00:15 Hello, and welcome to HIS WORDS ARE LIFE
00:17 I'm Kelly Mowrer and thank you for coming apart with me
00:20 to read the word of God together.
00:21 When we were last reading we were in the story of
00:25 Israel asking the prophet Samuel to put a king in charge of them
00:29 to be their leader so they could be like the other nations
00:31 around them. And Samuel says to God, that they have rejected
00:35 me as their leader and God tells Samuel, No, they have rejected
00:38 me as their leader. Nevertheless, God is going
00:42 to give Israel their request and give them a king.
00:45 Before we pick up the story, let's pray together.
00:47 Dear Lord, we come now to hear your word and to ask you
00:52 to remove from our hearts everything that we have
00:56 placed there above you. Let us learn from the foolish sins of
01:01 Israel and we ask you to become the king
01:05 and the Lord of our lives forever. Be with us now as
01:08 we read and give us understanding.
01:10 We love you so much and thank you for loving us, Amen.
01:13 We're reading in 1st Samuel, chapter 10, and we're picking up
01:18 in verse 8 as Samuel is giving instructions to Saul.
01:22 And thou shalt go down before me to Gilgal; and, behold, I
01:28 will come down unto thee, to offer burnt offerings,
01:30 and to sacrifice sacrifices of peace offerings:
01:33 seven days shalt thou tarry, till I come to thee,
01:37 and shew thee what thou shalt do. And it was so,
01:41 that when he had turned his back to go from Samuel,
01:43 God gave him another heart: and all those signs came to pass
01:49 that day. And when they came thither to the hill, behold,
01:53 a company of prophets met him; and the spirit of God came upon
01:57 him and he prophesied among them. And it came to pass,
02:01 when all that knew him beforetime saw that,
02:04 behold he prophesied among the prophets, then the people said
02:08 one to another, What is this that is come unto the son of
02:12 Kish? Is Saul also among the prophets?
02:15 And one of the same place answered and said,
02:18 But who is their father? Therefore it became a proverb,
02:22 Is Saul also among the prophets?
02:25 And when he had made an end of prophesying, he came to
02:29 the high place. And Saul's uncle said unto him and to his servant
02:32 Whither went ye? And he said, To seek the asses:
02:36 and when we saw that they were no where, we came to Samuel.
02:40 And Saul's uncle said, Tell me I pray thee, what Samuel said
02:44 unto you. And Saul said unto his uncle, He told us plainly that
02:49 the asses were found. But of the matter of the Kingdom, whereof
02:53 Samuel spake, he told him not.
02:55 And Samuel called the people together unto the Lord
02:59 to Mizpeh; And said unto the children of Israel,
03:02 Thus sayeth the Lord God of Israel, I brought up Israel
03:06 out of Egypt, and delivered you out of the hand of the Egyptians
03:09 and out of the hand of all kingdoms, and of them that
03:13 oppressed you: And ye have this day rejected your God,
03:18 who himself saved you out of all your adversities
03:22 and your tribulations; and ye have said unto him, Nay,
03:25 but set a king over us. Now therefore present yourselves
03:30 before the Lord by your tribes, and by your thousands.
03:34 And when Samuel had caused all the tribes of Israel
03:37 to come near, the tribe of Benjamin was taken.
03:41 When he had caused the tribe of Benjamin to come near
03:44 by their families, the family of Matri was taken, and Saul
03:49 the son of Kish was taken: and when they sought him,
03:52 he could not be found. Therefore they inquired of the Lord
03:55 further, if the man should yet come thither.
03:58 And the Lord answered, Behold, he hath hid himself
04:02 among the stuff. And they ran and fetched him thence:
04:05 and when he stood among the people, he was higher than
04:09 any of the people from his shoulders and upward.
04:12 And Samuel said to all the people, See ye him whom
04:16 the Lord hath chosen, that there is none like him
04:19 among all the people? And all the people shouted, and said,
04:22 God save the king. Then Samuel told the people the manner of
04:27 the kingdom, and wrote it in a book, and laid it up
04:29 before the Lord. And Samuel sent all the people away,
04:32 every man to his house. And Saul also went home to Gibeah;
04:37 and there went with him a band of men, whose hearts God had
04:41 touched. But the children of Bellial said, How shall this man
04:45 save us? And they despised him and brought him no presents.
04:50 But he held his peace. - We're continuing to read in the book
04:54 of 1st Samuel, chapter 11, and this is the King James Version.
04:58 Then Nahash the Ammonite came up and encamped
05:04 against Jabeshgilead: and all the men of Jabesh said unto
05:08 Nahash, Make a covenant with us and we will serve thee.
05:10 And Nahash the Ammonite answered them, on this condition
05:14 will I make a covenant with you, that I may thrust out all your
05:19 right eyes, and lay it for a reproach upon all Israel.
05:22 And the elders of Jabesh said unto them, Give us 7 days'
05:27 respite, that we may send messengers unto all the coasts
05:31 of Israel: and then, if there be no man to save us,
05:34 we will come out to thee. Then came the messengers to Gibeah
05:38 of Saul, and told the tidings in the ears of the people:
05:42 and all the people lifted up their voices, and wept.
05:45 And, behold, Saul came after the herd out of the field;
05:49 and Saul said, What aileth the people that they weep?
05:52 And they told him the tidings of the men of Jabesh.
05:56 And the spirit of God came upon Saul when he heard those tidings
06:01 and his anger was kindled greatly. And he took a yoke of
06:05 oxen, and hewed them in pieces, and sent them throughout all
06:09 the coasts of Israel by the hands of messengers, saying,
06:12 Whosoever cometh not forth after Saul and after Samuel,
06:16 so shall it be done unto his oxen. And the fear of the Lord
06:21 fell on the people, and they came out with one consent.
06:24 And when he numbered them in Bezek, the children of Israel
06:28 were 300,000, and the men of Judah 30,000.
06:32 And they said unto the messengers that came,
06:35 Thus shall ye say unto the men of Jabeshgilead, Tomorrow,
06:40 by that time the sun be hot, ye shall have help.
06:43 And the messengers came and shewed it to the men of Jabesh;
06:47 and they were glad. Therefore the men of Jabesh said,
06:51 Tomorrow we will come out unto you, and ye shall do with us
06:54 all that seemeth good unto you. And it was so on the morrow,
06:58 that Saul put the people in three companies;
07:01 and they came into the midst of the host in the morning watch,
07:05 and slew the Ammonites until the heat of the day:
07:08 And it came to pass, that they which remained were scattered,
07:11 so that two of them were not left together.
07:13 And the people said unto Samuel, Who is he that said,
07:18 Shall Saul reign over us? bring the men, that we may put them
07:20 to death. And Saul said, There shall not a man be put to death
07:25 this day: for today the Lord hath wrought salvation in Israel
07:29 Then said Samuel to the people, Come, and let us go to Gilgal,
07:34 and renew the kingdom there. And all the people went to Gilgal;
07:38 and there they made Saul king before the Lord in Gilgal;
07:42 and there they sacrificed sacrifices of peace offerings
07:45 before the Lord; and there Saul and all the men of Israel
07:49 rejoiced greatly. We're continuing the story
07:53 in 1st Samuel chapter 12, and this is the King James Version.
07:57 And Samuel said unto all Israel, Behold, I have hearkened unto
08:02 your voice in all that ye said unto me, and have made a king
08:04 over you. And now, behold, the king walketh before you:
08:08 and I am old and grayheaded; and behold, my sons are with you:
08:12 and I have walked before you from my childhood until this day
08:15 Behold, here I am: witness against me before the Lord,
08:21 and before his anointed: whose ox have I taken? or whose ass
08:26 have I taken? or whom have I defrauded? whom have I oppressed
08:30 or of those whose hand have I received any bribe to blind mine
08:35 eyes therewith? and I will restore it you. And they said,
08:40 Thou hast not defrauded us, nor oppressed us, neither hast
08:45 thou taken aught of any man's hand. And he said unto them,
08:49 The Lord is witness against you, and his anointed is witness
08:54 this day, that ye have not found aught in my hand.
08:58 And they answered, He is witness. And Samuel said unto
09:03 the people, It is the Lord that advanced Moses and Aaron,
09:06 and that brought your fathers up out of the land of Egypt.
09:08 Now therefore stand still, that I may reason with you
09:12 before the Lord of all the righteous acts of the Lord,
09:16 which he did to you and to your fathers.
09:17 When Jacob was come into Egypt, and your fathers cried unto the
09:22 Lord, then the Lord sent Moses and Aaron, which brought forth
09:26 your fathers out of Egypt, and made them dwell in this place.
09:29 And when they forgat the Lord their God, he sold them into the
09:34 hand of Sisera, captain of the host of Hazor, and into the hand
09:37 of the Philistines, and into the hand of the king of Moab,
09:39 and they fought against them. And they cried unto the Lord,
09:43 and said We have sinned, because we have forsaken the Lord,
09:45 and have served Baalim and Ashtaroth: but now deliver us
09:49 out of the hand of our enemies, and we will serve thee.
09:52 And the Lord sent Jerubbaal, and Bedan, and Jephthah, and Samuel,
09:57 and delivered you out of the hand of your enemies
09:59 on every side, and ye dwelled safe. And when ye saw that
10:04 Nahash the king of the children of Ammon came against you,
10:07 ye said unto me, Nay; but a king shall reign over us:
10:10 when the Lord your God was your king. Now therefore behold
10:17 the king whom ye have chosen, and whom ye have desired!
10:20 and, behold, the Lord hath set a king over you.
10:23 If ye will fear the Lord, and serve him, and obey his voice,
10:29 and not rebel against the commandment of the Lord,
10:31 then shall both ye and also the king that reigneth over you
10:36 continue following the Lord your God. But if ye will not
10:41 obey the voice of the Lord, but rebel against
10:44 the commandment of the Lord, then shall the hand of the Lord
10:47 be against you, as it was against your fathers.
10:50 Now therefore stand and see this great thing,
10:54 which the Lord will do before your eyes.
10:56 Is it not wheat harvest today? I will call unto the Lord,
11:01 and he shall send thunder and rain; that ye may perceive
11:05 and see that your wickedness is great, which ye have done
11:07 in the sight of the Lord, in asking you a king.
11:10 So Samuel called unto the Lord; and the Lord sent thunder
11:14 and rain that day: and all the people greatly feared the Lord
11:18 and Samuel. And all the people said unto Samuel, Pray for thy
11:22 servants unto the Lord thy God, that we die not:
11:25 for we have added unto all our sins this evil to ask us a king.
11:30 And Samuel said unto the people Fear not: ye have done
11:34 all this wickedness: yet turn not aside from following
11:39 the Lord, but serve the Lord with all your heart;
11:42 And turn ye not aside: for then should ye go after vain things,
11:46 which cannot profit nor deliver; for they are vain. For the Lord
11:51 will not forsake his people for his great name's sake:
11:55 because it hath pleased the Lord to make you his people.
11:59 Moreover as for me, God forbid that I should sin against
12:04 the Lord in ceasing to pray for you: but I will teach you
12:07 the good and the right way: Only fear the Lord,
12:11 and serve him in truth with all your heart; for consider
12:16 how treat things he hath done for you. But if ye shall still
12:20 do wickedly, ye shall be consumed, both ye
12:24 and your king. We're continuing the story
12:27 in 1st Samuel, chapter 13, and this is the King James Version.
12:30 Saul reigned one year; and when he had reigned two years
12:35 over Israel, Saul chose him 3,000 men of Israel,
12:38 whereof 2,000 were with Saul in Michmash and in mount Bethel,
12:43 and a thousand were with Jonathan in Gibeah
12:45 of Benjamin: and the rest of the people he sent every man
12:48 to his tent. And Jonathan smote the garrison of the Philistines
12:53 that was in Geba, and the Philistines heard of it.
12:55 And Saul blew the trumpet throughout all the land,
12:58 saying, Let the Hebrews hear. And all Israel heard say
13:02 that Saul had smitten a garrison of the Philistines,
13:05 and that Israel also was had in abomination
13:08 with the Philistines. And the people were called together
13:11 after Saul to Gilgal. And the Philistines gathered themselves
13:15 together to fight with Israel, 30,000 chariots,
13:18 and 6,000 horsemen, and people as the sand which is on the sea
13:23 shore in multitude: and they came up and pitched in Michmash,
13:26 eastward from Bethaven. When the men of Israel saw that they were
13:31 in a strait, for the people were distressed, then the people
13:34 did hide themselves in caves, and in thickets, and in rocks,
13:38 and in high places, and in pits. And some of the Hebrews
13:42 went over Jordan to the land of Gad and Gilead. As for Saul,
13:47 he was yet in Gilgal; and the people followed him trembling.
13:51 And he tarried seven days, according to the set time
13:54 that Samuel had appointed: but Samuel came not to Gilgal;
13:58 were scattered from him. And Saul said, Bring hither a burnt
14:03 offering to me, and peace offerings. And he offered
14:06 the burnt offering. And it came to pass, that as soon as he had
14:09 made an end of offering the burnt offering, behold,
14:12 Samuel came; and Saul went out to meet him,
14:14 that he might salute him. And Samuel said,
14:17 What hast thou done? And Saul said, Because I saw that
14:22 the people were scattered from me, and that thou camest not
14:24 within the days appointed, and that the Philistines gathered
14:27 themselves together at Michmash; Therefore said I,
14:30 The Philistines will come down now upon me to Gilgal,
14:33 Thank you for being with me today.
