00:16 Hello, and welcome to His Words are Life.
00:18 I'm Kelly Mowrer, and today we are reading in 1 Samuel, 00:22 chapter 25. When we were last together, we were reading the 00:25 story of Nabal and Abigail. Nabal and Abigail, husband 00:31 and wife, she was wise and beautiful, when he was churlish 00:35 and bad natured. David had sent his men to Nabal to ask of him a 00:40 favor and Nabal refused David's men. And as we continue in 00:46 chapter 25, we'll start on verse 12. But let's pray before we 00:49 start. Dear Lord, thank you so much for these words 00:53 and these stories. May we not just hear them today, but may 00:58 we take from them the lesson that you would have each of us 01:02 to put into practice in our hearts and in our lives 01:05 to your glory. Please be with us now and give us wisdom and 01:09 understanding as we read. We love you so much, and thank you 01:12 for loving us. Amen. - Picking up in 1 Samuel 25, verse 12. 01:17 So David's young men turned their way, and went again, 01:20 and came and told him all those sayings. And David said unto his 01:25 men, Gird ye on every man his sword. And they girded on every 01:31 man his sword; and David also girded on his sword: 01:35 and there went up after David about 400 men; and 200 abode 01:40 by the stuff. But one of the young men told Abigail, Nabal's 01:44 wife, saying, Behold, David sent messengers out of the wilderness 01:49 to salute our master; and he railed on them. But the men were 01:54 very good unto us, and we were not hurt, neither missed we any 01:57 thing, as long as we were conversant with them, 02:00 when we were in the fields: They were a wall unto us 02:03 both by night and day, all the while we were with them 02:07 keeping the sheep. Now therefore know and consider what thou wilt 02:11 do; for evil is determined against our master, and against 02:16 all his household: for he is such a son of Belial, 02:19 that a man cannot speak to him. Then Abigail made haste, 02:24 and took 200 loaves and 2 bottles of wine, and 5 sheep 02:29 ready dressed, and five measures of parched corn, 02:32 and hundred clusters of raisins, and 200 cakes of figs 02:37 and laid them on asses. And she said unto her servants, Go on 02:42 before me; behold, I come after you. But she told not 02:46 her husband, Nabal. And it was so, as she rode on the ass, 02:50 that she came down by the covert of the hill, and behold, David 02:54 and his men came down against her and she met them. 02:58 Now David had said, Surely in vain have I kept all that this 03:02 fellow hath in the wilderness, so that nothing was missed 03:05 of all that pertained unto him: and he hath requited me evil 03:08 for good. So and more also do God unto the enemies of David, 03:13 if I leave of all that pertain to him by the morning light 03:16 any that pisseth against the wall. And when Abigail saw David 03:21 she hasted, and lighted off the ass, and fell before David on 03:25 her face, and bowed herself to the ground, and fell at his feet 03:30 and said, upon me, my lord, upon let this iniquity be: and let 03:37 thine handmaid, I pray thee, speak in thine audience, 03:40 and hear the words of thine handmaid. Let not my lord, 03:44 I pray thee, regard this man of Belial, even Nabal: 03:48 for as his name is, so is he: Nabal is his name, and folly 03:53 is with him: but I thine handmaid saw not 03:57 the young men of my lord, whom thou didst send. Now therefore, 04:01 my lord, as the Lord liveth, and as thy soul liveth, seeing the 04:05 Lord hath withholden thee from coming to shed blood and from 04:09 avenging thyself with thine own hand, now let thine enemies, 04:13 and they that seek evil to my lord, be as Nabal. 04:16 And now this blessing which thine handmaid hath brought 04:20 unto my lord, let it even be given unto the young men that 04:23 follow my lord. I pray thee, forgive the trespass of thine 04:27 handmaid: for the Lord will certainly make my lord a sure 04:31 house: because my lord fighteth the battles of the Lord, and 04:34 evil hath not been found in thee all thy days. Yet a man is risen 04:39 to pursue thee, and to seek thy soul: but the soul of my lord 04:43 shall be bound in the bundle of life with the Lord thy God; 04:46 and the souls of thine enemies, them shall he sling out, as out 04:51 of the middle of a sling. And it shall come to pass when the lord 04:56 shall have done to my lord according to all the good 04:59 that he hath spoken concerning thee, and shall have appointed 05:02 thee ruler over Israel; That this shall be no grief unto thee 05:06 nor offence of heart unto my lord, either that thou hast shed 05:10 blood causeless, or that my lord hath avenged himself: 05:13 but when the lord shall have dealt well with my lord, 05:17 then remember thine handmaid. And David said to Abigail, 05:22 Blessed be the Lord God of Israel, which sent thee this day 05:25 to meet me: and blessed be thy advice and blessed be thou, 05:30 which hast kept me this day from coming to shed blood, 05:34 and from avenging myself with mine own hand. For in very deed, 05:38 as the Lord God of Israel liveth, which hath kept me back 05:42 from hurting thee, except thou hadst hasted and come to meet me 05:45 surely there had not been left unto Nabal by the morning light 05:49 any that pisseth against the wall. So David received of her 05:55 hand that which she had brought him, and said unto her, Go up 05:59 in peace to thine house; see, I have hearkened to thy voice, 06:03 and have accepted thy person. And Abigail came to Nabal; and, 06:09 behold he held a feast in his house, like the feast of a king; 06:12 and Nabal's heart was merry within him, for he was very 06:15 drunken: wherefore she told him nothing, less or more, until the 06:20 morning light. But it came to pass in the morning, when the 06:24 wine was gone out of Nabal, and his wife had told him these 06:27 things, that his heart died within him, and he became as 06:31 a stone. And it came to pass about ten days after, 06:36 that the Lord smote Nabal, that he died. And when David heard 06:41 that Nabal was dead, he said, Blessed be the Lord, that hath 06:44 pleaded the cause of my reproach from the hand of Nabal, and hath 06:48 kept his servant from evil: for the Lord hath returned the 06:52 wickedness of Nabal upon his own head. And David sent and 06:56 communed with Abigail, to take her to him to wife. 06:59 And when the servants of David were come to Abigail to Carmel, 07:04 they spake unto her, saying, David sent us unto thee, 07:08 to take thee to him to wife. And she arose, and bowed 07:13 herself on her face to the earth and said, Behold, let thine 07:18 handmaid be a servant to wash the feet of the servants 07:21 of my lord. And Abigail hasted, and arose, and rode upon an ass, 07:28 with five damsels of hers that went after her; and she went 07:32 after the messengers of David, and became his wife. 07:34 David also took Ahinoam of Jezreel; and they were also 07:40 both of them his wives. But Saul had given Michal his daughter, 07:45 David's wife, to Phalti the son of Laish, which was of Gallim. 07:49 We're continuing in 1st Samuel, chapter 26, 07:54 and this is the King James Version. 07:55 And the Ziphites came unto Saul to Gibeah, saying, 08:01 Doth not David hide himself in the hill of Hachilah, which is 08:04 before Jeshimon? Then Saul arose, and went down to the 08:09 wilderness of Ziph, having 3,000 chosen men of Israel with him, 08:13 to seek David in the wilderness of Ziph. And Saul pitched in the 08:18 hill of Hachilah, which is before Jeshimon, by the way. 08:21 But David abode in the wilderness and he saw that Saul 08:25 came after him into the wilderness. David therefore 08:29 sent out spies, and understood that Saul was come in very deed. 08:34 And David arose, and came to the place where Saul had pitched 08:38 and David beheld the place where Saul lay, and Abner, 08:42 the son of Ner, the captain of his host: and Saul lay in the 08:46 trench and the people pitched round about him. Then answered 08:50 David and said to Ahimelech the Hittite, and to Abishai 08:54 the son of Zeruiah, brother to Joab, saying, Who will go down 08:59 with me to Saul to the camp? And Abishai said, I will go down 09:04 with thee. So David and Abishai came to the people by night: 09:09 and behold, Saul lay sleeping within the trench, and his spear 09:14 stuck in the ground at his bolster: but Abner and the 09:17 people lay round about him. Then said Abishai to David, 09:21 God hath delivered thine enemy into thine hand this day: 09:24 now therefore let me smite him, I pray thee, with the spear even 09:29 to the earth at once, and I will not smite him the 2nd time. 09:31 And David said to Abishai Destroy him not: for who can 09:36 stretch forth his hand against the Lord's anointed, 09:39 and be guiltless? David said furthermore, As the Lord liveth, 09:43 the Lord shall smite him; or his day shall come to die; or 09:48 he shall descend into battle, and perish. The Lord forbid 09:52 that I should stretch forth mine hand against the Lord's anointed 09:55 but, I pray thee, take thou now the spear that is at his bolster 10:00 and the cruse of water, and let us go. So David took the spear 10:04 and the cruse of water from Saul's bolster; and they gat 10:07 them away, and no man saw it, nor knew it, neither awakened: 10:10 for they were all asleep; because a deep sleep 10:13 from the Lord was fallen upon them. 10:15 Then David went over to the other side, and stood on the top 10:18 of an hill afar off; a great space being between them: 10:22 And David cried to the people, and to Abner the son of Ner, 10:27 saying, Answerest thou not, Abner? Then Abner answered 10:32 and said, Who art thou that criest to the king? 10:34 And David said to Abner, Art not thou a valiant man? and who 10:40 is like to thee in Israel? wherefore then hast thou 10:44 not kept thy lord the king? for there came one of the people 10:48 in to destroy the king thy lord, This thing is not good that 10:52 thou hast done. As the Lord liveth, ye are worthy to die, 10:56 because ye have not kept your master, the Lord's anointed. 10:59 And now see where the king's spear is, and the cruse of 11:03 water that was at his bolster. And Saul knew David's voice, 11:09 and said, Is this thy voice, my son David? And David said, 11:14 It is my voice, my lord, O king. And he said, Wherefore doth my 11:21 Lord thus pursue after his servant? for what have I done? 11:25 or what evil is in mine hand? Now therefore, I pray thee, 11:30 let my lord the king hear the words of his servant. 11:32 If the Lord have stirred thee up against me, let him accept 11:37 an offering: but if they be the children of men, cursed be they 11:42 before the Lord; for they have driven me out this day from 11:46 abiding in the inheritance of the Lord, saying, Go serve other 11:49 gods. Now therefore, let not my blood fall to the earth before 11:54 the face of the Lord: for the king of Israel is come out 11:58 to seek a flea, as when one doth hunt a partridge 12:01 in the mountains. Then said Saul, I have sinned: 12:05 return, my son David: for I will no more do thee harm, 12:10 because my soul was precious in thine eyes this day: behold, I 12:16 have played the fool, and have erred exceedingly. And David 12:21 answered and said, Behold the king's spear! and let one of the 12:25 young men come over and fetch it. The Lord render to every 12:28 man his righteousness and his faithfulness: for the Lord 12:32 delivered thee into my hand today, but I would not stretch 12:36 forth my hand against the Lord's anointed. And behold as thy life 12:41 was much set by this day in mine eyes, so let my life 12:46 be much set by in the eyes of the Lord, and let him deliver me 12:50 out of all tribulation. Then Saul said to David, 12:55 Blessed be thou, my son David, thou shalt both do great things, 12:59 and also shalt still prevail. So David went on his way, 13:04 and Saul returned to his place. 13:06 We're continuing in the book of 1st Samuel, chapter 27, 13:10 and this is the King James Version. 13:12 And David said in his heart, I shall now perish one day 13:17 by the hand of Saul: there is nothing better for me 13:20 than that I should speedily escape into the land of the 13:22 the Philistines; and Saul shall despair of me, to seek me 13:26 any more in any coast of Israel: so shall I escape out of his 13:29 hand. And David arose, and he passed over with the 600 men 13:33 that were with him unto Achish, the son of Maoch, king of Gath. 13:37 And David dwelt with Achish at Gath, he and his men, every man 13:42 with his household, even David with his two wives, 13:46 Ahinoam the Jezreelitess, and Abigail the Carmelitess, 13:50 Nabal's wife. And it was told Saul that David was fled to Gath 13:54 and he sought no more again for him. 13:56 And David said unto Achish, If I have now found grace in thine 14:01 eyes, let them give me a place in some town in the country, 14:04 that I may dwell there: for why should thy servant dwell 14:07 in the royal city with thee? Then Achish gave him Ziklag 14:11 that day: wherefore Ziklag pertaineth unto the kings of 14:15 of Judah unto this day. And the time that David dwelt in the 14:19 country of the Philistines was a full year and four months. 14:23 Thank you for joining with me today to read the word of God. 14:27 Until next time, may God keep us all by His grace 14:31 and his mercy. Thank you and God bless. |
