05:02 (Mr. Prewitt) Today we're going to be talking about dogs and I
05:06 want to tell you about a story that really happened to me.
05:08 I was walking on a mountain full of monkeys when I saw something
05:12 up ahead on the ground. But it wasn't a monkey. It was coming
05:16 towards me very quickly and it was ferocious, barking and
05:19 snarling and showing its fangs and it was a mother dog. You
05:25 know, you could tell that she was a mother and she was so
05:29 angry. I had never seen her before. I knew the dogs on my
05:31 mountain. Where did you come from? But she couldn't talk back
05:34 to me. But I knew someone probably dropped her off and do
05:39 you know why she was so ferocious? It's because she was
05:43 scared. She was afraid and I looked behind her and I saw she
05:49 had puppies. So I named her Suzie-Q. I talked to Suzie and
05:55 over the course of several weeks I decided, I'm going to make
05:57 friends with this dog because I noticed that Suzie, she was
06:01 barking at people on bicycles Rrrr, and she bark at people in
06:05 cars, Rrr, and she'd bark at people who were walking by
06:08 Rrr-rrr. Suzie was just a terribly ferocious dog bothering
06:14 everybody. So I had my methods. I won't tell you what I did.
06:17 But once I'd made friends with Suzie, you know what happened?
06:21 Suzie was converted. Now she was a cuddlebug. She loved to come
06:27 near me and, you know what dogs do. She'd kind of back into me
06:29 and try to get as close as she could and kind of push into my
06:32 leg and Suzie would run up. She'd want to smell my breath
06:35 so she'd jump up on me and she was just so friendly. What
06:40 happened is an idea that's described in the Bible. It's in
06:44 1 John chapter 4. Let me read it to you. First John 4 verse 17.
06:50 It says:
07:09 You know what I read here. I read that love can cast out fear
07:15 Why was she so ferocious? It was because she was afraid. She was
07:20 afraid I'd hurt her puppies or hurt her. And when she knew that
07:24 I loved her, her fear went away and her ferociousness went away.
07:27 Now young friends. You know, that you might know people too
07:32 that have anger all the time that always seem like they're
07:35 brats or bullies. Do you know that if you will try hard to
07:40 show them love and kindness sometimes the effect is that
07:44 they'll be born again, they'll be converted. That really what's
07:47 going on is they're just afraid. They're insecure and when they
07:51 know that you really care about them it'll make a difference for
07:54 them. So don't forget 1 John 4:18. It says in the last half
07:58 of the verse that fear has torment. Do you think that Suzie
08:02 liked being ferocious? Of course not. But I'll tell you once
08:07 Suzie began being friendly there was one group that she wasn't
08:12 friendly with. That was some of the people that rode the
08:16 bicycles and I wondered why but I found out. It was because
08:21 these were the people that when she was being ornery and mean
08:24 they threw rocks at her and even after she was born again she
08:29 didn't forget that. So be careful the things you say, the
08:33 way you hurt people when you try to get them back for the
08:36 mean things they do to you even if they're born again, it might
08:40 hurt your friendship with them. We can learn a lot from Suzie.
08:43 That perfect love casts out fear and when fear is gone and love
08:48 comes we can be ready for Jesus. Let me pray with you.
08:51 Our Father in heaven, I'm asking that you would teach us
08:56 how to find the people like Suzie in our life that are

10:30 We're still on Tuesday of Jesus' last week and this is, as we
10:35 said the last day that Jesus taught in the temple. There was
10:38 one thing that He needed to do that he hadn't... He'd done it
10:42 here and there but never super, super blatently. Well what was
10:45 that? You see His whole life had testified to what His mission
10:50 was and who He truly was and He was pointing others to God and
10:54 what God's character is like. Now the rulers and the Pharisees
10:58 the priests and most of them knew that what He said was true
11:01 but they had refused to believe in Him and follow Him. But there
11:06 were some people that were still on the fence. They were
11:08 wondering, is Jesus the Messiah? Is He truly the Son of God?
11:12 Is He truly the promised one? Jesus needed to plainly call out
11:17 the leaders, the religious leaders of that day and tell the
11:22 people what they were truly about and let the people know
11:25 maybe some things that they didn't know about their leaders.
11:29 Jesus said this although in a very kind voice but one full of
11:33 authority and pity. He said it with kingly authority and He
11:37 said it with power and people listened and they believed what
11:41 He said. And no one could really argue with what He was saying
11:44 about the priests and Pharisees and leaders because all of it
11:48 was true. If they fact checked it, it would have been true.
11:52 And He said this without fear, which is amazing because he laid
11:57 some real big accusations down that were true and we find those
12:02 in Matthew 23 verses 1-36. I'm just going to read a few of them
12:07 If you wanted to read Jesus' whole speech that He gave I
12:13 guess what He said, you could do that but Wow there are some
12:17 really crazy things that He said that were true so they weren't
12:21 even crazy they were true but it was amazing that He had the
12:25 strength and courage to say these things about these very
12:27 powerful leaders of the time. Let's jump in right away here.
12:31 It says here in Matthew 23 Jesus spoke to the multitudes and to
12:37 His disciples saying, The scribes and Pharisees sit in
12:40 Moses's seat. Therefore, whatever they tell you to do
12:43 observe, that observe and do but do not do according to their
12:48 works for they say, but they do not do.
12:51 This is just the beginning.
12:53 For they bind heavy burdens hard to bear and lay them on men's
12:57 shoulders but they themselves they will not move them with one
13:00 of their fingers.
13:02 Whoa and it just gets worse. Let's jump ahead a little bit in
13:05 Matthew 23: They love the best places at feasts and the best
13:09 seats in the synagogues and greetings in the market place
13:12 and to be called by men, Rabbi, Rabbi. But you do not be called
13:16 Rabbi for one is your teacher, the Christ, and you are all
13:21 brethern. Do not call anyone on earth your Father for one is
13:24 your Father and He is in heaven.
13:25 And He continues to talk about what the Pharisees, the
13:30 religious leaders had done wrong And He called them Woes, like
13:33 Woe, watch out.
13:35 But woe to you scribes and Pharisees, you hypocrits, [means
13:39 you say one thing and do another] for you shut up the
13:42 kingdom of heaven against men for you neither go in yourselves
13:46 nor do you allow those who are entering to go in. [Wow] Woe to

13:56 nothing but whoever swears by the gold of the temple, he is
13:58 obliged to perform it. [It just doesn't make sense what you say]
14:02 Fools and blind but which is greater? The gold of the temple
14:04 or the temple that sanctifies the gold.
14:10 And Jesus continues to just tell them one thing after another
14:14 that they've done wrong.
14:15 Woe to you scribes and Pharisees you hypocrits for you pay tithe
14:20 in mint and anise and cummin and have neglected the weightier
14:22 matters of the law such as justice and mercy and faith.
14:25 These you ought to have done without leaving the others
14:29 undone. [And he continues] Woe [woe, woe, woe] to you scribes
14:35 and Pharisees hypocrits [again and again and again] because you
14:39 build the tombs of the prophets and adorn the monuments of the
14:41 righteous and say, Oh if we had lived in the days of our fathers
14:44 we would not have been partakers with them in the blood of the
14:46 prophets. Therefore, you are witnesses against yourselves
14:49 that you are sons of those who murdered those prophets. Fill up
14:56 then the measure of your fathers' guilt. Serpents, brood
14:59 of vipers, how can you escape the condemnation of hell? [Whoa]
15:04 Therefore indeed I send you prophets, wise men and scribes
15:07 Some of them you will kill and crucify and some of them you
15:10 you will scourge in your synagogue and persecute from
15:12 city to city that on you may come all the righteous blood
15:18 shed on earth and from the blood of the righteous Abel to the
15:21 blood of Zechariah the son of Berechiah whom you have murdered
15:26 between the temple and the altar Assuredly, I say to you all
15:28 these things will come upon this generation.
15:31 And I skipped some verses here and there. That is a loaded
15:37 chapter isn't it of what Jesus to the scribes and Pharisees
15:40 to the leaders of that day. You can imagine, it was not well
15:45 received. Then Jesus continues. He wasn't done yet. This wasn't
15:51 a parable anymore folks. This was Jesus putting it all out
15:55 there. He was showing what they were really like. You may have
16:00 heard these verses before. In verse 37, 38 and 39 I'd like to
16:04 read those to you.
16:06 Oh Jerusalem, Jerusalem, the one who kills the prophets and
16:08 stones those who are sent to her How often I wanted to gather
16:12 your children together as a hen gathers her chicks
16:16 under her wings
16:17 but you were not willing. See your house is left to you
16:23 desolate. For I say to you, you shall see me no more till you
16:27 say blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord.
16:30 Your house? Wasn't this God's house? But no, after they
16:35 rejected Jesus, it was no longer God's house. They kept using it
16:41 for many years, nearly 40 years until it was then destroyed.
16:45 When Jesus died it was no longer God's house. The Jews had
16:49 finally rejected the Messiah. Now this was a super sad last
16:58 visit to the temple, wasn't it? But He delivered a very
17:00 important message then. Now you see outside the
17:04 temple some Greeks
17:05 had come. They had heard of Jesus and about Him cleansing
17:08 the temple. They were there for Passover and they wanted to know
17:11 more about Him, but they were Gentiles so they couldn't go
17:13 into the inner courts of the temple. So how did they get
17:16 Jesus's attention? In John, it talks about it. In John 12 verses
17:22 20-22. John 12 verses 20-22. It says,
17:27 Now there were certain Greeks among those who came up to
17:31 worship at the feast. Then they came to Philip who was from
17:35 Bethsaida of Galilee and said to him, saying sir, we wish to
17:39 see Jesus. They found one of Jesus's disciples and who knows
17:43 someone might find you someday and tell you, I wish to see
17:48 Jesus. Could you show them what Jesus is like? Hmm. Philip came
17:52 and told Andrew and in turn Andrew and Philip went together
17:55 and told Jesus.
17:56 But Jesus answered them saying, The hour is come that the Son of
17:59 man should be glorified. Most assuredly I say to you, Unless a
18:02 grain of wheat falls onto the ground and dies, it remains
18:06 alone. But if it dies, it produces much grain. He who
18:10 loves his life will lose it, and he who hates his life in this
18:13 world will keep it for eternal life. If anyone serves Me, let
18:16 him follow Me and where I am there my servant will also be.
18:21 If anyone serves Me him my Father will honor.
18:26 What a cool message he shared with those Greeks wasn't it?
18:30 He said, This one kernal of grain we could just let it live.
18:34 Right? And if it dies, we'll have a huge harvest of grain
18:38 like seeds. Right. Seeds technically have to die and be
18:44 planted in order to grow again. He was talking about what was
18:47 going to happen to Him that very weekend, wasn't He? He sure was.
18:51 And there were listening. Isn't it interesting that at Jesus'
18:57 birth Gentiles came. Where did they come from? The wise men
19:00 came from the east and they came to see the Baby Jesus. And at
19:05 the end of Jesus' life the Greeks came. They came from the
19:09 west and they came to learn about Jesus. Isn't that cool how
19:14 Jesus' life ended and began with everyone seeking Him. Well not
19:19 everyone right? Interesting that the Gentiles were seeking him
19:23 more than the Jews were. Very sad isn't it. Now in John 12
19:28 verse 24 it talked about the kernel of wheat. Right? And in
19:32 verse 25 it talked about how the kernel of wheat had to die. That
19:36 symbolizes us also dying to ourself and Jesus helping us to
19:41 combat those selfish temptations that the devil throws at us.
19:44 Jesus showed people what God was truly like didn't He? And the
19:49 world could also see what Satan was like and see him for who he
19:55 truly is. Now the disciples at this point were still sad,
19:59 confused and disappointed. They were afraid as well. This wasn't
20:04 turning out the way that Sunday had started with the donkey ride
20:07 into Jerusalem. That had been going as they had wanted it to
20:10 go, right, according to their plan. But they could see as they
20:14 were leaving the temple on Tuesday that things weren't

20:25 confused by now. I mean a lot of things that had happened
20:28 during Jesus' ministry were confusing to them but by now
20:30 they were just befuddled. They couldn't understand. In Mark
20:34 chapter 13 verse 1 it says:
20:36 Then as He went out of the temple one of the disciples said
20:40 to Him, Teacher see what manner of stones and buildings are here
20:44 And Jesus answered and said to him, Do you see those great
20:48 buildings? Not one stone shall be left upon another that shall
20:52 not be thrown down. Well if they were confused before, they were
20:56 even more confused now. And Matthew, Mark and Luke, three
21:02 gospels all contain Jesus's answer to their question,
21:06 because this was very confusing to them. Let's continue reading
21:11 here what that question was.
21:12 Now as He sat on the Mount of Olives opposite the temple Peter
21:16 James, John and Andrew asked Him privately, Tell us when will
21:22 these things be and what will be the sign when all these things
