00:15 Hello and welcome to His Words are Life.
00:17 I'm Kelly Mowrer and thank you for coming apart with me
00:20 for a little time to sit and read the word of God together.
00:23 Let's pray before we start. Dear Father in heaven,
00:27 thank you for your word that strengthens our faith
00:31 and as we read today, the account of your servant, Job,
00:36 please change our hearts to understand and love you and
00:41 serve you like Job did, and to trust you no matter what may be
00:46 going on. And to stand firm. Thank you so much for loving us,
00:52 We love you. Amen. - We began the story of Job the last time
00:57 we were together. A man who was respected and wealthy,
01:01 seemed to have everything going right for him and loved the Lord
01:05 with all his heart. And Satan accused Job before God, and
01:09 said if you were to take away all that he has. If you were to
01:12 take away his health, he would curse you and die. And God
01:16 permitted Satan to come against Job. Nothing happened in Job's
01:22 life except that God gave the permission for it to happen.
01:25 And Satan came and destroyed all that Job had and afflicted him
01:29 with sores. His wife said to Job, Why don't you just curse
01:33 God and die. But Job said, would we take only good things from
01:37 the hand of the Lord, and not the bad as well? And in no way
01:42 did Job sin, no matter what the devil brought against him.
01:45 We're going to pick up the story now in Job, chapter 3.
01:49 His three friends have come to be with him, and when they
01:53 first see him, they are so overcome with what had happened
01:56 to him that the bible says they sit in silence with him
01:58 for 7 days. We pick up as Job is speaking and he is
02:03 cursing the day he was born. We're reading in Job, chapter 3,
02:07 beginning in verse 6. This is the King James Version.
02:11 As for that night, let darkness seize upon it; let it not be
02:17 joined unto the days of the year, let it not come into the
02:21 number of the months. Lo, let that night be solitary,
02:24 let no joyful voice come therein. Let them curse it
02:29 that curse the day, who are ready to raise up their mourning
02:32 Let the stars of the twilight thereof be dark;
02:35 let it look for light, but have none; neither let it see the
02:39 dawning of the day: because it shut not up the doors of my
02:42 mother's womb, nor hid sorrow from mine eyes. Why died I not
02:48 from the womb? why did I not give up the ghost when I came
02:52 out of the belly? Why did the knees prevent me? or why the
02:55 breasts that I should suck? For now should I have lain still
03:00 and been quiet, I should have slept: then had I been at rest,
03:03 with kings and counselors of the earth, which built desolate
03:07 places for themselves; or with princes that had gold,
03:10 who filled their houses with silver: or as an hidden untimely
03:14 birth I had not been; as infants which never saw light.
03:18 There the wicked cease from troubling; and there the weary
03:23 be at rest. There the prisoners rest together; they hear not
03:27 the voice of the oppressor. The small and great are there;
03:31 and the servant is free from his master. Wherefore is light given
03:36 to him that is in misery, and live unto the bitter in soul;
03:39 which long for death, but it cometh not; and dig for it more
03:43 than for hid treasures; which rejoice exceedingly, and are
03:46 glad when they can find the grave? Why is light given to a
03:50 man whose way is hid, and whom God hath hedged in?
03:53 For my sighing cometh before I eat, and my roarings are poured
03:58 out like the waters. For the thing which I greatly feared is
04:01 come upon me, and that which I was afraid of is come unto me.
04:04 I was not in safety, neither had I rest, neither was I quiet;
04:09 yet trouble came. Continuing with Job, chapter 4,
04:15 and this is the King James Version.
04:16 Then Eliphaz the Temanite answered and said, If we assay
04:23 to commune with thee, wilt thou be grieved? but who can withhold
04:27 himself from speaking? Behold, thou hast instructed many,
04:31 and thou hast strengthened the weak hands. Thy words have
04:35 upholden him that was falling, and thou hast strengthened the
04:38 feeble knees. But now it is come upon thee, and thou
04:43 faintest; it toucheth thee, and thou art troubled.
04:46 Is not this thy fear, thy confidence, thy hope, and the
04:52 uprightness of thy ways? Remember, I pray thee,
04:56 whoever perished being innocent? or where were the righteous
05:01 cut off? Even as I have seen, they that plow iniquity, and sow
05:07 wickedness, reap the same. By the blast of God they perish,
05:12 and by the breath of his nostrils are they consumed.
05:15 The roaring of the lion, and the voice of the fierce lion, and
05:19 the teeth of the young lions, are broken. The old lion
05:23 perisheth for lack of prey, and the stout lion's whelps are
05:27 scattered abroad. Now a thing was secretly brought to me,
05:32 and mine ear received a little thereof. In thoughts from the
05:36 visions of the night, when deep sleep falleth on men.
05:39 Fear came upon me, and trembling, which made all my
05:42 bones to shake. Then a spirit passed before my face;
05:47 the hair of my flesh stood up: It stood still, but I could not
05:50 discern the form thereof: an image was before mine eyes,
05:54 there was silence, and I heard a voice, saying, Shall mortal
06:00 man be more just than God? shall a man be more pure than his
06:06 maker? Behold, he put no trust in his servants; and his angels
06:11 he charged with folly: How much less in them that dwell
06:15 in houses of clay, whose foundation is in the dust,
06:17 which are crushed before the moth? They are destroyed from
06:22 morning to evening: they perish for ever without any regarding
06:25 it. Doth not their excellency which is in them go away?
06:29 they die, even without wisdom. Continuing in the book of Job
06:36 chapter 5. This is the King James Version.
06:38 Call now, if there be any that will answer thee;
06:43 And to which of the saints wilt thou turn? For wrath killeth
06:47 the foolish man, and envy slayeth the silly one.
06:50 I have seen the foolish taking root: but suddenly I cursed his
06:54 habitation. His children are far from safety and they are crushed
06:59 in the gate, neither is there any to deliver them.
07:02 Whose harvest the hungry eateth up, and taketh it even out of
07:07 the thorns, and the robber swalloweth up their substance.
07:09 Although affliction cometh not forth of the dust, neither doth
07:13 trouble spring out of the ground; yet man is born
07:17 unto trouble as the sparks fly upward. I would seek unto God,
07:21 and unto God would I commit my cause: Which doeth great things
07:26 and unsearchable; marvelous things without number:
07:29 Who giveth rain upon the earth, and sendeth waters upon the
07:33 fields: To set up on high those that be low; that those which
07:39 mourn may be exalted to safety. He disappointeth the devices
07:44 of the crafty, so that their hands cannot perform their
07:48 enterprise. He taketh the wise in their own craftiness:
07:52 and the counsel of the froward is carried headlong.
07:55 They meet with darkness in the daytime, and grope in the
07:59 noon day as in the night. But he saveth the poor from the
08:03 sword, from their mouth, and from the hand of the mighty.
08:07 So the poor hath hope, and iniquity stoppeth her mouth.
08:12 Behold, happy is the man whom God correcteth: therefore
08:18 despise not thou the chastening of the Almighty:
08:22 For he maketh sore, and bindeth up: he woundeth, and his hands
08:27 make whole. He shall deliver thee in six troubles:
08:31 yea in seven there shall no evil touch thee.
08:34 In famine he shall redeem thee from death: and in war from the
08:40 power of the sword. Thou shalt be hid from the scourge of the
08:45 tongue: neither shalt thou be afraid of destruction
08:47 when it cometh. At destruction and famine thou shalt laugh:
08:51 neither shalt thou be afraid of the beast of the earth.
08:54 For thou shalt be in league with the stones of the field:
08:58 and the beasts of the field shall be at peace with thee.
09:01 And thou shalt know that thy tabernacle shall be in peace;
09:05 and thou shalt visit thy habitation, and shalt not sin.
09:09 Thou shalt know also that thy seed shall be great, and thine
09:12 offspring as the grass of the earth. Thou shalt come to thy
09:14 grave in a full age, like as a shock of corn cometh in
09:19 in his season. Lo this, we have searched it, so it is; hear it,
09:26 and know thou it for thy good. Continuing to read in the book
09:32 of Job, chapter 6. This is the King James Version.
09:35 But Job answered and said, O that my grief were throughly
09:42 weighed, and my calamity laid in the balances together!
09:45 For now it would be heavier than the sand of the sea:
09:49 therefore my words are swallowed up. For the arrows of the
09:52 Almighty are within me, the poison whereof drinketh up
09:56 my spirit: the terrors of God do set themselves in array against
09:59 me. Doth the wild ass bray when he hath grass? or loweth the ox
10:04 over his fodder? Can that which is unsavory be eaten without
10:08 salt? or is there any taste in the white of an egg?
10:11 The things that my soul refused to touch are as my sorrowful
10:17 meat. Oh that I might have my request; and that God would
10:22 grant me the thing that I long for! Even that it would please
10:25 God to destroy me; that he would let loose his hand,
10:28 and cut me off! Then should I yet have comfort; yea, I would
10:33 harden myself in sorrow: let him not spare; for I have not
10:36 concealed the words of the Holy One. What is my strength,
10:41 that I should hope? and what is mine end, that I should prolong
10:44 my life? Is my strength the strength of stones?
10:48 or is my flesh of brass? Is not my help in me? and is wisdom
10:53 driven quite from me? To him that is afflicted pity should be
10:58 shewed from his friend; but he forsaketh the fear of the
11:02 Almighty. My brethren have dealt deceitfully as a brook, and as
11:07 the stream of brooks they pass away; which are blackish
11:11 by reason of the ice and wherein the snow is hid: What time they
11:15 wax warm, they vanish: when it is hot, they are consumed out
11:19 of their place. The paths of their way are turned aside;
11:23 they go to nothing, and perish. The troops of Tema looked,
11:27 the companies of Sheba waited for them. They were confounded
11:31 because they had hoped; they came thither, and were ashamed.
11:33 For now ye are nothing; ye see my casting down, and are afraid.
11:39 Did I say, Bring unto me? or, Give a reward for me of your
11:44 substance? Or, Deliver me from the enemy's hand?
11:46 or redeem me from the hand of the mighty? Teach me, and I will
11:50 hold my tongue: and cause me to understand wherein I have erred.
11:54 How forcible are right words! but what doth your arguing
11:59 reprove? Do ye imagine to reprove words, and the speeches
12:03 of one that is desperate, which are as wind? Yea, ye overwhelm
12:08 the fatherless, and ye dig a pit for your friend. Now therefore
12:12 be content, look upon me; for it is evident unto you if I lie.
12:17 Return, I pray you, let it not be iniquity; yea, return again,
12:22 my righteousness is in it. Is there iniquity in my tongue?
12:26 cannot my taste discern perverse things?
12:30 We're continuing to read in Job, chapter 7,
12:34 This is the King James Version. Is there not an appointed time
12:39 to man upon the earth? are not his days also like the days of
12:43 an hireling? As a servant earnestly desireth the shadow,
12:47 and as an hireling looketh for the reward of his work:
12:49 So am I made to possess months of vanity, and wearisome nights
12:53 are appointed to me. When I lie down, I say, When shall I arise,
12:58 and the night be gone? and I am full of tossings to and fro
13:03 unto the dawning of the day. My flesh is clothed with worms
13:08 and clods of dust; my skin is broken, and become loathsome.
13:13 My days are swifter than a weaver's shuttle, and are spent
13:16 without hope. O remember that my life is wind: mine eye shall no
13:23 more see good. The eye of him that hath seen me shall see me
13:26 no more: thine eyes are upon me, and I am not. As the cloud is
13:32 consumed and vanisheth away: so he that goeth down to the
13:37 grave shall come up no more He shall return no more
13:40 to his house, neither shall his place know him any more.
13:42 Therefore I will not refrain my mouth; I will speak in the
13:46 anguish of my spirit; I will complain in the bitterness
13:49 of my soul. Am, I a sea, or a whale, that thou settest a watch
13:54 over me? When I say, My bed shall comfort me, my couch shall
13:59 ease my complaint; then thou scarest me with dreams,
14:03 and terrifiest me through visions: So that my soul
14:06 chooseth strangling, and death rather than life.
14:09 I loath it; I would not live alway: let me alone:
14:13 for my days are vanity. What is man, that thou shouldest magnify
14:18 him? and that thou shouldest set thine heart upon him?
14:20 And that thou shouldest visit him every morning, and try him
14:23 every moment? How long wilt thou not depart from me,
14:28 nor let me alone till I swallow down my spittle? I have sinned;
14:32 what shall I do unto thee, O thou preserver of men?
14:35 why hast thou set me as a mark against thee, so that I am a
14:38 burden to myself?
