00:12 God's Book, the Bible. 00:17 Still relevant in today's complex world. 00:22 It Is Written, sharing hope around the globe. 00:36 Thanks for joining me today on It Is Written. 00:38 I'm John Bradshaw, great to have you with me. 00:41 In the small town where I grew up there was a jeweler's 00:44 shop, it was the place where you could buy a gift or jewelry 00:46 or the place you went to get your clock or your 00:49 watch fixed - and at the jeweler's shop they sold 00:52 watches. 00:53 There was always a display of watches in the store window - 00:55 nice watches. 00:57 Expensive watches - especially when you're a kid 01:00 of 10 or 11 year-old kid. 01:02 Many times I looked through the window of that store and 01:04 dreamed about owning one of those beautiful, grown-up 01:06 watches. 01:08 At about that same time I had a job as a paperboy. 01:11 I'd load my bicycle with papers and ride around town 01:14 for an hour or so 6 days a week delivering between 50 01:18 and 60 newspapers - all for the princely sum of 6 and 7 01:21 dollars a week. 01:23 Just before 6 o'clock in the morning Mr. Pharo would open 01:26 up his newsstand and we'd go to work. 01:28 Early one morning as I rode along Jesmond Street with 01:32 some time to spare before Mr. 01:33 Pharo opened up I rode by that jeweler's store window. 01:38 And you'd never believe it - there was a hole smashed in 01:42 the shop window in the watch display, and someone had 01:45 stolen some of the watches! 01:47 But most of them were still there. 01:50 There was no alarm so nobody was alerted. 01:53 The street was dead quiet, not a soul anywhere to be 01:56 seen - and a boy of 11 or 12 years old stood inches from 02:01 the very watches he had long admired and long wanted 02:05 to have. 02:08 I looked around, and there was nobody. 02:11 And something said, "Take one. 02:15 This is your big chance. 02:17 Nobody will ever know!" 02:19 And you know what I did? 02:20 I actually put my hand through the hole in that 02:23 window to show myself that I really could take one of 02:26 those watches if I wanted to. 02:27 And a wrestling match began - me versus temptation. 02:33 Temptation. 02:37 It's a powerful thing. 02:40 The dictionary I looked at defined temptation as 02:42 "something that tempts, entices or allures." 02:46 And we're all challenged by temptation - on a daily basis. 02:51 And when it overtakes you the results can be devastating. 02:54 For so many people, temptation leads to absolute 02:57 ruin, and defeat, and shame, and loss, and disgrace, 03:00 and pain. 03:01 So what do you do when you're confronted by temptation? 03:06 Irish writer Oscar Wilde famously said, "I can resist 03:10 everything except temptation." 03:12 Screen siren Mae West said, "I generally avoid temptation 03:16 unless I can't resist it." 03:19 And that's cute, I guess, except that 03:21 temptation's no joke. 03:23 Temptation is Satan's way of trying to break us down, to 03:26 get us away from the will of God - because he knows that 03:28 if he can do that, he's got us, and 03:32 we MAY be LOST eternally. 03:35 Temptation comes in all shapes and sizes. 03:38 For some people, it's chocolate or M & Ms 03:40 or hamburgers. 03:41 For others, alcohol or drugs or cigarettes. 03:45 Some are tempted by anger, others by lust, some are 03:48 tempted to steal, tempted by pride, tempted to call in 03:50 sick or tempted to stay out all night or to waste money. 03:54 I imagine you can easily think of what tempts you 03:58 most. 03:59 But I'd like you to keep something in mind today. 04:01 Temptation and sin are two different things. 04:06 You don't want to think that being tempted makes you 04:09 guilty of committing sin. 04:11 When someone cuts you off in traffic and the impulse rises 04:13 to shake your fist and shout something inappropriate, 04:17 that's not sin. 04:18 That's temptation. 04:19 When you see an attractive person and something within 04:22 you suggests you take a lingering second look, that's 04:26 not ásiná either - that's TEMPTATION. 04:30 But you can see how temptation is so dangerous. 04:32 All it takes is yielding, and you're caught in its trap. 04:37 Here's what the Bible says in James 1:14 & 15. 04:44 The Bible says, But each one is tempted when he is drawn 04:47 away by his own desires and enticed. 04:50 Then, when desire has conceived, it gives birth to 04:53 sin; and sin, when it is full-grown, brings 04:57 forth death. 04:59 James 1:14, 15 NKJV Nobody ever sinned 05:02 without first being tempted. 05:04 Which means if the person who sinned had known how to deal 05:08 with temptation - the sin would never had happened. 05:11 You know how it goes - "I know I shouldn't but it won't 05:14 hurt me to stop into that casino just once..." - and 05:18 that one decision can end in disaster. 05:21 "Hmmm, I know I probably shouldn't but why don't I 05:23 message that old boyfriend of mine on Facebook. 05:26 I'll just say hi. 05:27 Nothing more than that." Two years later the house has 05:30 been sold and visitation rights are being worked out. 05:33 Temptation draws us, it plays on our desires, it entices us. 05:38 Temptation stalks us. 05:40 Peter wrote that Satan walks about as a roaring lion 05:44 seeking who he can devour. 05:45 That's how dangerous temptation is. 05:48 It separates us from the will of God - it separates us from 05:51 righteousness and holiness, that is, IF WE LET IT. 05:56 So what do you do when you're tempted? 05:59 How can you overcome temptation? 06:01 Today, let's look at examples of people in the Bible who 06:05 were tempted, at what God says about temptation, and 06:09 see if we can figure out how to experience victory and not 06:12 defeat when temptation comes. 06:14 Oh - and what did I do when I was a young boy tempted to 06:18 steal a beautiful new watch? 06:19 I'll tell you in just a moment. 06:23 In Matthew 4:4 the Word of God says "It is written 'Man 06:27 shall not live by bread alone but by every word that 06:30 proceeds out of the mouth of God'." Every Word is a one 06:34 minute Bible-based daily devotional presented by 06:37 Pastor John Bradshaw and designed especially for busy 06:40 people like you. 06:41 Look for Every Word on selected networks or watch it 06:44 on-line everyday on our website itiswritten.com. 06:49 Receive a daily spiritual boost. 06:51 Watch Every Word. 06:52 You'll be glad you did. 06:57 t Is Written is dedicated to sharing the gospel around the 07:00 world. 07:01 To discover more about It Is Written, I invite you to 07:03 visit our website: itiswritten.com and browse 07:06 the dozens of pages that describe what we do and how 07:08 we do it. 07:10 Let' get to know each other better. 07:13 Visit our website itiswritten.com today. 07:17 Thanks for joining me today on It Is Written. 07:19 Today we're talking about something that's a fact of 07:22 our daily lives, something that brings destruction to 07:24 lives, ruin to homes and chaos to marriages. 07:28 Temptation. 07:30 Well - it isn't the temptation itself that ruins 07:32 lives and homes and marriages, but the way we 07:35 often respond to it. 07:36 So, how should we respond to temptation? 07:40 I mentioned a few minutes ago that when I was a boy I had a 07:42 golden opportunity to steal a beautiful watch. 07:45 That temptation was ástrongá - in the end, I couldn't 07:50 bring myself to take it. 07:52 I knew it was wrong, and besides - how would I explain 07:56 to my father where this beautiful new watch had come 07:58 from, a watch that coincidentally would've 08:00 turned up on my wrist the day the jeweler's store was 08:03 burgled? 08:05 I got rode my bike across the street to Mr. Pharo's store 08:08 and he called the police and that was that. 08:11 Now I wish I could say I always dealt with temptation 08:13 like that. 08:15 But that's not always the case. 08:17 Think of how temptation works in the lives of people and 08:20 how it so often brings people to do completely irrational 08:22 things. 08:24 Temptation leads people to become slaves to the 08:26 substances that tempt them. 08:28 Temptation can be tough stuff. 08:34 But you know that before this program is over, I'm going to 08:36 share with you some key tools that are temptation busters - 08:41 some tools that will help you get over temptation, tools 08:43 that will help you find strength in the moment of 08:46 temptation. 08:48 Temptation doesn't have to ruin your life. 08:51 One thing about temptation is that it's everywhere these 08:54 days. 08:55 Once up on a time there were certain sins you had to go 08:57 out looking for, but now you can pull them up on your 09:01 computer screen without even leaving your house - nobody 09:04 knows. 09:06 And society seems to encourage sin like never 09:09 before. 09:10 Have what you want. 09:11 Have áwhoá you want. 09:12 Bad behavior is often rewarded with celebrity and 09:15 fame. 09:16 Sin is applauded. 09:18 I saw a billboard advertising a nightclub and the billboard 09:21 said, "Just the right amount of wrong." Sin is cool. 09:25 Temptation's everywhere. 09:29 So what do you do? 09:30 Let's look at some case studies. 09:32 Come with me all the way back to the beginning. 09:36 Adam and Eve had been placed into the Garden of Eden by a 09:38 loving God. 09:40 As long as they obeyed God, the enemy couldn't harm them. 09:43 But Satan knew that if they yielded to temptation it 09:47 would corrupt them and cause separation between them and 09:49 God. 09:50 Now Satan couldn't FORCE Adam and Eve to sin, but he could 09:54 TEMPT them. 09:57 He could allure them, he could entice them. 10:01 He could cloak sin in a covering that would make it 10:02 seem too good to refuse. 10:04 So while Eve was in the Garden of Eden, Satan spoke 10:06 to her. 10:07 Using a beautiful snake as a medium - and remember, this 10:10 was way back then, before people were afraid of snakes 10:14 - Satan said this ...we look in Geneses 3, "Has God indeed 10:20 said, You shall not eat of every tree of the Garden?" 10:24 Remember - God told Adam and Eve not to eat the fruit that 10:27 grew on the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. 10:30 And they could only be happy as they stayed in harmony 10:32 with God. 10:33 And now - they're being tempted. 10:37 Eve made a crucial mistake: she lingered, instead of 10:41 fleeing temptation. 10:43 And curious, she engaged the devil in a discussion. 10:50 And she said to the serpent in Genesis 3:2 and 3, We may 10:55 eat the fruit of the trees of the garden; but of the fruit 11:00 of the tree which is in the midst of the garden, God has 11:04 said, 'You shall not eat it, nor shall you touch it, lest 11:07 you die. 11:08 Genesis 3:2, 3 NKJV So Eve knew the score. 11:13 She knew God's will and she knew what was at stake. 11:16 And that's when the devil upped the ante. 11:18 Verses 4 through 6. 11:19 He said to Eve, You will not surely die. 11:21 For God knows that in the day you eat of it your eyes will 11:24 be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and 11:26 evil." So when the woman saw that the tree was good for 11:29 food, that it was pleasant to the eyes, and a tree 11:34 desirable to make one wise, she took of its fruit and 11:37 ate. 11:39 She also gave to her husband with her, and he ate. 11:43 Genesis 3:4-6 NKJV And that was that. 11:48 They ate - and sin came into the world, with all its 11:52 attendant misery. 11:53 And its easy to criticize them for eating the fruit - I 11:56 mean, a talking snake?! 11:59 And it's easy to criticize them for eating the fruit. 12:03 I mean, a talking snake! 12:04 What Eve SHOULD have done seems obvious. 12:06 But it can't be that simple or you and I would do it all 12:07 the time and we'd never fall into sin. 12:09 What should Eve have done? 12:10 First, she should have called to God. 12:12 Second, she should not have lingered in the presence of 12:15 temptation. 12:17 Eve allowed herself to be "beguiled" as Paul writes 12:21 later in the Bible - enchanted, or tricked. 12:24 Now some lessons for us. 12:26 When temptation comes, call on God, right away. 12:29 Pray! 12:31 And, don't linger don't hang around it. 12:34 When the enemy comes calling, close the avenue of 12:37 communication. 12:38 If it's something on a computer or a TV, pray and 12:40 turn it off. 12:42 If it's a person driving you nuts, pray and if possible, 12:45 get out of there. 12:47 Eve hung around the temptation when she should 12:49 have fled the temptation. 12:52 And we're still paying the price for her indiscretion 12:54 today. 12:56 I think we both know temptation is a powerful 12:59 thing. 13:01 An image on a billboard, a drink in a glass, an 13:04 attractive face or the chance to get easy money - powerful 13:08 temptations, for all kinds of reasons. 13:12 In a moment, we'll look at two people and how they 13:16 reacted - very differently - to temptation when it came. 13:20 And I am going to give you three tools for beating 13:23 temptation? 13:24 We'll have them next. 13:26 ♪♪♪♪♪♪♪ There's a man in the office 13:47 where I work who says he is a Christian and when he meets a 13:51 new person he always asks them if they are saved. 13:55 It kind of irritates me. 13:58 Most of the people respond by saying they don't know. 14:01 So how does somebody know if they are saved or not? 14:04 Great question. 14:07 Let's get our definitions straight first. 14:10 When someone says they are 'saved', what they're saying 14:12 is they are in a saving relationship with Jesus. 14:16 They have put their faith and trust in Him, their sins are 14:18 forgiven, they're living daily connected to Him - 14:20 they're 'saved'. 14:23 That is, if Jesus were to return right then, they would 14:26 be certain that they'd go to heaven because they have 14:30 chosen Jesus as their Lord and Saviour. 14:31 The Bible says this. 14:33 "God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten 14:36 Son, that whosoever believeth in Him should not perish, but 14:40 have everlasting life." 14:42 That's John 3:16. 14:44 If you believe in Jesus - and that means more than just to 14:47 give a mental assent, it means to have given your life 14:49 completely to Him - if you believe in Jesus then you can 14:53 know that God has given you the gift of eternal life. 14:56 In 1 John 5:12 John writes, "He that hath the Son hath 15:00 life, and He that hath not the Son of God hath not life" 15:05 If you have Jesus in your life, if you are given to 15:09 Him, you have life - everlasting life. 15:12 Then in verse 13 John writes, "These things have I written 15:16 unto you that believe on the name of the Son of God; that 15:20 ye may know that ye have eternal life, and that ye may 15:24 believe on the name of the Son of God." Now did you 15:27 catch that? 15:28 "That you may know you have eternal life." A person 15:32 doesn't need to be in doubt. 15:34 If you've accepted Jesus and given your life completely to 15:37 Him completely, you can believe that God has accepted 15:40 you and that eternal life is yours. 15:43 God wants you to have that assurance. 15:46 Now, He doesn't want you to be presumptuous - you don't 15:48 want to go around believing you're going home to heaven 15:50 one day if you're not living a life connected to God. 15:54 But if you have chosen Jesus, if you have repented, if you 15:58 are prepared to believe God's promises to you - then you 16:02 can know that eternal life is really yours. 16:05 If you have a question you'd like answered, go to our 16:08 website - www.itiswritten.com and click on the QUESTIONS tab. 16:12 Submit your question, and in a future program we might be 16:14 able to answer your question too. 16:18 If you have a Bible question for pastor John Bradshaw, 16:21 please write to It Is Written, Box O, Thousand 16:25 Oaks, California 91359 or visit our website 16:28 itiswritten.com and send us your questions on-line. 16:33 I'm John Bradshaw. 16:34 Thanks for joining me today on It Is Written. 16:36 In a few minutes I'm going to offer you a free resource to 16:39 help you deal with temptation. 16:41 I hope you'll get that information so I can send 16:43 this free resource to you. 16:45 Right now, let's look at two people who were faced with 16:48 the same temptation, and who handled it very differently. 16:52 One, successfully, and the other, disastrously. 16:58 In 2 Samuel 11 you read these words: Then it happened one 17:09 evening that David arose from his bed and walked on the 17:11 roof of the king's house. 17:13 And from the roof he saw a woman bathing, and the woman 17:16 was very beautiful to behold. 17:19 2 Samuel 11:2 NKJV Now let me ask you - has David done 17:23 anything wrong here? 17:25 Anything sinful? 17:26 Anything immoral? 17:27 The answer is, No he hasn't. 17:28 He's out walking one evening - no sin there - and he sees 17:30 a beautiful woman. 17:31 Maybe he couldn't help that. 17:33 But something takes place here. 17:35 He's tempted. 17:36 He has seen something he likes - frankly, it's 17:39 something he was created to appreciate - in the right 17:42 context, of course. 17:44 And when something within David said to him, "This is 17:47 good!" David didn't react in the way he should have. 17:52 He was tempted. 17:53 But then he started to imagine what it would be 17:56 like to... 17:58 get to know this woman better. 18:00 As James wrote, "he was drawn away of his own lusts, and 18:04 enticed." The Bible says that David sent and inquired about 18:11 the woman. 18:13 Now, let me ask you: anything wrong with that? 18:17 Was inquiring about the woman contravening any societal 18:19 conventions? 18:20 Strictly speaking, No! 18:22 Nothing wrong with asking who a person was. 18:24 You do it. 18:27 But what was David really doing? 18:29 He was opening the door to temptation, wasn't he? 18:32 Now he was on dangerous ground. 18:35 We read this in 2 Samuel 11, And someone said, Is this not 18:39 Bathsheba, the daughter of Eliam, the wife of Uriah 18:42 the Hittite? 18:44 2 Samuel 11:3 NKJV No, David, don't do it. 18:47 You're already married, she's married, this just isn't 18:51 necessary. 18:52 Put the idea out of your mind. 18:54 Pray, go back to your room, read a good book... 18:59 This isn't going to lead to anything good. 19:02 Verse 4 says, Then David sent messengers, and took her; and 19:06 she came to him. 19:08 2 Samuel 11:4 NKJV ... 19:09 and... 19:11 so on. 19:12 By the time this thing was over, David had committed a 19:14 litany of terrible sins - adultery, dishonesty, 19:17 murder... 19:19 Judgment came swiftly. 19:21 What a mess. 19:22 But if he had handled that temptation better, it would 19:25 have all been different. 19:27 What should David have done? 19:29 To find that out, look at someone who found himself in 19:32 a similar situation. 19:34 Joseph had been unjustly sold as a slave to Egypt. 19:38 He might have been tempted to think that God had forsaken 19:40 him. 19:42 The man who purchased him made Joseph the ruler over 19:45 his entire household. 19:46 The man's wife decides that this handsome young man (as 19:49 the Bible describes him) is her cup of tea, and she acts 19:53 on her desires. 19:56 Genesis 39:7, the Bible says this, His master's wife cast 20:03 her eyes upon Joseph; and she said, Lie with me. 20:08 Genesis 39:7 KJV Temptation? 20:12 (Nodding...) I'm not trying to say Joseph welcomed it, 20:16 but it was certainly a temptation for him. 20:19 So what did he do? 20:21 But he refused and said to his master's wife, "Look, my 20:25 master does not know what is with me in the house, and he 20:28 has committed all that he has to my hand. 20:32 9 There is no one greater in this house than I, nor has he 20:35 kept back anything from me but you, because you are his 20:39 wife. 20:41 Genesis 38:8-9 NKJV Joseph was moved by a sense of 20:43 right, and a sense of duty and loyalty. 20:47 He was governed by principle rather than desire. 20:50 He said to the temptress, "How then can I do this great 20:53 wickedness, and sin against God?" Genesis 39:9 Moved by 20:59 honor for God, Joseph wouldn't cave in to the 21:02 temptation. 21:04 So the woman started coming on to Joseph every day. 21:07 And he ástillá didn't cave. 21:09 Joseph made God's desires more important than his own. 21:13 In the short term he paid a terrible price. 21:15 But God says, "Them that honor me I will honor." And 21:19 Joseph became second only to Pharaoh in the greatest 21:22 kingdom in the world. 21:25 Temptation didn't have to bring down David, but it did. 21:28 When the door of temptation right there before him, he 21:33 walked clear through. 21:35 Joseph, on the other hand, slammed the door shut. 21:38 Joseph decided ahead of time that by God's grace he would 21:41 honor God in what He did. 21:43 And God honored him for that. 21:45 Alright now - let me give you three Cs for dealing with 21:50 temptation. 21:51 And I'm telling you, his can revolutionize your life. 21:55 1 - Call on God. 21:59 That means pray. 22:00 Eve evidently didn't do that. 22:02 Neither did David. 22:03 In the midst of their temptation, if they had 22:05 called on God and asked for guidance and strength, things 22:08 would have turned out a lot different. 22:10 It's mighty hard to pray and sin at the same time. 22:12 And C, No. 22:14 2 2 - Trust Completely. 22:18 James said this in James 4:7. 22:20 Therefore submit to God. 22:27 Resist the devil and he will flee from you (NKJV). 22:32 See, what that means is that God has said you can be 22:34 victorious. 22:35 You don't have to fall. 22:37 This idea, this "I guess I'm just too weak...You might be, 22:42 but God is strong. 22:45 He can keep you. 22:46 If you resist the devil while submitting to God, the devil 22:50 will flee. 22:52 God said so. 22:53 How do I know that? 22:54 Because God has said so. 22:57 And C, No. 22:58 3 3 - Claim God's Promises. 23:01 Here's a powerful verse. 23:04 1 Corinthians 10:13, here's what the Bible says, No 23:10 temptation has overtaken you except such as is common to 23:13 man; but God is faithful, who will not allow you to be 23:18 tempted beyond what you are able, but with the temptation 23:21 will also make the way of escape, that you may be able 23:24 to bear it. 23:29 Gather up the promises of God, so that when you're 23:31 tempted by impurity you can say, Blessed are the pure in 23:34 heart, for they shall see God. 23:37 Matthew 5:8 NKJV. 23:39 Or, you might say, I will set nothing wicked before my 23:42 eyes. 23:43 Psalm 101:3 NKJV. 23:44 Or you could claim 2 Peter 2:9 whatever the temptation 23:47 is you find yourself beset by, 2 Peter 2:9, The Lord 23:54 knows how to deliver the godly out of temptations. 23:59 That's what the Bible says in 2 Peter 2:9 NKJV You don't 24:03 have to fall when temptation comes. 24:06 No, I'm not suggesting this is easy. 24:08 It is simple - but not always easy. 24:10 Temptation can be a struggle, but if you'll take it to God 24:14 every time, you can know that God will deliver you. 24:19 Remember that line in the Lord's Prayer? 24:21 "Lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil." 24:23 It's real. 24:25 God will deliver you. 24:27 Remember those Three C's, C #1, Call on God, C#2, Trust 24:32 Completely in God, and C#3, Claim God's promises. 24:40 God will give you victory. 24:42 This can revolutionize your life. 24:45 You know, a big key to being victorious in the face of 24:47 temptation is relying on the word of God, especially the 24:50 promises of God. 24:52 I want to offer you something that will help you in your 24:54 battle with temptation. 24:55 It's a little book called, "God's Promises."
