00:15 Hello, and welcome to His Words are Life.
00:17 I'm Kelly Mowrer, and we'll be reading today in the book of
00:20 2nd Kings, were reading the stories of the years of the time
00:25 the kings reigned over Israel and Judah. And some of the kings
00:29 followed the Lord with all their heart and others did not.
00:32 but I've taken note in several instances where even the king's
00:35 who were following after God and obeying his commandments,
00:38 many times the phrase, But they did not remove the high places,
00:42 where they still sacrificed in the high places, that has become
00:46 part of the story. In other words, the king did not wholly
00:48 commit to following the Lord. Before we begin, let's pray
00:51 together. Dear God, help us to learn from these stories
00:56 the lessons you have for us, including the lesson that
01:01 we must completely submit our lives to you, not just partly
01:06 but in all of the high places of our heart, tear down anything
01:11 that stands between us and who you would have us to be.
01:15 Please send your Holy Spirit now to bring understanding as we
01:18 hear your word. We love you so much and thank you for loving us
01:21 Amen. We're continuing in 2nd Kings, chapter 13,
01:26 picking up in verse 7, and this is the King James Version.
01:29 Neither did he leave of the people to Jehoahaz,
01:34 but 50 horsemen and 10 chariots, and 10,000 footmen;
01:37 for the king of Syria had destroyed them,
01:39 and had made them like the dust by threshing.
01:42 Now the rest of the acts of Jehoahaz, and all that he did,
01:46 and his might, are they not written in the book of the
01:49 chronicles of the kings of Israel? And Jehoahaz slept with
01:53 his fathers; and they buried him in Samaria: and Joash his son
01:57 reigned in his stead. In the thirty and seventh year of Joash
02:01 king of Judah began Jehoash the son of Jehoahaz to reign over
02:07 Israel in Samaria, and reigned 16 years. And he did that which
02:12 was evil in the sight of the Lord; he departed not from all
02:15 the sins of Jeroboam, the son of Nebat, who made Israel sin:
02:19 but he walked therein. And the rest of the acts of Joash
02:23 and all that he did, and his might wherewith he fought
02:27 against Amaziah king of Judah, are they not written in the book
02:30 of the chronicles of the kings of Israel? And Joash slept with
02:35 his fathers; and Jeroboam sat upon his throne: and Joash was
02:39 buried in Samaria with the kings of Israel.
02:42 Now Elisha was fallen sick of his sickness whereof he died.
02:47 And Joash the king of Israel came down unto him, and wept
02:51 over his face, and said, O my father, my father,
02:55 the chariot of Israel and the horseman thereof.
02:59 And Elisha said unto him, Take bow and arrows,
03:03 And he took unto him bow and arrows. And he said to the king
03:08 of Israel, Put thine hand upon the bow. And he put his hand
03:12 upon it: and Elisha put his hands upon the king's hands.
03:16 And he said, Open the window eastward. And he opened it.
03:20 Then Elisha said, Shoot. And he shot. And he said, The arrow of
03:26 the Lord's deliverance, and the arrow of deliverance from Syria:
03:30 for thou shalt smite the Syrians in Aphek, till thou have
03:34 consumed them. And he said, Take the arrows.
03:37 And he took them. And he said unto the king of Israel,
03:41 Smite upon the ground. And he smote thrice, and stayed.
03:45 And the man of God was wroth with him, and said,
03:48 Thou shouldest have smitten five or six times; then hadst thou
03:52 smitten Syria till thou hadst consumed it: whereas now
03:55 thou shalt smite Syria but thrice. And Elisha died,
04:00 and they buried him. And the bands of the Moabites invaded
04:03 the land at the coming in of the year. And it came to pass,
04:05 as they were burying a man, that behold, they spied a band
04:08 of men; and they cast the man into the sepulchre of Elisha:
04:12 and when the man was let down, and touched the bones of Elisha,
04:15 he revived and stood up on his feet. But Hazael king of Syria
04:21 oppressed Israel all the days of Jehoahaz. And the Lord was
04:26 gracious unto them, and had compassion on them,
04:28 and had respect unto them, because of his covenant
04:30 with Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, and would not destroy them,
04:35 neither cast he them from his presence as yet. So Hazael
04:39 king of Syria died; and Benhadad his son reigned
04:43 in his stead. And Jehoash the son of Jehoahaz, took again
04:48 out of the hand of Benhadad the son of Hazael the cities,
04:51 which he had taken out of the hand of Jehoahaz his father
04:53 by war. Three times did Joash beat him, and recovered
04:58 the cities of Israel. We're continuing with 2nd Kings
05:02 chapter 14, and this is the King James Version.
05:05 In the second year of Joash son of Jehoahaz king of Israel
05:11 reigned Amaziah the son of Joash king of Judah.
05:14 He was twenty and five years old when he began to reign, and
05:18 reigned twenty and nine years in Jerusalem. And his mother's
05:21 name was Jehoaddan of Jerusalem. And he did that which was right
05:27 in the sight of the Lord, yet not like David his father:
05:31 He did according to all things as Joash his father did.
05:35 Howbeit the high places were not taken away: as yet the people
05:42 did sacrifice and burnt incense on the high places.
05:45 And it came to pass, as soon as the kingdom was confirmed
05:50 in his hand, that he slew his servants which had slain the
05:53 king his father. But the children of the murderers
05:57 he slew not: according unto that which is written in the book
06:00 of the law of Moses, wherein the Lord commanded, saying,
06:03 The fathers shall not be put to death for the children,
06:06 nor the children be put to death for the fathers;
06:09 but every man shall be put to death for his own sin.
06:12 He slew of Edom in the valley of salt, 10,000, and took Selah
06:17 by war, and called the name of it Joktheel unto this day.
06:21 Then Amaziah sent messengers to Jehoash, the son of Jehoahaz
06:27 son of Jehu, king of Israel, saying, Come, let us look
06:31 one another in the face. And Jehoash the king of Israel
06:35 sent to Amaziah king of Judah, saying, The thistle that was in
06:39 Lebanon sent to the cedar that was in Lebanon sent to the cedar
06:41 that was in Lebanon, saying, Give thy daughter to my son
06:45 to wife: and there passed by a wild beast that was in Lebanon,
06:49 and trode down the thistle. Thou hast indeed smitten Edom,
06:54 and thine heart hath lifted thee up: glory of this, and tarry at
06:58 home: for why shouldest thou meddle to thy hurt,
07:02 that thou shouldest fall, even thou, and Judah with thee?
07:05 But Amaziah would not hear. Therefore Jehoash king of Israel
07:11 went up; and he and Amaziah king of Judah looked one another
07:14 in the face at Bethshemesh, which belongeth to Judah.
07:18 And Judah was put to the worse before Israel; and they fled
07:22 every man to their tents. And Jehoash king of Israel took
07:27 Amaziah king of Judah, the son of Jehoash the son of Ahaziah,
07:31 at Bethshemesh and came to Jerusalem, and brake down the
07:35 wall of Jerusalem from the gate of Ephraim unto the corner gate,
07:39 400 cubits. And he took all the gold and silver, and all the
07:44 vessels that were found in the house of the Lord,
07:46 and in the treasures of the king's house, and hostages,
07:49 and returned to Samaria. Now the rest of the acts of Jehoash
07:54 which he did, and his might, and how he fought with Amaziah
07:58 king of Judah, are they not written in the book of the
08:01 chronicles of the kings of Israel? And Jehoash slept
08:06 with his fathers, and was buried in Samaria with the kings of
08:08 Israel; and Jeroboam his son reigned in his stead.
08:12 And Amaziah the son of Joash king of Judah lived after the
08:18 death of Jehoash son of Jehoahaz king of Israel, fifteen years.
08:23 And the rest of the acts of Amaziah, are they not written
08:27 in the book of the chronicles of the kings of Judah?
08:31 Now they made a conspiracy against him in Jerusalem:
08:35 and he fled to Lachish;
08:37 but they sent after him to Lachish, and slew him there.
08:40 And they brought him on horses and he was buried at Jerusalem
08:44 with his fathers in the city of David. And all the people of
08:48 Judah took Azariah, which was 16 years old, and made him king
08:52 instead of his father Amaziah, He built Elath, and restored it
08:57 to Judah, after that the king slept with his fathers.
09:00 in the 15th year of Amaziah the son of Joash king of Judah,
09:04 Jeroboam the son of Joash king of Israel began to reign in
09:08 Samaria, and reigned forty and one years. And he did that which
09:13 was evil in the sight of the Lord: he departed not
09:16 from all the sins of Jeroboam the son of Nebat,
09:19 who made Israel to sin. He restored the coast of Israel
09:22 from the entering of Hamath unto the sea of the plain, according
09:26 to the word of the Lord God of Israel, which he spake by the
09:29 hand of his servant Jonah, the son of Amittai, the prophet,
09:33 which was of Gathhepher. For the Lord saw the affliction
09:37 of Israel, that it was very bitter: for there was not any
09:41 shut up, nor any left, nor any helper for Israel. And the Lord
09:46 said not that he would blot out the name of Israel from under
09:49 heaven: but he saved them by the hand of Jeroboam the son of
09:53 Joash. Now the rest of the acts of Jeroboam and all that he did,
09:57 and his might, how he warred, and how he recovered Damascus,
10:02 and Hamath, which belonged to Judah, for Israel, are they not
10:06 written in the book of the chronicles of the kings
10:08 of Israel? And Jeroboam slept with his fathers, even with the
10:12 kings of Israel; and Zachariah his son reigned in his stead.
10:17 We're continuing now in 2nd Kings, chapter fifteen,
10:21 And this is the King James Version.
10:22 In the twenty and seventh year of Jeroboam king of Israel
10:27 began Azariah son of Amaziah king of Judah to reign.
10:32 Sixteen years old was he when he began to reign,
10:35 and he reigned two and fifty years in Jerusalem.
10:38 And his mother's name was Jecholiah of Jerusalem.
10:43 And he did that which was right in the sight of the Lord,
10:47 according to all that his father Amaziah had done;
10:51 Save that the high places were not removed:
10:54 The people sacrificed and burnt incense still on the high places
10:59 And the Lord smote the king, so that he was a leper unto the day
11:04 of his death, and dwelt in a several house. And Jotham
11:08 the king's son was over the house, judging the people of the
11:11 land. And the rest of the acts of Azariah, and all that he did,
11:16 are they not written in the book of the chronicles of the
11:19 kings of Judah? So Azariah slept with his fathers;
11:23 and they buried him with his fathers in the city of David:
11:26 and Jotham his son reigned in his stead.
11:29 In the thirty and eighth year of Azariah king of Judah
11:33 did Zachariah the son of Jeroboam reign over Israel
11:37 in Samaria six months. And he did that which was evil
11:41 in the sight of the Lord, as his fathers had done:
11:44 he departed not from the sins of Jeroboam the son of Nebat,
11:47 who made Israel to sin. And Shallum the son of Jabesh
11:51 conspired against him, and smote him before the people,
11:54 and slew him, and reigned in his stead.
11:57 And the rest of the acts of Zachariah, behold, they are
12:01 written in the book of the chronicles of the kings of
12:03 Israel. This was the word of the Lord which he spake unto Jehu,
12:08 saying, Thy sons shall sit on the throne of Israel unto the
12:12 fourth generation. And so it came to pass.
12:16 Shallum the son of Jabesh began to reign in the nine
12:20 and thirtieth year of Uzziah king of Judah; and he reigned
12:24 a full month in Samaria. For Menahem the son of Gadi
12:28 went up from Tirzah, and came to Samaria, and smote Shallum
12:32 the son of Jabesh in Samaria, and slew him, and he reigned
12:35 in his stead. And the rest of the acts of Shallum,
12:39 and his conspiracy which he made, behold, they are written
12:43 in the book of the chronicles of the kings of Israel.
12:45 Then Menahem smote Tiphsah, and all that were therein,
12:50 and the coasts thereof from Tirzah: because they opened not
12:53 to him, therefore he smote it; and all the women therein
12:57 that were with child he ripped up. In the nine and thirtieth
13:00 year of Azariah king of Judah began Menahem the son of Gadi
13:04 to reign over Israel, and reigned 10 years in Samaria.
13:07 And he did that which was evil in the sight of the Lord:
13:11 He departed not all his days from the sins of Jeroboam
13:15 the son of Nebat, who made Israel to sin.
13:17 And Pul the king of Assyria came against the land: and Menahem
13:23 gave Pul a thousand talents of silver, that his hand might be
13:26 with him to confirm the kingdom in his hand. And Menahem exacted
13:31 the money of Israel, even of all the mighty men of wealth,
13:33 of each man 50 shekels of silver to give to the king of Assyria.
13:38 So the king of Assyria turned back, and stayed not there
13:41 in the land. And the rest of the acts of Menahem,
13:44 and all that he did, are they not written in the book of
13:47 the chronicles of the kings of Israel? And Menahem slept
13:51 with his fathers; and Pekahiah his son reigned in his stead.
13:56 In the 50th year of Azariah king of Judah, Pekahiah the son of
14:01 Menaham began to reign over Israel in Samaria, and reigned
14:05 two years. And he did that which was evil in the sight of the
14:08 Lord: he departed not from the sins of Jeroboam the son of
14:12 Nebat, who made Israel to sin. But Pekah the son of Remaliah,
14:17 a captain of his, conspired against him, and smote him
14:20 in Samaria, in the palace of the king's house, with Argob and
14:24 Arieh, and with him 50 men of the Gileadites and he killed him
14:27 and reigned in his room. And the acts of Pekahiah, and all that
14:32 he did, behold they are written in the book of the chronicles
14:35 of the kings of Israel. Goodbye.
