00:03 by the friends of the "Amazing Facts" Ministry. 00:06 Coming to you from New York City at the historic Manhattan Center 00:11 with your host Doug Batchelor. 00:13 Join this exciting journey of discovery as we learn the truth 00:17 about Bible prophecy, explore the timeless wisdom of God's 00:21 Word, and see how it relates to our lives today. 00:25 Stay tuned. 00:27 Your "Amazing Facts" adventure begins now. 00:31 Doug Batchelor : Hi friends, welcome back to 00:33 "Prophecy Odyssey." 00:34 In our last episode, we learned that the 10 Commandments have an 00:39 important role. 00:40 They reveal our sinfulness and our need of a savior. 00:44 Today, we're going to continue our eye opening study of 00:47 God's law. 00:48 We're going to look at an often misunderstood topic, "The Old 00:51 and The New Covenants," and we'll learn why God's law still 00:55 matters today, even though we're saved by grace. 00:58 Remember, if you'd like a deeper Bible study experience, then 01:02 check out the Prophecy Odyssey Bible lessons and our 01:05 free offer. 01:07 I'll tell you more about how to get those resources later in 01:09 the program. 01:10 So, thank you for watching and God bless as you continue your 01:14 prophecy odyssey. 01:16 Doug: So, if you look in the mirror and you see that there's 01:20 something wrong. 01:21 If you got dirt on your face, what do you do? 01:23 You put your face against the mirror and rub your face? 01:27 No, what do you do? 01:30 You need to wash. 01:32 Well I need something to wash with. 01:35 How convenient. 01:39 So, what is this? 01:41 What does it represent? 01:43 The law of God. 01:45 Is it meant to cleanse the sin? 01:48 Or it shows us our need for cleansing. 01:51 What does this red rag represent? 01:54 The blood of Jesus Christ, it's a washcloth, but it's a symbol 01:58 of the blood of Christ. 02:00 So, I look here and I see I have a problem, but this is not meant 02:02 to help me with my problem. 02:04 It is powerless. 02:06 But this can take away the problem. 02:11 And now, you know, now I look pretty good. 02:15 It doesn't bother me. 02:17 Matter of fact, you know--. 02:20 So, I--is it--well once this has happened and I've gone through 02:25 an embarrassing experience like this, every now and then, I'm 02:29 going to reference the mirror. 02:30 How many will admit? 02:31 Show of hands, get an audience shot ready. 02:35 How many will admit they have looked in the mirror today? 02:38 Hands up. 02:40 Honest group, praise God. 02:42 Now it's important to look in the mirror, but you don't want 02:45 to look in the mirror too much. 02:47 How many of you know someone that looks in the mirror a 02:48 little too much? 02:51 I saw some of you point to one another. 02:56 But you want--how many of you know people that look like 02:58 they've never looked in the mirror? 03:00 That's another problem, right? 03:02 So, we need this, don't we? 03:06 Do we need the law? 03:07 Not to save us. 03:10 We need the law to show us we need salvation. 03:13 The devil wants to get rid of this because if you don't have 03:16 this, you don't need the blood of Christ. 03:20 And so, even in some churches they are preaching doctrines of 03:23 devils that we don't need Jesus and the blood of Christ. 03:26 Well we've gotta hasten along, but I think that's a very 03:28 important point for us to remember, amen? 03:31 James 1:23, bears out the same thing, "For if anyone is a 03:35 hearer of the word and not a doer, he's like a man observing 03:38 his natural face in a mirror; for he observes himself, and 03:42 goes away, and immediately forgets what kind of man he was. 03:46 But whoever looks into the perfect law of liberty," what 03:51 does God call the 10 Commandments? 03:53 A burdensome law, law of liberty. 03:56 You know, it says in Psalm 119:45, "So I will keep Your 04:00 commandments forever and ever and I will walk at liberty 04:05 because I keep Your precepts." 04:07 Most of you are not here tonight with ankle bracelets, I'm 04:09 assuming, meaning from the government because you keep the 04:15 law, you're free, right? 04:18 That law that's supposed to put the criminals in jail. 04:23 You know, I witnessed a burglary today, not kidding. 04:25 I came home. 04:27 I told Karen I was standing in the store getting ready to check 04:29 out with the salad I bought. 04:31 I'm in line with other people. 04:32 Some guy just marched in off the street. 04:34 A girl was putting her money down. 04:35 He had been watching through the window. 04:36 He went to grab the money and the attendant tried to grab it 04:39 back out of his hand, and he got out of the store with a $1 or $2 04:42 and they went out and chased him down and got their dollar back. 04:45 Praise the Lord, but what kind of world is it, huh? 04:50 We're living in. 04:51 So, I'm glad for the laws, aren't you? 04:54 I want them enforced. 04:56 Otherwise you got chaos in your culture. 05:00 Blessed are those who keep the law who are doers of the Word. 05:05 Now I want to illustrate--I'm going put the 10 Commandments up 05:08 here on the stage here for a minute because I want to 05:10 illustrate why this is so important and how it fits in 05:13 with the theme of Bible prophecy. 05:16 So, here you got the 10 Commandments and the 10 05:19 Commandments are on how many tables of stone? 05:22 Two, the Word of God is dual in its nature. 05:25 The Bible tells us it's the law and the prophets. 05:28 In Revelation you've got two witnesses, and it's like Moses 05:32 and Elijah. 05:34 Moses is the great law giver, Elijah the great prophet. 05:36 Two scriptures at the end of the Old Testament, "Remember the law 05:40 of Moses, My servant. 05:41 Remember I send you Elijah the prophet before the great and 05:45 dreadful day of the Lord." 05:47 The first table of commandments deals with our responsibility 05:51 to God. 05:52 And for those out there that might question, this is a 05:54 summary, it's not that, you know, we couldn't fit every word 05:57 on the just to give you an idea. 05:59 First four commandments, deal with worshiping only God. 06:05 Not worshiping idols. 06:07 Do not take His name in vain. 06:09 Remember our time for God. 06:10 It's our relationship with God. 06:13 So, the first four deal with this vertical relationship. 06:18 Then you get over here and you come to the last six of the 06:21 commandments, and it deals with our relationship with our fellow 06:25 man, beginning with honor your father and mother, going down to 06:28 you shall not covet your neighbor and his goods. 06:32 What is the--if you could define God in one word, what is that 06:35 one word? 06:37 God is, say it with me, "God is love." 06:41 The 10 Commandments are love for God and love for your 06:45 fellow man. 06:47 The 10 Commandments are not bad. 06:49 Paul said all of the commandments are summarizing 06:51 this, love the Lord with all your heart and love your 06:53 neighbor as yourself. 06:55 And if you are loving the Lord with all your heart, you'll be 06:58 keeping the first four commandments, right? 06:59 If you love God, are you going to worship other gods? 07:03 No. 07:04 If you love God, you're not going to misrepresent Him by, 07:07 you know, worshiping idols. 07:10 You're not going to use His name in vain. 07:11 You're going to want your time with God. 07:13 And if you love your fellow man, you're not going to rob, 07:16 take his wife, kill him, lie, covet, honor your 07:21 parents, correct? 07:23 And so, love is the fulfilling of the law. 07:26 The law is good. 07:28 It is just and holy and good. 07:29 So, God gave His law in the most majestic way He could. 07:33 What could God do that He left out to show us the importance of 07:37 the law? 07:38 Spoke it with His own voice from a mountain, thunder and 07:41 lightning, smoke and fire, wrote it with His finger, wrote it in 07:44 stone to show it as unchanging. 07:48 And yet there are even Christians now say, "I don't 07:50 need to worry about the 10 Commandments because Jesus died 07:52 for our sins, we can break them." 07:54 That's blasphemous. 07:56 That's not what the Bible teaches. 07:58 I mean, you know, my problem before I came to Christ was 08:01 sin, lawlessness. 08:03 I don't want to tell you too much too soon or you may not 08:05 come back, but I used to be a thief. 08:09 Yeah, and I was that guy who would go in the store and take 08:13 something and not pay for it or break into homes or steal cars, 08:19 and all the other commandments. 08:22 So, Jesus saved me. 08:25 I stopped doing that. 08:26 Aren't you glad? 08:28 So, this is what the purpose is to save us from our sins. 08:33 The Bible says, "Blessed," how many want to be blessed? 08:36 "Blessed are those who do His commandments." 08:39 Jesus said, "If you know these things, happy are you if you 08:43 do them. 08:44 Not hearers only, but doers." 08:45 Number eight, what's the difference between the new and 08:49 the old covenant? 08:50 This is important to understand. 08:52 Some people say, "Well Pastor Doug, we are now under the 08:57 new covenant. 08:58 We--the 10 Commandments are part of the old covenant." 09:00 Well 10 Commandments are part of the old covenant. 09:02 You can read about that in Exodus chapter 20, and you can 09:06 read about it in Deuteronomy 5, and you can read about it in 09:08 Deuteronomy 4, which says God declared unto them His covenant, 09:12 even 10 commandments which He commanded them to perform. 09:16 And when God spoke the 10 Commandments, the people made an 09:19 agreement, that's a covenant, an agreement. 09:22 They made an agreement that said, "All the Lord has said we 09:24 will do." 09:26 Before 40 days went by, they made a golden calf and they 09:31 broke the covenant. 09:32 So, the old covenant, the Old Testament, Old Testament, Old 09:37 Covenant, same words, was broken in the Old Testament. 09:41 Where do you think you find the new covenant? 09:46 In the Old Testament. 09:48 The first place you find the new covenant is, you'll find it in 09:52 Jeremiah chapter 33. 09:54 He says, "A new covenant I'll make with the house of Israel 09:57 after those days. 09:59 I'll write My law on their hearts." 10:02 He'll put his law within us. 10:04 This is what it says in Ezekiel, "He gives us hearts of flesh. 10:08 He takes a stony heart." 10:09 Even Moses said, "I command you this day to love the Lord 10:12 your God." 10:14 The new covenant, we're all saved under the new covenant. 10:17 It's the new heart. 10:19 So, the difference between the old covenant and the new 10:21 covenant is not the law, it's where it's written. 10:26 "I will write My law," new covenant. 10:28 "I will write My law in their hearts." 10:30 You also find it in the New Covenant in Hebrews chapter 8 10:32 and other places. 10:34 So, the new covenant is, "My law that doesn't change is now 10:38 written not on stone, but on the fleshly tablets of 10:42 their hearts." 10:44 How much easier it is to obey God when you love Him. 10:50 Let me give you an example. 10:52 Are you aware there's a law that says you're not supposed to 10:54 murder your children? 10:56 How many know there's a law? 10:58 How many of you have children? 11:01 How many don't murder your children because of the law? 11:08 I saw a couple of hands go. 11:13 Most of you don't murder your children because you love them. 11:16 Do you go home, "Man, I'd sure like to murder them, but I'll be 11:18 in jail. 11:20 I can't, you know, I'm going to get arrested." 11:22 Otherwise, they just--you don't think about it because you 11:26 love them. 11:28 I love my wife. 11:30 I've never cheated on my wife. 11:32 I don't think about it because I love her. 11:36 Love is the fulfilling of the law. 11:39 And so, the new covenant is we learn to love God, you don't 11:42 want to do anything that will hurt Him. 11:45 And because you love God, you don't want to do anything that 11:47 will hurt your brothers and sisters. 11:49 This is what it means to have the new birth, to be born again. 11:55 So, that's--I think you understand the difference there 11:57 between the old and the new covenant. 12:00 "He declared unto you His covenant that He commanded you 12:02 to perform ten commandments; wrote them on tables of stone." 12:06 And then it says, "Finding fault with them," what was the fault 12:09 in the old covenant? 12:10 The law or the people? 12:12 He says, "I'll make a new covenant with the house of 12:14 Israel and the house of Judah." 12:16 By the way, nowhere in the Bible does God ever make a new 12:19 covenant with Gentiles. 12:22 You notice that? 12:23 Both in the Old and the New Testament it says, "I'll make a 12:26 new covenant with the house of Israel." 12:28 If you're a Christian, you become grafted into the stock 12:31 of Israel. 12:32 The Bible says, "If you are Christ, you are Abraham's seed." 12:36 We get to partake of that covenant, and we're all saved. 12:39 We become spiritual Israel, if you will. 12:42 Number nine, what is it called when we're converted and given a 12:46 new heart? 12:47 Well I just touched on this. 12:49 It's that wonderful spiritual metamorphosis where we go from 12:54 being a worm to a butterfly. 12:56 You're born again. 12:58 You must be what? 13:00 Born again. 13:01 A new birth, it's something--the old things pass away and all 13:05 things are made new. 13:07 Number ten, what must I do to be forgiven and cleansed from sin? 13:14 Now this is very important for us to understand. 13:17 There's--Jesus died for the sins of the whole world. 13:20 Will the whole world be saved? 13:21 No. 13:23 Unfortunately, Jesus said, "Straight is the gate and narrow 13:25 is the way that leads to life, and few there be that find it," 13:29 because you are looking. 13:30 You notice in our theme song it says, "Seek with all our hearts, 13:33 search with all our soul." 13:35 God says, "You will search for me and you will find me," 13:38 Jeremiah 29:13, "when you search for Me with all your heart." 13:41 You've got to want Him. 13:43 You need to seek. 13:45 Jesus said, "Seek and you'll find." 13:46 He's died for everybody, but we need to become aware of our sin 13:51 and then repent of our sins. 13:54 Acts chapter 3, verse 19, "Repent therefore and be 13:57 converted, that your sins might be blotted out." 14:01 Wouldn't it be wonderful if you could start over again and have 14:04 all your sins washed away. 14:06 You can. 14:08 Tell God you're sorry. 14:09 And you said, "Well Pastor Doug, I still am tempted." 14:12 Everybody's tempted. 14:14 Jesus was tempted, but you tell God, "I'm sorry for my sins, 14:16 change my heart," and then you spent your whole life learning 14:19 how to do wrong. 14:21 He teaches you then how to do right. 14:23 It says in Isaiah, "When we learn to do good, you start 14:26 following the Lord and you look at Jesus." 14:27 This is called sanctification. 14:29 And you learn a new way of thinking. 14:31 You read the Bible, you keep your eyes on Christ, you start 14:34 becoming like Him, you change. 14:37 There's a conversion. 14:39 You repent. 14:41 You confess. 14:42 Part of repentance is confessing your sins to God. 14:46 And you might be thinking, "Doesn't God know everything 14:49 Pastor Doug?" 14:50 Well yeah. 14:52 You're not telling Him so you can inform Him. 14:53 First time I read this, I thought, "Okay, Lord, You better 14:56 sit down. 14:57 We have got to talk." 14:59 I mean, He already knows everything, right? 15:03 If you walking out of the auditorium tonight, accidentally 15:06 step on somebody's foot, you're going to say, "I'm 15:09 sorry," right? 15:11 Do they know you stepped on their foot? 15:14 Yeah, but you still say you're sorry. 15:17 That's appropriate. 15:19 Now if you stomp on their foot, and you really hurt them and 15:23 they start to--you say, "I am very sorry," because you really 15:26 hurt them, right? 15:28 If you knock them down by accident, then you help them up 15:30 and you say, "I am so sorry, don't call the lawyer," right? 15:35 So, notice this, the degree of harm dictates the degree of 15:42 apology, all right? 15:45 How much have we hurt God? 15:48 Look at the cross, the sufferings of Christ. 15:51 He took what you deserve. 15:53 So, get on your knees when you're by yourself. 15:56 A lot of preachers, they only give part of the answer. 15:59 They say, "Come forward, say 16:01 this little prayer, you're now saved." 16:02 Now there's a lot of people going to be saved from that 16:04 because that's all they knew and that's all they got, but that's 16:07 not all the Bible teaching. 16:09 The Bible says, "Repent. 16:11 Be sorry for your sins, confess your sins to God." 16:16 He said, "Well I don't remember all my sins, Pastor Doug." 16:18 Nobody does. 16:20 Start with the ten Commandments. 16:23 Have you ever lied? 16:25 You ever steal? 16:27 You ever think in impure thoughts? 16:28 Jesus said, "Sin is not just the action, it's the attitude." 16:32 If a man or woman looks on the opposite sex and lusts in their 16:36 heart, well today you've got to say looks on any sex because 16:39 it's--you're all mixed up. 16:41 But if you look and you lust, you can commit adultery in your 16:46 heart, right? 16:48 Do you know you can murder in your heart? 16:49 Jesus said, "If you're angry with your brother without a 16:51 cause, you're guilty of murder." 16:54 "If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us 16:58 our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness." 17:03 Isn't that good news, friends? 17:05 He wants us to be forgiven. 17:06 He wants us to have peace. 17:07 He wants us in His kingdom with Him. 17:09 Who enters the heart of a born-again Christian and what 17:12 does He do? 17:14 The Bible says John 14:17, "The Spirit," God, the Spirit, "comes 17:19 into your life." 17:20 Something happens. He will activate. 17:22 You're giving Him permission, saying, "Lord, I can't do it 17:24 without You coming into my heart." 17:26 He'll speak to you. He'll guide you. 17:29 Jesus came out of the water at His baptism and the Holy Spirit 17:32 came down. 17:33 You commit your life to the Lord and God will give you His 17:35 Spirit, and He can give you a baptism of the spirit at your 17:38 baptism as well. 17:40 Again, "Both to will and to do," He will help you to do His 17:46 good pleasure. 17:47 We can't live the Christian life without God's help, friends. 17:50 You know that God will never ask you to do something you 17:52 can't do? 17:54 Is that reasonable? 17:56 Anything God asks you to do, as hard as you might think it is, 17:59 He will help you do it. 18:02 There are people who are thinking, "Pastor Doug, I've 18:04 been struggling to quit smoking for years. 18:06 I've been trying to quit drinking and it's not just 18:08 smoking, it's the vaping." 18:10 Drugs. 18:12 Some are addicted to pornography. 18:14 Some are addicted to credit cards and shopping. 18:18 There's all kinds of addictions. 18:19 As a matter of fact, everybody out there, if you don't have 18:21 Jesus, you are a sinaholic. 18:23 The question is, what is your addiction? 18:27 Whatever it is, He can break the chains. 18:30 I've talked to people, they struggled for years with 18:33 drinking and smoking and pornographic addictions and 18:36 shopping addictions and whatever it might be. 18:38 Some are workaholics and He can change you. 18:42 Jesus can--He'll never ask you to do something without giving 18:45 you the power to do it. 18:46 You say, "Oh Lord, I can't cross the ocean. 18:49 I can't swim." 18:51 He'll part the sea. 18:52 He'll give you scuba gear. 18:53 He'll do something, but He will find a way to get you across. 18:57 Anything He asks you, God can move mountains, friends, believe 18:59 it, amen. 19:01 Why did God make such a fantastic sacrifice for you 19:05 and me? 19:06 The Bible tells us in John 3:16, "For God so loved the world that 19:15 He gave His only begotten Son." 19:18 Now it is so hard, friends, for those of you out there that know 19:25 what I'm talking about that I've lost a child. 19:28 We lost a son. 19:31 Doing evangelistic meetings in the Philippines, got a phone 19:34 call that no parent ever wants to get. 19:37 Our tall, handsome, strong, kind son died in a 19:42 construction accident. 19:45 Had to drop what we're doing and go home. 19:48 And you know you cannot describe the pain of when you lose 19:53 a child. 19:54 I don't know why did God wire us to love our children so much. 19:57 It's just something I can't explain. 20:00 But I don't read that verse anymore the same way. 20:06 When I think that God so loved me that He gave His Son, and you 20:09 know, it occurred to me, God loves His son much more than I 20:14 love my son. 20:17 And He must really love you that He would give His Son to 20:23 save you. 20:25 Wouldn't you want to love a God like that? 20:30 The Bible says, what do we do? 20:32 It says, "Believe in the Lord Jesus Christ, and you'll 20:36 be saved." 20:37 Now the word believe doesn't just mean believe that He died 20:40 for your sin because the devil believes that. 20:43 The word believe means be live. 20:46 When Jesus says something, you say, "I be-live in Him. 20:48 I'm going to live what He told me." 20:51 That's what it means. 20:52 It's not just a cheap kind of grace and yeah, I believe it and 20:54 you keep going on your way. 20:55 You don't really believe it if you act like that. 20:57 It means believe what He says and do what He says. 21:01 Follow Him. 21:02 "As many as received Him, to them He gives the right," the 21:05 power, "to become children of God." 21:08 He adopts you into His family and He loves you as a child, and 21:11 He will not forsake you. 21:13 If you make a mistake, He'll pick you back up again. 21:16 Don't get discouraged. 21:18 If you come to Christ, the devil will try to discourage you and 21:20 make you give up. 21:22 Don't give up. 21:23 There are people watching now. 21:25 And you stopped going to church years ago because someone in 21:27 church hurt your feelings. 21:30 Don't do that. 21:31 The devil wants to chase you out of church. 21:32 Even Jesus had a Judas in His church, right? 21:35 So, don't be discouraged. 21:38 The strongest earthly tie is a tie of a parent for a child, and 21:42 that's how much God loves us. 21:43 Number 13, is anyone saved by keeping the law? 21:48 Answer?
