00:03 by the friends of The Amazing Facts Ministry. 00:09 Doug Batchelor: Have you ever been so nervous, frightened, or 00:11 upset that you fainted? 00:12 About 15% of adults are apt to faint at the sight of blood. 00:16 And it's not uncommon for people to pass out at weddings or other 00:20 public ceremonies that require prolonged standing or stress. 00:24 People have even been known to faint in response to disturbing 00:27 movies or when they're startled. 00:30 The medical term for this is vasovagal syncope, a condition 00:33 caused by an extreme and rapid drop in blood pressure that 00:37 causes an individual to temporarily lose consciousness. 00:40 In Daniel chapter 8, we read that one of God's great prophets 00:44 had a similar experience when he saw something in vision that was 00:47 so distressing, he fainted from shock and was sick for days. 00:52 But what happened in this disturbing vision that so 00:54 troubled the prophet? 00:56 And what's the meaning of the terrifying image he saw? 01:00 How does this longest Bible time prophecy relate to God's 01:03 people and the antichrist? 01:05 You might be surprised how the answers to these questions 01:08 affect your life today. 01:10 So join me now, as we take a closer look at this very 01:13 important subject. 01:14 ♪♪♪ 01:19 Doug: The wisest man who ever lived, in Ecclesiastes, Solomon 01:24 says at the end, as he's talking about the vanity of life, what 01:29 really matters. 01:30 He pursued wisdom. 01:31 He tried to understand. 01:33 He had building projects he pursued, a hedonistic life. 01:36 He had done it all, tried it all, and he wraps it all up by 01:40 saying, "Here is the conclusion of the whole matter." 01:44 Ecclesiastes chapter 12, "Fear God and keep His commandments, 01:49 for this is the whole duty of man. 01:51 For God will bring every work into judgment with every secret 01:56 thing, whether it be good or evil." 02:00 That is not a statement for just a few people. 02:03 Paul says, "We will all appear before the judgment seat 02:09 of Christ." 02:11 There is a judgment day coming, but the Lord tells us that 02:15 because there is a way for us to prepare. 02:18 Well, there's a prophecy in the Bible that talks about this 02:20 great judgment day where everyone is going to give an 02:24 account one way or the other. 02:25 And we're not only looking in Revelation, but the book of 02:28 Daniel and Revelation are parallel books. 02:32 Let me just give you a quick example. 02:34 Daniel chapter 7 talks about these four kingdoms that would 02:37 persecute God's people, a lion, a leopard, a bear, and then this 02:43 nondescript beast. 02:45 Then you go to Revelation 13, the beast in Revelation 13, says 02:49 he's like a lion, a leopard, and a bear, and some 02:52 nondescript beast. 02:54 There's great parallels between Daniel and Revelation. 02:58 And, in Daniel, you've got this image with the ten toes, and 03:02 then you get to Revelation, you've got the beast with the 03:04 ten horns, and a lot of overlap. 03:06 So, to understand the judgment in Revelation, we also need to 03:10 go to the book of Daniel. 03:11 We're going to do that now as we delve into our lesson. 03:14 Question number one: Daniel's 03:17 vision starts with a ram that 03:19 has two horns. 03:21 What does this ram represent? 03:23 Do we need to guess, or does the angel help us understand it? 03:27 The angel comes to explain it, and he said, "The ram that you 03:29 saw, having the two horns--they are the kings of--" what empire? 03:35 Okay, now listen very carefully. 03:39 When you read the prophecy in Daniel chapter 2, Daniel chapter 03:42 7, Daniel chapter 8, Daniel chapter 9, Daniel chapter 10, 03:48 11, 12, it's not dealing with every government of the world. 03:53 Those prophecies are dealing exclusively with the 03:57 governments and the world powers that had a dramatic impact on 04:01 God's people and His movement. 04:04 So you're not going to find the prophecy of Daniel talking about 04:07 India, so to speak, or-- actually, Persia covered part of 04:11 that, but, let's pick Australia, Inca Empire, China. 04:16 They're not dealing with that; they're dealing with the ones 04:18 that occupied God's people, the Jews, and then later, as 04:22 Christianity spread, that persecution. 04:25 So these are the kingdoms and the powers that are listed. 04:28 And, since these beasts represent kings, when we get to 04:32 Revelation, we talk about the mark of the beast. 04:36 I remember, when I first became a Christian, they said, "The 04:38 beast, it's a big computer." 04:40 Any of you heard that? 04:42 Yes, you came from that era. 04:45 And we thought the barcode, the barcode on all the products when 04:49 it first came out, that's the mark; don't buy anything that's 04:51 got a barcode on it. 04:53 All my friends that believe that are now dead; they starved 04:55 to death. 04:56 So, there's a lot of misunderstandings. 05:00 But the beast, even in Revelation 13, is a power. 05:03 It's talking about a political, religious power. 05:07 All right, next, Daniel sees a goat appears in this vision, 05:11 with a great big horn between its eyes, Daniel 8:5. 05:15 What does this mean? 05:17 The angel comes later to tell us. 05:19 "The male goat is the kingdom of--" by the way, a male goat is 05:22 what we'd call a Billy goat. 05:24 "The male goat is the kingdom of--" what--"Greece. 05:28 And the large horn that is between his eyes is the 05:31 first king." 05:33 And now who do you think this first king is? 05:36 It's Alexander the Great. 05:39 And, as for the broken horn, he, 33 and he died at the zenith of 05:45 his power, says he died, "and that four horns stand up in its 05:49 place, four--" what--"kingdoms shall arise out of that nation, 05:53 but not with the same power." 05:55 They did not have the consolidation of power that 05:57 Alexander the Great had. 05:59 So you've got this goat, this Billy goat--I don't know if 06:02 you've ever been butted by a Billy goat, but I had a neighbor 06:05 that once had me take care of his goats while he was gone. 06:07 He said, "Watch out for Billy." 06:08 They're very creative; they named their Billy goat, Billy. 06:11 And so they said, "Watch out for Billy." 06:13 And, boy, you turn your back to do anything, that goat is 06:16 just waiting. 06:17 His whole life revolves around hoping that you will turn 06:20 your back. 06:21 And he charged me, and, fortunately, he kind of reached 06:23 the end of his chain, so I did not get the full brunt of him. 06:27 But they look for opportunities to charge. 06:30 This goat charges the ram, the sheep, the male sheep, and 06:34 kills it. 06:35 And Alexander destroyed the Persians, but--and he's really 06:40 an incredible soldier. 06:42 You think about it; just in 12 years--He had Aristotle for 06:45 a teacher. 06:46 In 12 years, he marched his soldiers 22,000 miles. 06:52 He conquered the world, but he could not conquer himself. 06:54 He died from either malaria or alcoholism, drinking too much, a 07:00 fever, at 33 years of age. 07:03 And, as he was dying, they said, "Who will rule in your place?" 07:07 And he is said to have responded, "The strongest." 07:12 Well, his generals--He had a young son that was not old 07:16 enough to rule. 07:17 His generals sort of fought and divided up the kingdom into 07:19 four parts. 07:20 This is exactly what the prophecy said would happen. 07:23 And there you've got a map of the Ancient Macedonian or 07:26 Greek Empire. 07:28 You could see the influence of Alexander went all the way from 07:31 Greece to the borders of India, into Egypt, and up north 07:35 into Turkey. 07:36 And it was amazing how much ground he covered and the 07:39 influence of his conquest; that's why the Bible is written 07:42 in Greek, the New Testament, because it became the language 07:45 of education all through that part of the world back then. 07:50 Divided up Lysimachus and Cassander and Ptolemy and 07:55 Seleucus, the different Generals of Alexander, and then it went 07:58 through a lot of carving up and intrigue after that. 08:02 Then the vision, as you read on, it says, from one of the four 08:06 horns--or the four divisions of Alexander's kingdom--"a little 08:11 horn sprouts," Daniel 8, verse 9. 08:14 What power does it represent? 08:16 Says, "It came to pass--" 08:18 You look in Luke chapter 2, what 08:19 power came after the Greeks? 08:23 "It came to pass in those days 08:24 that a decree went out from--" 08:26 who--"from Caesar Augustus that 08:28 all the world should 08:29 be registered." 08:31 You can also look in John 19:15, 08:32 "Pilate said to them, 'Shall I 08:34 crucify your king?' 08:36 And the chief priests answered, 'We have no king but Caesar!'" 08:39 It's kind of frightening, and it was Caesar who had expelled all 08:42 the Jews from Rome in the days when Paul was out preaching. 08:47 So you've got this goat that had the four--one central horn is 08:51 broken off; Alexander dies; his four generals divide up 08:54 the kingdom. 08:55 From one of the four, the general that occupied and ruled 08:59 the territory where Rome is, he lost his power. 09:03 And Rome began to grow into an empire until they conquered the 09:07 Greeks in about 168 BC, and they continued to grow. 09:12 Now, something you're going to notice with each one of these 09:14 empires, they're stronger than the one before. 09:19 Talks about this strong ram, and then this very strong goat, and 09:25 then this exceedingly strong little horn. 09:30 And you'll also notice, when you get to the vision in Daniel 09:32 chapter 2, it says that you've got--each kingdom has a harder 09:37 metal than the one before. 09:39 What's harder, silver or gold? 09:41 Silver. 09:42 What's harder, bronze or silver? 09:44 Bronze. 09:46 What's harder, iron or bronze? 09:48 Iron. 09:49 What's harder, stone or iron? 09:52 Stone. 09:53 Yes, because the clay and the iron, that's concrete. 09:57 And, by the way, it's a stone that destroys the whole thing. 10:00 And you'll notice, in that vision in Daniel 2--I'm 10:02 assuming some of you have read it--that there's a progression. 10:05 Each one of these kingdoms lasts longer; each empire lasts longer 10:10 than the one before it. 10:11 This has all been fulfilled. 10:13 This is so exciting to me; it's all been fulfilled by the 10:15 history books. 10:16 So, now, just back up a little bit. 10:19 Number four: What time prophecy--we're going to study 10:22 the longest time prophecy in the Bible in the time that remains. 10:25 What time prophecy is introduced into the vision? 10:29 It says, "For--" what's the number--"two thousand three 10:32 hundred days; then shall the sanctuary be cleansed." 10:38 Now, is that talking about 2,300 days, literal days, or, when you 10:42 have a prophecy like this, what is a day? 10:46 The Bible tells us, if you look in Ezekiel chapter 4, verse 6, 10:51 "I have laid on you a day for each year." 10:55 In prophecy, a day equals a year. 10:58 The children of Israel, when they had the spies, those 12 11:00 spies went through the promised land for 40 days, but they did 11:03 not believe--at least 10 of them. 11:04 Moses said, "Because you did not believe, for every day they 11:07 wandered, there'll be a year." 11:10 And then Jesus says, in Luke chapter 13--After John the 11:14 Baptist was imprisoned by Herod, some messengers came to Jesus. 11:17 They said, "You know, John's been beheaded. 11:19 You better be careful. 11:20 Herod's got his eye on you." 11:21 Listen how Jesus responds, "Go tell that fox--" meaning Herod-- 11:26 "I teach and do cures and cast out devils today, tomorrow, and 11:32 the third day I will be perfected--" or completed. 11:36 Did Jesus preach three more days or three more years? 11:39 Three more years after the execution of John. 11:42 So, even Jesus, making a prophecy, used a day for a year. 11:46 So, when it says 2,300 days, what are we really reading? 11:50 Two thousand three hundred years, all right, so this is a 11:53 prophecy in Daniel 8; he's talking about this beast power 11:58 that was going to persecute God's people, this little horn. 12:00 Well, did the Roman power persecute God's people? 12:04 They had one point, then they destroyed--not only did they 12:06 occupy Israel, not only were the Romans instrumental in executing 12:10 Jesus, then they began to persecute Christians and Jews, 12:15 ultimately destroying the Jewish temple and scattering the people 12:19 and enslaving them and crucifying 2,000 of them. 12:23 And so it was a terrible persecuting power that God 12:26 warned Daniel about. 12:28 But, as they say, wait, there's more in the prophecy. 12:32 What happens at the end of the 2,300 days? 12:37 "For two thousand three hundred days; then shall the--" what-- 12:40 "the sanctuary be cleansed." 12:44 All right, if you go 2,300 years from the time of Daniel, was 12:49 there a sanctuary in Israel? 12:53 Temple had been destroyed, but did we learn last night there is 12:56 still a sanctuary on earth? 13:00 What's the sanctuary on earth? 13:01 Point to it. 13:04 You are the temple of God; we are living stones. 13:07 Is there a sanctuary in heaven still? 13:10 We have a high priest, we read in Hebrews; he's ministering 13:13 before the real throne of God in heaven. 13:17 So what is his prophecy? 13:19 Two thousand three hundred days of sanctuary be cleansed; 13:21 cleansed from what? 13:24 The Bible tells us; you read a little; go back a few verses, in 13:28 Daniel 8:12, "He--" the beast power--"cast the truth down to 13:34 the ground. 13:35 He did all this, he practiced, and he prospered." 13:39 There would be a great falling away that would come into the 13:42 church through this beast power during the dark ages. 13:47 And this is what happened to Christianity. 13:48 So there would be a cleansing from the errors of that time and 13:53 a cleansing from sin in heaven, and it would--this movement, 13:59 this cleansing, would begin 2,300 days after a 14:05 starting point. 14:07 But there's a problem here. 14:09 In Daniel chapter 8, Daniel faints. 14:12 I don't know if you got your Bibles handy. 14:15 The angel gives Daniel this prophecy, and you go to the last 14:19 verse in chapter 8, and he says, "Seal of the vision, for it 14:22 refers to many days in the future--" I'm reading Daniel 14:25 8:26--"and I--" Daniel-- "fainted and was sick for 14:30 days afterward. 14:31 I arose and went about the king's business because I was 14:33 astonished by the vision and no one understood it." 14:37 Now, Daniel is given a vision; he tells them that the vision is 14:40 going to be 2,300 days, or 2,300 years, but, in order to know 14:43 what that means, you need a starting point. 14:46 Does that make sense? 14:47 Otherwise, how do you get an ending point? 14:49 It doesn't mean anything; it's just floating out 14:51 there anywhere. 14:53 Daniel 9 conveniently--Keep in mind, in the Bible, there were 14:58 no chapters originally; those were added years later by 15:01 scholars that were reading so they could find things 15:03 more easily. 15:04 Daniel 8 flows into Daniel 9, 15:07 and another vision happens. 15:09 In Daniel 9, Daniel is given 15:11 another time prophecy. 15:13 How is this time prophecy 15:14 related to the 2,300 days? 15:17 They've got the same 15:18 starting period. 15:19 "O Daniel, I have come forth to give you understanding. 15:22 Therefore consider the matter, and understand the--" 15:25 What vision--? 15:27 The one he had just given him, in the previous chapter. 15:29 "Seventy weeks are determined for your people and for the 15:34 holy city." 15:35 This is called the 490-year prophecy. 15:38 When I first studied this, I was in the mountains living by 15:40 myself like a hermit in a cave. 15:42 And God had worked it out where I was just by myself, and I had 15:44 my Bible and some good books. 15:46 And, when I read this and I finally understood this 15:48 prophecy, I'll just tell you, I was by myself, and I was jumping 15:52 up and down praising the Lord, scaring all the lizards and 15:55 snakes because, I thought to myself, "Jesus came right on 16:00 time the first time." 16:02 And He said, "I'm coming again." 16:03 He is going to come. 16:05 It was longer than maybe Daniel had hoped, but He did come, and 16:09 He promised He would come again. 16:12 Number seven: When is the start date for the 70 week and 2,300 16:17 day prophecies? 16:19 There's only one date given for both prophecies; it's the only 16:21 starting period. 16:22 What is that starting point? 16:23 He gives it to us in Daniel 9:25, "Know therefore and 16:27 understand, that from the going forth of the commandment to 16:31 restore and build Jerusalem until the Messiah the Prince, 16:34 shall be seven weeks and sixty-two weeks." 16:38 Now, the going forth of the commandment was given by 16:43 Artaxerxes I. 16:44 There were actually three commands that 16:47 gave the Jews permission to go back, and Darius gave a command 16:50 to do certain things. 16:52 But the final command that's listed there, in Ezra chapter 7; 16:55 you can look it up for yourself; it's right there in the Bible; 16:58 that's our starting point; it's a date in history we're very 17:02 sure of because we know that Artaxerxes I, he followed 17:06 Xerxes, who was assassinated. 17:08 And we know, based on the Persian calendar, what year of 17:13 the reign it would be when he issued this decree. 17:15 We know what years Ezra went with the captives back, and you 17:21 can do the math and figure it out; it's 457 BC. 17:25 So you can even take out your calculator and figure this out. 17:28 If you go 7 weeks plus 62 weeks, at 69 weeks, 69 weeks is 17:36 483 years. 17:38 If you go 483 years from 457 BC, it comes to 27 AD. 17:46 What happens there? 17:50 Jesus comes to John in the wilderness, and He's baptized. 17:55 And I am so thankful for Luke; Luke, he pegs that time period 18:02 as just the best historian in history. 18:05 He says, In the 15th year of the reign of Tiberius Caesar, he 18:09 tells Pilate was governor of Judea. 18:12 He talks about Philip; he talks about everybody, and there's 18:15 only one time in Roman history when all these rulers 18:17 overlapped, and it's 27 AD. 18:20 So it's just a really well-established date, and I'm 18:23 just thankful that God made it easy for us to figure these 18:26 things out. 18:27 Number 8: What other important events are revealed from the 18:31 start date of the 70-week prophecy? 18:34 Well, it also said, in Daniel 9:25, "From the going forth of 18:38 the command to restore and build Jerusalem until--" who-- 18:41 "Messiah--" who's that; that's Jesus--"the Prince, shall be 18:47 seven weeks and sixty-two weeks." 18:49 See, the reason it breaks off seven weeks separately is it 18:52 took 49 years for them to finish establishing the city, 18:56 rebuilding, building the walls, and becoming an independent 19:00 group again. 19:02 And so He breaks it up that way, but then there's another 62 19:05 weeks from the completion of them having independence that 19:08 way, until the Messiah comes. 19:10 Now, I've got a little chart up on the screen; it's going 19:12 to grow. 19:14 So you've got the starting point 457 BC; this is the decree to 19:18 restore Jerusalem; it's the third and final decree 19:21 by Artaxerxes. 19:22 And, if you go 483 years, it comes to the baptism of Jesus. 19:27 But, if you go 2,300 years, it comes to 1844. 19:32 Well, let's take this one piece at a time. 19:34 You're probably wondering, what's, what happened then? 19:37 Look at the first part here. 19:39 You've got--it's not on the chart there, but first you've 19:43 got your 49 years of rebuilding the city. 19:46 Then you've got 483 years; it says the Messiah would be cut 19:50 off after that point, Jesus is baptized in 27 AD. 19:54 Are you still with me? 19:56 Then He confirms the covenant with many for one week, that's 20:00 seven years. 20:01 In the midst--3 1/2 years into His ministry--He is cut off, 20:07 but He's not done trying to confirm the 20:09 covenant with His people. 20:10 You know what Jesus said to the apostles? 20:11 "As the Father sent Me, so send I you." 20:15 Jesus healed the sick; He raised the dead. 20:17 The apostles healed the sick; they raised the dead. 20:20 Jesus preached the gospel; they preached the gospel. 20:23 Jesus said, "I'm sent to the lost sheep." 20:25 They went just to the lost sheep. 20:26 Until the supreme court condemned Stephen, after hearing 20:30 the gospel, and executed him, God was especially focusing the 20:34 message on His people. 20:36 "After the sixty-two weeks Messiah shall be--" what--"cut 20:41 off, but not for Himself. 20:43 And He'll confirm the covenant with many for one week; but in 20:47 the middle of the week He'll bring an end to sacrifice 20:50 and offering." 20:51 Jesus, 3 1/2 years after He began his ministry, He died on a 20:56 cross outside of Jerusalem. 20:58 The veil of the temple was torn, there was an earthquake, graves 21:01 were opened. 21:02 It was the end of the sacrificial system. 21:05 Paul says, "Now Christ is our Passover." 21:08 You don't need to kill lambs anymore. 21:10 Circumcision is nothing. Uncircumcision is nothing. 21:12 But keeping the commandments is what matters. 21:15 It's what Paul says. 21:16 All right, so, looking once again, you've got, you see in 21:20 the midst of that last week, 3 1/2 years in person, 3 1/2 years 21:25 through those who heard Him. 21:27 It says, "He confirmed the covenant first Himself, then 21:31 through those who heard Him," the apostles and the disciples. 21:35 And it was in the midst of that last seven, Jesus died on 21:38 the cross. 21:39 Friends, this is so amazing to me; it all fits perfectly. 21:42 How could God control time and events and see this far in 21:45 advance so perfectly? 21:48 So, when He says He's coming again, can we trust Him? 21:52 Number nine: What happened at the end of the 70-week prophecy? 21:55 "Seventy weeks are determined 21:57 for your people, for the holy 21:59 city, to finish the 22:00 transgression, to make an end of 22:02 sins, to make reconciliation 22:04 for iniquity, to bring in 22:05 everlasting righteousness, to 22:07 seal up the vision and prophecy, 22:09 and anoint the Most Holy." 22:10 All of those things happened 22:13 just as God said. 22:14 So, you see, that prophecy, the charts up there, reaches all the 22:17 way from 457 to 1844, and it's also the 490-year prophecy that 22:23 tells us about the time cut off for the Jewish nation. 22:27 Number ten: On what date did the 2,300-day prophecy end? 22:34 Revelation 14:7, "Fear God and give glory to Him, for the hour 22:39 of His judgment has come." 22:41 We entered a phase of the first judgment. 22:44 I told you there's three phases of judgment. 22:46 The judgment that happens before Jesus comes has begun. 22:52 And Christ is now--He's entered into a special final phase with 22:55 the Father. 22:57 You might call it the day of atonement, heavenly, interceding 23:00 for His people. 23:02 Number eleven: What is the pre-advent judgment? 23:05 It tells us, in 1 Peter chapter 4, "For the time has come for 23:09 judgment to begin--" where--"at the house of God." 23:13 So where does this judgment principally begin? 23:16 Jesus is not judging the lost world during this time because 23:19 He, Jesus said, "They're already condemned." 23:23 It's those who have taken His name to see if they're sincere, 23:27 you know. 23:29 Jesus said, "You'll know them by--" what--"their fruits." 23:31 Do they have the fruits of the Spirit? 23:32 Didn't Jesus curse a tree that had leaves and no fruit? 23:36 He went and He looked it over and found no fruit. 23:38 He wants us to have the fruits of the Spirit, and this is what 23:41 He said about the vine, in John 15. 23:43 How many of you have read in your Bibles, Ezekiel chapter 9, 23:47 where it says that there's a judgment that begins at the 23:50 house of God?
