08:40 there. Why you may ask. Well they were headed to meet up with
08:44 the crowd coming from Bethany. You know, the crowd we're in.
08:48 And they were meeting. Now that didn't make the priests or the
08:50 rulers there very happy did it? Because they wanted them there
08:54 under their instruction and under their influence. But what
08:57 was happening and what was happening with this crowd?
09:00 Let's investigate further. Now the disciples, I see them right
09:04 over there. They're in the crowd too. Hmm. Jesus must be close by
09:08 And it looks like the disciples are really excited about
09:11 something. I wonder what? Hmm. Let's join the people as we're

09:25 actually hearing them from God's word. We're going to go to the
09:28 book of Luke and we're going to go to chapter 19. Now that's
09:33 towards the end of Luke. Luke chapter 19 verse 29...
09:38 And it came to pass when he drew near to Bethpage and Bethany
09:43 at the mountain called Olivet that He sent two of his
09:47 disciples...
09:48 with a strange request. Can you hear them talking over there?
09:52 Hmm. Let's listen and hear what he says:...
09:54 Go into the village opposite you whereas you enter you will find
10:00 a colt tied on which no one has ever sat. Loose it and bring it
10:04 here.
10:06 Jesus always walks everywhere he goes. Even I know that. And yet
10:10 he wants a colt who is a young donkey that's never been ridden
10:14 before. That's so strange. And Jesus continued to speak:...
10:18 If anyone else asks you why are loosing it, thus you shall say
10:23 to him, Because the Lord has need of it.
10:28 Hmm. Interesting. I can see the disciples talking over there.
10:31 I know what they're thinking because the people who usually
10:35 ride on donkeys and enter into Jerusalem in great style and
10:38 fashion are important people like kings and rulers. I wonder
10:43 if today is the day that Jesus is going to announce that He's
10:48 the king of the Jews. Just like we've been hoping. Right?
10:52 Now let's keep reading and find out what happened next.
10:55 So those who were sent went on their way and found it just as
10:59 He had said to them. But as they were loosing the colt, the owner
11:03 said to them, Why are you loosing my colt. And they said,
11:07 Well the Lord has need of him. [The owner must have agreed]
11:11 and they brought the colt to Jesus. And they threw their
11:13 clothes on the colt and set Jesus on top of their clothes.
11:17 Can you imagine. They didn't want Jesus to have to sit on
11:20 that smelly donkey. Right? And so they put their clothes on top
11:23 like their outer robes and stuff on top and Jesus is sitting
11:26 there. Let's follow Him. Jesus headed towards Jerusalem riding
11:31 on this donkey. And, if I remember right just the other
11:36 day in school I was learning about a prophecy.
11:38 Have you heard of
11:40 prophecies before? That's right. They are things that are said
11:43 about what's going to happen in the future and this one came
11:47 from the book Zechariah. Those are in the scriptures that Jesus
11:53 studied as well when he was a kid. We call them today, the Old
11:57 Testament. Let's see if I can find it. Esther, Job, Psalms,
12:02 Proverbs, Ecclesiastes, Song of Solomon, Isaiah, Jeremiah,
12:05 Lamentations, Ezekiel, Daniel, Hosea, Joel, Amos, Obadiah,
12:11 Jonah, Micah, Nahum, Habakkuk, Zephaniah, Haggai, Zechariah.
12:15 Oop, there it is. Haggai, Zechariah and the last one
12:20 Malachi. Here we go. Now the Old Testament is full of
12:25 prophecies that talk about Jesus and this one that I just
12:30 remember hearing the other day was in Zechariah 9 verse 9.
12:34 I think it's coming true today! Nine verse nine says:...
12:38 Rejoice greatly, O daughter of Zion. Shout O daughter of
12:41 Jerusalem. Behold your king is coming to you. He is just and
12:45 having salvation, lowly and riding on a donkey, a colt, the
12:49 foal of a donkey.
12:51 It's coming true today! Now we know today that if they had
12:56 really been listening to Jesus then they would have known that
12:58 he wasn't going to proclaim Himself as earthly king this day
13:02 but you can tell by the looks of them that the disciples over
13:05 there, they have their hopes up that that's in fact what's
13:07 happening. The prophecy is being fulfilled pretty soon.
13:11 I'm taking off my coat and laying it on the road. Do you
13:13 see some palm branches over there. Oh, we could wave those
13:16 in honor of Jesus. Wouldn't that be awesome? And pretty soon
13:19 everyone was laying their coats on the road and waving palm
13:24 branches in honor of Jesus, the Messiah.
13:27 And as He went many spread their clothes on the road and then as
13:31 He was drawing near the descent of the Mount of Olives the whole
13:34 multitude [the whole crowd] and the disciples began to rejoice
13:39 and praise God with a loud voice for all the mighty works they
13:42 had seen saying, Blessed is the King who comes in the name of
13:46 the Lord. Peace in heaven and glory in the highest. Some of
13:51 the Pharisees called to Jesus from the crowd...
13:52 Do you hear them? Yeah, they don't sound very happy, do they?
13:56 Teacher, rebuke your disciples.
13:59 Uuh, rebuke your disciples? What a joyful welcome he was
14:05 receiving. And many of the people, well ah I think the
14:07 person, right over there, weren't they healed by Jesus? Weren't
14:10 they blind before? And I think that person. They couldn't walk
14:13 as I recall. They had been healed. Lazarus, you can just
14:18 picture him leading the donkey that Jesus is sitting on and the
14:21 priests and rulers over there are upset! Now Jesus, as we know
14:26 today, wasn't becoming an earthly king but He knew that
14:30 this would bring attention to His mission that was going to be
14:33 fulfilled at the end of this week. And you hear those priests
14:39 and Pharisees. They are complaining and complaining
14:42 What did Jesus say to them? Listen.
14:44 But He answered and said to them I tell you if these should keep
14:49 silent the stones would immediately cry out.
14:54 That's right. If this crowd of people here surrounding us would
14:58 be quiet, the stones would cry out in praise of Jesus. Everyone
15:01 stopped at the top of Mount of Olives and what a view.
15:04 Jerusalem. The beautiful white marble temple with the gold trim
15:08 Can you see it now in your mind's eye? But they thought
15:12 Jesus would be proud and happy and instead they looked there
15:14 and He's crying. He was remembering all the people of
15:18 Israel who had again and again said no to God and how much
15:24 sadness it brought. Prophets' warnings, loving punishment
15:27 brought on through God. And He'd forgive them and they'd mess up
15:31 again. In verse 42 Jesus said:
15:36 If you had known, even you, especially in these days the
15:39 things that make for your peace, but now they are hidden from
15:41 your eyes, for the days will come upon you when enemies will
15:44 build an embankment around you [talking to Jerusalem], surround
15:47 you and close you up on every side and level you and your
15:51 children within you to the ground and they will not leave
15:53 one stone upon another because you did not know the time of
15:57 your visitation.
15:58 He was seeing the future of Jerusalem as well and it was
16:01 making him so sad. Now Jesus had explained the kingdom.
16:07 Because they even called some Romans over, the priests and
16:09 rulers couldn't stop the crowd so they called the soldiers over
16:12 and Jesus explained to them what was happening and He wasn't
16:15 being an earthly king. They got it and they believed Jesus.
16:19 The craziness in the crowd was getting out of control as the
16:22 Pharisees were trying to distract people and people were
16:24 crying out praises and Jesus and His disciples... Wa, where did
16:28 they go? They were just here. Did you see them leave? They
16:31 quietly slipped away to the temple. It was actually quite
16:36 quiet there. And Jesus pictured, He could see the sacrifices that
16:41 were happening there and He knew that that week He would be the
16:44 ultimate sacrifice, the real Lamb of God. Wow! Fulfilling the
16:49 prophecy in Isaiah. You can check it out in Isaiah 53
16:52 verse 7. But now the disciples are headed back to Bethany in
16:58 the evening. When the crowd looked around to find Him to
17:01 make Him king, he was nowhere to be seen. But, boy, did this get
17:06 a lot of attention and everyone in Jerusalem and Bethany and all
17:10 the surrounding areas were talking, the town was buzzing
17:13 with talk of Jesus. Jesus! Did you hear what happened? And that
17:20 Sunday night you would think that Jesus would have been
17:23 exhausted from all the excitement of the day and He was
17:25 but what did Jesus do? He stayed up all night talking to his
17:32 Father. He knew that the events of the coming week, how they
17:36 would test Him and how He would be just tempted and how
17:41 everything would be so difficult and He knew that He needed that
17:44 power from God. On Monday morning Jesus headed back to
17:49 Jerusalem and as He passed by a fig orchard He saw a tree with

17:56 was going to have some food and He was really hungry. In Mark 11
18:01 let's back up to Mark. Matthew, Mark, the second gospel, Mark 11
18:05 it talks about what Jesus said to the fig tree. Mark 11 verses
18:09 12 and 13. Let's jump to 13:...
18:12 And seeing from afar a fig tree having leaves He went to see
18:15 perhaps He could find something on it. And when he came to it
18:18 he found nothing but leaves for it was not the season for figs.
18:21 In response, Jesus said to the tree [verse 14], Let no one eat
18:25 fruit from you ever again.
18:27 When His disciples hear that, they thought that was quite
18:29 interesting that He would say that to a fig tree. Now this was
18:33 actually a lesson that he was trying to teach them wasn't it?
