00:17 Hello, and welcome to His Words are Life.
00:19 I'm Kelly Mowrer and today we're going to read together in the
00:23 book of 1st Kings. And we're starting with the story of
00:26 the reign of King Solomon, the wisest man who ever lived.
00:29 Before we begin to read, let's pray together.
00:31 Dear God, we ask for you to send your wisdom to our ears
00:38 through this story. Help us to hear, not just with our ears,
00:42 but with our hearts also. Create in us clean hearts,
00:46 and then give us your wisdom to live according to your will.
00:49 We love you so much and thank you for loving us. Amen.
00:52 We're beginning in 1st Kings, chapter 2, with verse 11,
00:58 and this is the King James Version.
01:00 And the days that David reigned over Israel were forty years:
01:05 7 years reigned he in Hebron, and 30 and 3 years
01:09 reigned he in Jerusalem. Then sat Solomon upon the throne
01:14 of David his father; and his kingdom was established greatly.
01:17 And Adonijah the son of Haggith came to Bathsheba the mother of
01:22 Solomon. And she said, Comest thou peaceably?
01:26 And he said, Peaceably. He said moreover, I have somewhat to say
01:31 unto thee. And she said, Say on. And he said, Thou knowest that
01:37 the kingdom was mine, and that all Israel set their faces on me
01:41 that I should reign: howbeit the kingdom is turned about, and is
01:45 become my brother's: for it was his from the Lord.
01:47 And now I ask one petition of thee, deny me not.
01:52 And she said unto him, Say on. And he said, Speak, I pray thee
01:58 unto Solomon the king, for he will not say thee nay,
02:02 that he give me Abishag the Shunamite to wife.
02:07 And Bathsheba said, Well; I will speak for thee unto the king.
02:12 Bathsheba therefore went unto king Solomon, to speak unto him
02:16 for Adonijah. And the king rose up to meet her, and bowed
02:20 himself unto her, and sat down on his throne, and caused a seat
02:23 to be set for the king's mother; and she sat on his right hand.
02:27 Then she said I desire one small petition of thee: I pray thee,
02:33 say me not nay. And the king said unto her, Ask on, my mother
02:38 for I will not say thee nay. And she said, Let Abishag
02:44 the Shunamite be given to Adonijah thy brother to wife.
02:48 And King Solomon answered and said unto his mother, And why
02:53 dost thou ask Abishag the Shunamite for Adonijah?
02:56 ask for him the kingdom also; for he is mine elder brother;
03:00 even for him, and for Abiathar the priest, and for Joab the son
03:03 of Zeruiah. Then king Solomon sware by the Lord, saying,
03:08 God do so to me, and more also, if Adonijah have not spoken
03:11 this word against his own life. Now therefore as the Lord liveth
03:16 which hath established me, and set me on the throne of David my
03:19 father, and who hath made me an house, as he promised,
03:22 Adonijah shall be put to death this day. And king Solomon
03:27 sent by the hand of Benaiah the son of Jehoiada: and he fell
03:30 upon him that he died. And unto Abiathar the priest
03:34 said the king, Get thee to Anathoth, unto thine own fields;
03:38 for thou art worthy of death: but I will not at this time
03:42 put thee to death, because thou bearest the ark of the Lord God
03:46 before David, my Father, and because thou hast been afflicted
03:49 in all wherein my father was afflicted. So Solomon thrust
03:54 out Abiathar from being priest unto the Lord; that he might
03:58 fulfill the word of the Lord, which he spake concerning
04:01 the house of Eli in Shiloh. Then tidings came to Joab:
04:06 for Joab had turned after Adonijah, though he turned
04:09 not after Absalom. And Joab fled unto the tabernacle of the Lord,
04:14 and caught hold on the horns of the altar. And it was told king
04:18 Solomon that Joab was fled unto the tabernacle of the Lord;
04:21 and, behold, he is by the altar. Then Solomon sent Benaiah
04:25 the son of Jehoiada, saying, Go, fall upon him.
04:29 And Benaiah came to the tabernacle of the Lord,
04:32 and said unto him, Thus saith the king, Come forth.
04:35 And he said, Nay; but I will die here. And Benaiah brought the
04:40 king word again, saying, Thus said Joab, and thus he answered
04:45 me. And the king said unto him, Do as he hath said, and fall
04:49 upon him, and bury him; that thou mayest take away the
04:51 innocent blood, which Joab shed, from me, and from the house of
04:54 my father. And the Lord shall return his blood upon his own
04:57 head, who fell upon two men more righteous and better than he,
05:01 and slew them with the sword, my father David not knowing thereof
05:06 to wit, Abner the son of Ner, captain of the host of Israel,
05:10 and Amasa, the son of Jether, captain of the host of Judah.
05:13 Their blood shall therefore return upon the head of Joab,
05:17 and upon the head of his seed forever; but upon David,
05:21 and upon his seed, and upon his house and upon his throne, shall
05:25 there be peace for ever from the Lord.
05:26 So Benaiah the son of Jehoiada went up, and fell upon him,
05:31 and slew him: and he was buried in his own house
05:34 in the wilderness. And the king put Benaiah the son of Jehoiada
05:38 in his room over the host: and Zadok the priest did the king
05:43 put in the room of Abiathar. And the king sent and called
05:47 for Shimei, and said unto him, Build thee an house in Jerusalem
05:51 and dwell there, and go not forth thence any whither.
05:56 For it shall be, that on the day that thou goest out,
06:00 and passest over the brook Kidron, thou shalt know for
06:04 certain that thou shalt surely die: thy blood shall be upon
06:08 thine own head. And Shimei said unto the king, The saying is
06:13 good: as my lord the king hath said, so will thy servant do.
06:17 And Shimei dwelt in Jerusalem many days. And it came to pass
06:22 at the end of three years, that two of the servants of Shimei
06:26 ran away unto Achish, son of Maachah, king of Gath.
06:31 And they told Shimei, saying, Behold, thy servants be in Gath.
06:36 And Shimei arose, and saddled his ass, and went to Gath
06:40 to Achish to seek his servants: and Shimei went, and brought
06:44 his servants from Gath. And it was told Solomon that Shimei
06:49 had gone from Jerusalem to Gath, and was come again. And the king
06:52 sent and called for Shimei, and said unto him, Did I not make
06:56 thee to swear by the Lord, and protested unto thee, saying,
07:00 Know for a certain, on the day thou goest out, and walkest
07:04 abroad any whither, that thou shalt surely die? and thou
07:08 saidst unto me, The word that I have heard is good.
07:11 Why then hast thou not kept the oath of the Lord,
07:14 and the commandment that I have charged thee with?
07:17 The king said moreover to Shimei, Thou knowest all the
07:21 wickedness which thine heart is privy to, that thou didst
07:25 to David my father: therefore the Lord shall return thy
07:28 wickedness upon thine own head; And king Solomon shall be
07:32 blessed, and the throne of David shall be established before
07:35 the Lord for ever. So the king commanded Benaiah, the son of
07:39 Jehoiada; which went out, and fell upon him, that he died
07:43 And the kingdom was established in the hand of Solomon.
07:47 We're continuing in the book of 1st Kings, chapter 3,
07:51 and this is the King James Version.
07:53 And Solomon made affinity with Pharaoh king of Egypt,
07:58 and took Pharaoh's daughter, and brought her into the city
08:01 of David, until he had made an end of building his own house,
08:05 and the house of the Lord, and the wall of Jerusalem round
08:07 about. Only the people sacrificed in high places,
08:11 because there was no house built unto the name of the Lord,
08:13 until those days. And Solomon loved the Lord, walking in the
08:18 statutes of David his father: only he sacrificed and burnt
08:23 incense in high places. And the king went to Gibeon
08:26 to sacrifice there; for that was the great high place:
08:29 a thousand burnt offerings did Solomon offer upon that altar.
08:33 In Gibeon the Lord appeared to Solomon in a dream by night:
08:37 And God said, Ask what I shall give thee. And Solomon said,
08:43 Thou hast showed unto thy servant David my father
08:46 great mercy, according as he walked before thee in truth,
08:50 and in righteousness, and in uprightness of heart with thee;
08:52 and thou hast kept for him this great kindness, that thou hast
08:56 given him a son to sit on his throne, as it is this day.
09:00 And now, O Lord my God, thou hast made thy servant king
09:06 instead of David my father: and I am but a little child:
09:09 I know not how to go out or to come in. And thy servant
09:13 is in the midst of thy people which thou hast chosen,
09:16 a great people, that cannot be numbered nor counted
09:19 for multitude. Give therefore thy servant an understanding
09:23 heart to judge thy people, that I may discern between good and
09:28 bad: for who is able to judge this thy so great a people?
09:33 And the speech pleased the Lord, that Solomon had asked
09:37 this thing. And God said unto him, Because thou hast asked
09:41 this thing, and hast not asked for thyself long life; neither
09:45 hast asked riches for thyself, nor hast asked the life of thine
09:48 enemies: but hast asked for thyself understanding
09:52 to discern judgment; Behold, I have done according to thy words
09:57 lo, I have given thee a wise and an understanding heart;
10:01 so that there was none like thee before thee, neither
10:05 after thee shall any arise like unto thee. And I have also given
10:10 thee that which thou hast not asked, both riches, and honor:
10:14 so that there shall not be any among the kings like unto thee
10:18 all thy days. And if thou wilt walk in my ways, to keep my
10:24 statutes and my commandments, as thy father David did walk,
10:27 then I will lengthen thy days. And Solomon awoke; And behold
10:32 it was a dream. And he came to Jerusalem, and stood
10:35 before the ark of the covenant of the Lord, and offered up
10:38 burnt offerings, and offered peace offerings, and made a
10:40 feast to all his servants. Then came there two women,
10:45 that were harlots, unto the king and stood before him.
10:49 And the one woman said, O my lord, I and this woman dwell
10:53 in one house; and I was delivered of a child with her
10:57 in the house. And it came to pass the third day after
11:01 that I was delivered, that this woman was delivered also:
11:04 and we were together; there was no stranger with us
11:08 in the house save we two in the house. And this woman's child
11:12 died in the night; because she overlaid it. And she arose
11:17 at midnight, and took my son from beside me,
11:20 while thine handmaid slept, and laid it in her bosom, and laid
11:24 her dead child in my bosom. And when I rose in the morning
11:28 to give my child suck, behold, it was dead: but when I had
11:32 considered it in the morning, behold, it was not my son,
11:35 which I did bear. And the other woman said, Nay; but the living
11:39 is my son, and the dead is thy son. And this said, No; but the
11:44 dead is thy son, and the living is my son. Thus they spake
11:47 before the king. Then said the king, the one saith,
11:52 This is my son that liveth, and thy son is the dead:
11:56 and the other saith, Nay; but thy son is the dead, and my son
12:01 is the living. And the King said, Bring me a sword.
12:05 And they brought a sword before the king. And the king said,
12:09 Divide the living child in two, and give half to the one,
12:14 and half to the other. Then spake the woman whose
12:19 the living child was unto the king, for her bowels yearned
12:23 upon her son, and she said, O my lord, give her the living
12:26 child, and in no wise slay it. But the other said, Let it be
12:32 neither mine nor thine, but divide it. Then the king
12:36 answered and said, Give her the living child, and in no wise
12:39 slay it: she is the mother thereof. And all Israel heard
12:44 of the judgment which the king had judged; and they feared
12:47 the king: for they saw that the wisdom of God was in him,
12:49 to do judgment. We're reading now
12:54 in 1st Kings, chapter 4, this is the King James Version.
12:59 So King Solomon was king over all Israel. And these were the
13:04 princes which he had; and there follows a long list of
13:07 names. We're going to skip past that, and we're going to pick
13:10 it up in 1st Kings 4, verse 20. Judah and Israel were many,
13:16 as the sand which is by the sea in multitude, eating and
13:20 drinking and making merry. And Solomon reigned over all
13:23 kingdoms from the river unto the land of the Philistines,
13:26 and unto the border of Egypt: they brought presents,
13:28 and served Solomon all the days of his life. And Solomon's
13:32 provision for one day was 30 measures of fine flour,
13:35 and threescore measures of meal, 10 fat oxen, and 20 oxen out of
13:39 the pastures, and an hundred sheep, beside harts,
13:43 and roebucks, and fallowdeer, and fatted fowl.
13:46 For he had dominion over all the region on this side
13:49 of the river, from Tiphsah even to Azzah, over all the kings
13:53 on this side the river: and he had peace on all sides
13:56 round about him. And Judah and Israel dwelt safely, every man
14:01 under his vine and under his fig tree, from Dan even to
14:04 Beersheba, all the days of Solomon. And Solomon had 40,000
14:09 stalls of horses for his chariots, and 12,000 horsemen.
14:13 And those officers provided victual for king Solomon,
14:15 and for all that came unto king Solomon's table, every man
14:19 in his month: they lacked nothing.
14:21 Thank you for joining with me today to read the word of God,
14:25 and may God give us the wisdom that he blessed Solomon with,
14:30 that we may love him with all of our hearts and serve him
14:33 all our days. Goodbye.
