Most people, when they hear 00:42 the name Rockefeller, think of a very rich American 00:46 family, or maybe the Rockefeller Center in New 00:49 York City, which is home to such famous places 00:52 as Radio City Music Hall and Christie's, the world's 00:54 largest auction house. Yet for many years the name 00:57 Rockefeller was hated and despised, it was a symbol 01:02 of corporate greed where the more powerful sweep away 01:04 the weaker and acquire more and more and more 01:08 for themselves--no matter who got crushed along the way. 01:13 No wonder. The founder of the dynasty, 01:15 John D. Rockefeller, started in the oil business 01:18 in Cleveland during the 1800s, and--through a series 01:21 of backroom deals he created the monster monopoly 01:24 of Standard Oil. Because it was so large, 01:28 Standard Oil could cut prices, forcing all 01:33 competitors either to sell to it or go bankrupt, in which 01:35 case Rockefeller would simply buy up the ruined company 01:37 at discount rates. Rockefeller would come to his 01:41 competitors, show them his own books, show them 01:45 the financial behemoth that they were up against--and then 01:48 make them an offer. If they refused, he simply 01:51 put them out of business and then get their company 01:53 anyway. He was ruthless. 01:56 He once told his brother Frank, who had been working 01:59 for a competing oil company: We are going to buy out all 02:02 the refiners in Cleveland. Rockefeller was a church-going man. 02:28 Even worse, he rationalized his business dealings in, 02:31 of all things--the name of Christian charity! 02:35 He had convinced himself that he was actually doing good. 02:39 He said that all these forced acquisitions were the result 02:43 of the most prosperous business concern, his own, saying 02:47 to the smaller and less prosperous ones: 02:49 We will stand in for the risks and hazards of the refining 02:52 business . It s a real mistake 11:08 to allegorize Satan, to make him out to a figment of human 11:11 imagination, just a symbol of our darker side or the like. 11:16 My Bible talks again and again about a literal being 11:20 who is at war with us and with God. 11:22 Look at the following texts and keep in mind two points 11:26 that are found in them: first, the reality of the 11:29 devil; and second, the fact that he is working against 11:32 us. Firstly, 1 Peter 5:8, 11:36 the Bible says: Be sober, be vigilant; because 11:42 your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, 11:44 walketh about, seeking whom he may devour 11:50 Ephesians 6:11, KJV Put on the whole armour of God, 11:56 that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil 11:57 And 2 Corinthians 2:11, KJV, Lest Satan should get 12:02 an advantage of us: for we are not ignorant of his devices 12:05 And before I go further, there s one more text I want 12:09 to look at because it's one of the most important ones 12:13 in all the Bible, one of the most important 12:16 texts that can help us understand the nature 12:20 and the outcome of this great controversy. 12:22 Talking about Jesus, the Bible says in Hebrews 2:14 12:24 that: Forasmuch then as the children are partakers 12:33 of flesh and blood, he also himself likewise 12:34 took part of the same; that through death he might 12:36 destroy him that had the power of death, that is, the devil 12:42 (Hebrews 2:14, KJV). Notice that He will destroy 12:46 the one who had the power of death, that is the devil. 12:49 Satan's ultimate fate is to be destroyed. 12:52 We might be in a war, in a battle, in a controversy, 12:56 but we know beforehand that the good side wins, 12:57 that God wins and, in a nutshell, what God 13:01 is saying to us in the Bible is this: Come on over 13:06 to the winning side. Jesus has won the battle 13:09 for you, and He offers you the fruits, the promise, 13:11 the guarantee of His victory against Satan. 13:14 Talk about an offer! I'd like to say, It's an offer 13:17 you can't refuse, but in God's universe, 13:21 we all have free choice, and so we can refuse. 13:26 The question is, Why would we? 13:29 When God offers us everything and the devil offers us only 13:33 death and destruction, why would we chose anything else? 13:36 If we do, it's because we are allowing Satan to deceive us. 13:41 Remember, the Bible says that he deceives the whole world. 13:46 But we don't have to be fooled. We just don t have to be, 13:50 as Paul wrote, ignorant of his devices, and one of the ways 13:53 we can know his devices is through studying 13:56 the temptation in the wilderness, 13:59 and how Satan tried to use his devices on Jesus 14:02 and failed. First, Satan tried to tempt 14:06 Jesus in the area of appetite, telling Jesus 14:10 to use His power to turn stones into bread. 14:12 How did Jesus respond? He used the power of God's 14:16 Word, saying to Satan: It is written, Man shall not 14:18 live by bread alone, but by every word 14:23 that proceedeth out of the mouth of God. 14:27 (Matthew 4:4, KJV). Jesus didn't argue with Satan, 14:30 he didn't get into a theological debate, and he didn't try 14:33 to reason with him. He simply went to the Bible 14:37 and he quoted the Bible. And that was enough to shut 14:40 the devil down. There s an important lesson 14:43 there, when we struggle with temptations. 14:46 We can go to God s Word and claim His promises 14:48 for victory, just as Jesus did. So, what happened next 14:53 in the wilderness? That first ploy didn't work, 14:56 so Satan tried something else. Here s Matthew s account 15:00 of the second temptation of Jesus: Then the devil taketh 15:05 him up into the holy city, and setteth him on a pinnacle 15:08 of the temple, And saith unto him, If thou be the Son 15:12 of God, cast thyself down: for it is written, He shall give 15:16 his angels charge concerning thee: and in their hands they 15:21 shall bear thee up, lest at any time thou dash thy foot 15:24 against a stone. Jesus said unto him, 15:27 It is written again, Thou shalt not tempt the Lord 15:31 thy God That's Matthew 4:5-7 Look at what s going on here. 15:38 Jesus used Scripture against the devil, and so what does 15:42 the devil do? He comes back to Jesus 15:43 and tempts him, this time quoting Scripture himself! 15:48 Jesus used the Bible as His means of countering 15:51 the devil's first attack in the wilderness, 15:53 and so the devil tried to meet Jesus on His own ground, 15:55 quoting Scripture back at Him. And yet here's an important 16:00 point. Though the devil quotes 16:02 Scripture, he really misquotes it, taking it out of context 16:06 and trying to get it to say something different 16:08 from what it meant. This has been his ploy 16:11 for millennia now, and often used for horrendous 16:14 purposes too. The devil has plenty of folks 16:18 willing to misquote and misuse the Bible 16:21 for their own ends. The difference between 16:24 presumption and faith.
