00:17 Hello and welcome to His words are life.
00:18 I'm Kelly Mowrer and today we're going to be reading in the book 00:22 of 1st Samuel and the story of David as he has fled from Saul. 00:27 But before we start, let's pray together. Dear Lord as we read 00:32 in your word the story of your servant David, may his prayer be 00:36 ours. Open our eyes that we can see wondrous things 00:40 in your law and in the word that you have left for us here. 00:44 Be with us to guide us and to teach us. We love you so much 00:47 and thank you for loving us. Amen. 00:49 We're reading in 1st Samuel, chapter 27, beginning with verse 00:55 8, and this is the King James Version. 00:57 And David and his men went up and invaded the Geshurites, 01:02 and the Gezrites, and the Amalekites: for those nations 01:05 were of old the inhabitants of the land, as thou goest to Shur, 01:09 even unto the land of Egypt. And David smote the land, 01:13 and left neither man nor woman alive, and took away the sheep, 01:17 and the oxen and the asses, and the camels, and the apparel, 01:20 and returned, and came to Achish. And Achish said, 01:25 Whither have ye made a road today? And David said, Against 01:29 the south of Judah, and against the south of the Jerahmeelites, 01:33 and against the south of the Kenites. And David saved neither 01:37 man nor woman alive, to bring tidings to Gath, saying, 01:41 Lest they should tell on us, saying, So did David, 01:44 and so will be his manner all the while he dwelleth in the 01:48 country of the Philistines. And Achish believed David, 01:51 saying, He hath made his people Israel utterly to abhor him; 01:55 therefore he shall be my servant forever. 01:58 Continuing now in 1st Samuel, chapter 28. 02:02 This is the King James Version. 02:03 And it came to pass in those days that the Philistines 02:07 gathered their armies together for warfare to fight with Israel 02:10 and Achish said unto David, Know thou assuredly, 02:15 that thou shalt go out with me to battle, thou and thy men. 02:18 And David said to Achish, Surely thou shalt know what thy servant 02:24 can do. And Achish said to David, Therefore will I make 02:27 the keeper of mine head for ever. Now Samuel was dead 02:31 and all Israel had lamented him, and buried him in Ramah, 02:34 even in his own city. And Saul had put away those that had 02:39 familiar spirits, and the wizards, out of the land. 02:41 And the Philistines gathered themselves together, and came 02:45 and pitched in Shunem: and Saul gathered all Israel together, 02:49 and they pitched in Gilboa. And when Saul saw the host of the 02:55 Philistines, he was afraid, and his heart greatly trembled. 02:59 And when Saul inquired of the Lord, the Lord answered him not, 03:04 neither by dreams, nor by Urim, nor by prophets. Then said Saul 03:11 unto hi servants, Seek me a woman that hath a familiar 03:15 spirit that I may go to her and inquire of her. And his servants 03:19 said to him, Behold, there is a woman that hath a familiar 03:22 spirit at Endor. And Saul disguised himself, 03:25 and put on other raiment, and he went, and two men with him, 03:28 and they came to the woman by night: and he said, I pray thee, 03:32 divine unto me by the familiar spirit, and bring me him up, 03:37 whom I shall name unto thee. And the woman said unto him, 03:41 Behold, thou knowest what Saul hath done, how he hath cut off 03:45 those that have familiar spirits. and the wizards, 03:47 out of the land: wherefore then layest thou a snare for my life, 03:51 to cause me to die? And Saul sware to her by the Lord, 03:55 saying, As the Lord liveth, there shall no punishment happen 03:58 to thee for this thing. Then said the woman, Whom shall 04:03 I bring up unto thee? And he said, Bring me up Samuel. 04:07 And when the woman saw Samuel, she cried with a loud voice: 04:12 And the woman spake to Saul, saying, Why hast thou deceived 04:15 m? for thou art Saul. And the king said unto her, Be not 04:19 afraid" for what sawest thou? And the woman said unto Saul, 04:23 I saw gods ascending out of the earth. And he said unto her, 04:28 What form is he of? And she said, And old man cometh up; 04:32 and he is covered with a mantle. And Saul perceived that it was 04:36 Samuel and he stooped with his face to the ground, and 04:39 bowed himself. And Samuel said to Saul, Why has thou disquieted 04:45 me to bring me up? And Saul answered, I am sore distressed; 04:50 for the Philistines make war against me, and God is departed 04:54 from me and answereth me no more neither by prophets, 04:57 nor by dreams: therefore I have called thee, that thou mayest 05:01 make known unto me what I shall do. Then said Samuel, Wherefore 05:07 then dost thou ask of me, seeing the Lord is departed from thee, 05:11 and has become thine enemy? And the Lord hath done to him, 05:15 as he spake by me: for the Lord hath rent the kingdom 05:18 out of thine hand, and given it to they neighbor, even to David: 05:21 Because thou obeyedst not the voice of the Lord, 05:24 nor executest his fierce wrath upon Amalek, therefore hath 05:29 the Lord done this thing unto thee this day. Moreover the Lord 05:33 will also deliver Israel with thee into the hand of the 05:35 Philistines: and tomorrow shalt thou and thy sons be with me: 05:40 the Lord also shall deliver the host of Israel into the hand of 05:44 the Philistines. Then Saul fell straightway all along on the 05:48 earth, and was sore afraid, because of the words of Samuel: 05:51 and there was no strength in him; for he had eaten no bread 05:54 all the day, nor all the night. And the woman came unto Saul, 05:58 and saw that he was sore troubled, and said unto him, 06:01 Behold, thine handmaid hath obeyed thy voice, and I have put 06:05 my life in my hand, and have hearkened unto thy words 06:07 which thou spakest unto me. Now therefore, I pray thee, hearken 06:12 now also unto the voice of thine handmaid, and let me 06:16 set a morsel of bread before thee: and eat, that thou mayest 06:20 have strength, when thou goest on thy way. But he refused 06:25 and said, I will not eat. But his servants, together with 06:29 the woman, compelled him; and he hearkened unto their voice. 06:31 So he arose from the earth, and sat upon the bed. And the woman 06:35 had a fat calf in the house; and she hasted, and killed it, 06:39 and took flour and kneaded it, and did bake unleavened bread 06:41 thereof: And she brought it before Saul, and before his 06:45 servants; and they did eat. Then they rose up, 06:47 and went away that night. 06:49 We're continuing in the book of 1st Samuel, chapter 29 06:53 and this is the King James Version. 06:54 Now the Philistines gathered together all their armies, 06:59 to Aphek: and the Israelites pitched by a fountain which 07:02 is in Jezreel. And the lords of the Philistines passed on by 07:05 hundreds, and by thousands: But David and his men 07:09 passed on in the rereward with Achish. Then said the princes 07:14 of the Philistines, What do these Hebrews here? 07:17 And Achish said unto the princes of the Philistines, Is not this 07:21 David, the servant of Saul the king of Israel which hath been 07:24 with me these days, or these years, and I have found no fault 07:28 in him since he fell unto me unto this day? 07:30 And the princes of the Philistines were wroth with 07:33 him; and the princes of the Philistines said unto him, 07:36 Make this fellow return, that he may go again to his place 07:39 which thou has appointed him, and let him not go down with us 07:43 to battle, lest in the battle he be an adversary to us: 07:47 for wherewith should he reconcile himself unto his 07:49 master? should it not be with the heads of these men? 07:53 Is not this David, of whom they sang one to another in dances, 07:57 saying Saul slew his thousands, and David his ten thousands? 08:00 Then Achish called David, and said unto him, Surely, 08:04 as the Lord liveth, thou hast been upright, and thy going out 08:07 and thy coming in with me in the host is good in my sight: 08:11 for I have not found evil in thee since the day of thy coming 08:15 unto me unto this day: nevertheless the lords 08:18 favor the not. Wherefore now, return, and go in peace, 08:23 that thou displease not the lords of the Philistines. 08:26 And David said unto Achish, But what have I done? and what hast 08:31 thou found in the servant so long as I have been with thee 08:34 unto this day, that I may not go fight against the enemies 08:37 of my lord the king? And Achish answered and said to David, 08:40 I know that thou are good in my sight, as an angel of God: 08:44 notwithstanding the princes of the Philistines have said, 08:48 He shall not go up with us to the battle. Wherefore now 08:52 rise up early in the morning, with thy master's servants 08:55 that are come with thee: and as soon as ye be up early 08:59 in the morning, and have light, depart. So David and his men 09:03 rose up early to depart in the morning, to return into the land 09:06 of the Philistines. And the Philistines went up to Jezreel. 09:10 We're continuing in 1st Samuel, chapter 30, 09:13 and this is the King James Version. 09:15 And it came to pass, when David and his men were come to Ziklag, 09:20 on the third day, that the Amalekites had invaded the south 09:24 and Ziklag, and smitten Ziklag, and burned it with fire; 09:27 And had taken the women captives, that were therein: 09:30 they slew not any, either great or small, but carried them away, 09:34 and went on their way. So David and his men came to the city, 09:38 and behold, it was burned with fire: and their wives, and their 09:43 sons and their daughters, were taken captives. Then David 09:46 and the people that were with him lifted up their voice and 09:49 wept, until they had no more power to weep. And David's 09:53 two wives were taken captives, Ahinoam, the Jezreelitess, 09:58 and Abigail the wife of Nabal the Carmelite. 10:01 And David was greatly distressed for the people spake 10:05 of stoning him, because the soul of all the people was grieved, 10:09 every man for his sons and for his daughters: 10:11 but David encouraged himself in the Lord his God. 10:16 And David said to Abiathar the priest, Ahimelech's son, 10:21 I pray thee, bring me hither the ephod. And Abiathar brought 10:25 thither the ephod to David. And David inquired at the Lord, 10:29 saying, Shall I pursue after this troop? shall I overtake 10:34 them, And he answered him, Pursue: for thou shalt surely 10:39 overtake them, and without fail recover all. So David went, 10:43 he and the six hundred men that were with him, and came to the 10:47 brook Besor, where those that were left behind stayed. 10:50 But David pursued, he and 400 men: for 200 abode behind, 10:55 which were so faint that they could not go over the brook 10:58 Besor. And they found an Egyptian in the field, and 11:02 brought him to David, and gave him bread, and he did eat; 11:04 and they made him drink water; And they gave him a piece of a 11:08 cake of figs, and two clusters of raisins: and when he had 11:11 eaten, his spirit came again to him for he had eaten no bread, 11:15 nor drunk any water, three days and three nights. 11:19 And David said unto him, To whom belongest thou? 11:23 and whence art thou? And he said, I am a young man of Egypt, 11:28 servant to an Amalekite; and my master left me, because 3 days 11:32 agone I fell sick. We made an invasion upon the south of the 11:37 Cherethites, and upon the coast which belongeth to Judah, 11:41 and upon the south of Caleb; and we burned Ziklag with fire. 11:45 And David said to him, Canst thou bring me down to this 11:48 company? And he said, Swear unto me by God, that thou wilt 11:53 neither kill me, nor deliver me into the hands of my master, 11:56 and I will bring thee down to this company. 11:58 And when he had brought him down, behold, they were spread 12:02 abroad upon all the earth, eating and drinking, and 12:05 dancing because of all the great spoil that they had taken 12:08 out of the land of the Philistines, and out of the land 12:10 of Judah. And David smote them from the twilight even unto the 12:15 evening of the next day: and there escaped not a man of them, 12:19 save 400 young men, which rode upon camels, and fled. 12:23 And David recovered all that the Amalekites had carried away: 12:28 and David rescued his two wives. And there was nothing lacking 12:31 to them, neither small nor, great neither sons 12:35 nor daughters, neither spoil, nor anything that they had taken 12:39 to them: David recovered all. And David took all the flocks 12:43 and the herds, which they drave before those other cattle, 12:46 and said, This is David's spoil and David came to the 200 men 12:50 which were so faint that they could not follow David, 12:52 whom they had made also to abide at the brook Besor: 12:55 and they went forth to meet David, and to meet the people 12:58 that were with him: and when David came near to the people, 13:00 he saluted them. Then answered all the wicked men and men of 13:04 Belial, of those that went with David and said, 13:07 Because they went not with us, we will not give them aught 13:11 of the spoil that we have recovered, save to every man 13:14 his wife and his children, that they may lead them away, 13:17 and depart. Then said David, Ye shall not do so, my brethren, 13:22 with that which the Lord hath given us, who hath preserved us, 13:25 and delivered the company that came against us into our hand. 13:29 For who will hearken unto you in this matter? but as his part is 13:33 that goeth down to the battle, so shall his part be that 13:37 tarrieth by the stuff: they shall part alike. 13:40 And it was so from that day forward, that he made it a 13:44 statute and an ordinance for Israel unto this day. 13:47 And when David came to Ziklag, he sent of the spoil unto the 13:51 elders of Judah, even to his friends, saying, 13:53 Behold a present for you of the spoil of the enemies of the Lord 13:58 To them which were in Bethel and to them which were in south 14:01 Ramoth, and to them which were in Jattir, and to them which 14:04 were in Aroer, and them which were in Siphmoth, and to them 14:07 which were in Eshtemoa, and to them which were in Rachal, and 14:10 to them which were in the cities of the Jerahmeelites, 14:13 and to them which were in the cities of the Kenites, 14:15 and to them which were in Hormah, and to them which 14:17 were in Chorashan, and to them which were in Athach, 14:20 and to them which were in Hebron, and to all the places 14:23 where David himself and his men were wont to haunt. 14:27 Thank you for being with me today and please join us 14:30 again when we read next in 1st Samuel. 14:32 God Bless and goodbye. |
