00:38 that made him sad and made Jesus sad. But what did he do after he
00:42 do after he made that. Does he go and he prayed and he asked
00:46 God to forgive him? And did God forgive him? Of course, He did.
00:50 But today we have another sad story about another person who
00:54 made a choice they shouldn't have made. And this one doesn't
00:57 end quite as happy. So listen closely because we can always
01:02 learn from stories of others and not make those same mistakes,

05:07 My name is Eugene and I'm going to spend some time with you
05:09 going over the first chapter of Steps to Christ. God's Love for
05:14 Man. So what it says here in the book is that God has found
05:19 several different ways to tell us about His love. It's when we
05:23 see God's love that our hearts are softened. Titus 3 verse 3
05:40 We were evil. Then we saw God's love and when we saw it it
05:44 changed us. There are three ways that God shows His love to us.
05:48 Why the first one is all around me; it's nature. It's by the way
05:52 this nature was designed to meet the happiness not only of me but
05:56 the happiness of the deer and the squirrels and of the various
05:59 woodpeckers that I see here, the Downey and the Hoary. God has
06:04 designed nature in a way that just satisfies us. He opens His
06:09 hand and satisfies the desires of every living thing. We see it
06:13 also in the Holy Bible. We read in Jeremiah that I have loved
06:17 you with an everlasting love, therefore, with loving-kindness
06:20 have I drawn you? We see that God describes His love in how He
06:24 spared His people and what He's done. So the Bible is the second
06:29 place. But you know the third place, the one we read the most
06:32 of in this chapter, is about Jesus. The fact is that love is
06:38 an idea that's harder to describe than it is to see.
06:43 And Jesus came here to earth to make sure we could see it. That
06:49 we see Him sharing the gospel with the poor and see Him
06:53 forgiving His enemies and see Him becoming like us, humbling
06:58 Himself to be a man. All of those things are revealed here
07:02 in ways that are designed to capture us. At about the fifth
07:08 paragraph it says...
07:27 I was sharing the thoughts of this chapter with some young
07:30 friends of mine this week and they suggested to me a few ideas
07:34 One of them, they said, is the fact that Jesus was the only one
07:38 one that could pay for our sins. Have you thought about that?
07:42 That Jesus is the one that chose to give me life so I could pay
07:49 for my own sin because I was rebellious, or He could pay for
07:53 my sin because He was loving. Because He was creative and gave
07:57 me freedom. And as Jesus was our only creator He's the only one that
08:02 could pay for the sins of his creation. I asked them what else
08:06 They said they were really impressed with the idea
08:08 that there's no simile for God's love. It's too big for us to
08:12 comprehend. And by this idea especially that the Father loved
08:17 us so much that He missed being with us. He didn't want to be in
08:21 heaven without us. And so He sent Jesus. Why this chapter is
08:26 full of evidence about the great love of the Father. I just

08:48 Dear heavenly Father, we thank you and praise you for another
08:50 day of life. We ask that you please be here with us today.

08:56 word and we learn about one of the darkest days in history that
09:00 brought on the brightest sunrise We thank you. In your name we
09:03 pray, Amen.
09:05 Well, you may have guessed because we've been learning
09:08 about the last week in the life of Jesus that we're nearing the
09:12 close of the week and many of you probably have prior
09:15 knowledge about why the whole universe was watching that
09:19 Friday. Jesus knew they were watching too. The physical
09:23 suffering that Jesus knew He was going to experience very soon
09:26 was going to be horrific but He knew it was going to be nothing
09:30 in comparison to the spiritual and emotional suffering that He
09:34 would experience so soon. Remember when the angels came to
09:39 visit Jesus in the Garden of Gethsemane. Because they came He
09:45 survived. He probably would have actually died because of the
09:49 separation that He felt there in the garden and if they hadn't
09:52 given Him the extra strength that He may not have made it
09:55 through that terrible, terrible trying time. And He felt the
10:01 weight. Have you ever lifted weights before? Maybe your mom
10:04 or dad or aunt or uncle or grandma or grandpa like to lift
10:07 weights at the gym. Have you ever tried to lift a weight
10:10 before? It's really heavy, right and you can even get heavier
10:12 ones too; all different sizes.
10:14 But Jesus's weight was like nothing you could lift at the
10:19 gym, nothing that your strongest uncle could bench press. This
10:23 weight was the weight of all the sins of anyone who had ever
10:27 lived or ever would live. Wow! That's a lot of sin. And He felt
10:32 the separation because when we sin, when we go against what
10:35 God's law of love has for us then it creates separation
10:39 between us and God and so He felt completely separated from
10:43 His heavenly Father. How horrible that must have felt for
10:47 Him. He was to die our death. In fact in Romans 6 verse 23
10:52 it tells us what we earn because of sin. It says: The wages (what
10:57 you earn because) of sin, that's death. But the good news is, the
11:02 gift of God is eternal life in who? Christ Jesus our Lord.
11:06 No one understood. Jesus was completely alone and if you feel
11:13 alone sometimes Jesus can relate because He felt the most alone
11:16 of anyone who's ever lived. What love He had for us and has for
11:20 us that He was willing to go through that. Wow. Now it's
11:26 early Friday morning and Jesus was bound and He stood before
11:28 the Sanhedrin Council. You may remember we left off here last
11:32 week. The Sanhedrin was the Jewish council, all the
11:34 important Jewish rulers and leaders of the church. John was
11:38 still there waiting but Peter remember had run away. Do you
11:42 where he was now? After the rooster had crowed, he went to
11:44 the garden of Gethsemane and he was there crying because he felt
11:48 so bad for what he had done to Jesus. Judas was actually there
11:52 too, in the Sanhedrin, in the Council area. And he was
11:57 watching. He had his 30 silver coins that they had given him
12:01 and he thought Jesus surely would soon free himself. He was
12:06 surprised actually that Jesus had let them take Him out of the
12:10 garden. But he soon realized too late he had sold Jesus for the
12:16 price of a slave. The trial was ending and Judas was realizing
12:21 that Jesus wasn't stepping in. He wasn't doing anything. This
12:24 made no sense. This was not his plan. Jesus was not going with
12:29 his plan. And at that point Judas ran in front of the
12:33 council and he said, Don't kill Him, I have betrayed an innocent
12:37 man. And he took the coins that they had given him and he threw
12:40 them down on the floor right there in front of the council.
12:44 Now you can imagine that they were very embarrassed by this.
12:48 In fact, he even grabbed Caiaphas's robe which we
12:52 wouldn't think would be a great idea, right? And they were
12:57 exposed. Everyone there understood what had happened.
12:59 They could see right through it. They knew where Judas had gotten
13:02 that money. And Judas fell at Jesus's feet and he wanted Him
13:08 to save yourself, save yourself. He was still not sorry. He still
13:11 wanted his plan to work. He wanted to force Jesus into an
13:14 earthly kingdom and into an earthly kingship. But it was too
13:19 late. In fact, let's jump over to Matthew 27 and jump right
13:24 into our story here in the word. Matthew 27 verses 3 and 4 say:
13:31 Then Jesus's betrayer, seeing that He had been condemned was
13:35 remorseful and brought back the 30 pieces of silver and saying I
13:39 have sinned by betraying innocent blood. What is this to
13:42 us? You see to it. That's what they said. They said what is
13:47 this to us? They tried to act like they didn't know what was
13:48 happening, right? He threw down the silver and he departed the
13:52 temple. And this is the really sad part of this story. He felt
13:55 so hopeless and so sad at that point that he went and he hanged
13:59 himself. Isn't that a sad end to Judas? He had such a
14:02 promising start. How Judas? He had so many talents. He was good
14:08 looking, he was smart and in fact he thought he was better
14:12 than the other disciples. But his downfall was something that
14:17 can get us even today folks. It was something that can get us
14:21 today. Money! Now money is not necessarily bad in and of itself
14:28 Money can do some really great things for Jesus. But the love
14:32 of money. When we love money more than we love Jesus and more
14:36 than we love others, that's the problem and the love of money is
14:40 what got Judas into big trouble. Judas had actually made the
14:46 other disciples doubt Jesus as well. And Jesus knew about what
14:50 Judas was up to. And yet He still gave him chance after
14:53 chance to change. Well the council had come down with a
14:59 verdict and, you guessed it, Jesus was found guilty. And the
15:03 people's reaction, this is crazy I couldn't believe how the
15:07 people reacted. But you can just imagine that Satan had filled
15:10 them with evil because they shouted, they yelled and it even
15:14 says that they acted...behaved like wild animals. Can you
15:18 imagine? And the priests joined in on this ruckus. It wasn't
15:21 just the common people, it was the priests as well. They had
15:24 gotten their way and they were feeling good. Ho! The soldiers
15:28 actually had to stop the Jews from killing Jesus. The problem
15:34 was though the Sanhedrin Council they didn't have the political
15:37 power to actually put someone to death. They didn't have that
15:41 power and so the next stop they had to go to, they had to take
15:45 Jesus, was before Pilot, the Roman governor. Because he was
15:48 the one who had the power to actually do what they wanted to
15:51 be done to Jesus. And they wanted this to be rushed because
15:55 they didn't want Jesus's followers, He had a lot of
15:57 friends and followers and they didn't want them to find out and
16:00 to try to defend Jesus in any way. So they woke up Pilot early
16:06 and you can imagine, I don't know about you but Miss Michelle
16:08 is not a super duper morning person. I'm not the happiest I
16:12 am all day the first thing I wake up in the morning and Pilot
16:15 was also not thrilled to be woken up early. A little back
16:19 story on Pilot. He was a bad leader. Let's just say it how it
16:24 is. He killed many innocent people and he killed many guilty
16:27 people as well. And it was no big deal for him to condemn
16:31 someone to death. But when he looked at Jesus, Jesus was
16:34 different to him. And Jesus looked innocent. And this kind
16:39 of surprised himself, right? And his wife had actually told him
16:42 about Jesus. And he knew about how He had raised Lazarus from
16:46 the dead and about some of the miracles that He had done and
16:49 this just wasn't making sense to him why these people would want
16:52 Him put to death. Doesn't make sense to us either does it? In
16:56 John 18 we'll see what Pilot was up to here. So let's skip over
17:01 to John 18 verses 28 and 29. It says: Then they led Jesus from
17:06 Caiaphas to the Praetorium. It was early in the morning. But
17:10 they themselves did not go into the Praetorium. This is very
17:13 interesting, lest they should be defiled. Keep that word in mind.
17:17 But that they might eat the Passover. And Pilot went out to
17:21 them and said, What accusation do you bring against this man?
17:25 And to them, this kind of phased them as well. Okay let's first
17:28 go over the word defile, right? Okay, the word defile means to
17:31 to take something that's clean and make it dirty. So
17:34 technically, we defile our plate at supper when we eat from it
17:38 and we get it dirty. But that's not usually the way we use that
17:41 word. The leaders, if they had gone into the Roman court, the
17:44 Roman court, there into the Roman Praetorium, they wouldn't
17:47 have been able to take part in Passover. That was Jewish
17:50 tradition. And so, they wanted to put this man to death, which
17:53 goes against the 10 commandments but they couldn't go into this
17:56 building because...Yeah, that makes no sense, right? That's
17:59 neither here nor there. And so he asked the priests why, like
18:03 what accusations do you have and this kind of phased them because
18:06 before like in the past Pilot hadn't really worried about like
18:09 what was right and what was wrong, what was good, what was
18:12 bad. He just kind of rubber stamped things. Like oh you want
18:14 this guy killed, okay, mm, sounds good. Go for it. But they
18:18 were actually having to stop and think like what reason is he
18:22 going to like for us to put Jesus to death. Oh I just can't
18:26 imagine, right? And so in John 18 verses 30 and 31 it says:
18:32 They answered and said to him, If He were not an evil doer we
18:35 would not have delivered Him to you. Like we wouldn't be here if
18:39 he wasn't bad. Then Pilot said to them, You take Him and judge
18:42 Him according to your law. Therefore the Jews said to him,
18:46 It is not lawful for us to put anyone to death. Pretty much
18:49 saying, We already did this and we can't do what we want to do.
18:53 Wow. Pilot then took Jesus aside to talk to Him because he really
18:57 did think he was innocent and continuing in John 18 it says,
19:02 verse 33: Pilot entered the Praetorium again, called Jesus
19:05 and said to Him, Are you the King of the Jews? And Jesus
19:08 answered him, Are you speaking for yourself about this or did
19:11 the others tell you this concerning me? Pilot answered,
19:14 I'm not a Jew. Your own nation and chief priests have delivered
19:17 you to me. What have you done? And Jesus answered, My kingdom
19:21 is not of this world. If my kingdom were of this world, my
19:25 servants would fight so that I should not be delivered to the
19:27 Jews but now my kingdom is not from here. Pilot therefore said
19:31 to Him, are you a king then? And Jesus said You say rightly that
19:34 I am a king. For this, cause I was born and for this cause I
19:38 have come into the world that I should bear witness to the truth
19:41 Everyone who is of the truth hears my voice. He told Pilot
19:46 straight on, I am the king. And yet Pilot still didn't listen.
19:52 And oh, can't imagine, right? And then it continues and the
19:59 priests mentioned Galilee, that He was from Galilee, right?
20:02 And when the priests said that, Pilot thought, hmm, I know who's
20:10 over in Galilee. Herod, King Herod. And Pilot and King Herod
20:16 apparently didn't get along real well. So he thought, hmm, if I
20:19 send Him over the Herod maybe we could be buddies again and he
20:23 would have a little more respect for me, if I had respect for him
20:26 as a ruler. So that's what he did. He decided to be a coward.
20:31 He decided he wouldn't stand up to the Jewish leaders. He
20:34 wouldn't tell them what he knew was true which was that Jesus
20:38 was the King and that He was innocent and that He shouldn't
20:40 be killed and instead, he sent Jesus on. And in Luke 23 verses
20:47 5-7 it says, But they were the more fierce saying He stirs up
20:51 the people teaching them throughout all Judea beginning
20:54 from Galilee to this place. That was where Pilot heard Galilee
