05:20 friends with a Catholic priest in town. One day they were
05:25 walking down the street together and they see the evangelical
05:30 preacher from another church coming their way. And when this
05:35 preacher sees the Catholic priest coming his way, he just
05:39 goes and stands right in front of him and he tells him, Your
05:43 church doesn't follow what the Bible says because the Bible
05:47 clearly teaches that we shouldn't have images and bow
05:51 down to them and your church has images and people bow down to
05:56 them so you are not the true church. You don't follow what
06:00 the Bible says. Well the Catholic replies, Yeah I know
06:05 my church doesn't follow everything the Bible teaches
06:09 but your church does not either because if you keep reading the
06:15 commandments the fourth commandment clearly states that
06:17 Saturday is God's holy day so that's actually the right day to

08:55 story is called Peter's Denial. Let's pray.

09:13 Jesus was faithfully following the plan of salvation, the plan
09:17 that was created before the foundation of the earth.
09:21 And Jesus went back to Peter, James and John, remember they
09:25 were sleeping again, and we pick up the story in Mark 14. Now we
09:30 know what's coming because I kind of spilled the beans a
09:32 little bit last week, right? Mark 14 says in verses 42 and 43
09:39 Rise, let us be going. See my betrayer is at hand.
09:43 And immediately while He was still speaking, Judas, one of
09:46 the 12, with a great multitude with swords and clubs came from
09:52 the chief priests and the scribes and the elders. Just
09:56 like that immediately it happened. Immediately is one
09:59 of Mark's the writer's favorite words. We notice that in his
10:03 gospel. Now as the crowd came Jesus stepped out in front of
10:06 His disciples as if to shield them and He said something that
10:12 was really important. And we find that in John, we'll be
10:15 flipping back and forth with all the gospels today.
10:18 John 18 verses 4-6: And Jesus therefore knowing all things
10:23 that would come upon Him went forward and said to them, Whom
10:27 are you seeking? And they answered, Well Jesus of Nazareth
10:31 Jesus said to them, I am He. And Judas who betrayed Him also
10:37 stood with them. Now when He said to them, I am He, they drew
10:41 back and they fell to the ground Why would they fall to the
10:45 ground? Right? Well at just that moment the powerful angel who
10:50 had come to comfort Jesus, the one who had taken Satan's place
10:53 in heaven as the angel at the right hand of God passed between
10:57 Jesus and the mob and the brightness of his presence and
11:01 of Jesus made them all faint with fear. They all fell down as
11:05 if dead. And at this point, once again, Jesus could have escaped.
11:09 And yet, verse 7 says, Again He asked them, Who are you seeking?
11:14 And again they said Jesus of Nazareth and He answered I have
11:17 told you, I am He. Therefore if you seek me, let these go their
11:23 way. To the very end, he was looking out for others and for
11:26 His disciples well-being. That the same might be fulfilled
11:30 which He spoke of those whom you gave me, I have lost none. Then
11:37 as was the decided-upon sign Judas did something that's
11:43 absolutely detestable. He said now His betrayer had given them
11:49 a signal saying, Whoever I kiss He is the one. Seize Him and
11:53 lead Him away safely. As soon as he had come, immediately he went
11:56 up to him, um Judas went up to Jesus, We're reading in Mark
12:00 chapter 14 verse 45, he said Rabbi, Rabbi and kissed Him.
12:04 Now that sounds really gross right? But culturally it was
12:08 quite normal in several cultures even that I know of or have
12:13 friends in it's very culturally appropriate when you meet
12:16 someone to do the kiss on the side of the cheek, You know what
12:20 I'm talking about, like kiss, kiss, and that's very normal and
12:23 guys do it, girls do it to everyone. It's just like a hug.
12:28 The same idea when you meet someone. So that was the kind of
12:30 kiss we're talking about. And that was the signal to the crowd
12:35 that this was the one that they were to take. Now Jesus had
12:38 already said, I am He, right? But Judas went through with his
12:43 end of the deal and that was to identify Jesus to the others in
12:48 the crowd. And sure enough that's what happened. And the
12:53 disciples, they were ready to fight. In fact, Matthew says
12:56 he tells the next part of the story, Matthew 26 verse 52:
13:04 26:52, here we go. But Jesus said to them...Oh. And suddenly
13:10 those who were with Jesus stretched out his hand and drew
13:13 his sword and struck the servant of the high priest and cut off
13:15 his ear. Do you know who that was? Maybe you know your Bible
13:20 trivia. It was Peter. Peter reached out and struck off the
13:23 servant's ear. The servant's name was Malcus and Peter cut
13:28 off his ear. But Jesus said to him, Put your sword in it's
13:31 place for all those who live by the sword, oh I'm sorry, for all
13:36 who take the sword will perish by the sword. Or do you not
13:39 think that I cannot now pray to my Father and He will provide me
13:42 with more than 12 legions of angels? How then could the
13:45 scriptures be fulfilled that it must happen thus. Wow! What did
13:53 Jesus do? Dr. Luke tells us what Jesus did in the situation.
13:58 As Malchus is there stunned with his ear probably in his hand or
14:01 on the ground, I don't know where it was. Maybe one of the
14:03 other people picked it up and gave it to him. I'm not sure.
14:06 Peter had cut it clear off. Luke 22 verse 51 says: And Jesus
14:11 answered them and said Permit even this, so He asked them
14:16 please let go of me for a second right? And He touched his ear
14:19 and healed him. Wow! Then Jesus said to the chief priests,
14:24 captains of the temple and the elders who had come to him, Have
14:27 you come out as against a robber with swords and clubs when I was
14:30 with you daily in the temple and you did not seize me. But this
14:33 is your hour and the power of darkness. At this time Peter
14:39 suggested that maybe they ought to all run away and so they
14:42 didn't get in trouble as well. And they did. They wondered why
14:48 Jesus would allow this to happen and with that, they deserted
14:51 their master just as the prophecy had said. In Mark 14
14:57 verse 50 do you remember what Jesus had said about that, that
15:01 they would all leave Him. Mark 14 verse 50 says: Then they all
15:09 forsook Him and fled. He was alone. First, the crowd took Him
15:15 to Annas and he was the former high priest. He wasn't the
15:19 current high priest. His son-in- law Caiaphas was the present high
15:22 priest. But they had this plan. Annas was to say that Jesus was
15:25 the Son of God and the Jewish council, he was to get Jesus to
15:31 say I'm the Son of God, right? Then in the Jewish council of
15:34 course that was worthy of death. Because that was blasphemy to
15:37 this claim that you were the Son of God. And then they hoped
15:41 also to prove that Jesus was here to start a new kingdom
15:42 which would get the Romans involved because they would not
15:45 want a new kingdom or anyone challenging the Roman empire,
15:50 right? And Jesus wasn't talking and this was frustrating Annas
15:56 because he was trying to get Him to admit it, right? And in John
15:59 18 it says, verse 12, Then the detachment of troops and the
16:04 captain and officers of the Jews arrested Jesus and bound Him.
16:07 They led Him away to Annas first for he was the father-in-law of
16:10 Caiaphas who was the high priest that year. It was Caiaphas who
16:14 had advised the Jews that it would be expedient that one man
16:18 should die for the people. So they had this whole plan. Their
16:22 whole family was in on it weren't they? And in verse 19
16:25 it says, The high priest then asked Jesus about His disciples
16:29 and His doctrine. I Jesus said to him, I spoke openly to the
16:33 world. I always taught in the synagogue and in the temple
16:36 where the Jews always meet and in secret, I have said nothing.
16:40 Why do you ask me? Ask those who have heard me and what I
16:45 said. Indeed they know. Right? They were trying to trick Him.
16:48 And then He said these things. One of the officers who stood
16:51 by struck Jesus with the palm of his hand saying, Do you answer
16:54 the high priest like that? And Jesus answered him If I have
16:57 spoken evil, bear witness of the evil, but if well, why do you
17:00 strike me? Then Annas sent Him bound to Caiaphas the high
17:05 priest.
17:07 And he knew that what Jesus had said was true. He couldn't argue
17:10 with that and he knew that if they started this trial at night
17:14 time, they were breaking their own rules. So he decided to
17:17 push Him on to Caiaphas the high priest. Annas thought followed
17:21 along. And the council members soon arrived and the trial began
17:25 They paid witnesses to lie about Jesus. Can you imagine? But when
17:30 you're telling a lie, when you're telling the truth your
17:33 stories should match, right? But the lies started to lead to
17:36 confusion because one person said one thing, one person's
17:38 story didn't match that and it wasn't making much sense. The
17:42 Sanhedrin, or the Jewish court, that were trying Jesus were
17:45 trying Jesus were starting to get a little frustrated because
17:48 it wasn't going as well as they would have liked, right? And
17:51 Jesus was quiet, didn't say anything. In Matthew 26 verse 63
17:56 it says: 26:63- But Jesus kept silent and the high priest
18:01 answered and said to him. I put you under oath by the Living God
18:05 Tell us if you are the Christ the Son of God. He wanted Him to
18:09 have to answer the question, right? And Jesus said to him,
18:11 It is as you said. Nevertheless I say to you hereafter you will
18:15 see the Son of Man sitting at the right hand of Power and
18:18 coming in the clouds of heaven. Huhh! Caiaphas was terrified. He
18:23 saw the judgment day before his eyes. He knew that Jesus would
18:27 be the one who was judging him and he feigned shock, huhhh, he
18:31 acted surprised even though he wasn't and he tore His priestly
18:34 garments, his symbolic garments that had so many messages that
18:38 pointed to Jesus sewn into them. He tore them in disdain.
18:43 And verse 65 says, tore his clothes saying, you have spoken
18:47 blasphemy. What further need have we of witnesses. Look now,
18:50 you have heard His blasphemy. What do you think? And they
18:52 answered and said, He is deserving of death. Their plan
18:56 was going right like they wanted it to. Now they couldn't judge
19:04 at night, that was the rule, and so they were going to convene in
19:06 the daylight and in the meantime they took Jesus to the guard
19:09 room and did despicable things to Him. They struck Him and used
19:13 a whip and whipped Him and treated Him horribly. Peter and
19:17 John had come back after they'd all run away in the garden. John
19:21 was actually known to be a disciple of Jesus. He was pretty
19:24 well known and they allowed him to watch hoping that he would
19:27 change his mind and back them I suppose. Peter waited in the
19:30 courtyard by the fire trying to blend in with everyone else and
19:33 not be noticed. But three different people called him out.
19:38 Three different people, first a servant girl called him out. In
19:42 Mark 14 it talks about the servant girl, 14 verse 66 says
19:47 Now Peter was below in the courtyard and one of the
19:50 servant girls of the high priest came and when she saw Peter
19:52 warming himself she looked at him and said, You also were with
19:55 Jesus of Nazareth. But he denied it saying, I neither know nor
20:00 understand what you're saying. And he went out on the porch and
20:03 a rooster crowed one time. Another person saw him. In
20:09 Matthew chapter 26 verse 71 it says, And when he had gone out
20:14 the gateway another girl saw him and said to those who were with
20:18 him, This fellow is with Jesus of Nazareth. But again he denied
20:22 with an oath, that means he swore, I do not know the man.
20:26 Wow! And finally a relative of Malcus, interestingly enough,
20:31 the one who had gotten his ear chopped off, also said to Peter,
20:35 in John 18, let's look that up quickly, John 18 verse 26 it
20:42 says, One of the servants of the high priest, a relative of him
20:46 whose ear Peter had cut off said Did I not see you in the garden
20:49 with Him and Peter denied it again and immediately the
20:52 rooster crowed the second time. Two times. At that point the
20:58 trial kind of paused and Jesus looked directly at Peter, not
21:02 with an I-told-you-so look but with a look of sorrow, pity,
21:07 compassion and forgiveness. At that point, Peter fled to
21:12 Gethsemane. He ran away as fast as he could. He had let the
