00:16 Hello, and welcome to His Words are Life.
00:17 I'm Kelly Mowrer, and thank you for joining with me today 00:20 to read in 2nd Kings. Before we start, let's pray together. 00:25 Dear God, thank you again for an opportunity to come and to hear 00:30 your word. May it be not just something that we spend 00:35 15 minutes listening to and walk away and forget about; 00:40 but may it be something that the Holy Spirit plants in our 00:43 hearts, that changes our lives and allows us to be more useful 00:47 to you and a blessing to others. We love you so much and thank 00:51 you for loving us. Amen. We're reading in 2nd Kings, 00:55 chapter 23, beginning in verse 3, and this is 00:59 the King James Version. And the king stood by a pillar, 01:04 and made a covenant before the Lord, to walk after the Lord, 01:08 and to keep his commandments and his testimonies and his 01:11 statutes with all their heart and all their soul, to perform 01:16 the words of this covenant that were written in this book. 01:18 And all the people stood to the covenant. And the king commanded 01:23 Hilkiah the high priest, and the priests of the second order, 01:26 and the keepers of the door, to bring forth out of the temple of 01:29 the Lord all the vessels that were made for Baal, and for the 01:32 grove and for all the host of heaven: and he burned them 01:35 without Jerusalem in the fields of Kidron, and carried the ashes 01:39 of them unto Bethel. And he put down the idolatrous priests, 01:44 whom the kings of Judah had ordained to burn incense 01:47 in the high places in the cities of Judah, and in the places 01:50 round about Jerusalem; them also that burned incense unto Baal, 01:55 to the sun, and to moon and unto the planets, and to all the host 01:57 of heaven. And he brought out the grove from the house of the 02:01 Lord, without Jerusalem unto the brook Kidron, and burned it 02:04 at the brook Kidron, and stamped it small to powder, and cast the 02:08 powder thereof upon the graves of the children of the people. 02:11 And he brake down the houses of the sodomites, that were by the 02:15 house of the Lord, where the women wove hangings for the 02:19 grove. And he brought all the priests out of the cities of 02:22 Judah, and defiled the high places where the priests 02:25 had burned incense, from Geba to Beersheba, and brake down the 02:28 high places of the gates that were in the entering in of the 02:32 gate of Joshua the governor of the city, which were on a man's 02:35 left hand at the gate of the city. Nevertheless the priests 02:40 of the high places came not up to the altar of the Lord in 02:43 Jerusalem, but they did eat of the unleavened bread among 02:46 their brethren. And he defiled Topheth, which is in the valley 02:50 of the children of Hinnom, that no man might make his son or his 02:53 daughter to pass through the fire to Molech. And he took away 02:58 the horses that the kings of Judah had given to the sun, 03:00 at the entering in of the house of the Lord, by the chamber 03:04 of Nathanmelech the chamberlain, which was in the suburbs, 03:07 and burned the chariots of the sun with fire. And the altars 03:11 that were on the top of the upper chamber of Ahaz, 03:13 which the kings of Judah had made, and the altars which 03:16 Manasseh had made in the two courts of the house of the Lord, 03:19 did the king beat down, and brake them down from thence, 03:23 and cast the dust of them into the brook of Kidron. 03:27 And the high places that were before Jerusalem, which were 03:31 on the right hand of the mount of corruption, which Solomon 03:34 the king of Israel had builded for Ashtoreth the abomination 03:38 of the Zidonians, and for Chemosh the abomination of the 03:42 Moabites, and for Milcom the abomination of the children of 03:45 Ammon, did the king defile. And he brake in pieces the images, 03:49 and cut down the groves, and filled their places with the 03:54 bones of men. Moreover the altar that was at Bethel, 03:58 and the high place which Jeroboam the son of Nebat, 04:00 who made Israel to sin, had made, both that altar 04:04 and the high place, he brake down, and burned the high place, 04:08 and stamped it small to powder, and burned the grove. 04:12 And as Josiah turned himself, he spied the sepulchres 04:16 that were there in the mount, and sent, and took the bones 04:20 out of the sepulchres, and burned them upon the altar, 04:22 and polluted it, according to the word of the Lord which 04:25 the man of God proclaimed, who proclaimed these words. 04:28 Then he said, What title is that, that I see? 04:33 And the men of the city told him, It is the sepulchre of the 04:37 man of God, which came from Judah, and proclaimed these 04:40 things that thou hast done against the altar of Bethel. 04:42 And he said, Let him alone; let no man move his bones. 04:46 So they let his bones alone, with the bones of the prophet 04:50 that came out of Samaria, and all the houses also of the high 04:54 places that were in the cities of Samaria, which the kings of 04:57 Israel had made to provoke the Lord to anger, Josiah took away, 05:01 and did to them according to all the acts that he had done 05:04 in Bethel. And he slew all the priests of the high places 05:08 that were there upon the altars and burned men's bones upon them 05:12 and returned to Jerusalem. And the king commanded all the 05:16 people, saying, Keep the passover unto the Lord your God, 05:19 as it is written in the book of this covenant. 05:22 Surely there was not holden such a passover from the days 05:26 of the judges that judged Israel nor in all the days of the kings 05:29 of Israel, nor of the kings of Judah; but in the 18th year 05:34 of king Josiah, wherein this passover was holden to the Lord 05:38 in Jerusalem. Moreover the workers with familiar spirits, 05:42 and the wizards, and the images. and the idols, and all the 05:46 abominations that were spied in the land of Judah 05:48 and in Jerusalem, did Josiah put away, that he might perform 05:53 the words of the law which were written in the book that Hilkiah 05:57 the priest found in the house of the Lord. And like unto him 06:01 was there no king before him, that turned to the Lord 06:05 with all his heart, and with all his soul, and with all his might 06:10 according to all the law of Moses; neither after him 06:14 arose there any like him. Notwithstanding the Lord turned 06:18 not from the fierceness of his great wrath, wherewith his anger 06:22 was kindled against Judah, because of all the provocations 06:25 that Manasseh had provoked him withal. And the Lord said, 06:29 I will remove Judah also out of my sight, as I have removed 06:33 Israel, and will cast off this city Jerusalem which I have 06:37 chosen, and the house of which I said, My name shall be there. 06:39 Now the rest of the acts of Josiah, and all that he did, 06:44 are they not written in the book of the chronicles 06:46 of the kings of Judah? In his days Pharaoh-nechoh 06:51 king of Egypt went up against the king of Assyria to the river 06:55 Euphrates: and king Josiah went against him; and he slew 06:58 him at Megiddo, when he had seen him. And his servants 07:02 carried him in a chariot dead from Megiddo, and brought him 07:05 to Jerusalem, and buried him in his own sepulchre. 07:08 And the people of the land took Jehoahaz the son of Josiah, 07:11 and anointed him, and made him king in his father's stead. 07:15 Jehoahaz was twenty and three years old when he began to reign 07:19 and he reigned three months in Jerusalem. And his mother's 07:23 name was Hamutal, the daughter of Jeremiah of Libnah. 07:26 And he did that which was evil in the sight of the Lord, 07:30 according to all that his fathers had done. 07:32 And Pharaoh-nechoh put him in bands at Riblah in the land of 07:37 Hamath, that he might not reign in Jerusalem; and put the land 07:41 to a tribute of an hundred talents of silver, 07:43 and a talent of gold. And Pharaoh-nechoh made Eliakim 07:48 the son of Josiah king in the room of Josiah his father, 07:52 and turned his name to Jehoiakim, and took Jehoahaz 07:55 away: and he came to Egypt, and died there. And Jehoiakim gave 08:00 the silver and the gold to Pharaoh; but he taxed the land 08:03 to give the money according to the commandment of Pharaoh: 08:06 he exacted the silver and the gold of the people of the land, 08:10 of everyone according to his taxation, to give it to Pharaoh- 08:14 necho. Jehoiakim was twenty and five years old when he began 08:18 to reign; and he reigned eleven years in Jerusalem. 08:21 And his mother's name was Zebudah, the daughter of Pedaiah 08:26 of Rumah. And he did that which was evil in the sight of the 08:29 Lord, according to all that his fathers had done. 08:32 We're continuing to read in 2nd Kings, chapter 24. 08:36 And this is the King James Version. 08:38 In his days Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon came up, 08:43 and Jehoiakin became his servant three years: then he turned and 08:47 rebelled against him. And the Lord sent against him bands of 08:51 Chaldees, and bands of the Syrians, and bands of the 08:54 Moabites, and bands of the children of Ammon, and sent 08:57 them against Judah to destroy it, according to the word of the 08:59 Lord, which he spake by his servants the prophets. 09:01 Surely at the commandment of the Lord came this upon Judah, 09:06 to remove them out of his sight, for the sins of Manasseh, 09:09 according to all that he did; And also for the innocent blood 09:13 that he shed: for he filled Jerusalem with innocent blood; 09:16 which the Lord would not pardon. Now the rest of the acts of 09:21 Jehoiakim, and all that he did, are they not written in the book 09:23 of the chronicles of the kings of Judah? So Jehoiakim slept 09:27 with his fathers: and Jehoiachin his son reigned in his stead. 09:31 And the king of Egypt came not again any more out of his land: 09:35 for the king of Babylon had taken from the river of Egypt 09:38 to the river Euphrates all that pertained to the king of Egypt. 09:41 Jehoiachin was 18 years old when he began to reign, and he 09:44 reigned in Jerusalem 3 months. And his mother's name was 09:47 Nehushta, the daughter of Elnathan of Jerusalem. 09:50 And he did that which was evil in the sight of the Lord, 09:54 according to all that his father had done. At that time 09:57 the servants of Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon came up against 10:00 Jerusalem, and the city was besieged. And Nebuchadnezzar 10:05 king of Babylon came against the city, and his servants did 10:07 besiege it. And Jehoiachin the king of Judah went out to the 10:11 king of Babylon, he, and his mother, and his servants, 10:14 and his princes, and his officers: and the king of 10:18 Babylon took him in the 8th year of his reign. 10:21 And he carried out thence all the treasures of the house of 10:25 the Lord, and the treasures of the king's house, and cut in 10:28 pieces all the vessels of gold which Solomon king of Israel 10:31 had made in the temple of the Lord, as the Lord had said. 10:35 And he carried away all Jerusalem, and all the princes, 10:39 and all the mighty men of valor, even 10,000 captives, and all 10:44 the craftsmen and smiths: none remained, save the poorest sort 10:49 of the people of the land. And he carried away Jehoiachin 10:52 to Babylon, and the king's mother, and the king's wives, 10:56 and his officers, and the mighty of the land, 10:59 those carried he into captivity from Jerusalem to Babylon. 11:03 And all the men of might, even 7,000, and craftsmen and smiths 11:09 a thousand, all that were strong and apt for war, even them 11:14 the king of Babylon brought captive to Babylon. 11:17 And the king of Babylon made Nattaniah his father's brother 11:22 king in his stead, and changed his name to Zedekiah. 11:26 Zedekiah was twenty and one years old when he began to reign 11:31 and he reigned eleven years in Jerusalem. And his mother's name 11:35 was Hamutal, the daughter of Jeremiah of Libnah. 11:38 And he did that which was evil in the sight of the Lord, 11:41 according to all that Jehoiachim had done. For through the anger 11:46 of the Lord it came to pass in Jerusalem and Judah, until he 11:50 had cast them out from his presence, that Zedekiah rebelled 11:54 against the king of Babylon. We're reading in 2nd Kings, 11:59 chapter 25, and this is the King James Version. 12:02 And it came to pass in the 9th year of his reign, in the 10th 12:07 month, in the tenth day of the month, that Nebuchadnezzar 12:11 king of Babylon came, he and all his host, against Jerusalem, 12:16 and pitched against it: and they built forts against it round 12:20 about. And the city was besieged unto the eleventh year of king 12:25 Zedekiah. And on the 9th day of the 4th month the famine 12:30 prevailed in the city, and there was no bread for the people of 12:32 the land. And the city was broken up, and all the men of 12:36 war fled by night by the way of the gate between two walls, 12:39 which is by the king's garden: now the Chaldees were against 12:43 the city round about: and the king went the way toward the 12:47 plain. And the army of the Chaldees pursued after the king, 12:51 and overtook him in the plains of Jericho: and all his army 12:55 were scattered from him. So they took the king and brought 12:58 him up to the king of Babylon, to Riblah and they gave judgment 13:02 upon him. And they slew the sons of Zedekiah before his eyes 13:06 and put out the eyes of Zedekiah and bound him with fetters of 13:10 brass, and carried him to Babylon. And in the 5th month, 13:15 on the 7th day of the month, which is the 19th year of king 13:18 Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon, came Nebuzaradan, captain of the 13:24 guard, a servant of the king of Babylon, unto Jerusalem: 13:27 And he burnt the house of the Lord, and the king's house, 13:31 and all the houses of Jerusalem, and every great man's house 13:35 burnt he with fire. And all the army of the Chaldees, that were 13:39 with the captain of the guard brake down the walls of 13:42 Jerusalem round about. Now the rest of the people that were 13:45 left in the city, and the fugitives that fell away 13:48 to the king of Babylon, with the remnant of the multitude, 13:52 did Nebuzaradan the captain of the guard carry away. 13:56 But the captain of the guard left of the poor of the land 14:00 to be vinedressers and husbandmen. 14:03 And the pillars of brass that were in the house of the Lord, 14:06 and the bases, and the brasen sea that was in the house of the 14:09 Lord, did the Chaldees break in pieces, and carried the brass 14:12 of them to Babylon. And the pots and the shovels, and the 14:15 snuffers, and the spoons, and all the vessels of brass 14:18 wherewith they ministered, took they away. And the firepans, 14:23 and the bowls, and such things as were of gold, in gold, 14:26 and of silver, in silver, the captain of the guard took away. 14:30 Thank you for joining with me today, to read the story 14:34 from 2nd kings. Please join me again next time. Goodbye. |
