00:02 male announcer: This presentation is brought to you
00:03 by the friends of the "Amazing Facts" ministry. 00:13 Doug Batchelor: I want to make it clear, you can be a Christian 00:17 in one day, you can be a Christian in 10 minutes, but 00:22 just because you've been a Christian does not mean you're 00:24 growing in Christ. 00:29 Doug Batchelor: I'd like to begin by just sharing a little 00:31 amazing fact. 00:33 You know, we like amazing facts here. 00:36 The bristlecone pine that you find in the White Mountains of 00:41 California, is the longest living tree in the world. 00:45 And dendrochronologists have done a couple of core samples 00:49 and they found one that they believe was over 5,000 00:52 years old. 00:54 Now, they can't always tell exactly because the lines in the 00:56 tree might sometimes be caused by several changes in one 01:01 season, but generally they represent a year. 01:05 And they have some of these trees they think that date back 01:07 about 5,000 years. 01:09 The interesting thing is, as old as these trees are, they don't 01:14 get very tall, they grow very slowly. 01:20 A 20 year-old ponderosa pine is taller than a 2,000 year old 01:27 bristlecone pine. 01:30 Now, how are you growing as a Christian? 01:32 Are you a ponderosa or bristlecone? 01:36 The Lord wants us to grow and He wants us to bear fruit. 01:40 And Bible tells us in 2 Peter chapter 3, verse 18, "But grow 01:46 in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior 01:49 Jesus Christ. 01:50 To Him be the glory both now and forever." 01:54 I want to make it clear, you can be a Christian in one day, you 01:59 can be a Christian in 10 minutes, you can be justified 02:04 very quickly by accepting Jesus and understanding 02:08 that commitment. 02:09 But growth is something that is going to take time, it's 02:13 something that happens in a process the Lord has naturally 02:16 built into our lives, we call it the process of sanctification. 02:20 But some people except Christ and then they don't do the 02:23 growing part. 02:26 A.W. 02:27 Tozer said, "Some people find themselves in religious ruts, 02:30 they find they're getting older but they're not getting holier. 02:33 Time is their enemy, not their friend." 02:37 And so just because you've been a Christian a long time does not 02:39 mean you're growing in Christ, it's so crucial. 02:43 Now, let me quickly review the first three keys that we talked 02:47 about that are important for a baby to grow. 02:51 First of all, we grow by eating good food. 02:53 What is the food? 02:55 It's Word of God. 02:56 "Man doesn't live by bread alone, but by every Word." 02:59 Do you feast on the Word? 03:00 Jesus said, "Give us this day our daily bread." 03:03 Do you, on a regular basis, read His Word? 03:07 "As newborn babes, desire the pure milk of the Word, that you 03:12 may grow thereby." 03:14 That can't be misunderstood. 03:15 If you want to grow you need to be feeding on the Word of God; 03:20 not only is it called milk, the Word of God is called meat, it's 03:23 called honey. 03:24 The law of the Lord is like the honey and the honeycomb. 03:28 So are you reading the Bible, do you have regular devotions? 03:31 Another way a baby grows is by breathing. 03:35 What does the breathing represent? 03:37 Prayer, prayer is the breath of the soul. 03:41 Three, we grow by exercise. 03:45 A baby, if they're just handcuffed in a crib, they're 03:48 not going to grow, they wiggle and they scoot and they move, 03:51 and we're so excited when they finally roll over, and they get 03:54 into the combat crawl and start doing that lunge forward. 03:57 Finally, they get up on all four and we're just praising them, 04:01 we're so excited, and when they can take a few steps on 04:03 two feet. 04:04 Through all that exercise and activity it helps them grow, and 04:09 part of the wiggling and the squirming is part of the 04:11 growing process. 04:14 Don't be afraid if sometimes the growing is slow, but be afraid 04:18 of standing still. 04:20 Have you ever seen kids, it's like they don't grow. 04:23 I know Daniel, he was so short until he, you know, got to be 04:27 like 13, and then he just shot up and now he's about six feet. 04:33 And so some times the growth happens in spurts. 04:37 Have you seen that? 04:38 And do you know something else about growing? 04:41 You ever have growing pains? 04:44 I remember one of our kids just aching and knees were hurting, 04:48 and my grandmother told me an old wives' tale that if you tie 04:50 a sock around the ankle it helps, and it seemed to work. 04:53 I don't know if it was a placebo effect but we did it anyway. 04:57 But growing pains, but to grow you need to exercise. 05:03 Now, we're taking up where we left off last week and I've just 05:05 got four more here. 05:08 In order to grow we need to be connected with a family. 05:11 God designed that babies are not born out in the woods like 05:14 mushrooms, they are born into families, where they have a 05:17 mother and a father and they get the nurture, and we need the 05:21 social relationship. 05:24 Acts chapter 2:42, "They continued steadfastly in the 05:27 apostles' doctrine and fellowship, breaking bread, and 05:31 in prayers." 05:32 They were together in fellowship. 05:34 If you want to grow you cannot be a maverick Christian, just 05:38 out there on your own. 05:40 Now, there are some people, because of the geography and the 05:43 culture there in, that Christianity's not allowed, and 05:46 God will sustain them but it is so much better when you can 05:50 fellowship with other believers. 05:52 It helps you prevent becoming an eccentric, and take it from 05:56 someone who lived in a cave. 05:58 They used to have these ascetics and they thought, "In order to 06:01 be holy, you must be isolated from all people." 06:04 And like Simeon Stylite, he lived up on a pillar by himself 06:08 because he was trying to stay away from the people so he 06:11 wouldn't be contaminated or something, or be holier, could 06:14 think more about God without distractions. 06:16 There are days that sounds appealing, doesn't it? 06:20 I'd like to, like David said, if I could just make wings like a 06:23 bird and fly away, be by myself, and I could be close to God and 06:27 none of the temptations, not none but none of the typical 06:30 temptations that come from being in the world. 06:33 But Jesus didn't call us to be isolated, it says He wants us to 06:38 be together. 06:39 Hebrews 10, verse 24, "And let us consider one another," notice 06:43 that phrase, "In order to stir up love and good works." 06:48 How do we do that? 06:49 By being together, "Not forsaking the assembling of 06:53 ourselves together, as the manner of some is." 06:56 It was a problem even back in Paul's day, where people were 06:58 neglecting to assemble together, and what's the most important 07:01 time in the week to assemble together? 07:03 Sabbath Day. 07:05 It's okay to get together in small groups, we should be doing 07:07 it through the week, but the Sabbath is called a 07:11 holy convocation. 07:13 That word there, Leviticus 23, means a convening, an 07:15 assembly, a coming together. 07:18 And you know, it happens slowly, people, they miss one weekend, 07:23 say, "I was really tired so I slept this one in, you know, God 07:26 knows I needed rest." 07:27 And then you find out they make it two or three weeks and then 07:29 they miss two weeks. 07:31 Then they'll make it for two weeks, 07:32 then they miss three weeks. 07:34 It doesn't happen quickly but they start missing and then, you 07:37 know, then you're really at risk if we don't have that 07:41 time together. 07:42 I think over 140 times in the Bible, New and Old Testament, 07:47 you'll find the phrase, "One another." 07:50 I did just a clinical computer search on it and it was about 07:54 146 times, "One another, one another, one another." 07:57 In the New Testament it says, "Love one another," "Serve one 08:02 another," "Comfort one another." 08:04 It's really hard for you to be doing all that by yourself. 08:08 Isn't that right? 08:09 So we need to be spending time together. 08:13 You know why? 08:14 To grow, and also for your own safety. 08:18 You know, when the devil gets the sheep, like a wolf, is when 08:25 they're on the fringes of the flock and he can pick them off. 08:30 There was a curse pronounced by Moses on Amalek. 08:33 You know why? 08:34 'Cause Amalek, when the children of Israel crossed the Red Sea 08:36 and they came out, and they were young and they were old and 08:39 they were weak and they were strong, and the 08:42 Amalekites attacked. 08:43 Let me read it to you, Deuteronomy 25:18, Amalek, 08:47 "Attacked your rear ranks, all the stragglers at your rear," 08:52 the weak ones on the fringes. 08:54 If you want to be safe, you want to be off there in the middle. 08:57 I'm fascinated with the way that these Emperor Penguins survive 09:01 in Antarctica, it is the most blistering cold. 09:05 That's an oxymoron, isn't it? 09:09 The weather is just brutal, 60 below zero, and all of 09:14 those--the male penguins are pretty dedicated, you know? 09:17 The female lays an egg, plops it on his feet, and then all the 09:21 males, they put the egg under their belly fat and they keep it 09:25 warm, up to 100 degrees. 09:28 They keep the egg 100 degrees even though it's 60 below zero. 09:31 The way they do that is they keep it off the ice on their 09:33 feet, they cover it with themselves and they huddle 09:36 together, and they all rotate in the middle, they're all fighting 09:39 to get in the middle of the huddle 'cause then you're 09:42 protected from the elements. 09:44 Fish, why do they swim in a school? 09:47 Because they're weak by themselves but when they're in a 09:49 school they can dazzle and daze their predator enemies and they 09:53 don't know which one to focus on. 09:54 And if I was a fish, if I was a sardine, have you ever thought 09:58 about this? 10:01 If I was a sardine, I'd be looking for the middle of the 10:04 school, wouldn't you? 10:07 And if you want to be safe from the devil, get in the middle of 10:09 the church, get involved, get right out in the middle of it, 10:12 get elbow deep in the dishes or whatever you gotta do, potluck, 10:15 but get in the middle and we need one another. 10:19 If you want to grow as a baby, stay in a family. 10:22 Key number five, rest. 10:26 Now, some people think, "How do you grow by resting?" 10:28 That's a fact, you need rest to grow. 10:33 Dr. Cara Natterson, pediatrician, graduated Johns 10:36 Hopkins and Harvard, said, "For children, sleep is critical as 10:42 an ingredient to good growth." 10:45 A lot of the growing, your body is not stagnant when you're 10:49 sleeping, it's actually very active, lot of processes 10:51 going on. 10:53 There's repairing that's going on, there's cell multiplication 10:55 that's going on, you're growing. 10:58 And they've actually shown that growth can be stunted by a lack 11:02 of rest, healing can be hampered by a lack of rest. 11:07 So to grow we need rest. 11:08 Psalm 37:7, "Rest in the Lord and wait patiently for Him." 11:13 Every Sabbath Day, I hope we do some growing spiritually and I 11:18 hope we do some resting and I hope we're growing while 11:21 we're resting. 11:22 It's not just talking about sleep, Jesus wants us to rest 11:26 in faith. 11:28 Matthew 6:27, "Which of you by worrying can add a cubit to 11:32 his stature?" 11:34 Can you worry yourself taller? 11:38 So one of the things to do to grow as a Christian is trust the 11:41 Lord that you will grow. 11:43 You know, you get what you believe. 11:45 The Bible says, "Be it unto you according to your faith." 11:48 So after I did the first message on growth, some of you probably 11:51 came away feeling guilty because you haven't grown more. 11:54 Trust that, if you do the things that you're saying, you're 11:56 going to grow; babies don't worry about growing but they do 12:01 receive the things that we're talking about. 12:03 Mark 11, verse 22, "Jesus answered and said, 'Have faith 12:07 in God. 12:08 For assuredly, I say to you, whoever says to this mountain, 12:11 "Be removed and cast into the sea," and does not doubt in his 12:15 heart, but believes that those things he says will be done, he 12:18 will have whatever he says. 12:20 Therefore I say to you, whatever things you ask for when you 12:23 pray, believe that you receive them,'" trust God, rest in His 12:26 promises, and He said, "You will have them." 12:30 If you're worried about not growing ask God to move that 12:33 mountain and help you start growing, and believe that 12:36 He will. 12:38 Faith will lead to answered prayer and answered prayer will 12:41 lead to greater faith, that's the way it works. 12:45 If your faith is small, you say, "Oh Lord, I've just got a 12:47 little faith." 12:48 There's a man that came to Jesus one day and said, "Lord, I 12:51 believe, but help my unbelief." 12:54 And Jesus could answer that prayer, He healed his son. 12:58 male announcer: Don't forget to request today's life-changing 13:00 free resource. 13:02 Not only can you receive this free gift in the mail, you can 13:04 download a digital copy straight to your computer or 13:07 mobile device. 13:08 To get your copy of today's free gift, simply call us and ask for 13:12 the offer number shown on your screen, or visit the web address 13:15 and download a digital copy and be sure to select the Digital 13:19 Download option on the Request page. 13:21 It's now easier than ever for you to study God's Word with 13:24 "Amazing Facts" wherever and whenever you want, and most 13:28 important, to share it with others. 13:32 Doug Batchelor: Key number six, I came up with seven keys here 13:35 to growing as a Christian, is you need regular cleansing. 13:40 A baby, as cute as they are, do need an occasional cleansing. 13:44 Amen? 13:45 They don't worry about it, they trust that their parents are 13:47 going to help them with that. 13:49 Sometimes they worry if it doesn't happen quick enough, and 13:51 you'll hear about it, some don't care so much. 13:58 1 John 1:8, 14:00 "If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, 14:03 and the truth is not in us. 14:05 If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us 14:10 our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. 14:15 If we say that we've not sinned, we make Him a liar, and His word 14:18 is not in us." 14:20 So as soon as we recognize that we've fallen, confess 14:24 it quickly. 14:25 Someone said you, "Keep short accounts with the Lord," don't 14:28 let your guilt and shame pile up. 14:30 As soon as you recognize that you've slipped or fallen, bring 14:34 it to the Lord, ask Him to heal, to forgive, to cleanse, and His 14:38 promise is He will. 14:39 Amen? 14:41 "Confess your trespasses to one another, and pray for 14:44 one another." 14:45 You know, this is, again, part of that church family, is that 14:49 they're strength and intercession with each other for 14:52 that cleansing. 14:54 And then point number seven is you grow in love. 15:00 You know children actually grow better in a loving environment, 15:04 and we grow in the love of God. 15:07 I remember reading about this great Greek hero of the 15:11 Olympics, his name was Milo of Croton and they said he was the 15:16 strongest man who had ever lived, and he could put a 15:20 pomegranate in his hand, is one of the many legends, and any 15:24 other man could try to take the pomegranate out of his hand and 15:27 they couldn't even damage the pomegranate 'cause his hand was 15:29 so strong. 15:31 They said that he was so strong that he could put a metal band 15:37 on his head, he'd tightened his muscles, he could pop it off his 15:40 head with just the veins. 15:43 I said it was a legend. 15:46 Supposedly, you know how he got so strong? 15:49 When he was a teenager, he was given a calf, and he loved the 15:53 calf and he picked the calf up and he put it on his shoulders 15:56 everyday and carried it around, and he did that for 4 years, 16:01 every day he'd hoist the calf. 16:02 He was growing as a teenager and the calf was growing, and pretty 16:06 soon he was known as the boy who could pick up a bull and carry 16:10 it around. 16:12 And he entered the Olympics and he won for nine years as the 16:16 best wrestler, least that's the story. 16:19 So, love, practicing, exercising love makes you grow 16:25 to be more like Christ. 16:26 Now, how many of you want more love? 16:29 Do you develop more love by living on an island by yourself? 16:36 No, love must be shared to be experienced. 16:40 That's one reason that, in order for God to have been eternal 16:44 God, God needed to be the three persons. 16:48 'Cause how could God be love and have no one to love? 16:52 But if God is the only one that is eternal, in order for Him to 16:56 be eternal God there must be more than one person or you 16:59 can't express your love. 17:01 Did you get that? 17:03 That make sense? 17:04 But the Father, Son and Spirit are eternal. 17:07 In order for us to love, it must be expressed. 17:10 In the last days, one of the problems is that people's love 17:14 is not growing. 17:15 Notice Matthew 24:12, "Because lawlessness will abound, the 17:19 love of many will grow," the wrong way, grows cold. 17:23 So love can grow, it can grow warm and it can grow cold. 17:27 2 Thessalonians 1:3, "We are bound to thank God always for 17:31 you, brethren, as it is fitting, because your faith grows 17:35 exceedingly, and the love of every one of you abounds towards 17:40 each other." 17:42 There's a beautiful example, and I can repeat again, Ephesians 17:44 4:15, "But, speaking the truth in love, that we may grow up in 17:50 all things into Him who is the head-- Christ." 17:55 "When I was a child, I spoke as a child, I understood as a 17:58 child, I thought as a child;" 1 Corinthians 13, "But when I 18:02 became a man." 18:03 How'd you go from child to man? 18:05 You grew, and you grow in your love. 18:10 And he says, "Now abides faith, hope, love, these three; but," 18:14 what's the greatest? 18:16 "Greatest of these is love." 18:18 God is love, and most beautiful thing of Christ we can imitate 18:21 is His love. 18:22 So, in conclusion, I want to ask, how do you know if 18:25 you're growing? 18:27 I mean, does God give us a Bible metric? 18:29 He says, "Examine yourselves if you're in the faith." 18:33 Well, do you know by the fruits? 18:37 Jesus said, "You'll know them by their fruits," and you'll have 18:41 the fruits of the Spirit. 18:42 I've got seven questions you can ask. 18:47 For one thing, Jesus came to save you from your sin. 18:51 Does sin in your life have dominion over you? 18:55 Are you addicted to anything other than Jesus? 18:58 You can't be a healthy Christian, plain and simple. 19:00 I don't mean the occasional moral failure, the Bible says, 19:03 "For there is none that does not sin." 19:05 What we're talking about is where Paul says, "Sin shall not 19:08 have dominion over you." 19:11 Hebrews 12:1, "Therefore... 19:13 since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let 19:16 us lay aside every weight, and the sin that so easily 19:19 ensnares us." 19:21 How do we do this? 19:22 We run the race by fixing our eyes on Jesus, 19:24 the Author and Finisher of our faith. 19:28 Pray that God will give you victory. 19:30 Second point, have you forgiven others? 19:33 Are you growing? 19:34 Have you forgiven others that hurt you? 19:36 Are you easily offended? 19:37 Do you nurse a grudge? 19:39 Do you stay bitter? 19:41 Do you think about vengeance? 19:42 You're growing as a Christian when you can quickly slough 19:45 off offenses. 19:47 Ephesians 4:32, "Be kind to one another, tenderhearted, 19:52 forgiving one another, even as God for Christ's sake has 19:56 forgiven you." 19:57 How does He want us to forgive? 19:59 As Jesus forgave us. 20:01 Growth means we're growing to be like Christ. 20:05 Point three, are you sharing your faith? 20:08 Part of growth means to share it. 20:12 Jesus said, "If anyone ashamed of Me and My words in this 20:15 adulterous generation, the Son of Man will be ashamed of him," 20:19 "But if you confess Me, I will confess you." 20:23 That's a sign of growth. 20:25 Are you bearing the fruits of the Spirit? 20:28 Are you new creatures? 20:30 Galatians 5:22 has some of the best definition, "But the fruit 20:34 of the Spirit is love, joy, peace." 20:38 Do you have these in your life? 20:39 "Longsuffering," that's patience, "kindness." 20:41 Are you kind? 20:43 "Goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control. 20:49 Against such there is no law." 20:52 Peter puts it this way, 2 Peter 1, verse 5, "But also for this 20:57 very reason, giving all diligence, add to your faith 21:01 virtue," notice there's an addition happening here, "To 21:04 virtue knowledge, to knowledge self-control," this is a 21:08 progression, as you get the knowledge and then you gain 21:11 self-control, "to self-control perseverance, to perseverance 21:15 godliness, to godliness brotherly kindness, to brotherly 21:20 kindness love. 21:22 For if these things are yours and they abound, you will be 21:26 neither barren nor unfruitful." 21:29 You want to be fruitful? 21:31 Then ask by God's grace and through his Spirit to add the 21:33 Christian virtues that you can imitate Jesus. 21:38 Test number five, do you have regular time with God in prayer 21:41 and the study of His Word? 21:44 Good time with God is not found, it's made, you got to choose to 21:48 make it. 21:49 You're not just, if you're waiting for it to happen on its 21:51 own, it doesn't work that way, set aside time with God. 21:56 1 Timothy 4:13, "Till I come, give attention to reading, to 22:00 exhortation, to doctrine." 22:02 1 Thessalonians, as I read before, "Pray without ceasing." 22:08 Daniel, three times a day, as his custom was, he knelt and he 22:11 prayed and he studied God's Word. 22:15 Six, are you generous towards God and man? 22:18 This is a test, you can sometimes tell if a person is 22:21 growing by their faith and their generosity. 22:25 Proverbs 3, verse 9, "Honor the Lord with your possessions, And 22:29 with the firstfruits of all of your increase." 22:32 Are we faithful in tithes and offerings? 22:35 Do you care about others in need? 22:36 Proverbs 28:27, "He who gives to the poor will not lack, But he 22:42 who hides his eyes will have many curses." 22:45 So we want to be growing in our generosity and trusting God. 22:50 Are we cheerful givers? 22:51 Number seven, are you experiencing spiritual growth? 22:55 Looking back over the past, can you identify progress? 22:59 Do you see where you were tested, and by God's grace you 23:02 were winning?
