17:21 What a blessed parish we are with Andrews Academy. For 25 Easters now, this
17:28 procession of hope that we begin together has been a sacred but beloved tradition
17:36 in this congregation. Pastor Esther introduced it to us 25 years ago, and we've

17:45 have no hope. We do grieve. There's no denying grief.
17:52 Karen and I are about to read the names of 35 individuals who died between last Easter
17:57 and this one. There's a whole lot of grief in this parish.

31:06 You say, "What's a black hole?" The scientist types are grinning, because they know the
31:12 answer. Us laymen look it up on the Web. Here's what I found -- "Black
31:17 holes are volumes of space where gravity is extreme enough to prevent the escape of even
31:23 the fastest moving particles. Not even light can break free, hence the name black hole."

31:38 Get this -- listen to these stats, news clip this week. Chron.com -- I think that's
31:44 probably the HoustonChronicle.com. News release.
31:49 "A group of astronomers have just discovered a rare, ultramassive black hole believed
31:55 to be one of the largest ever detected to date." Keep reading.
32:01 "The gargantuan black hole, which is said to have the mass of 30 billion suns --"
32:09 That's our sun. 30 billion of our suns are in that hole as a mass.
32:18 This black hole "is located at the center of a galaxy, hundreds of millions
32:23 of light-years from Earth. It was uncovered by a team led by Durham University
32:27 in the United Kingdom using a new technique known as gravitational lensing."
32:32 Black holes. Black holes, they're everywhere. I want to shift and pivot
32:40 on that black hole metaphor, and for a few moments with you, brood over over how the second
32:52 person of the Godhead who created black holes across the cosmos -- I'm talking about
33:01 Jesus. In the beginning, there was the word and the word was with God
33:05 and the word was with God. All things were made through Him.
33:14 Without Him, nothing was made that was made. I'm talking about that Jesus,
33:17 the word who became flesh, the Jesus who dwelt among us, hoisted halfway between heaven
33:26 and Earth on that awful Good Friday. The creator of black holes
33:35 is about to be sucked, pulled into the heart of the most destructive black hole ever
33:47 and ever. Amen. We just read it.
33:53 What's going on here? What were those words again? "My God, My God."
33:59 Last night in Gethsemane, as we reviewed last Sabbath, last night, it was "Abba, Papa,
34:07 Papa, no, not the cup." "Abba, Papa" last night. No, "Abba, Papa" now.
34:18 "My God, My God, you have forsaken Me. Why?" It's not a statement.
34:28 "You have abandoned Me. Why?" You know what? Jesus knows exactly
34:36 what's happening now. That's why He was pleading last night in Gethsemane,
34:42 "Get me out of here. I don't want that cup. Take the cup.
34:47 Take it away. Find another way." But -- How did He end the
34:54 prayer? "Not what I want but you want." Yeah.
35:01 Apparently this is what He wants. Oh, Jesus is no stranger
35:08 to this black hole. In fact, it's interesting, in the gospels, seven times --
35:12 count them seven times -- Jesus will end a parable, a story, or make an observation
35:20 with this awful ending, terrible ending. I put it on the screen for you.
35:25 You can see how bad it is. "...and they shall be thrown outside," Jesus speaking,
35:30 red letters, "and they shall be thrown outside into darkness, where there will be weeping
35:37 and gnashing of teeth..." What's He talking about? Whatever it is, it is so
35:43 terrible you don't want to go there. That's His point.
35:48 Because that, my friends, darkness, weeping, gnashing of teeth is His code language for
35:55 Hell -- H-E-L-L, Hell. You don't want to go there. You don't want your story to end
36:06 in darkness with weeping and gnashing of teeth. And what is hell?
36:15 Oh, we know Romans 6:23 well, don't we, you and I? For the wages of sin is death,
36:21 and the gift of God is what? Eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.
36:26 So whatever the wage is, it's the antithesis of the gift. And the gift is eternal.

37:13 angels for a little while, now crowned with glory and honor because He suffered death on the
37:19 cross." Keep reading. "So that by the grace of God,
37:22 He might taste death for everyone." Let's be really clear about this
37:28 right now. Hell is not eternal dying. Hell is eternal death.
37:39 If He descended into hell as the old Protestant confession of faith declares, then He would
37:46 still be dying if Hell were dying. It's not at all.
37:52 It's death. Black hole, oblivion sucked into the ravaging pull of that from
38:02 which you will never escape. Gone forever. He tasted that for you and me.
38:15 Unbelievable. Oh, here's another one. 2 Corinthians 5:21 --

38:27 righteousness of God." Something's going on. Three hours of funereal darkness

38:42 And by the way, it wasn't a whisper. It's not -- It's not a cry,
38:47 a whimper, mnh-mnh. "Megaphone" in the Greek, "megaphone" in English.
38:53 A loud voice. It's a scream, a naked scream. At the end of three torturous
38:59 hours of utter blackness. Black hole. Sucked in by sin's gravity.
39:09 Oblivion where there is no escape, that's where He went. God made Him to be sin
39:18 in order to save me from my sin. I bow before it. I cannot comprehend what I'm
39:26 talking of. Oh, and this is the familiar words of the ancient gospel
39:31 prophet Isaiah, as well. We know these words well. Isaiah 53 -- "Surely He,
39:35 the Messiah, took up our pain and bore our suffering, yet we considered Him
39:41 punished by God, stricken by Him, and afflicted." Black hole.
39:49 "But He was pierced for our transgressions, He was crushed for our iniquities.
39:55 The punishment that brought us peace was on Him, and by His wounds, we are healed."
40:00 Now, here it comes. "We all, like sheep, have gone astray, each of us has
40:04 turned to our own way," time and time and time again. Between two Easters,
40:10 how many times have we turned to our own way? You have and I have.
40:15 "Each of us has turned to our own way." And here it comes.
40:18 "The Lord has laid on Him --" The spotless Lamb of God who takes away the sin
40:25 of the world. "He has laid on Him --" In that awful blackness.
40:32 What did He lay on Him? What's it read?
40:35 The iniquity of how many of us? All of us.
40:39 Your darling sin, my darling sin.
40:41 Yep, there it was dealt with.
40:48 Wow. What's going on here?
40:53 The maker of all things loves and wants me.
40:56 That's what's going on. That's it.
41:00 He loved and wanted you so bad, He loved and wanted me so bad,
41:05 He let sin suck Him into the black hole of oblivion
41:10 from which no one escapes.
41:14 My, oh, my. Oh, my. Listen to Mead McGuire in that
41:23 book of his, "His Cross and Mine" -- "Probably the most dreadful
41:30 punishment men can inflict is solitary confinement in darkness.
41:35 It often drives men insane." Those of you that read the autobiography of
41:45 John McCain remember the torture he faced in what they called the Hanoi Hilton there in
41:51 North Vietnam during the war. Solitary confinement. No sentient being comes
42:00 in communication and touch with you. Dark, dark, alone.
42:11 McGuire is right. He goes on -- "The consciousness of His Father's presence,
42:17 which had sustained Jesus throughout His life, had left Him.
42:20 He was drinking that dreadful cup that He pleaded last night not to drink."
42:25 Please. "He was drinking that dreadful cup over which He had wrestled
42:29 so many hours in Gethsemane, but which He had never named. But now, with a sudden cry
42:36 of inexpressible woe, the words burst from His lips, 'My God, My God,
42:42 why hast thou forsaken me? He was grappling with the overwhelming sense
42:46 of abandonment and despair. All the pain and torture of the crucifixion
42:49 were as nothing to the horror of spiritual separation from God. In descending into that outer
42:55 darkness, He was suffering not only the sorrows of death, but the pains of hell."
43:03 Go to Hell. Some poor soul cries out. And He did.
43:12 He went to hell for you so you'll never go to hell.
43:21 Richard John Neuhaus, in his stirring book, "Death on a Friday Afternoon", puts it
43:27 this way, that naked scream -- "Something has been lost, something has been withdrawn,
43:33 and it cannot be called back."
43:40 Hmm. Matthew Arnold, the poet, in his poem, "Dover Beach",
43:48 captures a bit of that sense of lostness. "The Sea of Faith was once, too,
43:57 at the full and round Earth's shore. Lay like the folds of a bright
44:03 girdle furled. But now I only hear its melancholy, long, withdrawing
44:10 roar. Retreating to the breath. Of the night wind, down the vast
44:14 edges drear. And naked shingles of the world."
44:19 Did you catch that line? "Its melancholy, long, withdrawing roar."
44:28 "My God, My God, why have you forsaken me?" "Desire of Ages" offers the last
44:37 word -- "Satan with his fierce temptations --"
44:43 There on Calvary in that funereal darkness. "Wrung the heart of Jesus.
44:49 The Savior could not see through the portals of the tomb. Hope did not present to Him.

45:02 that Their --" Capital "T". "Their separation was to be

45:18 Finis.
45:24 Wow. "Desire of Ages" goes on -- "But it was not the spear
45:28 thrust, it was not the pain of the cross, that caused the death of Jesus.
45:33 That cry, uttered 'with a loud voice' at the moment of death, the stream of blood and water
45:37 that flowed from His side, declared that Jesus died of a broken heart.
45:42 His heart was broken by mental anguish. He was slain by the sin of the
45:50 world."
45:55 So whatever I laugh off cost Him Hell. Whatever I dismiss with a silly
46:07 grin cost Him Hell.
46:15 He thought their separation was to be eternal. He thought that He would never
46:23 return from this black hole. And so He dies of a broken heart for you, for me.
46:36 It cannot be, but it is. Oh, of course, we've been singing with all the gusto.
46:46 We could ramp up that mighty, triumphant declaration, "Christ the Lord is risen
46:53 today." You're right. Love rose on the first day, but
47:02 it was love with a broken heart that will be broken forever and ever.
47:14 Yeah, some people come to me and say, "Oh, Dwight, come on, get real.
47:19 He didn't really die forever. That's impossible. He knew He was coming out of
47:24 it." Oh, really? I end with a story that I heard
47:32 sometime in childhood somewhere. The story of a young boy who was terribly sick, so sick, in fact,
47:40 that the doctors determined that unless they could find a rare but perfect match for the boy,
47:49 it was curtains. He would die. They tested the whole family.
47:54 His little sister, you guessed it -- rare but perfect match.
48:02 The doctors, grateful. The parents look down into that little girl's face, and they ask
48:09 if she'd be willing to give her blood to save her brother's life.
48:17 She looked away for a moment, ponderous written on her face. Thought.
48:27 The mother looks back and into the downturn faces -- faces that are waiting for an answer.
48:32 She nods her curls. She will give her blood. The med techs are ready to go.
48:40 In goes the needle into her elbow. And soon that little plastic bag
48:45 began to fill with her life-saving blood. It's not a hurried procedure.
48:51 It takes time, but eventually the procedure is through. And as they're leading her
48:57 out of the room, she looks up at her father, the tears in her eyes and a quiver in her voice.
49:09 She said, "Daddy, Daddy, when will I die now?" The father smiled, looked down
49:21 at her. And then it hit him like a bolt of lightning.
49:27 She had just gone through that procedure believing that when the procedure was through,
49:30 she would die. I ask you a question. Academic but essential.
49:38 Did that little girl die for her brother? Yes or no?
49:44 Yes or no? Tell me yes or no. >> Yes.
49:48 >> She did right here. Did Jesus die forever for that sin that I wish to let go of,
49:59 but struggle to hold onto? Did He die forever for that sin? Yes or no?
50:05 >> Yes. >> Yes, He did, forever right here.
50:18 The black hole. Into that black hole. That is the truth
50:25 of Good Friday, Holy Sabbath, and Easter Sunday. Some of you right now, I know,
50:35 are standing on the precipice of the black hole of death. Death, period.
50:43 You know it's coming. And unless there is a miracle, as Pastor Jenifer described,
50:52 death will arrive. I want to say to you who are pondering this gargantuan black
51:03 hole you have never been to before.
51:07 I want to say to you that the glad tidings of Easter
51:15 are proof -- Jesus, if He had not come out of
51:22 that grave, would not have accomplished what He set out to
51:27 do. In my humble opinion,
51:32 the resurrection of Christ is the existential evidence
51:35 we need to prove He went into the black hole and emerged
51:45 for you and me forever.
51:53 And today, in that ravaging black hole, that the enemy
51:58 would make certain devours the entire human race.
52:03 Hey, listen, listen, listen, before you leave.
52:05 In the heart of that black hole of oblivion today because of
