00:18 I am Kelly Mowrer and today we are going to be 00:20 reading together from the Book of Jeremiah. 00:22 But let's pray together before we start. 00:25 Dear Heavenly Father, thank you again 00:27 for this time in Your presence with Your word. 00:30 Please send the Holy Spirit, to show us the message 00:34 that You have for us today. 00:36 And that we may obey and walk in Your ways and live. 00:40 We love You so much 00:41 and thank You for loving us, amen. 00:45 When we were last together, 00:46 we were reading in the Book of Jeremiah 00:49 and the King Zedekiah is consulting with Jeremiah. 00:53 Jeremiah is telling him 00:55 that the Chaldeans are going to come against you. 00:58 And if you will go out to them 01:00 and basically surrender to them, then you will live. 01:03 You will be spared, the city will not be burnt. 01:07 But if you don't go out, 01:09 then you will die and the city will be burnt. 01:12 We are gonna pick up the story now 01:14 with Jeremiah and the king consulting together. 01:17 In Jeremiah 38 verse 19 01:20 and this is the King James Version. 01:24 And Zedekiah the king said unto Jeremiah, 01:27 I am afraid of the Jews 01:29 that are fallen to the Chaldeans, 01:30 lest they deliver me into their hand, 01:32 and they mock me. 01:34 But Jeremiah said, they shall not deliver thee. 01:37 Obey, I beseech thee, the voice of the Lord, 01:40 which I speak unto thee, so it shall be well unto thee, 01:44 and thy soul shall live. 01:46 But if thou refuse to go forth, 01:49 this is the word that the Lord hath shewed me, 01:51 And, behold, all the women that are left 01:53 in the king of Judah's house 01:54 shall be brought forth to the king of Babylon's princes, 01:57 and those women shall say, Thy friends have set thee on, 02:00 and have prevailed against thee, 02:01 thy feet are sunk in the mire, 02:03 and they are turned away back. 02:05 So they shall bring out all thy wives 02:07 and thy children to the Chaldeans, 02:09 and thou shalt not escape out of their hand, 02:11 but shalt be taken by the hand of the king of Babylon, 02:14 and thou shalt cause this city to be burned with fire. 02:18 Then said Zedekiah unto Jeremiah, 02:21 Let no man know of these words, 02:23 and thou shalt not die. 02:25 But if the princes hear that I have talked with thee, 02:27 and they come unto thee, and say unto thee, 02:29 Declare unto us now what thou hast said unto the king, 02:32 hide it not from us, 02:33 and we will not put thee to death, 02:35 also what the king said unto thee, 02:37 Then thou shalt say unto them, 02:39 I presented my supplication before the king, 02:41 that he would not cause me 02:43 to return to Jonathan's house, to die there. 02:46 Then came all the princes unto Jeremiah, and asked him, 02:50 and he told them according to all these words 02:53 that the king had commanded. 02:55 So they left off speaking with him, 02:56 for the matter was not perceived. 02:59 So Jeremiah abode in the court of the prison 03:03 until the day that Jerusalem was taken, 03:06 and he was there when Jerusalem was taken. 03:10 Continuing the story now in Jeremiah Chapter 39 03:14 and this is the King James Version. 03:17 In the ninth year of Zedekiah king of Judah, 03:20 in the tenth month, came Nebuchadrezzar king of Babylon 03:25 and all his army against Jerusalem, 03:28 and they besieged it. 03:30 And in the eleventh year of Zedekiah, 03:32 in the fourth month, the ninth day of the month, 03:35 the city was broken up. 03:36 And all the princes of the king of Babylon came in, 03:40 and sat in the middle gate, even Nergalsharezer, 03:44 Samgarnebo, Sarsechim, Rabsaris, Nergalsharezer, 03:50 Rabmag, with all the residue 03:51 of the princes of the king of Babylon. 03:54 And it came to pass, 03:56 that when Zedekiah the king of Judah saw them, 03:58 and all the men of war, then they fled, 04:01 and went forth out of the city by night, 04:03 by the way of the king's garden, 04:05 by the gate betwixt the two walls, 04:08 and he went out the way of the plain. 04:11 But the Chaldeans' army pursued after them, 04:15 and overtook Zedekiah in the plains of Jericho, 04:18 and when they had taken him, they brought him up 04:21 to Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon 04:23 to Riblah in the land of Hamath, 04:26 where he gave judgment upon him. 04:29 Then the king of Babylon slew the sons of Zedekiah 04:32 in Riblah before his eyes, 04:35 also the king of Babylon slew all the nobles of Judah. 04:39 Moreover he put out Zedekiah's eyes, 04:42 and bound him with chains, to carry him to Babylon. 04:46 And the Chaldeans burned the king's house, 04:49 and the houses of the people, with fire, 04:52 and brake down the walls of Jerusalem. 04:55 Then Nebuzaradan the captain of the guard carried away 05:00 captive into Babylon the remnant of the people 05:02 that remained in the city, 05:03 and those that fell away, that fell to him, 05:06 with the rest of the people that remained. 05:08 But Nebuzaradan the captain of the guard 05:10 left of the poor of the people, 05:13 which had nothing, in the land of Judah, 05:15 and gave them vineyards and fields at the same time. 05:18 Now Nebuchadrezzar king of Babylon 05:22 gave charge concerning Jeremiah to Nebuzaradan 05:26 the captain of the guard, saying, 05:28 Take him, and look well to him, 05:31 and do him no harm, but do unto him 05:34 even as he shall say unto thee. 05:38 So Nebuzaradan the captain of the guard sent, 05:41 and Nebushasban, Rabsaris, 05:44 and Nergalsharezer, Rabmag, 05:47 and all the king of Babylon's princes, 05:49 Even they sent, and took Jeremiah 05:51 out of the court of the prison, 05:53 and committed him unto Gedaliah the son of Ahikam 05:57 the son of Shaphan, that he should carry him home, 06:01 so he dwelt among the people. 06:03 Now the word of the Lord came unto Jeremiah, 06:06 while he was shut up in the court of the prison, 06:08 saying, Go and speak to Ebedmelech the Ethiopian, 06:13 saying, Thus saith the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel, 06:17 Behold, I will bring my words upon this city for evil, 06:21 and not for good, 06:23 and they shall be accomplished in that day before thee. 06:26 But I will deliver thee in that day, 06:28 saith the Lord, and thou shalt not be given 06:31 into the hand of the men of whom thou art afraid. 06:35 For I will surely deliver thee, 06:37 and thou shalt not fall by the sword, 06:39 but thy life shall be for a prey unto thee, 06:42 because thou hast put thy trust in me, saith the Lord. 06:47 Continuing in Jeremiah Chapter 40 06:50 and this is the King James Version. 06:53 The word that came to Jeremiah from the Lord, 06:56 after that Nebuzaradan the captain of the guard 06:59 had let him go from Ramah, 07:00 when he had taken him being bound in chains 07:03 among all that were carried away captive 07:06 of Jerusalem and Judah, 07:07 which were carried away captive unto Babylon. 07:11 And the captain of the guard took Jeremiah, 07:13 and said unto him, 07:15 The Lord thy God hath pronounced 07:17 this evil upon this place. 07:20 Now the Lord hath brought it, 07:21 and done according as he hath said, 07:24 because ye have sinned against the Lord, 07:26 and have not obeyed his voice, 07:28 therefore this thing is come upon you. 07:32 And now, behold, I loose thee this day from the chains 07:37 which were upon thine hand. 07:39 If it seem good unto thee to come with me into Babylon, 07:43 come, and I will look well unto thee, 07:47 but if it seem ill unto thee to come with me into Babylon, 07:51 forbear, behold, all the land is before thee, 07:55 whither it seemeth good 07:56 and convenient for thee to go, thither go. 08:01 Now while he was not yet gone back, 08:03 he said, Go back also to Gedaliah the son of Ahikam 08:06 the son of Shaphan, whom the king of Babylon 08:09 hath made governor over the cities of Judah, 08:11 and dwell with him among the people, 08:13 or go whosesoever it seemeth convenient unto thee to go. 08:18 So the captain of the guard 08:19 gave him victuals and a reward, and let him go. 08:22 Then went Jeremiah unto Gedaliah 08:25 the son of Ahikam to Mizpah, 08:27 and dwelt with him among the people 08:29 that were left in the land. 08:31 Now when all the captains of the forces 08:34 which were in the fields, even they and their men, 08:37 heard that the king of Babylon had made Gedaliah 08:41 the son of Ahikam governor in the land, 08:43 and had committed unto him men, 08:45 and women, and children, and of the poor of the land, 08:48 of them that were not carried away 08:49 captive to Babylon, 08:52 Then they came to Gedaliah to Mizpah, 08:55 even Ishmael the son of Nethaniah, 08:58 and Johanan and Jonathan the sons of Kareah, 09:01 and Seraiah the son of Tanhumeth, 09:04 and the sons of Ephai the Netophathite, 09:07 and Jezaniah the son of a Maachathite, 09:12 they and their men. 09:13 And Gedaliah the son of Ahikam 09:15 the son of Shaphan sware unto them 09:17 and to their men, saying, 09:19 Fear not to serve the Chaldeans, 09:22 dwell in the land, and serve the king of Babylon, 09:25 and it shall be well with you. 09:27 As for me, behold, I will dwell at Mizpah, 09:31 to serve the Chaldeans, which will come unto us, 09:33 but ye, gather ye wine, and summer fruits, and oil, 09:39 and put them in your vessels, 09:40 and dwell in your cities that ye have taken. 09:44 Likewise when all the Jews that were in Moab, 09:47 and among the Ammonites, and in Edom, 09:49 and that were in all the countries, 09:52 heard that the king of Babylon had left a remnant of Judah, 09:56 and that he had set over them 09:58 Gedaliah the son of Ahikam the son of Shaphan, 10:02 Even all the Jews returned out of all places 10:05 whither they were driven, and came to the land of Judah, 10:08 to Gedaliah, unto Mizpah, 10:10 and gathered wine and summer fruits very much. 10:14 Moreover Johanan the son of Kareah, 10:18 and all the captains of the forces 10:20 that were in the fields, came to Gedaliah to Mizpah, 10:23 And said unto him, dost thou certainly know that Baalis 10:29 the king of the Ammonites hath sent Ishmael 10:32 the son of Nethaniah to slay thee? 10:35 But Gedaliah the son of Ahikam believed them not. 10:39 Then Johanan the son of Kareah 10:41 spake to Gedaliah in Mizpah secretly saying, 10:45 Let me go, I pray thee, 10:46 and I will slay Ishmael the son of Nethaniah, 10:49 and no man shall know it, wherefore should he slay thee, 10:53 that all the Jews which are gathered unto thee 10:55 should be scattered, 10:56 and the remnant in Judah perish? 10:59 But Gedaliah the son of Ahikam 11:01 said unto Johanan the son of Kareah, 11:04 Thou shalt not do this thing, 11:06 for thou speakest falsely of Ishmael. 11:11 Continuing now in Jeremiah Chapter 41 11:13 and this is the King James Version. 11:17 Now it came to pass in the seventh month, 11:19 that Ishmael the son of Nethaniah the son of Elishama, 11:23 of the seed royal, and the princes of the king, 11:26 even ten men with him, 11:29 came unto Gedaliah the son of Ahikam to Mizpah, 11:34 and there they did eat bread together in Mizpah. 11:38 Then arose Ishmael the son of Nethaniah, 11:40 and the ten men that were with him, 11:41 and smote Gedaliah the son of Ahikam 11:44 the son of Shaphan with the sword, 11:47 and slew him, whom the king of Babylon 11:50 had made governor over the land. 11:52 Ishmael also slew all the Jews that were with him, 11:55 even with Gedaliah, at Mizpah, 11:58 and the Chaldeans that were found there, 12:00 and the men of war. 12:02 And it came to pass the second day 12:04 after he had slain Gedaliah, and no man knew it, 12:08 That there came certain from Shechem, 12:10 from Shiloh, and from Samaria, 12:12 even fourscore men, having their beards shaven, 12:15 and their clothes rent, and having cut themselves, 12:18 with offerings and incense in their hand, 12:21 to bring them to the house of the Lord. 12:24 And Ishmael the son of Nethaniah 12:26 went forth from Mizpah to meet them, 12:29 weeping all along as he went, and it came to pass, 12:33 as he met them, he said unto them, 12:36 Come to Gedaliah the son of Ahikam. 12:39 And it was so, when they came into the midst of the city, 12:42 that Ishmael the son of Nethaniah slew them, 12:45 and cast them into the midst of the pit, 12:47 he, and the men that were with him. 12:50 But ten men were found among them 12:52 that said unto Ishmael, Slay us not, 12:55 for we have treasures in the field, 12:57 of wheat, and of barley, and of oil, and of honey. 13:00 So he forbare, and slew them not among their brethren. 13:04 Now the pit wherein 13:05 Ishmael had cast all the dead bodies of the men, 13:08 whom he had slain because of Gedaliah, 13:11 was it which Asa the king had made 13:13 for fear of Baasha king of Israel, 13:16 and Ishmael the son of Nethaniah 13:18 filled it with them that were slain. 13:21 Then Ishmael carried away 13:22 captive all the residue of the people 13:24 that were in Mizpah, even the king's daughters, 13:27 and all the people that remained in Mizpah, 13:29 whom Nebuzaradan the captain of the guard 13:32 had committed to Gedaliah the son of Ahikam, 13:35 and Ishmael the son of Nethaniah 13:36 carried them away captive, 13:38 and departed to go over to the Ammonites. 13:41 But when Johanan the son of Kareah, 13:44 and all the captains of the forces that were with him, 13:47 heard of all the evil that Ishmael 13:50 the son of Nethaniah had done, Then they took all the men, 13:55 and went to fight with Ishmael the son of Nethaniah, 13:58 and found him by the great waters 14:00 that are in Gibeon. 14:02 Now it came to pass, 14:03 that when all the people which were with Ishmael 14:05 saw Johanan the son of Kareah, 14:07 and all the captains of the forces that were with him, 14:10 then they were glad. 14:12 So all the people that Ishmael had carried away 14:14 captive from Mizpah cast about and returned, 14:18 and went unto Johanan the son of Kareah. 14:22 But Ishmael the son of Nethaniah 14:24 escaped from Johanan with eight men, 14:26 and went to the Ammonites. 14:29 Then took Johanan the son of Kareah, 14:30 and all the captains of the forces that were with him, 14:33 all the remnant of the people 14:34 whom he had recovered from Ishmael the son of Nethaniah, 14:38 from Mizpah, after that he had slain 14:40 Gedaliah the son of Ahikam. |
