00:23 Hello boys and girls, welcome to "Starting with Jesus."
00:26 Where we want to encourage you to start everything you do
00:29 with Jesus.
00:31 We have a story today about a young man just like you
00:35 who gave his heart to Jesus.
00:37 And a reminder that it doesn't matter how old you are
00:42 that you can be a missionary for Jesus.
00:47 So, I'm excited about that story. But before we get to that
00:51 story, let's get to some singing.
04:09 Alright guys so we come here to this kind of overlook here
04:14 and there's something really interesting about the stones.
04:16 Can you help me out and tell me how many sides this one has?
04:21 Can you count them with me? One, two, can you count?
04:25 three, four, five, six, okay. Why does it look like someone
04:32 just came up here with a concrete truck or a patio
04:37 and just made this pattern up here?
04:39 How do you think it happened? Now this is cool right?
04:43 But it's easy to walk up here and look around and then just
04:49 keep on walking, right cause you don't really think there is
04:52 much to this other than these rocks with different sides.
04:56 Well, right now we can't really tell. They all have different
05:00 shapes but if all we do is keep on walking
05:03 we're going to miss out on something really cool.
05:06 Let's go!
05:07 So guys, I know it was a little bit of a hike to get down here.
05:32 It took some time didn't it? And I always thought the top
05:35 of these rocks were interesting patterns.
05:37 I want you to look behind me and see something really amazing.
05:40 What do you see?
05:41 Is this what we saw before?
05:45 No, we just saw these little stones under our feet.
05:49 But when we walked down here we saw that those stones
05:52 are actually huge basalt columns.
05:56 It's called Devil's Post piling, why is it called Devil's
05:59 post pile? Yeah, they look like posts, they're in a pile
06:06 but what does the Devil have to do with it?
06:08 Well these were formed when lava cooled and people associate
06:13 lava with who? Satan and hell, that's why it's called
06:18 the Devil's post pile. but these columns range in...
06:22 they average about two feet wide, some of them get as wide
06:26 as three and a half feet wide. And from those little stones
06:32 that we saw under our feet some of them stretched down
06:35 about sixty feet, 60 feet, isn't that amazing?
06:40 and you wouldn't even know that these are huge columns
06:44 if all we had done was just look at the rocks
06:47 that were under our feet.
06:48 In Psalm 92:5 it says "How great are your works O Lord."
06:55 Your thoughts are very deep. You see, there are some things
06:59 that we will never find out about God unless we search
07:02 beneath the surface of the Bible.
07:05 Boys and girls if we will take time to read and study the Bible
07:10 we will discover things that we didn't even know were there.
07:14 do you want to discover something new?
07:16 Start reading your Bible every day.
07:18 ♪♪
07:23 Hmmm! Okay, I need to add that and this, what date was that?
07:30 Oh! Hey everybody, I was just updating my resume.
07:35 Have you heard of a resume before?
07:37 A resume is a list of things that you have accomplished
07:42 in your life, it's also a list of your qualifications.
07:45 Maybe where you went to school or what jobs that you've had
07:49 or what your skills are, or what special trainings
07:51 that you've had and when you are looking for a job
07:53 then you give your resume to someone...
07:56 you print it off and you give it to someone and they decide
07:59 if you're the right person for the job.
08:01 Well today we're going to talk about someone who didn't have
08:05 a crazy resume, but God still used him for a very special job.
08:11 Let's pray.
08:12 Dear Heavenly Father, We thank you and we praise you
08:14 for loving us and for being our God.
08:17 Please send your Holy Spirit to be with us now.
08:19 Thank you so much that your angels are watching over and
08:22 protecting us and that you are always with us.

08:27 In Your name we pray Amen!
08:28 Today's story is called Timothy the Young Missionary.
08:32 Now, when you're a young person maybe just out of college or
08:36 even in high-school, would you have a very long resume?
08:40 No! No you wouldn't. It would be very short
08:44 and that's to be expected but you'll want to do things
08:46 and have different jobs and different experiences
08:49 that will spruce up or make your resume longer and
08:52 more impressive so that you could get a job, right?
08:54 Well, here are some of the things that were on
08:56 Timothy's resume, are you ready?
08:59 He grew up in Lystra, you put your address on the resume.
09:02 His dad was Greek and his mom was Jewish.
09:04 You probably don't put stuff about your parents on your
09:06 resume, but that was his background.
09:08 His mom's name is Eunice and then he also had a
09:11 Grandma Lois. He loved God. You want to put that on your
09:15 resume right? If you were applying to be a missionary.
09:18 And he worshiped on the Sabbath. That would be another thing
09:22 maybe he even helped out in his church...
09:24 Those would be good things to put on your resume
09:25 if you were going to be a missionary, right?
09:27 But he didn't know Jesus yet. So he couldn't put Christian
09:31 on his resume because he didn't know about Jesus yet.
09:34 And he could but I don't participate in Heathen Festivals,
09:39 that was an important part of his resume right?
09:41 What do you think, would you hire Timothy to be a missionary?
09:44 Hmm. Well, it didn't go so well for Mark at first
09:48 but then after a second try he did better.
09:50 Let's find out what happens to Timothy, they want to be
09:54 missionary? Paul and Barnaba's visited Timothy's town
09:58 of Lystra, you may remember of some of the things
10:02 from a previous story that I've told you.
10:04 And they shared with Timothy and his grandma Lois
10:08 and his mom Eunice about Jesus. Now they had already talked
10:12 to Timothy about the Old Testament and to believe and
10:14 to love God but they now knew about Jesus.
10:20 Timothy admired Paul and Barnaba's and maybe he even
10:23 saw them heal that crippled man who had palsy, do you remember
10:27 that? They probably watched the heathen people call them
10:30 gods and try to make sacrifices to them.
10:33 Do you remember that part? Oh my. And he probably saw them
10:41 try to stone Paul to kill him. Did Paul die then,
10:44 do you remember the story? It looks like he was dead but
10:47 he wasn't and Timothy after witnessing all these things
10:51 still was starting to think about being a missionary
10:55 himself. Would those sort of things make you want to be a
10:58 missionary? I don't know but God definitely had placed a call
11:02 in Timothy's life. During Paul's second missionary trip
11:06 Paul and Silas went to Lystra again the Christian were still
11:10 so strong in the city of Lystra, praise God for that.
11:12 Paul checked up on Timothy. He went to his resume maybe,
11:17 not really but he tacked around and he found out that
11:21 he really did love Jesus and that he was really a
11:24 quality young person and he thought hmm, I think maybe
11:29 Timothy should come with us. What do you think Silas?
11:32 And Silas agreed. Paul came to love Timothy like a son
11:37 and Timothy, although he didn't have a super impressive resume
11:42 with a lot of wonderful talents, he had one really important
11:47 thing that we can all have because it's a choice.
11:50 He chose to be like Jesus and you can have that on your resume
11:55 too, right. Tim and Dr. Luke went with Paul and Silas to
12:00 Philippi, do you remember that part? Do you remember them
12:02 in jail singing and counting it all joy even when things
12:05 were going wrong? And next they headed to Thessalonica
12:09 that's where we're going to pick up our story in Acts 17:1.
12:14 Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John, Acts 17 verse 1.
12:23 I hope you have been enjoying these adventures in Acts
12:27 the Apostles, I know I have. Acts 17:1 says
12:32 "Now when they had passed through Anthropoids and Apolonia
12:38 they came to Thessalonica where there was a synagogue
12:42 of the Jews. Then Paul as his custom was what he usually did,
12:47 went in with them and for three Sabbaths he reasoned with them
12:51 from the scriptures...from the Bible.
12:53 Explaining and demonstration that the Christ had to suffer
12:59 and rise again from the dead saying, This Jesus whom I
13:02 preached to you is the Christ.
13:04 And some of them were persuaded and a great multitude
13:09 of devout Greeks and not a few of leading women
13:13 joined Paul and Silas. Praise God. Now, what happened next?
13:20 Do you think that Satan is going to let everything be
13:22 smooth sailing and everything go well?
13:24 No, he always seems to want to mess things up doesn't he?
13:28 Let's see what happens. In verse five it says this.
13:34 But the Jews who were not persuaded became envious
13:38 and they took some of the evil men from the market place
13:41 and gathered a mob and set all the city in an uproar and
13:44 attacked the house of Jason and sought to bring them out
13:48 to the people. Them being Paul and Silas.
13:51 My guess is that Timothy was in there too, he may have been
13:56 a little bit afraid. Who knows?
13:58 But when they did not find them, they dragged Jason and
14:01 some of the brethren to the rulers of the city crying out,
14:03 Those who have turned the world upside down have come here too.
14:07 No, they meant that as an insult didn't they?
14:11 Turning the world upside down? That's impossible due to gravity
14:14 and obviously our human powers don't have that.
14:16 They meant that as an insult... Is that an insult to turn
14:19 the world upside down for Jesus. It's almost like a compliment
14:23 right. Um, let's keep reading. Jason has harbored them
14:28 and these are all acting contrary to the decrees
14:31 of Caesar saying that there is another king Jesus.
14:34 And they troubled the crowd and the rulers of the city
14:38 when they heard these things. So when they had taken security
14:40 from Jason and the rest, they let them go.
14:43 So they did let Jason go eventually.
14:45 Um. Turn the world upside down, they let Jason go.
14:51 What was going to happen to Paul and Silas though, right?
14:54 The new believers decided to send Paul and Silas away
14:59 at night time because they didn't want anything bad to
15:03 happen to Paul and Silas. Where did they go?
15:06 Then the brethren immediately sent Paul and Silas away
15:09 at night to Berea. When they arrived, they went to the
15:13 Synagogue of the Jews. Isn't that interesting?
15:15 Every time that they went they went to the Synagogue.
15:17 Now did they mysteriously believe things that were
15:21 happening in the Synagogue? No, but they wanted to go to
15:24 church, they wanted to go to church and that was pretty cool
15:27 that they went to the Synagogue and every Sabbath
15:32 that was their custom.
15:33 I love going to church on Sabbath, don't you?
15:35 It's a lot of fun. Now, if you haven't gone to church before
15:38 look up on Google the nearest church closest to you and
15:42 I want to encourage you to check it out.
15:43 They have a lot of super fun things that you can do during
15:47 Sabbath School and then during church service there's songs
15:50 and stories and you can learn more about God so I want to
15:54 encourage you to check out your local church.
15:56 Now, when they got to Berea though, they noticed something
16:00 different about the people in Berea let's read what that was.
16:04 These were more fair-minded than those in Thessalonica
16:08 in that, they received the word with all readiness and searched
16:11 the scriptures daily to find out whether, these things were so.
16:14 In Thessalonica and other places people just read the scriptures
16:18 it's like la-de-da-de da... Yeah, I've heard that before
16:21 But the Bereans, they really studied the scriptures and
16:26 they searched them and they tried to find out if these
16:29 things were so. The Bereans set a great example for us
16:33 didn't they? Does it say that they searched them once-in-
16:35 awhile? Daily. Hmm! Do we search our scriptures
16:39 daily? That's a good question even for Ms. Michele
16:42 to remember to daily get into the word of God and search
16:46 it to find the truth right.
16:49 Therefore many of them believed also not a few of the Greeks
16:53 prominent women as well as men praised God.
16:57 And they didn't believe just because somebody else said so
17:00 They believed because they actually learned it for
17:04 themselves. That's important isn't it?
17:07 As you get older and older you're going to need to
17:11 search the scriptures and know for yourself,
17:14 not just cause mom and dad or grandma and grandpa,
17:16 or auntie or uncle believe it, you need to learn it
17:20 for yourself and believe it for yourself cause that is
17:23 most important thing. That's a personal relationship with
17:26 Jesus, we can't just rely on mom and dad to keep us
17:30 close to Jesus, we need to do our part and He will help us
17:35 to learn more about Him through His word.
17:37 Then, but then when the Jews from Thessalonica learned that
17:42 the Word of God had been preached in Berea
17:45 they came there also and stirred up the crowds,
17:46 they just couldn't leave well enough alone.
17:49 Then immediately the brethren sent Paul away to go to the sea
17:54 but both Silas and Timothy remained in Berea.
17:57 So those who conducted Paul brought him to Athens
18:02 and receiving a command for Silas and Timothy to come to him
18:06 with all speed they departed. So they got Paul away quickly
18:10 and then later he sent back for who? Timothy and Silas
18:17 to join him. And Paul went to Athens with some of the new
18:22 believers. Isn't it amazing how God always takes care of Paul?
18:27 There are so many more adventure stories to come and we have
18:30 heard so many adventure stories of how Paul has faced death
18:34 has faced horrible situations and yet God has
18:38 pulled him through. Can you think of some examples in your
