01:12 God bless. 01:14 ♪♪♪ 01:18 Doug: We're continuing with the second part in a series where 01:22 we're talking about "When Satan Goes to Church." 01:27 Now, when we're talking about the devil in church, that always 01:31 sounds like it's a paradox, it sounds like an oxymoron, 01:36 but the devil actually started in church. 01:40 The Bible tells us that he was right there by the throne of God 01:43 from his creation. 01:45 You can read in Ezekiel 28, "You were the anointed cherub who 01:50 covers; I established you; You were on the holy mountain 01:55 of God; You walk back and forth in the midst of fiery stones." 01:59 And that fiery stone is talking about the blazing stones, 02:02 the glory of God. 02:05 Jesus, who of course lived before His incarnation, He said, 02:08 Luke chapter 10:18, "I saw Satan fall like lightning 02:13 from heaven." 02:15 There was a war in heaven and Satan was cast out of heaven. 02:19 The devil knows about going to church, and he wants to get back 02:22 to church, did you know that? 02:25 Well, let's talk a little bit about the disguise of the devil. 02:29 And this was our Scripture reading last week, Acts 20, 02:32 if you have your Bibles, Acts 20, verse 29 and 30. 02:37 Paul is giving some admonition to believers in Asia, he knows 02:43 it's probably the last time he's gonna see them. 02:46 And he says, "For I know this, that after my departure savage 02:52 wolves will come in among you, not sparing the flock," 02:57 wolves among the flock. 02:59 "Also from among your own selves men will arise, speaking 03:04 perverse things, to draw away disciples after themselves." 03:09 Now, you notice something, Paul says, "After my departure." 03:11 Why after his departure? 03:14 If you look in the previous verse, I think it's verse 27, 03:16 Paul says, "I have not neglected to declare unto you 03:19 the whole counsel of God." 03:22 Paul is saying, "As long as I'm here, I know what the devil's up 03:25 to, I know what he looks like, and I'm preaching the whole 03:29 counsel of God, you're gonna be safe. 03:30 But after my departure, there's other teachers that are going to 03:35 come in, and there's a risk that you will be confused when 03:41 these wolves come in." 03:43 Matthew 13, Jesus gave them a parable, "The kingdom of heaven 03:47 is like a man who sowed good seed in his field; but while men 03:51 slept, his enemy came." 03:53 Now, who's the enemy? 03:55 "The enemy came and he sowed tares among the wheat." 03:59 Tares, I remember, first read that and I thought, 04:01 "What's a tare?" 04:02 I thought it was a rip in your clothes. 04:04 A tare is an old word for a weed that resembles wheat when 04:11 it's little. 04:12 Do you know that when you were very young, very, very young, 04:18 your parents could not tell the difference between you and 04:21 a frog? 04:23 Now, I'm talking about like when you were a single cell, or even 04:27 if you were two cells. 04:30 And even after a week or two, if you look at the little embryos 04:35 under a microscope of a frog or different creatures, they all 04:39 look pretty much the same, it's hard to tell the difference 04:44 between a little puppy and a snake when they're really small. 04:50 But then, as they get bigger, and wheat, when it first springs 04:53 from the ground, looks very much like tares, and the devil, 04:58 he sows his tares among the wheat. 05:02 And the servants come to the master and they say, "It looks 05:04 like there's some tears sown among the wheat. 05:06 Do you want us to go pull them up?" 05:08 And the master says, "No, no, no, because they're so similar, 05:11 you're gonna accidentally pull up some wheat." 05:15 Sometimes, you and I think we know the difference between 05:17 the wheat and the tares, but only God knows the heart. 05:22 If you asked the religious leaders to pull the weeds out 05:25 of the early church, they would have got rid of Mary Magdalene 05:27 and Peter right away, right? 05:31 And they would have probably promoted Judas. 05:34 So we got to be careful when it comes to separating the wheat 05:36 and the tares because it's sometimes hard to tell, 05:39 the devil is sneaky in the church. 05:44 2 Corinthians 11:13-15, "Such are false apostles, deceitful 05:50 workers, transforming themselves into the apostles of Christ. 05:55 And no wonder! 05:57 For Satan himself transforms himself into an angel of light." 06:02 When the devil came to tempt Jesus in the wilderness, do you 06:05 think that he plopped down on the ground with bat wings 06:08 and red leotards and a goatee and Calvin Klein suit? 06:17 No, he looked like a beautiful angel, he can transform himself 06:22 into an angel of light. 06:24 "And no wonder!" 06:25 It says, "Therefore it is not a great thing if his ministers 06:29 transform themselves into ministers of righteousness, 06:33 whose end will be according to their works." 06:37 So you've got the disguise of the devil, then you got 06:41 the deceptions of the devil, that would seem pretty obvious, 06:45 the deceptions of the devil. 06:46 But I want you to notice, Revelation 12, verse 9, "So the 06:50 great dragon was cast out, that serpent of old, called the devil 06:54 and Satan, who deceives the whole world; he was cast 06:59 to the earth, and his angels were cast out with him." 07:01 So you've got the devil and his angels that are doing what? 07:04 They're deceiving the whole world, but it's not just 07:07 the world on the outside that's being deceived. 07:09 Look in 1 Timothy 4:1. 07:11 "Now the Spirit speaks expressly saying in the latter times 07:15 some will depart from the faith." 07:17 These are who? 07:18 People in the faith, "Giving heed to seducing spirits 07:22 and doctrines of devils." 07:24 It says they will be deceived, deceiving spirits, not just the 07:29 world being deceived, but people in the church being deceived, 07:33 by what? 07:35 "Doctrines of devils." 07:36 You know, for every truth of God, the devil 07:38 has a counterfeit. 07:40 Notice this, Satan has his own trinity. 07:44 You read in Revelation 16:13, The dragon, the beast and 07:46 the false prophet, where we have the Father, Son and Holy Spirit. 07:50 He has his own church, Revelation 2:9, it's called the, 07:54 "Synagogue of Satan." 07:55 These are exact phrases. 07:57 He's got his own theology, 1 Timothy 4:1, 08:00 "The doctrines of demons." 08:03 He has his own ministers, 2 Corinthians 11:4-5, and 08:07 verse 15, says they're called ministers of Satan, 08:11 they've graduated from his seminary. 08:15 He's got his own gospel, Galatians 1:9 calls it 08:18 the accursed gospel. 08:21 He's got his own sacrificial system, Paul says in 08:24 1 Corinthians 10, "The Gentiles sacrifice...to demons." 08:29 He has his own communion service, 1 Corinthians 10:21, 08:33 Paul says, "The cup of demons," and, "The table of demons." 08:39 He has his own unholy spirit, I can't call it his own 08:42 Holy Spirit, because he's obviously not holy, but it says 08:45 that it's the spirit of an unclean demon. 08:49 He's got his own throne, given to him by the dragon, 08:51 Revelation 13:2. 08:53 He's got his own worshipers, look at Revelation 13. 08:57 Devil's got his own complete system of theology, his church, 09:01 his ministers, and he deceives people. 09:04 There's so many that think they're serving the Lord, 09:06 and they're serving the devil. 09:08 Then you got the dialogue of the devil. 09:14 A hunter was out in the woods and he encountered a great big 09:18 bear, and he leveled his gun was, ready to fire, and the bear 09:21 put his hands up in the air. 09:24 He said, "Wait, let's talk about this." 09:26 Well, the hunter had never heard a bear talk to him before, 09:31 and the hunter said, "What's to talk about?" 09:33 He said, "It doesn't need to end this way." 09:36 He said, "We can negotiate." 09:39 The bear said, "What do you want?" 09:41 So, the hunter said, "I don't know how we can negotiate this," 09:43 he said, "I want a warm bear-fur coat." 09:49 The bear said, "We can make that happen." 09:52 Hunter said, "What do you want?" 09:54 He said, "I'm just hungry, I'm looking for a meal." 09:57 He said, "Well, there's some rocks here, let's sit down, 09:59 let's talk about it." 10:01 So, the hunter, cautiously, he went and sat down on the rock 10:04 and the bear sat down across from him, and they talked 10:07 a little while. 10:09 And then the bear walked away happy, and left the hunter's gun 10:13 there on the ground. 10:15 They had come to an agreement, the bear had a full stomach and 10:21 the hunter had a bear-fur coat, because the bear ate him, 10:28 in case you didn't figure that out. 10:31 Some people are still sitting there, going. 10:36 How did it happen? 10:38 They're talking. 10:41 How did we get into trouble? 10:43 Genesis 3, "Now the serpent was more cunning than any beast of 10:48 the field that the Lord God had made. 10:50 And he said to the woman," "Hi, beautiful, hey there." 10:55 Actually, in the original Hebrew, it's a greeting like, 10:57 "Hi there." 11:00 He said, "Has God indeed said, 'You shall not eat from 11:04 every tree in the garden'?" 11:05 "Let's talk about this," he engaged her to discuss what God 11:11 had commanded, and God doesn't want us to just dialogue 11:16 about His will as much as He wants us to obey His will. 11:20 A lot of people think talking about theology is different from 11:22 living it. 11:24 You don't want to get involved in a discussion with the devil 11:27 because you can rationalize anything if you talk 11:31 to the enemy. 11:32 Satan convinced one-third of the holy angels to trust him 11:36 instead of the Lord. 11:37 Matthew 16:22, Jesus told the apostles, He said, "I'm going 11:41 to Jerusalem, I'm going to die, I'll rise the third day." 11:44 Peter said, "Lord, can we have a word? 11:45 Come over here, I wanna talk to You a little bit." 11:49 And Peter said, "Jesus, far be it from You; this shall not 11:53 happen to You!" 11:54 You know what Jesus said to Peter? 11:56 "Get behind Me, Satan." 12:00 The devil was using even someone close to the Lord to try to talk 12:03 Him out of going to the cross. 12:07 It reminds us that even good leaders make mistakes. 12:09 Jude verse 9, there's only one chapter in Jude, verse 9, 12:14 "Michael the archangel, in contending with the devil, when 12:17 he disputed." 12:19 You know what a dispute is? 12:20 He wanted to do engagement him in an argument, a dispute. 12:23 And the devil's saying Michael is coming to resurrect Moses, 12:29 and the devil said, "No, no, you can't take him, he sinned, 12:32 he lost his temper, he murdered someone and hid him in the sand. 12:37 You can't take him." 12:40 And it says that Michael would not even engage him, he says, 12:44 "The Lord rebuke you!" 12:46 That's it. 12:48 Don't get into a discussion with the devil. 12:53 Then you've got the derision of the devil, that's as close as I 12:58 could get to the word "meanness," the derision. 13:02 You remember the story, Luke 9:51, "Now it came to pass, when 13:07 the time had come for Jesus to be received up, He steadfastly 13:11 set His face to go to Jerusalem." 13:13 Jesus is on His way to worship at the feast, "And He sent some 13:17 of His messengers before Him. 13:19 And they went into a village of Samaritans, to prepare for Him." 13:21 They said, "It's a long journey, is there an inn, a place where 13:24 the Master can stay?" 13:25 They said, "Oh, you're going down to Jerusalem to worship? 13:28 We don't worship in Jerusalem, we worship in Mount Gerizim. 13:31 If He's going to Jerusalem, then don't even bother 13:33 stopping here." 13:34 You remember His discussion with the Samaritan woman? 13:36 The Samaritans did not worship in Jerusalem, they worshiped at 13:38 a different temple, and they said, "If He's going to worship 13:41 there, don't even come." 13:43 That made the disciples so angry, listen to what James 13:46 and John said. 13:47 It said, "They didn't receive Him, because His face was set 13:49 to journey to Jerusalem. 13:51 And His disciples James and John," nicknamed Sons of 13:54 Thunder, "They saw this, they said, 'Lord, do you want us to 13:58 command fire to come down from heaven and burden them, up just 14:02 like Elijah did?'" 14:03 They had a verse. 14:05 And Jesus said, "You don't know what manner of spirit you 14:09 are of." 14:11 Well, if it wasn't God's Spirit, what spirit was it? 14:15 Just think about that, here they are, two church leaders, and 14:19 they said, "Lord, they're not treating You right, let's 14:22 get even. 14:24 If we can't wait for them to go to hell, we're gonna bring hell 14:26 to them, give us the power, we will call fire down and burn up 14:30 the whole town." 14:33 You can see what Jesus, He had His hands full, didn't He tried 14:36 to teach these guys? 14:39 You wonder, "How did the church ever get to the place where, 14:42 a couple of 100 years after Christ, they were torturing 14:45 people that did not accept Jesus? 14:49 How did the church get to the place where they were having 14:52 witch trials, and drowning and burning people, in the name 14:55 of Jesus?" 14:57 Because the devil knows how to get into church with people that 15:02 just aren't converted. 15:04 So you got the derision of the devil. 15:11 I'm gonna pause here, and now I want to give you some 15:13 of the answers. 15:15 How do you defeat the devil? 15:17 Three things, be consecrated, be clothed, be courageous, maybe 15:24 I'll add a fourth, be confident. 15:27 Be consecrated, James 4:7, "Therefore submit to God. 15:32 Resist the devil and he will flee from you." 15:35 One of the most important things first is submit, surrender to 15:39 God, we do that on our knees. 15:41 You are never stronger, in fighting the devil, when you are 15:45 on your knees. 15:46 Do you know how hard it is to sin and pray at the same time? 15:49 If you're praying for victory, God is gonna empty heaven with 15:54 angels to help you, rather than see you fall, if you're turning 15:57 to Him. 15:59 Submit to God, you cannot resist the devil until you submit to 16:01 God, you can't do it with your brilliance. 16:04 Don't argue with Him, He's a lot smarter than you, you must 16:08 humble yourself, recognize your weakness, you're never stronger 16:11 than when you know how weak you are. 16:13 Submit to the Lord in prayer. 16:15 You know, one time this man had a son that was a demon possessed 16:18 and the disciples couldn't cast him out, and they said, "Lord, 16:21 what's the problem?" 16:22 He said, "This kind does not come out except by prayer 16:25 and fasting." 16:27 So, be consecrated, secondly, be clothed. 16:32 Now, you know this one, what do you wear? 16:35 Ephesians 6, verse 10, "Finally, brethren, be strong in the Lord 16:40 and the power of His might. 16:41 Put on the whole armor of God, that you might be able to stand 16:46 against the wiles of the devil." 16:48 So, how do we stand? 16:50 Standing is like in a fight, you're standing, you put on 16:53 the armor of God. 16:55 And then he itemizes what that is, "We don't wrestle against 16:59 flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, 17:02 against the rulers of darkness of this age, against spiritual 17:05 hosts of wickedness in heavenly places." 17:08 We are fighting a spiritual battle, we must put on the 17:11 spiritual armor. 17:13 "Therefore take up the whole armor of God, that you might be 17:16 able to withstand in the evil day," meaning the day of 17:20 temptation, "Having done all, to stand." 17:22 And then he itemizes, of course, the breastplate of 17:25 righteousness, and the helmet of salvation, and be girdled with 17:29 the truth, and have the gospel shoes on your feet, and 17:31 the sword of the Spirit, which is the Word of God. 17:34 And then he says, "And with all prayer." 17:37 And all those things, of course, the sword of the Spirit, 17:39 the Word of God, is one of the most important things. 17:41 This is how Jesus met every temptation, He said, "It is 17:44 written, it is written, it is written." 17:48 Alright, well, I said be consecrated, be clothed, 17:50 be courageous. 17:52 Have you noticed how many times in the Bible it says, "Rebuke 17:56 the devil," "Resist the devil"? 17:58 We just read where James says, "Therefore submit to God. 18:00 Resist." 18:02 There's a fight, be courageous, resist him, sometimes the devil 18:05 must be dealt with head-on. 18:08 Romans 16:20, "And the God of peace will crush Satan under 18:13 your feet shortly." 18:15 The Bible says, "You will tread on the serpent, you will 18:18 defeat lions." 18:19 One of the two symbols of the devil, lions and the serpent. 18:25 And you do those things, and He can deliver you. 18:29 So, how does the devil get into the church? 18:34 I wrote a little poem this morning. 18:37 "How does the devil enter the church? 18:40 It's not through the windows or door, it's not through 18:43 the plumbing, the wires and lights, it's not through 18:46 the vent in the floor. 18:47 He does not climb on the roof to sneak in the belfry 18:50 in the steeple. 18:51 The answer is clear when you look in the mirror, he gets 18:54 in the church through the people." 18:58 It's not the building we're afraid of, it's how he gets 19:02 into us. 19:04 I just showed you, he got into James, John, Peter, they all at 19:09 one point forsook Him and fled. 19:12 When Peter said, "Though all men forsake You, I'll not forsake 19:14 You," but he didn't know himself, that's why we got to 19:17 humble ourselves. 19:20 I was fascinated with the story in history of the enigma 19:24 machine, you've heard about the enigma machine, it was this very 19:28 complicated coding machine. 19:30 It was actually developed for financial purposes before World 19:33 War II, and adopted by the Nazis, and modified, and it gave 19:39 them the ability to send messages to their navy and their 19:42 army, and different headquarters, coded messages. 19:47 And the recipients needed to have a codebook and a machine. 19:50 To figure out what these messages were, their chances 19:54 like were one in a billion, billion. 19:56 I mean, you could never figure it out, because the machine had 20:00 a number of wheels and gears and wires, and buttons that you 20:05 would press, and and they would change the code with these 20:09 codebooks from day to day. 20:12 Well, the Nazis were destroying the English in the North 20:16 Atlantic, in the Mediterranean, they were winning in Africa 20:18 because all these blitzkrieg surprise attacks. 20:21 And Winston Churchill said, along with the Polish army, 20:24 they said, "We've got to break that code, we've got to break 20:27 that code." 20:28 And he had a whole big team assigned, and they realized 20:31 they needed to get not only an enigma machine, they needed 20:34 the codebooks. 20:36 Well, what happened, in October 30, 1942, in the 20:40 Mediterranean, a German, or rather an English warship 20:46 encountered a German U-boat. 20:49 They brought it to the surface, because their depth charges had 20:52 so damaged it, it was sinking. 20:54 And the captain of the German U-boat realized that if he 20:57 wanted to save his crew, they had to surface, they would risk 21:00 being either killed or taken prisoner, but they were 21:02 certainly gonna drown, because a submarine is basically iron, and 21:07 when it loses its air, it sinks not like a piece of balsa wood, 21:11 it sinks like an anchor. 21:14 So, with whatever ballast they had left, the captain brought 21:17 the U-boat up, and all of the sailors of the U-boat, 21:21 the Germans, came pouring out like ants, jumping into the sea. 21:26 The English captain brought his ship, his warship, alongside 21:31 the U-boat. 21:33 And he ordered three sailors, he says, "You've got to get 21:35 in there and get the codebooks, the war may depend on it, 21:39 lives will depend on it, we need the codebooks." 21:43 So three sailors jumped overboard, and they went down 21:46 the conning tower of the submarine as it's preparing 21:49 to sink, water's pouring in, and they managed to get out. 21:52 Actually, I've got their names here, Tony Fasson, 22 years old, 21:58 a 29-year-old first lieutenant, Colin Grazier, and a 16-year-old 22:04 canteen assistant, Tommy Brown. 22:08 And they were handing the stuff up the aisles, broke into 22:11 the safe, managed to get the codebooks. 22:13 And Tommy Brown yelled down from the the conning tower, where the 22:16 periscope goes up, he says, "Guys, get out, the water's 22:19 coming in, get out, get out." 22:21 He could tell all the air was escaping and it was going down 22:23 quickly, and they were going back for more because they were 22:27 thinking about getting the information to save their 22:30 comrades, and two of them didn't make it out, but they did get 22:35 the codebooks. 22:36 Tommy Brown escaped, jumped into one of the boats, the little 22:42 landing craft that were there, and that information helped them 22:48 to break the code of the enemy and it turned the war. 22:53 Now, you have a codebook in the Bible, Someone has died to make 22:59 it available for you, so that you could know what the devil's 23:03 tactics are. 23:05 What a shame if we would ignore it. 23:08 There's one more little fact I'll give you. 23:11 When they finally broke the enigma code, some of the 23:15 mathematicians had figured it out, they were listening to the 23:17 radio transmissions from Germany and they said, "There is going 23:21 to be a major attack in the North Sea tomorrow." 23:25 They said, "You know that?" 23:27 They said, "We know that, we know with 99%." 23:30 And the high brass did not take them seriously, and there was 23:33 a major attack and several British ships were sunk because 23:37 they did not listen to the information they had gotten 23:40 from the codebooks. 23:42 And I wonder how many people are overcome while we've got the 23:45 Book right in our hands. 23:47 Every temptation, Jesus said, "It is written," 23:51 and He was victorious. 23:53 If we would hide God's Word in our heart, it says, 23:56 "That we might not sin against Him," we've got the key 23:59 to resist the onslaughts of the enemy, 24:02 we've got the key to identify the enemy. 24:07 It's something like a man who's taking the stagecoach and 24:12 he's trying to get to the one he loves, but the only way he can 24:16 get to
