00:16 Hello, and welcome to His Words are Life.
00:18 I'm Kelly Mowrer and we're reading the book of 1st Samuel 00:22 today about the ark of God being returned out of the country of 00:26 the Philistines. Before we continue the story, 00:28 lets pray together. Dear God please come and be with us 00:33 now in a special way as we read this word of yours that you have 00:38 brought to us at this time. Show us what you would 00:41 have us to learn from here to put into our own lives 00:45 and to our service to you and to each other. We love you so much 00:49 and thank you for loving us. Amen. 00:51 We're reading in 1st Samuel, chapter 6. We're picking up in 00:56 verse 20. - And the men of Bethshemesh said, Who is able 01:01 to stand before this holy Lord God? and to whom shall 01:05 he go up from us? And they sent messengers 01:08 to the inhabitants of Kirjathjearim, saying, 01:12 The Philistines have brought again the ark of the Lord; 01:15 come ye down, and fetch it up to you. 01:17 Continuing on in 1st Samuel, chapter 7. 01:21 And the men of Kirjathjearim came, and fetched up the ark 01:25 of the Lord and brought it into the house of Abinadab 01:28 in the hill and sanctified Eleazar his son to keep the ark 01:31 of the Lord. And it came to pass while the ark abode 01:35 in Kirjathjearim, that the time was long; for it was 20 years: 01:39 and all the house of Israel lamented after the Lord. 01:44 And Samuel spake unto all the house of Israel, saying, If ye 01:48 do return unto the Lord with all your hearts, then put away 01:53 the strange gods and Ashtaroth from among you, and prepare your 01:57 hearts unto the Lord, and serve him only and he will deliver you 02:01 out of the hand of the Philistines. 02:03 Then the children of Israel did put away Baalim and Ashtaroth, 02:08 and served the Lord only. And Samuel said, Gather all Israel 02:12 to Mizpeh, and I will pray for you unto the Lord. 02:14 And they gathered together to Mizpeh, and drew water 02:17 and poured it out before the Lord, and fasted on that day, 02:20 and said there, We have sinned against the Lord. 02:23 And Samuel judged the children of Israel in Mizpeh. 02:27 And when the Philistines heard that the children of Israel 02:30 were gathered together to Mizpeh, the lords of the 02:32 Philistines went up against Israel. And when the children 02:35 of Israel heard it, they were afraid of the Philistines. 02:39 And the children of Israel said to Samuel, Cease not to cry 02:42 unto the Lord our God for us, that he will save us out of 02:45 the hand of the Philistines. And Samuel took a sucking lamb, 02:49 and offered it for a burnt offering wholly unto the Lord: 02:53 and Samuel cried unto the Lord for Israel; and the Lord heard 02:57 him. And as Samuel was offering up the burnt offering, 03:01 the Philistines drew near to battle against Israel: 03:04 but the Lord thundered with a great thunder on that day 03:08 upon the Philistines, and discomfited them; 03:11 and they were smitten before Israel. And the men of Israel 03:15 went out of Mizpeh, and pursued the Philistines, and smote them, 03:18 until they came under Bethcar. Then Samuel took a stone, 03:23 and set it between Mizpeh and Shen, and called the name of it 03:27 Ebenezer, saying, Hitherto hath the Lord helped us. 03:31 So the Philistines were subdued, and they came no more into the 03:35 coast of Israel: and the hand of the Lord was against 03:37 the Philistines all the days of Samuel. 03:39 And the cities which the Philistines had taken 03:42 from Israel, from Ekron were restored to Israel, 03:44 from Ekron even unto Gath; and the coasts thereof did Israel 03:48 deliver out of the hands of the Philistines. And there was peace 03:52 between Israel and the Amorites. And Samuel judged Israel 03:55 all the days of his life. And he went from year to year 04:00 in circuit to Bethel, and Gilgal and Mizpeh, 04:03 and judged Israel in all those places. And his return was 04:08 to Ramah; for there was his house; and there he judged 04:11 Israel; and there he built an altar unto the Lord. 04:15 Continuing in 1st Samuel, chapter 8. 04:19 And it came to pass, when Samuel was old, that he made his sons 04:25 judges over Israel. Now the name of his firstborn was Joel; 04:29 and the name of his second, Abiah: they were judges 04:32 in Beersheba. And his sons walked not in his ways, 04:37 but turned aside after lucre, and took bribes, and perverted 04:42 judgment. Then all the Elders of Israel gathered themselves 04:46 together and came to Samuel unto Samuel in Ramah, and said unto 04:49 him, Behold, thou art old, and thy sons walk not in thy ways: 04:54 now make us a king to judge us like all the nations. 04:59 But the thing displeased Samuel when they said, Give us a king 05:03 to judge us. And Samuel prayed unto the Lord. And the Lord said 05:07 unto Samuel, Hearken unto the voice of the people in all that 05:10 they say unto thee: for they have not rejected thee, but they 05:15 have rejected me, that I should not reign over them. 05:18 According to all the works which they have done since the day I 05:22 brought them up out of Egypt even unto this day, wherewith 05:26 they have forsaken me, and served other gods, so do they 05:30 also unto thee. Now therefore, hearken unto their voice: 05:34 howbeit yet protest solemnly unto them, 05:38 and shew them the manner of the king that shall 05:41 reign over them. And Samuel told all the words of the Lord 05:45 unto the people that asked of him a king. And he said, 05:49 This will be the manner of the king that shall reign over you: 05:52 He will take your sons, and appoint them for himself, 05:56 for his chariots, and to be his horsemen; and some shall run 06:01 before his chariots. And he will appoint him captains over 06:04 thousands, and captains over fifties; and will set them 06:06 to ear his ground, and to reap his harvest, and to make his 06:09 instruments of war, and instruments of his chariots. 06:12 And he will take your daughters to be confectionaries, and to be 06:16 cooks, and to bakers. And he will take your fields, and your 06:21 vineyards, and your oliveyards, even the best of them, and give 06:24 them to his servants. And he will take the tenth of your seed 06:28 and of your vineyards, and give them to his officers, and to his 06:31 servants. And he will take your menservants, 06:33 and your maidservants, and your goodliest young men, and your 06:37 asses, and put them to his work. He will take the tenth of your 06:42 sheep, and ye shall be his servants. And ye shall cry out 06:46 in that day because of your king which ye shall have chosen 06:49 you; and the Lord will not hear you in that day. Nevertheless 06:56 the people refused to obey the voice of Samuel; and they said, 06:59 Nay; but we will have a king over us; that we also may be 07:04 like all the nations; and that our king may judge us, 07:07 and go out before us, and fight our battles. 07:10 And Samuel heard all the words of the people, and he rehearsed 07:15 them in the ears of the Lord. And the Lord said to Samuel, 07:18 Hearken unto their voice, and make them a king. 07:22 And Samuel said unto the men of Israel, 07:24 Go ye every man unto his city. 07:28 Continuing the story of 1st Samuel, chapter 9, 07:32 This is the King James Version. 07:33 Now there was a man of Benjamin whose name was Kish, the son of 07:39 Abiel, the son of Zeror, the son of Bechorath, the son of 07:43 Aphiah, a Benjamite, a mighty man of power. And he had a son, 07:48 whose name was Saul, a choice young man, and a goodly: 07:52 And there was not among the children of Israel a goodlier 07:56 person than he: from his shoulders and upward 07:59 he was higher than any of the people. And the asses of Kish, 08:04 Saul's father, were lost. And Kish said to Saul his son, 08:10 Take now one of the servants with thee, and arise, go seek 08:13 the asses. And he passed through mount Ephraim and 08:17 passed through the land of Shalisha, but they found 08:21 them not: then they passed through the land of Shalim, and 08:25 there they were not: and he passed through the land of the 08:29 Benjamites, but they found them not. And when they were come 08:33 to the land of Zuph, Saul said to his servant that was with him 08:37 Come and let us return; lest my father leave caring for the 08:41 asses, and take thought for us. And he said unto him, Behold 08:45 now, there is in this city a man of God, and he is an honourable 08:49 man; all that he saith cometh surely to pass: now let us go 08:54 thither; peradventure he can shew us our way 08:56 that we should go. Then said Saul to his servant, But, behold 09:01 if we go, what shall we bring the man? for the bread is spent 09:05 in our vessels, and there is not a present to bring to the man 09:08 of God: what have we? And the servant answered Saul again, 09:12 and said, Behold, I have here at hand the fourth part of a shekel 09:16 of silver that will I give to the man of God, 09:19 to tell us our way. - Beforetime in Israel, when a man 09:23 went to inquire of God, thus he spake, Come, and let us go to 09:27 the seer: for he that is now called a Prophet was beforetime 09:31 called a seer. - Then said Saul to his servant, 09:35 Well said; come, let us go. So they went unto the city where 09:40 the man of God was. And as they went up the hill to the city, 09:44 they found young maidens coming out to draw water, 09:47 and said unto them, Is the seer here? And they answered 09:51 them and said, He is; behold, he is before you: make haste now 09:55 for he came today to the city; for there is a sacrifice of the 09:59 people today in the high place: As soon as ye be come into 10:02 the city, ye shall straightway find him, before he go up 10:05 to the high place to eat: for the people will not eat until 10:09 he come, because he doth bless the sacrifice; and afterwards 10:11 they eat that be bidden. Now therefore get you up; 10:15 for about this time ye shall find him. And they went up 10:19 into the city: and when they were come into the city, 10:21 behold, Samuel came out against them, for to go up to the high 10:25 place. Now the Lord had told Samuel in his ear a day before 10:29 Saul came, saying, Tomorrow about this time I will send thee 10:33 a man out of the land of Benjamin, and thou shalt 10:36 anoint him to be a captain over my people Israel, that he may 10:41 save my people out of the hand of the Philistines: for I have 10:44 looked upon my people, because their cry is come upon me. 10:47 And when Samuel saw Saul, the Lord said unto him, Behold, 10:53 the man whom I spake to thee of! this same shall reign over my 10:58 people. Then Saul drew near to Samuel in the gate, and said, 11:03 Tell, me, I pray thee, where the seer's house is. And Samuel 11:07 answered Saul, and said, I am the seer: go up before me 11:12 unto the high place; for ye shall eat with me today, 11:14 and tomorrow I will let thee go, and will tell thee all that is 11:18 in thine heart. And as for thine asses that were lost 3 days ago, 11:23 set not thy mind on them; for they are found. 11:27 And on whom is all the desire of Israel? Is it not on thee, 11:31 and on all thy father's house? And Saul answered and said, 11:36 Am not I a Benjamite, of the smallest of the tribes of Israel 11:41 and my family the least of all the families of the tribe of 11:44 Benjamin? wherefore then speakest thou so to me? 11:48 And Samuel took Saul and his servant, and brought them 11:52 into the parlour, and made them sit in the chiefest place 11:55 among them that were bidden, which were about 30 persons. 11:58 And Samuel said unto the cook, Bring the portion which I gave 12:03 thee, of which I said unto thee, of which I said unto thee, 12:05 Set it by thee. And the cook took up the shoulder, 12:08 and that which was upon it, and set it before Saul. 12:11 And Samuel said, Behold that which is left! set it before 12:17 thee and eat: for unto this time hath it been kept for thee 12:21 since I said, I have invited the people. So Saul did eat with 12:26 Samuel that day. And when they were come down from the high 12:29 place into the city, Samuel communed with Saul 12:32 upon the top of the house. And they arose early: 12:35 and it came to pass about the spring of the day, 12:38 that Samuel called Saul to the top of the house, saying, 12:41 Up, that I may send thee away. And Saul arose, and they went 12:46 out both of them, he and Samuel abroad. 12:49 And as they were going down to the end of the city, 12:52 Samuel said to Saul, Bid the servant pass on before us, 12:56 and he passed on, but stand thou still awhile, 13:01 that I may shew thee the word of God. 13:03 Continuing 1st Samuel, chapter 10. 13:06 Then Samuel took a vial of oil, and poured it upon his head, 13:11 and kissed him, and said, Is it not because the Lord 13:14 hath anointed thee to be captain over his inheritance? 13:17 When thou art departed from me today, then thou shalt find 13:21 two men by Rachel's sepulchre in the border of Benjamin 13:24 at Zelzah; and they will say unto thee, The asses which thou 13:28 wentest to seek are found: and, lo, thy father hath left 13:32 the care of the asses, and sorroweth for you, saying, 13:34 What shall I do for my son? Then shalt thou go on forward 13:39 from thence, and thou shalt come to the plain of Tabor, 13:41 and there shall meet thee three men going up to God to Bethel, 13:46 one carrying three kids, and another carrying three loaves 13:49 of bread, and another carrying a bottle of wine: And they will 13:54 salute thee, and give thee two loaves of bread; which thou 13:57 shalt receive of their hands. After that thou shalt come 14:01 to the hill of God, where is the garrison of the Philistines: 14:03 and it shall come to pass, when thou art come thither 14:06 to the city, that thou shalt meet a company of prophets 14:10 coming down from the high place with a psaltery, and a tabret, 14:13 and a pipe, and a harp, before them; and they shall prophecy: 14:17 And the spirit of the Lord will come upon thee, and thou shalt 14:21 prophesy with them, and shalt be turned into another man. 14:24 And let it be, when these signs are come unto thee, that thou 14:28 do as occasion serve thee; for God is with thee. 14:32 Goodbye. |
