00:16 Hello, and welcome back to His Words are Life.
00:18 I'm Kelly Mowrer and thank you for joining with me today
00:22 to read the word of God. Let's pray together before we start.
00:24 Dear God, thank you so much for the opportunity to come again
00:31 apart from our life and the busyness of it to sit quietly
00:34 with your word. Please bless us as we listen and read now
00:39 together and may your Holy Spirit show us the truth that
00:43 you have for each one of us. We love you so much,
00:45 and thank you for loving us. Amen.
00:48 When we were last together we were reading about the reign of
00:51 King Hezekiah and how it was blessed because of his obedience
00:55 to God. We're picking up now in 2nd Chronicles, chapter 32,
00:59 and verse 23 and this is the King James Version.
01:02 And many brought gifts unto the Lord to Jerusalem, and presents
01:09 to Hezekiah king of Judah: so that he was magnified
01:12 in the sight of all nations from thenceforth.
01:15 In those days Hezekiah was sick to the death, and prayed unto
01:21 the Lord: and he spake unto him, and he gave him a sign.
01:24 But Hezekiah rendered not again according to the benefit done
01:29 unto him; for his heart was lifted up: therefore there was
01:34 wrath upon him, and upon Judah and Jerusalem.
01:37 Notwithstanding Hezekiah humbled himself for the pride of his
01:41 heart, both he and the inhabitants of Jerusalem,
01:44 so that the wrath of the Lord came not upon them
01:47 in the days of Hezekiah. And Hezekiah had exceeding much
01:52 riches and honor: and he made himself treasuries for silver,
01:56 and for gold, and for precious stones, and for spices, and for
02:01 shields, and for all manner of pleasant jewels;
02:03 Storehouses also for the increase of corn, and wine,
02:07 and oil; and stalls for all manner of beasts,
02:10 and cotes for flocks. Moreover he provided him cities,
02:15 and possessions of flocks and herds in abundance:
02:18 for God had given him substance very much. This same Hezekiah
02:24 also stopped the upper water course of Gihon, and brought it
02:27 straight down to the west side of the city of David.
02:30 And Hezekiah prospered in all his works.
02:34 Howbeit in the business of the ambassadors of the princes of
02:39 Babylon, who sent unto him to inquire of the wonder that was
02:44 done in the land, God left him, to try him, that he might know
02:49 all that was in his heart. Now the rest of the acts of Hezekiah
02:54 and his goodness, behold, they are written in the vision
02:58 of Isaiah the prophet, the son of Amoz, and in the book of
03:02 the kings of Judah and Israel. And Hezekiah slept with his
03:06 fathers, and they buried him in the chiefest of the sepulchres
03:10 of the sons of David: and all Judah and the inhabitants of
03:14 Jerusalem did him honor at his death. And Manasseh his son
03:19 reigned in his stead.
03:21 Continuing now with 2nd Chronicles, chapter 33,
03:25 This is the King James Version.
03:27 Manasseh was twelve years old when he began to reign,
03:32 and he reigned fifty and five years in Jerusalem:
03:35 but did that which was evil in the sight of the Lord,
03:39 like unto the abominations of the heathen, whom the Lord had
03:43 cast out before the children of Israel. For he built again the
03:47 high places which Hezekiah his father had broken down,
03:50 and he reared up altars for Baalim and made groves,
03:55 and worshipped all the host of heaven, and served them.
03:57 Also he built altars in the house of the Lord,
04:01 whereof the Lord had said, In Jerusalem shall my name be
04:06 for ever. And he built altars for all the host of heaven
04:10 in two courts of the house of the Lord. And he caused his
04:12 children to pass through the fire in the valley of the son
04:17 of Hinnom: also he observed times, and used enchantments,
04:21 and used witchcraft, and dealt with a familiar spirit, and
04:26 with wizards: he wrought much evil in the sight of the Lord.
04:29 to provoke him to anger. And he set a carved image,
04:34 the idol which he made in the house of God, of which God
04:38 had said to David and to Solomon his son, In this house
04:41 and in Jerusalem, which I have chosen before all the tribes of
04:45 Israel, will I put my name for ever: Neither will I any more
04:49 remove the foot of Israel from out of the land which I have
04:52 appointed for your fathers; so that they will take heed to do
04:56 all that I have commanded them, according to the whole law
05:00 and the statutes and the ordinances by the hand of Moses.
05:02 So Manasseh made Judah and the inhabitants of Jerusalem to err,
05:07 and to do worse than the heathen whom the Lord had destroyed
05:11 before the children of Israel. And the Lord spake to Manasseh,
05:15 and to his people: but they would not hearken.
05:18 Wherefore the Lord brought upon them the captains of the host
05:23 of the king of Assyria, which took Manasseh among the thorns
05:27 and bound him with fetters, and carried him to Babylon.
05:30 And when he was in affliction, he besought the Lord his God,
05:35 and humbled himself greatly before the God of his fathers,
05:39 and prayed unto him: and he was entreated of him, and heard his
05:43 supplication, and brought him again to Jerusalem into his
05:48 kingdom. Then Manasseh knew that the Lord he was God.
05:54 Now after this he build a wall without the city of David,
05:59 on the west side of Gihon, in the valley, even to the entering
06:03 in of the fish gate, and compassed about Ophel,
06:07 and raised it up a very great height, and put captains of war
06:12 in all the fenced cities of Judah.
06:14 And he took away the strange Gods, and the idol out of the
06:19 house of the Lord, and all the altars that he had built in the
06:22 mount of the house of the Lord, and in Jerusalem,
06:24 and cast them out of the city. And he repaired the altar
06:29 of the Lord, and sacrificed thereon peace offerings
06:32 and thank offerings, and commanded Judah to serve the
06:37 Lord God of Israel. Nevertheless the people did sacrifice still
06:43 in the high places, yet unto the Lord their God only.
06:47 Now the rest of the acts of Manasseh, and his prayer
06:51 unto his God, and the words of the seers that spake to him
06:55 in the name of the Lord God of Israel, behold, they are written
06:59 in the book of the kings of Israel. His prayer also,
07:03 and how God was entreated of him, and all his sins,
07:06 and his trespass, and the places wherein he built high places,
07:10 and set up groves and graven images, before he was humbled:
07:13 behold, they are written among the sayings of the seers.
07:18 So Manasseh slept with his fathers, and they buried him
07:22 in his own house: and Amon his son reigned in his stead.
07:28 Amon was two and twenty years old when he began to reign,
07:32 and reigned 2 years in Jerusalem But he did that which was evil
07:37 in the sight of the Lord, as did Manasseh his father:
07:40 for Amon sacrificed unto all the carved images which Manasseh
07:45 his father had made, and served them; and humbled not himself
07:50 before the Lord, as Manasseh his father had humbled himself;
07:54 but Amon trespassed more and more. And his servants conspired
08:00 against him, and slew him in his own house.
08:03 But the people of the land slew all them that had conspired
08:07 against king Amon and the people of the land made Josiah his son
08:11 king in his stead. - We're continuing with 2nd Chronicles,
08:16 chapter 34, and this is the King James Version.
08:19 Josiah was 8 years old when he began to reign, and he reigned
08:26 in Jerusalem one and thirty years.
08:29 And he did that which was right in the sight of the Lord,
08:32 and walked in the ways of David his father,
08:35 and declined neither to the right hand, nor to the left.
08:39 For in the 8th year of his reign, while he was yet young,
08:43 he began to seek after the God of David his father:
08:47 and in the 12th year he began to purge Judah and Jerusalem
08:52 from the high places, and the groves, and the carved images,
08:56 and the molten images. And they brake down the altars of Baalim
09:01 in his presence; and the images that were on high above them,
09:05 he cut down; and the groves, and the carved images,
09:09 and the molten images he brake in pieces, and made dust of them
09:14 and strowed it upon the graves of them that had sacrificed
09:17 unto them. And he burnt the bones of the priests upon their
09:21 altars, and cleansed Judah and Jerusalem. And so did he in the
09:27 cities of Manasseh, and Ephraim, and Simeon, even unto Naphtali,
09:32 with their mattocks round about. And when he had broken down
09:36 the altars and the groves, and had beaten the graven images
09:40 into powder, and cut down all the idols throughout all
09:44 the land of Israel, he returned to Jerusalem.
09:47 Now in the 18th year of his reign, when he had purged
09:52 the land, and the house, he sent Shaphan the son of Azaliah,
09:57 and Maaseiah the governor of the city, and Joah the son of
10:03 Joahaz the recorder, to repair the house of the Lord his God.
10:08 And when they came to Hilkiah the high priest, they delivered
10:12 the money that was brought unto the house of God,
10:15 which the Levites that kept the doors had gathered of the hand
10:18 of Manasseh and Ephraim, and of all the remnant of Israel,
10:21 and of all Judah and Benjamin; and they returned to Jerusalem.
10:25 And they put it in the hand of the workmen that had the
10:29 oversight of the house of the Lord, and they gave it to the
10:32 workmen that wrought in the house of the Lord, to repair
10:34 and amend the house: even to the artificers and builders gave
10:40 they it, to buy hewn stone, and timber for couplings, and to
10:44 floor the houses which the kings of Judah had destroyed.
10:47 And the men did the work faithfully:
10:51 and the overseers of them were Jahath and Obadiah,
10:55 the Levites, of the sons of Merari; and Zechariah
10:59 and Meshullam, of the sons of the Kohathites to set it forward
11:02 and other of the Levites, all that could skill of instruments
11:08 of music. Also they were over the bearers of burdens,
11:12 and were overseers of all that wrought the work in any manner
11:16 of service: and of the Levites there were scribes, and officers
11:21 and porters. And when they brought out the money
11:25 that was brought into the house of the Lord, Hilkiah the priest
11:28 found a book of the law of the Lord given by Moses.
11:32 And Hilkiah answered and said to Shaphan the scribe,
11:36 I have found the book of the law in the house of the Lord.
11:40 And Hilkiah delivered the book to Shaphan. And Shaphan
11:44 carried the book to the king, and brought the king word back
11:48 again, saying, All that was committed to thy servants,
11:51 they do it. And they have gathered together the money
11:56 that was found in the house of the Lord, and have delivered it
11:59 into the hand of the overseers, and to the hand of the workmen.
12:02 Then Shaphan the scribe told the king, saying,
12:05 Hilkiah the priest had given me a book, and Shaphan read it
12:09 before the king. And it came to pass when the king had heard
12:13 the words of the law, that he rent his clothes.
12:17 And the king commanded Hilkiah, and Ahikam the son of Shaphan,
12:22 and Abdon the son of Micah, and Shaphan the scribe,
12:25 and Asaiah a servant of the king's saying, Go inquire
12:30 of the Lord for me, and for them that are left in Israel and in
12:34 Judah, concerning the words of the book that is found:
12:37 for great is the wrath of the Lord that is poured out upon us,
12:42 because our fathers have not kept the word of the Lord,
12:44 to do after all that is written in this book.
12:47 And Hilkiah, and they that the king had appointed,
12:51 went to Huldah the prophetess, the wife of Shallum the son of
12:56 Tikvath, the son of Hasrah, keeper of the wardrobe;
12:59 now she dwelt in Jerusalem in the college: and they spake
13:04 to her to that effect, And she answered them,
13:07 Thus saith the Lord, Behold, I will bring evil upon this place,
13:13 and upon the inhabitants thereof even all the curses that are
13:16 written in the book, which they have read before the king
13:19 of Judah: because they have forsaken me, and burned incense
13:23 unto other gods, that they might provoke me to anger with all the
13:27 works of their hand; therefore my wrath shall be poured out
13:30 upon this place, and shall not be quenched.
13:32 And as for the king of Judah, who sent you to inquire
13:36 of the lord, so shall ye say unto him, Thus saith the Lord
13:40 God of Israel concerning the words which thou hast heard;
13:43 Because thine heart was tender, and thou didst humble thyself
13:48 before God, when thou heardest his words against this place,
13:52 and against the inhabitants thereof, and humbledst thyself
13:55 before me, and didst rend thy clothes, and weep before me;
13:58 I have even heard thee also, saith the Lord.
14:03 Behold, I will gather thee to thy fathers, and thou shalt be
14:07 gathered to thy grave in peace, neither shall thine eyes see
14:11 all the evil that I will bring upon this place,
14:14 and upon the inhabitants of the same.
14:16 So they brought the king word again. Then the king sent and
14:21 gathered together all the elders of Judah and Jerusalem.
14:25 And the king went up into the house of the Lord,
14:27 and all the men of Judah, and the inhabitants of Jerusalem,
14:30 and the priests, and the Levites, and all the people,
14:32 great and small: and he read in their ears all the words
14:36 of the book of the covenant
14:37 that that was found in the house of the Lord.
