00:01 (inspiring music)
00:22 - Hello, and welcome to "Jesus for Asia Now."
00:24 I'm Natalie Wood and my husband Jon is here with me,
00:27 as we go through the second part of our Mission Trek Show.
00:31 Hello love?
00:32 - Hi darling, how are you?
00:33 - I'm doing great.
00:34 I'm looking forward
00:35 to the second half- - Yes.
00:36 - Of our Mission Trek Show.
00:38 - Yeah, it felt weird to end the last show
00:39 because it's like right in the middle
00:41 of this mission trek tour- - Right.
00:43 - And we had to stop. - Right, but we got too long.
00:46 - Yes, so that's why we're doing a second one.
00:48 - Okay, I hope so.
00:49 - And we're gonna start out
00:51 pretty much where we left off in the trip
00:53 - Okay. - And, but we moved countries
00:55 during this little break here between episodes.
00:58 - Okay. - And we have moved
00:59 from Thailand
01:01 into Cambodia now. - Okay, yeah,
01:02 and so the trip included
01:05 basically Thailand and Cambodia
01:07 because it's- - Right.
01:08 - Cheap to travel through there,
01:10 it's very easy to travel through there
01:12 and we have a lot of missionaries
01:13 and friends that we can talk to and meet
01:15 and see what they're doing.
01:17 And, it's one of the least-reached areas of the world.
01:19 So. - Right, right.
01:21 So our first clip is from Wat Preah Yesu
01:23 which is Tim Maddocks, Tim and Wendy Maddocks' place.
01:26 - [Jon] Awesome.
01:37 (laughing)
01:39 - We're here in Cambodia at Wat Preah Yesu
01:42 with the Maddocks and we are interested
01:45 in how this place got started.
01:47 So what did it take to start a ministry,
01:49 a project from scratch?
01:51 - I think the biggest thing was faith
01:54 because it's like we're leaving a paid job,
01:58 we're leaving the security of the town,
02:00 and we're trusting God to provide all of our needs.
02:03 One thing God said to me very clearly
02:05 was that we weren't to ask anybody for funds
02:08 to do what he was asking us to do,
02:10 just ask him and he'll deal with it.
02:12 And so that's a whole new way of life.
02:15 - Yeah, it is a whole new way of life.
02:17 - Yes, and that's a very inspiring time to see, you know,
02:21 because you hear about people that are launching,
02:23 but then to see people that have been in the field
02:26 for over 20 years.
02:27 - Right, right.
02:29 - You know. - Right,
02:30 there's a lot more
02:31 to their story- - Oh yeah.
02:32 - And we do have more in the show.
02:33 That particular clip came from episode eight.
02:36 - Yes, exactly. - So we have another clip here
02:39 because at that place, Tim and Wendy have a school,
02:43 an orphanage, a media studio,
02:46 now we're gonna hear a story of an orphan.
02:49 - Do you have any stories like of the kids
02:53 that you could tell?
02:54 - Yeah, I can tell you the story of cha-ma-i here.
02:56 One day I got a call to the village just down the road
03:00 and the village leader had a child for me.
03:06 And the child was a two-year-old and weighed five kilograms.
03:10 And the mother and father were both living,
03:12 but the child was living with her grandmother
03:14 who had dementia and her parents were alcoholics.
03:17 And so I took this child and we gave her a name, Naomi,
03:21 but she was so weak and thin
03:23 she looked like she'd come out of a famine in Africa.
03:26 I took her to the children's hospital
03:28 and when the nurses saw her at the children's hospital,
03:32 they said, "Hey, she's got a twin sister here."
03:35 And I said, and they said, "Do you want to see?"
03:39 And I said, "Yeah, sure, take me to her."
03:41 And so they took me to another ward
03:43 and cha-ma-i was there, two years old, five kilograms,
03:47 big belly, skinny little legs, skinny little arms
03:50 looked just like, they're just like twins (chuckling).
03:53 And they said cha-ma-i's mother
03:55 had abandoned her at the hospital
03:57 and they'd tried to contact her,
03:58 but hadn't been able to contact her.
04:00 And they said, "Would you take her?"
04:02 And I said, "Sure."
04:04 So two weeks later I took back, took the two girls home
04:08 and they're both healthy and happy, beautiful kids.
04:15 - Precious.
04:16 - Very precious. - Those little ones.
04:17 - Yeah, so Tim at that time was,
04:21 was building a butterfly paradise.
04:24 - Right?
04:25 - And this is a tourist attraction
04:26 because a lot of tourists come through through there
04:28 because Ankor Wat is located 10 minutes from his place.
04:33 - [Natalie] Right.
04:34 - So when we did the tour, there,
04:36 all the structures were in place, but none of the flowers,
04:38 none of the plants.
04:39 - Right.
04:41 - And so this is a clip from that, just a short little clip.
04:44 - [Tim] Based on a waterfall that I saw in Laos,
04:47 and fish, big koi fish swimming around.
04:51 and of course butterflies all around you.
04:54 - When, we came back to America,
04:56 we built a set and did a studio segment of the show.
05:00 - Right. - And he came also to America,
05:03 while we were doing those segments,
05:05 and so we filmed a little segment with him
05:06 and he got to show what it was like
05:08 after we- - By then.
05:09 - Yeah. - Right.
05:10 - Exactly. - Right, and this
05:11 is a clip from that.
05:12 - Big difference. - Yeah.
05:14 - So you might remember we came through the entrance,
05:17 well, now you can see the plants,
05:19 there's glass where the crocodile pond is gonna be,
05:21 the waterfalls are still not working, but they will be soon.
05:25 You can see butterflies.
05:27 There's no wire on the sides yet,
05:29 but that allows the butterflies
05:31 to just fly in and fly out
05:33 and, you know, lots of butterflies come every day,
05:38 it's Butterfly Paradise so of course
05:39 they wanna come to paradise.
05:40 (laughing)
05:42 So you can see there's lots of color in the plants,
05:44 purples, oranges, yellows,
05:47 and the plants are growing really, really well.
05:51 - [Girl] It's so much different
05:52 than when we were there, last time.
05:54 - [Girl] There's so much more color.
05:56 - [Girl] Yeah.
05:58 - So you can see so much more beauty,
05:59 all those plants and everything like that.
06:01 - Right. - And it's grown more
06:02 since then.
06:04 - Right, we got to go there another year after that,
06:06 and it was so beautiful. - Yes.
06:08 - The plants were above our heads,
06:10 a lot of them but, you know,
06:12 the ones that are supposed
06:13 to grow that big- - right.
06:14 - Were huge and there were flowers
06:16 and there were butterflies and it was just amazing.
06:18 - Right, yeah, absolutely. - Yeah, it's amazing
06:20 what God has done there.
06:22 and that's a big story and he shared it in the show,
06:25 so people will have to go and watch.
06:27 - Yes (chuckling).
06:28 - So that's episode nine of the show.
06:30 - Yes.
06:31 - So then after we left Tims,
06:33 we went with Miranda Lundby who was in,
06:36 a student missionary with AFM at the time in Cambodia,
06:40 and we went in and saw where she had been living
06:43 and met some other missionaries
06:45 that she was working with.
06:46 - Yes. - So this is
06:47 one of those clips. - Okay.
06:50 (rooster crowing)
06:52 - We're here at a Cambodian village
06:53 with Miranda Lundby and we're gonna ask her
06:55 some questions about what she does here.
07:01 - How did you get involved in missions?
07:04 - The first time I actually did anything
07:07 involved in missions was going to Honduras
07:10 and doing a Share Him Series with my sister.
07:13 I was 15 and we spoke to about a hundred people each night
07:18 so that was the first thing that got us into missions.
07:22 And then just ever since then
07:25 I've pretty much been obsessed.
07:26 (laughing)
07:28 I've had lots of friends and family
07:31 who've also been interested in missions
07:33 so I've been inspired throughout my childhood and teens
07:37 to be involved in missions.
07:39 - So why did you come here to Cambodia?
07:42 - I chose to come here because I've been here before.
07:46 So when I was young I had a friend
07:50 who had come to Cambodia and had stories all about it
07:54 and it immediately went to the top of my list
07:56 of places I wanted to go.
07:58 So, I got invited when I was 18
08:03 to come with another gentlemen and his family,
08:07 and my brother.
08:08 So we all came and taught for a month and a half
08:11 and then when I left,
08:14 I knew it's where I wanted to come back and work
08:16 and I felt like God had really led
08:19 and shown me just how much I could give in this area.
08:25 - That was kinda neat for them to see
08:27 a young person like them.
08:28 She, at this point, I think was about 20 years old.
08:31 - Right. - And so for our teenagers
08:33 to see someone that's just barely out of their teenage,
08:36 her teenage years to be dedicated like this.
08:39 - Right. - Very inspiring.
08:40 - Right, and while we were there
08:42 we talked with another student missionary, Sarah.
08:45 - Now this was a unique situation
08:47 because she was teaching English
08:48 to a class of young people,
08:50 but the place that she was teaching
08:53 was in a shop right next to a busy road
08:56 and the shop had a completely open-side wall,
08:59 there was no wall between them and the road.
09:01 - Right. - And so they'd be
09:03 in there teaching and cars would be whizzing
09:04 by on the road- - And trucks,
09:06 cars and trucks, it was loud.
09:08 - But it was, but it was very inspiring.
09:10 - [Natalie] Right.
09:11 - What do you do here?
09:13 - I teach English here.
09:14 I tutor one student and I teach him business vocabulary.
09:17 (vehicle motor rumbling)
09:19 And then I teach about 30, around 30 students,
09:23 younger, younger kids, I teach them basic English.
09:26 - How many classes do you teach?
09:28 - Three classes in total every day.
09:32 - Should young people get involved in missions?
09:34 - Definitely (chuckling).
09:37 Especially student, student missionaries.
09:40 It's like maybe the longest year of your life,
09:44 but I think it's probably gonna be
09:45 the best year of your life too
09:47 'cause you get to experience so many different things
09:50 and it totally opens up your eyes to a different reality
09:54 and hopefully it will change you for life.
09:57 Like when I go back to the U.S.
09:59 I hope to not go back to the way I was,
10:02 but continue to be developing into a new,
10:05 more mature person because of this.
10:07 - Well, thank you for sharing with us.
10:09 - Yeah, thank you for coming.
10:10 - And we enjoyed interacting with your class
10:11 a little bit. - Yeah.
10:14 - So then after we met with Miranda and Sarah,
10:16 we went to the capital city,
10:17 Phnom Penh- - Right.
10:19 - And then flew back to Bangkok
10:21 to meet with some missionaries
10:22 that we weren't able to meet when we were in Bangkok before.
10:25 - Right, so the first place we're going
10:27 is to the F5 Challenge Center,
10:30 which is a place that it's an amazing miracle story,
10:33 how God provided- - Yes.
10:34 - Step-by-step, the whole,
10:36 the whole plan. - Yes.
10:38 - But here's a little clip now.
10:40 - Oh yeah, now the F5 Challenge Center
10:43 is a five-story building
10:44 that is located within about 400 feet
10:47 of one of the world's largest universities,
10:49 over 500,000 students go to that university
10:53 and they've got a climbing wall
10:54 and a bunch of different things.
10:55 - Right. - So this was
10:57 in the early stages of construction
10:59 so it doesn't look very good.
11:00 - Okay. (laughing)
11:02 (light guitar music)
11:13 - So this floor, there'll be a wall coming out here,
11:16 it goes here all the way across.
11:18 There'll be a half wall and the rest
11:20 will be glass going up and around,
11:22 and there'll be a sliding glass door
11:23 there to go into the restaurant.
11:29 - Okay, so the next clip that we have
11:32 is of it more finished.
11:33 - Yes, and that's what's so exciting
11:35 is that these young people go and they see it
11:37 as it's being built, they see it in its early stages.
11:41 Yeah, somebody taking a risk for Christ
11:43 and hoping that it will turn into souls for the kingdom.
11:47 - Right. - And then later
11:48 they hear about the growth of these projects,
11:52 these dreams, and they see the effects,
11:54 and they're like, they get this connection.
11:56 - Right. - You know, it's not,
11:57 it's no longer just mission stories
11:58 it's like- - Some place out there.
11:59 - Yeah, my friends.
12:01 - Yeah, I've been there, I've walked there.
12:03 - Exactly.
12:04 - I've climbed there
12:05 in this case- - Yes.
12:06 - Because they have a climbing wall.
12:07 - Yes. - On the fifth floor,
12:09 and the roof- - Yeah.
12:11 - And it's really awesome to see what God has done there.
12:14 - Absolutely. - So let's play the clip now
12:16 of it more finished.
12:17 - [Jon] Okay.
12:22 - [Girl] God has been doing amazing things
12:23 since we visited the Atwells,
12:25 and we want to share with you
12:26 some more recent stories
12:27 about how God has worked and provided
12:29 for their center of influence.
12:31 (light guitar music)
12:40 - That's awesome. - Yeah.
12:41 - What an amazing outreach ministry that is.
12:44 - Yeah, that, it's such a testimony
12:46 to what God can do- - Yes, the truth is.
12:47 - When there is that kind of need.
12:49 - Yes. - I mean, in other places
12:51 in the jungle and things,
12:52 we see a huge need for the Holy Spirit,
12:55 we see, which is also in the city,
12:57 but it's just like those,
12:59 these two projects to me are like a,
13:01 like a monument to what God can do.
13:03 It's like Gale's clinic too
13:05 up in the- - Yes.
13:06 - Up in the jungle and some of the missionaries houses
13:07 and how God has led them to where they are
13:10 and what they're doing- - Yes.
13:11 - In their project.
13:12 Such a testimony, such a memorial,
13:14 it's like a statue- - Yeah.
13:15 - You know, to what God can do.
13:17 It's an alter- - Yeah.
13:18 - Kind of thing- - There you go.
13:19 - To what God can do. - Right.
13:20 - Because he is so amazing
13:23 and his plan for each place, for each project
13:25 is different, for each missionary,
13:28 their duty, and their call is different,
13:31 but yet he can cause
13:33 it to excel- - Yes.
13:34 - In such amazing ways. - Yes.
13:36 - And- - Yes, and it's so,
13:38 it's, you know. - It's inspiring.
13:39 - It is very inspiring,
13:40 and to see them go there
13:41 and try to find the Lord's will,
13:43 and then as the Lord led them step-by-step
13:46 and then he- - Right.
13:47 - Asked them to bite off way more than they could chew
13:49 and so- - And they went for it.
13:51 - Both of those projects that you mentioned,
13:53 Butterfly Paradise and F5 Challenge Center,
13:57 when they told me what they're planning,
13:58 I'm like, there's no way. - There's no way.
14:01 - There's no way, and now we see
14:04 God found a way- - Yeah.
14:05 - And they're there. - God found a way.
14:07 - And so now it's easy to just forget about it,
14:08 but no, it's like, we, like you say,
14:10 we have to look at those as this is a testament
14:13 of what God can do.
14:15 - [Natalie] Right. And it should build our faith.
14:16 - Right, right.
14:18 Okay, the next part is another prayer experience
14:21 that we arranged with, with Jim,
14:24 because his ministry is mostly
14:25 prayer ministry- - Yes.
14:27 - Leading prayer in different places.
14:29 And so- - Yeah.
14:30 - Since he was there in Bangkok, at the same time we were,
14:32 we arranged for him to have a prayer walk
14:34 through Bangkok- - Yes.
14:36 - With the, with the young people.
14:37 - And this first clip is in
14:39 one of the largest malls in Thailand.
14:43 I think over 10,000 people use the bathrooms
14:49 every day- - Wow.
14:50 - Every day.
14:51 - So a lot more people go to the mall
14:52 then use the bathrooms, so. - Yes,
14:54 and so there's a lot of people there
14:56 and I love how Jim saw
14:58 through all the glitter and everything
15:02 and saw the heart of what the people are looking for.
15:05 - Right.
15:07 - So when you look around the mall right now,
15:09 what do you see?
15:10 - Busy, people.
15:11 - People who are empty,
15:13 people who are trying to fill in that void
15:15 and they don't know that only God could fill that in.
15:20 Isn't it a huge, huge, huge burden, and huge opportunity,
15:25 when you look at those people,
15:27 these are the people who don't know what they want,
15:29 who don't know what they need.
15:32 They don't know that only God, only God could fill it.
15:37 So when you look at these people right now,
15:40 does a burden grow in your heart?
15:43 Does a concern grow in your heart?
15:46 They will not find what they're looking for
15:47 because what they're looking for is not God
15:50 and I guess this gives me the burden
15:51 to pray for these people.
15:53 - Yeah.
15:54 - Not just for MBK,
15:56 but for the whole Thailand.
16:00 Do you wanna spend time praying for these people?
16:02 - Yeah.
16:03 - [Jim] Okay.
16:07 - Dear heavenly Father,
16:08 we come before you today at MBK,
16:12 where it's the most visited shopping mall in Thailand,
16:15 in Bangkok, and we ask that you
16:19 would send your Holy Spirit here
16:22 to show these people that what they're looking for,
16:25 or what they need, they can't
16:27 find it here- - Yes Lord.
16:28 - And they can't find it in material things.
16:30 Send someone to show them that they need you
16:34 to fill the hole that they're trying to fill.
16:37 - What a beautiful concept.
16:38 - Yep.
16:39 Yeah. - Yeah.
16:41 - And just again a neat opportunity
16:43 for the young people to see these things
16:45 and to think about that from the spiritual perspective.
16:48 - Right. - Like that,
16:49 is really, really powerful.
16:51 And to think that, you know, it doesn't matter where we are,
16:54 we don't have to pray out loud for the people around us,
16:56 but we should still be praying for them
16:58 because no matter where we are
17:00 there are people that are suffering in some way.
17:02 Whether it's, you know, a physical illness,
17:05 or an emotional illness, or, you know,
17:08 a mental illness,
17:10 or spiritual illness- - Absolutely.
17:11 - There's all sorts of people suffering in various ways
17:14 and we should be praying
17:15 for those around us. - Right,
17:16 and absolutely because in a lot of these places
17:19 that has not known the gospel,
17:21 the demons have had free play.
17:24 - Right.
17:25 - And so there's demons there
17:26 that have been oppressing the people
17:28 and so bringing in Christ, bringing in prayer,
17:30 bringing in the good angels,
17:33 actually releases that suffering to a degree
17:37 and allows God to work in those places.
17:39 And lot of, a lot of mission work is spiritual work.
17:42 It's not just the physical, it's not just the service thing,
17:47 that's a part, but that's, like Gale was saying,
17:50 that's an avenue to the heart.
17:51 - Right, right. - To bring Christ in.
17:53 Then we went to the tallest building
17:57 in Bangkok- - Right.
17:58 - And we prayed for the city.
18:00 And on the top of that building,
18:02 there's a circular sidewalk,
18:05 So to speak- - Right.
18:06 - That actually- - Rotating.
18:07 - Rotates. - Rotating sidewalk.
18:09 - Yeah, and it goes all the way around every 11 minutes,
18:11 it makes 360 degrees.
18:13 And so we went up there and for the end of that day,
18:17 we prayed for the city.
18:19 - Yeah.
18:21 - If the Holy spirit empowers these people
18:25 this city could be lighted up,
18:27 could be lighted up with God's glory.
18:30 So let us pray.
18:31 - Thank you that we could here and be able to see some,
18:36 a little bit of the scale of what is here,
18:40 and what needs to be done.
18:41 - We pray that your Holy Spirit
18:43 would be poured out on this city.
18:48 - That's such a powerful prayer.
18:50 - Yeah, and to be up there and see the city
18:54 and think about how many people,
18:56 each of those buildings that you can see represents,
18:59 it's very intense.
19:00 - Yeah, 13 million people.
19:02 - Yeah.
19:03 - In that one city.
19:04 - Yeah, so that was a neat opportunity
19:06 for the young people also
19:07 to think about it that way as well.
19:10 - Absolutely.
19:11 - So, well after that we came home
19:15 and we ended up building the set in our garage
19:19 and so we have a few behind-the-scenes pictures.
19:21 - Yes, it was neat to see how they took, you know,
19:25 came up with a vision, an idea,
19:28 and then had to like choose an idea.
19:31 - Right. - And then,
19:32 and then go forward and make it happen.
19:34 - Right. - You know,
19:35 and that's a huge thing for young people
19:38 to go from, you know, they're going to school every day
19:41 to learn about all this stuff,
19:42 but they never actually learn to make something real
19:45 unless you make that opportunity for them.
19:48 - Right. - And so seeing them
19:49 do that, it,
19:50 I think it really matured them to a degree
19:53 that I never experienced when I was growing up.
19:56 - [Natalie] Right.
19:56 - So that's really cool.
19:58 - [Natalie] Right, so these are the sidewalls,
19:59 this is a picture of the sidewalls,
20:01 we were cleaning them before putting them up.
20:04 - So the sidewall is made out of a plastic material
20:06 that they put on the sides of,
20:08 of the trucks for the underneath the trailers
20:11 of the trucks. - okay.
20:12 - It's like a nice, hard, strong plastic, that's flexible.
20:15 And then the backdrop we got is like this big silk,
20:18 like a parachute kind of cloth
20:20 and they printed the whole thing on there.
20:21 And so we got to- - Unfold it
20:24 and stretch it- - Stretch it out
20:25 and put it up on its- - And staple it on
20:27 and put it up.
20:29 - And so this was, you know,
20:30 a design that James had made
20:32 and the girls had worked with him on
20:35 that was on his computer.
20:37 - Right. - So it went
20:38 from his little 17-inch computer screen
20:40 to a 20 foot backdrop.
20:43 - Yeah. - And that was huge,
20:46 that was so cool. - Right, yeah.
20:47 - For them to see that.
20:49 And here we are starting to do some,
20:51 some lighting tests- - Okay.
20:52 - To see how it's gonna be.
20:54 And here's the first time they sat at the table.
20:56 We bought this table and stuck it there,
20:58 and the idea, this is James' idea now,
21:01 that we'd have two places to film them at.
21:04 One was in front of the TV, kind of like an introduction,
21:07 and welcome to the show
21:09 then they walk to the table and sit and discuss
21:12 about the different segments of the show.
21:13 - Right.
21:14 - (chuckling) And then he wanted
21:16 to bring the jib in. - Right.
21:18 - And I didn't think- - Well it's
21:20 an eight-foot jib, right?
21:21 - Yeah, it's not super big, but it's just our garage.
21:24 - [Natalie] It's a nine foot ceiling?
21:26 - [Jon] Yeah.
21:28 - [Natalie] Yeah, so we didn't have
21:29 a lot of room to play with.
21:30 - No, not at all.
21:32 And so he was trying to tell me in the early stages
21:34 about his idea about bringing this jib in
21:36 and I'm thinking,
21:37 it's not gonna work. - There's no way
21:39 cause it's gonna hit the ceiling, or.
21:40 - Yeah, it's just,
21:41 we don't have room for it. - It's too tight, yeah.
21:43 - And I was trying to, it took me a lot,
21:44 it took him a long time to explain the concept of,
21:47 of his idea of how this could flow.
21:50 - Right.
21:51 - Finally, I'm like, okay, that's a great idea,
21:53 it's your idea. I don't get it, but we'll go with it.
21:56 - Right. - And it worked.
21:57 - Right.
21:58 - So here's my 16-year-old son
22:01 schooling me on how to do production.
22:03 (laughing)
22:04 - I think you needed it.
22:06 (laughing)
22:08 - I'm just kidding. - I'll take it, you know.
22:10 - Yeah, but it's neat to see that he could,
22:13 you know, have that picture in his head.
22:15 - Yes. - And go forward.
22:17 - And push, push the envelope- - Yep.
22:19 - In God's service.
22:20 - Right.
22:21 - So the other challenge that we had
22:22 was the open, we needed a good professional open
22:26 for the show.
22:27 And I used to work at 3ABN as their graphic designer
22:30 and I did this for a living. - Right.
22:32 - I mean, this was my job
22:33 and so I helped them with that.
22:35 I was able to contribute a little bit.
22:36 - Right.
22:37 - Besides just being cameraman.
22:38 - Right, so this is the open.
22:40 - [Jon] Okay.
22:42 (upbeat inspiring music)
22:47 - [Marianne] We've grown up in the church
22:49 and have always been somewhat involved in outreach.
22:52 But how can we get involved in missions overseas?
22:55 My name is Marianne.
22:57 - [Lillian] And I'm Lillian, we wanted to find out.
23:00 Join us on our journey- (bonging)
23:03 - To discover the culture,
23:06 the lifestyle.
23:07 - [Marianne] The need, and the mission.
23:09 - [Lillian] In two of Southeast Asia's
23:11 least-reached countries.
23:13 - Welcome to Mission Trek.
23:19 Hello and welcome to a very special episode of Mission Trek.
23:22 - You'll remember that in the last episode
23:24 we visited the Atwell's and we got to see
23:26 their center of influence.
23:28 Then we met up with our good friend, Jim Castor,
23:31 and we took a cooking class.
23:32 - Jim Castor is a missionary
23:34 whose whole ministry revolves around the power of prayer.
23:37 - After the cooking class
23:39 he joined us for a prayer walk through the city of Bangkok.
23:42 - Obviously we couldn't go everywhere
23:43 in this huge city of about 12 million people.
23:46 But we could go to a few places.
23:48 - A lot of people, even some Christians,
23:51 think that prayer is a waste of time
23:52 and that we should do something tangible.
23:56 - Yeah, so that whole move from the TV, up on the side.
23:59 - When the open finished.
24:02 - Going down and they do the little intro
24:03 and then following them to the table,
24:05 and them sitting down at the table and talking,
24:07 that was James' idea.
24:08 - [Natalie] Yeah.
24:10 - That's like, I didn't think it was possible,
24:11 but he made it work.
24:13 - Yeah.
24:15 - So I'm a little bit of a proud dad.
24:16 - Yeah, well and it's so neat to see them
24:19 be able to take ideas like this
24:22 and then work through the issues.
24:24 'Cause we have columns,
24:25 we have like metal columns in our garage
24:27 and they're not- - Yeah.
24:28 - [Natalie] Conveniently located.
24:29 - No. - Especially not
24:30 for situations like this
24:31 so we're always like, okay,
24:32 we have to be just this side of the column,
24:34 and then, you know, after that, then we,
24:37 you know, move, or whatever. - Yeah.
24:39 - And so it was like not- - Working around
24:40 those columns was a pain in the neck.
24:42 - Yeah, yeah, but these young people, they just,
24:45 you know, they just kept working
24:46 and trying to figure out what to do.
24:48 James, especially was just like,
24:50 "Well, I know this can work."
24:51 And so worked it out- - Right.
24:52 - And it's just so neat to see
24:54 and the finished set that we saw there,
24:57 with the lights and, and you know, the hanging lights,
25:01 and the plants- - So cool.
25:02 - And just the way that it all came together,
25:05 it just looked so nice.
25:07 - So professional.
25:08 - Yeah, I'm just really thankful
25:09 that we could have the opportunity
25:11 to give these young people
25:13 this opportunity. - Yes, yes.
25:14 - So many times it's like our young people
25:17 just sit there, like Marianne talked about,
25:19 in the previous episode that we did,
25:23 talked about how so many times she goes somewhere
25:25 and she just sits and watches
25:27 because she doesn't- - Yeah.
25:28 - See what she can do. - Yeah, cause we taken
25:30 them on several mission trips.
25:31 We've taken them to India- - Right.
25:32 - We've taken them to Thailand,
25:33 but like Marianne says,
25:34 they just sit and watch- - Right.
25:36 - For them to actually contribute something.
25:38 - Right. - Is, it's paradigm shifting.
25:40 - Right, we shouldn't be afraid as parents
25:43 to encourage our young people to do things
25:45 that aren't comfortable,
25:47 or maybe that we've never done
25:50 because it empowers them- - Yes.
25:53 - To think outside the box,
25:54 for one thing. - Yes.
25:56 - It empowers them to seek for ways they can serve God
26:00 in unique, and interesting, and creative ways.
26:03 And- - But it also,
26:06 one of the challenges that some of the young people
26:08 that have wanted to go overseas tell us
26:10 is that they don't get
26:12 encouragement to go.
26:13 - Right.
26:15 - They don't get encouragement to,
26:16 to give their life in service for others to Christ.
26:18 - Right, and these young people are,
26:20 usually are college students,
26:22 that are considering a student missionary program,
26:25 or something of that nature, but yeah,
26:28 they're discouraged in many cases.
26:30 - Right, so we wanna encourage, you know,
26:33 whoever's in the sphere of your influence.
26:36 - Right.
26:38 - If they have any interest in serving God overseas,
26:40 say, to encourage them
26:42 to follow God's call- - Right.
26:44 - To follow the need- - Right.
26:46 - Wherever the need is.
26:47 That's where God's call really is.
26:49 - Right.
26:50 - And the upshot from the show
26:52 is that these young people that did this
26:55 are much more open, and much more focused
26:58 on finding a way to serve God in their lives.
27:02 - Right.
27:03 - We're hoping that this show
27:04 will inspire other young people
27:05 to ask God
27:07 what they can do for him- - Right, right.
27:10 - Because that is the path to happiness.
27:12 - Right, so we would like to encourage you,
27:16 if you are a young person, to ask God what you can do,
27:20 seek ways that you can serve him.
27:22 And if you are an older person,
27:24 we would like to invite you
27:26 to be a part of encouraging young people,
27:29 to do what God asks them to do
27:31 even if it's something we've never thought about,
27:33 even if it's something
27:34 we're not necessarily comfortable with,
27:36 because we can always pray for them
27:38 and God will protect them.
27:39 He will take care of those that follow him.
