Patterson 00:35 succeeded in tracking and killing the two lions 00:39 that had devoured 135 men. 00:42 The lions are now on permanent display in the Field Museum 00:45 of Chicago. 00:47 Even more deadly was a tigress in India that was reported to 00:51 have killed and eaten 436 people in 1907 before it was killed. 00:57 But the record for man-eating goes to one lion that 01:00 has devoured more than all these other cats combined. 01:03 1 Peter chapter 5, verse 8 advises us: "Be sober, 01:07 be vigilant, because your adversary the devil 01:10 is going around like a roaring lion, 01:12 seeking whom he might devour." 01:15 So how can we be protected against this man-eater? 01:19 Join me, friends, today as we continue our exploration 01:22 to understand the originator of sin: the devil. 01:31 Doug: Chapter 14 of Revelation basically coalesces the whole 01:36 theme of Revelation. 01:37 It's kind of concentrated and melted down in that chapter, 01:41 and we're going to be studying those themes. 01:43 Now, the first thing we're studying tonight, it explains 01:46 the big question: Why is there evil in the world? 01:50 If God is good, if God is loving, if God is all powerful, 01:55 then why do so many bad things happen? 01:58 Why do innocent people suffer? 02:00 If God is good, what--why did God make a devil, people wonder. 02:05 Let's get into the first question in your lesson 02:08 that you have in your hands. 02:09 Question number one: 02:10 What are the good angels like? 02:13 "All the angels stood around the throne and the elders 02:17 and the four living creatures, they fell on their faces 02:19 before the throne and they WORSHIPED God." 02:23 And so, the angels worshiped the Lord. 02:25 They--and these, of course, are the good angels. 02:28 What do the good angels do on earth? 02:31 Hebrews 1:14: "Are they not 02:33 ministering spirits sent forth to MINISTER 02:36 for those who will inherit salvation?" 02:39 They are the army of God. 02:41 They're the hospital staff that's always doing God's 02:43 bidding, going to and fro the earth, working to save people. 02:47 Now, this is where the study gets interesting, 02:52 because something happened that once you understand 02:57 what I'm about to explain, a lot of things 03:00 are going to click for you. 03:02 A lot of people who say, "Why, why, why?" 03:04 Listen very carefully. 03:06 Which angel turned against God and why? 03:12 "How you are fallen from heaven, O LUCIFER, son of the morning! 03:15 For you said in your heart: 'I will ascend into heaven, 03:20 I will exalt my throne above the stars of God; I will be like 03:23 the Most High.'" 03:25 Satan, something went wrong. 03:27 He didn't start out Satan. 03:28 He started out Lucifer. 03:30 He was a beautiful angel. 03:32 It began with him. 03:34 You can read it says there in Ezekiel 28:17: "Your heart was 03:39 lifted up because of your beauty; you CORRUPTED 03:43 your wisdom for the sake of your splendor." 03:46 Now, all of God's creatures are created. 03:51 The highest of God's creation was the leader of 03:55 all His angels, top general, super-talented, super-brilliant, 03:59 super-good looking, super-musical. 04:02 Name was Lucifer. 04:03 This is the big question, number four: 04:05 Did God create Lucifer to be a devil? 04:09 You know what the answer is? 04:11 No. 04:12 What does it say in Ezekiel 28:15? 04:14 "You were," what's the word? 04:16 "You were PERFECT in your ways 04:18 from the day you were created." 04:20 He's a created being, 04:22 "until iniquity was found in you." 04:25 And people say, "Well, if God made him and he went bad and God 04:31 knows everything, then God knew he was going to go bad, right?" 04:36 God makes His creatures free. 04:41 God wants us to love Him. 04:43 And in order for us to love God, we need to be free. 04:47 You cannot force love. 04:49 That means God wants us to love Him because of who He is. 04:53 And if God pre-programs everybody to love Him, 04:57 is that love? 04:59 It must be freely given. 05:00 Could God have made creatures that say, "I love You, God. 05:03 I love You, God. 05:05 I'll tell You whatever You want. I worship You. 05:06 You're wonderful, You're great"? 05:07 Sure. 05:09 Would that be love? 05:10 God makes His creatures free and He made all of them free. 05:14 Lucifer, because of his power and his brilliance and his 05:17 wisdom and his beauty and the adoration of the other angels, 05:22 it began to go to his head and he resented that he did not have 05:26 all the power of God. 05:28 And it began to eat at him, and it probably happened 05:31 over a long period of time. 05:33 But he nurtured this discontent and then he began to sow seeds 05:37 of discord among the other powerful angels in the universe. 05:42 He is a very smooth operator and he just assumed that people 05:47 think that he's this kind of impish, diabolical-looking, 05:50 ghoulish character. 05:52 Don't be fooled. 05:53 The devil is very real and he is the leader of the rebellion 05:59 against God. 06:00 Question number five: How many angels were convinced 06:04 by Lucifer's deception? 06:06 Was he alone? 06:07 No, he began to campaign. 06:10 You see, the angels have tremendous power. 06:11 They're stronger than humans. 06:13 And the devil, Lucifer, as the chief angel, tremendous power. 06:19 And somehow they believed that if they could just campaign 06:23 against God, He would give the angels more freedom 06:26 and more power, and Lucifer began to sow discontent 06:31 among the other angels. 06:32 And he's so smooth and he is so clever and he's just a real 06:37 manipulator, he was able to persuade how many? 06:40 "His tail drew a THIRD of the stars of heaven and threw them 06:46 to the earth." 06:48 Now, that's a third of, who knows, billions of angels. 06:51 The Bible talks about angels and it uses the highest number 06:53 you can use in Greek, says 10,000 times 10,000 06:57 and thousands of thousands. 07:00 There's--the Bible talks about an innumerable company. 07:03 What happened as a result of Lucifer's deceptions in heaven? 07:08 It says: "WAR broke out in heaven: 07:09 Michael and his angels 07:11 fought with the dragon," and who's the dragon? 07:14 Satan, clearly. That will come out later. 07:16 "And the dragon and his angels fought, 07:18 but they did not prevail," 07:20 because the dragons got one third and Jesus 07:22 and God have got two thirds. 07:25 Not only were they outnumbered, but you got light 07:28 against darkness, good against evil. 07:29 They won. 07:30 And they basically were evicted from heaven. 07:34 You might be thinking, "Why didn't God just annihilate 07:37 all of them?" 07:38 Can He do that? 07:40 I mean, He's God. 07:41 Is there any limit to His power? 07:43 Couldn't God just blink His eyes and vaporize all of the evil 07:48 angels and Lucifer? 07:49 He could have done it as soon as Lucifer rebelled, 07:52 but just think about that. 07:54 Lucifer has been hurling all kinds of terrible aspersions 07:56 and claims and slander against the name of God: "He's brutal. 08:00 He's a legalist. 08:02 He's cruel. 08:03 He forces us to be a certain way. 08:04 He doesn't give us more freedom, doesn't let us have His powers." 08:07 I mean, who knows what he said? 08:08 But it wasn't good. 08:11 And God said, "Okay, enough of you," and he's gone. 08:15 The other angels would go, "Oh, don't rub God the wrong way. 08:20 Look what He did to Lucifer. 08:22 Maybe Lucifer was right. 08:24 Maybe God is mean and arbitrary." 08:28 God could not do that and secure loyalty throughout eternity 08:34 in the universe. 08:35 He wants His creatures to love and trust Him. 08:38 It's one of the central messages in the Bible: Have faith in God. 08:42 If He forced us to obey, we'd never love and trust Him. 08:46 So He gives us freedom, not only us, but He gave 08:48 the angels freedom. 08:50 So He had to allow Lucifer and his fallen angels to carry out 08:56 their program and say, all right, if anyone in the universe 09:01 wants to buy into what Lucifer is saying, they all had 09:04 an opportunity to listen to his claims. 09:06 Most of the universe rejected it except one planet that was 09:11 new and the devil came down and he took possession of a serpent. 09:17 And now I'm getting ahead of myself. 09:19 War broke out in heaven. 09:21 And it goes on to say, "He," Lucifer, "was cast 09:25 to the earth," and who was cast out with him? 09:27 His angels were cast out with him to the earth. 09:31 Why did he come to the earth? 09:33 Because he found an audience here. 09:35 So what methods does the devil use in his war against God? 09:40 So we can understand his tactics, we need to know 09:42 something about the enemy. 09:44 What does the Bible say? 09:45 And what are his tactics that he uses? 09:47 Says, "He," Jesus, "was there 09:49 in the wilderness for forty days," 09:51 and what happened? 09:53 "He was TEMPTED by Satan." 09:55 He is called the tempter. 09:57 He's constantly trying to entice people to do things wrong, 10:02 to sin, to break God's law. 10:04 Why? 10:06 The devil hates people. 10:08 The devil hates Jesus. 10:09 If you don't think so, just look at the cross. 10:12 You can see what they did to Jesus was the devil unloading 10:16 his anger and his fury against Jesus. 10:19 He can't reach Jesus now, but he knows how much Jesus loves us. 10:25 So the way he hurts God is by hurting us. 10:28 And the devil has claimed this world as his dominion because 10:31 our first parents chose to listen to the lies of the devil 10:36 instead of trusting God and obeying God, and all the sin 10:39 and the misery that we see in the world today and the war and 10:42 the suffering, people say, "If-- why does God allow all this?" 10:46 God has no choice if He's going to be a loving God 10:49 and make us free. 10:51 This world rebelled. 10:52 Satan set up his headquarters down here as a beachhead 10:57 to battle against God in our world. 10:59 Paul says it's like a theater to the universe of what's going on. 11:04 He tempts. 11:05 There in the Garden of Eden, he came and he possessed 11:09 the serpent and he spoke through the serpent. 11:12 God said, "Do not eat from the forbidden tree." 11:15 And while she was doing her work in the garden, she looked 11:17 over at the tree and the devil said, "Hah, she's looking. 11:20 That's a start." 11:21 And he took possession of the most subtle 11:25 and hypnotic creature in the Garden, the serpent. 11:27 Probably had wings back then. 11:29 A lot of cultures talk about flying reptiles. 11:33 And the Bible says, "fiery flying serpent." 11:35 Did you know that? 11:37 And God cursed the serpent. 11:38 So it went on the ground, probably flew. 11:40 So it's up in the tree and he says, "Hi there. 11:43 Oh, you're beautiful. 11:45 Come here for a minute." 11:46 And she came, she says, "Wow, I didn't know serpents 11:49 could talk." 11:50 "I couldn't till I ate this fruit. 11:53 Look what it did for me. 11:54 You know, God's trying to keep something from you. 11:56 He said you can't eat from the trees." 11:58 "Oh no, He said we can eat from all the trees 12:00 but not this tree." 12:01 "He knows you will be like God if you eat from this tree." 12:06 That's what he wanted. 12:07 He wanted God's position and he was able to persuade her 12:13 to reach up, take it, eat it. 12:15 Then she gave it to Adam later. 12:17 He ate it. 12:19 Basically, the Bible says in Romans chapter 6: 12:22 "Whoever you obey you are the servants of the one 12:25 who you obey." 12:26 Adam was given dominion of this world. 12:28 When he surrendered dominion to the devil, the devil called 12:33 all his angels and they were cast down, they were restricted 12:36 to this planet because they found an audience here. 12:39 They claimed it as their own. 12:40 That's not me, friends. 12:42 That's what Jesus said. 12:43 Jesus calls the devil, the prince of this world. 12:45 Isn't that what He says? 12:47 That's right. 12:48 That's why the devil said, "Fall down, worship me, I'll give you 12:50 the world," because he claims it as his. 12:52 Jesus came through His life to redeem the world, 12:55 to buy it back, by His life. 12:58 It's--if it wasn't for God, we'd be in much worse shape. 13:01 We got so much to thank the Lord for because he's got angels 13:04 that are guarding us, to buy us. 13:05 You've got one life to choose. 13:07 What master do you want to follow? 13:10 The Bible says in John 8:44, Jesus said: 13:13 "He was a MURDERER 13:15 from the beginning, 13:16 and he does not stand in the truth, 13:18 because there is no truth in him. 13:20 When he speaks a lie, he speaks from his own resource, 13:22 for he is a LIAR and the father of it." 13:26 The devil is a liar and he's a deceiver 13:29 and he's a murderer. 13:30 Revelation 12, verse 10: "Then I heard a loud voice 13:34 saying in heaven, 13:36 Now salvation, and strength, 13:38 and the kingdom of our God, 13:39 and the power of His Christ have come, 13:41 for the ACCUSER of our brethren, who ACCUSED them." 13:45 What else does the devil do? 13:47 He's pointing the finger and accusing. 13:49 "For they are the spirits of demons, performing SIGNS." 13:53 So, does the devil have power? 13:56 Yeah. 13:57 You read where Moses cast his rod down before the Pharaoh. 14:01 It became a serpent. 14:03 The Pharaoh then calls his magicians who work 14:05 for the devil, sorcerers. 14:08 They throw down their rods, they become serpents. 14:11 But the rod of Moses or the serpent of Moses, ate theirs. 14:16 God's power is greater, but the devil's got some power 14:19 to create illusions. 14:20 So just because there's some religious movement and they say 14:23 we've got signs and wonders, that doesn't mean it's always 14:26 from God, amen? 14:29 You can also read it says that "great dragon was cast out, 14:31 the serpent of old, 14:33 called the Devil and Satan," 14:34 no question about who the dragon is. 14:35 Says he's the devil, he's Satan. 14:37 "Who deceives the whole world." 14:39 He is a deceiver. 14:40 The danger with deception, it is the commingling of truth 14:43 and error. 14:45 You say, "Oh yeah, I went to that meeting 14:46 and there's a lot of truth." 14:47 But they might put some poison in it. 14:51 And so there's lots of religious groups in the world today and 14:55 different religions and there's a lot of counterfeit out there. 14:58 Devil's not afraid of having some truth. 15:00 He just mixes in lies to deceive and makes it deadly. 15:04 Question eight: When is Satan the most dangerous? 15:09 It's when he goes to church. 15:11 It says there in 2 Corinthians chapter 11, verse 14: 15:14 "Satan himself is transformed into," what? 15:18 "An ANGEL of light." 15:20 So when the devil came to tempt Jesus in the wilderness, do you 15:23 think he plopped down on the ground and he had 15:26 his red leotards and his bat wings and his horns 15:28 and his goatee and his pitchfork? 15:31 Is that how he appeared to Jesus? 15:32 No, he came as a messenger from heaven, an angel of light. 15:36 And then he mixed into and said, "If You're the Son of God, 15:40 turn these stones into bread. 15:42 Just prove it." 15:44 The devil is very cunning. 15:45 You know, the devil is going to impersonate Jesus in the end. 15:49 You know the first thing Jesus said when He talks 15:51 about the last days? 15:52 "Beware that you are not deceived, for there will be 15:55 many false Christs and false prophets." 15:58 Friends, I'm going to show you how not to be deceived, 16:01 so you can know for yourself, ask any question you want. 16:04 We're going to make it as plain and open as possible. 16:08 Matthew chapter 4, verse 5 and 6, 16:10 "The devil said to Him, 16:12 'If You're the Son of God, throw Yourself down. 16:15 For it is WRITTEN--'" 16:16 What? 16:17 The devil is quoting the Bible? 16:20 Some people think that, you know, devil comes along and 16:23 all you've got to do is hold up your Bible, like when a vampire 16:26 comes, you know, you hold up garlic or a cross, 16:28 and he's going to run. 16:30 The devil will snatch the Bible out of your hand and he'll read 16:32 it back to you and then he'll misquote it. 16:36 That's when he's especially dangerous. 16:38 He says, "It is written." 16:40 So what animals in the Bible are used to symbolize Satan? 16:44 These animals have characteristics that help us 16:47 to recognize the enemy. 16:48 Says: "The great DRAGON was cast out, that," 16:53 what's the other creature? 16:54 The "SERPENT of old, called the Devil and Satan." 16:58 Question number ten: After his eviction from heaven, 17:02 upon whom did the devil direct his fury? 17:05 Where did he focus his attention? 17:07 It says: "The dragon was enraged with the woman." 17:11 This is God's church. 17:12 Two women in Revelation. 17:13 Got a study on that. 17:15 Keep coming. 17:16 "And he went to make war with the rest of her OFFSPRING, 17:19 who keep the commandments of God and have the testimony 17:23 of Jesus Christ." 17:24 That phrase is also there in Revelation chapter 14, verse 12. 17:27 "Here's the patience of the saints. 17:29 Here are those who keep the commandments of God 17:31 and the faith of Jesus." 17:33 Two characteristics of those who are saved in the last days: 17:36 They have faith and they obey. 17:38 They trust and they obey. 17:40 The devil hates the people that trust and obey God. 17:44 So you've got this dragon trying to attack the woman. 17:48 It's like the age old story of the dragon and the maiden 17:52 in distress finally being rescued by the knight 17:55 in shining armor who is Jesus. 17:57 They drew all those fairy tales from this Bible imagery 18:00 that you find. 18:02 Zachariah 3:1, another characteristic of the devil 18:06 is he's fighting the church. 18:08 Then "he showed me Joshua the high priest," he's the one 18:10 who intercedes for all of God's people, "standing before 18:13 the Angel of the Lord, and Satan standing at his right hand 18:18 to OPPOSE him." 18:19 The devil is constantly working to oppose and attack the people 18:22 of God. 18:24 You can also read in John 10:10: "The thief does not come 18:27 except to steal, and to kill, and destroy." 18:31 Jesus said, "I have come that they might have life, 18:34 and have it more abundantly." 18:36 Now, friends tonight, those are the two choices. 18:39 It's talking about Jesus saying I want you to have life, 18:42 life abundantly. 18:44 The devil wants to kill, to steal, steal your life, 18:48 steal your eternity, and destroy. 18:51 And we see that battle going on in our world today between 18:55 these two Titanic forces. 18:57 The devil has cast his vote against you. 19:00 Jesus has cast His vote for you, and you have 19:03 the tie-breaking vote. 19:05 So how do people resist Satan and his temptations? 19:09 You can read here in Matthew chapter 4:10: 19:12 "Jesus said, 'It is WRITTEN, 19:15 "You shall worship the Lord 19:17 your God, and Him only 19:18 will you serve.'" 19:20 So how do we fight him? 19:21 Christ said that it's through the Word of God. 19:25 You see, the devil attacks us in our minds. 19:28 And when you read the Bible, the promises of God, the truth 19:30 of God affects your mind and your thinking and it gives you 19:34 the power and the reasoning to be able to resist. 19:38 And God gives you His Spirit. 19:40 Something happens as you draw close to God in reading 19:43 His Word. 19:44 You're going to notice a blessing come into your lives 19:46 as you participate in the seminar, I promise you, 19:48 because Jesus promised you. 19:50 Blessed are those who read here and keep the words 19:53 of this prophecy. 19:54 He wants to bless you. 19:56 The devil wants to destroy you. 19:58 So we read His Word. 19:59 What else did Jesus say? 20:01 "Watch and PRAY," talk to the Lord, 20:05 "lest you enter into temptation. 20:07 The spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak." 20:10 In James chapter 4, verse 7, it says, "Therefore SUBMIT to God. 20:15 Resist the devil and he will flee from you. 20:18 Draw near to God, and," what will God do? 20:22 Draw near to God, you're here, you're watching, 20:24 you're listening, you are drawing near to God. 20:26 He said, "He will draw near to you." 20:28 He'll speak to you through His Spirit. 20:31 You watch and see if I'm not right. 20:32 Number 12: What is Satan's fate according to Bible prophecy? 20:40 Does he get to live forever? 20:42 It says in Isaiah 14, verse 15: "Yet you shall be brought down 20:47 to Sheol, to the lowest depths of the PIT." 20:51 You can also read in Matthew chapter 25, verse 41: 20:55 "Then He'll say to those on His left hand, 'Depart from Me, 20:59 you cursed, into everlasting,'" what? 21:02 "FIRE," prepared for who? 21:05 "For the devil and his angels." 21:08 Is that pretty clear, that there's evil power in the world? 21:11 Satan and his angels are fighting against God 21:16 and His angels for your attention. 21:19 And the Holy Spirit is working through God's angels, 21:23 and sometimes the angels of God will be nudging you, saying, 21:27 "You need to pray, you need to read the Bible. 21:29 You need to not do that and do this." 21:32 And there is a spiritual battle that's going on every day in 21:36 our lives and we get to choose who we listen to, but there are 21:39 tangible things we can do to draw closer to God. 21:43 Furthermore, you can read in Ezekiel verse 28:19. 21:47 It says: "You have become a horror, and you shall be 21:51 no more FOREVER." 21:54 You know what that's saying, friends? 21:56 When God makes a new heaven and a new earth wherein dwells 22:00 righteousness, there are no evil angels, there are no devils, 22:05 there is no Satan, there is no Lucifer. 22:07 Can you say, "Amen"? 22:08 There's going to be a world without sin and, you know, 22:11 no one will ever doubt God's love again because this terrible 22:16 experiment with sin that the devil launched is going 22:19 to be understood. 22:20 The Bible tells us in the book of Nahum: Sin will not rise up 22:24 a second time. 22:26 I'm sorry, you and I were born on a battlefield. 22:29 All you have to do is look around and say, 22:31 "There's a strange contradiction in the world." 22:35 You can see in creation, the power of God 22:39 and the relationships and the wonders of creation. 22:42 You see there's miracles everywhere in just the way 22:44 your bodies work and how a baby's born. 22:46 There's miracles everywhere. 22:48 But then we see evil. 22:50 Something went wrong. 22:52 We answered that question tonight. 22:54 A very powerful--the most powerful being rebelled. 22:58 He's fighting against God and he wants your hearts. 23:02 But you need to make the decision. 23:05 How does God--question 13: How does God feel about 23:08 the destruction of Satan and his angels, and the wicked? 23:12 God is sad. 23:14 You know, He made them, He loved them. 23:16 God is love, but He cannot abide sin in His world made new. 23:23 Ezekiel 33, "He says, 'Say to them: "As I live," 23:26 says the Lord, "I have NO PLEASURE 23:28 in the death of the wicked, 23:29 but the wicked TURN from his way. 23:31 Turn ye, turn ye from your evil ways! 23:35 Why will you die?'" 23:37 This is what the Lord is saying to you and me. 23:39 He doesn't want us to die. 23:41 He's calling for our hearts and our souls. 23:42 He wants us to worship Him. 23:46 You know, Revelation chapter 3, verse 20, 23:48 says that Jesus stands 23:50 at the door and He knocks. 23:53 He says, "If you open the door, 23:55 I will come in and abide with you." 23:58 I think you hear Him knocking on your heart tonight. 24:00 He brought you to this meeting. 24:02 He's arranged that you're watching or listening. 24:05 He wants your heart. 24:07 The devil wants to destroy you. 24:08 Jesus wants to save you. 24:10 All you have to do is open your heart and open the door and say, 24:13 "Lord, come in. 24:14 Help me." 24:15 How many of you would like to say, "I want the Lord's help 24:17 to get through the last days"?
