05:24 boggling number. So it's wonderful to be able to speak to a Colosseum full of people
05:28 from this friendly church. And that's really what's happening. Well, tonight,
05:33 we're going to be talking about not so much a particular stories, but a series of
05:39 vignettes about a great Bible character and that person is Mary. It's sometimes known as
05:49 Mary Magdalen and I I was so fascinating is that wind through the Bible and I found
05:52 out that. In this is in many ways the most devoted disciple of Jesus. New no sudden it
06:00 possible because Mary was not an apostle, but she was a disciple. To see where the
06:05 Lord brought her from and letter to. I just found it so inspiring to actually wrote a
06:11 book about one of 15 years ago called and Jesus Feet. The Gospel, according to Mary
06:17 Magdalen because you study and there is about 7 times that Mary appears in the Gospels
06:25 with Jesus, almost always at his feet at some point in the story. And I'll tell you up
06:30 front what they are. Here's what our sign in us tonight. We're going to see Mary Jesus
06:35 feet in shame. Mary and Jesus Feet in study. Mary and Jesus feet in sorrow. In sacrifice
06:46 in surrender. In service and in song. And you're going to see there's about 12 times.
06:55 You find the phrase Mary Magdalen. But Mary Magdalen is not the only time that she
07:01 appears that not only under that name. And so let's begin our study by going with me to
07:06 the book of John Gospel of John Chapter 8 and we'll start with the first verse. And this
07:10 is AM an amazing passage of scripture. But Jesus went to the Mount of Olives and early
07:19 in the morning. He came again into the temple and he sat down and he taught them. Then
07:27 the scribes and Pharisees brought to him a woman. Caught in adultery doesn't give her
07:31 name. But you see later on talks about something that happened with Mary and one
07:36 gospel just says a certain woman. You'll understand why as we proceed. Caught the act
07:41 of adultery. And when they had said her in the midst, they said to Jesus teacher, this
07:50 woman was caught in adultery in the very act. It's not like, you know, rumors going
07:53 around. And it says. No Moses and the law commanded us that such should be s*****. But
08:01 what do you say this? They said tempting him that they might have something to which
08:06 to accuse him. Now what they're doing is. The religious leaders were very
08:13 jealous of Jesus and his popularity in his power. His influence for the people, even
08:17 pilot during the trial of Christ. It says he knew that they handed him over because
08:22 of jealousy. And they're trying to find some way to take out. And they thought,
08:30 well, if we do it, the mom's going to be mad at us because people love and we've got to
08:34 get the Romans to do it. And only the Romans since they occupied Israel. Only the
08:40 Roman courts could pronounce the death But according to the Jewish law, if a person was
08:45 caught in the act of adultery, man or woman. They would be still. And so they thought we
08:52 will set this woman up. We know she's got a reputation. we'll bring it to the temple.
08:57 And when Jesus says yes, the law, most assist owner with donor, then we'll run to the
09:01 Romans and say, you know, this religious teacher says that he doesn't have to obey the law,
09:06 Caesar. He just pronounced the death penalty on somebody. The Romans would arrest him. If
09:12 Jesus said no, we're not allowed to do that because we're under the Romans. Then
09:15 they get the people upset because they think he's loyal to the Romans. The thought
09:19 we've there's no way out. So this is a very clever trap. And so there's this woman. Who
09:28 I believe is Mary only explain. Sometimes she's of called Mary Mary of Bethany.
09:36 She has a family that is in not Jerusalem. Lazarus assistant Martha and she stays
09:40 with him. She has fallen in her life and she set up business in a place called
09:47 Magdalen. Magna is on the shore of the Sea of Galilee. It's where the Roman soldiers
09:51 went for vacation. And they had a lot of Braunfels there and to say that someone is
09:57 Mary from Angola, his part me, it's like saying, Mary, from the strip. If you know what
10:04 I'm saying, friends are in Las Vegas. In case you wonder what I'm talking about. just the 2
10:10 words tell a story all by themselves. This happens during the feast when there's
10:15 a crowd in Jerusalem and his business interests one. So she set up. They don't care about
10:18 her. They're going to use or they're willing to kill her to make a point. They set it up.
10:26 You notice the man is not there. If you're caught in the act. Last time I checked, that
10:31 requires at least 2 people. All right. But he's not there. And helps us understand this
10:36 is a trap. And all of us. And can you imagine your? In one of the most personal
10:44 circumstances and all the religious leaders charge him. And before you can get
10:50 yourself together, they drag you off. To the holiest place in the world. With everyone
10:55 talking. And they throw you down at the feet of the holiest man who's ever lived.
11:02 That's got to be a mortifying experience. So this is what's going on. You only find this
11:09 story here in the gospel of John. Now, Moses said she should be s*****. But what do
11:14 you say? But Jesus stoop down and he wrote on the ground with his finger as though he
11:20 did not hear. You know, I don't think like very much when we accuse one another.
11:26 And here they were pointing fingers and Mary and though she was guilty. He wasn't
11:30 pleased to hear it. And then he writing, you have to ask yourself the question, what is
11:38 Jesus right now? Doesn't tell us, but we can make a pretty educated guess. The 3 times in
11:41 the Bible when got rights. Now both the 10 Commandments with his finger on Stone. judgment
11:51 on the walls of battle and handwriting on the wall. You for that story. And here Jesus
11:56 is now writing sins in the dust of the temple floor. In the Jewish temple. They had
12:01 white and black marble kind like a checkerboard, big squares and on the Black
12:06 Stones because of the dust in the traffic of the people. You can write very clearly. So
12:09 he's writing. And I think he's writing sins of his accused of her accusers. So he's acting
12:18 like he doesn't hear them, but they continue to press him. They're not paying attention
12:21 to what is right. And if it uses you know what, they're talking to him. And so they
12:25 pressed him when they continue to asking them. John Chapter 8 verse 7, he raised himself up.
12:31 He got to be careful. And Michael stands up. He raised himself up and said to them he
12:36 who is without Among you, let him throw a stone at her first. And then he stood down
12:43 again and road. And he starts to write their particular And while they're figuring out how
12:53 to respond to what he says, they look at what he's writing and he's writing very specific
12:57 things that only got to know about them. And as they hear his challenge and they read
13:05 their sins one by one, the rocks they had brought to throw it. Mary fall. From
13:10 there, paralyze hands. And they go out beginning at the Elders because they have the
13:16 longest record of Sen. Even unto the least. One by one. They went out. And Jesus was
13:24 left alone in the woman standing in the midst of this point, she stood up. She was
13:28 cast his feet before. When Jesus raised himself up. He saw no one with the woman. He
13:34 said her woman wear your accusers has no man condemned you. Now wasn't because she
13:40 wasn't guilty. She was guilty. But there was no man there to condemn her. She said no one
13:48 lord. He said neither do I condemn you. OK? A lot of people stop right there. And
13:57 people go will be Jesus. The adult OK. Nobody sent. He's a full as I did not come into
14:05 the world to condemn the world were already condemn. We have sent the penalty is a death.
14:14 The condemnations got sun's light into the world. The middle of darkness rather than
14:16 light. We are already under a death sentence. He didn't come to condemn. He says I've come
14:21 to seek and to save that, which was lost. So he said, I don't condemn you. I didn't
14:27 come for that reason. He said go, you're forgiven, you're free. And send no more. He
14:35 said what you have done, his ascent. How could Jesus say that? end of the law of Moses
14:42 matter then that still stands true. That adultery was yes, ID. And if everyone was to die
14:48 right now, who is guilty of Sen this room would be empty. Because the Bible says all
14:54 have sinned and anything in the penalty is death. Sometimes we, you know,
15:01 accentuate some sins above the others, but they all put Jesus on the cross. And so he sent
15:05 going send no more. I think that there was an unspoken communication, but she picked
15:13 up through the Holy Spirit that the reason that he could let her go free. It's because
15:18 he was going to take her penalty. And that's the only reason that you and I go free.
15:23 She ended up following him. The Bible tells us are several women that follow Jesus
15:31 administered of their substance later tells area. Bethany was a woman who had a
15:35 bad reputation of people said don't let her touch you for. She is a center. And I think
15:39 that John wanting to protect her identity because she was a prominent person in the
15:42 church, told the story the others left the story out. John told the story, but he
15:46 said I'm not going donate. And from that moment on, she began to follow Jesus. And she her
15:54 many times why she followed him to the apostles and probably said it half a dozen
15:57 times. I'm going to Jerusalem. I will be betrayed in the hands of centers. I'll be
16:04 crucified and all rise. A 3rd day. She understood that he was going to die for her
16:08 sense. I think she had an understanding the others did not have. So here we see Mary
16:15 in her first encounter with Jesus. She's in the temple. And she's and shamed. A lot of
16:21 people say Pastor Doug, if I went to the church, it would fall in. It sounds so simple.
16:28 Just like the temple of being on the sands and they're afraid of coming into the
16:30 temple. But, you know, the best place to go when you're in trouble is to the presence
16:36 of God. This is what Mary did and he forgave. Are there. So if you know anybody that
16:40 things aren't is not good enough to go to church, that is really silly. That's like
16:43 parents telling their children. Could you please clean up so you can take a
16:46 bath? You don't think that. So you can take about to take advanced. You can clean up
16:54 some people think I've got to straighten out my life so I can come to Jesus. We don't
16:59 straighten out your lysine come to Jesus. You come to You can straighten out. heard
17:04 about this one man that pastor kept inviting him to church. His family came as wife come.
17:06 He didn't come. The pastor and I get things straightened out come when I get things
17:10 straightened out all come. Finally came all straightened out in a coffin. You don't
17:18 want to wait that long. Friends. You want to come to Jesus. Don't be afraid to come
17:23 to that whole episode. You see Mary, she's in Sheen in the Temple. said, I don't go. I
17:30 have not come to condemn you, but to say now just want to make a point. You said Pastor
17:37 Doug, you area Bethany and Mary Magdalen are the same person I believe so. And it's
17:43 for biblical reasons. Let me give you a little list of white who is Mary Magdalen.
17:49 Well, first of all, it says both Mary of Bethany, Mary Magdalen. It says there are
17:53 women that have means they've got money. And you'll see that they buy an expensive gift.
17:58 Both, of course, have a name area. But that was not that uncommon. That sort of the
18:01 Greek name for marry him. A lot of Jews use that the both unmarried. The both always a
18:07 Jesus feet. They both evidently have bad reputations and then most interesting
18:13 Leigh, you never hear the mentioned in the same story, but they both seem incredibly
18:18 devoted because of the same person. Sometimes Jesus is called Jesus of Nazareth or
18:23 Jesus. The carpenters cent if they've got several named Simon told Simon Simon Peter.
18:29 And then Simon, the scent of Jonah. And so sometimes they use different names. But this
18:34 I think is the same. Mary. Now the next time we observe her and Jesus feet, you have to
18:40 turn in your Bible to the book of Luke Luke Chapter 10 verse 38. And this is I think one of
18:44 the most important things. First she has this encounter with the Lord in the House of
18:51 the Lord is transformed by this. So you read Inverse. 38. Luke. Chapter 10? Now it
19:01 happened that as they went, he entered a certain village and a certain woman named Martha
19:07 welcomed him into her house. She had a sister called Mary Notice. It's Martha's House
19:12 but memories there. She had a sister called Mary who also said a Jesus feet and heard
19:17 his word. But Martha was distracted with much serving and she finally approaches
19:24 Jesus wants it more. Do you not care that my sisters left me to serve You know, Jesus
19:30 often would go and stay at the house of Mary and Lazarus. That was her brother in
19:35 Bethany, not far from Mount of Olives in the Garden of Gethsemane. And when Jesus
19:39 showed up, he brought 12 friends with him. And then that the law for young. And
19:44 there's a lot of serving in cooking going on. This may have also been the same time
19:49 where it says there was a dinner in Bethany and Marys there as well. So anyway,
19:54 Martha's always serving. And I just I'm so thankful for the market is in the church that
19:59 are there. Good servants are busy. They are active, but there's a danger you can get
20:03 so busy doing the work of the Lord. You forget the Lord of the work. And we're not see by
20:08 our works. We're saved by a relationship with Jesus. You know, when the Lord comes.
20:16 Jesus is going to declare it a lot of people. I don't know. You. And they're going to put
20:23 We taught in your street, 3 cast out devils. We did many wonderful works. We cook from
20:29 potlucks. We were in with the deacons and those are all great things.
20:33 >> But he'll say, I don't know. You. How do you get to know somebody? You know, first
20:39 of all, very simple. Truth, if you forget everything else, I say tonight, please remember
20:43 this. You cannot be saved. If you don't know, begun. You can got a few less. You love him.
20:54 You not say by obeying him, but if you love and you will obey him. You cannot love God.
20:59 If you don't know him. You're not gonna love him and know him unless you communicate
21:04 with him. He speaks to you through his spirit. But principally through his word
21:12 sometimes even preachers, believe it or not, You speak to him when you pray. If
21:19 you're going to fall in love with someone you need to communicate. Some people are
21:23 wanting to fall in love with Jesus and not letting Jesus talk to him. doing all the
21:26 talking. know, anyone like that. So we're giving you this and give me that given keeping
21:31 out of trouble, saving from the savings from that. But they're not listening. God
21:34 speaks to us through his work. She sat at Jesus Feet. A posture of submission,
21:40 humility. And heard his word. And Martha said maker get up and help me work for you and
21:51 listen to what Jesus is Martha. Martha, you can tell he loved her. You don't insult
21:56 the person that your hopes, you know. You are worried and troubled about many things.
22:02 But one thing is needed. One thing is needed. And Mary has chosen that good part, which
22:09 will not be taken from her. I'm not going throw away. She's sitting at my feet
22:13 drinking in the word, you know, friends. This is one of the most important things that
22:18 happens when the word of God as open and got speaks to us. The Bible is inspired. So
22:24 we're title in the series. Inspirational would have inspired. It had been the
22:27 programs before in can't meetings where I'm sitting on the platform. I'm waiting
22:32 preach and there is a parade of announcements and programs and products and things that
22:37 go by. And everybody's looking at their watch and I can see they're getting hungry here.
22:41 Their stomachs ground or watches are going off. Finally tends to Now Pastor Doug, if
22:45 you could bring us the word. feel like the standing and doing the benediction and
22:51 thank them for coming. Because the well worn out now and we kind of get the word anyone
22:57 Can you say man, you know And sometimes I think I'm going to preach and you do all your
23:03 announcement for anyone that wants to stay here. need to that archers. wanted to hear
23:10 the word. We need a devotional life. And the morning is the best time got rain down bread
23:18 from heaven for the children of Israel. Every morning they had to go out and gather it
23:23 and needed and they couldn't work it it. But he provided it. But they had to fix it and
23:30 God has his word. The Bible says it's not very far from you. We need to reach out and
23:35 today you're without excuse because if you say I can't read what you can hear, you
23:39 can just have your phone read the Bible to now. You get a CD and listen in your car. We do
23:45 that. Also, good sermons. absolute read the Bible to you, but studying the word.
23:54 And God speaking with roots where the Bible changed my life. Atheist started reading
23:56 the Bible. And just transform my life to realize it was a and I read a lot of religious
24:03 books. There's nothing like the vinyl. Spent time with God in the morning. You've got a
24:10 physical body that has physical needs. You have a spiritual Bonnie that his
24:15 spiritual needs. I remember I living on the streets shortly after becoming a Christian. I
24:25 told you live in a cave and sometimes stayed the band and buildings and as in Palm
24:29 Springs and there was a dedicated Christian man there. We all called him brother hair
24:33 a lot, even only his brother, Harold, he was a Jewish convert to Christianity. And
24:39 the guy was such a committed Christian. He would wake up every morning like 3 or 4 and
24:43 start reading his Bible and he can read it in Greek. Hebrew and English. He didn't go to
24:48 the hospital and even quote, scripture from memory to the people. He was a
24:52 self-appointed chaplain. He go to the Palm Springs Hospital, visit the rooms, encourage
24:55 people, pray with them, quote, scripture to him. And I heard him, quote, Scripture, his
24:58 voice for Trimble. Just the fact that he could take the word of God on his lips, moved
25:02 him. I saw him train his face from light up. This man knew the Lord. So I'm walking down
25:09 the street one day. He knew me because I was around the streets and he care a lot
25:13 about all the young we call them. Jesus freaks. He's young teenagers that have come to
25:16 Christ and he saw me stopped me said, dad, how are you doing? I was struggling a
25:21 little bit trying to live right? He said that. How long can you hold your breath? I
25:29 didn't ISP that, but I'm glad because I was very proud of how long I can hold my breath.
25:33 Even when I was smoking, I could hold my breath for 4 minutes and 10 seconds.
25:37 Because I used to do free diving. I said 4 minutes and 10 seconds. expected him to be
25:43 impressed. He said you shouldn't go any longer than that without rain. He said how
25:49 often do you eat? The 2 or 3 times a day? So that's how often you should read or
25:55 meditate on God's word. So what can happen, Doug, if you don't get any exercise. So I
26:01 get weak and flabby. So that's what happens. Your faith if you don't use it and you don't
26:07 share it. So you've got a physical body with physical needs and there are laws that
26:12 you cannot deny and you will suffer if you ignore those laws. You have a spiritual
26:16 body. It is real and you have spiritual needs and you will suffer if you do not obey
26:21 those laws. You need to read the word of God. That is the bread of life. You need to
26:23 pray. That is the altar of incense. That is the breath. And you need to exercise your
26:33 faith in the holy place of the Jewish temple. There were 3 things. There's a candlestick.
26:39 You've got to let your light shine exercise your faith. It was an altar of incense.
26:43 That's prayer and there's a table with bread on it. That's the word of God. These are the
26:49 3 disciplines in the Christian life. You do those things and you will live. You will grow
26:53 babies. Don't worry about growing. Do they? A breezy? I don't breathe. You have a very
26:58 sad occurrence. They eat. They wiggle. If you're doing those things, you will grow in your
27:08 fate. Show me a backflip Christian. I'll show you someone who is neglecting one
27:13 of those 3 things. Mary Jesus Feet and she heard the word. We see her not only at his
27:18 feet in shame. We here at his feet in study after you come to the Lord, you need to study
27:25 then we see your next. She's actually says feet. Now she's in sorrow because after she
27:30 has been fed and after she's been say she's not worried about.
27:34 >> Brother turned with me to the Gospel of John Chapter 11. Now. And I think just about
27:40 everyone here knows the story of one Jesus, greatest miracles. It is the
27:45 resurrection. One is arrests. And tells us Jesus had a friend in Laos was sick. He
27:53 was the brother of Mary and Martha. They sent a message to Jesus from Bethany, weigh up
27:58 to the Sea of Galilee Capernaum and said your friend that you love is sick. What
28:06 use is a healing. Everybody right left. He's going through towns where everybody's been
28:09 healed. The thought Jesus is going to drop everything and come down and but he doesn't.
28:13 He literally weights. Because sometimes God allows us to experience a real hard time in
28:22 order to strengthen our faith. So finally, dies. And Martha and Mary are just so
28:31 devastated. Not only about the death, but that Jesus didn't come. And it says that
28:37 finally, he comes down 4 days after last year's is dead and buried. And it says that when
28:42 Mary heard that he had come. Martha found Florida. If you've been here, my you could
28:47 hear my brother. He said your brother will live again. She said I know he's going to be
28:53 raised the last day. By the way, Lazarus was asleep. That's how the Bible refers to
28:56 death. terrible if are going right to him and he's brought him back to the grave. You
29:02 want to do that, your friend, would said he was asleep in the grave. And that I know you
29:09 rise in the resurrection of the last day. And he said I am the resurrection and the life.
29:15 This is John 11. 25 he believes in me, though, he may die yet. He will live in
29:21 whoever lives and believes in me will never die. Do you believe this? That's still
29:26 true today. Friends. If you believe in Jesus will never die. She said yes, Florida. I
29:30 believe you're the Christ, the son of God, who is to come into the world. Mary hears the
29:36 Jesus has come a messenger goes to the funeral and tells her she runs out to see Jesus
29:42 and you go to verse. 32, then Mary came to where Jesus was. She saw him. She fell down at
29:49 his feet. Interesting. She's always there. Saying Lord, if you have been here, my brother
29:55 would not have 9. Therefore, when Jesus saw her weeping, there she is again, weeping at
30:00 his feet. You know, sometimes. We must be broken, broken things. Bring 4th wife. It's
30:11 broken drain. The gives as Britain's broken clouds to give us rain and it's.
30:15 Sometimes it's a broken alabaster, vile that brings forth the sweet perfume. We're
30:18 getting to that just a minute. And it's a broken hearts and broken tears. bring a new life
30:26 sometimes before a new birth his peers. And Mary's weeping. For her brother. It's Now we
30:34 discovered in a previous study that there's a lot of people that are dead in trespasses
30:38 and sins. And the Bible tells us that that that is a symbol for death when a person is
30:45 lost, it represents death. And so here she is weeping at his feet. You and I have brothers
30:54 and sisters help in the world. We've got children's and friends that are dead. What is
30:57 Mary doing with Jesus for those that she loves? He's praying that his feet. He's a
31:02 weeping and pleading for her brother. That is dead. The Jesus would do something
31:07 miraculous and bring him back to life. And does he do it? Jesus leads them to the place
31:17 where is dead. He tells Martha Roll away the Stone She's very practical. She's a servant and
31:23 he says he realized where he's been dead for 4 days and it's not going to smell very good.
31:26 He's the did. I tell you to trust me. So roll away the stone. And Jesus spoke those
31:31 words and he said Lazarus come forth. DeJesus had not specified. Lazarus come forth.
31:38 Every grave in the world would have opened up. If you just said come forth. This allows
31:42 come forth. And they heard a stirring inside. And then out from the darkened whole. All
31:49 of from this money begin to hobble says he was all wrapped up. And Jesus said loose him
31:59 sometimes after raise. We still need to be loosed. And there was just pandemonium of
32:06 rejoicing through their prayers to Jesus for their dead loved ones. There was new
32:10 life. Some of you have been praying for people and you think the situation is
32:16 hopeless. You don't get more hopeless than someone being dead for 4 days. Their life
32:21 may stink. Like a corpse, but Jesus can cause a resurrection. Now, what does a
32:29 woman represents in Bible analogies? Who knows? Very calm. And this is like Bible
32:35 study one-on-one Bible says husbands love your wives, even as Christ loved the church and
32:39 gave himself or hurt. In the same way the church is to be preen for Christ or for those
32:46 who are dead in Sen. This is one of the most important missions. God brings us to
32:51 him. Then we go for him. Once we received, we have new life. Then we've got a burden to
32:57 sure that new life with others. So we see her at Jesus feed pleading for life. For
33:03 others. So she's at his feet in sorrow. Then you see this incredible story and you find
33:12 this in this story actually in John 12, Mark 14, Luke Chapter 7. It's called the Feast at
33:20 Simon's House. And we're going to read it to you from the Gospel of Luke Chapter. 36. So
33:24 there's a man. His name is Simon, another passage, one of the scriptures called him
33:28 Simon, the l****. Now Jesus would not go to the house of someone that had full stage
33:33 case of leprosy. The reason he's called Simon the l**** because he had been a l****
33:38 and he says he'll him. He's a pharisee who has been healed by Christ. The thing Jesus,
33:45 when Jesus comes, the Bethany is a wealthy man. He has a feast in Jesus honor and Jesus
33:51 comes in. There's a lot of guests there. The apostles were all there. In this story.
33:55 Mary also shows up. What I see Oh, there we go. Thank you very much. One of the fair
34:06 says ask him to eat with him and he went to the Pharisees house and sat down to eat. And
34:14 they hold a woman in the city who is a center and what calling woman and the center.
34:18 But if you look at the other gospels, which is Mary. That tells us who was. A woman in
34:26 the city who was a center when she knew Jesus at a table in the fares and House brought an
34:31 alabaster flask. It's very precious Stone flask, a fragrant oil, the oil they use
34:36 for 19 kings and priests and sacrifice. And she said it is feet behind him. Weeping as
34:44 you begin to wash his feet with her tears and wiped them with the hair of her head and
34:48 she kissed his feet. An anointed them was pregnant oil. And you read the other
34:54 gospels issue, not only anointed his feet, but then she stood up and reported on
34:56 his head and anointed his head. You know, Jesus was being anointed. The people who
35:03 got anointed in the Bible was Kings. Priests and a sacrifice. Jesus is our King.
35:11 Jesus is our priest, he I sacrifice Marriott his feet. He's where the church needs to
35:16 be in worshiping God. And she made this incredible sacrifice. Judas when ISIS is
35:21 going on these kind of annoyed. Because he's thinking. This is such an
35:28 expensive gift. You read the Gospel says this could have been sold for 300 an area and
35:31 giving to the poor. You can say this because he cared for the poor. He said because he
35:35 was a thief and he wanted to have a cut of interesting here you've got to do criticizing
35:41 Mary's Act of sacrifice. Interactive worship. She's willing to kiss to his feet
35:49 and sacrificing give to Jesus and worship him and serve him. Judah still from Jesus and he
35:53 kissed his face and betrayed him. 2 people in the Bible are recorded discussing Jesus. And
35:59 Mary. Huge is one of the highest position. He just does face and then betrayed him.
36:08 Sold him for money, Mary Custis feet and then gave. 2 attitudes. Both claim to be
36:14 religious. Very interesting. And Simon is watching this and everybody when she breaks is
36:22 vessel may smell this fragrant oil that's made for kings. Fills the room. She's not
36:29 wanting to be a spectacle, but she wanted to do something for Jesus because she knew Jesus
36:32 said I'm going to Jerusalem and I'm going to die. He said it several times with the
36:37 cycle, thought there were some spiritual meaning they didn't understand. Jesus is crossing
36:40 the sea. And you should be aware of the leaven of the pharisees and the disciples
36:47 are going because we forgot our brand, which got Arlen. She said no. speaking in
36:52 spiritual terms, it's not lunch. I just had 5,000 people and to be aware of the
36:55 doctrine of the pharisees. So now in Jesus, I'm going to Jerusalem and I'm going to be
37:00 betrayed. I'm going to die. Analyze the 3rd day and wondering what the spiritual
37:05 meaning of that going on. It's not spiritual its literal. But Mary got it. You know, most
37:10 people give a gift after they're She said, I want to give way life. A lot of people
37:17 are going to want to donate to the church. Right when they see Jesus coming in the
37:21 clouds. To be a little late. And it's like that sign in front of the Baptist Church
37:27 repent now and avoid the rush. Everybody can wait until it's too late. And the way things
37:35 are going in the world right now. And one of the best investment you can make in
37:40 spreading the gospel. No, it was not sorry about the investment he made in the arc
37:46 when it rose up on the waves. He floated a lot of stock. You might say. In that and have no
37:56 regrets because his family was on the boat. Can you Hunt? So Simon sees this. He's the host
38:01 of the dinner. And he's seen in himself. If Jesus was a prophet. He knows who and what
38:09 manner of woman. This is his touching him. She's the center. Everybody in town
38:13 knows about Mary. He's got that. That cottage business up and mangled. And she says
38:21 nobody was thinking another sign that he's got. He sits. I mean, I've got something to
38:25 say to you. Master say on. There was a certain creditor that had to debtors and one.
38:31 0, 500 in the area and the other 50. Just call it dollars. $500.50, $1. And when
38:38 they had nothing with which to repay, he freely forgave them. Both. Tell me which of the 2
38:43 do you think will love him more? Simon settle? I suppose the one who was forgiven more.
38:50 Jesus said you've rightly judge. He turned to the woman. It's it's I you see this one.
38:56 I entered your house. You gave me no water for my feet and it was customary back then she's
39:00 watched my feet with her tears and wipe them with the here for him. What does it mean?
39:05 Tears on the feet of Here's are some sorrow. Biden says he was a man of sorrows and
39:13 acquainted with grief. He bore our sorrows in our grief. On the feet means you walk
39:20 through them. He experienced them. Because you didn't wash my feet. He's wash my feet
39:24 with her tears and wiped them when they hear head. Bible tells us the New Testament, a
39:28 woman's tears or glory. He humbled or glory before the Lord of the lorry. He said you
39:35 didn't greet me with a kiss. Not on may seem weird to us, but you need read in the Bible
39:40 to greet the brother with a Holy Kiss. I went to a particular denominational, not
39:47 name one time. First time I visited there. And when I came in, all the greeted each
39:52 other, the kiss each other on the lips. And this is not in San Francisco. This is in New
39:58 Mexico. I'm not even going apologize for that. But anyway. I said, what's that?
40:11 don't worry. We just that with each other because the Bible says greet the brother with a
40:14 Holy Kiss. say yeah, but you go to the Middle East. It's kind of like Russia to kiss
40:17 you on the cheek, you know, and because your that says, we're minutes from anyway, I
40:22 don't want to take it too far. But he said you didn't agree with the case. It was common
40:27 to embrace and a kiss. Your guest so that you can see my feet. And it said her son's,
40:33 which are many are forgiven for. She loves much for too much. As for given the same,
40:40 loves much. And he turned the woman. He said not your sins are forgiven that she had
40:47 heard that before. I do not condemn you. That use the same. That we need to be big
40:56 centers in order to really love him. He was forgiven much love as much. Preach a sermon
41:02 once years ago in a lady came to me. She said I grew up in the church and I've never done
41:06 anything really scandals. And I just feel like I just don't love Jesus like you and some
41:10 of these other people. You sure these wild testimonies and got saves you. And I think
41:15 I got to go out there in the world and do some terrible probable debauchery things and
41:18 come back to the lower done and then really love the heaven forbid, she said that
41:26 it says he was forgiven much love as much tonight. Not done. I saw
41:30 >> I said Jesus was not saying you got to go commit a lot of scenes and then he said you
41:35 got to know how big your sins are that you've already committed. He who has a
41:40 concept of how much they've been forgiven. Love this much. You already a big center
41:46 friends. Congratulations. You qualify. The Bible says that every sin is deadly. went to
41:55 the cross for little sense. He went to the cross for our gossip in our indiscretions
41:59 and our pride. don't think you've got to go do something scandalous. The ones that Ward
42:07 had the hardest time reaching with a pro-death fair season. The scribes and the priests.
42:14 He didn't have it from reaching the the public annes Survival sense. So there she
42:19 is at his feet making this generous sacrifice. Then you go to the next point. In
42:25 surrender at the cross. I hearing the story about. During World War. One. They
42:36 often in these foxholes in the fighting was brutal and France an American Jeremy, bombing,
42:41 other This soldier. I was in a foxhole and the chaplain came to the front lines and he
42:49 jumped into the foxhole and missiles and grenades are flying around and the soldier
42:54 reached into his shirt. He pulled out the cross. He had been wearing. He's a chaplain.
42:58 How do you make this thing? Work? You'd be surprised how many people out there don't
43:04 understand how to make it work. How do you get the cross? The work? You can read
43:09 about this year. It says in the Gospel of John. When you read chapter, 23 actually
43:17 going Luke. 23. As all of his acquaintances and the women who followed him from Galilee
43:24 stood at a distance when Jesus on the cross, the standard, the distance, the disciples
43:28 for so come in Flint. But look at John 19 verse. 25. Now they're stood by the cross of
43:36 Jesus. His mother and his mother, sister, the wife of Cleopas and Mary Magdalen.
43:43 Mister Biden Cross. Mary Mag. everybody forsake him. She was not a shame she left. She
43:51 said. He stood by me when I was guilty. I'm going to stand by him when he's being falsely
43:58 accused. You can tell who your real friends are when everybody go else goes out.
44:03 Your real friends come in. She found Jesus on the cross and she knew he was there for her.
44:14 Even Peter Criss said Allman Forsake thee. I will not for safety. He denied the Lord and
44:18 he fled with everyone else. And then finally, they Howard back. The only people who
44:24 stood up for Jesus when he hung on the cross. Was married at the foot of cross. His own
44:30 mother who is with the Apostle John. They came later. And the thief on the cross who called
44:36 in the Lord and King. And Mary was there at his feet. As he's bleeding on the cross where
44:45 she knew she belonged for her sins. The friends. This is another one of those points
44:51 that I just hope you won't miss. If we could go back 2000 years. Some of us which get
45:01 just enough religion. We hear it as we grow up. It's almost like you get enough to
45:04 inoculate you against ever, really catching the real thing. Kind of like human
45:07 vaccine against. The real gospel. And we need to all get an industrial dose. Of what it
45:16 means. To be at the foot of the cross to know what Jesus suffered for us. He
45:23 experienced the most crew torture that had been devised by man back then the most
45:29 humiliating torture. And he suffered not just the physical pain, but all the guilt and
45:37 shame of the whole world. You think how can a person handle that? He was not just the man.
45:40 He was 100% got to. And he bore the creator bore the sins of his whole creation. And he
45:47 did it as though you're the only one who never sent. If you were the only one who ever
45:50 said he would have done it for you because he loves you. And Mary saw that she somehow
45:57 understood he's hanging in there for me. And so she had the devotion. She would stand
46:03 by him. The Bible says that if you're a Christian, you may be prosecuted. You may be month.
46:09 You know, the day's going to come when it's not popular to follow Jesus. I think today's
46:12 already here. And cry said if you are ashamed of me and this even when the generation all
46:19 be ashamed of you. But whoever confesses me in this evil, an adulterous generation, I will
46:25 confess his name before my father in the Angels in heaven. Do not be ashamed of
46:31 Jesus. People in the world in the most bizarre things because they're not ashamed of
46:34 the devil. They sir. Why are we ashamed of the Lord? She was willing to stand by the
46:38 cross. And we all need to be willing to stand up for Jesus. There she was. You know,
46:46 there's a wonderful quote from a classic book called The Desire of ages. It says unpaid
46:52 83, that book it would be well for us to spend a fun flower. Each state contemplating the
46:56 life of Christ. We should take it point by point let the imagination grass each scene,
47:02 especially the closing ones as the we that's dwell upon the great sacrifice for us. Our
47:08 confidence in him will be more constant. Our love will be quick and we'll be more deeply
47:12 imbued with the spirit. If we would be saved. At last, we must learn the lesson, the
47:18 penance and humiliation at the foot of the cross. You know that song. We saying Jesus
47:24 Keep me near the cross at the cross at the cross where I first saw the light. There's
47:28 so many songs about the cross. Paul said, I'm determined to know nothing among you accept
47:32 Jesus Christ and him crucified. And you think why would these Christians worship
47:37 and implement departure? It's not the cross that what happened there that
47:41 demonstrates God's love for us and the Devils brutality. It shows you it is basically the
47:49 the AKC says it is the ground 0 of the cosmic conflict between good and evil took
47:54 place in the cross there. You've got the devils level power in Jesus. Power of love
48:00 is demonstrated. The mob is saying crucify him, crucify him and uses the same father.
48:03 Forgive them. What a contrast. France. She saw that all play out there. She saw his love.
48:12 And his spots, even for his mother, EU clears last will for his mother as he's hanging
48:18 on the cross, worried about her. Next. You see here in service after 2. You know, the
48:25 Bible tells us you remark 15. That when Jesus died on the cross. That this in gave the
48:33 body to Joseph of their muffy, wealthy man who said I'm going to give him my my my grave. It
48:37 was a rich man's gray prophecy said that he would be buried with the rich. He die among
48:45 the wicked these crucified between fees and buried in a rich man's too. And it says
48:49 they took him down and they wrapped him in the win. And they lead in the sept liquor,
48:55 which was hewn out of rock. And it tells us that you look, Mary Magdalen and Mary, the
49:03 mother of Joses be held where he was late. The women there were overseen this process.
49:10 The wrapping the body of Jesus. They needed to go home and get ointment. But the
49:16 Sabbath was approaching and they talked. Jesus won't want us to do this on the side of.
49:19 We'll come back Sunday morning after the Sabbath was passed. You realize that it was still
49:23 important to Jesus at that point. I can't help but wonder when it came time to anoint.
49:30 The body after the and wrapped in gauze Mary probably was going to want to wrap his
49:34 feet. You're even Lou. 23 versus 55 in the women. Also that came with him from
49:42 Galilee, followed after and behold the CEP liquor and how his body was laid. Lou. 22 27,
49:49 who is greater. He sits at the table or he who serves yet. I'm among you as one who
49:56 serves. She was willing to serve. She helped oversee his body and and caring for him
50:04 and the anointing him and involving him. Now the church. bride of Christ needs to be
50:11 involved in service. Jesus said I'm your example and service. And then finally. We
50:17 see here it ends on a positive note. She is in song at the Resurrection. This is a
50:23 wonderful story turned to me to the Gospel of John Chapter 19. Well, chapter 20, I guess
50:27 at this point. Go to the Gospel of John Chapter 20 and got all these flags in my
50:33 Bible to help me find this quickly. Nothing is more boring than watching a pastor
50:37 on key turning is violent. When you read the different gospels and you put the story
50:44 together. Mary is the first one there. She gets early in the morning, but she sees no
50:51 one else is there in the stones in the way. So she starts to make your way back
50:55 up towards the city and she encounters the other women. She says how we roll away the
50:59 stone. They say we don't know, will go. Maybe some men will come and shop so they go back.
51:03 They see the stole is rolled away. Now. This to angel sitting inside. And all the
51:09 women leave. And then Peter and John Cho of except Mary states. Peter, John, look
51:16 inside. They heard from either one of the tomb was empty. The Roman soldiers have been
51:23 scared off by his angel that the Tomb of the Unknown. And Peter and John are so excited.
51:27 They leave. But the one who stays is Mary. And she's standing at the tomb and
51:38 people have been coming and going. The tomb is empty. And this is such a beautiful
51:40 story. You're looking for Sullivan, John, Chapter 20 verse 11. Mary stood outside
51:47 by the weeping. And she wept, she stooped down. And once again she looks in the tomb
51:55 and she saw 2 angels and white sitting one of the head and the other at the feet with the
51:59 body of Jesus said Lane. And they said her one. Why are you She said to them because
52:06 they've taken away. She doesn't say the Lord. They've taken with my Lord. And I know
52:11 not where they have lead him. Is he the Lord for you? Is he my Lord? Is your personal Lord
52:18 and savior. Now when she had said this, she turned around and saw Jesus and didn't know
52:26 was happens other times after the resurrection. Her eyes are probably already from weeping
52:31 through the weekend. And woman. Were you weeping? And the word woman there? You
52:38 know, one of my happy days, we used to call some hay woman. It was like derogatory. But,
52:42 you know, in Bible times the word he translates Madam, it's a term of respect and on or
52:48 so. I of all, do is be very nice to his mother's, a woman. But and Madam UK. Said one,
52:55 why are you weeping? Who are you seeking? She supposing him to be the gardener. She was
53:02 actually right. He was a gardener. The Lord planted a garden eastward in need. Jesus
53:10 wept in the garden of thsemane and said not my will. I will be done and where
53:13 he was crucified. There was a garden. And the Bible says into revelation. He's going to
53:18 bring us back to the garden and we need to gain from the Tree of life. Jesus is a
53:22 gardener. And he wants you to bring forth fruit. If you carry them away. Tell me where
53:31 you've laid him and I will take him away. That always is that amazes me. Because, you
53:39 know, I annoyed by these medieval paintings of Jesus fin and the indirect sic. And
53:45 Jesus was a carpenter. They did not have power tools back and he was a man's man. He
53:50 disappeared in. The crowd fisherman. They didn't know what you want. He wants. And
53:55 here you got Jesus. You know, you use the 6 foot man. And you've got the slight woman.
53:59 And she says I will carry him away. She thought maybe the Jews were afraid that the tomb
54:06 was going to be worshipping the evicted, the body. After all, it was someone else's
54:09 tomb. She doesn't know. She says. Where is he? I will carry me when I just in my
54:14 mind the picture Mary was willing to try to pick up the body of Jesus and carry it.
54:19 She had that kind of dedication. And then Jesus says to her. He knows your
54:25 name friends. He's calling your name. She heard that voice before the bottles of
54:31 Mary Magdalene out of whom Jesus Cass 7 devils. So that over and over and the violent
54:38 Mary Magdalene out Jesus cast 7 devils. And that doesn't mean at one time like the
54:41 money actually cast out 7 the way it treated in the Bible is 7 different times. She had
54:47 fallen back and he saved her again forgave her again and Seager again. The bottles is a
54:51 righteous man fall 7 times and rises again. And you can read in the book of Joe. He will
54:59 deliver you in 6 troubles. Yes, in 7, evil will not touch you. There she is. Faithfully
55:04 standing outside of the 2. Worshiping. The Lord. Now, if I was in charge of things. I
55:12 would have organized the resurrection differently. If I was Jesus. When I rose from
55:18 the dead, first thing I do is I'd walk off to the high priest and say here I am. Now
55:21 the thing. Why would a stormed in on pilot? It's a surprise. ♪
55:33 But this something very unusual? You think that, you know, he would first revealed
55:39 himself to his mother for Peter. James or John, one of the apostles. But he waits
55:44 until they all home and they go. And he deliberately weights. To reveal himself to
55:52 the least of the lease. That woman they said, don't let her touch you. She's the center.
