00:02 male announcer: This presentation is brought to you
00:03 by the friends of the Amazing Facts Ministry. 00:14 Doug Batchelor: The most scathing rebukes that Jesus 00:17 made, it was not against the publicans and the harlots and 00:20 the sinners. 00:21 It was against false religion. 00:24 How does God see it when we have the facade of religion, but our 00:29 hearts are corrupt? 00:34 Doug: We're living in very interesting times. 00:38 I think it's important that we declare to you the whole counsel 00:44 of God. 00:45 And today would be one of those subjects that could be 00:48 misunderstood unless I give a little preface and explain. 00:52 There are some things in the Bible that are some strong 00:56 statements and we're going to be sharing today some of the 01:00 strongest statements that Jesus made that are given to us as 01:05 warnings in love, but I hope that you'll just take it in the 01:10 spirit that it's given, but it's something that we think need to 01:13 consider because well, eternal life depends on it. 01:18 And so our sermon today is based on an oxymoron and it's called 01:24 "A Sincere Hypocrite." 01:27 Because hypocrisy, of course is the antithesis of sincerity, 01:32 but, you know, the Bible has quite a bit to say 01:34 about hypocrisy. 01:37 And it's something we need to pray that God will help us 01:40 recognize and guard against. 01:43 Now what is hypocrisy? 01:44 Well, hypocrisy comes from a Greek word that really talks 01:49 about the theatre in ancient Greece, even before the time of 01:52 Christ, when actors got out on the stage and they assume 01:56 different parts. 01:57 They had these masks that they put up and one actor might wear 02:00 several different masks. 02:01 At one point he would come out and he'd hold his mask and have 02:03 a big happy face on it. 02:04 You've probably seen some examples of this in art, 02:07 the Greek mask and then when he was angry, he'd have an angry 02:11 face, and all of sudden if the devil should appear he'd pick 02:14 up the devil face. 02:15 And then if there was an angel same actor would then put on the 02:17 angel face. 02:18 And he'd go through his lines, let everyone know when he held 02:20 the angel face. 02:22 This is the angel speaking. 02:23 And so, the idea of one person changing among many different 02:27 masks is where you get this word hypokrites or hypocrite. 02:32 And it's talking about a person who is able to just sort of 02:36 convey something that isn't authentic, isn't really them. 02:39 The practice, here's a hypocrite, the practice of 02:42 professing beliefs, feelings, or virtues that one does not really 02:47 hold or possess. 02:49 Falseness, being two faced, play acting, to make a pretense. 02:57 It's found about 40 times in the Bible. 03:00 That's including the word hypocrite and hypocrisy in case 03:03 you do a search. 03:04 You know, I understand on the Italian Riviera that it's very 03:08 desirable if you could have a home facing the Mediterranean. 03:13 Some of the homes are very old and they were not built with 03:15 balconies and everybody wants a balcony on their home, but 03:19 because of the ancient architecture balconies could not 03:22 affordably be added to some of these homes. 03:26 And so what the creative owners did is they got artists to paint 03:30 balconies on their house. 03:34 And so--and to make it look real some of them would even 03:37 paint laundry hanging from their balcony to give it that 03:41 authenticity, but you could never stand on that balcony. 03:44 It was a facade. 03:47 Sometimes Christians paint on our religion and it's not real. 03:55 And we're all at risk, of sometimes being a little 04:00 bit hypocritical. 04:01 How many of you have heard someone say I'm not going to 04:04 church because it's just full of hypocrites. 04:05 You ever heard that before? 04:07 Then you heard it last week. 04:09 And I like to always say you should still come, 04:11 there's always room for one more 04:13 because let's face it, we all sometimes deal 04:17 with being authentic and at the heart of 04:19 what I want to say today, 04:21 in case you miss it or drift off, it's an appeal that we 04:26 should be genuine. 04:27 That a religion must be a heart religion. 04:30 The most scathing rebukes that Jesus made, it was not against 04:34 the publicans and the harlots and the sinners, it was against 04:38 false religion. 04:40 People who are having a pretense of being something that they 04:44 really weren't. 04:46 Now some reasons that people get involved in hypocrisy is they're 04:50 trying to make an impression. 04:53 First of all, it's not wrong to want to make a good impression. 04:59 A lot of you would never be married if you didn't know how 05:02 to try to make a good impression. 05:06 And if people are visiting, we want to make a good impression. 05:10 You want to be positive. 05:11 Jesus said, "Let your good works so shine before men that they 05:15 may glorify your Father in Heaven." 05:17 So why are you making the good impression is the question. 05:19 Is it you're doing it to glorify you or is it to glorify your 05:23 Father in Heaven? 05:25 You know, Jesus made a statement about tombs. 05:27 It was in our Scripture reading. 05:30 It says in Matthew 23, we keep going back to that passage, "Woe 05:34 to you scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! 05:37 For you are like whitewashed tombs, which indeed appear 05:39 beautiful on the outside but inside they're full of dead 05:43 men's bones, and all manner of uncleanness. 05:47 Even so outwardly you appear righteous to men, but inwardly 05:51 you're full of hypocrisy and lawlessness." 05:53 How does God see it when we have the facade of religion but our 05:58 hearts are corrupt? 05:59 Now I should pause, explain when the children of Israel were 06:04 carried off to Babylon because of their idolatry and their 06:07 unfaithfulness, 70 years later, they were able to come back. 06:11 When they came back some of the religious leaders said, "We 06:14 don't want to ever make that mistake again, so God withdraws 06:17 his blessing and we are carried away." 06:20 And so they became very regimented in their religion to 06:23 compel everybody to make sure that they're faithful not only 06:26 was idolatry never a problem again, they had laws about how 06:30 to keep the Sabbath with great precision. 06:32 They had laws about washing before you eat and all the 06:36 ceremonies and the rigors of religion. 06:38 And they kept adding laws. 06:40 And they got to where some of the religious leaders were proud 06:44 of that they were more religious than the other religious leaders 06:47 and it became an Olympic competition. 06:50 And this happened over a couple of hundred years, where they 06:53 developed a sect called the Sadducees. 06:55 Talking about the purified ones. 06:58 And they just took religion to a whole new level and it all 07:03 became external to advertise how pious and holy they were. 07:08 And so, Jesus he spoke out against the scribes and 07:11 the Pharisees. 07:12 And you can read in the first few verses, "Jesus spoke to the 07:16 multitudes and the disciples and he said, 'The scribes and the 07:21 Pharisees sit in Moses' seat,'" they were the religious leaders, 07:24 "therefore, whatever they tell you observe and do but not 07:27 according to their works; for they say and they do not. 07:31 For they bind heavy burdens on men on their shoulders; but they 07:35 themselves will not lift them with one of their fingers. 07:38 All their works they do to be seen by men." 07:42 That pretty much sums. 07:43 It up if your religion is for demonstration of what others 07:47 think it's vain. 07:50 "Woe to you scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites!" 07:54 Verse 14, "Woe to you scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites!" 07:57 Verse 15, "Woe to you scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites!" 08:02 Verse 16, he just says, "Woe to you blind guides." 08:05 You go on to verse 23, "Woe to you scribes and 08:07 Pharisees, hypocrites!" 08:09 Verse 25, "Woe to you scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites." 08:12 Verse 27, "Woe to you hypocrites." 08:14 Verse 29, "Woe to you hypocrites." 08:17 Word hypocrite I think is found seven times in this chapter, 08:20 interesting number, and he says, "Woe to you" I think 08:23 eight times. 08:24 This is the strongest language that Jesus speaks even in the 08:29 Sermon on the Mount when he begins preaching, he addresses 08:33 the problem with hypocrisy among the scribes and the Pharisees. 08:38 And so you're going to hear a little bit about the Pharisees 08:40 in the message today. 08:42 If you look in Matthew 23 verse 4 not only does it say, "They 08:46 bind heavy burdens on man." 08:47 It says, "all their works they do to be seen of men. 08:50 They make broad their phylacteries." 08:53 Now the phylactery, if you hear that word, what's a phylactery? 08:57 Moses said, "These words I command you today shall be in 09:01 your heart. 09:03 You shall bind them for a sign on your hand, they will be 09:05 frontlets between your eyes." 09:06 And so, you've probably seen pictures before. 09:08 I think we've got one we're going to put up on 09:09 the screen here. 09:10 You can see around their wrists they'd wrap these leather tongs 09:13 and there would be a piece of Scripture on a box on their 09:16 right hand, and then the on their forehead they'd have a 09:20 little box that had scripture in it. 09:22 No Moses didn't mean and God did not mean for them to take 09:25 elements of Scripture and tie it to their forehead or tie it to 09:28 their hand. 09:29 He meant have it in your head, have it in your actions, and 09:33 have it in your heart. 09:34 Obviously in the heart was a figure of speech, but they took 09:37 it literally. 09:39 And they put these phylacteries. 09:40 They still wear them today, the Orthodox Jews, on their hands 09:44 and on their heads. 09:46 And he said they'd make wide the borders of their garments 'cause 09:48 the priest was told to have a border of blue to show his 09:51 loyalty to the law. 09:52 And so, the priests all have, you will see it in 09:54 illustrations, they had a border of blue. 09:57 Well, if someone had a little border of blue, one priest would 10:00 say his border is wider than my border. 10:02 Well, I'm going to make my wide, my border of blue wider than 10:06 his border. 10:07 And pretty soon they were wearing these dragging around 10:09 long boarders of blue to show I'm more loyal than they are. 10:13 And so all of it began to be sort of a show of who could be 10:17 the most religious. 10:19 "They enlarge the borders of their garments. 10:21 They love the uppermost seats and the feasts, and the chief 10:23 seats in the synagogues, and the greetings in the markets, and to 10:27 be call of men, 'Rabbi Rabbi Phd.'" 10:32 And it was all about your position. 10:35 I think it was Spurgeon said, "We should not be proud of face 10:39 or place or race." 10:42 And it was all about their office and they wanted that. 10:45 They're worried about what everyone else thought of them. 10:47 And so it was all outward religion. 10:50 Man looks on the outside. 10:52 God looks on the inside. 10:54 We often live because we're worried about what man sees. 10:56 And we forget about what really matters. 10:58 What does God see? 10:59 Are we genuine? 11:01 I catch myself being a hypocrite. 11:04 I'm just telling you right up front. 11:06 But I'm not terribly ashamed to say that publicly because 11:09 whether you know it or not you are too sometimes. 11:13 But we got to get the victory over that. 11:14 I'm not saying it and saying, "Oh well. 11:16 We're all hypocrites." 11:17 No, we've got really evaluate are we doing things for the 11:22 glory of God? 11:23 Are we worried about what everyone thinks? 11:25 Do we ever put on our religion to try to do is look good? 11:29 Hypocrisy is one of the most dangerous attitudes for 11:32 a Christian. 11:33 Jesus spoke the strongest against it. 11:35 We all sometimes wear masks. 11:37 Somebody once said hypocrisy is the homage that vice pays 11:41 to virtue. 11:42 That's pretty profound when you think about that. 11:45 Oswald Chambers said, "The world is glad for an excuse to ignore 11:49 the gospel message and the hypocrisy of Christians is their 11:53 favorite excuse." 11:55 Now hypocrisy does not just appear in the New Testament, 11:58 because it's a Greek word. 12:00 Hypocrisy is addressed in the Old Testament. 12:02 Look real quick if you will, first chapter of Isaiah. 12:06 He dives right in. 12:08 Isaiah sort of like the Old Testament gospel and he doesn't 12:11 spare any punches. 12:13 Go to verse 12, okay? 12:15 "When you come to appear before Me, Who has required this from 12:19 your hand to trample My courts? 12:22 To bring no more futile sacrifices; incense is an 12:25 abomination to Me. 12:27 The New Moons, the Sabbaths, the calling of assemblies I cannot 12:31 endure iniquity," so as you're going through the religious 12:34 things, but it's coming from iniquity, "and the 12:36 sacred meeting. 12:37 Your New Moons, your appointed feasts, My soul hates; They are 12:40 troubled to Me. 12:42 I am weary of bearing them. 12:43 When you spread out your hands, I will hide--" that means when 12:45 they would pray and they'd spread out their hands. 12:47 "I will hide My eyes from you, even though you make many 12:50 prayers, I will not hear. 12:52 Your hands are full of blood." 12:55 And he says here's the solution. 12:57 "Wash yourselves, make yourselves clean; Put away the 13:01 evil of your doings from before My eyes. 13:03 Cease to do evil, Learn to do good; Seek justice. 13:07 Rebuke the oppressor; Defend the fatherless, Plead for the widow. 13:11 'Come now, let us reason together,' says the Lord, 13:14 'Though your sins are like scarlet, They'll be white as 13:16 snow; though they are red like crimson, They will be like wool. 13:20 If you are willing and obedient, You'll eat the good of the land; 13:24 But if you refuse and rebel, You'll be devoured by 13:27 the sword.'" 13:28 And the understanding here is no matter how many prayers you 13:31 pray, no matter how many offerings you sacrifice, no 13:34 matter how many time you show up in the temple for the various 13:37 feasts and sabbaths, if your hearts aren't cleansed by 13:41 the Gospel. 13:42 It's smoke in his nose is what the Bible says. 13:46 The Lord wants us to be real Christians. 13:50 As I quoted a minute ago, Oswald Chambers said, "The world is 13:54 always--" doesn't the media love to find a hypocrite Christian? 13:58 They'll hold that forth and say, you know, if this is how the 14:02 Christians were acting then I am still safe not going to church 14:05 'cause they're just all hypocrites. 14:07 The devil is scared of nothing more than genuine Christians 14:10 that are really changed from the inside out. 14:14 announcer: Don't forget to request today's life changing 14:17 free resource. 14:18 Not only can you receive this free gift in the mail, you can 14:20 download a digital copy straight to your computer or 14:23 mobile device. 14:24 To get your copy of today's free gift simply call us and ask for 14:28 the offer number shown on your screen or visit the web address 14:32 and download a digital copy. 14:34 And be sure to select a digital download option on the 14:36 request page. 14:38 It's now easier than ever for you to study God's Word with 14:41 Amazing Facts wherever and whenever you want, and most 14:44 important to share it with others. 14:49 Doug: What does God want? 14:50 Psalm 51 verse 6, "Behold," here it is, "You desire truth in the 14:56 inward parts. 14:58 And in the hidden part You will make me to know wisdom." 15:02 God wants us to be honest and true on the inside. 15:05 And years ago went to Egypt, and I saw King Tut's treasures, and 15:11 when Howard Carter first discovered King Tut's tomb, I 15:15 think it was 1921 that they unsealed the first tomb, they 15:19 went in this great stone cut room and then there was this 15:22 big coffin. 15:23 And they open up the coffin, there was a gold box, and then 15:26 it was another gold box, and another gold box, and there was 15:29 like a nest of seven coffins, and then they had this 15:33 beautiful, it's a masterpiece, as one coffin's got 240 pounds 15:40 of gold studded with gems. 15:43 And then they lift that off, they get this priceless, you've 15:45 seen the face mask of King Tut. 15:47 Considered one of the most priceless artwork, its almost 15:49 perfect gold. 15:52 And then they took that off the mummy. 15:54 And it was wrapped in some cloth that had some gold in it. 15:59 And then finally, they took that off and you know what they found 16:02 underneath it all. 16:04 Here's a picture of King Tut. 16:07 So all that gold, this around, and he was a young 16:09 king actually. 16:11 He doesn't look very young right now. 16:12 He died at about 19 years of age, but all that gold, and all 16:15 that beauty, and all that art is surrounding a rotten, 16:19 withered mummy. 16:22 This is what Jesus is talking about. 16:24 If we've got all the beauty in our religion and we don't 16:29 have the heart change. 16:30 This is what I see he says what does he want? 16:32 Christ said Pharisee, you clean the outside of the cup and you 16:37 don't clean the inside. 16:39 Now if you are going to go to someone's house and they tell 16:43 you, you know, I've got a problem, I'm a little bit, I'm a 16:45 little bit conflicted. 16:47 I can't ever make up my mind, whether to wash the inside or 16:50 the outside of my dishes. 16:51 What are you going to want to hear? 16:53 That they wash the outside or the inside? 16:56 If you're going to be drinking from their cup, you just want 16:58 the outside clean or do you especially want the 17:00 inside clean? 17:02 Well, this is how the Lord is. 17:03 He says look if you got to choose between the two, I don't 17:05 care about the outside as much as the inside. 17:06 That's okay for you to be good on the outside too but start 17:10 with the inside, because if the heart is changed, the words are 17:14 changed, the life is changed, it all changes when they get 17:17 the gospel. 17:19 It's got to start on the inside. 17:23 So why do people--why do we sometimes pretend to be what 17:28 we're not? 17:29 Well like Jesus said sometimes we're trying to make a big 17:31 impression or worried about what people think. 17:34 You know oftentimes, it's fear. 17:36 People do hypocritical things because they're afraid. 17:40 Two examples, David, 1 Samuel 21, he heard that Achish 17:46 realized who he was. 17:48 It says, "When David heard these words he was very much afraid of 17:51 Achish, king of Gath." 17:52 He was a philistine king. 17:54 So he changed his behavior. 17:56 He pretended he was crazy. 17:58 He scratched on the doors. 18:00 He led his spit go down his beard. 18:03 Now what's--he was pretending to be something he wasn't, why? 18:07 Because he was afraid. 18:09 Why did Abraham pretend that Sarah was just his sister? 18:14 He was afraid. 18:15 Said she's so beautiful they might kill me. 18:16 So I tell you what, let's make a deal, wink wink. 18:18 He tells Sarah, "Let's just say, it's the brother-sister. 18:20 I mean, after all we do have the same father, different mothers, 18:24 but let's not make a big deal out of the 18:26 husband-wife relationship. 18:27 Let's pretend." 18:28 It's even just partial hypocrisy. 18:30 You've heard of a half truth before. 18:33 If you've got a half truth, what's the other half? 18:37 And so why? 18:38 He was afraid. 18:41 God says to Sarah, "You laughed when you heard My prophecy and 18:44 My promise." 18:46 She said, "I didn't laugh," because she was afraid. 18:48 She did laugh. 18:50 Why did Isaac say that Rebecca was a sister? 18:52 He was afraid of the Philistines. 18:55 Peter, Jesus said, Peter said I'll not deny you even though 19:01 all of these deny you. 19:03 I'll never deny you. 19:04 And he may even mentored them, but why did he end up 19:06 denying Jesus? 19:08 He was afraid. 19:09 What was he afraid of? 19:11 Did he--was he afraid that servant girl was going to beat 19:12 him up. 19:14 No, he was afraid of what they thought. 19:17 He was afraid, all of the sudden that Jesus had become 19:19 very unpopular. 19:20 Peter had a problem with wanting to be popular. 19:23 You know it even says in Galatians chapter 2 verse 11, 19:27 even after Peter was converted, he backslid a little bit. 19:31 Just to give you the story. 19:35 The Jews were very careful about obeying in certain laws. 19:39 They didn't like the association with the Gentiles. 19:42 God told Peter, "Look do not call the Gentiles unclean, I've 19:45 cleansed them. 19:47 They can all be saved just like you." 19:48 But when Jews came to visit Peter up in Asia, and Peter had 19:53 been living with the Gentiles, eating with the Gentiles, 19:55 hangin' out with the Gentiles just like it should be, but when 19:58 the Jews came he thought what will they think of me? 20:01 And he started to withdraw from them and just hang out with 20:03 the Jews. 20:05 And it was basically was discrimination, a little racism, 20:06 you might say. 20:08 Now listen to what Paul says. 20:10 Paul, Galatians 2:11, "Now when Peter had come to Antioch, I 20:13 withstood him to his face, because he was to be blamed; for 20:17 before certain men came from James, down in Jerusalem, he was 20:21 eating with the Gentiles; but when they came, he withdrew 20:23 himself and separated himself, fearing those," there you got it 20:26 again, why did he do it? 20:28 Afraid. 20:30 "Fearing those who were of the circumcision, the Jews, and the 20:32 rest of the Jews, who had already been up there with 20:34 Peter, they joined him in his hypocrisy. 20:37 Even Barnabas got carried away with their hypocrisy." 20:42 Good news in the hope that if Jesus can convert fishermen. 20:47 He can convert us. 20:49 So does it bother you that there's hypocrites in 20:52 the church? 20:55 I'm more concerned about hypocrisy in me. 20:59 Sort of human nature sometimes to put on a show. 21:02 Christians need to get the victory over that but it 21:04 shouldn't bother you in that do you counterfeit a nickel? 21:11 Have you heard of counterfeit 20 dollar bills? 21:14 You'll find counterfeit $100 bills. 21:17 I've never seen a counterfeit nickel. 21:21 Do you know why? 21:23 It's not worth it. 21:24 What do you counterfeit? 21:26 You counterfeit things that are valuable. 21:30 Why does the devil have so many counterfeit Christians? 21:33 Because nothing is more valuable in the world than a 21:36 real Christian. 21:37 That's why you've got so many counterfeits. 21:40 And so it shouldn't surprise us. 21:42 Don't be discouraged. 21:45 Now why is it so important that we understand what it means to 21:49 be a hypocrite? 21:52 Hypocrites aren't going to make it. 21:55 Job 8:13, "So the path, so is the path of all who forget God; 22:00 And the hope of the hypocrite shall perish." 22:03 Now there's hope for you and me right now but someday, in the 22:07 end when the Lord comes, Job 20, verse 5, "The triumphing of the 22:10 wicked is short, the joy of the hypocrite is just for a moment?" 22:14 It's the praise of men. 22:16 Job 34:30, "The hypocrite should not reign," we will not live and 22:20 reign with Christ and find, listen to what Jesus said, 22:22 Matthew 24:51. 22:24 "The master of that servant will come on a day he's not looking 22:28 for him and an hour he's not aware of, will cut him in two 22:32 and appoint him his portion with the hypocrites. 22:35 And there'll be weeping and gnashing of teeth." 22:38 Is that pretty clear where the hypocrites are going to end up? 22:41 That's why it's important that we talk about this because Jesus 22:43 talks about it but there is hope for us. 22:49 Can a Pharisee be saved? 22:52 Did Jesus save any Pharisees? 22:55 Do you know why Nicodemus met with Jesus at night? 22:58 He was a pharisee. 22:59 He was afraid of what the other Pharisees would think. 23:04 But when Jesus finally died on the cross, he got over his fear, 23:06 and he came to take care of the body. 23:10 Joseph of Arimathea, you don't ever hear about him until 23:13 Jesus dies. 23:14 He was more worried about what God thought than what the other 23:16 Pharisees thought that had just condemned Jesus. 23:19 And it says Joseph went boldly to Pilate and asked for 23:22 his body. 23:24 Pilate thought I thought you Pharisees wanted him dead. 23:25 Now you want to honor him? 23:27 I don't understand. 23:28 Joseph was bold. 23:29 And then you know another famous Pharisee, his name is Saul 23:32 of Tarsus. 23:34 Later called Paul. 23:36 Let me read this to you, Acts 23:6, "But Paul perceived that 23:40 one part was Sadducees and the other were Pharisees. 23:42 He cried out in the council, 'Men and brethren, I am a 23:45 Pharisee, the son of a Pharisee."' 23:49 Acts 26:5, "They knew me from the first, if they were willing 23:53 to testify, that according to the strictest sect of our 23:57 religion I lived a Pharisee." 24:00 Now you know what that means? 24:04 That half of the New Testament was written by a Pharisee that 24:08 was converted. 24:10 So is there hope for a hypocrite? 24:13 What happened to Paul? 24:15 Paul ran into Jesus on the road to Damascus and his heart 24:19 was changed. 24:20 He was thoroughly converted. 24:22 He spent a lot of time on his knees--he fasted and prayed for 24:25 three days. 24:27 And once he really got ahold of the real thing, well you know, 24:31 this you've got to understand that even those who are a little 24:35 hypocritical, they know there's value in the real thing and 24:38 they're trying for the real thing, but instead of worried 24:40 first about what God thinks, they're worried about what 24:42 men think. 24:44 Now Gospel summed up in two things: love for God and love 24:49 for your neighbor. 24:51 What comes first? 24:53 First, come unto me, Matthew 11, comes before Matthew 28. 24:59 It's first this love relationship. 25:01 If we will start with what does God think of me and then when we 25:04 get that right. 25:06 Then we live before other people. 25:08 So they'll glorify our Father in Heaven, we want to be good 25:10 examples, but it's got to start with is God the most important?
