00:02 male announcer: This presentation is brought to you
00:03 by the friends of the Amazing Facts Ministry.
00:10 Doug Batchelor: Did you know it's against the law to doze off
00:13 under a hair dryer in Florida, to play Hopscotch on Sunday in
00:17 Missouri, to hunt camels in Arizona, to insert a penny in
00:22 your ear in Hawaii, to tie a giraffe to a telephone pole in
00:26 Atlanta, to catch mice without a license in Cleveland, to put a
00:31 skunk in your boss's desk in Michigan, to detonate a nuclear
00:36 weapon within Chico, California city limits-- which carries a
00:39 punishment of $500, to bathe less than once a year in
00:43 Kentucky, to pawn your dentures in Las Vegas?
00:47 Yes, there are about 2 million laws in the U.S., and, if a
00:52 person could review them at a rate of about two a day, you'd
00:55 be qualified to act as a law-abiding citizen in about
00:59 6,000 years.
01:00 Yet the Lord was able to summarize the entire duty of man
01:04 to God in just 10 simple precepts that contain about
01:08 325 words.
01:10 Jesus said God's law boils down to two crucial principles: love
01:15 for God and love for our fellow man.
01:18 Join me now, friends, as we consider the relevance of God's
01:22 law in our lives today.
01:28 Doug: Do any of you remember a day when you didn't even lock
01:30 your doors in your house?
01:33 Don't raise your hand if you do it now; someone will be
01:36 watching; they'll look you up on the Internet.
01:39 But, let's admit it, you know, times have changed, and the
01:43 values and the morals of the culture have changed.
01:46 Now, I was not raised in a religious home.
01:49 My mother is from a Jewish background, but she was
01:51 basically atheist.
01:53 And my father, he was raised Baptist.
01:55 But, after World War II, he was basically atheist.
01:58 So I didn't grow up with a lot of strong religious training.
02:03 But I still remember, when I went to public school in
02:07 California, they had The Ten Commandments on the wall.
02:11 They called it The Golden Rules.
02:12 Any of you remember that?
02:14 Public school.
02:16 And then, you know, more people were worried about separation of
02:19 church and state-- and we'll talk a little about that
02:21 tonight-- and pretty soon they weren't there anymore.
02:24 And I can understand the government telling people,
02:28 you're not supposed to dictate the first four commandments,
02:32 what God's name is or what God you worship or how you worship
02:37 Him or what His name is or when you worship Him.
02:40 But the government must enforce the last six commandments,
02:46 parental authority-- the government doesn't own your
02:49 children, things like property rights, the sanctity of
02:55 marriage, shouldn't be coveting your neighbor's things, honesty,
03:01 telling the truth.
03:02 These are things that must be observed and enforced by any
03:05 civilized culture.
03:07 And America was built on those principles by Roger Williams,
03:10 where you basically separate the two tables of stone, and the
03:14 government doesn't meddle with the first four, but they must
03:17 enforce the last six.
03:18 And that's what made it such a great country.
03:22 But they, in not wanting any mingling of religion, they took
03:27 all of the law out, which is kind of strange because it's up
03:29 on the Supreme Court building, got a picture of Moses up there.
03:32 Did you know that?
03:35 Now, we are using this as a foundation for our studies each
03:39 night, Revelation 14.
03:40 What is our verse in Revelation 14, and how does that relate?
03:44 It's in verse 12, "Here is the patience of the saints--"
03:48 talking about the ones that are saved as opposed to the ones
03:51 with the mark.
03:52 "Here's the patience of the saints; here are those who keep
03:55 the commandments of God and the faith of Jesus."
04:00 Here, you've got the commandments of God and the
04:02 faith of Jesus, the Bible calls it, "the law and the prophets."
04:07 And so this is something that is crucial in the life of
04:10 a believer.
04:11 They were, we're not just hearers of the Word, but we're
04:13 doers of the Word.
04:14 First question.
04:16 What is God's moral law?
04:18 Not to be confused with lots of different laws in the Bible,
04:21 there's a very simple moral law.
04:24 What is it?
04:25 You can read, in Exodus 24, verse 12,
04:28 "Then the Lord said to me, to Moses,
04:30 rather, 'Come up to me on the mountain and there
04:33 I will give you--'" what--
04:34 ''tablets of stone, and the law
04:38 and commandments which I have written,
04:40 that you may teach them.'"
04:42 He gave him these two tables of stone, and what were they?
04:47 Deuteronomy 10:4, "And He wrote on the tables according to the
04:50 first writing, The Ten
04:53 Commandments, which the Lord had
04:55 spoken to you in the mountain
04:56 from the midst of the fire in
04:57 the day the Lord assembled; and
05:00 the Lord gave them to me."
05:01 So, when God delivered The Ten Commandments, He did something
05:04 He had never before done in history.
05:06 Not one prophet or two, having a vision or a dream, but, while a
05:12 whole nation was gathered in assembly, the Lord God Almighty
05:17 spoke audibly-- no artificial PA system-- and He declared The Ten
05:23 Commandments with thunder and lightning from the mountain.
05:25 It was heard by the whole nation, and the nation said,
05:28 "All the Lord has said we will do."
05:30 And then Moses said, "They've agreed to the covenant."
05:32 God says, "Okay, we're agreeing to the terms.
05:34 Come up.
05:35 I'll give you a written copy."
05:37 That's how contracts work.
05:38 First, you kind of work it out verbally, right?
05:40 No sense writing it up every time.
05:42 First get a verbal agreement, then you say, "That
05:44 sounds good."
05:45 Then you write it up, make it official.
05:46 This is what God did, and he gave him The Ten Commandments.
05:50 Number two.
05:51 To what does the Bible equate God's law?
05:54 Answer, "Therefore the law is holy, and the commandment is
06:01 holy and just and good."
06:05 Now, part of the reason for the lesson tonight, I'm just going
06:08 to tell you up front, is because we know that there's a lot of
06:12 lawlessness in society and people that don't want the law.
06:15 But, what scares me is, there are pastors now that are saying,
06:18 "We don't want the law."
06:20 There are pastors that are turning away from the law, and
06:22 they're saying, "No, we're not under the law anymore.
06:24 We're under grace, and that means we don't need to keep The
06:26 Ten Commandments."
06:27 How many of you have heard that?
06:30 Okay, that is a lie.
06:32 Paul talks about doctrines of devils.
06:34 And, if there's a doctrine of devils, the idea that God
06:36 doesn't care whether or not you keep The Ten Commandments is a
06:39 categorical lie, and I can tell you that based on an abundance
06:42 of scripture I'm going to share with you tonight.
06:44 He did not give us The Ten Suggestions.
06:48 They are not The Ten Recommendations.
06:50 They are The Ten Commandments, and God did not make a mistake.
06:55 And I've heard pastors say, "Well, God gave them the law
06:58 just to prove they couldn't keep it.
06:59 And then He punished them for not keeping it."
07:01 What parent does that?
07:03 Every command of God inherent is the command is the power to
07:07 do it.
07:09 So why can we not get rid of The Ten Commandments?
07:13 Because, when you look at the definition for The Ten
07:16 Commandments in the Bible, the same words are used to describe
07:19 God Himself.
07:21 For example, the Bible says God is perfect.
07:25 Well, the Bible says, in Psalm 19, verse 7, "The law
07:28 is perfect."
07:29 By the way, the verse for God being perfect is Jesus, Matthew
07:32 5:48, "Be therefore perfect even as your Father in heaven
07:35 is perfect."
07:36 The Bible says, "God is love," 1 John 4:8, many places.
07:40 Romans 13:10 says, "The law is love."
07:43 The Bible says, "God is righteous," Exodus 9:27; it
07:48 says, "The law is righteous," and you got the verses on the
07:50 screen, Psalm 119.
07:52 "God is truth."
07:53 "The law is truth."
07:55 "God is pure."
07:56 "The law is pure."
07:57 "God is spiritual."
07:59 "The law is spiritual."
08:00 "God is eternal."
08:01 "The law is eternal."
08:03 "God is unchangeable."
08:04 "Jesus Christ, the same yesterday, today, and forever.
08:06 I am the Lord.
08:07 I change not."
08:09 "His law is unchangeable."
08:11 He says, "I will not alter the covenant that has gone out of
08:13 My lips."
08:16 What does God's law do?
08:19 Well, for one thing, it tells us our need of a Savior.
08:22 You can read, in Romans 7:7, "I would not have known sin except
08:27 through the law.
08:28 For I would not have known covetousness unless the law
08:30 said, 'You shall not covet.'"
08:33 And so, you know, God gives us law because we need it to
08:36 avoid disobedience.
08:37 You can also read here, "By the law is the knowledge of sin."
08:43 Now, is it important for us to know what sin is?
08:45 How can you repent from your sins if you don't know what
08:47 sin is?
08:49 If the devil takes away the law, without the law, there's no sin,
08:52 you with me?
08:53 If there's no sin, do we need a Savior?
08:57 The Lord gives us the law so we'll recognize when we've
08:59 disobeyed, and we can repent and turn from our disobedience and
09:03 turn to Jesus for mercy and power.
09:06 But the law is a blessing.
09:08 And, again, the best Bible definition for what sin is, "Sin
09:13 is lawlessness."
09:15 If you've got the King James Version, "Sin Is the
09:17 transgression of the law."
09:19 People who are taking away the law are taking away the very
09:21 definition of sin, and the devil loves that because Jesus wants
09:26 us to know what our sins are so that He can forgive us.
09:30 So, let's just suppose for a moment that, if I was to go
09:38 through-- Hey, wasn't that tricky?
09:39 If I was to go through the presentation like this, would
09:43 that be at all distracting?
09:45 Do you realize I don't see anything?
09:48 And, you know, I came to the meeting tonight, and I brushed,
09:51 gargled, deodorized, do everything, and I feel fine.
09:55 Now, how are you going to convince me there's a problem?
09:58 A mirror, how convenient.
10:02 So, I feel fine; I'm preaching; I'm talking.
10:06 You're all saying, "Doug, you got an issue."
10:09 I said, "No, I don't."
10:10 You said, "Look in the mirror."
10:11 I look in the mirror, and I go, "Oh, man, that does really
10:13 look foolish."
10:14 So, all right, well, I felt fine until I looked in the mirror.
10:18 So the answer is obviously, just don't look in the mirror.
10:23 I heard about a man in China that ordered one of the first
10:26 microscopes, and he was so fascinated, looking at
10:29 everything under the microscope.
10:31 But then he looked at his rice under the microscope, and he saw
10:34 there was all these microscopic creatures on the rice.
10:37 He loved rice.
10:39 So he threw away the microscope.
10:43 So, is the answer to just get rid of the law because I love
10:45 my sin?
10:47 That's the way a lot of people treat it.
10:50 Or is the answer to use the mirror to try to take this off?
10:54 Is that the solution?
10:56 Is that the purpose of this?
10:58 The law is not to take away our sin.
11:00 So, if this was a mark-- forget it's tape for a minute-- if it
11:04 was a mark, how would I get rid of it?
11:09 You've got to wash it, right?
11:11 So, the law, the law shows me the sin, but I use this-- What
11:18 is this?
11:20 Red, it's a clue?
11:21 Blood of Christ.
11:23 What will wash away my sin?
11:25 Nothing but the blood of Jesus.
11:27 And so, I do this, and then I do this; I feel much better.
11:33 This did not take it away; this took it away.
11:37 This showed me the need for this.
11:40 Do we need this?
11:42 Then we need this to show us our need for this.
11:46 We need the law to show us our need for the cleansing from
11:50 sin, amen?
11:53 So that's the purpose of the law.
11:57 That's why we need it, and that's why the devil hates
11:59 the law.
12:00 Next question.
12:02 Can God's law be amended or repealed?
12:05 What's the Bible say?
12:07 Psalm 89, verse 34, "My covenant I will not break--" you with
12:12 me?-- "nor alter."
12:15 I'm not going to break it; I'm not going to alter it.
12:17 "The word that has gone out of My lips."
12:20 So, some are thinking right now, "What about the new covenant?"
12:23 Stay with me; we'll get to that.
12:26 Again, "All of His precepts are sure.
12:29 They stand fast--" how long?-- "Forever and ever."
12:33 So here you've got The Ten Commandments.
12:35 Now, there's one little thing about this representation here.
12:39 Technically, you'd have the first four commandments on one
12:42 stone, and then the last six would be on the other.
12:45 But this is a summary, and the artist put five on one and five
12:48 on the other.
12:50 So, just to be accurate, it would actually be four and six.
12:53 The first four commandments deal with our love for God.
12:56 What's the great commandment?
12:58 Wait, let me back up.
12:59 God is love.
13:02 So, if you want to melt everything down, it's God
13:05 is love.
13:06 But now, if you break that down a little bit, the two great
13:09 commandments, Jesus said, are what?
13:12 "Love the Lord with all your heart."
13:14 And the other one is, what?
13:16 "Love your neighbor as yourself."
13:18 I've got two arms with 10 fingers, and these fingers do
13:23 what the arms tell it to do.
13:25 If we love God, will we keep the first four commandments?
13:29 If we love God, will we take His Name in vain?
13:32 Will we worship other gods?
13:34 Will we want to revere our time with Him?
13:36 We'll honor His name.
13:37 I did it out of order.
13:39 But those are the first four.
13:40 If we love Him, of course.
13:42 Now, let's go over here and consider for a minute the
13:47 other commandments.
13:48 So here you've got, technically, this would be the last six;
13:50 fifth commandment is honor your father and mother.
13:52 If you love your father and mother, do you honor them?
13:56 If you love, do you kill?
13:58 Do you kill your neighbor?
13:59 Do you lie to your neighbor?
14:01 Do you steal from your neighbor?
14:03 You don't commit adultery.
14:05 You don't covet.
14:07 "Love," Paul says, "is the fulfilling of the law," amen?
14:12 But some people are wanting to just get rid of the law and make
14:16 it disappear.
14:17 Should a born again Christian keep The Ten Commandments?
14:19 This is what we're talking about.
14:21 New Testament, born again Christian.
14:22 "If you love Me," Jesus said, "keep My commandments."
14:27 Wait, someone's saying, "Oh, well, that's
14:29 Jesus's commandments.
14:30 That'd be different from The Ten Commandments."
14:31 Wait a second, who gave The Ten Commandments?
14:35 Jesus-- Bible says, John says, "All things that were made were
14:38 made by Him."
14:40 That's His law.
14:41 So, when He said, "If you love Me, keep my commandments," he
14:44 says, "I have kept My father's commandments, and I abide in
14:46 His love."
14:48 Jesus lived a perfect life of obedience, and it says He's
14:51 given us an example, that we should walk as He walked.
14:53 Now, we may not feel perfect, but His life is an example of
14:57 one of obedience to the law, amen.
15:00 Why?
15:01 Because we love Him, "Now by this we know that we know Him,
15:05 if we--" Do what?
15:06 How do you know if you know Him?
15:08 "If you keep His commandments."
15:11 In fact, the Bible says, "He that says I know Him and keeps
15:14 not His commandments is a liar," John goes on to say.
15:17 A lot of people say, "I love you Lord, I love you Lord;" they
15:19 just don't obey Him.
15:21 And, if you really love Him, you'll want to obey Him.
15:24 "It is not the hearers of the law that are justified,
15:28 but the doers of the law will be justified."
15:31 If that's clear, please say, "Amen."
15:33 People often try to make Paul sound like he's getting rid of
15:35 the law law.
15:36 This is about as clear as you can be.
15:38 It is not the hearers of the law, but the doers, that will
15:41 be justified.
15:42 But doesn't living under grace through faith make keeping the
15:45 law non-essential?
15:47 No, Romans 6:15,
15:49 what does Paul say?
15:50 "What then?
15:52 Shall we sin because we're not under the law but under grace?"
15:54 How does He respond?
15:56 God forbid, people say, "I'm not under the law now, I'm
15:58 under grace.
15:59 I can break the law."
16:01 God forbid.
16:02 And, again, "Do we then make
16:04 void the law through faith?"
16:06 What's the answer?
16:07 "Certainly not!
16:08 On the contrary, we establish the law."
16:12 So, when we look at the cross and we see what our forgiveness
16:17 has cost, do we want to break the law?
16:20 Or are we more eager now to keep the law, out of love?
16:25 We want to be doers of the Word.
16:27 Can you say, "Amen?"
16:29 Was there a law in the Bible that was abolished?
16:33 Now, this is important; a lot of people misunderstand.
16:36 Yes; you can read here in Ephesians 2:14, "He has--"
16:41 what-- "abolished in His flesh the enmity, that is, the law of
16:46 commandments contained in--" in what-- "ordinances."
16:51 There was a law of ordinances; these were revolving around the
16:55 ceremonial laws.
16:56 And, again, you can read, in Colossians 2, verse 13 and 14,
17:00 "He has--" done what-- "he's wiped out the handwriting."
17:04 What kind of writing?
17:06 "Which was against us, which was contrary to us.
17:08 And he's taken it out of the way, having nailed it to
17:11 the cross."
17:12 What were The Ten Commandments written on?
17:15 What were the mosaic laws written on?
17:17 Paper or parchment?
17:20 There are different laws, and it is true, Paul says,
17:25 "Circumcision is nothing, uncircumcision is nothing, but
17:27 keeping the commandments is what matters."
17:29 That can't be more clear.
17:31 He says, "Don't worry about circumcision and the ceremony
17:33 law, but keeping the commandments--" What
17:36 commandments is he talking about?
17:38 Clearly, at least The Ten Commandments, right?
17:41 And you can look in Deuteronomy chapter 4; I think I've got it
17:45 marked here; go to verse 13, "So he declared to you his covenant,
17:49 which he commanded you to perform, The Ten Commandments.
17:53 And he wrote them on two tables of stone.
17:57 And the Lord, and the Lord commanded me at that time to
18:02 teach you statutes and judgments, that you might
18:04 observe them in the land that you cross over to possess."
18:07 So you've got The Ten Commandments, that were placed
18:09 in the Ark of the Covenant.
18:11 And then the Lord had Moses write out a long raft of civil
18:15 laws, ceremonial laws, health laws, and a lot of those laws
18:18 are still the foundation for our society.
18:20 Did you know that?
18:22 Moses is the one who explained, there is first degree murder,
18:25 and there's second degree murder, and intent has a lot to
18:28 do with it.
18:29 And, if your neighbor's donkey wanders away, you should bring
18:31 it back.
18:33 And there's all kinds of great laws that God gave the children
18:35 of Israel that became a foundation for laws all over
18:37 the world.
18:38 It's brilliant, how smart it was.
18:41 But the ceremonial laws, that had to do with the sanctuary.
18:46 When Jesus died on the cross, the veil in the holy place was
18:50 torn from top to bottom, symbolizing that the purpose for
18:54 the earthly sanctuary was fulfilled.
18:57 Jesus said, "Destroy this temple made with hands, and then I will
19:00 make one without hands."
19:01 He spoke of what, His Body.
19:03 Who is the devil's special target in the last days?
19:09 The "dragon was wroth--" King James says wroth-- "enraged with
19:14 the woman, and he went to make war--" this is the battle of
19:17 Armageddon, by the way-- "with the rest of her
19:20 offspring, who--" do what?
19:22 Who is the devil making war with in the last days?
19:26 What is a woman?
19:28 He's making war with a woman, a church, that "keeps the
19:31 commandments of God and has the testimony of Jesus."
19:36 And we'll be talking more about that, but you can't miss
19:38 this, friends.
19:39 You go to the book of Daniel, chapter 3,
19:42 King of Babylon makes a law.
19:44 His government law tells everybody to bow to a
19:46 graven image.
19:47 Those who do not bow to the image will be killed.
19:50 But the Bible says, "Do not pray to images."
19:53 Three Hebrews said, "We would rather go to the fiery furnace
19:57 and disobey the government law, this government religious law,
20:00 than God's law."
20:01 And they were put in, on test because of that law.
20:06 You go to Daniel 6, Persian king makes a law.
20:08 Everybody has to pray to him for King Darius for 30 days.
20:12 Daniel says not to have other gods, that breaks the
20:14 first commandment.
20:15 He had to decide, who am I going to obey?
20:20 In the last days, there is a law made that, if you do not worship
20:23 the beast in his image, you cannot buy or sell.
20:25 Ultimately, there will be a death decree.
20:27 I believe that's going to happen.
20:30 So, if we're fuzzy about what we're supposed to do with The
20:33 Ten Commandments, friends, we're in big trouble because you've
20:37 got the example in the Bible of these heroes that stood up at
20:40 the point of being willing to die rather than disobey
20:43 God willingly.
20:45 So we need to know what we believe.
20:48 The law of God, they are the commandments of the Almighty;
20:51 breaking them is sin.
20:54 And that's why this is important, friends.
20:56 There's going to be a battle between the dragon and
20:59 the woman.
21:00 Simple rule of life: Find out what God makes happy and do it;
21:05 find out what makes the devil happy, don't do it; find out
21:09 what makes the devil mad, do it.
21:12 And then you can read, in Revelation 14, verse 12, "Here
21:15 is the patience of the saints; here are those," and this is in
21:19 our foundation verse for Revelation 14, "here are the
21:22 ones that keep the commandments of God and the faith of Jesus."
21:26 God's people that survive this final trial are going to
21:28 be obedient.
21:30 They're going to believe in God.
21:31 All right, are people saved by keeping the law?
21:34 I want to just reemphasize this point.
21:36 No; Bible is very clear, "For by grace you are saved; it is not
21:41 of yourselves; it is a gift of God, not of works, lest any man
21:46 should boast."
21:47 We are saved by grace.
21:48 Now, some people think, "Well, during the new covenant, we're
21:52 saved by grace.
21:53 But, during the old covenant, they were saved by law."
21:56 Nobody is saved by works.
21:59 Everybody is saved by grace.
22:01 The Bible says, "Abraham is the father of the faithful."
22:04 It says, "Abraham believed God, and it was counted to him
22:07 for righteousness."
22:09 He was saved by faith.
22:10 They were saved by faith, looking forward to the cross.
22:13 We are saved by faith, looking back to the cross.
22:16 But everybody is saved by the cross, friends.
22:18 Nobody is getting to heaven by work, by works, amen.
22:22 Can a person be saved without keeping God's law?
22:26 "If you want to enter into life," what does the Bible say,
22:29 "keep the commandments."
22:31 Jesus said, "If you know these things, happy are ye if you
22:36 do them."
22:37 Revelation, this is the last chapter in the Bible.
22:39 I mean, if you want something clear, "Blessed--" How many want
22:42 to be blessed?
22:44 "Blessed are those who do His commandments, that they might
22:47 have a right to the tree of life, and enter in through the
22:50 gates of the city."
22:51 Now, when you hear a message like this, I know it may it
22:55 frighten you a little bit.
22:57 You said, "Oh, man, there might be areas in my life where
22:59 I'm disobeying."
23:01 Every area in your life where, if you see any, if there's a
23:04 dishonesty, if there's any sin-- and, keep in mind, Jesus said,
23:09 "The Ten Commandments are not just the literal,
23:11 outward obedience.
23:15 It's also the inner attitude."
23:18 And, if you're an honest Spirit-filled Christian, that
23:20 Holy Spirit is going to convict you every time you start getting
23:23 near the spiritual edge of the law, not just the literal edge.
23:27 And that's what it means to be a Christian.
23:30 You want to be led by the Spirit, not just obeying the
23:33 letter but obeying the Spirit of the law-- and the letter; you
23:36 need both.
23:38 What is the outcome of keeping God's law?
23:40 It says, "I've spoken these things to you, that your joy may
23:45 be full."
23:46 Don't believe the lie that happiness comes
23:48 from disobedience.
23:50 Misery comes from disobedience.
23:53 Jesus and Paul, they tell us, "God's going to give you a peace
23:56 that passes understanding."
23:57 When you surrender and say, "Lord, forgive my sin," He not
24:00 only gives you forgiveness for past sins.
24:03 When you come to Jesus, He then gives you power to live a new
24:07 kind of life.
