00:15 Hello and welcome to His Words are Life.
00:17 I'm Kelly Mowrer and thank you for joining with me today 00:20 to continue reading the story of Job. Let's pray together 00:24 before we start. Dear God, thank you so much for this story 00:28 and for the way that it bears witness to you and to obedience 00:35 to you and to the joy of that; unto the triumph of your name 00:40 when we obey you in our trials. Please help us to hear these 00:45 words and to learn from them today, what you would have us 00:48 each to put into practice in our own lives. Thank you so much 00:52 We love you. Amen. We've been reading in the book 00:56 of Job how the Lord permitted Satan to take from Job, 01:00 his family, his wealth, his health and here sits Job 01:07 suffering and destitute. His 3 friends come to be with him 01:12 and they begin to have this ongoing dialog with him, 01:15 about how his disobedience somehow must have caused this. 01:20 Job maintains over and over again that he is righteous 01:24 in the eyes of the Lord. And then a young man, named Elihu, 01:29 who has been sitting by and hearing all this, speaks up 01:33 and says, Even though I am younger than you, I am going to 01:38 now speak my piece. We're picking up in Job, chapter 33, 01:42 as Elihu is saying to Job, I have been listening to what you 01:47 say. I have heard you defending yourself that you are clean 01:51 of transgression. We're now going to pick up with verse 10. 01:55 Behold, he findeth occasions against me, he counteth me for 02:00 his enemy. He putteth my feet in the stocks, he marketh all my 02:03 paths. Behold, in this thou art not just: I will answer thee, 02:11 That God is greater than man. Why dost thou strive against 02:16 him? for he giveth not account of any of his matters. 02:19 For God speaketh once, yea twice, yet man perceiveth it 02:24 not. In a dream, in a vision of the night, when deep sleep 02:29 falleth upon men, in slumberings upon the bed; then he openeth 02:33 the ears of men, and sealeth their instruction, that he may 02:36 withdraw man from his purpose, and hide pride from man. 02:40 He keepeth back his soul from the pit, and his life from 02:45 perishing by the sword. He is chastened also with pain upon 02:49 his bed, and the multitude of his bones with strong pain: 02:52 So that his life abhorreth bread and his soul dainty meat. 02:56 His flesh is consumed away, that it cannot be seen; 03:00 and his bones that were not seen stick out. Yea his soul draweth 03:05 up near unto the grave, and his life to the destroyers. 03:08 If there be a messenger with him, an interpreter, one among a 03:12 thousand, to shew unto man his uprightness: Then he is gracious 03:17 unto him, and saith, Deliver him from going down to the pit: 03:20 I have found a ransom. His flesh shall be fresher than a child's: 03:24 he shall return to the days of his youth: He shall pray 03:27 unto God, and he will be favourable unto him: 03:30 and he shall see his face with joy: for he will render unto man 03:34 his righteousness. He looketh upon men, and if any say, 03:40 I have sinned, and perverted that which was right, 03:43 and it profited me not; he will deliver his soul from going into 03:48 the pit, and his life shall see the light. Lo, all these things 03:54 worketh God oftentimes with man, to bring back his soul from the 03:58 pit to be enlightened with the light of the living. Mark well, 04:02 O Job, hearken unto me: hold thy peace, and I will speak. 04:06 If thou hast any thing to say, answer me: speak, for I desire 04:11 to justify thee. If not, hearken unto me: hold thy peace, 04:17 and I shall teach thee wisdom. - Continuing in Job, chapter 34, 04:23 this is the King James Version. Furthermore Elihu answered 04:28 and said, Hear my words, O ye wise men; and give ear unto me, 04:31 ye that have knowledge. For the ear trieth words, as the mouth 04:35 tasteth meat. Let us choose to us judgment: let us know among 04:41 ourselves what is good. For Job hath said, I am righteous: 04:46 and God hath taken away my judgment. Should I lie against 04:51 my right? my wound is incurable without transgression. 04:55 What man is like Job, who drinketh up scorning like water? 05:01 Which goeth in company with the workers of iniquity, and 05:06 walketh with wicked men. For he hath said, It profiteth a man 05:11 nothing that he should delight himself with God. 05:13 Therefore hearken unto me, ye men of understanding: 05:17 far be it from God, that he should do wickedness; 05:21 and from the Almighty, that he should commit iniquity. 05:23 For the work of a man shall he render unto him, and cause every 05:29 man to find according to his ways. Yea surely God will not 05:33 do wickedly, neither will the almighty pervert judgment. 05:36 Who hath given him a charge over the earth? or who hath disposed 05:40 the whole world? If he set his heart upon man, if he gather 05:45 unto himself his spirit and his breath; All flesh shall perish 05:50 together, and man shall turn again unto dust. 05:53 If now thou hast understanding, hear this: hearken to the voice 05:59 of my words. Shall even he that hateth right govern? 06:04 and wilt thou condemn him that is most just? 06:09 Is it fit to say to a king, Thou art wicked? and to princes, 06:16 ye are ungodly? How much less to him that accepteth not 06:21 the persons of princes, nor regardeth the rich more than the 06:24 poor? for they all are the work of his hands. In a moment 06:29 shall they die, and the people shall be troubled at midnight 06:31 and pass away: and the mighty shall be taken away without 06:36 hand. For his eyes are upon the ways of man, and he seeth all 06:41 his goings. There is no darkness nor shadow of death, 06:45 where the workers of iniquity may hide themselves. 06:49 For he will not lay upon man more that right; 06:53 that he should enter into judgment with God. 06:55 He shall break in pieces mighty men without number, 06:59 and set others in their stead. Therefore he knoweth their works 07:04 and he overturneth them in the night, so that they are 07:07 destroyed. He striketh them as wicked men in the open sight of 07:12 others; because they turned back from him and would not consider 07:15 any of his ways: So that they cause the cry of the poor to 07:19 come unto him, and he heareth the cry of the afflicted. 07:21 When he giveth quietness, who then can make trouble? 07:27 and when he hideth his face, who then can behold him? 07:32 whether it be done against a nation, or against a man only: 07:36 That the Hypocrite reign not, lest the people be ensnared. 07:41 Surely it is meet to be said unto God, I have borne 07:46 chastisement, I will not offend any more: That which I see not 07:52 teach thou me: if I have done iniquity, I will do no more. 07:59 Should it be according to thy mind? he will recompense it, 08:03 whether thou refuse, or whether thou choose; and not I: 08:07 therefore speak what thou knowest. 08:10 Let men of understanding tell me and let a wise man hearken 08:14 unto me. Job hath spoken without knowledge, and his words 08:19 were without wisdom. My desire is that Job may be tried 08:24 unto the end because of his answers for wicked men. 08:27 For he addeth rebellion unto his sin, he clappeth his hands 08:32 among us, and multiplieth his words against God. 08:37 Continuing in Job, chapter 35. This is the King James Version. 08:41 Elihu spake moreover, and said, Thinkest thou this to be right, 08:48 that thou saidst, My righteousness is more 08:51 than God's? For thou saidst, What advantage will it be unto 08:54 thee, and What profit shall I have, if I be cleansed from my 08:57 sin? I will answer thee, and thy companions with thee. 09:02 Look unto the heavens, and see; and behold the clouds which are 09:07 higher than thou. If thou sinnest, what doest thou 09:11 against him? of if thy transgressions be multiplied, 09:14 what doest thou unto him? If thou be righteous, 09:18 what gives thou him? or what receiveth he of thine hand? 09:21 Thy wickedness may hurt a man as thou art; 09:24 and thy righteousness may profit the son of man. 09:26 By reason of the multitude of oppressions they make the 09:30 oppressed to cry: they cry out by reason of the arm 09:32 of the mighty. But none saith, Where is God my maker, 09:36 who giveth songs in the night; who teacheth us more than the 09:41 beasts of the earth, and maketh us wiser than the fowls 09:45 of heaven? There they cry, but none giveth answer, 09:50 because of the pride of evil men. Surely God will not hear 09:57 vanity, neither will the Almighty regard it. 10:00 Although thou sayest thou shalt not see him, yet judgment is 10:05 before him; therefore trust thou in him. But now, because it is 10:11 not so, he hath visited in his anger; yet he knoweth it not 10:15 in great extremity: Therefore doth Job open his mouth in vain; 10:20 he multiplieth words without knowledge. 10:23 Continuing on in Job, chapter 36 This is the King James Version. 10:28 Elihu also proceeded, and said, Suffer me a little, and I will 10:35 shew thee that I have yet to speak on God's behalf. 10:38 I will fetch my knowledge from afar and will ascribe 10:42 righteousness to my maker. For truly my words shall not 10:47 be false. He that is perfect in knowledge is with thee. 10:51 Behold, God is mighty, and despiseth not any: 10:55 he is mighty in strength and wisdom. He preserveth not 11:00 the life of the wicked: but giveth right to the poor. 11:04 He withdraweth not his eyes from the righteous: 11:07 but with kings are they on the throne; yea he doth establish 11:11 them for ever, and they are exalted. And if they be bound in 11:15 fetters, and be holden in cords of affliction; then he sheweth 11:20 them their work and their transgressions that they have 11:23 exceeded. He openeth also their ear to discipline and commandeth 11:29 that they return from iniquity. If they obey and serve him, 11:33 they shall spend their days in prosperity, and their years in 11:37 pleasures. But if they obey not, they shall perish by the sword, 11:42 and they shall die without knowledge. 11:45 But the hypocrites in heart heap up wrath: they cry not 11:49 when he bindeth them. They die in youth, and their life is 11:53 among the unclean. He delivereth the poor in his 11:56 affliction, and openeth their ears in oppression. 11:59 Even so would he have removed thee out of the strait into a 12:03 broad place, where there is no straitness; and that which 12:07 should be set on the table should be full of fatness. 12:09 But thou hast fulfilled the judgment of the wicked: 12:13 judgment and justice take hold on thee. Because there is wrath, 12:19 beware lest he take thee away with his stroke: then a great 12:23 ransom cannot deliver thee. Will he esteem thy riches? 12:27 No, not gold, nor all the forces of strength. Desire not the 12:33 night, when people are cut off in their place. Take heed, 12:37 regard not iniquity: for this hast thou chosen rather than 12:41 affliction. Behold, God exalteth by his power: who teacheth like 12:47 him? Who hath enjoined him his way? or who can say, Thou hast 12:51 wrought iniquity? Remember that thou magnify his work, 12:55 which men behold. Every man may see it: man may behold it afar 13:00 off. Behold, God is great, and we know him not, neither can the 13:06 number of his years be searched out. For he maketh small 13:09 the drops of water: they pour down rain according to the 13:13 vapour thereof: which the clouds do drop and distil upon man 13:18 abundantly. Also can any understand the spreadings of 13:23 the clouds, or the noise of his tabernacle? Behold, he spreadeth 13:27 his light upon it, and covereth the bottom of the sea. 13:30 For by them judgeth he the people; he giveth meat 13:35 in abundance. With clouds he covereth the light; 13:38 and commandeth it not to shine by the cloud that cometh betwixt 13:42 The noise thereof sheweth concerning, the cattle also 13:46 concerning the vapour. Continuing with Job, chapter 37. 13:50 At this also my heart trembleth, and is moved out of his place. 13:55 Hear attentively the noise of his voice, and the sound that 13:59 goeth out of his mouth. He directeth it under the whole 14:02 heaven, and his lightning unto the ends of the earth. 14:05 After it a voice roareth: he thundereth with the voice of 14:09 his excellency; and he will not stay them when his voice 14:11 is heard. God thundereth marvellously with his voice; 14:15 great things doeth he, which we cannot comprehend. 14:19 For he saith to the snow, Be thou on the earth; 14:22 likewise to the small rain, and to the great rain 14:25 of his strength. He sealeth up the hand of every man; 14:28 that all men may know his work. Then the beasts go into dens, 14:33 and remain in their places. Please join me again next time 14:38 to continue this story of Job. Goodbye. |
