02:56 Well, we're gonna talk about that, but it's connected with 02:58 the subject of his ministry. 03:00 He's called John the what? 03:03 The Baptist. 03:04 Now we're going to go to the man on the street, you'll be 03:07 surprised to see the connection between baptism and these 03:10 prophetic studies, as we continue, but we thought it'd be 03:13 fun to go out and find, well, what do people on the street 03:17 think about the subject of baptism. 03:21 male: What do I think baptism is? 03:23 Well, it's a practice that was started in Christianity terms by 03:27 John the Baptist. 03:28 Jesus was baptized by him. 03:31 We're encouraged to do so by Christ, so if we're devotees of 03:34 Christ, we should probably get baptized. 03:35 It's thought of as a repropriation for sin. 03:39 male: I think, baptism is more like a 03:44 spiritual commitment. 03:46 female: The original word meant "immersion," 03:50 and it's been not Americanized but somehow they changed the 03:54 word they made a word out of it. 03:57 But it originally meant "immersed." 04:00 male: The part of the plan of salvation is that we 04:03 said repent and be baptized and you'll be saved. 04:07 female: I was raised Catholic, so it's like as 04:10 I got older, I was like. 04:12 Well, your baby, like, what did you do to sin? 04:15 Why do you have to get baptized as a baby? 04:16 So like there's been questions and, you know, and then you have 04:19 to find your, you have to find your faith and you have to find 04:21 what works for you. 04:23 male: It's just a religious ceremony. 04:24 female: Coming from a Catholic school teacher, 04:26 I should know this, right? 04:28 No, being brought into our faith. 04:30 female: Being baptized in God's love, really. 04:34 male: It's something that you want to 04:36 become a Christian or something, and then they put water on your 04:41 head or whatever, you know, and then you're a Christian, 04:45 I suppose, yeah. 04:46 male: You know, it's the symbolic mythological 04:50 symbol of, you know, there's the question of the full immersion 04:53 or the drops, but so that's what it is, according to the 05:00 definition, as far as I can tell. 05:02 I don't care about it. 05:04 male: Do I need to believe in Jesus to be saved? 05:06 I got one better for you. 05:08 I got it right here. 05:09 See the app? 05:10 Bible is right there. 05:12 100% to answer your question. 05:13 Yes. 05:14 male: 100,000%. 05:16 And not enough of us do out here right now. 05:19 It's getting crazy. 05:21 It's getting crazy out here, y'all, but that's, yes, 100%. 05:23 I believe in that for sure. 05:25 male: If you're religious. 05:27 male: Well, I hope so. We all have hopes. 05:32 Doug: People are all over the map, trying to figure this out. 05:35 You can tell there's a lot of confusion about something. 05:38 Do you know why? 05:39 I think this is important. 05:41 It is because, as I mentioned, the last prophecy in the Old 05:44 Testament says, "I'm sending you Elijah the prophet." 05:49 Then you turn the page into the New Testament, and it tells 05:53 about this miraculous birth; this old couple has a boy named 05:56 John who is filled with the Spirit from his mother's womb, 06:01 and the angel says he will go forth in the Spirit and the 06:03 power of Elijah, and there's many similars between John the 06:07 Baptist and Elijah. 06:09 They're both bold, they lived holy lives, neither of them 06:13 were married. 06:15 They brought great revival. 06:17 They even dressed the same, even though they're separated by 06:20 about 700 years, says they wore a camel's garment with a 06:24 leather belt. 06:25 They did a lot of work in the wilderness. 06:28 They were very bold in preaching to kings. 06:32 Elijah told Ahab, "I'm telling you to go gather all Israel 06:35 together, and it's your sins that have caused this famine." 06:39 And John the Baptist told Herod, "You should not be marrying your 06:42 brother's wife." 06:45 And he lost his head over that. 06:47 They were fearless, and the Bible says that the work of John 06:51 the Baptist in some ways was greater than any work. 06:56 John the Baptist didn't give a lot of prophecies, but one 06:59 prophecy he gave, he said, "The work I'm doing is not 07:05 so important. 07:06 The one who's coming, I baptize you with water. 07:08 He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and with fire, and I 07:12 am not worthy to bear His sandals. 07:16 He will increase. 07:17 I must decrease." 07:19 That's about the extent of his prophecy. 07:20 The rest of it was teaching about repentance. 07:23 He said, "Repent and be baptized, for the Kingdom of 07:27 Heaven is at hand." 07:29 And the first words that Jesus began to speak, when He started 07:32 preaching was, "Repent and be baptized, for the Kingdom of 07:36 Heaven is at hand." 07:37 The New Testament begins and ends with the subject 07:41 of baptism. 07:43 "Now, Pastor Doug, I came to a prophecy seminar." 07:45 That's right, and this is a prophecy subject. 07:48 And the reason that we inject it where we do is we right now are 07:52 on the threshold of some very heavy subjects. 07:57 And we will be making an appeal tonight to those of you here and 08:00 those of you who are watching that you make a decision to 08:04 commit your life to Jesus, because if you have not 08:08 committed your life to Jesus, if you are not opening your heart 08:10 to His Word, Christ said the words that I speak to you, 08:14 spiritual things are spiritually discerned, and the wise will 08:18 understand and the Holy Spirit will teach you. 08:20 If you're still rebelling in in your heart against God, then 08:24 you're not gonna understand. 08:25 But if you submit to the Lord, these things are gonna unfold to 08:29 you and it's gonna set your life on fire in a good way. 08:33 So let's get into our lesson. 08:35 You'll understand more as we progress with these questions. 08:37 Number one: what New Testament prophet came in the spirit and 08:42 the power of Elijah? 08:44 By the way, the word "Elijah" means "My God is Jehovah." 08:51 "For all of the prophets and the law prophesied until John. 08:56 And if you're willing to receive it--'' this is Jesus speaking, 09:00 "--it is he," he is Elijah "who wants to come." 09:05 And you read in Luke chapter 1 verse 17: "He will go before Him 09:10 in the Spirit--" and the angel is telling Zacharias this, he, 09:13 your son, this miracle baby, "will go before Him in the 09:17 spirit and the power of Elijah to turn the hearts 09:20 of the fathers to the children 09:22 and the disobedient to the wisdom of the just--" 09:26 it's worded a little different than you find in Malachi, 09:30 "To make ready and people prepared for the Lord." 09:33 Now how many here believe the Lord's coming? 09:36 What was the work of Elijah and John the Baptist? 09:39 To make ready a people prepared for the Lord. 09:43 Now, just so you'll understand, when the religious leaders came 09:48 to John and he was baptizing, 09:51 they said, "Are you Elijah?" 09:54 And he said, "No." 09:56 But when they asked Jesus, Jesus said, "Yes, he is in the 10:02 spirit and power of Elijah." 10:03 Why did John say no, John the Baptist said no, 10:06 and Jesus said yes? 10:08 Because they're asking different questions. 10:10 The religious leaders are wondering, "Are you the 10:12 resurrection or reincarnation of Elijah?" 10:16 And he said, "No." 10:17 And Jesus said he is the one who's coming in the spirit. 10:21 Now, who is the first one who came in the spirit and power 10:24 of Elijah? 10:26 See if you know your Bibles. 10:28 Elisha. 10:30 Elisha, the servant of Elijah, follows Elijah across the Jordan 10:36 River, and Elijah says to Elisha, "What can I do for you 10:40 before I am taken away to heaven?" 10:42 He says, "Give me a double portion of your spirit." 10:46 He said, "If you see me when I am going up, it will be so unto 10:50 you, but if not, you will not receive it." 10:52 He said, "Well, I'm going not take my eyes off of you." 10:55 And it says that chariots of fire came down and they scooped 10:59 up Elijah, and he went to heaven in a fiery chariot, and Elisha 11:06 saw it, and the spirit of Elijah came upon Elisha. 11:10 Now Elisha is not a resurrection of Elijah, he's getting the 11:13 spirit of Elijah. 11:16 So John the Baptist was not a resurrection of Elijah. 11:20 He had the same baptism of the spirit, and in the same way that 11:25 Elijah went and he taught all of the sons of the prophets, and 11:29 then he ascends to heaven miraculously and the Holy Spirit 11:32 falls upon Elisha, Jesus after the resurrection, He appears to 11:36 the apostles, He teaches them, He ascends to heaven, He sends 11:39 the Holy Spirit at Pentecost. 11:41 Amen. 11:43 And God is going to do it again because--listen to what Jesus 11:47 said, when they were asking about John the Baptist. 11:50 Jesus said, they're saying, did Elijah come in the spirit 11:53 and power? 11:54 Jesus said, "Elijah will come." 11:58 Now this is after John the Baptist has been beheaded. 12:01 He said, "Elijah will come and Elijah has come." 12:05 So the coming of Elijah before the great and terrible Day of 12:09 the Lord is still future. 12:12 And there is going to be an outpouring of God's Spirit upon 12:15 God's people again before the Second Coming. 12:19 In the same way that John the Baptist 12:21 prepared people for the first coming of Jesus, God is gonna 12:24 fill people with the spirit and power of Elijah to prepare the 12:27 world for the Second Coming of Jesus. 12:30 Can you see why this is a prophecy subject? 12:33 Can you see why we need to be baptized in the Holy Spirit? 12:37 And we need to understand what the work of Elijah is. 12:40 Question number two: 12:42 What unique ministry was John, meaning John 12:46 the Baptist, chosen for? 12:48 What you read in Matthew chapter 3, verse 15 and 6, "In those 12:53 days John the--" say it with me, "--the Baptist, 12:57 came preaching in the wilderness of Judea. 13:00 Then Jerusalem, and all Judea, and all the region 13:03 round about the Jordan went out to him 13:06 and were baptized by him in the Jordan." 13:11 Why the Jordan? 13:12 Jordan is the lowest river in the world. 13:13 It's not the cleanest river. 13:15 Naaman, the Syrian general, he was filled with a leprosy. 13:21 A little Jewish girl who had been captured by the Syrians, 13:26 she heard the story of Elisha. 13:29 She heard how Miriam had been healed of leprosy. 13:32 She said to her mistress, "If my master, the general Naaman, was 13:38 with Elisha the prophet, Elisha could heal him of his leprosy." 13:42 Naaman goes down. 13:44 He's desperate to be healed because leprosy there's no cure. 13:47 It's death sentence. 13:49 He goes down to Israel and eventually he encounters Elisha 13:53 the prophet, and Elisha says, "Go wash in the Jordan River 13:57 seven times, and you will be healed of your leprosy." 14:01 First he's angry, he doesn't want to do it. 14:03 He says that the rivers of Damascus are cleaner than all 14:06 the waters of Israel, which is true. 14:09 But God said, "I want you to go to the Jordan." 14:12 It's the river where Jesus would be baptized. 14:15 It's the river God parted for the children of Israel. 14:18 It's a river that parted for Elijah, it parted again 14:21 for Elisha. 14:22 It's a river of miracles. 14:26 And so Naaman's servants finally say, "Don't be stubborn, master. 14:29 If he had asked you to kill 100 soldiers, you would have 14:32 done it. 14:33 But he says, 'Wash and be clean.'" 14:35 So he takes off his armor, and Naaman the leper, 14:38 he's got his leprosy. 14:39 He goes down in the muddy Jordan. 14:42 He humbles himself. 14:44 Repentance must come before cleansing. 14:48 He humbles himself. 14:49 All the soldiers, they see his leprosy. 14:51 He dips himself one time, two times, and every time he noticed 14:56 nothing's happened, but every time he went down, he was 14:59 humbling himself, lowest river. 15:01 "He who humbles himself will be exalted." 15:05 He went down the seventh time, and something happened. 15:10 All of a sudden his missing fingers and toes and flesh that 15:14 had been destroyed and ravaged by leprosy was restored. 15:18 Not only was it restored, the Bible says his flesh came to him 15:21 again like the flesh of a little child. 15:24 Read about it in the 2 Kings chapter 5. 15:27 He gets baby skin. 15:30 You get born again. 15:32 He came out of the water jumping and screaming and splashing and 15:35 praising God. 15:36 It happened in the Jordan River. 15:38 The Jordan, John the Baptist is sent down to the Jordan 'cause 15:41 it's a symbol of cleansing from the leprosy of sin. 15:46 So he, this prophet, begins his ministry, people humbling 15:51 themselves, repenting to accept Jesus. 15:54 Number four. 15:55 We want to go--according to the Bible, how many different kinds 15:59 of baptism are acceptable? 16:02 The Bible says there is one Lord, one faith, how 16:08 many baptisms? 16:10 One baptism. 16:11 Now there is one truth, there's one truth we're baptized into. 16:15 There's one true Spirit of God. 16:17 God the Father, Son, and Spirit, are one. 16:20 Hear, O Israel, the Lord our God is one. 16:23 God is perfectly united. 16:25 There aren't many different truths. 16:27 By the way, I know there are many different denominations in 16:30 the world today. 16:31 Do you know that's not God's will? 16:33 Jesus said, "All people will know that you are My disciples 16:36 by your love for one another." 16:39 How many groups are there gonna be when Jesus comes back? 16:43 Mark of the beast, seal of God. 16:47 Lost, saved; goats, sheep. 16:53 Narrow road, wide road, with Jesus, against Jesus. 16:59 You know what's gonna happen? 17:01 God's got good people in many churches, do you agree? 17:05 There's gonna be a shaking in the world. 17:07 Great time of trouble. 17:08 People are going to go back to their Bibles. 17:10 They're going to hear messages like this. 17:12 Jesus said, "Many sheep I have that are not of this fold." 17:17 Then also I must call John chapter 10, and there will be 17:21 one fold and one shepherd, and we will base our teachings on 17:27 one Bible and one truth. 17:30 Now there are many divisions right now, and this is not 17:33 God's will. 17:35 The devil comes to divide. 17:36 Jesus wants us to be united, but just not for the sake of unity, 17:39 united on the Word. 17:41 You know how many different things that are called baptism? 17:43 They're not baptism. 17:46 You know, there's some people, they say, well, you can do 17:50 1-800, we'll baptize you over the phone. 17:53 That's called the dry cleaning method. 17:57 And some churches, they sprinkle rose petals and some say, it's 18:00 just a few words that are spoken. 18:02 Some baptized face forward three times, one's for the Father, 18:05 one's for the Son, one's for the Holy Spirit. 18:07 Some people say all that's necessary is baptism of the 18:10 Holy Spirit. 18:12 You don't need water baptism. 18:13 There's all of these different ideas of what baptism is, but 18:17 the Bible says there's what? 18:19 What does it matter if we do things God's way? 18:24 Yes, it does. 18:26 In fact, doing it the wrong way can be sacrilegious. 18:30 I heard about a pastor that he told his church, "Well, baptism 18:33 is a symbol," and it's true: it is a symbol. 18:35 The water in the baptistery, it's H2O. 18:39 And you know, it's a ceremony but it's a very important 18:44 ceremony with meaning, and I heard of a pastor he told his 18:49 congregation, "Well, it's just a symbol so this we're gonna have 18:52 a baptism or you know," he said, "since Communion is just a 18:55 symbol," he said, "this week for Communion instead of having the 18:59 unleavened bread and the unfermented grape trees we're 19:02 gonna have Big Macs and Coke." 19:06 Now how many would agree that there's something really wrong 19:09 with that. 19:11 But you know, there's folks who'll say it doesn't matter as 19:13 long as you're sincere. 19:15 No, it does matter, and how you're baptized matters. 19:19 You wanna follow Jesus's example, amen. 19:22 All right, question number five. 19:24 Jesus is our example. 19:27 How was he baptized? 19:28 A Christian is a follower of Christ. 19:30 What did Jesus do? 19:32 It says, "Jesus came and he was baptized by John in the Jordan." 19:37 For one thing, we noticed he needs a river, so there's a lot 19:39 of water there. 19:41 "And immediately coming up--" what? 19:44 --"From the water." 19:46 In order to come up out of the water you need 19:48 to do for--what first? 19:49 Go down in the water. 19:51 The word "baptism," one of the ladies in the interview got 19:54 that right. 19:55 The word "baptism," baptizo, it's a Greek word, 19:57 it means immerse, submerged, covered, buried. 20:02 It means the old life is washed away every bit of it, you come 20:06 up new. 20:07 You're completely immersed, completely washed, 20:10 completely buried. 20:11 You come up new. 20:13 Jesus did this as an example for you and me. 20:15 Did Jesus get baptized to wash away his sin? 20:18 No, he says, "I'm giving you an example that you should do as I 20:22 have done." 20:24 And he came up from the water. 20:26 John baptized in the Jordan. 20:28 If all he needed was a few drops of water, he could have baptized 20:31 at--with a canteen anywhere. 20:34 Could have baptized, you know, in Jerusalem by a spring, 20:38 but the Bible says that he needed a river. 20:42 Number six: 20:43 How did Philip baptize the treasurer of Ethiopia? 20:48 Some of you remember the story that Philip, one of the 20:50 evangelists, he started out as a deacon, he became an evangelist. 20:54 The Holy Spirit sent him down to the deserts, and there was this 20:58 very powerful successful Ethiopian treasurer for Candace, 21:02 the queen of Ethiopia, but he was a believer in Jehovah. 21:07 He had the Jewish Scriptures. 21:08 He had gone up to the feast to worship God. 21:11 He was coming back from the feast. 21:12 Maybe it was Pentecost. 21:14 He was coming back and he's riding along in his chariot and 21:17 he's reading from the Prophet Isaiah about the Messiah. 21:20 He's actually reading the prophecies about the 21:23 Messiah's suffering. 21:25 And God told Philip, "Go down to the desert." 21:30 He goes down to the desert and this guy's riding by on 21:33 the highway. 21:34 He's reading from the scroll, and Philip said, "Do you know 21:36 what you're reading?" 21:38 And the man said, "It would really help if someone could 21:40 help me understand it." 21:42 He said, "Well, I can, just so happens I know what that 21:46 verse means." 21:48 And he began to talk, and he's the first hitchhiker in 21:50 the Bible. 21:51 He invited him up in the chariot. 21:52 And they rode along together and he began to preach from the Old 21:55 Testament prophecies about Jesus, including the prophecy in 22:00 Isaiah, and the man's heart began to burn within him, and he 22:03 said, "This is the truth. 22:04 Jesus was the Messiah. 22:06 I heard about him. 22:07 This is what--" And he said, "I wanna be baptized." 22:11 They understood the teaching of baptism. 22:13 And they're passing by water; now, they could have meant 22:16 they're passing by--there's a couple of creeks that run down 22:19 into the Mediterranean. 22:20 It could have been they're not far from the ocean. 22:22 Do you know the Bible says you can be baptized in the ocean, 22:25 you can be baptized in a river, you can be baptized in a lake, 22:28 you can be baptized in a baptistry, but you need to 22:30 be immersed. 22:32 And he says, "Here is water. 22:34 What does hinder me?" 22:35 Philip said, "If you believe with all of your heart, 22:39 you may," believe in the Bible. 22:40 And notice what it says here in Acts chapter 8, verse 38 and 39. 22:44 I hope you read the whole thing. 22:45 It's a great story. 22:46 "Both Philip and the eunuch went down into the water, and he 22:51 baptized him. 22:53 Now when they came up out of--" it is pretty clear they're 22:56 being immersed. 22:58 He went down into the water, he came up out of the water. 23:01 "The Spirit of the Lord caught Philip away." 23:05 This is the first biblical example of someone being beamed 23:08 from one location to another. 23:11 Now, think about how important baptism must be that God tells 23:17 Philip to go down to the desert so he could preach to this man 23:20 and baptize him. 23:22 The Gospel of Mark begins with baptism. 23:25 The Gospel of John begins with John the Baptist, baptism. 23:29 The Gospel of Matthew ends with baptism. 23:32 "Go ye therefore, teach all nations, baptizing them." 23:35 If the Gospels begin and end with the subject, then do you 23:38 think it's important? 23:40 God wants us to make a commitment to Him. 23:43 Baptism is as important to a Christian as a wedding is to a 23:47 marriage, and we're gonna bring that out. 23:50 It's the covenant that you make where you find--people say, 23:52 "Yeah, one of these days I think I'd like to be a Christian. 23:54 Yeah, one of these days, yeah, I kind of believe it in my heart." 23:57 "Are you a Christian?" 23:58 "Yeah, maybe." 24:00 People don't know. 24:01 I mean, if people say, "Are you married?" 24:03 "I'm not, I may, could be. I'm getting there." 24:06 No, I mean you've had the ceremony, 24:08 you're married or you're not, right? 24:10 You make the decision. 24:13 And there's certain rights and privileges that come after 24:16 marriage, at least it used to be that way. 24:18 Can you say amen? 24:20 That you don't have before. 24:22 And God is offering certain power. 24:26 Do you know the Bible says, "Repent and be baptized, and you 24:29 shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit--" Acts chapter 2 24:32 "--for the promises unto you and your children and as many as the 24:36 Lord God shall call." 24:38 Jesus came up out of the water, the Holy Spirit came down like 24:40 a dove. 24:42 If you're gonna be able to live the Christian life, get ready 24:44 for the Second Coming, understand the things 24:46 we're teaching, you need the Holy Spirit. 24:49 'Cause spiritual things, Jesus said, are spiritually discerned. 24:52 Christ said, "The words that I speak to you, they are spirit 24:55 and they are life." 24:57 It's not just black ink on white paper, friends, there's a living 25:00 power in God's Word. 25:03 And if you make a commitment, say, "Lord, I wanna follow you," 25:05 He says, "Then you will understand. 25:08 If you're willing." 25:09 Number seven: 25:11 What other truths are conveyed and symbolized by baptism? 25:16 Answer: "Therefore, we are buried with Him--" so it's a 25:21 symbol of death. 25:23 "We're buried with Him through baptism into death, that just as 25:27 Christ was--" what, "--RAISED." 25:30 It represents a resurrection from the dead 25:32 "--by the glory of the Father, 25:34 even so we should walk in a newness of life." 25:37 So when--how many of you have seen a biblical baptism 25:41 by immersion? 25:43 Of course, it is what Baptists practice in many churches, 25:45 practice biblical baptism where the minister, in some cases, the 25:50 elder, will officiate, and they lower the person down briefly. 25:55 They're immersed, they bring them back up. 25:57 It's a symbol of cleansing. 25:59 It's a symbol of new birth. 26:01 Doug: Friends, I hope you've been blessed by today's message. 26:03 But really the reason we do this is so that people might 26:06 know Christ. 26:08 You know, information is not going to save us. 26:10 It's a relationship with Jesus, the one who died on the cross 26:13 for your sins. 26:14 You must personally accept Him, and that's the most important 26:17 thing and why we do these programs. 26:19 If you've not asked Him into your heart before, then I'd 26:22 encourage you to do it right now. 26:24 His arms are open wide. 26:25 Just come to Him as you are and ask Him. 26:29 Doug: Hi friends, I trust you are being blessed by what 26:31 you're watching. 26:32 If you want to be doubly blessed, then you're going to 26:34 want to get the Prophecy Odyssey study guides that go along with 26:37 these presentations. 26:39 There's 15 study guides. 26:40 They're beautifully illustrated, and they will greatly enhance 26:44 your Bible comprehension. 26:45 So if you'd like to get them, simply follow the instructions 26:48 that you see on the screen. 26:49 You will be glad you did. 26:51 ♪♪♪ 26:58 Doug: After our study today, you might have some questions 27:01 about baptism. 27:03 If so, you're going to want a copy of our lesson called, 27:05 "Purity and Power." 27:07 This Amazing Facts study guide answers many important questions 27:12 about the Bible ordinance of baptism that was practiced by 27:15 Jesus Himself. 27:16 To get your free copy, simply follow the instructions 27:20 on the screen, and we'll send it to you. 27:22 ♪♪♪ 27:32 ♪♪♪ 27:35 male announcer: You can become a Bible expert with the Amazing 27:38 Facts' Storacles of Prophecy, Bible-study experience, now 27:41 available in 18 languages. 27:44 These 24 easy-to-read lessons will give you confidence about 27:47 what the Bible really says about last day prophecy, the 27:50 afterlife, and so much more. 27:52 Even better, it's absolutely free at storacles.com. 27:57 Don't miss out. 27:58 Get the answers you need for a happier, 28:00 healthier life today at storacles.com. 28:05 Doug: What you've seen just now is only part one in 28:08 this presentation. 28:09 Make sure and join us for part two in our next broadcast for 28:13 some of the most important points on this topic and to 28:16 complete the corresponding study guides. 28:19 Until then, God bless. 28:23 male announcer: This presentation was brought to you 28:25 by the friends of the Amazing Facts ministry. |
