00:16 Hello, and welcome back to His Words are Life.
00:19 I'm Kelly Mowrer and we're reading the story of David, 00:22 and King Saul. The Spirit of the Lord is upon David 00:25 since he behaves himself wisely and God is with him: 00:28 But God has withdrawn from Saul and Saul is very angry 00:32 with David and seeking to kill him. He has tried several times 00:36 but King Saul has two children who are on David's side. 00:40 Son Jonathan loved David and Saul's daughter, Michal, 00:44 was married to David. When we were last together we were 00:46 reading how Saul had sent men lying in wait at David's house, 00:50 and Michal helped David to escape and hides an image in 00:54 the bed to make it look as though David is in the bed, 00:56 resting. We're going to pick up that story now, But before we do 01:00 Let's pray together. Our Father thank you for bringing us 01:05 to this time and your presence. Please take the words that we 01:09 will read here and let us learn the lesson that you have 01:13 for each of us in our lives, so that we may behave ourselves 01:16 wisely as did David and be men and women after your heart. 01:20 We long to know you. Thank you for loving us. We love you. Amen 01:24 Picking up in 1 Samuel, chapter 19, verse 17. 01:30 And Saul said unto Michal, Why has thou deceived me so, 01:35 and sent away mine enemy, that he is escaped? 01:37 And Michal answered Saul, He said unto me, Let me go; 01:42 why should I kill thee? So David fled, and escaped, 01:47 and came to Samuel to Ramah, and told him all that Saul had 01:51 done to him. And he and Samuel went and dwelt in Naioth. 01:56 And it was told Saul, saying, Behold David is at Naioth 02:00 in Ramah. And Saul sent messengers to take David: 02:03 and when they saw the company of the prophets prophesying, 02:07 and Samuel standing as appointed over them, the Spirit of God 02:11 was upon the messengers of Saul, and they also prophesied. 02:15 And when it was told Saul, he sent other messengers, 02:18 and they prophesied likewise. And Saul sent messengers again 02:23 the third time, and they prophesied also. 02:25 Then went he also to Ramah, and came to a great well 02:32 that is in Sechu: and he asked and said, Where are Samuel 02:37 and David? And one said, Behold they be at Naioth in Ramah. 02:43 And he went thither to Naioth in Ramah: and the spirit of God 02:46 was upon him also, and he went on, and prophesied, 02:50 until he came to Naioth in Ramah and he stripped off his clothes 02:54 also, and prophesied before Samuel in like manner, 02:57 and lay down naked all that day and all that night. 02:59 Wherefore they say, Is Saul also among the prophets? 03:04 Continuing in 1st Samuel, chapter 20. 03:08 This is the King James Version. And David fled from Naioth 03:13 in Ramah, and came and said before Jonathan, 03:15 What have I done? what is mine iniquity? and what is my sin 03:20 before thy father, that he seeketh my life? And he said 03:24 unto him, God forbid; thou shalt die: behold, my father will do 03:29 nothing either great or small, but that will shew it me: 03:32 and why should my father hide this thing from me? it is not so 03:36 And David sware moreover, and said, Thy father certainly 03:40 knoweth that I have found grace in thine eyes; and he saith, 03:44 let not Jonathan know this, lest he be grieved: but truly 03:48 as the Lord liveth, and as thy soul liveth, there is but a step 03:51 between me and death. Then said Jonathan unto David, Whatsoever 03:56 thy soul desireth, I will even do it for thee. 03:59 And David said unto Jonathan, Behold, tomorrow is the new moon 04:04 and I should not fail to sit with the king at meat: 04:08 but let me go, that I may hide myself in the field 04:12 unto the third day at even. If thy father at all miss me, 04:16 then say, David earnestly asked leave of me that he might run 04:21 to Bethlehem his city: for there is a yearly sacrifice 04:24 there for all the family. If he say thus, It is well; 04:28 thy servant shall have peace: but if be very wroth, 04:33 then be sure that evil is determined by him. 04:37 Therefore thou shalt deal kindly with thy servant; for thou hast 04:40 brought thy servant into a covenant of the Lord with thee: 04:43 notwithstanding, if there be in me iniquity, slay me thyself; 04:48 for why shouldest thou bring me to thy father? And Jonathan said 04:53 Far be it from thee: for if I knew certainly that evil 04:57 were determined by my father to come upon thee, 05:00 then would not I tell it thee? Then said David to Johathan, 05:05 Who shall tell me? or what if thy father answer thee roughly? 05:09 And Jonathan said unto David, Come, and let us go out 05:13 into the field. And they went out both of them into the field. 05:16 And Jonathan said unto David, O Lord God of Israel, 05:20 when I have sounded my father about tomorrow any time, 05:23 or the third day, and behold, if there be good toward David, 05:27 and I then send not unto thee, and shew it thee; The Lord do so 05:31 and much more to Jonathan: but if it please my father to 05:35 do thee evil, then I will shew it thee, and send thee away, 05:38 that thou mayest go in peace: And the Lord be with thee, 05:41 as he hath been with my father. And thou shalt not only 05:45 while yet I live shew me the kindness of the Lord, 05:48 that I die not; but also thou shalt not cut off thy kindness 05:52 from my house forever: no, not when the Lord hath cut off 05:56 the enemies of David every one from the face of the earth. 05:58 So Jonathan made a covenant with the house of David, saying, 06:03 Let the Lord even require it at the hand of David's enemies. 06:07 And Jonathan caused David to swear again, because he loved 06:11 him: for he loved him as he loved his own soul. 06:14 Then Jonathan said to David, Tomorrow is the new moon: 06:18 and thou shalt be missed, because thy seat will be empty. 06:21 And when thou hast stayed three days, then thou shalt go down 06:25 quickly, and come to the place where thou didst hide thyself 06:28 when the business was in hand, and shalt remain by the stone, 06:31 Ezel. And I will shoot 3 arrows on the side thereof, as though 06:36 I shot at a mark. And, behold, I will send a lad, saying, Go, 06:41 find out the arrows. If I expressly say unto the lad, 06:45 behold the arrows are on this side of thee, take them; 06:49 then come thou: for there is peace to thee, and no hurt; 06:52 as the Lord liveth. But if I say thus unto the young man, 06:56 Behold the arrows are beyond thee; go thy way: for the Lord 07:00 hath sent thee away. And as touching the matter which thou 07:04 and I have spoken of, behold, the Lord be between thee and me 07:08 forever. So David hid himself in the field: 07:12 and when the new moon was come, the king sat him down 07:15 to eat meat. And the king sat upon his seat, as at other times 07:19 even upon a seat by the wall: and Jonathan arose, and Abner 07:24 sat by Saul's side, and David's place was empty. Nevertheless 07:29 Saul spake not anything that day, for he thought something 07:33 had befallen him, He is not clean, surely, he is not clean. 07:36 And it came to pass on the morrow, which was the 2nd day 07:40 of the month, that David's place was empty: 07:42 And Saul said unto Jonathan, his son, Wherefore cometh not 07:46 the son of Jesse to meat, neither yesterday, nor today? 07:48 And Jonathan answered Saul, David earnestly asked leave of 07:53 me to go to Bethlehem: And he said, Let me go, I pray thee; 07:57 for our family hath a sacrifice in the city; and my brother, he 08:00 hath commanded me to be there: and now, if I have found favour 08:04 in thine eyes, let me get away, I pray thee, 08:05 and see my brethren, Therefore he cometh not unto the king's 08:09 table. Then Saul's anger was kindled against Jonathan, 08:14 and he said unto him, Thou son of the perverse rebellious woman 08:18 do not I know that thou hast chosen the son of Jesse to 08:21 thine own confusion, and unto the confusion of thy mother's 08:24 nakedness? For as long as the son of Jesse 08:27 liveth upon the ground, thou shalt not be established, 08:29 nor thy kingdom. Wherefore now send an fetch him unto me, 08:33 for he shall surely die. And Jonathan answered Saul 08:38 his father, and said unto him, Wherefore shall he be slain? 08:41 What hath he done? And Saul cast a javelin at him 08:46 to smite him: whereby Jonathan knew that it was determined of 08:51 his father to slay David. So Jonathan arose from the table 08:54 in fierce anger, and did eat no meat the 2nd day of the month: 08:57 for he was grieved for David, because his father had done 09:00 him shame. And it came to pass in the morning, that Jonathan 09:04 went out into the field at the time appointed with David, 09:07 and a little lad with him. And he said unto his lad, 09:10 Run, find out now the arrows which I shoot. And as the lad 09:15 ran, he shot an arrow beyond him. And when the lad was come 09:19 to the place of the arrow which Jonathan had shot, 09:21 Jonathan cried after the lad, and said, Is not the arrow 09:24 beyond thee? And Jonathan cried after the lad, Make speed, haste 09:28 stay not. And Jonathan's lad gathered up the arrows 09:32 and came to his master. But the lad knew not anything: 09:36 only Jonathan and David knew the matter. And Jonathan gave his 09:41 artillery unto his lad, and said unto him, Go, carry them 09:44 to the city. And as soon as the lad was gone, David arose 09:48 out of a place toward the south, and fell on his face 09:52 to the ground, and bowed himself three times: and they kissed 09:56 one another and wept one with another, until David exceeded. 10:00 And Jonathan said to David, Go in peace, forasmuch as we 10:04 have sworn both of us in the name of the Lord, saying, 10:07 The Lord be between me and thee, and between my seed and thy seed 10:12 forever. And he arose and departed: and Jonathan 10:15 went into the city. 10:17 We're continuing in 1st Samuel, chapter 21. 10:20 This is the King James Version. 10:22 Then came David to Nob to Ahimelech the priest: 10:28 and Ahimelech was afraid at the meeting of David, and said unto 10:32 him, Why art thou alone, and no man with thee? And David said 10:37 unto Ahimilech the priest, The king hath commanded me 10:40 a business, and hath said unto me Let no man know anything 10:43 of the business whereabout I send thee, and what I have 10:45 commanded thee: and I have appointed my servants 10:48 to such and such a place. Now therefore what is under thine 10:52 hand? give me 5 loaves of bread in mine hand, or what there is 10:57 present. And the priest answered David, and said, 11:00 There is no common bread under mine hand, but there is hallowed 11:05 bread; if the young men have kept themselves at least 11:08 from women. And David answered the priest, and said unto him, 11:10 Of a truth women have been kept from us about these 3 days, 11:14 since I came out, and the vessels of the young men are 11:17 holy and the bread is in a manner common, yea 11:21 though it were sanctified this day in the vessel. 11:23 So the priest gave him hallowed bread: for there was no bread 11:27 there but the shewbread, that was taken from before the Lord, 11:30 to put hot bread in the day when it was taken away. 11:33 Now a certain man of the servants of Saul was there 11:36 that day, detained before the Lord; and his name was Doeg, 11:41 and Edomite, the chiefest of the herdmen that belonged to Saul. 11:45 And David said unto Ahimelech, And is there not here 11:49 under thine hand spear or sword? for I have neither brought 11:52 my sword nor my weapons with me because the king's business 11:55 required haste. And the priest said, The sword of Goliath 11:59 the Philistine, whom thou slewest in the valley of Elah, 12:02 behold, it is here wrapped in a cloth behind the Ephod: 12:06 if thou wilt take that, take it: for there is no other save that 12:10 here. And David said, There is none like that; give it me. 12:15 And David arose, and fled that day for fear of Saul, 12:19 and went to Achish the king of Gath. And the servants of Achish 12:22 said unto them, Is not this David the king of the land? 12:26 Did they not sing one to another of him in dances, saying, 12:29 Saul hath slain his thousands, and David his ten thousands? 12:32 And David laid up these words in his heart and was sore afraid 12:36 of Achish the king of Gath. And he changed his behavior before 12:40 them and feigned himself mad in their hands, and scrabbled 12:44 on the doors of the gate, and let his spittle fall down upon 12:46 his beard. Then said Achish unto his servants, Lo, ye see the man 12:52 is mad: wherefore then have ye brought him to me? 12:54 Have I need of mad men, that ye have brought this fellow 12:57 to play the mad man in my presence? 12:59 shall this fellow come into my house? 13:01 Continuing the story in 1 Samuel, chapter 22. 13:05 David therefore departed thence and escaped to the cave 13:09 of Adullum: and when his brethren and all his father's 13:12 house heard it, they went down thither to him. And every one 13:16 that was in distress, and every one that was in debt, 13:18 and every one that was discontented, gathered 13:22 themselves unto him and he became a captain over them: 13:24 and there were with him about 400 men. And David went thence 13:28 to Mizpeh of Moab: and he said unto the king of Moab, 13:31 Let my father and my mother, I pray thee, come forth, and 13:35 be with you till I know what God will do for me. And he brought 13:39 them before the king of Moab: and they dwelt with him 13:41 all the while that David was in the hold. And the prophet Gad 13:46 said unto David, Abide not in the hold; depart, and get thee 13:50 into the land of Judah. Then David departed, and came into 13:53 the forest of Hareth. When Saul heard that David was discovered, 13:57 and the men that were with him, Now Saul abode in Gibeah under 14:00 at tree in Ramah, having his spear in his hand, 14:03 and all his servants were standing about him; 14:05 Then Saul said unto his servants that stood about him, 14:09 Hear now ye Benjamites; will the son of Jesse give every one 14:12 of you fields and vineyards, and make you all captains 14:15 of thousands, and captains of hundreds; that all of you 14:18 have conspired against me, and there is none that sheweth me 14:21 that my son hath made a league with the son of Jesse, 14:23 and there is none of you that is sorry for me, or sheweth unto me 14:27 that my son hath stirred up my servant against me, 14:29 to lie in wait, as at this day? 14:31 Thank you and please join me again next time. |
