00:15 Hi, and welcome to His Words are Life.
00:17 I'm Kelly Mowrer, and we're going to continue reading 00:19 together today in 2nd Kings, the story of when 00:23 king Nebuchadnezzar came against Jerusalem. 00:26 Before we continue, let's pray together. Dear God, thank you 00:32 for bringing us apart at this moment to hear your word, 00:37 and the story of your people, Israel. Help us to learn the 00:41 lesson that you have for each of our lives today, 00:44 in the stories that you have preserved through all these 00:48 centuries. Please send the Holy Spirit now to give us 00:50 wisdom as we hear these words. We love you and thank you 00:53 for loving us. Amen. Were reading in 2nd Kings, 00:58 and king Nebuchadnezzar has come against Jerusalem, 01:02 We're now reading how his servant, Nebuzaradan, 01:06 is handling this situation; picking up in 2nd Kings, 01:09 chapter 25, verse 16. This is the King James Version. 01:13 The two pillars, one sea, and the bases which Solomon had 01:18 made for the house of the Lord; the brass of all these vessels 01:21 was without weight. The height of the one pillar was 18 cubits, 01:25 and the chapiter upon it was brass: and the height of the 01:28 chapiter three cubits; and the wreathen work, and pomegranates 01:32 upon the chapiter round about, all of brass and like unto these 01:36 had the 2nd pillar with wreathen work. And the captain of the 01:40 guard took Seraiah the chief priest, and Zephaniah the second 01:44 priest, and the 3 keepers of the door: and out of the city 01:47 he took an officer that was set over the men of war, and 5 men 01:51 of them that were in the king's presence, which were found 01:53 in the city, and the principal scribe of the host, which 01:56 mustered the people of the land and threescore men of 02:00 the people of the land that were found in the city: 02:02 and Nebuzaradan captain of the guard took these, and brought 02:06 them to the king of Babylon to Riblah: and the king of Babylon 02:10 smote them, and slew them at Riblah in the land of Hamath. 02:14 So Judah was carried away out of their land. 02:18 And as for the people that remained in the land of Judah, 02:23 whom Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon had left, even over them 02:28 he made Gedaliah the son of Ahikam, the son of Shaphan, 02:31 ruler. And when all the captains of the armies, they and their 02:35 men, heard that the king of Babylon had made Gedaliah 02:39 governor, there came to Gedaliah to Mizpah, even Ishmael the son 02:45 of Nethaniah, and Johanan the son of Careah, and Seraiah 02:49 the son of Tanhumeth the Nethtophathite, 02:52 and Jaazniah the son of a Maachathite, they and their men. 02:57 And Gedaliah sware to them, and to their men, and said unto 03:01 them, Fear not to be the servants of the Chaldees: 03:04 dwell in the land, and serve the king of Babylon; 03:06 and it will be well with you. But it came to pass 03:09 in the 7th month, that Ishmael the son of Nethaniah, 03:12 the son of Elishama, of the seed royal, came, and 10 men 03:18 with him, and smote Gedaliah, that he died, and the Jews 03:22 and the Chaldees that were with him at Mizpah and all the people 03:25 both small and great, and the captains of the armies, arose, 03:28 and came to Egypt: for they were afraid of the Chaldees. 03:31 And it came to pass in the seven and thirtieth year of 03:34 the captivity of Jehoiachin king of Judah, in the 12th month 03:38 on the seven and twentieth day of the month, that Evilmerodach 03:43 king of Babylon in the year that he began to reign did lift up 03:47 the head of Jehoiachin king of Judah out of prison; 03:50 And he spake kindly to him, and set his throne above the throne 03:54 of the kings that were with him in Babylon; And changed 03:57 his prison garments: and he did eat bread continually before him 04:01 all the days of his life. And his allowance was a continual 04:06 allowance given him of the king, a daily rate for every day, 04:11 all the days of his life. We're going to continue now 04:16 with the first book of the Chronicles. 04:18 And in the first 10 chapters there is a very long list 04:23 of genealogies that we're going to skip but we're going to pause 04:26 just briefly to read of one name mentioned in 1st Chronicles, 04:31 chapter 4, and verse 9. This is the King James Version. 04:36 And Jabez was more honourable than his brethren and his mother 04:45 called his name Jabez, saying, Because I bare him with sorrow. 04:49 And Jabez called on the God of Israel, saying, Oh that thou 04:55 wouldest bless me indeed, and enlarge my coast, and that thine 05:00 hand might be with me, and that thou wouldest keep me 05:03 from evil, that it may not grieve me! And God granted 05:08 him that which he requested. So in the whole list of 05:11 genealogy that goes on for ten chapters, Jabez gets the mention 05:15 for that incredible prayer to God, that his hand would be 05:19 with him to keep him from sin, that he wouldn't cause pain, 05:21 that he would enlarge his territory, and God answered 05:24 that prayer. Let's continue now and keep reading 05:27 in 1st Chronicles, picking up in chapter 10 as the long list of 05:33 genealogies come to an end. We'll start with verse 1 05:37 and this is the King James Version. 05:38 Now the Philistines fought against Israel; 05:42 and the men of Israel fled from before the Philistines, 05:44 and fell down slain in mount Gilboa. and the Philistines 05:48 followed hard after Saul, and after his sons; 05:51 and the Philistines slew Jonathan, and Abinadab, 05:54 and Malchishua, the sons of Saul. And the battle went sore 05:59 against Saul, and the archers hit him and he was wounded 06:02 of the archers. Then said Saul to his armour bearer, 06:06 Draw thy sword, and thrust me through therewith; lest these 06:10 uncircumcised come and abuse me. But his armour bearer would not; 06:15 for he was sore afraid. So Saul took a sword, and fell 06:20 upon it. And when his armour bearer saw that Saul was dead, 06:24 He fell likewise on the sword, and died. So Saul died, 06:28 and his 3 sons, and all his house died together. 06:32 And when all the men of Israel that were in the valley saw 06:35 that they fled, and that Saul and his sons were dead, 06:38 then they forsook their cities, and fled: and the Philistines 06:42 came and dwelt in them. And it came to pass on the morrow, 06:46 when the Philistines came to strip the slain, that they found 06:49 Saul and his sons fallen in mount Gilboa. And when they had 06:55 stripped him, they took his head, and his armour, 06:57 and sent into the land of the Philistines round about, 07:01 to carry tidings unto their idols, and to the people. 07:04 And they put his armour in the house of their gods and fastened 07:08 his head in the temple of Dagon. And when all Jabesh-gilead heard 07:13 all that the Philistines had done to Saul, they arose, 07:15 all the valiant men, and took away the body of Saul, 07:20 and the bodies of his sons, and brought them to Jabesh 07:22 and buried their bones under the oak in Jabesh, and fasted 7 days 07:28 So Saul died for his transgression which he committed 07:33 against the Lord, even against the word of the Lord, 07:36 which he kept not, and also for asking counsel of one that 07:40 had a familiar spirit to inquire of it; and inquired not of 07:45 the Lord: therefore he slew him, and turned the kingdom 07:48 unto David the son of Jesse. We'll continue reading 07:52 now in 1st Chronicles, chapter 11, 07:55 and this is the King James Version. 07:56 Then all Israel gathered themselves to David 08:01 unto Hebron, saying, Behold, we are thy bone and thy flesh. 08:05 And moreover in time past, even when Saul was king, 08:09 thou wast he that leadest out and broughtest in Israel: 08:13 And the Lord thy God said unto thee, Thou shalt feed my people 08:18 Israel and thou shalt be ruler over my people Israel. 08:21 Therefore came all the elders of Israel to the king to Hebron 08:25 and David made a covenant with them in Hebron before the Lord. 08:28 And they anointed David king over Israel, 08:30 according to word of the Lord by Samuel. 08:34 And David and all Israel went to Jerusalem, which is Jebus; 08:38 where the Jebusites were, the inhabitants of the land. 08:41 And the inhabitants of Jebus said to David, Thou shalt not 08:45 come hither. Nevertheless David took the castle of Zion, 08:49 which is the city of David. And David said, Whosoever smiteth 08:54 the Jebusites first shall be chief and captain. 08:57 So Joab the son of Zeruiah went first up, and was chief. 09:02 And David dwelt in the castle; therefore they called it 09:06 the city of David. And he built the city round about, 09:10 even from Millo round about: and Joab repaired the rest of 09:13 the city. So David waxed greater and greater: 09:18 for the Lord of hosts was with him. These also are the chief 09:23 of the mighty men whom David had: who strengthened themselves 09:27 with him in his kingdom, and with all Israel, to make him 09:30 king, according to the word of the Lord concerning Israel. 09:34 And this is the number of the mighty men whom David had; 09:38 Jashobeam, an Hachmonite, the chief of the captains: 09:43 he lifted up his spear against 300 slain by him at one time. 09:48 And after him was Eleazar the son of Dodo, the Ahohite, 09:53 who was one of the 3 mighties. He was with David at Pasdammim, 09:58 and there the Philistines were gathered together to battle, 10:01 where was a parcel of ground full of barley; and the people 10:04 fled from before the Philistines and they set themselves 10:09 in the midst of that parcel, and delivered it, and slew the 10:12 Philistines. And the Lord saved them by a great deliverance. 10:15 Now 3 of the 30 captains went down to the rock to David, 10:20 into the cave of Adullam; and the host of the Philistines 10:24 encamped in the valley of Rephaim. And David was then 10:28 in the hole, and the Philistines garrison was then at Bethlehem. 10:31 And David longed, and said, O that one would give me drink 10:35 of the water of the well of Bethlehem, that is at the gate! 10:38 And the 3 brake through the host of the Philistines, 10:43 and drew water out of the well of Bethlehem, that was by the 10:46 gate and took it, and brought it to David: but David would not 10:50 drink of it, but poured it out to the Lord, and said, 10:53 My God forbid it me, that I should do this thing: 10:57 shall I drink the blood of these men that have put their lives 11:00 in jeopardy? for with the jeopardy of their lives they 11:04 brought it. Therefore he would not drink it. These things 11:09 did these 3 mightiest. And Abishai the brother of Joab, 11:14 he was chief of the three: for lifting up his spear against 11:18 300, he slew them, and had a name among the three. 11:22 Of the three, he was more honourable than the two; 11:25 for he was their captain: howbeit he attained not 11:29 to the first three. Benaiah the son of Jehoiada, the son of a 11:33 valiant men of Kabzeel, who had done man acts; he slew two 11:39 lion like men of Moab: also he went down and slew a lion 11:44 in a pit in a snowy day. And he slew an Egyptian, a man of 11:50 great stature, 5 cubits high; and in the Egyptian's hand was 11:54 a spear like a weaver's beam; and he went down to him 11:57 with a staff, and plucked the spear out of the Egyptian's 12:00 hand, and slew him with his own spear. These things did Benaiah 12:04 the son of Jehoiada, and had the name among the three mighties. 12:08 Behold, he was honourable among the thirty, but attained not to 12:14 the first three: and David set him over his guard. 12:18 And for the rest of first Chronicles, chapter 11, 12:22 we see a continued list of all the mighty men of David. 12:25 We're going to continue now with chapter 12, and verse 1. 12:29 and this is the King James Version. 12:30 Now these are they that came to David to Ziklag, while he yet 12:36 kept himself close because of Saul the son of Kish: 12:39 and they were among the mighty men helpers of the war. 12:42 They were armed with bows, and could use both the right hand 12:46 and the left in hurling stones and shooting arrows out of a bow 12:49 even of Saul's brethren of Benjamin. 12:51 And again continuing with a long list of names, we're going 12:55 to skip to verse 14. These were the sons of Gad. 12:59 Captains of the host: one of the least was over and hundred, 13:03 and the greatest over 1,000. These are they that went over 13:06 Jordan in the first month, when it had overflown all his banks; 13:10 and they put to flight all them of the valleys, both toward the 13:13 east, and toward the west. And there came of the children 13:17 of Benjamin and Judah to the hold unto David. 13:20 And David went out to meet them and answered and said unto 13:23 them, if ye be come peaceably unto me to help me, 13:27 mine heart shall be knit unto you: but if ye be come to betray 13:32 me to mine enemies, seeing there is no wrong in mine hands, 13:36 the God of our fathers, look thereon, and rebuke it. 13:40 Then the spirit came upon Amasai who was chief of the captains, 13:44 and he said, Thine are we, David and on thy side, 13:48 thou son of Jesse: peace, peace be unto thee, and peace be to 13:53 thine helpers; for thy God helpeth thee. 13:55 Then David received them, and made them captains of the band. 14:00 And there fell some of Manasseh to David, when he came with the 14:04 Philistines against Saul to battle: but they helped them 14:07 not: for the lords of the Philistines upon advisement 14:10 sent him away, saying, He will fall to his master Saul 14:14 to the jeopardy of our heads. As he went to Ziklag, there fell 14:17 to him of Manasseh, Adnah and Jozabad, and Jediael, 14:21 and Michael, and Jozabad, and Elihu, and Zilthai, captains 14:25 of the thousands that were of Manasseh. And they helped David 14:29 against the band of the rovers: for they were all mighty men 14:31 of valour, and were captains in the host. Please join me 14:35 again next time to continue to read the story of David. 14:38 Goodbye. |
