10:41 something that's lost especially like a piece to a puzzle or a
10:44 piece to a little play set that my son is playing with or maybe
10:47 a book that I really wanted to read or, the sky's the limit.
10:51 Right? It makes me so bothered until I can find it and today's
10:56 story will talk about that. The Pharisees didn't understand
11:01 Jesus. They just could not wrap their minds around Jesus. He
11:06 would hang out with sinners, he talked to them, he ate with them
11:09 he healed them. Uugh why would you do that? That just... they
11:15 couldn't comprehend it. It was unlike anything that they had
11:18 ever, ever thought was appropriate in the past.
11:21 Let's pick up the story in Luke 15, Matthew, Mark, Luke, we're
11:28 almost there, there we go. Luke 15 verse 1. All right. Luke 15
11:33 verse one says:...
11:34 Then all the tax collectors and the sinners drew near to him
11:37 to hear him.
11:39 They got it. Right? They understood way more than
11:42 the Pharisees and the teachers of that day did.
11:44 The Pharisees and scribes complained saying,
11:47 This man receives
11:49 sinners and eats with them. [Oh ah, goodness. So] He spoke this
11:55 parable to them saying: What man of you having a hundred
12:00 sheep, if he loses one of them will not leave the 99 in the
12:05 wilderness and go after the one who is lost until he finds it.
12:10 Picture this: It's a cold, dark night and we're just getting
12:15 home. You see, we're shepherds and as we get home our sheep are
12:20 walking into their fold. Now a fold is like a pen or a fenced
12:25 in area where they might sleep for the night. And as they pass
12:27 us and go through the gate we count them. Right? We want to
12:30 make sure that we didn't lose any and as we count, counting up
12:35 to a hundred... Can you guys do that? Probably a lot of you can.
12:38 Maybe some of you could even count up to a thousand. Boy that
12:41 would be an activity that would take awhile. Right? I'm sure
12:44 your parents wouldn't mind. A hundred. So he counted and
12:48 counted and he got up to 99 and he thought, oooh. Wait maybe
12:52 I missed one. Maybe one scurried around and through and I missed
12:56 it. So what do you do? You count again. When my husband and I do
13:01 our budget, and I'm even using a calculator, it's a lot of
13:04 numbers to add up, sometimes I get different numbers at the end
13:08 and I do best out of three usually so hopefully out of
13:11 three times I get the same number twice so I can assume
13:14 that that number is correct. Same thing for the shepherd.
13:18 And he counted again and he got 99 and he thought, okay, I'll
13:20 just check one more time. Maybe and nope 99. That cold dark
13:26 night you see the shepherd heading back out into the fields
13:29 back out into the mountain passes looking and looking and
13:34 looking, calling, searching. Probably had a candle or some
13:37 sort of light to try to find that lost sheep. Sure enough
13:41 pretty soon he hears the sheep, bleating, making a noise. Right?
13:46 And he hurries there. And does he scold the sheep and say, You
13:50 bad and naughty sheep. How dare you run away from me like that?
13:53 I'm going to get you. You come here. I'll give you a little
13:56 whupping with my shepherd's rod. No the shepherd, oop I gave it
14:01 away. Jesus represented by the shepherd in the story, he picked
14:05 up the sheep and said, Oh buddy, I'm so glad I found you. And he
14:09 checked the sheep over, checked the sheep's body to see if it
14:13 was hurt and put some salve or some ointment on the wounds and
14:17 picked up the sheep and put it over his shoulders and maybe
14:19 carried it like cradled it like a baby, I don't know, and
14:23 carried the sheep back home to the fold. Isn't that a beautiful
14:29 picture of how much Jesus loves us. Beautiful picture. And Jesus
14:34 trying to show that to the Pharisees and everyone who was
14:38 listening, to the Gentiles, to the Jews, to everyone. He's like
14:42 I love you this much. In fact, Jesus, like I already slipped
14:47 and told you, Jesus is represented by this good
14:50 shepherd. And Jesus from the very beginning, from before time
14:54 began, Jesus make the choice to come rescue us if we needed
14:59 rescuing. Sadly we made the choice that we did need rescuing
15:05 In fact, our lesson said and I thought this was really
15:07 interesting, out of millions of worlds that were created only
15:10 the earth, us, obeyed Satan and we're like lost sheep now.
15:17 Right? Because of that choice. Jesus the good shepherd, he
15:21 would have come down here for one person. If he knew, and he
15:26 knows the end from the beginning that in heaven only one person
15:30 would choose to be there with him, he still would have come
15:35 down and died for that one person. Wow! Now I'm having a
15:40 hard time even wrapping my mind around that and I feel like I'll
15:43 be studying that for all of eternity, how that love works.
15:49 That agape love of God. Just... I got nothing. Miss Michelle is
15:58 speechless and it takes a lot for me to be speechless. Right?
16:02 Wow! Thank you Jesus! We'd all be lost forever just like that
16:07 sheep would have been lost forever if we had not had Jesus
16:13 come. Wow! Forever, that's a long time. And instead we have
16:19 the forever promise of being with Jesus forever. Wow! Well a
16:27 lot of times in the Bible you'll notice that important things
16:30 are not just
16:32 said once and in fact they're not just said twice. A lot of
16:34 times they're said three or more times in the Bible. And maybe
16:37 your parents do the same thing with you. They may say, I need
16:41 your help with this, um I still need your help with this, I
16:45 could really use your help with this. And that's a big important
16:49 thing that's also in the Bible. The more times that something is
16:52 said the more important it is. So it's really interesting
16:56 because in Luke chapter 15 it actually goes over three stories
17:02 about being lost. The first one was about the sheep. Right? The
17:06 next one we're going to talk about this week and the one
17:10 after that we're going to talk about the following week. Okay.
17:13 So let's hop on into story number two about something else
17:18 that got lost. You see:
17:24 For what woman [it says in verse eight] having 10 silver coins if
17:27 she loses but one coin does not light a lamp, sweep the house
17:32 and try to look everywhere until she finds that coin. Right?
17:40 You might say, Oh it's just one silver coin. But in reading what
17:45 the lesson said and doing a little research online I found
17:47 that that one coin probably a wedding gift
17:52 that she had received
17:53 or a gift from someone much like the things that I have that are
17:56 special to me, were given to me. Oh if I lost any of them I'd be
18:00 so sad. And not only was it probably a special gift given
18:05 to her, ten silver coins, the coins were more than likely the
18:10 Greek coin which were called the drachmas, I'm not sure if I'm
18:13 saying that right because obviously I didn't live back
18:15 then, but each one was worth about a day's wages. So it was
18:19 kind of like her savings. She had 10 days of wages. That's
18:24 almost two weeks. Right? It is two work weeks. And those were
18:28 her savings and they were really special to her. Right? She
18:31 searched high and low. Now why would she need to light a lamp?
18:34 Well, you see back then homes often didn't have windows so
18:39 they were very dark inside and fact they might leave the door
18:42 open during the day to get light but during the evening hours and
18:44 when it was past sunset they'd have to light a lamp. And she
18:47 would search and search until she found her coin. Let's find
18:50 out what happens next.
18:52 And when she found it [phew, I like this story] she calls her
18:56 friends and neighbors together and says, Rejoice with me for I
18:59 have found the piece which I had lost. Likewise I say to you,
19:03 there is joy in the presence of the angels of God over one
19:08 sinner who repents.
19:12 God loves sinners so much and he was trying to help the people
19:16 there realize that we're all sinners and he loves us all so
19:20 much. He will search high and low, near and far, east and west
19:25 north and south, all over, to find us and to bring us back to
19:29 him. There is no place that we can run that's too far away from
19:33 Jesus. He is always there the second we ask him. How powerful
19:39 is that?
19:40 There is joy in the presence of the angels of God over one
19:42 sinner who repents. Luke 15 verse 10.
19:46 Now before we wrap up today's story I'd just like to talk real
19:51 quick about repent. What does that mean because I think it's
19:54 important the words that we're memorizing and not just memorize
19:58 them. It's also important to realize what the words mean that
20:02 we say. And this is for me too. Sometimes we might say things
20:05 and they might mean something that we don't realize or that we
20:08 do realize and we shouldn't actually say them. Right?
20:11 So let's jump back to repent. It's important to know the
20:14 meaning of a word. What does it mean to repent? Hmm. To repent.
20:19 If I repent of my sin, what am I doing? Well I'm admitting that
20:24 my sin was wrong. It's an important thing because a lot
20:29 of times we like to make excuses So like when we feel guilty
20:34 about something, like the Holy Spirit's whispering in our ear,
20:37 like bad choice, that was a bummer. Ah, did you want to say
20:42 anything to God about that? We're like, well I didn't mean
20:45 to. Like I'm sure He gets it. It was just a mistake. Like I won't
20:49 do it again. This is like the first time that it's ever
20:51 happened so like mmm. No repentance, true repentance, is
20:56 that when we see what we did that was wrong repentance means
21:01 being truly sorry for that thing and what does that verse say.

21:09 is a party in heaven. The angels just throw a big party and
