00:03 by the friends of the "Amazing Facts" ministry. 00:07 ♪♪♪ 00:14 Doug Batchelor: If you take up the keys for Christian growth, 00:17 you're gonna grow, and if you are not making an effort 00:20 to oppose the escalator of sin, you're on the down escalator, 00:24 that's where you're gonna go. 00:26 You have to make an effort to go up. 00:31 Doug Batchelor: I heard about some tourists that were visiting 00:33 a number of sites around Europe and they were traveling together 00:37 in a van and they'd stop at the different locations, and they 00:40 didn't have a tour guide with them but they'd inquire 00:43 about what was happening from place to place. 00:45 They're looking at some of the places where great people like 00:48 Luther and Calvin and some of the different kings and monarchs 00:50 and people of history were born and where they lived. 00:53 And they came to this beautiful, picturesque village 00:58 on the border of France and Switzerland, and they were 01:01 taking pictures and looking around and they saw a man 01:03 sitting there by the town square and they said, "Were any 01:07 great men born in this village?" 01:10 And he answered with his French accent and said, 01:13 "No, only babies," no great men, only babies born here. 01:21 So it doesn't matter how old you are, if you are 9 or 90, 01:26 if you have accepted Christ, you are a baby at first. 01:30 You're a baby Christian and that's normal, that's wonderful, 01:34 you're born again, but you don't want to stay a baby. 01:38 It is a tragedy when you meet people who have been Christians 01:42 for years and they've not grown, not grown in the 01:47 right direction anyway. 01:49 Paul talks about this in 1 Corinthians chapter 3, verse 1, 01:55 "And I, brethren, could not speak to you as spiritual people 01:59 but as carnal, as babes in Christ. 02:02 I fed you with milk and not with solid food; for until now you're 02:06 not able to receive it, and even now you're still not able; 02:10 for you are carnal. 02:11 For wherever there is envy, strife, and divisions among you, 02:15 are you not carnal and behaving like mere men?" 02:18 Now, a baby, they're very cute, they're lovely, they're pure 02:22 in many ways and they're very selfish, they are what 02:25 you would call carnal creatures. 02:28 What's on a baby's mind? 02:32 "I want to be comfortable, I want to be entertained, 02:37 I want to be fed, and if I needed cleaning, clean me." 02:41 Babies are not thinking, "How are you doing? 02:44 Is there anything I can do for you?" 02:46 They're very selfish. 02:48 And you know, when you first come to Christ, you may come 02:49 to Christ and you say, "I don't want to go to the lake of fire 02:53 and I do want to go to heaven," so you're thinking 02:55 about yourself. 02:56 And that might be a suitable starting point, but as you 02:58 mature as a Christian, you're supposed to overcome the total 03:02 selfish carnal way of thinking and begin to eat more 03:07 substantial Christian food. 03:10 Now, we're gonna be talking about the 03:13 "Keys to Christian Growth." 03:15 There's things you can do to encourage growth 03:17 and there's things you can do to miss out on growth, 03:21 and we'll be talking about both. 03:23 First of all, Jesus said, Mark 4:26, "The kingdom of God is as 03:29 if a man should scatter seed on the ground, and should sleep by 03:34 night and rise by day," meaning day and night goes by, "And the 03:39 seed should sprout and grow, and he himself does not know how." 03:43 The seed does what? 03:45 It sprouts and it doesn't stay the same, it grows. 03:49 You know, they have seeds that they found in King Tut's tomb, 03:53 they had some beans, they put them in the sunlight with some 03:58 moisture and warmth and they sprouted, 3,000 years old. 04:06 How does God somehow store the essence of life in a seed 04:11 like that and, thousands of years later in just the right 04:16 conditions, it'll grow? 04:19 And so the secret that Jesus is telling us here about growth is, 04:24 if you give the right conditions, it is natural 04:27 for you to grow; if they're neglected, you won't grow. 04:31 So we know that there's a problem, what is the answer? 04:35 There's seven keys, I'm not going to get through all of them 04:37 today, seven keys to spiritual growth. 04:43 And it's basically, when a baby's born, it's the same seven 04:47 things a baby needs: food, air, exercise, family, 04:55 regular cleaning, rest and love. 04:58 I don't have seven fingers in his hands, you'll have to use 05:00 your imagination for those last two. 05:03 So these are the seven keys; if a person does these things on 05:07 a regular basis they will grow, if you want spiritual growth 05:11 these are the things. 05:13 So what's the first thing? Food. 05:14 What do you think the food is? 05:17 It's the Bible, you've got to eat right, you gotta eat right 05:20 and you gotta eat regular. 05:22 1 Peter chapter 2, verse 2, "As newborn babes, desire the pure 05:28 milk of the word, that you may grow thereby." 05:31 You will become like what you listen to and what you look at, 05:37 you are the sum total of what you're taking into your mind. 05:39 If you want there to be a change in who you are, there needs 05:42 to be a change in what you eat; talking about what 05:46 you're eating, what do you feed yourself? 05:49 What are you reading? 05:50 What are you watching? 05:52 You're kidding yourself if you're watching bad things and 05:53 you're thinking that it's having no impact on who you are 05:57 as a person and how it shapes your character. 06:00 Everybody is going to be the sum total of what they eat. 06:03 They say, "You are what you eat." 06:04 It's true physically, it's true spiritually. 06:07 And most of you know what I'm sharing now, I say it 06:09 all the time but the single most important thing you can do is 06:13 read the Word, spend time regularly in the Bible, 06:19 make it a priority. 06:21 Faith comes by hearing. 06:23 You want more faith? 06:24 You want a mature faith? 06:26 "Faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God." 06:30 Job says, "I have treasured the words of His mouth 06:33 More than my necessary food." 06:35 Now, when you're a baby, you must be spoon-fed. 06:42 As you get a little older, you know, you eventually put a spoon 06:45 in the baby's hand and they're sitting sometimes in a highchair 06:49 and you try to help them. 06:50 You put the spoon their hand, you take the spoon and you put 06:53 it in their mouth. 06:54 And sometimes they'll throw the spoon across the room and they 06:56 just take their hands and put it in their mouth, sometimes they 06:58 take their hands and put in their ear and their nose. 07:01 And they're learning to feed themselves and it's cute, 07:05 you know? 07:07 as long as you got a shower curtain on the floor 07:08 or something to clean up, it is. 07:10 But when they get a little older, if you see an adult 07:13 doing like that you go move to another room. 07:16 Right? 07:18 You want to learn how to feed yourself. 07:22 There's so many baby Christians out there, friends, I hope you 07:24 won't take offense, I'm just telling you. 07:26 Honestly, all they get all week long is what they get in church 07:30 once a week, they're not feeding themselves. 07:34 If you're a mature Christian, you have your own personal Bible 07:37 study plan and you really have no excuse for not having one 07:42 except that you don't care or it's not a priority, but that's 07:44 gonna be, the result will be your relationship with the Lord. 07:49 There's so many opportunities for you to download 07:51 a Bible reading program, a thousand different things. 07:53 You can say, "I want to do a program where I go through the 07:55 Gospels, I want to do a program where I go through the history, 07:58 I want to read through the Bible chronologically, I want to study 08:01 faith, grace, hope," and this is a million different ways you can 08:04 study the Word and be in the Word. 08:06 So to act like, "I don't know how." 08:08 Well, you could if you wanted to. 08:10 If you are hungry, you figure it out. 08:15 And in the last days, when we go through a great time of trouble 08:20 and we're going to be challenged about what we believe we need 08:24 to know how to give an answer to anyone who asks us for 08:28 the reason for the hope that is in us with meekness and fear. 08:32 We need to be able to defend what we believe. 08:34 When Jesus was tempted by the devil in the wilderness 08:37 He didn't say, "Hang on. 08:38 Do you have a Bible somewhere? 08:40 I'll find a promise." 08:41 He had stored the Word in His mind, He right away said, 08:44 "It is written, it is written, it is written." 08:46 Jesus did not memorize and recite Scripture using any 08:50 supernatural power that is above and beyond what is available 08:54 to you. 08:55 The same way He quoted the Bible to the devil is the same way 08:58 you and I can do it. 09:00 He read it at His mother's knee, she taught Him the Word, 09:04 probably learned Scripture songs, He studied it 09:07 as an adult. 09:08 "As His custom was, He went into the synagogue on 09:09 the Sabbath day, He stood up to read the Scriptures." 09:12 Certainly every Sabbath, but then on a daily basis He was a 09:16 storing the Word of God, so when the trials came He had a Word. 09:20 We, if we're gonna be mature, if we're going to be able to fight 09:23 the good fight of faith in the last days, we need to be 09:26 focusing on the Word of God and knowing why we believe 09:29 what we believe. 09:31 And when the devil comes to tempt us, God has, "Given to us 09:34 exceeding great and precious promises, that by these 09:37 we might become partakers of the divine nature." 09:40 Memorize the promises of God. 09:44 "I have treasured the words of His mouth More than my necessary 09:47 food," Job says. 09:49 Jeremiah said, "Your words were found, and I ate them, 09:53 And Your word was to me the joy and rejoicing of my heart." 09:56 Why is the Word so important to someone who falls in love 09:59 with Jesus? 10:02 Christ is the Living Word. 10:05 When you say you love the Bible, we're not talking about 10:08 a bunch of words in a book. 10:09 When you say you love the Bible, you're talking about, 10:11 "I love Christ." 10:14 "The word became flesh and dwelt among us." 10:16 It's really saying, "I love Jesus, I want him in my life." 10:20 If you are hungry for Jesus, what is the most practical thing 10:23 you can do to get Christ in your mind? 10:26 Read His Word. 10:28 Now, we are all feeding our souls, but what are 10:31 we feeding them? 10:33 Isaiah said, chapter 55, verse 2, "Why do you spend your money 10:38 for that which is not bread," and we're spending our money 10:41 but not for the right bread, "And your wages for that 10:44 that does not satisfy? 10:46 Listen carefully to Me, and eat what is good, 10:50 And let your soul delight itself in abundance." 10:52 Isaiah is not talking about food here, he's talking about 10:56 satisfying your soul. 10:58 He said eating the things that will satisfy your soul, 11:01 says you're eating but you're not eating the right thing. 11:06 You know it's interesting in that we're living at a time in 11:08 the world where the World Health Organization says that there is 11:11 a an increasing global hunger, that there are 11% 11:18 of the world's population, seven-plus billion people 11:24 are hungry, and it's growing. 11:25 You would think that with all the food in the world right now 11:27 that wouldn't be. 11:29 And it's especially a paradox, it's ironic right now because 11:31 we're also living at a time, not only where there are millions 11:35 of hungry children, but in prosperous parts of the world 11:40 children are not dying from hunger, they're dying 11:43 from diseases related with over-eating the wrong thing. 11:48 They're eating but they're not eating the good thing. 11:52 That's just like soda pop and sugar and empty calories 11:57 and not a regular schedule. 11:58 And there's an epidemic of type-two diabetes right now. 12:03 Says, "Eat that which is good." 12:04 Well, a lot of Christians are not eating the right thing, 12:06 they're eating junk food, spiritual junk food; where they 12:11 are watching things and if you ask them above the latest 12:14 TV series they know the answers to all those things because 12:19 they are filling their time and their mind with that. 12:21 This is probably one of the most important things we can do 12:24 to make a difference in our spiritual growth. 12:27 male announcer: Don't forget to request today's life-changing 12:30 free resource. 12:31 Not only can you receive this free gift in the mail, 12:33 you can download a digital copy straight to your computer 12:36 or mobile device. 12:37 To get your copy of today's free gift, simply call us and ask 12:41 for the offer number shown on your screen or visit 12:44 the web address and download a digital copy and be sure 12:48 to select the digital download option on the Request page. 12:50 It's now easier than ever for you to study God's Word with 12:54 "Amazing Facts" wherever and whenever you want, 12:57 and most important, to share it with others. 13:02 Doug Batchelor: I'm going to give you several points about 13:03 what you do with the Bible in growing through the Word. 13:07 Hear it, read it, and I want them to support that real quick. 13:12 Revelation chapter 1, verse 3, "Blessed is he who reads and 13:17 those who hear the words of this prophecy, and keep those things 13:22 that are written therein." 13:23 So you've got to read the Word. 13:25 If you can't read, you can hear, I'm hoping you're doing both. 13:27 When you come to church, you not only read but you're hearing 13:30 the Word. 13:32 When I drive in the car I listen to Bible tapes, I listen 13:39 to Christian Radio, we've got the Bible on CD 13:43 and a thousand other ways. 13:45 You can click on an internet site and it'll just read 13:46 the Bible to you now, if you're online. 13:49 But listen to the Word. 13:50 And to some people, they read the Word and I really like 13:53 the way they read it, they do a really good job, they're easy 13:56 to listen to. 13:57 And if you want to learn how to pronounce difficult verses in 14:01 the Bible or words or names or places, listen to some 14:04 of the other experts who are reading it. 14:05 You go, "Oh, that's how you say that." 14:07 But it will do something for you. 14:11 Hear it, read it, write it. 14:15 Heard someone say, "The shortest pencil is longer than 14:19 the longest memory." 14:22 If you take notes when you hear something biblically 14:26 you're gonna remember a lot more. 14:28 You know, if I just preach, right now if I asked you what 14:31 I preached about last month, I bet you there's not 1 in 100 14:33 here who can tell me. 14:36 And if you said, "I knew the subject," and said, "All right, 14:38 tell me some of the sermon," you'd probably be hard 14:42 pressed, right? 14:44 You only remember about 5% or 8% of what you hear within 14:48 two weeks the preacher preached. 14:50 If you write it down it jumps up to like 20%, you'll remember a 14:56 lot more 'cause it stores it in a different part of your brain. 14:59 So if you have a good spiritual thought, write it down. 15:01 I've also found it's not only write it and hear it, 15:07 but say it, share what you've learned with someone else. 15:10 People say, "Pastor Doug, how do you remember so much Scripture?" 15:13 First of all, I don't know very much. 15:16 Jay N. Andrew is one of the founders of our church. 15:19 Someone asked him one time, "Do you have the whole 15:21 Bible memorized?" 15:23 He said, "No," he said, "But if the New Testament was destroyed, 15:26 I could reproduce it." 15:29 Can you imagine that, memorize the whole New Testament? 15:33 They say, "Doug, how do you remember so much Scripture?" 15:35 It's because, involved in evangelism, I'm sharing it with 15:38 others and it's stored just at a different place in my brain 15:41 and I remember it because I've said it. 15:43 So you're not only writing it, you're not only reading it 15:46 but then you're saying it. 15:48 And then finally, he says, "Keep it." 15:50 If you want the Word to come alive after you read something 15:54 then put it into practice. 15:56 Proverbs 4, verse 20, "My son, give attention to my words; 16:01 Incline your ear to my sayings. 16:03 Do not let them depart from your eyes; Keep them in the midst of 16:07 your heart; For they are life to those who find them, 16:10 And health to their flesh." 16:12 Alright, so number one, we grow by eating, number two, 16:15 we grow by breathing. 16:18 You must breathe to live. 16:20 One of the first things that happens with a new birth is 16:24 a doctor wants to make sure of what? 16:26 baby's breathing. 16:28 And I was there when our kids were born and you always kinda 16:32 wait and you're anxious for that first breath, and even if 16:35 there's a little crying at the beginning, does that 16:37 make you sad? 16:38 No, they're alive. 16:41 Right? 16:42 If you don't learn to breathe, prayer, and how often do you 16:47 need to breathe? 16:48 Now you can eat, you know, once or twice a day, you'll be okay, 16:50 but you can't breathe once or twice a day. 16:54 Bible says, "Pray without ceasing," it's like breathing, 16:57 it's absolutely essential. 17:00 Jesus told us, "Ask," and that word ask, He said, 17:03 "Ask, it will be given you." 17:05 That word ask, in Greek, it's a continuation of asking, 17:09 live a life of asking. 17:12 Look at Paul in Ephesians 6:18, "Praying always with all prayer 17:18 and supplication in the Spirit, being watchful to this end 17:22 with all perseverance and supplication 17:24 for all the saints." 17:26 Notice, all-all-all-all, always, "Praying always," an attitude 17:30 of walking with God, this will help you grow. 17:33 You know, they say that, If kids that live in places where they 17:36 just don't have good air, it can actually stunt their growth. 17:40 And fresh air; some of the tallest people in the world live 17:45 in the mountains where they got clean air, both in Scandinavia 17:49 and in Africa, good air, grow; pygmies live in the valley 17:58 of the Congo. 18:00 So you wanna be where you get good air. 18:05 Philippians 4:6, "Be anxious for nothing, but in everything 18:10 by prayer," we're praying about everything, we're praying always 18:13 in supplication; "With thanksgiving," thanksgiving 18:17 should be part of all prayer; "Let your request be made known 18:20 to God; and the peace of God, which surpasses all 18:24 understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Jesus 18:27 Christ," and you will grow. 18:30 Without prayer in the spiritual life, almost quicker than 18:34 anything else, you begin to dry up and die, 18:38 so we need to breathe. 18:39 You need to eat, you need to breathe, you need to exercise. 18:42 You grow through exercise. 18:44 If a baby is eating and if a baby is exercising and they're 18:48 breathing, they don't worry about growing, it's going 18:52 to happen, it will be natural. 18:54 You need to exercise your faith. 18:55 Now how do you do that? 18:56 What does that mean? 18:58 Ephesians 4:15, "But, speaking the truth in love, we may 19:03 grow up in all things into Him." 19:06 One of the ways that you exercise as a Christian is 19:09 you share your faith. 19:10 You realize you can't keep your faith if you don't give it away? 19:14 Christianity is a miracle of life that you get to keep 19:17 by sharing it, you keep it by giving it away. 19:21 That doesn't mean everybody is a preacher, teacher, pastor, 19:24 evangelist, but every believer is called upon to do something 19:29 to share. 19:31 Have you ever seen somebody, you've been talking to them, 19:35 they had a tragic experience 30 years ago? 19:39 I've seen World War II veterans, and they haven't thought about 19:44 it in years and someone will ask them, "Can you please tell me 19:46 what happened at Pearl Harbor or D-Day?" 19:49 And they start to tell the story and they break down and begin 19:52 to cry 'cause they relive the experience. 19:56 When you tell others what Jesus has done for you, you relive 20:00 the experience and it reaffirms it in your own life and 20:04 you will grow in your maturity. 20:07 2 Thessalonians 1:3, "We are bound to give thanks to God 20:11 always for you, brethren, as it is fitting, because your faith 20:14 grows exceedingly," Paul was thanking God because 20:18 they were growing in their faith, 20:20 "And the love of every one of you abounds towards each other." 20:24 Those Thessalonian believers were sharing their faith 20:26 and they were growing as they shared it in their community. 20:30 In Revelation 12:11, "They overcome by the blood 20:33 of the Lamb and the word of their testimony." 20:37 See, we're overcoming by testifying. 20:41 If you will believe in your heart and share with your mouth 20:45 the Lord Jesus Christ, we're to proclaim it, we're to share it 20:47 with others, it does something to seal it in our own lives. 20:52 You know, if you want to be a Christian, you got to get 20:55 right in the middle of it. 20:58 So often people, they stay near the edge. 21:00 It's like they're born again and then they stop, they say, 21:03 "Praise the Lord, I've got eternal life now," 21:06 but they don't grow and they become stunted. 21:10 Years ago, this ship was sailing across the Caribbean, and the 21:18 water was a little rough, the boat was rocking and pretty soon 21:21 one of the series called, "Man overboard." 21:23 Well, back then that was pretty serious because these big old 21:26 ships, it was hard to turn them around, and as it was moving 21:29 along, you know, if there were sharks, 21:32 if the water was too cold. 21:33 And so they hear the cry, "Man overboard." 21:35 You know, someone runs the back of the boat and they could see 21:38 the sailor's off there bobbing in the water, and the captain 21:41 tells them, "Turn the ship around." 21:43 And they turn the ship around, it lumbers around, they lower 21:46 the sails, they let down the lifeboat, they send off a rescue 21:50 party, and they found this wet sailor off there, it was warm 21:53 water, he was okay. 21:55 They hauled him in, they brought him ashore, everybody cheered 21:57 'cause, you know I used to read these stories, a man went 22:00 overboard there was like a 50% chance they'd never get them 22:02 back if it was a cold ocean. 22:06 And so they have there as soon as they said, "Man overboard," 22:08 someone was ready on the stern to throw a rope to them 22:11 right away with a ring on it. 22:13 Well, they get this guy back up in the boat and he's standing 22:15 there leaning against the deck and everybody's rejoicing, 22:17 they're slapping them on the back, and they saved him. 22:21 And they hoist up the sails and they begin on their journey 22:23 again, and pretty soon they hear, "Man overboard." 22:28 Same sailor fell off. 22:31 So he turned the boat around again and, they lower the sails 22:34 and they come up to him and they launched life boat, a lot 22:36 of work involved in all this, and they paddle up to him 22:38 and he's still out there alive. 22:40 They pick them up, they brought him back and the captain said, 22:42 "Brother, what seems to be the problem?" 22:45 He says, "Well, sir, I guess I stayed too close 22:47 to where I got in." 22:51 Some people keep falling out because they stayed too close 22:55 to where they got in. 22:58 Once you accept Christ, don't stay in the crib, don't stay and 23:03 just milk-milk-milk-milk-milk. 23:05 I get tired of it after a while, I don't know about you. 23:09 But we need to continue to grow in the Lord, look for a deeper 23:13 experience, look for more work, bigger challenges in Christ, 23:19 a better view of Him that we might grow in our knowledge. 23:23 You know, they say the fastest growing plant in the world, 23:28 fastest growing thing is the bamboo. 23:32 It it can grow up to 35 inches in a day, and how tall would you 23:38 be today if that's how fast you grew? 23:41 35 inches in a day, that is pretty amazing. 23:45 They actually measure bamboo growth in miles per hour, 23:50 its 0.00002 miles per hour on a good day. 23:58 According to "RHS Dictionary of Gardening," there are 24:01 approximately 1,000 species of bamboo. 24:03 The tallest recorded in the tropics is 130 feet, and the 24:07 amazing thing is bamboo is grass, it's in the grass family. 24:13 But you know why it grows so fast? 24:15 It's in the ideal environment, bamboo doesn't grow that fast in 24:19 the Arctic, it grows near the equator where it's got a lot of 24:24 sun, on islands where they get a lot of rain, they've got 24:28 volcanic soil and the very best of conditions, 24:32 and it grows like crazy. 24:35 Matter of fact, they build everything out of bamboo and 24:37 you go on those parts of the world. 24:40 If you followed the rules, if you take up the keys 24:45 for Christian growth, you're gonna grow. 24:51 male announcer: Don't forget to request today's life-changing 24:53 free resource. 24:55 Not only can you receive this free gift in the mail, you can 24:57 download a digital copy straight to your computer or 25:00 mobile device. 25:01 To get your digital copy of today's free gift, simply text 25:04 the keyword on your screen to 40544, or visit the web address 25:09 shown on your screen and be sure to select the Digital Download 25:12 option on the Request page. 25:14 It's now easier than ever for you to study God's Word with 25:17 "Amazing Facts" wherever and whenever you want, 25:21 and most important, to share it with others. 25:25 male announcer: "Go into all the world and preach the Gospel 25:29 to every creature." 25:30 Through radio, television, print, evangelistic events 25:34 and the internet, "Amazing Facts International" is heeding 25:37 the call of Jesus to go into all the world. 25:40 Millions of individuals in over 150 countries have been blessed 25:44 by the Word of God. 25:46 "Amazing Facts" has spawned new spheres of influence in India, 25:49 Africa, China, and Indonesia. 25:52 With each new country, come hundreds of translated booklets, 25:55 study guides and video presentations produced 25:58 in each region for the people of that region. 26:00 Armed with these precious truths, Gospel workers are 26:03 empowered to spread bright rays of light on every path 26:07 they travel. 26:08 Please visit ReachTheWorld.AmazingFacts.org 26:11 to learn more about "Amazing Facts International" 26:14 and how you can participate in this exciting 26:16 soul-winning ministry. 26:18 That website again is ReachTheWorld.AmazingFacts.org. 26:22 Thank you for your support. 26:27 male announcer: What if you could know the future?
