into the land of the Hittites and built a city 11:17 and called the name thereof Luz: which is the name thereof 11:19 unto this day. Neither did Manasseh drive out the 11:23 inhabitants of Bethshean and her towns, nor Taanach 11:27 and her towns, nor the inhabitants of Dor and her towns 11:30 nor the inhabitants of Ibleam and her towns. 11:33 nor the inhabitants of Megiddo and her towns: 11:36 but the Cannanites would dwell in that land. 11:39 And it came to pass, when Israel was strong, 11:42 that they put the Canaanites to tribute, and did not utterly 11:45 drive them out. Neither did Ephraim drive out the Canaanites 11:49 that dwelt in Gezer; but the Canaanites dwelt in Gezer 11:52 among them. Neither did Zebulun drive out the inhabitants 11:56 of Kitron, nor the inhabitants of Nahalol; 11:59 but the Canaanites dwelt among them, and became tributaries. 12:02 Neither did Asher drive out the inhabitants of Accho, 12:06 nor the inhabitants of Zidon, nor of Ahlab, nor of Achzib, 12:10 nor of Helbah, nor of Aphik, nor of Rehob: 12:13 But the Asherites dwelt among the Canaanites, 12:16 the inhabitants of the land: for they did not drive them out. 12:19 Neither did Naphtali drive out the inhabitants of Bethshemesh, 12:23 nor the inhabitants of Bethanath; 12:25 but he dwelt among the Canaanites, the inhabitants 12:28 of the land: nevertheless the inhabitants of Bethshemesh 12:32 and of Bethanath became tributaries unto them. 12:35 And the Amorites forced the children of Dan 12:38 into the mountain: for they would not suffer them 12:41 to come down to the valley: But the Amorites would dwell 12:44 in mount Heres in Aijalon, and in Shaalbim: 12:48 yet the hand of the house of Joseph prevailed, 12:51 so that they became tributaries. And the coast of the Amorites 12:54 was from the going up to Akrabbim, from the rock, 12:58 and upward. Continuing now with Judges, 13:01 chapter two and this is the King James Version. 13:04 And an angel of the Lord came up from Gilgal to Bochim, and said, 13:09 I made you to go up out of Egypt and have brought you 13:13 unto the land which I sware unto your fathers; and I said, 13:16 I will never break my covenant with you. 13:18 And ye shall make no league with the inhabitants 13:20 of this land; ye shall throw down their altars: 13:24 but ye have not obeyed my voice: why have ye done this? 13:29 Wherefore I also said, I will not drive them out 13:33 from before you: but they shall be as thorns in your sides 13:37 and their gods shall be a snare unto you. 13:41 And it came to pass, when the angel of the Lord spake 13:45 these words unto all the children of Israel, 13:47 that the people lifted up their voice and wept, 13:50 And they called the name of that place Bochim: 13:53 and they sacrificed there unto the Lord. 13:55 And when Joshua, had let the people go, 13:58 the children of Israel went every man unto his inheritance 14:01 to possess the land. And the people served the Lord 14:04 all the days of Joshua, and all the days of the elders 14:07 that outlived Joshua, who had seen all the great works 14:10 of the Lord, that he did for Israel. 14:12 And Joshua the son of Nun, the servant of the Lord, died, 14:17 being an hundred and ten years old. 14:20 and they buried him in the borders of his inheritance 14:22 in Timnathheres, in the mount of Ephraim, on the north side 14:26 of the hill Gaash. - Thank you for joining with me today, 14:30 to read the Book.
