00:02 male announcer: This presentation is brought to you
00:03 by the friends of the Amazing Facts ministry.
00:08 Doug Batchelor: One of the most important topics in scripture is
00:11 the subject of "Family."
00:13 From Genesis to Revelation, family is explained and
00:17 magnified as being both a blessing and a necessity.
00:21 There is a heavenly family above, the Father, the Son, Holy
00:24 Spirit and all the angels,
00:26 and there are families on the earth in every nation, tongue,
00:29 tribe, and people.
00:31 And there's also such a thing as a church family, a collection of
00:34 people coming together for one specific purpose:
00:38 to worship God.
00:39 It's that unity in the assembly, which is of particular
00:42 importance to God.
00:44 In Ephesians chapter 4, Paul urges us "to keep the unity of
00:48 the spirit in the bond of peace."
00:51 If you think about it, this is what composes a home, people
00:55 uniting to form a family, creating a home.
00:58 Friends, Jesus is wanting to adopt you.
01:01 He's inviting you to join His family.
01:04 He draws everyone unto Him to Calvary with the intention to
01:08 unite His people on earth and prepare them for that journey to
01:11 the heavenly home.
01:13 It's my hope that today's program will bring you closer to
01:16 Jesus and inspire you with a desire to be part of His family.
01:21 And don't forget, stay tuned for a very important free offer at
01:25 the end of this presentation.
01:31 Doug: The message today, as you could tell from the scripture
01:35 reading, is dealing with the fullness of time.
01:38 And when we think of the fullness of time during this
01:40 time of year, we're thinking, of course, about Christ's
01:44 First Coming.
01:45 But Jesus actually used that phrase twice.
01:48 Not only does Paul say in Galatians chapter 4, "But when
01:52 the fullness of time was come, God sent forth His Son, made of
01:56 a woman," speaking of the birth of Christ.
01:59 But also when Jesus began His ministry, that marked another
02:03 time in Bible prophecy history.
02:05 And it says there in Mark chapter 1, verse 15, he began
02:08 preaching and the first words out of Jesus's mouth were, "The
02:12 time is fulfilled, the kingdom of God is at hand.
02:16 Repent, and believe the gospel."
02:20 So we're gonna be talking about some of the prophecies in the
02:22 Bible that prove that Jesus was Who He says He was.
02:26 You know, there are about 300 Old Testament prophecies that
02:30 provide a number of precise identifying characteristics
02:35 regarding the Messiah.
02:36 And by the way, the word Messiah means "the anointed one."
02:40 And it also, in Greek, it's Christos, or we call Him
02:44 the Christ.
02:46 That's why when they christen a ship, and when your parents put
02:51 suntan lotion on you, they are anointing you, they are
02:55 christening you.
02:56 That's what that means.
02:58 It's the word Messiah.
02:59 There would be one who would be filled with all the fullness
03:02 of God.
03:03 He would be anointed with, filled, saturated with the Holy
03:06 Spirit when God would come to the world in the form of a man.
03:10 And that was Jesus.
03:12 But we're gonna show you from the Bible that, that is so.
03:16 So can't talk about all 300 prophecies, but we're gonna take
03:20 a number of them.
03:21 And I hope that your faith is strengthened through
03:23 this presentation.
03:24 From Genesis to Revelation, it talks about this battle between
03:29 three primary characters.
03:31 You've got the seed of the woman, the Messiah who would
03:33 come, Christ.
03:35 You've got the woman, and that's a symbol for the church,
03:37 the people of God.
03:39 And you've got the serpent or the dragon.
03:41 First prophecy in the Bible you find in Genesis chapter 3, verse
03:44 15, where God said to Adam and Eve there in the garden, "And
03:48 I'll put enmity," there'd be this animosity, this opposition,
03:52 this war, "between you and the woman," the serpent and the
03:55 woman, "between your seed," that's Babylon and her
03:59 daughters, the serpent in its seed, "and her seed.
04:04 And he shall bruise your head and you shall bruise his heel,"
04:08 the heel of the church.
04:10 That's, you know, when you walk, if you're, I sprained my ankle
04:13 a little this week and I was limping for a couple of days,
04:16 hurt the foot, and it affects your walk, and the devil has
04:20 been biting at the heel of the believers all through history.
04:25 But it says in the end, that the seed of the woman would crush
04:29 the head.
04:30 If you get your head crushed, that's a lot different than
04:32 having your foot bit.
04:34 There would be a mortal wound that would finally be dealt to
04:37 the serpent.
04:38 And you trace the prophecies in the Bible, you go to the end of
04:41 the Bible, and you read in Revelation chapter 9.
04:44 Sorry, Revelation chapter 12, verse 9, "So the great dragon
04:48 was cast out, that serpent of old, called the Devil and Satan,
04:51 who deceives the whole world," and he tries to destroy the
04:55 woman and the seed of the woman, as you read in that chapter.
04:58 So this battle, the theme of the Bible is consistent.
05:02 You know, in the first three chapters, you find man in
05:05 a paradise and he's surrounded with everything good.
05:10 But then because of the serpent, you have sin that comes in,
05:14 and all the misery and pain.
05:16 You get to the last three chapters of the Bible, and
05:19 you have the serpent destroyed, and then you have
05:22 the Garden of Eden restored.
05:25 And once again, man is eating from the tree of life.
05:28 So the whole Bible is about how to get back to the garden,
05:30 from the first three chapters to the last three chapters.
05:34 And the key, of course, is the Messiah.
05:36 It's the Savior.
05:38 God would come to earth as our Savior and our substitute.
05:43 So we're gonna ask a number of questions here and let
05:45 the prophecies answer.
05:47 Now, most of the prophecies we're looking at are in
05:50 the Old Testament.
05:51 Just wanna remind you, you know, we have people at all
05:53 different levels in their walk with the Lord.
05:55 So you got the New Testament book of Matthew,
05:59 the Old Testament.
06:01 All of this was written before Jesus was born.
06:04 This talks about the birth of Christ.
06:06 Three quarters of the Bible is Old Testament.
06:09 Most of the New Testament was written by people that only read
06:13 the Old Testament.
06:15 Did you catch?
06:18 Talks about Jesus even after the Resurrection, or talks about
06:22 Paul and the apostles.
06:24 And they're always proving that Jesus was the Christ, pardon me,
06:29 from the Old Testament.
06:31 And so we're gonna look at those scriptures today and I think
06:34 you're gonna see why they came to that conclusion.
06:37 First of all, where did Jesus come from?
06:39 He made some pretty bold statements.
06:41 He says in John 6:36, or 6:38, "For I have come down
06:46 from heaven."
06:48 Not only does He say it there, you can read in John 3, verse
06:51 13, "No one has ascended into heaven but He that came down
06:56 from heaven, that is, the Son of Man who is in heaven."
07:00 He said he came from a place that is out of this world.
07:03 You can also read here in John 18, verse 36, "Jesus said, 'My
07:08 kingdom,'" He told Pilate, "My Kingdom is not of this world."
07:12 So Jesus came from outside of this world, into this world,
07:17 and you and I will not understand through eternity.
07:20 We'll have a better idea when we get to the kingdom, how much
07:24 Jesus condescended to become a human and come to our world.
07:30 It'd be like you and I deciding to be a worm in a city dump.
07:34 To go from the glory that He had and the adoration He had, and
07:38 come down and be treated like He was, it's just incomprehensible.
07:42 What would bring Him to do that other than the explanation that
07:46 He loves us.
07:48 Did Jesus claim divinity?
07:50 Now, there have been some people who've been debating this for
07:53 years, but I don't see how you can read the Bible and deny it.
07:57 You can read in Mark 2, verse 10, "The Son of Man has power
08:00 on earth to forgive sins."
08:02 And even the Jews knew God and God only can forgive sin.
08:06 There is one God, Jehovah is our only Savior, and yet Jesus said
08:10 He is the Savior.
08:12 The Bible tells us that all the criteria that you would find
08:15 about God, you find about Jesus.
08:17 Only God knows the thoughts of men's hearts, yet Jesus always
08:21 knew what they were thinking.
08:23 The Bible says you are to worship God only, one of the
08:25 Ten Commandments.
08:26 But in Hebrews, it says even the angels worship Him.
08:29 And when He rose from the dead, He said, "All Hail," and they
08:32 worshiped Him.
08:33 And so Jesus fills all the criteria of God.
08:37 You can look in John 8:58, Jesus said to them, "Most assuredly,
08:41 I say to you, before Abraham was," what did He say?
08:45 "I AM."
08:47 That is the name that God gave to Moses as the self
08:51 existent one.
08:53 Furthermore, you read in John 10, verse 30 and verse 33,
08:57 He said, "I and my Father or are one."
09:00 The leaders listening understood what He was saying.
09:02 The Jews answered and said, You being a man are making
09:05 Yourself God.
09:06 Now, if I said that, it would be blasphemy.
09:08 But if Jesus said it, it's true.
09:12 If I say that I'm a great basketball player, that's
09:15 bragging and lying.
09:19 If Michael Jordan says, I'm just not very good.
09:22 That's not humility, that's dishonesty.
09:24 He has every right to say I'm one of the best,
09:26 because he was, you know what I'm saying?
09:29 So Jesus is stating a fact.
09:31 He's not bragging or it's not the visions of grandeur.
09:35 Furthermore read in John 10, verse 17, "Therefore, my Father
09:38 loves me, because I lay down my life, that I might take
09:41 it again.
09:43 No one takes it from me, but I lay it down of myself.
09:46 I have power to lay it down, and I have power to take it again."
09:50 How could anyone have power to lay down their life, be dead,
09:53 and power to take it back up again?
09:56 Except you are divine.
09:59 So how do we evaluate these very big claims?
10:02 Where do we go?
10:03 We've got to look at the history that we have, and most accounts
10:07 about the life of Jesus are in the Bible.
10:09 Though we will look at one or two that
10:10 are extra-biblical today.
10:13 "Search the scriptures, these are they that testify of me."
10:18 And if you look, for instance, in Luke 24, when He rose from
10:21 the dead in verse 27, He's walking on the road with
10:25 two disciples following the Resurrection.
10:27 They don't know that He's raised, and He says, "O, fools
10:31 and slow of heart to believe all that the prophets have spoken."
10:34 Notice He says, "'all that the prophets have spoken.'
10:37 Beginning at Moses and all of the prophets, He expounded unto
10:42 them in all of the scriptures the things concerning Himself."
10:47 That means that the Old Testament is filled from Moses
10:50 to Malachi with prophecies that talk about Jesus.
10:53 Doesn't mean every word of the Old Testament is talking about
10:55 Jesus, but you can find the theme of Jesus, the Messiah,
10:59 the plan of salvation all through the Old Testament.
11:03 Hebrews 10, verse 7, "Then I said, behold, I come (In the
11:07 volume of the book it is written of me,)
11:10 To do your will, O God."
11:12 The volume of the book, it is written of Christ, and He was
11:17 the living expression of the will of God.
11:19 He lived out every aspect of the will of God in His life.
11:24 So let's begin to track down how do we know that Jesus was
11:28 the Messiah?
11:29 Well, the Bible gives us some very specific understanding on
11:33 the family tree of the Messiah,
11:36 what people, tribe, and family would the Messiah come from.
11:40 Way back in Genesis chapter 12, God spoke to Abraham and He
11:44 said, "In you, all the families of the earth would be blessed."
11:49 In fact, He repeats this promise to Abraham three different times
11:54 or slightly different, but He made it very clear that I have
11:57 called you out of Babylon to the promised land, and through your
12:01 descendants, the Messiah would come.
12:04 But you know, Abraham was not only the father of uh Isaac and
12:09 Ishmael from which you get, you know, the whole Arab family.
12:14 Not every Arab is a Muslim, you know?
12:17 There are Arab Christians and a person can be born with Jewish
12:21 blood and become a Muslim.
12:23 I know of Jews that have become Buddhists.
12:25 But Islam did start from the descendants of Abraham, but
12:33 Abraham also had a lot of children with Keturah.
12:36 So which son was the Messiah going to come through?
12:39 Well, the Bible spells it out.
12:40 He said to Isaac, I will give your descendants all these lands
12:45 and He repeated the promise to Isaac, and in your seed, through
12:49 your descendants, all the nations would be blessed.
12:53 The Messiah would come through the descendants of Isaac.
12:56 Now, Isaac was a type of Christ.
12:59 When Isaac went up the mountain with His father, he was a
13:01 willing sacrifice there in the prime of his life.
13:06 And he had the wood on his back as Jesus had the cross on His
13:09 back as He went up Calvary.
13:11 And the Bible tells us that, in the same way, it looked like
13:15 Isaac was doomed, but he came down the mountain alive, Jesus,
13:20 also rose from the dead.
13:22 So He's a type of Christ, but the Messiah was gonna come
13:25 through Isaac.
13:26 Now, Isaac had two sons.
13:28 What were their names?
13:30 Jacob and Esau.
13:32 They were very different, but it tells us which of those two sons
13:36 that the Messiah would come through.
13:38 God said to Jacob in Numbers 24, verse 17, "A star shall come out
13:44 of Jacob, a sceptre shall rise out of Israel."
13:48 And even the prophecies that were given before their birth to
13:50 Rebekah, made it clear that the older Esau would serve
13:54 the younger.
13:55 That it would be through the younger, Jacob, who took hold
13:59 of his brother's heel, the one who wrestled with God, his name
14:02 was Jacob, later changed to Israel, meaning a prince with
14:05 God, because he wrestled with God and would not let go until
14:09 he had that blessing.
14:11 But then Jacob had 12 sons.
14:14 So which one of them is the Messiah gonna come through?
14:16 The Bible is so specific.
14:18 You read here in Genesis 49, when Jacob was blessing his
14:21 sons, it said, "The sceptre will not depart from Judah, Nor a
14:26 lawgiver from between his feet, Until Shiloh come; And unto him
14:31 shall be the gathering of the people."
14:33 I always thought it was interesting that Judah was
14:37 the one of the brothers who suggested they sell Joseph
14:41 instead of killing him, which was, you know, better,
14:45 of course.
14:47 But it was Judas that sold Jesus.
14:49 But later Judah went through a real conversion, and when he
14:52 went down to Egypt, he had changed so much, that he told
14:56 Joseph, he didn't know Joseph was Joseph.
14:57 He told this Prime Minister, he said, "I will take
15:00 Benjamin's place.
15:02 I will be a slave."
15:04 He was willing to be the great substitute.
15:06 He had changed.
15:07 Well, the Messiah was gonna come through the tribe of Judah.
15:10 Well, Judah had at least three sons, two of his sons died
15:14 before they we're able to procreate.
15:17 And it tells us that the Messiah was gonna come through the clan
15:23 of David.
15:24 You read about this in Isaiah 11, verse 1 and 2, "There shall
15:29 come a rod, a stem from Jesse," the house of Jesse, and Jesse
15:34 had several sons, but which son?
15:36 And it said, "A branch shall grow from his roots: and the
15:39 Spirit of the Lord shall rest upon him."
15:41 Later, the prophet Nathan comes to David and says that
15:45 "your son will build me a house that will last forever."
15:48 Speaking of the son of David, not only did Solomon build
15:51 a temple, but the son of David that would build a house that
15:54 would last forever is Jesus.
15:55 That's why Jesus said, destroy this temple made with hands,
15:59 and in three days, I will make one without hands.
16:01 So you notice how the focus keeps getting a little sharper
16:04 as we're going through these prophecies, who is gonna be
16:06 the Messiah.
16:08 By the way, I heard somebody did--since there's 300
16:10 prophecies in the Old Testament that help identify Jesus.
16:14 Someone did some math and they said the statistical odds of
16:20 finding one person that meets the criteria of only eight of
16:24 these prophecies is, what is the word, a zillion beyond
16:29 a trillion?
16:30 What's the next?
16:33 A google?
16:35 Google is one of those.
16:36 Anyway, it's an astronomical number just so far beyond
16:40 the possibility that it could be coincidence that all of these
16:44 criteria would line up in one person.
16:47 Someone said it's something like taking the state of Texas,
16:51 covering it with quarters 2 feet deep, and then telling you that
16:56 there is one quarter out there that has been dipped in
17:00 gold, go find it.
17:02 You know how big Texas is?
17:05 So you cover the state of Texas with quarters 2 feet deep, you
17:08 gotta find that one quarter.
17:09 It's just the odds are astronomical.
17:13 So we know Jesus came, of course, through the tribe
17:17 of David.
17:18 And let's look at some verses to prove that
17:19 now from the New Testament.
17:21 You read in Luke chapter 1, verse 26
17:23 and verse 27, "Now in the sixth month the angel Gabriel was sent
17:29 by God to a city of Galilee, named Nazareth."
17:32 Where was the angel sent?
17:35 Nazareth.
17:36 You know what Nazareth means in Aramaic?
17:39 It's the word branch, that comes up later for two reasons.
17:44 "To a virgin betrothed to a man whose name was Joseph, of
17:48 the house of," who?
17:50 "The house of David."
17:52 Not only that, but said he'd be born of a virgin.
17:55 That's a whole separate prophecy that you find.
17:57 Look here in the book of Isaiah chapter 7, verse 14, "Behold,
18:02 a virgin will conceive and bear a Son, and you will call His
18:06 name Emmanuel," which is being interpreted God with us.
18:09 And then you go to the New Testament and we see that that
18:12 was fulfilled there.
18:14 Now the birth, this is Matthew 1:18, the birth of Jesus Christ
18:17 was as follows, "After His mother Mary was betrothed to
18:21 Joseph," that means they were engaged, "before they came
18:24 together, she was found to be with child of the Holy Spirit."
18:29 And we heard where the angel said, "The power of the Almighty
18:32 would come over you."
18:33 And that's why, you know, Jesus is this supernatural, and that's
18:40 the correct word, supernatural combination of human and divine.
18:47 The place of his birth is spelled out in the Bible.
18:50 You can read the prophecy here in the book of Micah, chapter 5,
18:54 verse 2, "But you, Bethlehem Ephratah," now, the reason he
18:57 says Bethlehem Ephratah is there were two places
18:59 called Bethlehem.
19:01 You know, it's like in North America, you got several cities
19:03 called Farmington, it means Farming Town.
19:05 There's a couple of Portlands, you got Portland, Maine, you got
19:09 Portland, Oregon.
19:10 But, so there was a--the word Bethlehem means house of bread.
19:14 It was not an uncommon--anywhere that had a big bakery.
19:16 It might be called a house of bread, but this was the
19:18 Bethlehem Ephratah, and this is where Rachel died, giving birth
19:23 to Benjamin.
19:25 And she was buried there and it was just outside, or not too far
19:29 from Jerusalem.
19:31 "But you Bethlehem Ephratah, though you are little among the
19:34 thousands of Judah," it's a little Hamlet, "yet out of you
19:38 shall come forth to me the one who's the ruler in Israel; whose
19:42 goings forth are from old, even from everlasting."
19:45 Now, that prophecy is so clear, it can't be misunderstood.
19:48 That prophecy is so clear that when the wise men came looking
19:52 for the one who was born King of the Jews, and Herod got all
19:56 upset and agitated that there was gonna be someone to replace
20:00 him, I don't know why he was worried about a baby king at
20:03 that point because he was already a pretty old man, and
20:05 he had nothing to worry about by the time the baby grew up.
20:08 He called in the scribes and Pharisees and said, where does
20:10 the prophecy say that the Messiah would be born?
20:14 They knew, they said Bethlehem.
20:16 So it was really clear, it's clear from this,
20:20 was Jesus born in Bethlehem?
20:22 He was.
20:24 Now there's a problem, where did the angel come and appear
20:27 to Mary?
20:29 Nazareth, remember we just read that?
20:31 "An angel came to a virgin that was in the city of Galilee
20:34 called Nazareth."
20:35 Nazareth is 70 miles north, and she is found to be with child
20:41 70 miles north.
20:42 And 70 miles back then was more than 70 miles today, because
20:48 70 miles today, you conquer in an hour.
20:50 Some of you conquer it in half an hour,
20:52 depends on how you drive.
20:54 But back then it was a pretty serious journey.
20:58 So God has to somehow get Mary down to Bethlehem before she
21:02 gives birth.
21:03 Enter Octavian Caesar, also known as Augustus Caesar.
21:07 We've got a month named after him.
21:09 He was one of the most successful leaders in history.
21:12 He ruled Rome for about 40 years, and it was during
21:15 the time of what they call the great "Pax Romana."
21:19 That means the Roman peace.
21:21 See when Jesus came, it was ideal in its timing
21:25 historically, and it was ideal in its location.
21:29 Why was it ideal in its timing?
21:32 Because Augustus Caesar, he was the one who really went and
21:36 stretched the Roman roads farther than ever.
21:39 It was like the internet, communication--Karen was in
21:42 Greece a little while ago, and she was telling me about seeing
21:44 the ancient Roman roads, and I told her, they looked a lot
21:47 better back then than they do now.
21:50 And they used to go screaming up and down those roads with
21:53 chariots, like the Pony Express and they'd change
21:56 riders and messages went flashing through the Empire.
21:59 For them, it was lightning speed.
22:01 And so communications happened very quickly.
22:04 Another reason the timing was perfect is the Jews had been
22:08 scattered all over the Roman Empire, and they were
22:10 in industries.
22:11 If you doubt that, read Acts chapter 2, when the Holy Spirit
22:14 was poured out.
22:16 Says, "Now devout Jews from out of every nation under heaven
22:21 came to Jerusalem for Pentecost."
22:24 So when the Holy Spirit was poured out and the news about
22:27 Jesus spread, they were converted.
22:29 They then fanned out from Jerusalem back to their homes
22:32 and the gospel spread on those Roman roads like lightning.
22:36 So that Paul said in one generation, the gospel has been
22:38 preached to every creature under heaven.
22:40 Of course, that was a little bit of hyperbole.
22:42 I'm not sure they had made it to, you know, South America and
22:45 Australia, and some of these places.
22:47 But the gospel had gone through the known civilized world in
22:50 one generation.
22:52 The other reason it was an ideal location is because the place
22:55 where Jesus was born, the land of Israel was a land bridge
22:59 between three great continents of Europe, Asia, and Africa.
23:05 So here Rome owned that territory.
23:08 Christ was born.
23:09 The message then went fanning out, it went into North Africa,
23:12 it was taken down to Ethiopia, it went off into India with
23:15 Thomas, it went off through Europe with Paul and Peter and
23:19 the others.
23:20 So the timing was perfect.
23:22 So when the Bible says, "In the fullness of time,"
23:26 some people wonder, "Why didn't Jesus come 1,000 years
23:29 after Adam sinned.
23:30 Why did he wait 4000 years?"
23:34 The ways of the Lord is sometimes a mystery, but there's
23:36 good reason for it.
23:37 He waited for the perfect timing.
23:39 He also waited for conditions to be at their lowest in some
23:43 respects morally, when people especially needed, a time of
23:48 darkness, this light shone the brightest.
23:51 So she went down to Bethlehem, and Luke chapter 2, verse 6,
23:57 "And so it was, while they were there, the days were
24:00 accomplished that she should be delivered.
24:03 And she brought forth her firstborn Son, and wrapped him
24:07 in swaddling clothes," swaddling clothes is strips of cloth,
24:12 the early Pampers, "and laid him in the manger; because there was
24:16 no room for them in the inn."
24:18 Isn't that something?
24:19 You've heard it before, but it's still staggering when you think
24:22 that God Almighty of the cosmos comes to the world in the form
24:26 of a man, and there's no room for Him, and He comes to His own
24:29 people that had all the prophecies, and they do not
24:31 know Him.
24:33 And it's--the religious leaders totally miss it.
24:36 And yet it's revealed to a shepherd, and later to some
24:40 foreign wise men or Magi.
24:44 He's laid in a manger.
24:45 A manger is a place where you put grain for the beasts.
24:49 And I think it's interesting that here in a town called
24:53 "The House of Bread," the bread of life is put in a vessel
24:58 for bread.
24:59 So everything about that is telling us that Jesus is
25:02 the bread that came down from heaven, amen?

26:11 So we need to know something about God to rightly understand
26:14 and embrace salvation.
26:16 Yet, in the church today, there's a great deal of
26:18 confusion about the nature of God.
26:20 The Bible says, God is one God, but is he three persons?
