00:07 Mending broken people 00:12 I want to spend my life 00:18 Removing pain 00:23 Lord, let my words 00:30 Heal a heart that hurts 00:34 I want to spend my life 00:40 Mending broken people 00:45 I want to spend my life 00:51 Mending broken people. 01:07 Hello and welcome 01:08 to our 3ABN today cooking program. 01:11 We are the Micheff Sisters. 01:14 I'm Linda. I'm Brenda. 01:15 And I'm Cinda. And I'm Mom. 01:17 Yes, she is. 01:19 And we're so excited 01:21 to have our very own mother with us today, 01:24 because we have a very special program for you. 01:26 That's right, we do. It's called celebrating mother. 01:30 And what better way to celebrate 01:32 than with our own mother here with us today 01:34 on this cooking program. 01:35 Mom, thank you so much for coming. 01:37 And one thing that, 01:39 can I share with them a little bit 01:40 about your personality, 01:42 how much you love to be out in the limelight? 01:46 It's Mom's personality to be behind the scenes, 01:49 so she tells us 01:50 that she is really out of her comfort zone. 01:52 Is that true, Mom? Big time. 01:54 Big time. 01:55 Well, you know, our dad's a pastor 01:57 and for many years we always said, 02:00 Mom always made Daddy look good, 02:01 'cause she was always behind the scenes 02:03 making sure everything run smoothly. 02:05 And that you kept everybody else 02:07 looking great on, 02:09 but she stays in the background. 02:10 If dad's up in the platform and make an announcements 02:13 and he forgot something, 02:14 Mom would be down there telling him what to do 02:16 or slip him a note with somebody else 02:17 would slip over up to him. 02:19 She made sure that he knew 02:20 but she wasn't running up there to do it, 02:24 isn't that right, sisters? 02:25 Although I will say something, because I remember 02:30 I couldn't wait for Sabbath morning 02:35 when Mom would sing for church, 02:37 and she often sings solos in church. 02:40 That's right. And I love to hear Mom sing. 02:43 I sat there and I was just, I just loved it, and... 02:47 That was the only time that she did 02:50 but the reason was is 'cause it wasn't for her glory, 02:53 she was praising Jesus, 02:54 and she will get up and praise Jesus. 02:56 Isn't that right, Mom? I did. 03:00 Well, today we have like we said, 03:02 we're gonna be celebrating mothers 03:04 and we were thinking about what that would be like, 03:07 how many times for mother's day 03:08 especially the kids want to fix Mom breakfast, 03:12 and many times the father 03:14 is not usually the one in the kitchen a lot of times, 03:17 and so the kids and the breakfast 03:19 is we wanted to do something that was really simple, 03:22 that dad and with his children, that's right. 03:26 That dad could do or if you've got a dad 03:28 that there is not even any children 03:30 and he's got a, you know in the house still, 03:31 may be there is, you know, the kids are grown and away 03:34 and the dad's going well, 03:35 I still wanted to set, you know, 03:36 good for, you know, the mother of my children. 03:39 And guess what? 03:40 If you don't know how to cook the recipes 03:42 and what we're gonna show you today 03:44 it's gonna be so easy, 03:45 you can do it anyone can do it, right? 03:47 And some dad's, you do like to cook. 03:49 That's right. 03:51 And so this is just another idea for you. 03:53 That's right, in fact I have the most awesome son-in-law, 03:56 his name is Jim, and I love him with all my heart, 03:58 I don't call him son-in-law, in fact I call him son, 04:01 he is the son in my heart, and he adores my daughter, 04:04 so what mother isn't gonna love her son 04:07 that adores her daughter, you know, 04:08 and he is so good to her and he is an awesome cook. 04:12 Yeah, he loves to cook. He loves to cook. 04:15 In fact he does most of the cooking in their home. 04:18 And he loves to cook and he's a great chef. 04:19 Cinda's husband makes a lot of the food too... 04:23 My husband loves to cook. He loves to cook. 04:25 I wouldn't say he makes a lot of the food, 04:27 I think Cinda is the primary chef in her home. 04:29 Yeah, I'm coming, yeah. 04:30 Well, when I know... But he's capable. 04:32 That's right, when we were taping Tiny Tots, 04:34 he would make up his famous oatmeal 04:38 and it had all kinds of fruit and stuff in it, dried fruit, 04:41 and we would just have to heat it up in the morning, 04:43 it was delicious. 04:45 I know. 04:46 So today, let's just take a look 04:48 and show you what we're going to prepare today. 04:51 We're going to start of with my Waffle Hash Browns, 04:54 and you will not believe how easy this is to make, 04:59 and it's delicious. 05:01 We also have... 05:02 And then we have the Garden Frittata Tarts, 05:05 and you know you will not even miss the egg in these, 05:09 they are delicious. 05:11 I agree, sis. 05:12 Then we're going to have Fruit Cake Waffles. 05:15 And those are delicious too. Yes. 05:17 So the recipes today are, you know, very simple, 05:21 very easy to make, 05:23 and you aren't going to have trouble with them at all. 05:26 We're going to start off with my hash brown waffles, 05:29 so I hesitate to even put a recipe up there 05:31 for you guys to even read 05:33 because there is literally about three ingredients. 05:36 But anyway I'll read the recipe for you. 05:39 For this you will need: 05:47 That's it? Yep, folks, that's it. 05:49 That's going to be pretty hard to remember. 05:51 Now if you say you can't fix, you know, these... 05:55 Potato... 05:57 Waffle hash browns, yeah. Yes. 05:59 I mean you can make these things, 06:00 they're so easy. 06:02 So we're going to just, 06:03 I'm going to show you how easy that is. 06:04 We already have a hot waffle iron right here. 06:07 It's hot. It's hot and it's ready. 06:09 So we want that 06:10 and we also need some nonstick cooking spray 06:13 which is right down here, 06:15 so we will put that over here, sis. 06:17 All right, Mom, you don't get out of these, 06:21 so you get to get in on this too. 06:24 So this is kind of a take our grandma Micheff 06:27 would make us potato pancakes all the time. 06:30 And so that I just love her potato pancakes 06:34 and every one of us did. 06:36 So, and I didn't say they were healthy for us, 06:38 we just love them because they were fried to the hilt. 06:41 And so this is kind of a twist on grandma's potato pancake 06:45 so as the batter's weigh similar 06:47 except that she used eggs, 06:48 and we did not use eggs in these recipe, 06:50 'cause cornstarch is a great, 06:54 it's a great replacement for eggs 06:56 and so that's what I put in place. 06:57 And you don't really notice the difference at all. 07:00 So Mom, I'm just going to have you 07:04 take off the ends of these potatoes, 07:05 it's already been, we don't take the skins off. 07:09 And just quarter them, 07:11 because only reason I'm quartering 07:12 and you probably don't have to, 07:14 but in this particular food processor that we have, 07:19 it has a small round opening that it's not see it, 07:22 it has to go through there and this is not removable, 07:25 I would love to remove it, but it does not, 07:27 so that's just what we have to work with, 07:30 so if your's removed you don't have to do this, 07:32 you can just put the whole potato 07:34 and then that's mine is at home, 07:36 I don't have to do this, 07:37 I can just put the whole potato in 07:38 and you you're going to use, 07:40 so in your food process you're going to use your blade 07:43 that has the shredder on it. 07:45 And this is the two part process, 07:47 so you're going to use the blade first, 07:49 so first we're going to shred them 07:51 and that's what you would normally have 07:52 for regular hash browns. 07:55 And then we'll take and remove that, 07:58 I can't process it all in this particular processor, 08:00 so we'll do it in two batches then we'll put it in here, 08:03 and then after the shredding 08:05 then we're going to switch blades 08:07 and we're going to put it in this with this and it does, 08:10 it kind of just pulses it. 08:12 And it make that alone makes our batter. 08:16 So that's what we're going to do 08:17 so once we do that we'll add our salt and cornstarch, 08:19 and then they're ready to... 08:20 And if you don't have this, 08:22 our grandma ever had was a little hand grader. 08:24 That's right. And she grated it by hand. 08:26 And if you use the grater by hand, 08:29 don't use the one the shredder, 08:31 don't use the shredder side of it. 08:33 There is one that looks like 08:35 real tiny little holes everywhere 08:36 that just pulverizes it like that's the one you use, 08:40 and it takes a lot more, you know, energy... 08:43 Muscle. Muscle to do that. 08:46 You watch your knuckles. Like grandma did it. 08:47 And did you hear Mom what just said? 08:48 What did you say, mom? Watch your knuckles. 08:51 Yes, because that grater, 08:52 I've more than once lost a little bit of my, 08:56 you know, knuckles on that, so you want to be careful. 08:57 You are supposed to be vegetarian. 08:59 Grandma really was quite good at it 09:01 and she didn't like... 09:04 What did she call them? I never saw grandma. 09:05 Playing little things that she didn't like that. 09:08 She didn't like extra kitchen appliances. 09:10 No. 09:11 And you're kind of like grandma in that area, you tend to... 09:13 Little bit. Yeah. 09:15 You tend to of all three of us, 09:16 I think she is the most like grandma 09:18 in terms of she likes the old fashioned way to do it. 09:21 Not you and I, we... 09:22 Yeah, oh, yeah. 09:24 If it's a gadget we want to try. 09:25 I do too. 09:26 I love, in fact we have, 09:28 my sisters and I have a close friend 09:30 and I'm thinking you know, 09:32 we're thinking of Bonnie Layne of Idaho 09:34 and she is the gadget queen out there. 09:37 And she gives us the neatest gifts 09:40 we'll show it as little kitchen gadgets. 09:42 Gadgets you've never seen or heard of. 09:44 And we're like, wow, 09:45 we never heard of that, love it. 09:47 So thank you Bonnie for all of those gadgets. 09:49 She is just a sweetheart though. 09:50 Oh, although we really call her Benda. 09:53 Yes, we do because it's Linda, Brenda, Cinda, 09:56 and Benda. 09:58 We called her, we have an extra sister. 10:01 Honorary sister. 10:02 Yeah, she is our honorary sister, so. 10:04 All right, so, now if you don't want 10:06 to plug your ears with this, 10:07 we're going to put this contraption on, 10:10 and I don't know where the plunger is 10:12 for this thing, so I'm using extra potato to plunge it, 10:15 so do as I say and not as I do in this one. 10:21 So here we go, we're going to tune this on. 10:23 And Linda, we're just going to 10:25 keep putting those out in there. 10:29 And you can see that it's grating like a shredded. 10:33 Oops. 10:35 Well, just little bit. I know. 10:37 Give me a thicker one. Okay. 10:42 Here we go. 10:43 Hey, sometimes 10:44 you just got to make do with what you've got. 10:46 And you know what? 10:47 We didn't have a lot 10:49 when we're growing up and Momma always... 10:50 We used to make and do. 10:52 Momma, what did you do always tell us? 10:54 Work with what you've got. That's right. 10:56 If you don't have what the recipe calls for, 11:00 then you look around and go. 11:03 Figure out a way to use it. And figure out a way. 11:05 But, Mom, you don't need me in there, 11:06 you just go right ahead and help right over there 11:08 and help her out there. 11:12 Now normally I'm always doing that to Cinda but you know, 11:14 Mom is here today, so you know. 11:15 Yeah. 11:17 Mom is going to taught us how to do everything. 11:19 Thanks, Mom. 11:21 We'll give you these, Sis, we don't need those. 11:25 And those are almost done, 11:28 you can see how they're just shredding, 11:30 it does go just it there is another contraption, 11:34 a kitchen gadgets that we have, it's called, 11:36 what is that, Mom, the king? 11:38 A king cutter and it doesn't require electricity 11:41 and that's what I use all the time. 11:43 Yeah, you can... 11:44 They're hard to find out. 11:46 I haven't seen them in a store 11:47 but you can get them on the internet, 11:48 it's called king cutter 11:50 and they have different round blades 11:51 and you turn it with the handle 11:53 and they have everything you needed, 11:55 that's actually my favorite 11:56 and so I actually have one of those too, 11:59 so let's see if we can. 12:01 Use your hand and use the other end. 12:02 All right, there you go. 12:06 Okay. All right. Oh. 12:08 Well, we didn't want to do that. 12:09 I screwed up. 12:10 Yep, so let's see how we got in there. 12:12 Up, up here it is. 12:13 Okay, well, saved by the day. 12:15 Here it is. 12:16 All right, so now let's take it out of here, 12:18 so this is why you really do want to have one 12:21 that has the plunger and the safety on it, okay, 12:24 so and it didn't make it in the pot here, 12:27 so we're good. 12:28 All right, so we're going to just put this out here now 12:32 and now this blade that I told you about, 12:35 we're going to put this in here and put this back in here. 12:41 Let see, okay. 12:43 And the reason I have to take that out 12:45 to put the blade in 12:46 because it won't fit down nicely if I don't. 12:49 And so I'm just going to take half of this out 12:51 and put in here. 12:52 Oops, Mom, don't look at that, I dropped some. 12:54 And don't worry 12:55 that your potatoes are getting another color, 12:57 because when air hits the potatoes 13:01 that's what happens. 13:02 Mean if you don't want that, 13:04 you could soak them in ice cold water. 13:07 Do I turn it on? 13:08 And that kind of keeps it from turning that color. 13:09 Okay, can I have a paper towel, Sis? 13:11 Sure. Okay. 13:12 I'm just going to pulse this a little. 13:14 If you can watch carefully now and see this, 13:15 I'm going to pulse it until it's not... 13:21 Okay, now I'm going to use, let me have that, oops, 13:26 it came out. 13:28 How about that? Yeah, but this part didn't. 13:30 Yeah, that part didn't. 13:32 I just kind of push it down in tiny bit 13:33 because, well, actually that looks pretty good. 13:36 All right, there is another bowl 13:38 because I'm going to have to do this. 13:39 And if you have a large food processor, 13:42 you don't have to do this in twice. 13:47 This food processor is smaller. 13:48 She is showing you how to do it the hard way. 13:50 Yeah, that's right. 13:53 Well, I'm showing you how to do it 13:55 and make do it with what you have, 13:56 because we don't have an extra large food processor 13:59 here that will work, so we got to do it this way, 14:02 and that's not a problem it still works 14:03 and we make do. 14:05 So now we're going to put the rest of it in 14:07 and this, Sis, can go in the sink. 14:10 Okay. 14:11 Okay, and, Mom, you can... 14:15 Honestly grandma with her little tiny grater 14:18 would had this already done. 14:19 That's right. 14:21 Because grandma just could do it so fast, 14:23 she was just like... 14:25 All right, so I'm just pulsing in a tiny bit. 14:28 And that's it, you can put that in there. 14:31 That's all it takes, and Sis, you can pick this too. 14:37 Get rid of that one. 14:38 All right, and so we're just going to put this in the bowl. 14:44 Yeah, right, if you have the right tools in the kitchen 14:47 to get your job done, 14:48 it would not be this complicated, 14:49 yes, we can get this out of there, 14:52 and let me clean up my. 14:53 Mom, I want you to make a note, I'm cleaning up my mess. 14:56 That was a big thing Momma insisted on 14:59 when we could cook in the kitchen, 15:01 we could make a mess but boy, 15:02 we should had to clean it up, isn't that right? 15:04 That's right. 15:06 But you know something I learned from you, Mom, 15:07 is you cleaned up as you went. 15:10 I did, well, when your dad was younger, 15:13 when I would be cooking, 15:15 and I would set down a pitcher and then thinking, 15:18 and I go to get it again and it would be gone, 15:20 he'd have it washed and in the cupboard already. 15:24 That's team work. 15:26 Okay, so dad helped you clean up in the kitchen. 15:27 Oh, yes, he did. 15:29 Mom, you can put our salt, 15:30 cornstarch in here and mix that up. 15:32 And then when she does that, that is all there is to it, 15:35 the cornstarch is just a little binder 15:37 'cause we're not going to use eggs. 15:38 And Mom is going to... 15:40 Doesn't want to come out. 15:42 Yep, we just get that out there. 15:44 And that's really all it takes is to do that. 15:48 Now at this point 15:49 if you wanted to make pancakes out of it, you could, 15:52 so if you wanted to just make these 15:54 potato pancake right from this jar, 15:57 you just put a little oil in your skillet and fry them, 16:00 and when they're golden you turn it 16:02 and it would be fine. 16:04 Okay, so that's good. All right, now let's see. 16:09 That's good. 16:11 You're ready for this, Sis? Okay, there you go. 16:12 All right, now we're going to open this up 16:14 and I'm going to turn this 16:15 so that you can see it right here. 16:18 All right, so we're going to open this up 16:20 and spray the bottom 16:22 with the nonstick cooking spray, 16:24 and what you're gonna do is take one cup, 16:27 we're gonna put it right in the middle, 16:30 and notice I'm not going to flatten it at all, 16:32 it's just right in the middle. 16:34 We're going to do this and turn it over. 16:37 And let me have a paper towel here, 16:39 we'll wipe the top off, Sis. 16:41 And that's all it's going to just take a couple of minutes 16:44 and it's going to, you'll be surprised 16:46 how well that is... 16:48 I actually would like the plate. 16:50 Mellisa is already on it. 16:51 She went to go get me a plate, but... 16:53 I already gave her the signal. She did. 16:57 She is very efficient. 16:58 She, Mellisa Hoffman is my Kids Network assistant 17:03 and she also is our crew chief 17:06 here for all of our Micheff Sisters cooking shows. 17:08 We really don't know what we do without her, 17:10 so Linda is going to go get the plate for us 17:13 'cause she does like to be on camera, 17:15 but one of these days we might just, you know, 17:17 get to talk her into coming out for mom with us. 17:19 Oh, Christique is standing right there too 17:20 and she is awesome help. 17:22 Yes, yes, we call her CQ 17:24 and she helps us as well and also Kerry, 17:27 and so we thank you for our kitchen help. 17:30 And they're not just help, they're family. 17:32 We thought each one of us 17:33 would want to share a special Mother's Day memory 17:36 and I have so many Mother's Day memories, 17:39 Mom, with you of just trying to make, 17:42 you know, your day special and show you 17:44 how much we mean to you, 17:45 and I know that one thing that we did as sisters 17:48 and even our brothers as well, 17:49 on Mother's Day sometimes we'd ask Dad to, 17:52 you know, take Mom out of the house 17:53 so we go through and you know, 17:55 because we didn't have a lot of money or things 17:57 we could go buy a gift, 17:58 so all of us kids would go through the house 18:01 and we clean out the house, 18:02 we would scrub and clean everything 18:04 so that when Mom would walk through that door, 18:07 we happen to go out and pick some wild flowers 18:09 and put them, have a place at the table for her, 18:11 and we do have flowers for her... 18:13 We did even organized drawers, do you remember that, Mom? 18:16 Well, I do remember that when I look for something 18:19 and I couldn't find it, 18:21 all I have to do is open the drawer 18:22 that was the closest, there it was. 18:27 But, Mom, do you remember what it was like, 18:28 when you would come home and we were so happy that... 18:31 Very surprised, very surprised. 18:34 And now you couldn't have given me anything 18:36 I liked any better. 18:37 Oh, so it meant something to you, 18:39 we did do that for you. It did. It did. 18:40 And one thing that I really loved to, 18:43 Mom didn't criticize us. 18:44 You know, she didn't said 18:46 that if we didn't do something just right, 18:47 if the dish wasn't just right. 18:49 If may be our pancakes weren't, you know, 18:51 just like hers and wasn't perfect. 18:53 They weren't just like hers. They were still good. 18:58 They were good, and Mom wooed and nod over them 19:00 and just made us feel like we had just, you know, 19:03 done the best job ever. 19:04 And that's it, that is the one thing 19:06 I really appreciate about you Mom, 19:09 and I've done that with my own children. 19:11 In fact, I now teach that to the Tiny Tots. 19:15 When they're making something, 19:17 you never said no, it's supposed to be this shape, 19:21 you don't put these two here, 19:23 and you need to do it just this shape, 19:25 and you know what did you do this for? 19:29 You need to be careful and you never did that to us, 19:32 you went, "Oh, it's okay, I love the way you did that, 19:37 now I'm going to may be I have to think about doing that." 19:41 And you, I mean, you always encouraged us. 19:46 Well, what I really liked 19:47 is if didn't get all the ingredients in it 19:50 that I was supposed to Mom, you would just say, 19:53 "Well, I guess we created a new recipe." 19:57 Good job. Proud of you. 20:01 Oh, we're getting that steam over here. 20:03 But that really did make a difference, you know. 20:05 It did. 20:06 One of my favorite memories for me 20:09 is when I became a mother, one of the favorite gifts my, 20:12 I have two daughters Becky and Linda Kay, 20:15 and one Mother's Day they made me a memory box. 20:19 And this was, you know, 20:21 probably about I don't know several years ago, 20:24 and it's probably my favorite Mother's Day present ever. 20:27 They gave me a... 20:28 They found a beautiful box with the lid on it, 20:30 container and it was beautiful 20:32 and when you open it up they're folded up 20:34 with 365 tiny little pieces of paper 20:38 that you had all fold up and I was to open one a day 20:42 and everyday for a year I pulled out 20:45 and I would read a special memory 20:47 that they had for me. 20:48 Mom, I always remember the time that you, 20:51 when I was discouraged and you pick me up at school 20:53 and took me out for lunch and you know, 20:56 another one said, Mom, I really want to tell you 20:58 thank you for when I got my braces on 21:00 and I thought I was so ugly and you celebrated it 21:02 and it made me feel good about myself. 21:04 I mean all those little memories that was just, 21:07 you know, really special to me. 21:09 And look, now, I want them to see this here 21:11 and get it, what it looks like 21:13 and it won't fill out all the edges. 21:16 I found that if I try to mash it down 21:18 then it got too thin and it wasn't as nice, 21:21 but look how you can just pick this right up 21:23 put it on the plate, and it's all the rest to it. 21:27 And you know what we have to go with that? 21:30 My garden frittata tarts, so let me read the recipe. 21:35 For this you will need: 22:14 That sounds good. 22:15 Well, I was trying to think because Mom, 22:18 you've always taught us to have a well rounded meal. 22:22 Right. 22:23 And so I was trying to think of something... 22:24 With colors, everybody notice the colors. 22:27 That's right. 22:29 'Cause you will have good nutrition 22:31 if you have a lot of color at one meal. 22:34 That's right. 22:35 And so, I wanted to have something 22:37 that went with potatoes 22:38 and something that went with waffles 22:41 and so we have garden frittatas. 22:44 And it might sound complicated but the most complicated thing 22:47 is how to say frittatas for sure. 22:53 Okay, so I'll... 22:55 Now if you don't have 22:57 or want to do fresh corn on the cob, 22:59 you don't have to 23:00 but, oh, it just makes it taste so much better, 23:03 so if you can, 23:06 Mom, and we learned this from Mom too. 23:09 We put this, we leave this like this in its husk, 23:14 I just cut off the silk end 23:17 and I cut off the little sticky, 23:21 what, I don't know what they say it? 23:23 The end of it. Yeah. The end of it. 23:24 I don't know what it's called, 23:26 but the end of the corn I cut it off and... 23:30 In the end, put it in the microwave, 23:33 I lay a paper towel down first, put it in the microwave, 23:36 three minutes an ear. 23:38 And I mean in it that's 23:40 and the silk comes right off easy. 23:42 It's perfect. 23:44 I love it because it's not waterlogged to say 23:45 when you break it, 23:47 when you put it on the stove with the water and boil it, 23:49 it's all you lose a lot of that flavor, 23:51 that corn flavor it's all just waterlogged. 23:53 So and... 23:56 Joe and I and I know all of us kids, 23:59 when we want to do corn, we go to Michigan 24:02 because they have incredible corn. 24:04 And mom and dad go right to the farm get it fresh 24:10 and then you help us do it. 24:12 And we have done, 24:14 we have done bushels and bushels of frozen corn. 24:17 Actually no one is better at freezing 24:19 or canning than mom, 24:23 honestly she is the best at preserving food. 24:28 Right, she said... 24:29 What did you always say, Mom? 24:31 Have a garden 24:33 and if you can preserve it yourself. 24:37 That's what you need to do. You don't buy it. 24:39 That's right. 24:40 And that's what we've learned, 24:42 so that's what we do. 24:43 So if you will cut the corn off here. 24:49 Brenda, I'm going to get you busy. 24:52 You know what? 24:53 We probably should have your own cutting board. 24:56 And I'm sure that Mellisa is already on her way 24:58 to go get that for us, and here is how... 25:02 Thank you Mellisa. 25:03 Here is how I want the tomatoes, 25:05 because these are little tiny tarts, 25:07 let's just cut them down in the middle 25:10 and then cut them into pieces like this. 25:13 Depending, you know, 25:15 just so because you're going to want... 25:16 You're just dicing it. 25:17 Just dicing it because you're going to want little... 25:19 I love the flavor of grape tomatoes 25:20 unless you're going to have, you know, the summer tomatoes 25:22 that you have just right from your garden, 25:26 those grape tomatoes just has such a sweet flavor to them. 25:28 Here, Sis. Okay. 25:30 You get going on that... 25:31 I had grape tomatoes growing in my garden. 25:33 Oh, you did? I did. 25:34 Wow, and how were they? They were delicious. 25:36 Sis, can you spray this, and turn it on low 25:40 so it's getting warm. 25:42 And I've already taken a zucchini 25:45 fresh from the garden 25:46 and I've cut it into as you can see little fine pieces, 25:51 and the reason why you're going to want it fine, 25:54 you'll see because our tarts are little, 25:56 and so you want that so. 26:00 Let me get, you guy are all busy, so let me spray this. 26:03 Okay. 26:04 Hey, well, we do our work, right, Mom? 26:06 That's for sure. 26:08 I don't want to use a lot of oil 26:10 and so I'm just spraying that. 26:12 I'm going to add the zucchini 26:14 and add the tomatoes in as you... 26:15 You want it higher? You can just a little bit. 26:19 'Cause this heat doesn't get real high. 26:20 Sure, sure go ahead and... 26:22 Crank her up. Crank her up. 26:23 Okay, I'm cranking her up. 26:25 And add your tomatoes as it's cooking 26:27 because your tomatoes 26:29 are also going to pass some liquid and that helps. 26:33 And another thing really important 26:36 when you're cutting your corn off the cob, 26:40 don't forget to just reach over and taste that, 26:43 and make it look good, okay, and... 26:45 Very important part that she is telling you. 26:47 Oh, you got to tell well if it's cooked or not. 26:50 See where to learned it. 26:54 Do you want this one in too? Yes, ma'am. 26:56 Do you want these tomatoes 26:57 as I'm getting them done in there? 26:58 Yes, ma'am. All right, oh good. 27:00 This really is important, guys. Meanwhile what's next? 27:05 Oh, meanwhile back to the ranch. 27:07 Okay. 27:10 That's really good corn, you want some? 27:11 No, thank you. 27:13 By the way we have so much fun 27:14 when we come here and do cooking programs. 27:16 I wish you all could really see what it's like 27:18 when we're not on camera, when we're not... 27:21 We're cracking up laughing, 27:23 and sometimes so hard we can hardly 27:24 when that we're counted and be ready to talk 27:27 because Cinda keeps us so amused. 27:29 And so if you ever want to come and come to the studio 27:33 and be here while we're recording these programs, 27:36 we love to have you. 27:37 In fact today two very special friends of ours, 27:41 Ron and Linda Fetters are here 27:43 and they were passing through from Florida 27:45 and we're so excited they are with us today. 27:47 So special shout out to Ron and Linda. 27:50 Hi. Shout out. 27:56 They were out on canvassing. 27:58 Okay, we have water packed tofu 28:01 that the water has been drained off of. 28:05 Oh, why don't you take the lid of that first? 28:07 All right. 28:08 And you're going to put this, you can have a blender, 28:11 Vitamix whatever you happen to have 28:13 and pour that in, 28:15 and then let's throw that in trash down there. 28:19 Pour that in now, Sis, put your in your... 28:22 This is unsweetened, make sure, you didn't put it in skillet. 28:25 Make sure it's unsweetened original almond milk 28:29 that's my favorite, 28:31 and if you have a better milk that you want, 28:33 that you use like a soy milk or you can use it, 28:37 just don't use the sweetened milk, 28:39 because this is the savory dish, okay. 28:42 Add your, I love vege-sal, 28:43 it's my favorite all purpose seasoning, 28:47 so I put vege-sal in there 28:48 and I have a turmeric for some color 28:52 and turmeric is very healthy for you, 28:54 so it's good to get that in there. 28:58 Now, and Sis, what you're going to do 29:01 is I want that pureed very well. 29:06 You want to get that really blended up well, okay. 29:08 All right. 29:10 Now, while they're doing that, 29:13 I'm going to take and chiffonade. 29:15 You guys know how to chiffonade your spinach. 29:21 I'm going to take the spinach and what you do. 29:23 That's a pretty fancy word, 29:24 we're making this simple for kids, 29:26 so simplify that. 29:27 No, what? 29:32 May be we better ways to chiffonade. 29:38 See all that turmeric in there. 29:41 We want a nice yellow color. 29:46 Let's get in, you get that turmeric. 29:47 I'm going to work on it. 29:48 I got to take this... 29:50 Okay, so chiffonade what you're going to do 29:52 is put all your spinach here 29:53 and you just kind of roll that up in the best you can. 29:58 This is a job dad is going to do when we were kids. 30:01 Yeah, exactly. 30:02 And then you're just going to... 30:06 Or if grandma is visiting. 30:08 You can't pull her in 30:09 'cause you're going to honor grandma too. 30:11 Oh, that's right. Yeah, I know. 30:13 So, you can let the dads, the grown ups, 30:17 the uncles whoever is there to help you 30:20 but not kids do this. 30:24 And so we're just chiffonading 30:26 it is as just little tiny shreds. 30:29 And then also I go down in the middle again 30:32 since our tarts are little, I go down like this. 30:45 Fine job, Linda, fine job. 30:48 Okay, they're good? You said it was a fine job. 30:52 I don't think I mentioned stop. 30:55 Oh, you want me to keep going? 30:57 Oops, it wasn't done. It looks like good to me. 30:59 Okay. 31:01 All right, so then we're going to add. 31:03 Oh, thanks, Mom. 31:06 And you're going to add well, 31:08 Brenda is still doing the tomatoes. 31:09 Oops. Seriously over there. 31:11 I kind of thought I was done 31:12 and I kind of put them over there, and... 31:16 Also what I do is I will salt this just a little bit 31:20 and I'm sure Mellisa is already on the way getting salt, 31:24 because I like to just salt this just a little bit, 31:27 you don't have to salt it much. 31:29 But just to taste and if people can't add the salt... 31:31 But just to taste. 31:32 If you can't have the salt, you don't have to, 31:35 but I think it brings out the flavor of the vegetables 31:38 just a little bit. 31:39 Look how pretty that's looking. That does look pretty. 31:44 Oh, okay, so Brenda, 31:48 just sprinkle a little bit of salt over it. 31:51 Okay. And Mom can stir it up. 31:53 That's it, you want more? Thanks, Sis. 31:55 You're welcome. 31:57 Okay, now you're going to add your spinach 32:01 and you'll see this shrinks down so fast 32:05 and you don't have to cook this very long. 32:09 Now this part can be made the day ahead of time, 32:13 put in refrigerator 32:14 and then in the morning all you have to do is, 32:18 okay, you can turn it off. 32:20 You just want to make sure that Mom doesn't see 32:22 if it's surprise for Mother's Day. 32:24 So you just make sure you put in the container 32:27 that's you know, put in the back of the fridge. 32:29 While mom's out running errands 32:33 Okay, now we're going to add our filling. 32:38 This is what's going to hold it all together. 32:42 And here, Brenda, you guys can add that. 32:45 Okay, Mom. 32:46 And while you're adding that mix all this up, 32:50 mix all that up really good, 32:51 and I'm going to show you how to put... 32:53 Add it, you mix it, how is that? 32:55 I'm going to show you 32:56 how to put your corn tortillas in the pan. 33:02 So I've taken... 33:04 Now these, we didn't mean to 33:06 but we accidentally got the extra ten tortillas 33:09 and I usually use the regular thickness corn tortillas. 33:13 So these are tear a little bit easier, 33:16 so if your tortillas are the same way what you can do 33:19 is put them in some plastic wrap 33:22 or some wet paper towels or a wet rag, 33:25 just I like clean this rag. 33:27 A clean one. 33:28 I knew you were going to say that. 33:29 I'm surprised, Mom didn't hear me 33:31 and she said that. 33:33 And then what you're going to do we sprayed... 33:36 Now also if, when you spray our pan like this, 33:40 make sure that you take a paper towel 33:43 and wipe. 33:44 See all this extra stuff on the top, 33:47 don't leave that, 33:48 because that will ruin your baking pan, it just kind of, 33:51 it's really hard to ruin, not... 33:54 Well, that actually darkens it, 33:55 and it's actually harder to wash off. 33:58 You can still use it but... It's hard to wash off. 33:59 It's really hard to wash off, so I always do that. 34:04 Okay. Now you're going take this. 34:06 Do you need a spoon or anything to dip it? 34:08 I have it. She has got it right here. 34:10 But thank you. 34:12 I'm going to just kind of ease this down into it 34:16 and everyone seems to turn out differently, 34:19 it depends on how you do it, 34:21 and then you just put it in like this. 34:25 And then you were going to heat 34:27 and oven up to 350 degrees and bake them. 34:34 They usually take about 30 minutes 34:36 and depending even the oven here 34:40 which our ovens here are not great. 34:42 And even our oven's here baked at 30 minutes, 34:45 so but you see how it just kind of curves around 34:49 and there is no right or wrong way to do this. 34:56 So just let the kids have fun with. 34:58 If it doesn't turn out as perfect, 35:02 I'm pretty sure, Mom, 35:03 our stuff didn't turn out perfect and... 35:06 Tasted good. There you go. 35:08 And even if it didn't taste perfect, 35:10 Mom didn't complained. 35:11 That's right, you never did. 35:14 And so do you want to do one? 35:17 Oh, I think you're doing really fine job there. 35:21 I didn't want to impress. 35:22 After they bake and they're crispy, 35:24 Cinda has got some right over here 35:26 that she can show you, 35:27 and she just garnished some with her famous tomato roses, 35:30 it looks so beautiful with that, 35:33 isn't that gorgeous? 35:35 And it's getting ready now to go along with that, 35:38 Linda's fruit cake waffles. 35:41 You want to read the recipe, Sis? 35:42 All right, for that you'll need: 36:15 Now my family loves waffles. 36:18 I do too. I do too. 36:19 Now who doesn't love waffles, seriously? 36:21 Well, I'm not really that crazy. 36:22 Well, clearly you mean waffles pancakes, 36:25 potato pancakes. 36:26 Brenda says my kind of waffle 36:28 because I don't really like the sweet taste, 36:30 I will eat it when I have to. 36:31 She likes my waffle hash browns. 36:33 I like because it's a savory dish, 36:35 I love savory, but I make these waffles 36:38 because my family loves them. 36:40 And today my, our Mom made the sauce for us, 36:44 the fruit sauce and she made raspberry 36:48 which is just beautiful. 36:50 It really is pretty. 36:51 And she has a really unique way of making it, 36:54 and you can put any kind of fruit in it, 36:56 blueberries, you can put strawberries, raspberries, 37:01 and sometimes she makes peach in. 37:02 Mom, look at what she's doing, did you see that? 37:05 Is that good? Mmm! 37:08 Okay, Mom, can you just tell them... 37:09 And give them an idea how you made this, 37:11 we're not actually going to make it 37:13 but I'm going to have her tell you 37:14 because you can make your favorite. 37:17 You just use 12 ounce I think it is 37:21 can of apple juice concentrate, now you can use... 37:24 The frozen? 37:26 In frozen concentrate is what I use, 37:28 but you can make it with regular apple juice 37:33 if you prefer, it just takes a little more thickening 37:37 and you just put a little bit of cornstarch in there and... 37:41 Do you make your cornstarch with cold water 37:43 or something and pour it in. 37:44 Yes, you have to do that or it would lumpy, 37:47 it would be lumpy. 37:48 We don't like lumpy. No. 37:50 I would eat it anyway. 37:52 It's good. She would. 37:55 So don't worry about inviting her over. 37:58 Honestly you did. 38:00 You thicken your juice 38:02 and when it begins to get thick, 38:04 then you put your fruit in there, 38:05 you can use blueberries... 38:07 You cook that apple juice concentrate with... 38:09 We thicken it. 38:11 But you do it on the stove if you cook it. 38:12 Yes. Okay. 38:13 So you put your apple juice 38:15 frozen concentrate on the stove? 38:16 It's not going to thicken 38:17 if you don't put it on the stove. 38:19 Well, I'm just helping you out, Mom, 38:21 because they might not know that, right? 38:24 You tell me that years ago, but they might not know 38:27 that so we got to get a pan, 38:29 you got to put the frozen apple juice in there, 38:31 and you're going to put the cornstarch, 38:34 a little bit cornstarch in water and... 38:36 And you let it thicken. Okay. 38:38 And as soon as it thickens you don't cook it, 38:41 you just let it thicken and then you put your fruit in. 38:44 You can use any fruit you want to strawberries, 38:47 blueberries, peaches. 38:49 Yeah. Raspberries. 38:50 So, Mom, I also notice that you don't stay in there 38:53 and cook your fruit once it's done either, 38:54 you take it right off. 38:56 No. 38:57 So you're just putting the apple juice concentrate 39:00 that's already done and you're just folding your fruit in it, 39:03 then you have luscious looking fruit 39:05 over the top of your waffles. 39:06 And if I don't, and if I wanted to be a more fresh fruit 39:09 rather than cooked fruit flavor 39:11 'cause they can welt the fruit a little bit in the hot, 39:14 I let that mixture cool and then I add my fruit. 39:17 And then I have a cold, you know, topping if you want, 39:20 so you can have a hot topping or cold topping. 39:23 And I'll eat whatever you all make. 39:27 Okay, we're going to start with the waffles. 39:30 We're going to put all the dry ingredients in, 39:33 and now we got the aluminum free baking powder 39:38 and a little bit of salt, 39:41 and we're going to put the walnuts in and almonds, 39:47 and we've got some raisins. 39:48 Look at all great nutrition going in there, Mom. 39:50 Oh, wow. 39:51 And we have some of the dates and raisins. 39:56 All that sweetens it so naturally too. 39:59 See, Mom, you taught us to clean up as we go 40:02 and that's what we're doing. 40:03 Because that way Mom said, when you're all finish, 40:06 you just got to clean working space. 40:08 That's right. 40:10 So we're just, I'm going to stir that all up, 40:11 then I'm going to just kind of make a little 40:13 like well in the middle, 40:15 and I'm going to pour in the milk. 40:19 Which is your almond milk. 40:20 Almond milk or your favorite soy milk at home, 40:22 I use flax milk because it's so white 40:25 and it tastes really good, 40:27 and also because it's the only kind 40:29 my mother-in-law can have it. 40:31 And she loves it so, and she likes it. 40:34 Okay, we're going to have some vanilla 40:37 and we're going to have some pure maple syrup here, 40:41 my husband's absolute favorite. 40:43 I love pure maple syrup. 40:44 And this is fruit sweetened apricot jam, 40:48 so we got a lot of fruit one. 40:49 Apricot any things are favorite of mine. 40:52 Yes, I love apricot too. 40:53 So now we're going to mix this all together 40:57 and our waffle iron is already hot, 41:01 so I'm going to mix this all together. 41:03 David and Catie have a apricot tree. 41:06 They're going to school and they'll share a house 41:08 and they have an apricot tree, 41:10 and I keep missing apricot season 41:13 so to go out there 41:15 'cause I dearly love sweet ripened apricot. 41:17 I like the avocados they have. 41:19 I went on that trip when you go 41:20 'cause apricot is one of my favorite fruit 41:22 so when she is on that trip, I want to go. 41:25 I'm sure she'll take you. 41:26 They also have avocado trees 41:28 and so I try and go during avocado season, 41:30 I still haven't made the apricot season. 41:33 Oh, did you need hair spray? 41:35 No, no, hair spray. 41:37 Please, just does over the top. She didn't spray the top. 41:39 Oh, well, you know, you didn't say anything. 41:40 Both sides of it. All right, I got it. 41:44 Because that's basically all you have to do. 41:47 Now with mine, you're going to have to stir it all around. 41:50 I'm going to add just a little bit more 41:53 and just push it to the edges 41:55 because it doesn't go there itself too well, 41:59 so we're going to all around like that. 42:01 Sis, I have a confession to make. 42:03 What? 42:04 Well, she made some beforehand, 42:08 I'm not saying I did, and I'm not saying I didn't... 42:12 She ate some. 42:14 But there is a reason why one of the waffles was gone. 42:17 I should have known. 42:19 And, Mom, I think we need to fess up, 42:21 there is another reason why the other waffle was gone. 42:24 I'm just saying there is a reason. 42:26 So you guys ate one too. Not saying we did. 42:28 Not saying we didn't. 42:29 And we're not saying we did, not saying we didn't. 42:34 Okay. 42:36 But all I'm saying is her waffles are delicious. 42:39 Oh, yeah. 42:40 Not telling how we know but wow, are they good. 42:43 They even smell good. It really do. 42:45 Well, it has all the fruit in it, 42:49 like I said, I don't really care as much for the sweet, 42:52 I would be on Brenda's waffles, 42:54 they're just awesome with the savory, 42:56 but my husband loves the sweet, 42:59 so I try to do with natural sweeteners. 43:01 And you did that, 43:02 because you've got all the fruit in there, 43:04 that the dried fruits are sweetener for that and so... 43:08 And then when you put the topping on, you've got, 43:11 you know, fruit sweet in topping, 43:12 so I think that's pretty good. 43:14 And I actually make waffles like this 43:18 for every now and then for the girls in my dorm, 43:21 and they love waffles and lot of times 43:25 though Momma have to tell you what they want on top of it, 43:27 is your homemade apple sauce. 43:30 And they will come in and say, 43:32 please can I have some homemade apple sauce, 43:36 and that's 'cause I tell them that you make it 43:38 and you pick the apples off your trees and whatever 43:40 and so they will like that. 43:43 For those who don't know Linda is the girl's dean 43:46 for Great Lakes Adventist Academy. 43:48 In Michigan. Oh, it's awesome school. 43:49 And where at Michigan? 43:51 It's in Cedar Lake, Michigan, it's out in the country, 43:54 it's a country school. 43:55 You look out and you just see rolling hills 43:58 and it actually has our churches right across from us 44:01 so it's, you know, 44:03 like it's out in the country, it's beautiful. 44:05 And Mom is only 25 miles so on my days off I go over 44:09 and help Mom. 44:11 And Cinda and I are really jealous about that, 44:12 we wish we lived close too. We do. 44:14 And actually for Mother's Day, 44:17 I gave Mom a coupon saying that I would clean her house 44:22 whenever she want it, that was my Mother's Day. 44:25 And I've only been out there once to clean her house 44:28 so I owe her quite a few... 44:30 House cleans. House cleaning times. 44:33 So if you don't know what to give to your mom, 44:35 just give her a coupon saying this is good 44:37 and just put the amount on it, I didn't put the amount on it, 44:40 I just said I'll clean your house, 44:42 but you can put, I will clean your house 44:44 you know two or three times 44:46 or whatever you want to do, moms like that too. 44:48 And also nowadays when you've got your computers, 44:50 you can go on and print off and make it a nice certificate 44:53 with all the clip art make it nice and decorative. 44:55 Hey, have potato. Okay, there we go. 44:57 I actually have waffle. All right. 44:59 And you know, Mom, I do love that. 45:02 Let me do another one. 45:03 I do love that about, Mom, because Mom taught us 45:06 that the best gift that you can give is your time yourself. 45:12 Yes, it is. That's right. 45:13 Give yourself. 45:14 Isn't that what you've always said to us? 45:16 To give of yourself. 45:17 Because we would say, Mom, what can we buy you? 45:20 She didn't want us to buy her anything. 45:23 She said the best thing you can do 45:25 is to give your time, give yourself. 45:27 And let's be honest, 45:28 she knew we didn't have any money anyway. 45:30 Exactly. 45:31 You know, so it was 45:33 and the gift of time is really today, 45:35 that's really what I love the most too. 45:38 Right, exactly, I do too 45:39 You know, rather than have somebody buy some for me, 45:40 if they have done something for me, 45:42 if they give me their gift of time 45:44 that means far more to me 45:45 than anything you could, you know, 45:47 wrap up and I could open the gift. 45:48 That's right, and something else 45:50 I learned from you, Mom, 45:51 is when we would ask kids we would all get together 45:56 and make Mom a Mother's Day breakfast. 45:59 We didn't ever make her breakfast in bed. 46:04 Mother, did you like eating breakfast in bed? 46:07 Never. 46:11 I don't think any of us ever like breakfast in bed. 46:13 And you know we all take after Mom. 46:14 We would have to put her back in bed 46:16 for her to have breakfast, 46:17 'cause she gets up early to have worships, 46:19 so I don't know how that would work. 46:21 And to this day my kids will tell you, 46:24 I didn't ever want breakfast in bed. 46:26 Now, I'm not saying anything about you mothers out there 46:30 that like breakfast in bed. 46:31 That's your thing, that's what you should have. 46:33 But we're very social, 46:36 so I didn't ever want to eat alone 46:39 and I didn't want people just sit and they're going, 46:41 "Oh, do you like it, is that good?" 46:44 Watching me eat, I never wanted that. 46:47 Yeah, some people do like breakfast in bed. 46:48 Some people like that. 46:50 My girls in the dorm, if they have a neat room, 46:52 you know, and whatever I give them choices 46:54 and I will give them breakfast in bed 46:56 and I'll fix the whole tray of food 46:58 and then take it to them. 46:59 She is the best world's dean ever. 47:01 So they love that, I let them choose that, 47:03 but I wouldn't like breakfast in bed. 47:05 But we got that from you, Mom, 47:06 because you wanted to come and sit as a family. 47:10 That's right. 47:11 And so we love to decorate the table. 47:13 Table, that's right. 47:15 That we would put out the best dishes that we had, 47:17 they weren't fancy dishes even those 47:18 but you know, we put out the best we had. 47:20 There were some blue goblets though 47:22 and I made sure those were out. 47:23 That's right, we take turns folding the napkin 47:26 in different shades to make it really fancy. 47:28 Sometimes Mom had more than one napkin at her plate. 47:33 Well, there is three of us and two brothers. 47:35 And we'd go in outside and try and find any flowers 47:38 that we could find growing anywhere around... 47:42 Sometimes it was dandelions. We would put it in a vase. 47:45 And there was some that you were allergic too, 47:47 that we found out about. 47:49 Oh, spiraea. Yeah. Yeah. 47:51 Yeah, so be careful about that. 47:52 So yeah, be careful about that, 47:54 may be not pick them off a tree 'cause may be that would. 47:59 But what a wonderful time we had and when we come back, 48:02 we're going to take a quick break 48:06 and when we come back, Mom, we have prepared, 48:09 we're going to have a special preparation for you, 48:12 to our mother to celebrate you. 48:15 But right now my sisters and I have six cookbooks out 48:19 and we're going to show you how you can get books. 48:25 If you've enjoyed the recipes you've seen today 48:27 and would like to purchase your own copy 48:29 of one of their cookbooks including their new cookbook 48:32 Cooking with Kellogg's. 48:33 You can write to 3ABN, PO Box 220, 48:37 West Frankfort, Illinois 62896. 48:40 That's 3ABN, PO Box 220, West Frankfort, Illinois 62896. 48:47 You can call 618-627-4651. 48:51 That's 618-627-4651 48:54 or if you would like to contact the Micheff Sisters 48:57 for a speaking appointments or concerts, 48:59 you can do so at their website at micheffsisters.com. 49:03 That's micheffsisters.com. |
