00:02 male announcer: This presentation is brought to you
00:03 by the friends of the Amazing Facts ministry. 00:08 Doug Batchelor: It's remarkable to look back and to see how the 00:11 Lord has led through time. 00:13 And it's through progression and providence, His will is 00:16 made clear. 00:17 Throughout scripture, step by step, the Lord has led His 00:20 people from generation to generation. 00:23 Even here at Amazing Facts, 00:25 I clearly see God's guiding all the way from that very first 15 00:29 minute broadcast in 1966. 00:32 From radio, to television, to publishing, to global 00:36 evangelism, it's evident that God has a divine plan in motion. 00:40 Friends, the Lord has a plan for you as well. 00:44 Jeremiah 29:11 says, "'I know the plans that I have for you,' 00:49 declares the LORD, 'plans to prosper you, not to harm you, 00:53 plans to give you hope and a future." 00:56 That great hope is Christ and through Him, Amazing Facts is 01:01 moving forward. 01:03 But you might wonder, what is God's specific purpose for 01:06 your life? 01:07 As you trust God with your life and walk with Him day by day. 01:11 He will wonderfully unfold His good plan for you. 01:15 We pray that today's program will be a stepping stone to 01:18 strengthen your walk with Jesus, giving you clarity and 01:22 fulfillment in the days ahead. 01:24 And remember, stay tuned for the very important free offer 01:27 following this presentation. 01:33 Doug: I'm sure most of you have heard of Alfred Nobel. 01:37 He did not invent nitroglycerin, but he actually did 01:40 invent dynamite. 01:42 Nitroglycerin was very difficult to handle, and they had a lot of 01:46 accidents and explosions, but by his working with his chemist, 01:51 they developed this permeable way to saturate a clay-like 01:55 substance with the nitroglycerin so it could be safely 01:58 transported, and they called it dynamite. 02:02 And a lot of explosions and danger in his lab when he was 02:07 developing it. 02:08 Matter of fact, it was so dangerous that they had a barge 02:13 where the lab was built off in the water, so if there was an 02:15 explosion, there'd be the less fall out and collateral damage 02:20 as possible. 02:22 Well, a few years later, Alfred became very famous and very 02:26 wealthy from the development of dynamite. 02:29 Some newspapers heard that he had died and they printed his 02:32 obituary, but they got mixed up. 02:35 It was not Alfred, it was his brother. 02:39 And when he read his obituary, it talked about him as the lord 02:42 of dynamite and destruction and death. 02:45 And he was horrified because the man was a pacifist. 02:49 He thought the development of dynamite would help in 02:51 construction, and building, and mining, and it would be 02:54 productive and be safer, and yet they, you know, with every 02:58 invention, they find a way to use it in war, and so it became 03:01 associated with destruction. 03:03 And it broke his heart so much that he thought about his life 03:08 and he thought about his legacy and he said, I really want to be 03:11 helping the world. 03:12 I want to be bringing peace to the world. 03:14 And so he developed a foundation and actually made a fund and 03:20 awards were given out annually to those who had helped human, 03:25 mankind in the development of physics, chemistry, medicine, 03:29 literature, and peace. 03:31 We've all heard about the Nobel Peace Prize. 03:34 He was able to kind of change his legacy now. 03:38 But not too many people read their obituary. 03:43 If you do, I bet it would make you nervous. 03:46 Very few people write their own obituary though some have, but 03:51 Jesus wrote His own obituary. 03:56 There's a lot of prophecies in the Bible that talk about the 03:58 first coming of Jesus, and we're going to look at some of these 04:01 prophecies that'll help illustrate the identity of 04:05 Jesus, so that you have no doubts about it. 04:07 And so in the message about the "Fullness of Time," we're going 04:10 to examine, was Jesus the one? 04:13 Was Jesus the Messiah that the scriptures had foretold? 04:18 And that's the big question. 04:19 So we're going to ask a number of questions here and let the 04:22 prophecies answer. 04:23 Now, you can read the prophecy here in the book of Micah 04:26 chapter 5, verse 2, "But you Bethlehem Ephrathah, though you 04:30 are little among the thousands of Judah," that's a little 04:32 Hamlet, "Yet out of you shall come forth to Me The One who's 04:37 the ruler in Israel, Whose goings forth are from old, even 04:41 from everlasting." 04:43 Now, that prophecy is so clear, it can't be misunderstood. 04:45 That prophecy is so clear, that when the wise men came looking 04:49 for the one who was born king of the Jews, and Herod got all 04:54 upset and agitated that there was going to be someone to 04:57 replace him. 04:58 I don't know why he was worried about a baby King at that point, 05:01 because he was already a pretty old man, and he had nothing to 05:03 worry about, by the time the baby grew up, he called in the 05:06 scribes and Pharisees and said, where does the prophecy say that 05:10 the Messiah would be born? 05:11 They knew, they said Bethlehem. 05:14 So it was really clear, it's clear from this, was Jesus born 05:18 in Bethlehem? 05:19 He was. 05:21 Now there's a problem, where did the angel come and appear 05:24 to Mary? 05:26 Nazareth, remember we just read that? 05:28 "An angel came to a virgin that was in the city of Galilee 05:31 called Nazareth." 05:33 Nazareth is 70 miles north, and she is found to be with child 70 05:38 miles north. 05:40 And 70 miles back then was more than 70 miles today, because 70 05:45 miles today you conquer in an hour. 05:47 Some of you conquer it in half an hour, depends on how 05:50 you drive. 05:52 But back then, it was a pretty serious journey. 05:55 So God has to somehow get Mary down to Bethlehem before she 05:59 gives birth. 06:00 Enter Octavian Caesar, also known as Augustus Caesar, we've 06:05 got a month named after him. 06:06 He was one of the most successful leaders in history. 06:09 He ruled Rome for about 40 years and it was during the time of 06:13 what they call the great Pax Romana, that means the 06:17 Roman peace. 06:18 So Joseph also went from Galilee out of the city of Nazareth into 06:23 Judea under the city of David, which is called Bethlehem 06:27 because he was of the house and the lineage of David. 06:30 You had to register for your taxes in your hometown. 06:33 They were worried about people evading taxes back then just 06:36 like they are now. 06:37 And so you actually had to go to your hometown in that year 06:40 and register. 06:41 Now, let's get something out of the way, and I hope I don't make 06:43 any enemies. 06:45 Jesus was not born on December 25. 06:51 I'll give you three Bible reasons if I can remember them. 06:54 First of all, we know how long Jesus lived, 33.5 years. 06:59 We know when Jesus was baptized. 07:01 Luke chapter 3 says, "As He began to be 30 years of age." 07:05 Now, this is also very significant, is that Jesus was 07:08 baptized right on his 30th birthday, which means through 07:13 the prophecies we're going to see in a moment in Daniel, 07:15 not only could they tell, you know, 07:17 where He was going to be born, 07:19 but knowing when He would be anointed and begin His ministry, 07:21 all they had to do is count back 30 years and have a good 07:23 estimate of when He would be born. 07:26 And there were a few people that have been studying the 07:28 prophecies that were pretty close. 07:30 Simon, God had told him, or Simeon rather, in the temple, 07:33 that the time of the Messiah's coming was there. 07:36 So we know that Jesus, He died what time of year? 07:41 Spring. 07:43 He ministered 3.5 years. 07:45 If you count back 3.5 years from spring, you're going to end up 07:50 in the fall. 07:51 Another reason is because we know that shepherds are not 07:55 guarding their flocks at night, the climate in Israel is very 08:01 much like northern California and December 25, you're not 08:04 going to be out in the field with your sheep. 08:06 The sheep are going to be in the fold, and you're going to 08:08 be in the house with the fire, as they're not pasturing 08:12 during that time, they're feeding them hay during that 08:14 time that they've stored up. 08:17 And then, we know that they would not call for an 08:21 international tax where people have to travel the very worst 08:25 season of the year. 08:26 The reason that the 25th of December has traditionally been 08:30 the time when people celebrate it is because it was already a 08:34 holiday among the Romans. 08:36 You know, the shortest day of the year is the 21st of the 22nd 08:39 of December. 08:40 Very little difference between the two. 08:42 You don't notice a difference in the length of the days from the 08:46 winter solstice until about the 25th. 08:49 So they saw a notable difference that the days began getting 08:52 longer again during the 25th and they called it the rebirth of 08:56 the sun. 08:57 And so some of the church fathers about three or 400 years 09:01 after Christ, they said, you know, we might reach more pagans 09:04 if we just, you know, sort of eclipse their sun worship with 09:08 worshiping the Son of God. 09:09 Since we don't know the day of His birth, let's say it's the 09:12 25th of December and maybe we could get them to focus more 09:15 on Jesus. 09:16 Now, I don't know that you should make compromises like 09:19 that, but you might wonder what do we do now as a church. 09:22 Since we don't know the date, and the world is talking about 09:25 Jesus, let's make the most of it, and let's talk about Jesus, 09:28 because am I going to preach about the birth of Jesus 09:30 in July? 09:32 Doesn't that seem weird now in our culture? 09:35 So hold fast to that which is good. 09:38 Amen? 09:39 And if someone's going to regard the day, regard it unto the Lord 09:43 is what the Bible says. 09:44 Don't do it for elves and for Santa Claus, but sorry, He was 09:47 not born, even though some of our hymns allude to it, He was 09:52 not born December 25th. 09:54 So she went down to Bethlehem. 09:58 In Luke chapter 2, verse 6. "And so it was, while they were 10:02 there, the days were accomplished that she should 10:05 be delivered. 10:06 And she brought forth her firstborn Son, and wrapped Him 10:10 in swaddling clothes," swaddling clothes is strips of cloth, the 10:15 early Pampers, "and laid him in the manger, because there was no 10:19 room for them in the inn." 10:21 Isn't that something? 10:22 He's, you've heard it before, but it's still staggering when 10:24 you think that God Almighty of the cosmos comes to the world in 10:28 the form of a man, and there's no room for Him and He comes to 10:32 His own people that had all the prophecies and they do not 10:34 know Him. 10:36 And the religious leaders totally miss it, and yet it's 10:39 revealed to a shepherd, and later to some foreign wise men, 10:45 or Magi. 10:46 When Jesus was then dedicated in the temple, when He was eight 10:50 days old, it was fortunate they were in Bethlehem. 10:53 They said, let's dedicate Him right in the temple, which was 10:55 only a few miles away, and there He was circumcised and they 10:59 named Him Yeshua. 11:01 And that means, God is Savior and the Greek is Jesus, and or 11:05 it's actually Jesu. 11:06 And so you know, we say it now in the English derivative 11:09 of that. 11:11 If you're Spanish, you say Jesús, but they gave Him the 11:13 name that means, He will save His people from their sins. 11:17 When they went into the temple, the Holy Spirit revealed to 11:20 Simon, or Simeon, and He blessed them. 11:24 And He said to Mary His mother, He was also an elder and a 11:27 prophet in His own right, "Behold, this Child is destined 11:32 for the fall and rising of many in Israel, and for a sign which 11:38 will be spoken against (yes, a sword)," He told Mary, "(a sword 11:42 will pierce through your own soul), that the thoughts of many 11:45 hearts might be revealed." 11:47 And she remembered those words and shared them with Luke 11:50 following the crucifixion. 11:51 She said, I remember in the temple, he told me that. 11:55 Luke 2, verse 51, "Then He went down with them and He came to 11:59 Nazareth, and He was subject to them." 12:01 Now some people think well, Jesus tries--He tried to order 12:04 His life so that He could impersonate the Messiah. 12:08 How many of you got to choose where you were born? 12:11 You can't choose that. 12:14 All these prophecies, these are things that happen 12:16 by Providence. 12:17 Now, the reason I also put this verse in here is because some 12:21 people say, where did Jesus get all that wisdom? 12:23 Well, after He was born, Joseph and Mary let Him be an 12:27 apprentice of the wise men in India, and He studied under 12:31 the gurus. 12:32 Or He went to the orient and He studied under the wise people 12:36 there, or He went to Egypt to the, and he studied with, and 12:39 they find it so hard to believe that he grew up in a carpenter 12:42 shop with His incredible wisdom and insights that He had. 12:45 But if you believe the Bible, it's really clear. 12:47 He went down with them to Nazareth and He was subject 12:51 to them. 12:52 The Bible says, "He grew and He waxed strong." 12:53 He grew up there and everybody recognized Him. 12:56 They said, "Is not this the carpenter's Son?" 12:58 They knew who He was, He had grown up there. 13:01 Now, here's where it gets interesting. 13:02 We talked about where He would appear and some of the 13:04 circumstances of His birth. 13:06 Now it talks about when He would appear. 13:09 Notice this, "Know therefore and understand, that from the going 13:13 forth of the command to build Jerusalem unto the Messiah the 13:16 Prince, There will be seven weeks." 13:19 So of those 490 years of those 70 weeks or seven, what's seven 13:25 times seven? 13:27 There'll be seven weeks. 13:29 There's a break off of a seven week period and it tells us, 13:30 "the street and the wall would be built in troublous times." 13:34 That's during that 49 year period where there was a great 13:37 battle as they rebuilt the walls in the streets of the temple. 13:42 It says, "There will be seven weeks and sixty-two weeks." 13:46 From the end of the seven weeks, there would be another 62, total 13:49 of 69. 13:50 We're still missing one week. 13:52 That last week is when things get really exciting. 13:55 Unto the Messiah the Prince, and it says, "The street and the 13:59 wall will be built again even in troublous times. 14:01 And after sixty-two weeks," after the 62 week period of 14:06 time, "the Messiah is cut off, but not for himself." 14:10 This is very clear that the Messiah would be cut off, but 14:13 He's cut off for us, not for Himself. 14:16 So let's look at this. 14:18 What's the starting point of this prophecy? 14:20 From the going forth of the command to restore and build 14:23 Jerusalem unto the Messiah the prince, there'll be seven weeks 14:27 and 62 weeks, a total of 69 weeks. 14:32 Now we know when that was given that you can find that decree in 14:37 the book of Ezra chapter 7, this is the final decree from 14:41 Artaxerxes that's given in 457 BC, a date that is very well 14:46 established in history. 14:48 Now, we're looking at this 490 year prophecy. 14:51 You're hearing me say 490 years, but it says 70 weeks, 70 times 14:56 seven, is 49 or 490 days. 15:00 But how many of you know that when you study a Bible prophecy, 15:03 a time prophecy like this, a day equals a year. 15:06 You've got that verse in Ezekiel 4:6, "I have appointed thee 15:10 each day for a year." 15:11 You also read about that numbers 14:34, they had to wander a year 15:16 for every day they spied out the land. 15:18 A day for a year. 15:20 And then Jesus in Luke 13:32 he says, Go tell Herod, I teach, 15:25 cast out devils, do cures. 15:27 Today tomorrow and the third day, I'll be perfected. 15:31 Jesus taught three more years, not three more days. 15:34 And so this is the principle that's used. 15:37 So here you've got the first 49 years and what happened? 15:40 The street in the wall is built in troublous times. 15:43 Then there's another 62 weeks beyond that, that's another 15:46 434 years. 15:49 So that gets us to 483 years total. 15:52 You're still with me. 15:54 That first arc is bringing us for the first 69 weeks. 15:57 But then there's one week left and it says, "In the midst of 16:00 the week, in the midst of this final week, he will cause the 16:03 sacrifice to cease." 16:05 A week has how many days? 16:07 Seven days. 16:09 That goes back to the beginning of the Bible. 16:10 This prophecy is a prophecy connected with creation, also 16:14 prophecy connected with forgiveness. 16:15 Jesus said, how often do I forgive my brother? 16:18 Seventy times seven. 16:21 A week has got seven days and a day in prophecy is how much? 16:26 A year. 16:27 So you got seven years. 16:29 How long did Jesus minister? 16:31 Three and a half years. 16:33 In the middle of this last seven year period that was cut off for 16:36 the Jewish nation, he would cause the sacrifice to cease. 16:39 We're going to read on and find out if all these things happen. 16:43 Jesus, of course, He is baptized after being, He's 30 years of 16:47 age, comes to the Jordan river, John, the Baptist says, "'Behold 16:52 the Lamb of God that takes away the sin of the world.' 16:55 God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and with 16:59 power, who went about doing good and healing all that were 17:03 oppressed by the devil, For God was with Him." 17:05 Acts chapter 10. 17:07 He was anointed when He was baptized. 17:08 The Holy Spirit, Jesus did no miracles before that. 17:11 His miraculous ministry and His teaching began with His 17:15 anointing at His baptism. 17:17 That happened in 27 AD, is when He was baptized. 17:21 Then He taught for 3.5 years, and He died in 31 AD. 17:28 What would He do? 17:29 It tells us something about His ministry here. 17:32 You can read, first sermon that Jesus preaches, He stands up in 17:35 his hometown church. 17:37 He reads from this prophecy, Isaiah 61. 17:40 "The Spirit of the Lord is upon Me because the Lord has anointed 17:44 Me to preach the good tidings to the poor. 17:47 He sent me to heal the broken hearted, to proclaim liberty to 17:50 the captives, and the opening of prison to those that are bound." 17:54 So talking about the ministry of Jesus, "To proclaim the 17:57 acceptable year of the Lord and the day of vengeance of our God. 18:01 To comfort all those who mourn." 18:03 Christ's ministry was one of warning as well as one of 18:06 comfort, and healing, and preaching, helping people get 18:09 out of prison, so to speak. 18:12 Those who heard Jesus speak, and they sent guards to 18:15 arrest Jesus. 18:17 They came back and the religious leader said, where is He? 18:19 You're supposed to have arrested Him? 18:20 You know what they said? 18:21 No man ever spoke like this Man. 18:25 What about the events surrounding the cross? 18:27 This is where it is especially fascinating. 18:31 During the triumphal entry, "Rejoice greatly O Daughter of 18:34 Zion, and shout O Daughter of Jerusalem, your king is coming 18:38 to you. 18:39 He is just having salvation lowly and riding upon a donkey, 18:43 the colt, the foal of a donkey. 18:45 That is in Zachariah that is written hundreds of years before 18:48 the event happened. 18:50 We know Jesus rode through the golden gate into Jerusalem on a 18:53 donkey just as it was foretold. 18:56 Point number nine, the events around His betrayal. 18:59 Now as you get near the end of Christ's life, there's more and 19:02 more prophecies, so we don't miss the most important event. 19:06 Look at what it says in Psalm 41:9, "Even my own familiar 19:10 friend in whom I trusted, who ate my bread has lifted up his 19:14 heel against Me." 19:15 Who was that? 19:16 That's Judas. 19:18 Right after eating with Jesus, eating bread with Him, he goes 19:21 out and he betrays Him, and it tells the amount. 19:25 Zachariah 11, "Then I said to them, if it's agreeable to you, 19:28 give me my wages. 19:30 If not, refrain." 19:31 So they wait out for my wages, 30 pieces of silver. 19:36 Zachariah 11:13 tells what they did with the money. 19:39 And the Lord said to me, throw it to the potter, that princely 19:42 sum, so they set on me. 19:44 So I took the 30 pieces of silver, the exact amount that 19:47 Jesus was betrayed for, and threw them into the house 19:51 of the Lord for the potter. 19:53 They took the money that Judas threw down on the temple floor 19:57 and they used it to buy a potter's field, exactly as it 20:00 had been foretold. 20:03 The manner of His death. 20:06 They didn't have crucifixion when these prophecies were given 20:08 in Psalm 22. 20:10 Jesus on the cross said, "My God, My God, why have you 20:13 forsaken me?" 20:14 That's the first verse. 20:16 Read down later in that very Psalm, and He's giving 20:18 people the clues that should help them know who He was. 20:21 "For dogs have surrounded Me, the congregation of the wicked 20:25 has enclosed Me. 20:26 They pierced My hands and My feet." 20:29 You read in verse 18, "They divide My garments among them 20:33 and for My clothing, they cast lots." 20:36 He details, how could that be a coincidence? 20:38 "And when they crucified him," you read it now in the New 20:41 Testament, "They divided his garments, casting lots for them 20:44 to determine what every man should take. 20:48 And then you read in John 19, "But when they came to Jesus, 20:52 they saw that He was already dead. 20:54 They did not break His legs. 20:56 "But one of the soldiers pierced his side with a spear, and 20:59 immediately blood and water came out." 21:02 Psalms had said, "The look on the one whom they have pierced." 21:06 All these prophecies are so clear, and that, a prophecy is 21:10 found in Daniel, in Isaiah, and in Daniel nine. 21:14 So it says he'll confirm the covenant with many for one week. 21:17 But in the middle of the week, he'll bring an end to the 21:20 offering and the sacrifice. 21:22 But what happens, there's still three and half more years? 21:25 The disciples go-- 21:26 The gospel goes like crazy for three and a half more years. 21:30 We're looking at the 70 week chart, prophecy of Jesus, 21:34 the Messiah. 21:36 You read how Stephen was stoned. 21:39 Stephen made a great gospel appeal to the leaders of the 21:43 Jewish nation. 21:44 The Sanhedrin, their version of the Supreme Court. 21:46 They plugged their ears, they took him out of the city. 21:49 They executed him just like Jesus was taken out and executed 21:52 three and a half years earlier. 21:54 He was taken out, executed and Jesus said, "Father, 21:56 forgive them." 21:57 Steven said, "Lord lay not this sin to their charge." 21:59 They took away Jesus's clothes and gambled for them. 22:02 They took the clothes and they laid them at the feet of Saul, 22:05 who later became Paul. 22:07 There's an echo of the crucifixion of Jesus three 22:10 and a half years later. 22:12 That's AD 34. 22:14 At the end of this 490 year prophecy, it matches 22:17 up perfectly. 22:19 And there you've got a picture on the screen of the whole 22:22 beautiful event. 22:24 Friends, there's no question that Jesus was who He says 22:26 He was. 22:28 Can you say amen? 22:29 He came, He fulfilled the time when He came as a baby. 22:32 He fulfilled the time when He began his ministry. 22:35 He fulfilled the time when He died on the cross. 22:37 And ultimately, with the execution of Stephen, 22:42 the gospel then went everywhere. 22:44 You know, now I'm going to read a quote and this comes from 22:46 Flavius Josephus, the great Jewish historian. 22:49 He lived just following the time of Christ, but he was very 22:54 thoroughly aware. 22:55 Listen to what he says. 22:57 "Now there was about this time, Jesus, a wise man. 23:00 If it be lawful to call him a man, for He was a doer of 23:04 wonderful works. 23:05 A teacher of such men has received the truth 23:07 with pleasure. 23:08 And He drew over to Him, both many of the Jews and many of 23:11 the Gentiles. 23:12 He was the Christ. 23:15 And when Pilate, at the suggestion of the principle men 23:17 among us, had Him condemned to the cross, those that loved Him 23:21 at the first did not forsake Him. 23:24 For He appeared to them alive again the third day as the 23:26 divine prophets had foretold these things." 23:29 This is incredible friends. 23:30 This is a Jewish historian. 23:33 These and 10,000 other wonderful things concerning Him and the 23:36 tribe of the Christians so named from Him are not extinct to 23:40 this day. 23:42 Freely admits that Jesus was the one. 23:44 Look at how this is incredible. 23:46 The time of His birth, that He'd be born of a virgin, the place 23:49 of His birth, the time of His baptism, the time and length of 23:53 His ministry, the type of His ministry, events of His 23:55 betrayal, the manner of His execution, His resurrection 23:59 and ascension. 24:01 And it is amazing to me that people out there will open the 24:02 Bible and say no, Jesus was not the one. 24:06 If you don't believe this friends, what more evidence 24:09 could you possibly be looking for?
