00:17 about Bible prophecy.
00:19 Explore the timeless wisdom of God's Word, and see how it
00:23 relates to our lives today.
00:25 Stay tuned, your "Amazing Facts" adventure begins now.
00:31 Doug Batchelor : We've got a problem and it's called sin.
00:35 And we have an answer called a Savior.
00:39 We've got a problem with this disease of sin in our natures,
00:45 and it is deadly, and Jesus came to take that deadly disease, to
00:50 take the penalty for that and to save us.
00:53 So I've kind of told you what the problem and the answer is
00:55 right here at the beginning, but I always like to start with an
00:58 amazing fact, and so we're going to go to the screen, and see
01:02 what we learn about this important subject along the way.
01:06 The largest meteorite that they've ever found on Earth is
01:10 called the Hoba space rock.
01:13 It was discovered in Namibia in 1920 when a farmer was
01:18 doing--when he was working with his plow, and he struck
01:23 something, and he thought, what is that?
01:25 And he dug around a little bit and it was a piece of iron.
01:28 But he kept digging and it kept getting bigger and bigger and
01:32 bigger, until pretty soon he realized he had found this
01:35 massive rock, they discovered after a while, it was a
01:38 meteorite over 9 feet long and maybe 9 feet wide, and largest
01:46 meteorite that they've ever found.
01:48 Several people have come and tried to chisel off pieces of
01:52 it, but it is so hard it breaks virtually every hacksaw blade
01:56 and chisel that they take to it.
01:59 They've never moved it from the place where it struck the earth
02:04 because it weighs about 66 tons.
02:07 And so it is a massive--a rock of ages you might say, and
02:12 thousands of tourists every year come to look at the
02:15 Hoba meteorite.
02:17 You know the Bible tells us that God, when He gave us the most
02:21 important words, The Ten Commandments, He wrote it with
02:26 finger on stone representing its unchanging nature, and that is
02:31 the law of God.
02:33 So we're going to be talking tonight about this very
02:36 important subject.
02:37 And you know, before we go to our first question, sometimes we
02:40 like to go out on the streets and see what we can learn
02:43 about that.
02:44 And so if--at this time, we're going to go find out what do
02:47 people think about the law, does it still exist, and maybe
02:51 something about the answer as well.
02:54 male: I think it's important that we have laws of society
02:56 because it keeps things stable by creating a level of
03:00 consistency and knowing that justice will be served to
03:05 everyone, hopefully, equally, even though that doesn't
03:08 always happen.
03:09 female: To keep people in line, to know that somebody's going to
03:12 do something, you know.
03:13 male: You got to keep things in order, honestly, really, got to
03:15 keep things in order.
03:17 Run around lawless, it's going to be chaos, you know.
03:20 female: People need guidelines.
03:22 You know, just as a little child, you know, they need rules
03:25 to follow, and if there are no rules which are laws, it could
03:29 be chaos.
03:30 male: Not one in particular that stands out--anything more
03:34 important than the rest.
03:36 female: Probably not to covet your neighbor.
03:41 Be happy with what you have, not worry about what everybody
03:44 else has.
03:45 male: Thou shalt not kill or murder.
03:48 female: I can't name them all, but thou shall not kill, I'm not
03:52 real sure.
03:53 male: Well, that's as if you were--to the Jewish religion, if
03:56 you went into the Jewish religion, because the Old
03:58 Testament's still sort of believed by Christians, but they
04:02 don't believe--you know, they obviously believe the Son of God
04:04 came and gave them a new Bible, so, yeah.
04:09 male: By the law, no.
04:11 female: Yeah.
04:13 male: I'm not sure, I don't know.
04:16 Doug: Once again, we find that people's ideas about how do you
04:20 relate to the law of God are all across the map.
04:24 You know, what we've done before, it's really interesting,
04:25 is you go out on the street and you say, "Have you heard of the
04:28 Ten Commandments?"
04:30 People will say, "Yeah."
04:32 "Okay, can you name them for me?"
04:34 You know, the average person on the street can only get about
04:37 four out of ten of the commandments.
04:41 It is incredible.
04:42 When our country was founded, everybody knew it,
04:45 I remember--and I, you know, I was raised pretty much
04:47 an atheist, but I went to several
04:49 public schools, and when I was a kid
04:51 they had the Ten Commandments on the wall in public school.
04:55 How many of you remember that?
04:56 Any of the older saints want to date themselves here?
05:00 You know, question number one, we'll begin with, and we're
05:03 going to talk about this, and we've got just a lot of very
05:06 valuable information to share.
05:08 First question, who is symbolized by the Lamb in
05:11 Revelation chapter 5, verse 6?
05:13 Now if you got your Bibles,
05:15 either on your phone or the paper version, you at home, you
05:17 may turn to chapter 5, and if you look in chapter 5, verse 6
05:21 of Revelation, this is a prophecy subject.
05:25 "And I looked, and behold, in the midst of the throne and of
05:29 the four living creatures, and in the midst of the elders,
05:32 stood a Lamb as though it had been slain, having seven heads
05:37 and seven eyes, which are the seven Spirits of God sent out
05:42 into all the earth.
05:44 Then He came and He took the scroll out of the right hand of
05:46 Him who sat upon the throne."
05:49 Well, right away I think that some of you realize, are you
05:54 expecting to see a lamb with seven horns and seven eyes?
05:58 And if you get to Revelation chapter 17, it talks about a
06:01 woman sitting on a beast that's got seven heads and ten horns.
06:06 Some of you, you get out in the country, you'll see a sign that
06:08 says deer crossing, it's got a little picture of a deer.
06:11 You're never going to see beasts crossing with seven heads and
06:14 ten horns.
06:16 These things are Bible symbols, but they're not that hard
06:19 to understand.
06:21 If you want to know who the Lamb is, you can read about this
06:24 right there in the New Testament.
06:27 It says, Jesus is the Lamb of God.
06:29 Now what does it mean by the seven eyes on the Lamb, and the
06:35 seven horns?
06:37 Jesus is the Lamb, seven eyes represent all-knowing, all
06:41 the time.
06:42 The Bible says, the eyes of the Lord run to and fro through the
06:45 whole earth.
06:47 And that's in 2 Chronicles, and you can read--what about the
06:50 seven spirits of God?
06:52 Isaiah 11, verse 2 talks about the Messiah would have, "The
06:55 Spirit of the Lord will rest upon Him, the Spirit of wisdom,
06:59 understanding, Spirit of counsel, might, Spirit of
07:01 knowledge, and the fear of the Lord."
07:03 These are seven facets or attributes of God's Spirit, but
07:07 it's one Spirit and there's one Jesus, it's just telling us that
07:12 he sees everything and he knows everything, and a horn in the
07:17 Bible represented power.
07:19 Luke chapter 1:68,
07:21 "Blessed be the Lord God of Israel, he's visited
07:23 his redeemed people," talks about the horn
07:26 of His power and of salvation.
07:29 And so these symbols that you find in Revelation are telling
07:32 us different things about the characteristics of God.
07:36 When you think of the name of Jesus, we typically say it, it's
07:40 connected with a Greek translation.
07:43 If you're Spanish, you say Jesus, Jesus, Hebrew would be
07:47 Yeshua, and it means Savior.
07:50 Jehovah is Savior is what His name means.
07:53 Revelation, you know how many names the Lord has?
07:56 He's the Alpha, the Omega, He is the Door, the Bible says He's
08:00 the Good Shepherd, He's the Way, the Truth, the Life, He is the
08:04 Living Water, He is the Vine, and we are the branches.
08:09 He is the Light of the world, He is the High Priest.
08:12 I mean, there are many names of Christ that tell us different
08:16 attributes of His character, because He's God, He's rather
08:19 complicated, you know.
08:21 He's got a lot of different characteristics.
08:24 So we see this picture there in Revelation chapter 5, of a Lamb
08:29 that was slain.
08:30 It is the solution for the problem of a law that
08:34 was broken.
08:35 We'll be talking about that tonight.
08:37 So next, you can read in John 1, verse 29, we know who the
08:41 Lamb is.
08:43 It says, "John saw," who?
08:44 "Jesus coming towards him, and he said, 'Behold!
08:47 The Lamb.'"
08:48 So who's the lamb?
08:50 Jesus.
08:52 Abraham is going up the mountain with his son Isaac.
08:55 Abraham has been told by the Lord, I want you to offer your
08:58 son as a sacrifice.
09:00 Obediently, he heads up Mount Moriah, the wood is placed on
09:04 Isaac's back, as the cross was placed on the back of Jesus.
09:09 And Abraham has the makings of a fire and Isaac is going, he
09:13 sacrificed with his father many times before, but something's
09:16 missing today.
09:18 Says, "Father," Abraham had been unusually quiet.
09:22 He says, "Yes my son."
09:24 He said, "We've got the wood, and we've got the fire, but
09:29 where is the lamb?"
09:31 And Abraham said, in those words that have echoed down through
09:34 history, "My son, God will provide Himself a lamb."
09:40 And when they got to the top of the mountain, just--Isaac was a
09:45 willing sacrifice as Jesus was.
09:48 He allowed his father to tie him up.
09:50 And before the knife came down, God stopped him and said,
09:53 "Abraham, Abraham, do not harm the lad."
09:56 And He pointed to a ram, a male lamb, caught by his horns in a
10:01 thicket, and the word there in Hebrew is a thorn bush, a male
10:05 ram with a crown of thorns.
10:07 Jesus wore a crown of thorns for you and me.
10:10 Jesus is the Lamb of God that takes away the sin of the world.
10:14 The whole sacrificial system all pointed to Christ.
10:17 What can wash away in my sins, not the blood of lambs and goats
10:21 and bulls, nothing but the blood of Jesus, amen.
10:26 You know that.
10:27 So Jesus is that Lamb that you see all through the Bible.
10:30 In the beginning, when Adam and Eve had sinned, they tried to
10:34 cover their sin with what?
10:36 Fig leaves.
10:38 God said that will not work.
10:39 First of all, it says they made aprons of leaf, an apron--it was
10:43 like a mini skirt.
10:45 So it was the wrong material and not nearly enough material.
10:48 People still do that today with not nearly enough material.
10:52 And it said God gave them tunics, the word there is robes
10:57 of skin.
10:59 God did not suddenly speak vinyl naugahyde into existence.
11:04 It was an imitation skin.
11:06 God established a sacrificial system.
11:09 A lamb needed to die to cover their nakedness, and Jesus
11:13 needed to die to cover our nakedness, and Revelation tells
11:15 us that He provides beautiful white robes of glory for us in
11:20 heaven, amen.
11:21 Prodigal son comes home, the Father covers his filth with his
11:26 best robe, and Jesus died to provide those robes for you
11:30 and me.
11:31 Question number two: why was it necessary for Jesus to suffer
11:36 and die?
11:38 The Bible tells us, Romans 3:23, "For," how many?
11:43 "All have sinned and fallen short of the glory of God."
11:48 Second part, it says, "For the wages of sin are," what?
11:50 "Death."
11:52 We've all sinned, the penalty is death, but we're
11:56 still alive, why?
11:58 Because God sent His Son into the world to--for a couple
12:01 of reasons.
12:02 One, to die in behalf of those who will accept His sacrifice
12:05 and the new heart He offers, and, why are the wicked
12:09 still alive?
12:11 Jesus died to buy them time to make a decision, otherwise you
12:15 drop dead the first time you sin.
12:18 Everybody's alive because of the grace of God, amen.
12:22 But a lot of people are living under probation and it's going
12:25 to end unless they turn to Christ and accept His sacrifice.
12:31 The Bible says Christ died for our sins.
12:34 We have all sinned.
12:36 We are all guilty and sometimes we think the sins are just
12:40 little things like, oh, I ate a cookie between dessert and
12:43 dinner, and I wasn't supposed to.
12:46 Sin is deadly.
12:49 The Bible says the penalty for sin is death.
12:51 It's contagious and it's deadly.
12:54 1 Peter 3:18, "For Christ also suffered once, the just for
13:01 the unjust."
13:02 He is just, He took our place.
13:06 I used to sing a song, it was He paid a debt He did not owe,
13:12 I owed a debt I could not pay.
13:15 I needed someone to wash my sin away.
13:18 So what is sin?
13:21 The Bible tells us, what does Revelation call this plan to
13:25 save people from death?
13:27 This is from prophecy, Revelation chapter 14, verse 6.
13:30 This is in what they call the first angel's message of
13:33 Revelation 14, "Having the everlasting gospel," the word
13:38 gospel means the everlasting good news.
13:41 The gospel is very good news because of the bad news.
13:45 The bad news is the world is dying.
13:48 The whole creation groans and travails.
13:51 We are dying, from the time you are born, you're about as
13:54 perfect as you're going to be.
13:56 But from that time, you are on a conveyor belt to the grave.
14:01 It is a certain thing.
14:03 You have a life to live.
14:05 Someone said once, one life to live will soon be passed, only
14:09 what's done for Christ will last.
14:12 Most important thing in life is to know God in His love and
14:16 share God and His love.
14:17 That's it.
14:18 Two great commandments, love the Lord with all your heart, love
14:21 your neighbor.
14:23 We've got to learn how to love, and that's the purpose of the
14:25 plan of salvation.
14:26 The good news is we're dying, but Jesus said, I don't want
14:28 you to die, I will die for you.
14:32 I will take all of your sins and die in your place, if
14:35 we believe.
14:36 It's the plan of salvation called the gospel, the
14:39 good news.
14:40 Sometimes it's so good people have trouble believing it.
14:44 They say, "How can I believe that?
14:46 I've got to earn it somehow."
14:49 I remember hearing one time about this man, he worked in a
14:53 mine and a preacher was doing an evangelistic meeting, and the
14:56 evangelist was telling these miners every night, come to
14:59 Jesus, He'll forgive your sins.
15:01 And the minor met the evangelist afterward and he said, "I don't
15:05 understand how--that doesn't seem like it's fair.
15:07 I mean, I've got to do something to earn it.
15:10 How can He just give it to me, I've sinned."
15:14 And the evangelist said, "You go to work every day, right, at
15:18 the mine?"
15:19 "Yeah."
15:21 Says, "You take an elevator way down, don't you?"
15:22 Said, "I do."
15:23 He said, "Do you have to pay for that elevator?"
15:27 He said, "No."
15:28 He said, "Did someone have to pay for that elevator to bring
15:30 you back up?"
15:32 "Yes, very expensive."
15:34 He said, "God has paid for the elevator to get you back up.
15:40 You've gone down, but He'll bring you back up."
15:43 According to the Bible, what is sin?
15:46 Jesus came to save us from sin, what is sin?
15:49 You got several definitions.
15:51 The simplest is found in 1 John 3, verse 4, "Sin
15:54 is lawlessness."
15:57 If you've got the King James Version, it says, "Sin is the
15:59 transgression of the law."
16:02 When you break the law of God, it's a sin.
16:06 Now the Ten Commandments, they talk about things like don't
16:09 lie, don't rob, don't kill, don't steal.
16:13 When you disobey His law, it's sin.
16:17 And the penalty for sin is death, because it destroys, it's
16:23 a cancer that destroys all happiness.
16:25 It is completely contrary to the nature of God and His universe,
16:31 "For by the law," Romans 3:20, "Is the knowledge of sin."
16:35 The law isn't there to save us from sin, the law shows us
16:37 our sin.
16:39 Question number five: can God's moral law be changed
16:44 or repealed?
16:45 Now when we talk about the moral law, we are talking about the
16:48 Ten Commandments.
16:50 There are many laws in the Bible.
16:53 You've got the civil laws that Moses gave.
16:56 Many governments of the world also still follow the civil law.
17:00 In fact, if you go to the Supreme Court building, right
17:03 there at the very pinnacle on the outside, you're going to see
17:05 Moses, it's sitting and he's got the Ten Commandments straddled
17:09 on his lap, because it is the most concise, complete
17:16 coalescing of God's law that you're going to find anywhere.
17:21 So answer--Luke 16, verse 17, Jesus said, "It is easier for a
17:27 heaven and earth to," what?
17:29 "Pass away than for one tittle," the word tittle is--it means a
17:33 crossing of a T, for--
17:36 "To fail from the law."
17:38 Heaven and earth must pass away first.
17:39 You know, in Revelation, it talks about the ark of God in
17:41 heaven.
17:43 God's got a copy up there.
17:44 You have to get rid of heaven to get rid of God's law.
17:48 Again, Psalm 89, verse 34, "My covenant I will not break, nor
17:55 alter the word that is proceeded from My lips."
17:59 When God gave the Ten Commandments, He spoke it with
18:01 His own mouth, He wrote it with His own finger in the presence
18:05 of an entire nation.
18:07 Never before or since has He done anything like that, where
18:10 people heard the voice of God speak.
18:12 And what did He--He spoke the Ten Commandments, so it must
18:17 be important.
18:19 Again, Psalm 111, verse 7 and 8, "All of his precepts are sure.
18:25 They stand fast for," how long?
18:27 "Forever and ever."
18:30 Malachi chapter 3, verse 6, the Lord says, "For I am the Lord, I
18:35 change not.
18:36 I do not change."
18:38 God is eternal.
18:40 He wrote His law down.
18:42 Now the reason this subject is important is you'd be surprised,
18:45 there are even pastors now that are saying, well, Jesus came to
18:48 do away with the law.
18:50 How many of you have heard that?
18:52 That's what you call a doctrine of devils.
18:56 You know why the devil hates the law?
18:58 Because the law shows us our sin.
19:01 Transgression of the law is sin.
19:04 If people don't think there's a law, they don't think they've
19:07 got sin, if they don't think they have sin, who needs Jesus?
19:11 So the devil wants to get rid of the need for the Savior, so he's
19:15 even got preachers saying we're not under the law.
19:17 Now the Bible talks about not being under the law, but it
19:20 doesn't mean you're not under obligation to obey, it means
19:23 because of Christ we are not under the penalty of the law,
19:28 but you're not free to disobey His commandments, Paul says,
19:31 "What shall we continue in sin that grace may abound?
19:33 God forbid."
19:35 We don't continue to sin--because we say, "I'm under
19:38 grace now, I can just sin."
19:40 Jesus did not die to give us a license for sin.
19:44 Because if He could do that, He didn't need to die, it's because
19:47 there was no other way, He had to die.
19:50 I'll tell you another reason God's law cannot change.
19:53 God says, "I do not change."
19:55 The law is an expression of God's character.
19:58 For example, I've got the slide up on the screen I want you to
20:00 look at.
20:02 The Bible describes characteristics of God.
20:05 You'll notice on the left side here it says God is good.
20:09 Then it also says in another verse, Romans 7:12, the law
20:12 is good.
20:13 The Bible says God is holy.
20:16 You can read that Isaiah 5:16.
20:18 It says, the law is holy.
20:21 The Bible says that God is perfect, Matthew 5:48.
20:25 The law is perfect, Psalm 19, verse 7.
20:28 1 John 4: 8, God is love.
20:31 The law is love.
20:32 We're not done.
20:34 Get your credit card out, there's more.
20:35 We'll double your order.
20:37 It says, God is righteous, I'm not even going to read
20:39 all these.
20:41 You can take your phone out and snap it,
20:42 it's also in your lesson.
20:43 God is righteous, the law is righteous; God is truth, the law
20:46 is truth; God is pure, the law is pure; God is spiritual, the
20:48 law is spiritual; God is unchangeable, the law is
20:51 unchangeable; God is eternal, the law is eternal.
20:54 So how can any Christian or Jew say that the law was changed,
20:59 you've got to get rid of God.
21:02 See, the law doesn't need changing.
21:03 The purpose for the plan of salvation is to change us, we
21:07 need changing.
21:09 We're the ones who fell.
21:12 The law is there to show us our need of Christ.
21:16 Question number six, ultimately Christ is our example, amen.
21:22 Did Jesus keep the Ten Commandments?
21:25 Answer, yes, he did.
21:27 The Bible says, "For I have kept My Father's commandments."
21:32 "But wait, Pastor Doug, doesn't the Bible say that Jesus was
21:36 a winebibber?"
21:37 No, it says his enemies accused Him of being a winebibber.
21:43 "Well, doesn't it say that He was a glutton?"
21:46 No, it says his enemies accused Him of being a glutton.
21:51 The scribes and the Pharisees, they accused Him of being a
21:54 Samaritan, He was not a Samaritan.
21:56 They said He was Beelzebub, He was not.
21:59 They said He was a deceiver, He was not.
22:01 Some people say, "Well, Jesus, you know, He didn't keep
22:03 the law."
22:04 Of course He kept the law, that's why He could die in
22:06 our behalf.
22:07 He was a perfect Savior.
22:09 It says, who committed no sin.
22:14 Jesus committed no sin, He lived a holy life, so He could be
22:18 our example.
22:19 See, Jesus came for three reasons.
22:22 He said, I've come to show you the Father.
22:26 People don't know who God is, they misunderstand.
22:28 They think God is a great big sadistic policeman in the sky
22:31 wanting to beat us up every time we do something wrong.
22:35 And Jesus said, if you've seen Me, you've seen the Father,
22:37 Jesus was patient, and loving, and compassionate, and good.
22:41 He came to show us the Father.
22:44 He came to show us how to live.
22:47 He lived 33 and a half years as a human, face--tempted in every
22:51 way as we are tempted, yet without sin.
22:54 And He said, the Bible says He's given us an example that we
22:57 should walk as He walked.
22:59 A Christian is a follower of Christ, amen.
23:02 And then He came as our substitute, our sacrifice.
23:06 After He showed us the Father and after He gives us an
23:09 example, He says, now you're not going to make it without Me.
23:12 You've sinned, your penalty is death, but I don't want to
23:14 lose you.
23:15 I love you so much I will die for you.
23:18 I will take what you deserve and I will give you what I deserve.
23:20 I will take your badness, I will give you My goodness.
23:25 I will take your sin, I'll give you My righteousness.
23:28 He trades places with us, if we believe it and accept it.
23:34 Without faith, it's impossible to please God, you must
23:36 believe it.
23:38 It's like, He gives you a check, if you don't cash it, it does
23:40 you no good.
23:41 You got to take it to the bank, friends, can you say amen?
23:44 Believe it.
23:45 He committed no sin, I read this to you.
23:48 1 Peter 2, verse 22, "Nor was deceit found in His mouth."
23:53 He lived a holy life.
23:55 Are New Testament Christians required, then, to keep the
23:59 Ten Commandments?
24:01 Oh, I thought--but we're not under the law, now we're under
24:03 grace, it's okay to disobey.
24:04 What does the Bible say, from cover to cover.
24:08 Matthew 19, verse 17, "If you want to enter into life, keep
24:13 the commandments," those are Jesus's words.
24:15 John 14:15, Christ again is speaking,
24:18 "If you love Me, keep My commandments."
24:21 "Oh wait, but Pastor Doug, you're thinking, you got the Ten
24:24 Commandments, then you've got the commandments of Jesus."
24:27 Don't fall for that, friends, they're the same thing.
24:31 Let me give you a scripture.
24:32 The Bible says all things that were made were made by Him.
24:36 Gospel of John, right?
24:39 How many things?
24:41 Who wrote the Ten Commandments?
24:44 All things that were made were made by Him, do you think Jesus
24:46 has said, well, Father, You got Your commandments, but I
24:48 got mine.
24:50 He said, I and My Father are one.
24:53 So when He says, "If you love Me, keep My commandments," it's
24:57 certainly the Ten.
24:59 And He says, "Here is the patience of the saints; here are
25:02 those that keep the commandments of God,"
25:04 and the faith of Jesus, right?
25:08 That's Revelation 14, verse 12, and you can even go to the last
25:12 chapter in the Bible, Revelation chapter 22, and it says
25:15 blessed--last chapter in the Bible, blessed are those that do
25:18 His commandments that they might have a right to enter through
