00:01 Welcome back to the Ultimate Prescription.
00:02 I'm your host, Nick Evenson.
00:04 And we are discussing food as medicine on today's program,
00:06 and specifically we're talking about mushrooms.
00:08 And Dr. Marcum, thank you for sharing, and bringing some white
00:11 mushrooms for us to look at, and discuss today.
00:14 Have you ever picked your own mushrooms?
00:17 Well, I've kicked mushrooms, but I've never gone out to
00:20 the woods and said, This is a white mushroom.
00:23 You love the way the texture...
00:25 I mean I just love the texture of mushrooms.
00:27 You've gone through the woods and kicked them?
00:29 I've kicked mushrooms.
00:30 You know, they feel so neat, you know?
00:34 But I've never just eaten one from the woods,
00:37 because I've been nervous about it.
00:38 Yep. Well, for good reason.
00:39 I actually was taking a class in outdoor education one time,
00:42 and we were on a road trip and stopped at a rest stop,
00:45 and walked into the woods just a little ways.
00:47 And a friend of mine, who's a naturalist, and really knows
00:49 what he's doing in the woods, picked a little mushroom off
00:52 the base of a tree and said, Here, taste this.
00:53 And I was a little reluctant, but everybody else was doing it,
00:55 so I said, Okay, it must be safe, so I tried a little bit.
00:57 And he said, It's called Chicken Foot.
00:59 And it actually tastes a little bit like chicken;
01:01 kind of the texture of it.
01:02 And it grew around the base of this tree.
01:04 And it was pretty neat.
01:05 It was kind of tasty.
01:06 It was a fun thing, but I think that's probably a pretty
01:09 dangerous thing to do if you don't know what you're
01:10 talking about, right?
01:12 I think so, because remember, there are poisonous mushrooms.
01:15 You know? Not everything in the plant kingdom
01:17 necessarily is good for us.
01:19 There's poisonous mushrooms.
01:20 And, unfortunately, there's mushrooms that have a chemical
01:24 called psilocybin mushrooms, and those are hallucinogens.
01:27 And actually people take that and it effects the brain
01:31 in a different way.
01:32 So the mushrooms do have chemistry that
01:35 effects the entire body.
01:36 The same with medications.
01:39 It effects all sorts of cells as well.
01:41 Well, God has put different things in these mushrooms
01:44 that can help us, you know.
01:46 And these are good mushrooms, because they help our immune
01:49 system; they have some trace elements.
01:51 And I was surprised.
01:52 You know, for years I was told, Well, mushrooms really are
01:55 sort of a neutral food that you eat.
01:57 You know it's sort of neutral.
01:59 But it does have some things that actually
02:00 can help you in it.
02:02 And one of the biggest breakthrough's is this
02:05 new type of sort of pseudo amino acid, an essential thing called
02:09 ergo Thiamine, which can help the energy systems of the cells,
02:13 which decreases cell death.
02:16 So that's very interesting.
02:17 We need these to help keep our cells alive, especially the
02:20 ones in the mitochondria, which is the energy storehouse.
02:24 So I wish I knew more about mushrooms.
02:27 I wish I could go out in the woods and say, Hey, I want to
02:29 eat that mushroom, and not be worried that it might
02:31 cause me to think funny.
02:32 Yeah, right, right.
02:34 You know, I was just reading a fact about mushrooms.
02:35 Many mushrooms grow towards the light,
02:38 just like a plant follows the sun.
02:41 But unlike plants, scientists do not yet know how mushrooms
02:44 use the sunlight; only that they do.
02:46 Well, you know, they don't have; they're not chlorophyll.
02:49 Yeah, there's no green in them, I'm sure.
02:50 But some of the mushrooms...
02:52 Remember we've talked about the nutrient value of pigments.
02:55 You know, some of the different things that are out there have
03:00 different pigments that have chemicals
03:02 in them that are helpful. Sure.
03:04 You know? And what color was your mushroom that you ate?
03:06 It was orange. Yeah, so that orange pigment, I would be very
03:09 interested in studying the chemical composition of that
03:13 pigment, and see if it has a valuable biologic effect. Yeah.
03:17 So I think the biochemistry of plants would be very
03:21 interesting to study. Yeah.
03:23 You know, I just wish we could have more
03:25 information about them.
03:26 And I'm continuing to dig and look through the research
03:28 that's done on the chemistry of different fruits,
03:31 vegetables, nuts, and grains. Yep.
03:32 Well, we've got a question that's come in from
03:34 our website, that's
03:37 You can go there and ask the doctor a question.
03:39 And this person writes and asks, I always get a cold
03:42 in the wintertime, and this lays me up every year.
03:45 What can I do to improve my immune function?
03:47 Yeah. Well, different things effect the
03:50 immune cells in the body.
03:51 And let's paint a big picture.
03:54 Anything that causes stress at any level is going to hurt
03:59 your immune system to some degree.
04:01 For instance, if you over exercise that can hurt
04:05 your immune system.
04:06 That stresses you out.
04:07 If you don't get enough sleep, that might stress you out,
04:10 and hurt your immune system. Right.
04:12 If you eat the wrong types of food, that might
04:14 stress your immune system.
04:16 Specifically we know that sugar, processed sugar is sort of
04:19 dampens our immune system.
04:21 So first of all you want to do things...
04:23 People that don't move around; we know that exercise
04:26 can help our immune system.
04:27 So we want to do things that enhance our immune system.
04:31 Okay? Now we've also learned that certain foods help us,
04:35 like a mushroom might help our immune system. Sure.
04:38 Different antioxidants might help our immune system
04:41 as well to function better.
04:43 Because it decreases this process called
04:45 oxidation in the body.
04:47 And if you take the... If you think about a
04:50 Biblical Prescription, whether it be a thought, or an exercise,
04:54 or something that God gives us in the Bible, remember Biblical
04:57 prescriptions help every cell in the body.
05:00 So even though it hasn't been proven, I would like to think
05:03 that the food, the healthy food that God gives us: the fruits,
05:05 vegetables, nuts, and grains, in some way is going to enhance
05:09 our immune system, even though we don't understand,
05:12 or don't have the studies.
05:13 So eating a plant based diet, being out in the sunshine,
05:17 exercising, having good thoughts, worshipping well;
05:22 all of these things, I think, can help the immune
05:25 system to some degree.
05:26 And avoiding those things that stress our bodies
05:29 can help our immune system.
05:30 I feel that's some good advice.
05:32 And we've got another Biblical prescription for you today
05:35 that Dr. Marcum recorded previously, and let's have
05:37 a look at that now.
05:39 I'm Dr. James Marcum with your Biblical Prescription for Life.
05:43 You know, it's hard to know who, or even what to believe in the
05:47 world of health care with the Internet, the print media,
05:51 the television, your doctors, your providers,
05:54 Aunt Mabel, commercials.
05:56 It's hard to know what t believe.
05:58 Well, I want to give you a Biblical Prescription for Life
06:01 today that's found in
06:06 It says
06:12 God's light, the Word of God, has the answer to our
06:16 health care problems.
06:18 When you have a worry or concern regarding your health care,
06:20 I want you to turn to Christ, the true light first.
06:24 Go to that place for answers.
06:26 And you know what? God will illuminate your life
06:29 and give you truth.
06:30 I'm Dr. James Marcum, and this is your
06:33 Biblical Prescription for Life.
06:39 And we're going to talk a little bit more about
06:40 Biblical Prescriptions for Life, but I want you to write down
06:42 this website first. It's
06:48 And we have a number of resources on the
06:50 website that you can use.
06:52 That video clip is available there.
06:53 You can download it and share it with your friends on social
06:55 media, play it in your church, or how ever you want to share
06:57 that, you're welcome to.
06:59 We also have a leaders guide for anyone who wants to lead this.
07:03 If you could put the DVD in the player and press play,
07:05 and ask a few questions to facilitate a discussion about
07:09 health, you can lead this study.
07:11 It's made for anybody to be able to lead.
07:12 And just go to the website, and get some of those resources,
07:17 and look into it, because this is really a good tool to not
07:19 only help yourself, but also to reach out to others.
07:21 You know, when we reach out to others, and we sort of do what
07:25 God has said, that's going to help our belief system,
07:27 because as we see God working it's going to strengthen our
07:30 faith in our belief systems.
07:32 It also, when we care for other people, you know,
07:35 we're caring for Christ.
07:37 And we're helping improve their health by teaching them these.
07:39 A lot of people don't know these health principles that we've
07:42 talked about. Right.
07:43 I'm surprised! I go to some people and they go, Wow!
07:47 I can feel better if I sleep more at night, or if I don't eat
07:50 this, or if I do...
07:52 They don't understand these things.
07:53 And just illuminating them with truth that God has given each
07:57 one of us, we can help move them not only to better health,
08:00 maybe come off of a prescription pill, treat a chronic disease,
08:04 but we could lead them to the Ultimate Prescription.
08:06 And that's what we're called to do is to spread the gospel
08:09 in whatever way God uses us.
08:11 And it might be something like talking to somebody.
08:15 It might be leading a Bible study.
08:17 It might be helping to spread the message in
08:19 whatever way that be.
08:20 It might be holding a camera.
08:22 It might be working in a control room to get this message out.
08:26 But this is a new way to evangelize.
08:29 And in the world we live in, God wants new ways to spread the
08:33 gospel message to everyone.
08:34 And it doesn't have to be complex, it can just be meeting
08:37 a need, introducing them to a relationship, and showing people
08:40 that it's not that hard to do, and it's possible.
08:43 God loves us; wants us to be with Him.
08:46 That's right. You know, I was recently interviewing a pastor
08:48 who used this program in his church.
08:50 And he actually preached sermons based on the lesson studies for
08:54 each week from Biblical Prescriptions.
08:56 And in the interview he was talking about the program
08:58 and how much it meant to him personally.
09:00 And he was sharing that, you know, we talk about stewardship
09:03 quite a bit, and we talk about giving our tithe and offerings
09:06 to God, and taking care of the things that He's given to us.
09:09 But the body is one of those things.
09:11 And he was saying, You know, if we leave out our physical
09:13 health, we're not living as God intended.
09:15 And that's a huge mistake.
09:17 Yeah, you're right.
09:19 And, you know, when we made this, we tried to...
09:21 You know, this has been around.
09:23 You see, these aren't new ideas.
09:24 These ideas have been around a long time. Right.
09:27 But we tried to package this in love.
09:30 It's how it's wrapped.
09:31 It's how it's presented.
09:32 And if you present the gospel in love, and let Christ lead,
09:37 then you're going to have successful results.
09:38 So I think this is a new way that people can do personal
09:42 evangelism, as well as improve their health.
09:44 So I want to encourage people to go to the 3ABN website,
09:47 check into this Biblical Prescriptions.
09:50 I think it's something that can help everyone out this year.
09:53 That's right. And the website again is:
09:59 Or you can go to the 3ABN store, and you can also call 3ABN
10:03 directly at:
10:07 And just again, we have resources on our website at
10:09 BiblicalPrescriptions.com/3abn where you can find videos
10:14 to help promote posters, and help promote your study;
10:17 all the tools that you need to let others know about your small
10:20 group Bible study, and to get the word out, and also to help
10:23 you learn how to lead this program.
10:24 And this is just a tool.
10:26 There's many good tools out there.
10:27 This is just one other approach to help you lead people towards
10:31 the design that God gave us for health.
10:32 And 3ABN has a great amount of supplies.
10:35 And we found out that they can send them to anywhere.
10:37 That's right. All around the world.
10:39 All around the world.
10:40 It's exciting that God can spread the gospel in this manner.
10:43 So this is a way that everyone can be involved
10:46 in spreading the gospel.
10:47 Yep. Dr. Marcum, thank you for your insights on
10:49 health, and on food.
10:51 I know I learn a lot every time I sit here with you and talk
10:53 about different prescriptions that God's given us.
10:56 So thank you for that.
10:57 And thank you at home for joining us
10:58 today on the broadcast.
11:00 We hope that you've learned a lot about food as medicine.
11:02 And Dr. Marcum is going to be with you in just a moment
11:05 to close the program with prayer.
11:13 In addition to the healing powers of mushrooms,
11:16 I want you to remember about how your spiritual life
11:20 and physical life are intertwined.
11:22 When we have a better physical life our
11:25 spirituality can improve.
11:27 When we have a better worship life our physical lives improve.
11:31 If you go to our website: HeartwiseMinistries.org
11:34 we have a place where we can pray for each other,
11:38 and we can also help each other grow spiritually.
11:42 I want to close our time together in prayer.
11:45 Let's bow our heads together.
11:47 Father God, thank You for giving us the ability to be with You
11:53 and have a relationship that's real.
11:56 Help us to spread the message of your love to the world that we
11:59 live in, and help others to come to that loving relationship,
12:03 saving, healing relationship that You've promised.
12:06 Thank You for the time we spent together.
12:08 And there might be someone out there, Father, that needs Your
12:11 healing hand in a special way.
12:12 Please be near them this very moment is my prayer today. Amen.
12:18 Well, I want to thank you for spending time on this program.
12:24 I hope you learned a little bit.
12:26 And if you have questions, or medical questions, or you need
12:29 someone to pray for you, go to our website at:
12:34 It's a great resource where you can watch radio programs,
12:37 and clips, and you can share it with your friends and neighbors.
12:40 And I'm Dr. James Marcum wishing you the best of health.
